Ilia listened to all of the other students and just sort of watched them from her spot next to Henric.........by the mid point of each lesson she always found a few that she questioned the mental acuity and/or sanity of. So they were actually going to catch the poor little things? She frowned a little bit at the thought of it, she didn't condone harming other things. Her goal was to become a healer for creatures after all, not to harm them in any way. While she thought of the potential consequences and her own beliefs, she obeyed 'practice' for a spell which she already knew. Oh sweet Circe, what to do......"Carpe Retractum" she said aimlessly and then made the mouth motions as she thought. At least she was by Henric right now....

Given she had guessed on that last answer of hers it had been correct therefore Hady put on a small grin. The mornings lesson wasn't all to difficult of one but wanting to keep her grades as they had been she pulled out a sheet of clean parchment and a book to lean on as she neatly took down all the notes that had been listed on the board. Whether she knew the information or not didn't matter anymore, what mattered was being prepared for everything and anything.

So the Seize and Pull Charm was the days charm to learn. Simple enough really since it had been learn a term or two ago, possibly longer for her since she had a habit of teaching herself charms before hand. Either way though she would practice just as instructed.

"KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum," Hadleigh recited slowly and clearly before repeating it again a couple more times. "Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum." Not much more to it then that really.

Rachel thought she understood what was meant by the balance of the Lake needing to be in check. She wanted nothing to go wrong with the Lake and in turn the creatures living there. However, it was time for her to start practicing. She decided to start off with the incantation to the Charm.

''KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum. KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum. Carpe Retractum. Carpe Retractum.'' That wasn't such a bad or tongue- twister like incantation for which she was grateful. "Have you gotten used to the incantation, Haddie?'' Rachel asked. She was more than willing to help her friend if needed.

Having the incantation long down packed it was safe to say that Hady could move on to practicing the wand movement. Not that she needed to but she would anyhow. It was always best to be safe then sorry especially when in a class with younger years all around her. The less accidents the better.

The movement was a simple 'whip like' motion. Removing her wand from it's holster on her wrist she wrapped her fingers around the smooth wood before practicing.

Whip...whip...whip.. Once and then twice she gave it a good try. See nothing to it when you already knew what you were doing. Confident that she need not do this anymore she simply sat there on the bench waiting for the next part of the lesson.

Rachel repeated the incantation a few more times for good measure. She was particularly determined to do the best that she possibly could as the spell was a tad advanced for her. She then retrieved her wand after she was satisfied with the incantation practice.

She did the movement exactly as she had seem Professor Draper do. One whip like movement. Two whip like movements. Three whip like movements. Four whip like movements. Rachel thought she had practiced both aspects well. To actually cast the spell was an entirely different story but she was somewhat positive.

Janelle was busy taking notes on everything important that her classmates and Professor Draper said. And that was a lot of information. When the professor announced that they were moving on, she was immediately at attention. So they would be working with the Seize and Pull charm. That wouldn't be too bad, at least Janelle hoped that it wouldn't.

Copying down the notes from the board, Janelle felt that she was ready to practice. As always, the first order of business was the incantation. She was pretty consistent in her approach to practicing spells. It had seemed to work well for her so far. "Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum", she repeated slowly. It was important to get the feel of the words in on her tongue, as she enunciated each syllable. Once Janelle felt comfortable, she said the incantation at a more normal speed. "Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum." Now it was time to practice the wand movement.

"Carpe Retractum." He repeated once more, getting the hang of it. When he thought that he could move on to practicing the wand movement, he finally took out his hand from his pocket, along with his wand. Whip-like. He had never used a whip before and he never wanted to.

Holding his wand, Carl whipped the air like a cowboy. No ... he was too stiff. He did the movement one more time, bending his wrist this time. This was better! He practiced some more, whipping in different directions, but careful to not actually poke anybody with his wand.

Now came the fun part. Janelle got to channel her inner lion tamer for this one. She had seen old movies with lion tamers in a muggle circus. Did they even have those anymore? That probably wasn't a good reference, considering she was in a Care of Creatures class. Anyway, Janelle had her visual.

Holding her wand carefully she made the required motion, pretending that she was cracking a long whip. Again and again, she practiced the movement. Janelle tried not to get too flourishy with the movements. She wanted to do the proper amount of "whipping" so that the spell would work. But she didn't want to overdo it. After repeating the movement a few more times, she felt ready to put the two parts of the spell together. All she needed was for the professor to give the word.

Tia had been doodling hearts taking notes in her notebook the whole time even though she'd been quiet through the general knowledge questions and answers part of the lesson. It wasn't that she didn't understand what was being talked about or have any thoughts on what creatures needed to thrive in the water, but just that she was giving others a chance to answer.

Oh finally they were getting to the activity part; thankfully didn't involve them going into the freezing lake yet. They were just practicing the seize and pull charm; one that she was already vaguely familiar with but for the sake of it, she would still practice it. Non-verbally. Since she was confident already with her ability to complete it verbally.

"Kahr-pay ruh-track-tum" she said aloud twice, just to get the pronunciation right in her head. And then without words, she silently thought about the incantation; kahr-pay ruh-track-tum

The Professor looked like he hasn’t heard of seahorse nuggets before, and Tenacius only thought that was a great thing, because new food is always a great thing innit? Yes Top Ten Aces Rules to Live By.

But yeah its Magic time and first comes the spell. Carpe Retractum. Tenacius mouthed the words a few times to get his lips used to forming the words. Then a quiet murmur "Karpee Reetrakthem... Kar... Karpay Reetrukthem..." hmm still don’t sound right."KAR-pay Ree.. KAR-pay Ruh...TRACK.. Them." it sounds so odd. Why cant any of these be in English?

But when in doubt, write it down. And that’s what the curly top did. He took out a parchment and wrote the spell several times, each time saying it slowly and with the correct emphasis.

Finally he's used to it, at least for now "KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum" Yeah doesn’t sound that odd anymore as the words bounce around his head "Carpe Retractum."

Tucking away his wand back in his chest holster, wit difficulty by the way, since he was wearing layers, Jace got his parchment again, reviewed the spell...what it does, its wand movement, and finally the right pronunciation of the Latin words. “KHAR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum...KHAR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum...” It was a mouthful for the half Japanese, but thank Merlin he knows how to speak English. He wasn’t a total dunce when it comes to the language.

“Carpe...Retractum,” Jace closed his eyes and repeated the spell inside his head, “Carpe Retractum...Carpe Retractum...Carpe Retractum.” He knew it to be an advanced spell since, in a way, it is a form of conjuration. He simply must have his intent whole...and his wand movement and incantation flawless. He shouldn’t be worried about coordination now, right?

He got this.

The wand movement was simple enough to get the hang of; just a whip-like movement. Except that Tia didn't want to do the non-verbal incantation in conjunction with the wand movement yet, because she might accidentally pull something or someone towards her. And well, that could be bad. Though she supposed she could practice it on her notebook; though she was sure that on a living thing it might be more difficult to achieve success.

Nonetheless, she decided she would do just that.

Carpe Retractum, the Head Girl incanted in her head, as she flicked her wand in the appropriate fashion at her notebook. Nothing. Focus, focus. Carpe Retractum she incanted again.

And like magic, like her notebook was on an invisible fishing line, it flung towards her when she gave her wand a tug, like her wand was a fishing pole. She reeled in her notebook. Perfect. She did wonder what they would do with the seahorses when they caught them; was that even humane to fish them?

Alright, now that he's used to the words flowing out of his lips, it was time for some action! Which is what he always likes.

So the curly top grabbed his Alder wood out of its holster and started practicing the wand movement. Whip like yeah? Whip whip whip... Whip yo' wand back and forth back and forth back and forth...

Easy peasy. It was like fishing with a muggle fishing rod. Just lift the stick, flick it back a bit and--

-- SUDDENLY some random twig flew towards him, drop rolling and stopping by his feet.

:whaa:

What?? How?!? He wasn’t even talking! Well the words were echoing in his head because he didn’t want to forget what he just practiced but but....

... And then he looks weirdly at the Alder wood in his hand. "Was that you wand?" Because you're scaring him.

"KHAR-Peh rEE-TRACK-tum...KHAR-peh reh-TRACK-tum...” Kitty practiced reciting the spell out loud, keeping her wand in her robes so that she didn't accidentally pull anything out. "Carpe Retractum. Carpe Retractum. Carpe Rectractum."

Kitty interrupted to raise her hand and ask a question to the Professor. "What are we going to do to them after we pull them out?"

Practing things that she already knew was terribly dull, but she knew that first years and such needed to learn it. Oh well, she started doing the motions as she stayed sitting next to Henric. And then another student raised a question that she had been wondering herself. Yes.....what were they going to do with them?

...He HAD to be joking.

Was Professor Draper suggesting that they go fishing for poor defenseless creatures in order to harvest them for potions ingredients?

Yeeeeeeah, Esme didn't want to be a part of it. Quite frankly she didn't even want to be a part of Potions either if it required her to obtain creatures so that they could be added to a cauldron. What happened to plucking hairs from them? Or waiting until they died of natural causes? She didn't care that their numbers were 'out of control'. What did it matter when they lived in the lake and kept themselves to themselves?

Under her breath she began to utter the incantation. Why pass up on an opportunity to learn a new spell when it could prove to be incredibly useful for other things.

"Carpe Retractum... Carpe Retractum... Carpe Retractum..."

The spell was easy enough. Like Carpe Diem, just swapping the Di out for Retract. So Carpe Retractem. Easy-peasy. Haddie nodded to Rachel. "Yep. Carpe Retractem. See?" She aimed the wand at a leaf. "Carpe Retractem!" The leaf fluttered a little, but that was probably more to do with the the light breeze and not her spell casting.

"Maybe I got the hand movements wrong..." Because, nope, she'd said the words right. Definitely said them right. Haddie practiced the wand movements a few times and then tried again. "Carpe Retractem!" This time the leaf was tugged forcefully in her direction. "See?" Haddie smirked, proudly.

As Esme practiced the incantation a little plan formed in her mind.

She could gather some seahorses, but she wasn't going to hand them over to Professor Newton. Nope. Instead she was going to keep them in a tank and make a little home for them in her dorm. Just as long as she made sure to give them all the food that they needed they should be safe. The only question in her mind was how to capture them without causing great distress. Jace had brought a good point with his question but really she couldn't see any other way to go about the process. Maybe she could stand in the lake and try to scoop them up in a jar?

In the meantime she would finish practicing the spell. With her wand she began making whip like motions. Whip. Whip. Whip. This was actually quite easy. If only all spells were as simple.

Austin, who had finished most of his tea, was finally feeling better about class. Nothing like a good cup of raspberry tea to wake you up in the morning. He even got up and found a spot around the other students who were practicing. Most of them were practicing on leaves, hoping to get them to move. Did they know they weren't supposed to be doing the words and movement together? Well if they didn't, they'd soon find out.

"Kahr-pay re-track-tum." He began sounding out the words. "Kahr-pay re-track-tum. Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum." He went on mumbling to himself for a few minutes, getting the flow of the spell. The teen did not want to be the only fifth year who couldn't do the spell.

Haddie glanced around at everyone else practicing the spell and her eyes fell on Ilia. Or rather, more specifically, the back of Ilia's head, since the Snake was in front of them. She gave Rachel a sly little grin, and then her face fell serious again.

Haddie turned slightly, so she was facing the back of the Snake's head, and decided she could use a bit more practice. "Carpe Retractem. Carpe Retractem. Carpe Retractem." See, just lil' ol' her, practicing this lil' ol' spell, while she happened to be, without meaning to, facing the back of Ilia's head. Haddie continued to practice the pronunciation, like everyone else was.

After a little bit Haddie switched to practicing the hand movement. Like a whip. Back and forth. Yanking the target. Yanking it hard. Yanking it like it was tethered to an invisible cord. Back and forth. Like a whip. All the while Haddie discretely focused on Ilia's hair. Her accidental target. She imagined Ilia's hair tethered to her wand. Back and forth in whip-like fashion. And now together, by total accident of course. Haddie wrenched her wand back like it was a whip. "Carpe Retractem!" Oops.

...Was this professor a broken record? He had already SAID that it was a matter of opinion and Matt had already disagreed on that. Why was he repeating himself? He knew that wouldn't change Matt's mind, didn't he? "I disagree." Just in case the professor still had any doubts.

Evil. ALL EVIL. All of them.

Anyway, activity time. Matt listened to see if they would have to go into the lake or some awful thing like that, but nope, apparently not. At least for now. GOOD. And getting the seahorses out of the water sounded safe enough, since they didn't have to go in and once the creatures were out... no matter how evil they were, they would be weak and wouldn't be able to do anything to them, right??

Not that he expected SEAHORSES to do anything to him, but STILL.

OOOHHH, Matt liked that wand movement. It kind of reminded him of Indiana Jones and that film was COOL. The Gryffindor got his wand and got ready to PRACTISE. Whip-like movement.

The seahorses really could breathe out of the water?! Jaemin stared at the professor, blinking owlishly at him in surprise. He knew they were magical creatures, but... still! Did that mean that they had more lungs than regular creatures? How did it work? Did their gills switch or something?! The response seemed to bring some of the life and energy back into the small sniffly boy. He had about six million questions and he was pretty sure this class would only be long enough to get answers for maybe four million of them. He needed to know.

Yes. Needed.

However, it seemed they were moving from the special features now, and on to the main event. Which involved learning new magic, so listening to professor was extra important. He still had some issues with making the words for the spells sound right when he was learning them. He listened closely to how the professor pronounced the incantation, mouthing it to himself silently until the man told them to practice it themselves.

"Caaaaaaaaaar. Paaaaaaaaay. Ruuuuuuuuh. Traaaaaaaaaack. Tuuuuuuum." On his first pass, the small boy deliberately over-emphasized the syllables, figuring out how to work his mouth around them. It wasn't hard, but sometimes things didn't come out just right, and spells relied heavily on that, right? He repeated it again. "Car pay. Ruh Track Tem."

The end sounded a bit off. He frowned and repeated it a few more times, putting all his emphasis on the end syllable until it sounded right; he made a note of the pronunciation next to the spell in his notebook, so he would remember it later.

"Carpe... Retractum. Carpe Retractum." that sounded like the way the professor had said it, yes. Good.

Since that wasn't a hard wand movement, Matt didn't have to practise it that much. But it was FUN! So he did. Several times and for quite a long time.

He SHOULD practise the incantation as well, he suppooooosed. Eh, boring. But he should, then fiinnneeeeee, he would. Looking at the board, the boy read the words out loud. "Carpe Retractum."

There. Easy peasy. Perfect. No need to pratise that any more.

BACK TO THE WHIP-LIKE MOVEMENT!!

Now that she had mastered the pronunciation (probably0 the next step was waving the wand in the correct way. Kitty practiced by slashing her arm back and forth. The physical effort was a good exercise for the arm and made her feel less cold.

Ohh Goody!! They were going to learn a new spell! Azura was always happy about that and she was excited that she had gotten another answer right! She wasn\'t fully sure about what they were going to do to the Seahorses, but.. teachers knew best right?

She had to assume they did. So she was going to follow his instructions!

Now to try out the spell. "Carpe Retractum." She said out loud as she rolled the incantation around on her tongue.. "KAHR pay ruh-TRACK-tum!" That wasn\'t so hard at all!

"Carpe Retractum!" She sound louder and a bit more confident like! Confidence was key in spells really. She had learned that from Austin! She couldn\'t wait to try the actual spell out! But she of course would wait!
