Post 6 Ilia was going to make one last effort at this spell. She just wanted to seem like she was working hard at it and she didn't mind stirring up some seaweed. "Carpe Retractum" She made the whip motion into the patch of seaweed close by and a chunk of it came flying out onto the bank. Whoops.....she hadn't meant to do that. Really she just thought she could plop it back down in the water, but she'd pulled a bit hard. Looking at it before chucking the mass of plant back she saw something yellowish in it. Odd, this seaweed didn't tend to get that color. A naturally curious person, she leaned over it to inspect it a bit more closely. Oh no! There was a seahorse in it!!! Swiftly, she pulled the little creature out of the mass of weeds only....shouldn't it have jumped away from her? ................ In that horrible moment, she realized that it was not only, not trying to escape.....but it wasn't moving...at all. Gently, she set the little creature down. Maybe....it was just stunned? No.....the tears were already forming in her eyes as she started trying to cast a healing spell upon it. It wouldn't help and part of her knew it, but she tried anyways. It had no wounds upon it, but it wasn't moving and she tried again...sobbing a little as she cast the spell. "H-henric." She was trying not to let anyone see the tears that had started falling from her blue eyes but, they were happening. |
Post 5, main activity (and exeunt Brooklyn ;)) Thankfully, there hadn’t been any other distractions. Brooklyn would have ignored them if she could, but that was unnecessary when shortly after she’d cast the charm, something small had flown toward her. Even before she’d seen what it was, she’d leaned down to pick up her jar and managed to get it inside. Even then, she didn’t look in the jar, instead stowing her wand and moving away from the lake. She wasn’t about to deal with an angry lake creature if she’d accidentally taken their child. Honestly, she didn’t know if the lake creatures really bothered to worry about things like that. It was a question she didn’t really think was important to find out. However, as she had reached the bench where her bag was waiting, she glanced into the jar. Swimming around inside, or floating, or whatever, was what looked unmistakably like a seahorse. A slightly strange looking seahorse, but she imagined that was due to the magical qualities. She took a pen out of her bag and labeled her jar with her name and other pertinent information, before she left it over by the slowly growing collection of the other students’ jars. She only gave Professor Draper a sympathetic look before she gathered her things and headed off away from the lake. She wasn’t planning on staying any longer than she had to. Instead, she’d take the free time to go for a walk or something. |
Post 6 SPOILER!!: Oscar the grouchy, RachiePie & SnakeyPoo "Yep," Haddie pulled out a piece of parchment and a quill and stepped forward to use the table to write on. She wasn't thrilled about being that much closer to Drapes, but in a few seconds she'll be out of the class, so it was worth it. "Just need to atta THUNK! A smelly old boot landed at the end of the table. Haddie scrunched up her nose and fought back the urge to gag. The thing stunk! Horribly. But she was done. She quickly fastened her tag to her jar and set it on the table. "Good luck with that, Professor." She gestured to the boot, gagging and rushed after Rachel. Haddie almost felt bad for Ilia. Almost. But if the girl couldn't figure out it wasn't smart to lob smell boots in the direction of the professor, a very, very disgruntled professor at that, well, it was her own fault what happened to her. She didn't wait around to see the fallout though. It was cold and stenchy. That was plenty reason for her to get back in the castle as quickly as possible. |
Post 4 - ;__; SPOILER!!: llia T_T Henric hummed a tune in his head as he continued 'catching' those little creatures but really...he was just playing with his casting line above the water surface all this while and watching the water ripples it caused. He was bored. And yes, this was one of the reasons why he rarely went out fishing with his dad. He hadn't got any patience or time for it. llia on the other hand, had caught seaweed again! It was hard not to laugh at her cute little antics but it was too funny, okay! "What is it this time? Seaweed again ,llia?"he chuckled. It took him a little while to realise when llia suddenly fell oddly silent. "What is it?" he asked once more, but he heard only silent soft sobs. Alarmed, Henric hurriedly got up and crouched beside her. Concerned, he put a hand on her shoulder. "llia, what's wrong?" He glanced down to where she was staring at. Oh no...poor little seahorse.... "It's alright, llia...don't cry.."he immediately consoled her. Henric reached in his pockets to pull out his handkerchief and gently wrapped the little guy in a small bundle. His heart felt heavy all of a sudden. |
Post 7 >.> Quote:
She began to whisper something over it in old Scandinavian as Henric consoled her. She gave an emotional burial of sorts to any creature that ended its life journey, even insects (except acromantulas....). Henric had seen her do so before but it wasn't something she shared with most people. When Henric wrapped the little seahorse up, she curled up with her knees to her chest and placed her head on them. To anyone that knew her well, that was saying I'm upset, don't watch me cry please. |
Post #3 The jar of water held tightly in his hands, Carl found a spot at the bank of the Lake. This would be juuust like Muggle fishing. Not that he had ever tried that. However, he had heard that it needed a lot of patience, which he definitely had. At least he would not easily give up. He pointed his wand at the water a couple of meters away and did the whipping wand movement. "Carpe Retractum." Unfortunately, nothing happened. Maybe he lacked determination. Concentrating his thoughts on catching a Flying Seahorse, or really anything at all, he tried again. "Carpe Retractum!" He said loudly with the wand movement. |
Main Activity - Post 7 - Azura + PROFESSOR Quote:
Elsa ran towards her friend "Az are you ok?!" she had just been hit by a rock, straight in the face, of course she wasn't! Elsa got a hold of her chin and carefully turned her face to the side. The rock had made cut on her cheek and it was now bleeding. Oh buggers! She waved her wand quickly emptying her jar, that still rested near the lake, and collecting her things. She then conjured some tissues and gave them to Azura to help stop the bleeding. "Professor, Azura got hit in the face with a rock!!" she exclaimed, surely the professor would be able to help, if not, they would probably have to go to the Hospital Wing. Or she could perform Episkey on her if she allowed it. |
Main Activity Post 5 She was having no luck. Olivia kept trying the spell on the seahorses but couldn’t manage to pull out a single one. And she froze in place and frowned when she heard the professor telling them their time was nearly up. Oh no…oh no…oh no. People were even being dismissed already if they had one flying seahorse. Did that mean they would be kept even longer if they hadn’t? If they couldn’t? The Ravenclaw closed her eyes and took a deep breath trying to calm herself down. Breathe Stone…freaking out isn’t going to help. AT ALL! Once she had gathered herself, she was determined. One seahorse. That’s all she needed. One successful seize and pull to show it wasn’t a total failure. One…two…three… “CAHR-pe re-TRAC-tum!” she cast again, whipping her wand and aiming at one point where she saw a potential target. Once again the orange light appeared and shot towards the water however this time it made contact. Suddenly she had a flying seahorse returned to her, caught in the palm of her hand at first before she recovered from her surprise enough to put it in the jar. It seemed fine as it took up swimming in its new home after recovering from its own surprise. “YES!” |
Main Activity: Post 4 Hearing Professor Draper announce that they only had fifteen minutes left was slight discouraging but Hady ignored the feeling she was beginning to get. It was much like going fishing with her father during the summer months...a waiting game. Either you caught something or you didn't. It didn't really matter whether or not she caught any or how many she did catch the whole point was trying. If anything at all she successfully cast the seize and pull charm so that was a plus for her. Still rocking back and forth on her heels and humming under her breath she waited as patiently as one could wait. Lets give this another try. Flexing her fingers around her wand she canceled the previous attempt opting for a do over. "Carpe Retractum!," Hady cast once again whipping her wand forward towards where she had thought she saw something moving just below the surface of the water. When the bright orange light appeared she knew she had it right and only seconds after the 'line' made contact with the water it came shooting back at her so suddenly with something attached to it that she was caught off-guard and toppled backwards onto her behind. Blinking a few times at the creature that sailed into her she quickly and carefully scooped it up setting it into her enlarged jar. Still sitting on her butt where she had landed she lifted the jar up and peered at the flying seahorse inside. One down. Was it possible to get just one more? |
Mini activity #1 As the professor mentioned her name again, Katherine smiled proudly. Everyone heard that, right? She was appreciated by the professor. She looked around a little to see if anyone looked at her in admiration, but the professor went on, so her investigation was cut short. Soooooo, flying seahorse population was overgrown and they were going to help with that. See, when it came to science, Katherine Moss was the most ruthless. She believed in 'greater good', so she ignored anyone who might object, and focused solely on the spell the professor was demonstrating. Of course, she knew the spell. She had just never practised it, she was still on the list of the second years'. However, she didn't even doubt once that she couldn't do it. So she got to work: pronunciation came first. "KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum. KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum. KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum." Carpe retractum. Was anyone stupid enough to practise wand movement and incantation together? |
Post 5 SPOILER!!: Aww llia Henric heard her muttered a few familiar farewell words which she gave to creatures who had passed on. He didn't say anything more and respectfully bowed down his head to honour it. After a minute of silence, he gently lowered the lifeless creature back down into the lake where he would let nature take its course. Henric sighed and returned to his girlfriend. "llia...we have put it to rest now...its not your fault. It h-happens, we can't do anything more to save it. It's going to be alright now...so don't cry...okay..."he hoped his voice comfort her a little. Henric felt he should do something for her after this. "The class will be over soon..we don't have to catch the seahorses if we don't want to... it'll be fine.."he whispered to her, still sticking close to her. |
Mini activity #2 ...of course, Haddie was using her wand. Of course. Katherine rolled her eyes to herself, hoped with all her heart that the professor didn't see it, and then turned to her own work. "Carpe retractum," she said once again just to be sure she got it right, then she tried the wand movement. Whip like. Whip whip whip. And when done right, a golden or orange light should come out. Could they practise it yet so that she could impress him further? |
Post 3 Ready to try again, Janelle took a moment to really focus on what she was about to do. She was determined to catch a seahorse, before class ended.......no matter how many tries it took her. Maybe if she really concentrated, she could send out a mental signal to the seahorses. Then they would automatically want to come to her. Yeah, right. Annnnyway, Janelle raised her wand and looked out toward the water. If she were a flying seahorse, where would she be right now? Picking a spot that looked good to her, Janelle aimed her wand in that direction. It was as good a spot as any, right? With the most fantastic whip-like motion she could muster, Janelle shouted, "Carpe Retractum". At least this time she got the orangey light emitting from her wand. She had a rope of light. Unfortunately, it brought back nothing.......again. Third time's a charm? |
Main activity #1 Fiiiiiiiinally, activity time! Katherine sat up even straighter in her chair (as if that was possible) and leaned on sliiiiiiightly to hear the professor better. She also took notes on what they were going to do, because she didn't want to forget. Quote:
So she got up and picked a jar. Then, she didn't rush to fill it with water, ooooooooh no! She first examined it with her eyes from the closest point her vision could focus at. Then, because you never knew, she filled it completely with water using "Aguamenti," and waited to see if it would leak. Waaaaaaitiiiiiiiiiing... YAY! It didn't! Satisfied, she turned it over slowly to empty the water on the soil and cleaned the jar. She didn't want the sea-horses to die out of dirt, y'see, so she used "Scourgify!" on the jar twice. Yes, typing all this is tiring for me, but Katherine was having the time of her life. The question was: had the professor seen it? |
Main Activity: Post 5 (finished and leaving) Okay. Sitting on the cold ground beside the lake wasn't the best idea. So after making sure the seahorse was alright Hady rose carefully to her feet holding the jar in one hand against her body. Hopefully her pants weren't all muddy but if they were then 'oh well' she'd just clean them later. Right now she had another seahorse to catch or at least attempt to catch. Hastily pushing a few strands of hair off her face and flexing her fingers around her wand she aimed it out over the water. "Carpe Retractum" was cast firmly the orange glow appearing as the thin white thread-like line hit the water right where she had cast earlier. Barely had the water rippled on impact from the whipping motion she had made had it came hurtling back towards her. Only this time she was ready and raised her hand with her wand up to catch the seahorse. Right in her open palm it landed to which she light dropped it down into the enlarged jar along with it's 'friend'. She was finished now. Returning her wand to it's holster on her wrist she carried the jar that now held two flying seahorses inside to the long table. Setting her jar down she grabbed a label and a quill quickly scribbling out her name on it. Quote:
Sticking the label onto the jar she was done. Returning to the bench where she had sat at the start of the lesson she grabbed her bag and slung it over her shoulder. "Thanks for the lesson Professor!," she called out to him giving him a wave as well. Time to go back to the dorm and get cleaned up. |
Post 4 Well looking on the bright side, Janelle was getting closer each time. Now if she could only put it all together and catch one of the seahorses. The clock was ticking though and she knew that she had to make it happen soon. Repeating her steps once more, Janelle concentrated on the task. She pictured the rope of light. She pictured catching the flying seahorse and reeling him in. Now she was ready to do it for real. With a deep breath, Janelle raised her wand again and pointed it at her not as of yet lucky spot. With a whip of her wand, she said in a commanding voice, Carpe Retractum". Then added, "Come on seahorse. Go toward the light." As her rope reached the water, Janelle waited hopefully. The everything started coming back toward her. She had caught something. Was it a seahorse? As quickly as her excitement had appeared, it faded away. She had caught something alright, but it wasn't a seahorse. It was just a nasty clump of seaweed. That was not going to help her much, unless seahorses liked seaweed and she could use it for bait. With a sigh, Janelle prepared to try again. |
Main activity #2 Well, Katherine wasn't the type to fish for compliments. She was sure the professor would notice her efforts when her seahorses lived the most anyway, so she took a breath to cast water again. Wait, why was her idol, Miss Head Girl TiaMarie enlarging the jar? Katherine quickly turned her eyes at hers and squiiiiiinted. She then tried to guess the real life size of the creature. How... large would it be? She knew the textbook information OF COURSE, and she quickly set her jar on her desk to bring out the ruler from her pencil case. Then, she literally measured the height and radius of the jar... calculated the space of it... and roughly calculated the space of the seahorse, assuming she caught TWO LARGE ones... Then she picked up her jar and squinted moooooore while trying to imagine HOW it would be in there... Nah, it was good. The jar would be enough even for two large seahorses. Anyway, she put away her pencil case and ruler, grabbed her wand and filled the wide-enough jar fully with water, using "Aguamenti," as her wand drew a sideways S. Now, to find the perfect spot... |
Post 4 :: Attempt 2 Ariadne pulled the last of the seaweed off her face and tossed it back into the lake. Her face felt wet and slimy, and little drops of lake water trickled off her face and on to the ground. DOUBLE EW. She sighed and looked out toward the lake again. Should she even try this again? Apparently she knew how to seize and pull; HOWEVERRRR, she seized and pulled the wrong objects. MMKAY. Attempt two! Ariadne raised her wand and pointed it toward the lake. "Carpe Retractum!" she called out. She gave her wand a whip as she said this. What was the secret to specifying just WHAT she would seize and pull? What if she seized and pulled a GRINDYLOW? This had not been covered in class! Again, the water rippled, and out came...A FLYING SEAHORSE! There it was, there it was! Ariadne started to bounce in place but remembered she had a jar full of water in her hands. She positioned herself underneath where the seahorse would fall, and...IN IT PLOPPED! She got one, she got one! Just ONE, but it was better than a face full of seaweed! |
Main activity #3 See, rushing to get a spot for such activities is a total waste of time. No, patience is key here. Patiently observe people, see where the seahorses concentrated, note who had the most luck, and then kiiiiiiiindly ask people at the best spot to move aside only a liiiiiiiittle. People always move aside, everyone is too polite to say no. And then, make yourself comfortable. People also aaaaaaalwaaaaaays squeeze themselves if you don't. Then, do whatever you have to do effectively and quickly. That's exactly what Katherine did. She waited for a few minutes, noted the best place and then kiiiiiindly asked people to make room for her, thank you very much. Now, she didn't rush again. Instead, she obseeeeeerved HOW. How did people cast the charm? 1. The flying seahorses... for some reason... didn't really fly until this moment? 2. She should practise the spell on empty water before she actually tried catching a seahorse, because that rope didn't look easy to control. And she was NOT falling on her bum while trying to control a spell, tyvm. So, she cleared her throat and thought of what the spell did. What was it used for? To pull objects, with a rope made out of light... to. pull, objects. with. a. magic. rope. She closed her eyes momentarily and imagined herself casting the charm: what she would say, how the light would come out of her wand, what would happen... she imagined all, and replayed it a few times in her mind until it almost felt like a real memory. Then, she opened her eyes. She believed she could do it! Showtiiiiiiime, then! "Carpe retractum," she gracefully said, as if this was the hundredth time she was casting this spell, while she whipped her wand. A golden thread came out of it, but it was awfully thin, and... it didn't hold. She wasn't expecting it to hold longer anyway. On the contrary, she was grinning from ear to ear. She HAD managed to create something on her FIRST try - a spell taught at THIRD year. The professor noted that down, right? |
Mini #1 Bella wasn't sure if she really wanted to catch seahorses this way. It made her sad that anyone would do this as a sport, but listening to the Professor explain the control factor for the lake and a needed ingredient for potions made her think that maybe it was alright. She got up with her wand in hand to practice the seize and pull charm, very eager to learn a new spell. "Okay, so I need to move my arm in a whip like motion." She muttered softly to herself as she moved her arms forward and whipping it back. That was easy enough. Bella thought, before moving on to practice saying the spell. |
Main activity #4 Whether he did or not, Katherine didn't know. She couldn't afford to waste more time by waiting for approval (and anyway, he was a CoMC professor, so he would praise her when she caught those SEAHORSES), so she took a deep breath, replayed that image in her mind once, and tried with more force this time: "Carpe retractum!" + WHIP. A stronger thread appeared this time, and she focused on keeping it. Then, once she made sure it wouldn't rip, she tried pulling it back. Puuuuuuuuuull and puuuuuuuuuuull she did, until she saw the tip of it OH LOOK SOMETHING WAS... attached. "Grrross!" A gross mossy thing. No, just because her surname was moss, it didn't mean she liked them! She wasn't touching it and it was going straaaaaaight back to the lake. |
Post 5 :: Outcome/turning in jar Ariadne looked into her jaw in awe. TOTAL AWE. There it was--her very own flying seahorse! Sure, she didn't catch loads like she thought she would, but after finding out how hard it was to catch just ONE, she was pretty proud of this one. She should give it a name! It would be...JERRY. She didn't know WHY its name was JERRY, but that was the first name that came to her mind, so she stuck with it. JERRY, the flying seahorse Ariadne took her jar to the table. Finding a label, she wrote the following across it: Slytherin First Year Jerry the Flying Seahorse Make it a good potion, please! Then she looked one more time at the flying seahorse she had caught before leaving the jar on the table. She collected her things then waved at the professor as she left the area. "Bye, Professor! I had an AWESOME time!" she said. |
Main activity #5 Okay, she had her jar cleaned and filled with water. She believed she had mastered the spell (she even caught moss, which wasn't funny at all despite having that surname) so nooooooow, it was time for real business. She was a patient girl, so she didn't send random ropes into the lake, and even GLARED at anyone that did so. Did her classmates have to be so thick? They were SCARING the seahorses away! Ugh, seriously, "CARPE RETRACTUM!" The surface of the water had MOVED and it looked like something was putting out its head, so she STRIKED with a WHIP of her wand and an ORANGE rope emerged from the tip of it AAAAAAAAND.......... YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! Celebration was for later. She QUICKLY pulled it towards herself - PULL, PULL, PULL, and the lid of her jar was already open, so without losing the rope (wow, that requires SUCH a mental focus!), she caaaaaaarefully placed the squirming animal inside and closed the lid. TADAAAAAAA. Had everyone seen that? That patience ALWAYS paid off? Ahem, anyway, once she arrogantly smirked and showed off in her mind, she focused back on the lake. Again, she had to wait AND IT WOULD BE GREAT IF PEOPLE STOPPED SHOOTING RANDOM ROPES. Ugh, she wasn't going to leave this spot without the second seahorse. Nope. "CARPE RETRACTUM!" she yelled when she saw something and pulled - WHAT was wrong with these people!?!?! It was a rotten, half-eaten sandwich and - BLEEEEEEEGH - she had to turn to side to stop the retching urge that STRONGLY took over. "Ble - *cough cough*-" She gulped, fanned herself, and took a deep breath. Ugh. There was NO way she was looking at that thing again, so she intentionally ended the spell, and only after she was sure she was fine did she turn back. It was still there, so she quickly closed her eyes as she shoot a vanishing spell. Another set of deep breaths... and she looked again. Oh, okay, thankfully it was gone. Once this was over, she was going straightly to the groundskeeper to talk to him about it. These people had to be named and punished! Ugh, anyway, once she had control of her stomach ...well, this was boring... LOOK SOMETHING - "CARPE RETRACTUM!" with a WHIP motion - a golden rope this time anddddddddddd........... BINGO! Katherine QUICKLY pulled it towards herself as she knelt down. She kept the rope on once more while she kept the jar tightly between her knees. Her free hand moved to open the lid, and then she QUICKLY placed the second seahorse in before the other one even understood what was going on. Then, she sort of threw aside her wand and secured the lid TIGHTLY, and siiiiiiiighed in relief. SHE DID IT! SHE GOT NOT ZERO, NOT ONE BUT T W O SEAHORSES! Yeah, her mouth really nearly touched her ears. She held the jar to examine if the creatures really had enough space. They seemed to be doing okay, and anyway, it wasn't really her responsibility now. If the professor thought the jar was big enough, it was big enough. Who was she to question him? After calming down, she quickly walked to her desk to write her name down on it. Quote:

Post 5 OK, it was going to happen this time. If it was possible to will something to happen, Janelle was going to give it everything she had. "One more time", she said to herself. Closing her eyes, she concentrated as hard as she possibly could........without getting a headache. Visualizing every step of the process, Janelle was sure that she could be successful this time. She had improved on every try and this was going to be the one. Winding up like a muggle baseball pitcher, Janelle launched into the whipping action with her wand. "Carpe Retractum!" She watched as her rope of light formed once again and stretched out, landing in the lake. After a few moments, Janelle thought she felt a tug. Hoping she seized the right thing this time, she gave her wand a pull. As the rope began to return to her, she held her breath. And then..........she had done it. A flying seahorse was coming her way. Holding tight to the jar, she positioned it so that the seahorse landed safely in the water. With joy and tremendous relief, Janelle inspected her catch. "Thank you little seahorse, for letting me catch you." Now that Janelle had succeeded, she hoped that her little seahorse would not end up in some potion. Janelle heard the professor announce that they could leave once they had caught a seahorse. She grabbed a label and wrote her name on it. Then she placed the label on her jar. Janelle was reluctant to leave her seahorse. After all, it had taken a lot of hard work to catch him. That and the fact that she was unsure about his future. Nontheless, she walked over and placed her jar on the table as instructed. Then she had a second thought. "Professor, I don't suppose we could keep them? Janelle didn't know what kind of pets seahorses made, but she wouldn't mind trying. |
Mini #2 After doing the whip motion with her wand a few times until she felt comfortable that she was doing it right, Bella lowered her wand. She didn't want to accidentally do both of them together when they were supposed to be done separately. She repeated the incantation in her head, before saying it out loud. "KAHR-pee...ruh-track-tum," No, that didn't sound completely correct. She was sure Professor Draper had said KAHR-pay not KAHR-pee, so she tried it again. "KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum." Bella repeated the incantation several times until she was sure she was saying it correctly without messing up. It didn't take long before she was ready to try both together. |
