So wait...they were legit about to go flying seahorse fishing?! AWESOME! That was the coolest level of cool she had experienced all day. That sounded kind of lame, but Ariadne was REALLY excited about seizing and pulling a flying seahorse out of the Great Lake. It was going to be SUPER COOL! She just knew it!

So they weren't able to start right away, but they were going to start soon! First, she had to practice the incantation and wand movement. It looked easy enough, but yeah...one could never tell. Ariadne hadn't exactly gotten everything right the first time since she got here, and the last thing she wanted to do was leave class today without pulling the first flying seahorse out the Great Lake.

"Carpe Retractum!" she said, saying everything in one go. Was that right? Was every syllable there? "Carpe Retractum!" she said again. "KAHR pay ruh-TRACK-tum!" Okay. She was pretty confident with the incantation.

MunchyBubbles 02-21-2016 02:26 AM

Post two, wand motion

Now that Azura was confident with the incantation, she got out her wand and started to make a whip like motion with it.

This wasn't too hard! She thought as she flicked her wrists like she was snapping an invisible whip!

Carpe Retractum. she thought as she whipped her wand back and forth!

Yup! She had it! Could she try now?

The wand movement was going to be a lot easier than saying the spell. He had a much easier time with this. The small boy rubbed his nose before holding up his wand and repeating the motion the others were doing. It was sort of like trying to throw a lasso, but without the spinning motion... he hummed to himself and repeated the motion a few times, snuggling a bit deeper into his coat afterward. This wasn't too difficult.

Well, that was half of it then, she guessed. Incantation down, wand movement to go. So what was the wand movement again? Just a whip? That was it? So all she had to do was remember the incantation, which was fresh on her mind, and then do a nice little whip of the wand, and BAM! Instant flying seahorse!

She suddenly wondered what she would do once the seahorse came flying at her. Just catch it with her hands? Grab a net? Try and run with a bucket and let it drop in like a quaffle? That would be the amusing part. Ariadne fished for her wand, no pun intended, and then whipped it in the same way the professor had.

Or, at least, she thought it was the same movement. She was pretty confident now that she would do this. Just to be sure, though, she whipped her wand a few more times to be on the safe side. Mmkay. FLYING SEAHORSES BEWARE! Here she comes!

Instead of moving straight into practicing the wand movement, Brooklyn decided to take a break. More accurately, she let her blue eyes flicker around, watching the others practice. Of course the Ravenclaws were trying to actually cast the charm. She stayed quiet, though, testing the professor's demeanor. He'd said they shouldn't really cast yet, that they needed to practice first. She wouldn't have minded if they lost some points.

Especially the little one targeting Ilia's hair. That was just rude, although she wouldn't have stayed quiet if it had been her hair. As it was, it wasn't and so she just watched. She watched and she considered. Finally she pulled her wand out and flicked it, like it was a whip. She had a bit of practice with that, sort of. A horse whip, not a real whip, and she hadn't gone riding in years. It still counted as practice.

Colt heard what the Professor said and made his way to practice the spell. So he tried to hear what the spell was but he couldn't. He was kind of distracted by the lake. He was seeing something pop out. Oooohh nooo wayyy it was one of the merepeople. He saw the head pop out and it made eye contact with him. He grinned and it went back under. He stared at it for a few moments and then focused his attention back to the classroom.

He saw him write on the board and thank bloody merlin. He was learning about Carpe Retractum. He knew about that one. Well he heard about it. He practiced saying the spell first, "KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum.....KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum...KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum....KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum...."

Then he pieced it all together, "Carpe Retractum....Carpe Retractum....Carpe Retractum....Carpe Retractum....Carpe Retractum." Now time to practice the wand movement.

Jace nodded once in understanding...and was able to derive a conclusion in the end. “Am I right to assume that the Flying Seahorse Fishing was deemed an inhumane sport because of the unnecessary provocation just to make it fly, and make the fishing activity more challenging?” If true, then...it is rude. Poor fishies.

This one took respect to an ultimately new level. It was a bit strange, however, James liked it. More kids ought to be like this one. "Partially," James nodded. "The inhumanity in the sport mainly derives from the fact that the seahorses were only used to serve the purpose of entertainment, as a game and competition." Did he see the issue with that? They were thrown around just for the fun of it. At least with a potion, they served some good use.

Kitty interrupted to raise her hand and ask a question to the Professor. "What are we going to do to them after we pull them out?"

"Depends on how many are caught," because in all honesty, James doubted they'd catch any more than four total as an entire class. "Some may be relocated to other lakes in the area," he nodded slowly. "And we may also give a few to your Potions Professor." It all just depended, really.

James was too busy addressing some of the questions to notice that some students hadn't followed instructions. Fortunately for them, he had been distracted. Otherwise, it would've been a ban from the activity all together. James didn't mess around. Again he walked towards the center, raising his voice to get everyone's attention. "Alright, now that you've all had some practice with the charm, it's time to get started. After I'm done giving instructions, everyone can go grab one of those large jars off the table." He nodded to where he had been standing before the lesson had officially started.

"You should fill your jar up with water first," they all knew the spell for that one, yes? "And then you can go ahead and find a spot to begin fishing with the seize and pull charm." And no one would fall in on his watch, got it? "This isn't easy, so do not be discouraged if you don't catch any. If you have more luck, stop after you have caught two." They were putting a limit here, got it? "You'll have the rest of class for this."

OOC: Hi! Thanks for sticking with me! Just a few last things before you get started on the activity!

+ This should take 5 labeled posts to complete
+ Make sure to include: Grabbing the jars, filling the jars with water, at least 2 attempts at using the charm, and any outcomes of it's use.
+ Be creative! Your charrie doesn't have to be entirely successful! They might find things like a string of seaweed or a lone sock
+ You will have until Tuesday at 1pm EST to complete this task! I may extend the time if it's needed.

+ IMPORTANT: I won't be around as much tomorrow, so if we could keep from having any students drowning in the lake that would be incredible. James would be making sure that no one stands too close to the edge.
+ If you have any questions or need me to clarify please shoot me a VM or a PM and I'll be glad to help!

Additionally: It's not too late to finish the mini-activity, you still have the opportunity to catch up with it until I bring the main-activity to an end!

And it was Activity Time!!!

Quickly taking down the last bit of notes from the board Hady gathered up her things and put them back into her bag neatly. She wouldn't be needing them anymore as of right now.

Listening silently to Professor Draper it was clear what needed to be done and it didn't seem all that difficult. Collect two flying sea horses in a jar filled with water using the seize and pull charm. It sounded like an easy task to her. And she already knew how to cast the charm needed but something in the back of her mind was telling her that this wasn't going to be as easy as it sounded.

Pushing the thought aside the fifth year rose to her feet and made her way to the table that was a little ways to the side and collected herself a jar for the task and checked it over. Not cracks or chips meant it was in good condition. Taking her wand from it's holster she aimed it inside the jar and cast a quiet, "Aquamenti." When it was full about three thirds of the way with water Hady cancelled the charm and turned her attention to the lake before her.

Rachel watched Haddie as she actually tried out the spell. "I don't think that's what Professor Draper had in mi-.'' She stopped abruptly, impressed with her best friend's work. "Wow. Excellently done, Haddie. Some more practice and you'll be perfect!'' Rachel was smiling but then it faltered somewhat as Haddie took aim at Ilia. "Haddie!'' She grabbed the other girl's wrist. But it was too late. Despite herself, she couldn't help but giggle. "I reason this is revenge for the dueling club meeting.'' She knew Haddie wouldn't go to the extreme to 'accidentally' hurt Ilia, however.

The Eagle turned her head back in Draper's direction. She was happy that he hadn't caught on to what Haddie had been doing. Oh! They were about to get started. Lovely! "Let's go get started, Haddie,'' she said after the instructions had been given. She collected a jar from the front. "Aguamenti,'' she said confidently. Just a teeny trickle of water leaked into her jar. "Aguamenti.'' Nothing happened this time. "Aguamenti.'' Hello, water! "Finite.'' She was ready to begin fishing now.

Its not like the wand can speak back... Or can it? Tenacius was looking suspiciously at the wand in his hand and the wand.... just stayed silent. No spark, no nothing. Maybe it was just coincidence with that twig eh?

Then again Adler wands are known for some things...

But the Professor has moved on with the next activity. Now its time for fishing! Or flying seahorse catching... thing.

He swipes a jar off the table then turns for the lake. Now what was it that the fishermen from back home always said? Location location location....

With her jar almost filled with water, Rachel went off to find the ideal Flying Seahorse fishing spot, her left arm linked through Haddie's right one. She didn't have to go far to look, of course. She simply chose one a little distance away from the spot where the class had been held. She thought that if she were around where less students were, she would have a good chance of catching at least one seahorse because less students meant less noise to scare the seahorses away. "Is this spot okay? We can always move if you want to.''

She was still worried about if the Seize and pull charm would hurt the little creatures but Professor Draper wouldn't have let them do this activity if they would be harmed... would he?

Mulling over Draper and his constant grumpiness, Rachel scanned the Black Lake. She just needed to wait now for the flying seahorses. "Do we just wait for them to fly out of the water?" she asked Haddie uncertainly. It seemed the logical thing to do so for now, she was waiting, her eyes focused on the water.

Oh no, OH NO. It was time they got near the lake. Matt was NOT looking forward to that time and he wanted to skip that bit altogether. Only he didn't. That kind of sounded cool, fishing for Flying Seahorses.

He would give it a TRY. Yas.

Breeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeathe.

No need to rush. So. First things first, which waaaas... getting a jar.

Easy enough! Matt could do that in a heartbeat. BUT he wouldn't. He took his time. He toooooook. His tiiiiimmeeeee.

The jars were all exactly the same, but Matt wanted to CHOOSE one that he'd claim to be different. It WAS going to be different in his eyes, OKAY? Okay.

Chill. Nice and relaxed, Matt was FINE. Look at him choosing a jar.

Chooooosiiiing... a jaaaaaaaaaaaar... taking his time.

Hi, jar! No, not this one... This one-! Nope. Nope. Nope. Not that one either.

Oh, okay, so they were just relocating the seahorses to another part of the lake. So they weren't just fishing them for the thrill of it; that was good. Well the part about possibly seeing if their Potions Master wanted them; Tia just tuned that part out. She didn't want to think about seahorses in her potions.

Would these jars be big enough? She guessed so, because the Professor wouldn't have told them they weren't. She didn't even know how big Flying Seahorses were; were they the size of a hippogriff or a goldfish? Or somewhere in between?

Just in case though, the seventh year not wanting to suffocate her precious seahorse and in case she caught more than one, Tia cast a quick non-verbal, "Engorgio" on her jar, effectively enlarging it so it was about four and a half feet tall and two and half feet wide. That should be good enough. She hoped the Professor wouldn't complain about her taking up too much space with the jar, but really, she just was thinking about the humanity of the seahorse.

Now time to fill the jar up with water; except would the seahorse be able to thrive on the water that came from her wand? That wasn't lake water, like what the creature was used to . . .

Right, Matt was getting bored of choosing a jar now, so he finally picked one. A random one, actually, since they were all the same.

RIGHT², water. He could do THAT, especially without getting close to the lake. He was glad they didn't have to use water FROM the lake. That would've been... not very fun. He'd still do it, though. He admited it would've been interesting. But NOPE, normal Aduamenti water it was.

"Aguamenti." Matt said as he pointed his wand to the opening of the jar and caaaaarefullyyyyyy filled it with water. He actually managed to control the quantity and the strength of the water coming out of his wand, which was a first. WOO, he was becoming a pro at this magic business. School COULD be useful, he had to admit.

Wait...

So they weren't going to give all the seahorses they caught over to Professor Newton? They could also be relocated?

Esme felt a weight lifted off of her shoulders. For a few minutes she had believed she would have to fight Professor Draper on the matter. And all for 'population control'. This... this was MUCH better. Of course there was still the problem of using a seize and pull charm on innocent creatures that didn't harm anyone and spent their lives minding their own business and not interfering with humans. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if she tried the spell out and didn't actually CATCH anything. Would she lose points for that? Honestly she didn't really give a toss either way...

Grabbing a jar, Esme used Aguamenti to fill the container with what she deemed to be a good amount of water for the seahorses. Hopefully they wouldn't mind that she hadn't used lake water but the idea had left her head the moment that she considered just how COLD it would be given the fact that it was currently late January. At least this was something?

Mini-activity catch-up / sort of / mini post 1?

Catching seahorses was a NECESSARY EVIL for potions?! Ugh! How unfair! David was torn between wanting to be the best at everything ever and wanting to protect creatures because he absolutely loved studying them!

But what the teacher said, goes, and he knew better than to mess with Draper. For now. So the obedient second-year cleared his throat and his mind, and worked to practice the spell. WITHOUT a wand. He'd learned his lesson here.

"Carrrr-pay-re-tract-um," David pronounced nicely and smoothly and steadily. Now, with more emphasis: "Kahr-pay, re-track-tum!" Once more, without the wand, then, putting it all together: "Carpe Retractum!" Yes, very good. He nodded to himself because it all sounded right, and double-checked his notes before attempting the wand movement.

Ilia was minding her own business, sitting by Henric and 'practicing' her separate words and wandwork. As she was minding her business though, someone else was not clearly. She felt her long blonde hair , tightly coiled into a bun, get tugged. Not just a gentle nudge, not some kid behind her trying to play with her hair no. It yanked, hard enough to mess up her bun and she let out a yelp.

Holding the back of her head and wincing she looked back at a couple of misbehaving eaglets. Her eyes narrowed on the pair and glared. Baby bird was holding Chirp Twerp's wrist. The little brat was probably miffed over the duel, but she needed to get over it. You don't take it out an opponent later for no reason. She was not even the person who knocked her off of the platform, she just silenced her. She'd remember it brat, her glare said as much to the child. "I believe that the professor said to practice the words and motions separately for a reason. Mind where you aim your wand and what you peep, Chirp." That would be your only warning kid.

Focusing back on the matter at hand, she rose from her seat and brushed her hand against Henric. Walking up to the desk, she grabbed a jar and walked into the grass. Now she could fix her hair....loosing her golden mane from the remaining bonds, she preened and smoothed it before just braiding it this time. There, that would do for now, back to this jar business.

Post 1 - Mini Activity!

OOOOH so they were doing stuff with flying seahorses?! This lesson was a lot more interesting than Scarlett had initially thought it would be. Smiling and anxiously taking notes on everything as class progressed, it was finally time to do some hands on stuff - and they were going to learn Carpe Retractum! She didn't know why, but she thought this spell was SUPER cool and was very excited to learn it.

As everyone around her hurried through the activity, she took her time. First, the incantation. She cleared her throat and repeated the spell a few times..."Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum....Carpe Retractum..." she said over and over again. Kind of hard to mess this one up...or so she hoped...

catch-up post 2! from the mini-activity

Hoping that Draper wasn't watching him too closely, Davie decided to try the spell with his wand this time. He got it out and cleared his throat, visualizing the words, "CARPE RETRACTUM!" coursing through his mind as though the words were on one of those moving Muggle sidewalks the Muggles sometimes had at aeropuertos.

He swished and flicked his wand, as though it were a crackling whip, and enunciated the phrase: "Carpe Retractum!" A beam of gold-orange light came off his wand, nice and beautiful and warm-looking. Hurrah hurrah! He loved it.

He didn't love that he was going to have to use this spell to catch lil flying seahorses, but he decided to try it again. "Carpe Retractum!" ZAP! Another beam of light. Well this was positively brilliant; could they use this spell on people, he wondered? Where was his BFF? Or his other BFF, Blaise? They could try the spell on each other to see if it actually hurt the seahorses...

Azura slowly moved off the bench and walked towards the lake's edge carefully.. She made sure that she was as far away from Jace as she could manage. He didn't need to see her. Not after everything.. So she quietly moved to the table, grabbed a jar and quickly moved over to the lake edge, where she was a bit farther out than most of the kids..

All right, she had got her jar, now what?

Oh right! Water!

"Aquamenti!" She called out and pointed her wand down at the jar..

Nothing.

And once again her wand knew that she wasn't feeling it.. Because she knew the spell and she had done it several times.. and now.

"Aquamenti! She said with a sigh..

Drat..

Now that he had the spell down, Davie quietly moved up to where Draper had the jars, grabbed one without the professor's noticing, and then hurried down to the edge of the lake. Why couldn't they fill the jars up with lake water? Wouldn't that water be better for the flying seahorses? Because it would be what they were used to? He thought about raising his hand to point this out to the professor, but decided not to, because he was already running a bit behind his classmates.

Once he had his jar, Davie calmly pointed his wand inside and cast, "Aguamenti." This was one of his favorite and easiest spells, after all.

He glanced over at a girl beside him who reminded him of himself. Same robes and all. "I had troubles like that once," he told her helpfully, almost cheerfully. "Do you need a hand?" Davie already had his jar three-fourths full, because obviously he was leaving 1/4 empty for the displacement the seahorses would cause.

Azura sighed softly, her magic wasn't having it today because she felt totally out of it.. C'monnn.. It's a simple spell. Being rejected wasn't THAT big of a deal right?

She was pulled from her thoughts as she heard a male voice and she turned her head to see a boy next to her.. Wait.. was that.. Davie? The boy who Rachel liked? Her purple eyes went slightly wide, before slowly nodding at him.

"I do need a hand actually, my magic isn't feeling it today." She said with a soft sigh. "Thank you, I'm Azura by the way." She said with a warm smile over at him.

"Azura," Davie repeated just as warmly, so that he would remember it, "it's nice to officially meet you. I'm Davie Truebridge." He'd seen her around, of course. Around THOSE GIRLS, you know. But it was nice to have an official introduction, as long as he didn't get too embarrassed talking to a GIRL.

Now, time to explain Aguamenti. "So this spell is quite simple, as long as you can visualize what you want to achieve. Think of watery things, like waterfalls and water faucets and bathtubs and rubber ducks." LOOK AT THAT, he was starting to understand Muggle lingo! "It might help you to clear your mind if you look at the lake a bit, so that all the water gets into your mind, not literally of course, but visually, before you try the spell again. To shut off the spell, you just imagine turning your wand off, as though you're turning off a tap!"

Quite easy, quite quite. Davie glanced out at the lake as though modeling the spell, and then glanced back at Azura to see if she was ready to try it or not.

.......

The jar was filled, so that meant Matt was officially ready to fish Flying Seahorses. Okay, he could do it. He could do it, yes. He could. Right? Right?

Right, from just over.......... here. He had taken a few steps closer to the lake, but he was most definitely NOT that near it. His spell work should be powerful then, he supposed. "Carpe Retractum." He said as he did the super cool wand movement.

...Did it even reach the water? Matt blinked as nothing happened. Shrug.

Janelle finished the last of her notes. With her spell practice completed, she listened to the instructions for the main activity. They were going to be fishing for Flying Seahorses. Then Janelle wondered for a moment. Fishing implied catching something in the water, but these creatures could fly as well. Were they supposed to "fish" them out of the water, the air or both?

While she pondered that question, Janelle went up and got one of the big jars. Returning to her seat, she took out her wand and pointed it toward the mouth of the jar. "Aguamenti", Janelle said. Water poured from the tip of her wand into her jar. She waited patiently, until the jar was nearly full before ending the spell. Picking her jar up, Janelle went in search of a good spot for fishing.
