CoMC Lesson 1: A Day at the Lake!

Though your early morning class is normally held right outside of the barn, Professor Draper has decided to switch it up for the day. Following the instructions on your house noticeboard, you make it down to the lake for your first class of the morning. Luckily your Professor was feeling merciful and left a sign by the usual meeting place for those who failed to check the announcements. However, if that applies to you, you better be running to class. James doesn't tolerate tardiness.

The crisp late-January air greets you as you make your way towards a row of benches that sit a good distance from the lake. The grass is sporting a fresh layer of cold dew, however, the lake looks peaceful and undisturbed. Hopefully you wore layers, it’s a little chilly out.

Your seat on the bench faces both the lake and a portable chalkboard that Professor Draper rolled out for the lesson. And speaking of your Professor, he can be found standing in front of a large table off to the side. He stands there not only to greet you as you come forward to find your seat, but also to make sure that you don’t touch any of the empty glass jars on the table, those are for later.

Please pick a spot on the bench, class will begin promptly at 9:00 am!

OOC: Hi I’m BEYOND excited and incredibly nervous for our first official CoMC lesson together! However, please note that this should NOT be your character’s first lesson of the term! By this point in the year they should’ve already attended several lessons and will at least know some very basics about the subject!

Please remember all SS Rules and Classroom Rules apply. I have ways of knowing who didn't read them!
+ I will post in approximately 13-16 hours to start the lesson. Please get comfortable in the meantime, but try to keep excess chatter at a minimum ^^

Class has officially started! If you're just joining us now, please post as if you've been present the entire time. We'd love to have you join in at any point!!

Norah Kittredge knew BETTER than to be late, okay? Professor grumpyface Draper whose face wasn't really as grumpy as his rules made it seem would probably send her away before she even got to see any of the cute animals, and if that wasn't tragic then she didn't know what was. She'd left the Great Hall armed with her favorite fuzzy sweater under her robes early enough that the fact that she'd forgotten to go to the lake and initially showed up at the usual lesson spot didn't cause much of an issue. That was a nice sign he'd put up. She tried not to be surprised that he'd been so forgiving because believing the best in people was practically a LAW, but it was harder than you'd think. Grumpy rules, after all. They made people awfully mysterious.

Aaaaaand nobody was there yet. AW YEAH. She hadn't even had to RUN or ANYTHING. That had to be a world record. Hopefully Professor Draper would appreciate it, but just in case he didn't, the prefect put on her biggest, beamiest smile as she took a seat on a bench riiiiiiiight in the front. "Goooooood morning, Professor!" BEAMY BEAM. What a time to be alive. Was he excited? What was going to go in the jars? Would it be lake water? Would it be lake CREATURES? Would he notice if she borrowed one for flower keeping reasons? Why had he said they need to bring their wits? Would they have to tell witty jokes? Did he like puns? Did he know any good puns? 'Cause she didn't know any good puns. Could they have a lesson on that instead? In an effort to keep from EXPLODING from all the questions, Norah crossed her legs and rested her chin on her palm as she set herself up to give Professor Draper a good stare. You never knew what you could tell by just staring. Whoever pretended it was rude was just missing out on all the fun.

SilverTiger 02-17-2016 07:28 AM

Mornings and cold still were two things that made Brooklyn extra irritable, but at least layers helped with one of the two. Layers and a couple of well-cast heating charms, but either way, she wasn’t freezing walking out to the lake. Her occasional sojourn outside to read in the quiet had helped with that too, as she was more used to the chill. The hour, though, was another story. At least she finished eating the toast she’d snagged from the Great Hall before she arrived. It meant there wasn’t any evidence, and also she wouldn’t be starving. Both things that made it all a bit more bearable.

“Good morning Professor Draper,” she said, greeting the man with her usual smile reserved for the professors, making her way over to her chosen bench. She’d given a glance over at Norah, sitting there staring at the professor, too. But she held her tongue, instead taking her seat quietly. She was tempted to take out a book, but for now she’d just wait. At least she had a good vantage point for arrivals. She could hope that nobody annoying chose to sit by her.

Callie 02-17-2016 07:37 AM

Haddie shivered and muttered curses under her breath not suitable for the tender aged ears of her peers. She was still a distance away and out of earshot of the Child Hater, but she wouldn't be much longer. A few more steps and Haddie let her voice fall silent, only the clattering of her teeth could be heard now.

That. Man. Was. A. Sadist.

This was conclusive proof of that. The entire year to hold a lesson at the lake, those warm summer days that started the school year, or the warm summer days that will close it, any one of those would have been appropriate. But, nope. Professor Surly-pants picks the middle of the winter. The young Californian was not pleased. It didn't matter how much she layered or how much she bundled up, the cold got in. It always did. And this was only her second winter outside of California, so no, she wasn't used to it yet.

Haddie was cold, tired, uncomfortable and cranky. Not a good combination for her. There was no love in her eyes for the man as she approached. He looked as smug as ever, no doubt loving how miserable the children were. Why the man ever became a teacher is beyond her. Though whether or not he was a teacher and not some insidious creature like that Hag, feeding off the misery of children was still up for debate in her mind. "Drapes," she muttered in greeting. She said it distinctly as if it were one of those curses she had been muttering just out of earshot. Haddie found a seat, and as usual, couldn't help herself. "Planning on leaving anyone else frozen stiff today? You know, like you have in the past?"

RandomRaven 02-17-2016 09:07 AM

It's freaking cold today. And Professor Draper wanted them to have a class outside. Wasn't it just perfect?

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!

Putting on her thick winter coat (and of course her school uniform was under it), scarf and of course the mittens, the you lioness walked to the lake where they're gonna have the class. This grumpyface Draper had better provided them with bonfire, or heating charm... And some warm drinks too. Unfortunately not. Seriously, maybe this man wanted to make the students suffered hypothermia and died frozen.... Great! Professor Draper." Ava greeted that man. "What a nice and lovely weather, Professor. I even can't feel my fingers now."

Sarcastic enough, huh?

She went to an empty seat and waited until she froze to death the class had started.

DuckyLinJi 02-17-2016 09:34 AM

norah~

It had been a few lessons already but Yoongi still wasn't sure if he liked the Professor. It wasn't that he hated him or anything but he found him uncomfortable and awkward to be around with. He highly suspected the man was jealous of his Head Boy badge because he clearly never gotten it during his school years.

This time the lesson was at the Lake and the open field was even colder because of the weather today. Yoongi had wrapped a big coat around himself, the head boy badge hidden now as it was pinned on his Gryffindor uniform under the coat. As he arrived, he saw the Professor and forced himself to say a hello. "Hello Professor" he greeted before turning around and he of course spotted Norah and she was staring at.....wait...she wasn't staring at him but at the Professor. Refraining the urge to turn back around and glare at the man, Yoongi simply walked towards the Hufflepuff Prefect and stood in front of her, blocking her view. "Can i sit here?" he asked, pointing next to her.

Jealous much?

StarShine 02-17-2016 11:02 AM

Gonna assume Yoongi did sit by Norah ahem

9 AM sharp.

Katherine Mary Moss was there as sharply as she could. She was also witty by default, had a perfect common sense thank you very much, and had her perfectly working, polished-just-last-night wand saaaaaaaafely in her pocket. She had so far impressed the man (or at least he hadn't shooed her away from his lessons yet), so she was as confident as Katherine Moss could ever be (i.e. VERY confident). She was even relaxed to a degree.

She was gonna rock this class again.

"Hello, Professor Draper," she greeted the man with a polite and cute smile. Then she turned to look at the other people - her protector Head Boy, the weird Hufflepuff Prefect, the cold Slytherin girl, Ava and the girl, who was being extremely rude as usual. Katherine secretly readied her best condescending smile for the moment Professor reprimanded the girl and sat at the other side of Yoongi.

"Hi, Yoongi and Norah," she greeted them and smiled at Ava... who was complaining about the weather.

Yes, it was cold, but surely the Professor had a great reason for that? Good gracious, these people were such cry-babies.

Ameh 02-17-2016 11:21 AM

His head still hurt. Jaemin snuggled himself tighter inside his jacket, half-hidden inside of a scarf as he made his way down to the lake. It was a good thing he checked the board, because the tired little boy would definitely have not made it to class on time had he gone to the wrong place; there was no bouncing today, and the normally bright smile was replaced with a sleepy frown.

He had been feeling off the night before, and what had felt like a little bit of ickiness had blossomed into a full-blown cold overnight, complete with sniffles and a little red nose. He had come to school equipped with bandages, but no cold remedies... which meant he would either have to tough it out or see the nurse later. He would normally prefer the former, but when he actually was sick he turned into a helpless, sad little lump, so it would probably be the latter.

Still, Jaemin gave the professor a tired wave, barely taking in the jars on the table as he found a place to sit down and curl up into a warm little ball.

Jean Granger 02-17-2016 12:14 PM

Carl hurried to the Lake, having forgotten that they were not gathering at the usual meeting place. He definitely did not want to be late, knowing how Professor Draper disliked tardiness. Also ... today might just be the day he gets to see unicorns. He would hate to miss that.

The Hufflepuff walked towards the row of benches where people were arriving, noticing that he was quite early despite dropping by the wrong location. He smiled and greeted the Professor. "Good morning, Professor Draper!" He did notice the empty glass jars but well, it was empty. Not interested. So he picked a bench and took his seat.

And as usual, he looked around for unicorns.

Kolyander 02-17-2016 12:54 PM

It didn't matter that it was early. It didn't matter that it was cold. And it certainly didn't matter that it was the end of January and the lesson was to be held outside near the lake. All Hady seemed to take notice of was the fact that her first lesson of the day was by far one of her favorites. One she was sure to get a 'O' in on her OWLs at the end of the term.

Wearing nothing more then her usual lesson attire and having her hair pulled back off her face into a tight but neat braid Hadleigh made her way towards the lake a few minutes earlier then needed. Spotting the benches from a little bit aways still told her she was in the right place. "Morning, Professor Draper," she greeted with a small grin as she passed the man on her way to selecting a seat on the bench in the first row.

Now what was it there would be doing today?

Hera 02-17-2016 01:39 PM

Tardiness was not a thing that he did to classes that were likely to keep him awake... unlike HoM. By this stage in the morning he had already gone for his wake-me-up run, had showered, changed for class, ate, and was on time and alert for CoMC class. Like... 9 am wasn't even 'early', really. Even the change of venue couldn't throw him off his game today.

"Morning, Professor Draper," Zeke greeted with a nod as he gave the man's jars a quick look.

Interesting.

Were they going to be harvesting something today???

Zeke took his seat on a length of one of the benches near Hady, sending her a quick "Morning," greeting too.

PhoenixRising 02-17-2016 01:51 PM

It was early, yes. It was cold and made even colder by the fact that the Professor decided to hold the lesson down by the lake today which was definitely a colder area on the grounds. But surely he had a reason for it; professors, she discovered, didn't just do things for the thrill of it. They had reasons. Perhaps they would be learning about merpeople or the squid, but wouldn't that have been better reserved for a day in May or June, when they could swim? Then again, the Triwizard Tournament of 1994, she recalled reading that the champions had to swim in one of their tasks. The task held in the Winter time too; perhaps not catching hypothermia was part of the challenge.

Nonetheless, Tia was dressed warm, choosing to don leggings under her skirt that morning, and sneakers instead of flats.

"Morning Professor Draper," Tia greeted upon seeing the professor. Deciding it best to not sit near the same people all the time, the Head Girl went and sat down beside a young first year Hufflepuff (Carl), whom she hadn't the chance to really meet yet. "Morning," she greeted to him too, hoping he wouldn't be intimidated by her because of her badge. "I'm Tia."

FearlessLeader19 02-17-2016 01:54 PM

Goodness it was cold! Rachel wondered what on Earth Professor Draper would be teaching today that made him move the class to the Lake. "G-good morning, Professor,'' she greeted with a slight shiver as she drew her Ravenclaw scarf around her a little more. "I hope you're well.'' She cast a curious glance at the jars before turning her attention to the persons that had arrived.

She smiled at Hady, Carl, Katherine, Tia and Ava on her way to Haddie. Her poor best friend looked so miserable that the girl just wanted to bundle her up with more layers of warm clothing. Unfortunately, this could not be done. "Oh, Haddie. Professor Drapes, I mean Draper would no do that intentionally.'' Rachel had confidence in her Professors.

Daydreamer11 02-17-2016 02:47 PM

Janelle made her way down to the lake, enjoying every step of the walk. It was favorite class time and she couldn't wait to see what animal they would be working with today. It was a little chilly, but she liked it. January was her month and she enjoyed every minute of it.

Reaching the classroom area, Janelle looked around to see who was already there. "Hello Professor", she said with a smile. Spotting her friends, she began to greet them. "Hey Rachel, Hey Zeke". Then Janelle found an empty spot on a bench and sat down. Barely able to contain herself, she hoped that class would start soon.

MunchyBubbles 02-17-2016 03:16 PM

It was early morning..

And it was freezing outside. The young Ravenclaw made her way down to the lake slowly, she didn't want to slip! Also she was a bit wary about classes lately. Ever since potions..

She made her way to the benches and waved a mittened hand at her dorm mates. Before turning to the professor.

"Good Morning Professor Draper." She said with slightly chattering teeth as she sat down on a bench and stared out at the lake as she pulled her cloak in tightly around her to help ward off the chill in the air.

Sadly there was nothing to do about the cold inside her heart and she bit her lip and looked down, shivering slightly.

She wondered if Jace..

No Azura stop! Just... Stop. No more.

And whatever you do.. Don't cry.

Even if she did cry it like freeze to her face! That probably wasn't a good look!

But she wondered how Jace was doing with the cold and if he was okay? Should she have brought some spare mittens?

Stefan 02-17-2016 04:28 PM

Luck was on his side, because Jace was up early that morning for his first class that day. He knew Draper didn’t like late comers. That man honoured time, and it was something that him and Jace have in common. It was always frowned upon to be tardy...unless of course he had a valid reason like wrestling a full grown troll along his way to class. Dressed in layers of his standard uniform, Jace headed for the usual CoMC meeting place, only to find a notice that they are to meet near the Lake. The half-Japanese sighed inwardly, feeling helpless this time. Draper really doesn’t have mercy.

When he got to the area, he made his way towards the very front of the class, and inclined his head towards the man, half of his face wrapped in his Ravenclaw scarf. “Ohayo, Professor.” And...what are those clear jars for? Will they go...fishing? Jace didn’t like the idea one bit.

Too cold to even acknowledge his friends, Jace took a seat by himself upfront, and waited for the others to arrive. “’choo!” Eh...oops?

SniffSniff.

Austin, as everyone in this class should know by now, was not a morning person. His mental clock didn't start until 11 o'clock at the earliest. Anything before then was crazy. When he told his dad his dilemma of not being able to bring his tea anywhere, he was sent a 'travel mug'. Which was strange since it didn't look like a mug. There was a handle, yes but it wasn't ceramic nor did it have fun designs on it, such as a real mug did. It was silver and black, and probably made out of some metal. Austin wasn't sure. But, it carried his tea just the same, and he was grateful for this muggle thing.

He tried to mumble a pleasant "Good Morning Professor" before he sat on a bench.

Goblinfrog 02-17-2016 05:01 PM

Kitty kept her nose tucked inside her long red scarf as she hurried down to the Care of Magical Creatures lesson. She had bought it at Hogsmeade and she absolutely loved it.

"Good morning Professor," said Kitty as she sat down on one of the benches and waved at Rachel, Haddie, Azura, Tia, and Hady.

Steelsheen 02-17-2016 06:02 PM

The Creatures area is usually one of the loveliest places in Hogwarts. It’s a big reason why Tenacius liked hanging around there.

Today however was one of those days where he wished the Professor decided to just hold classes indoors. And bring the creatures to them. He doesn’t care how impossible or inappropriate that sounds, but he was freezing his tushie and the creatures should at least indulge them non-feathery, non-furry, warm-blooded minders.

"Mornin' Prof" The Gryffindor greeted the other man behind a muffled scarf as he took his seat on a bench.

VRSCIKA 02-17-2016 06:23 PM

It was a bit chilly out as Ilia walked out onto the grounds, but she liked it that way. This country still seemed warm in comparison to her previous home, even two years later. She loved the brisk air and smiled a little as she walked into the lesson. "Good Morning Professor." She was always happiest in this class as well. There was nothing better than working with creatures. Well....if Henric was already here it would be a little better.....but oh well. She had only one brush with death concerns so far this year, that wasn't too shabby for Hogwarts. She decided up front sounded good, why not? She picked a place on the bench and settled herself. While she waited for class to start, she took a moment to put her hair in a bun.....you just never knew when working with creatures....

Lissy Longbottom 02-17-2016 06:23 PM

Why did Scarlett have the feeling that they were going to be doing some sort of fishing...activity thing with those jars?

The Hufflepuff was COLD, and extra cold today, since she had just gotten over a small bout of the flu and hadn't fully bounced back yet. Thanks a lot, Florida. Apparently even in the warm, sunny skies of Disneyworld, you could still get a really nasty winter cold. So she'd worn a few extra layers to compensate, all topped off with her Hufflepuff scarf and matching gloves.

Why did professors always want to have classes OUTSIDE?

Jojogali 02-17-2016 06:25 PM

SPOILER!!: Hey Hady, Azura and Jace

Move your legs girl!! Her voice shouted in her head. Being late was not cool and she knew Professor Draper wasn't fond of tardiness. He had made it very clear before. But it was his fault to move the class's location. She had missed the announcement on her bulletin board, but there was no way she could miss it in the previous location. Luckily she always arrived a few minutes earlier. She made it to class just in time, halting a few inches from the bench, saving her knee from an unfortunate encounter. Thank Merlin.

She looked around, searching for familiar faces among the group of people already sitting and spotted Hady, Azura and Jace, all seating nearby. She waved to them, saying hi and sat herself in a free spot next to Hady. "How's it going?" she asked in a hushed tone, pulling her notebook and parchment from her bag. Elsa then proceeded to clear her voice and greet the professor "Good Morning Professor Draper".

She could tell it was cold, but she had been perfecting her warming charms and they seemed to be working fine. She felt specially cozy in her Hogwarts uniform. She looked again in Azura's direction and waved again, she looked...odd. "Is everything ok?" she mouthed concerned.

Casey O 02-17-2016 06:44 PM

Ellery was bundled up in like FIVE different layers of clothing. First was long underwear and a long sleeved shirt, then a sweater and pants, then a jacket with a hood, a hat, gloves, fuzzy socks, and boots. A scarf was wrapped around her neck and head, and covered the front of her mouth. She waddled closer to where everyone was gathered - the large amount of clothing seriously restricted her movement.

"Hrlou prrfrssor," she said, her voice muffled by the scarf. She had been freezing this morning, okay?

She went and sat next to her best friend, Katherine Mary Moss, though she avoided eye contact with Norah the PREFECT. Yuck. Power corrupts, people!!!!

"Hlo," she said to Katherine, then pulled her scarf down a little. "Hello," she tried again. "Pretend that I can pull off this much clothing, mkay?"

WhittyBitty 02-17-2016 07:08 PM

Why Professor Draper insisted on having a lesson by the lake on a COLD day was lost on Esme. However, she was not in a bad mood. Seeing the notice earlier that morning, she made sure to bundle up for the late-January weather. She also made sure to go straight towards the lake. There would be no freezing or being late on her part today.

"Hello, Professor Draper." Why was he looking over empty jars? That seemed a little odd though she supposed that the explanation would come a bit later. Maybe he just didn't want them to break which was understandable seeing as glass could be very dangerous even if it could be fixed magically.

Making her way towards a seat she waved to her friends as she passed them. Today she was going to sit by Hady. "Hey!" she told her friend with a smile. This was one of their favourite classes and she was sure that the Snake was every bit as curious and excited to start as she was.

Skipping her way down to the lake, Marsha was nice and warm when she got there, and she had gloves on to keep her hands warm while they talked through the start of the lesson, but they would obviously come off when it was time to do anything with creatures. Having been out for a run at 5am with Bastien, it really wasn’t that cold any more, so aside from her thicker winter robes the Welsh Lion didn’t have any additional protection against the January weather.

Smiling at the Professor, she waved her hand as she picked the last seat onthe end of a bench next to a younger Ravenclaw (Katherine), Yoongi and Norah. ”Good morning Professor, it’s a lovely morning.” She started before grinning at her older friends. ”Morning Yoongi! Hi Norah! They both got wide smiles and a quick wave before she turned to the younger student next to her. ”Hi, I’m Marsha. Third year, Gryffindor.” She nodded her head and grinned at her.

…. It was okay she sat here, right? If not, she could move and sit on the other side of Norah...

Mentions of Jace, Elsa, Kitty and Esme

Almost as if her thoughts had conjured him.. Azura saw Jace walk down to the class and her purple eyes lit up ever so softly as she saw the Japanese boy, only to have the light in them dim.. as he just walked on by.. Did he wave at her? She wasn't sure.

She bit her lip a little as she felt her heart fall to her feet. Was it.. too late to leave class?

What was she thinking? She shouldn't leave class!! Instead she moved to the back and picked a seat right on the edge of the class.. so Jace couldn't see her.It would be better if he didn't know she was here right?

Stupid feelings.. Stupid stupid feelings.

She spotted Kitty And she slowly waved to her and Esme as well.. before she turned to see Elsa She managed a wave at her before she saw her speak..

She slowly shook her head.. "Later." She mouthed.. Things were far from okay..

She had seen the notice for the class including the special instructions. So Olivia had known to come to the lake rather than the usual spot for their Care of Magical Creatures classes. However that didn’t mean the first year was off the hook for getting there. Wrapped up snuggly and secure for a late January day…morning…the Ravenclaw hurried across the grounds to make the 9 am time for the lesson. Her quick movements helped keep her from freezing but not by much. And when she finally reached the spot where she spotted everyone else already gathered, she was really hoping it got warmer.

“Good morning Professor,” she greeted simply as she moved to take one of the few empty seats on the benches. As for her friends, Olivia offered a faint smile as she prepared for the lesson in the chill. Oooo jars…for something.

WeasleyGirl 02-17-2016 09:03 PM

Hugo put on a jacket before going to class, this time was Care of Magical Creatures. Making his way to the grounds he thought about starting to study for the OWLs, he already gave up on Arithmancy and History of Magic 'cause he was no good at it or was too lazy to even try to study but he didn't wanna fail so...yeah. Besides it was a lot he had to study and didn't wanna leave it until the last minute.

The prefect arrived just in time as always and greeted Draper, "Hello professor, what's up?" and took a sit. He wondered for what they were going to use those jars. Hmm.

This slytherin was much for early morning lessons. The night before he was up all night just because he couldn't fall asleep. Luckily he woke up around 8am to find out there was a Care of Magical Creatures class. He might as well check it out yeah? He managed to get some breakfast, if you count breakfast consisting of sugary cereals. He was still trying to wake up and rubbed his eyes making his way down to the lesson. Bloody merlin it was cold out here. He forgot his gloves in his dorm. He knew he was forgetting something.

He bundled up his coat and cuddled his scarf closer to his neck. This wind chill was not cool. Pun intended. As he made his way to the front of the class, he saw the Professor and he just nodded to him. He didn't want to move his hands out of his pockets. He wondered where they were gonna learn with the jars.

And.... That's the official start!

James stood around waiting, checking his watch every few seconds. Had he been too hopeful in thinking Hogwarts students would be capable of following directions properly? Must he take them by the hand and actively lead them to class next time? Every time he managed to give any of them the slightest benefit of the doubt, they disappointed.

However, he was most disappointed in the blue house. Weren’t they supposed to be the first at lessons every single time? With that thought in mind, it was surprising to see that the first arrival was not of the blue variation. She was yellow. And with a badge, too.

After having spoken with the Head Child, James was starting to think they just gave badges to anyone these days. Though, arriving first did earn this peppy one a few points in his book. Congrats. ”… Good morning, Miss Kittridge,” the extra syllables were completely unnecessary and would therefore not be repeated in his own greeting. She had too much pep in her step. He didn’t like it. And the staring was strange. Not unsettling, but strange.

She was tempted to take out a book, but for now she’d just wait. At least she had a good vantage point for arrivals. She could hope that nobody annoying chose to sit by her.

The second arrival showed up only seconds after the first, again not a blue. Interesting. This one, however, was a complete different turn in demeanor. The difference between Brooklyn and Norah was that Brooklyn was fairly easy to tolerate, whilst Norah took much more patience. Either way, the Slytherin was appreciated.

”Miss Andrews,” he nodded in response. It would be nice to have a class full of Brooklyn-types, however, he knew better than to get his hopes up. This was Hogwarts.

The first arrival from the blue house, it seemed. The only color they were missing was red.

...And this is exactly why he didn’t get his hopes up.

The permanent smug expression he wore on his face didn’t falter as she grumpily greeted him. However, he did raise his brows ever-so-slightly. He almost preferred Peppy Prefect over there. ”Watch your tongue, Denaker. That’s three points from Ravenclaw.” Additionally, he did not care at all to figure out what she was referring to. Oh and she was automatically starting at strike two.

I even can't feel my fingers now."

Sarcastic enough, huh?

And a red. The had finished the set now, yeah?

James was almost pleased to see participation across all the houses, however the snide comment from this one took away any sign of pleasantness from his face. "It is lovely," he nodded with absolutely no hint of sarcasm. James loved this kind of weather. Though lovely wasn't a word that often graced his tongue. However, "Watch your tone, Miss Burton. Two points," which he was obviously taking away, not rewarding.

As he arrived, he saw the Professor and forced himself to say a hello. "Hello Professor" he greeted before turning around and he of course spotted Norah and she was staring at.....wait...she wasn't staring at him but at the Professor.

Ah, this next arrival was one all too familiar to James. The Head Child had arrived. James wore an extra warm smile just for him. So that he didn't tap into breaking that sensitive heart again. How thoughtful. James ought to get an award for this. "Hello Yoongi," he watched curiously as the Gryffindor made his way to sit over with ah. Did the badges collect together? Is that how it worked these days?

And yes, he noticed the frustration on the boys face. It was amusing.

Katherine secretly readied her best condescending smile for the moment Professor reprimanded the girl and sat at the other side of Yoongi.

Little Katherine Moss, always prepared. James had been keeping a close eye on this one ever since her little office visit. A child afraid of dogs wasn't one well fit for Care of Magical Creatures. However, she proved to have a lot of resilience and she earned respect for that.

He gave her a small nod, watching as she went to choose her seat. Careful in even seat selection. This little girl was of a complete different variety.

The beauty of switching up the lesson venue was getting to see the bright red faces of those who hadn't prepared by checking the noticeboards. It was also a great way of teaching them a lesson. Sometimes it takes running to class one time in order to stress the importance of preparation.

"Good morning, Mr. Leonard," he gave the boy the smallest-hint-of-a-smile. Despite the slightly red face, the enthusiasm from this one was appreciated. He was starting to think he'd have a full class of drama queens by the time everyone had arrived. These rare yellow-house kids were nice to have in small doses.

"Morning, Professor Draper," she greeted with a small grin as she passed the man on her way to selecting a seat on the bench in the first row.

Now what was it there would be doing today?

Despite having learned most names by now, James didn't much more about most of his students. Aside from how terrible they were at , that is. However, there were the select few that had made an effort to visit during office hours.

Which is how he knew the next arrival. "Miss Lynch," he let a small smile slip as she walked by. She was one of the good ones. Always prepared. Never complained. Always willing.

Interesting.

Were they going to be harvesting something today???

Perhaps they were on a lucky streak here? Hopefully this continued because there needed to be an offset with the amount of younger students they had. The older ones tended to be much more respectful. Which is why he appreciated Zeke Browne. Kid was respectful as long as he was respected back. More of them ought to take a page out of Zeke's book.

"Good Morning, Mr. Browne," he nodded.

"Morning," she greeted to him too, hoping he wouldn't be intimidated by her because of her badge. "I'm Tia."

James much preferred Tia over her counterpart. She was much less dramatic. "Morning," he nodded in return, noting that she chose to sit by a younger student. Yes, definitely liked her more than the Hyland kid.

... Merlin, drama queens. Every. Single. One. Of. Them.

He gave her a look before nodding, "Good morning, Rachel," and watched as she went to take a seat. He did hear her response to Ms. Denaker and despite being right, if the other Ravenclaw wanted to assume it had been done intentionally... Then James wasn't about to clear the air. Let her think it was intentional. It was more amusing that way.

A non-angsty Ravenclaw was refreshing. Which is exactly why he liked this one. Giving her a slight nod as she made her way over, he watched as she made her way to a spot on the bench. He liked the quiet ones.

Too cold to even acknowledge his friends, Jace took a seat by himself upfront, and waited for the others to arrive. “’choo!” Eh...oops?

This one was a dwarf. But a respectful dwarf. A respectful dwarf who preferred to greet people in foreign languages, it seemed. There wasn't really a problem with that. He was sure Nana did it too in her head.

James nodded at the boy, "Nice scarf," hopefully it wasn't on too tight, yeah?

When he told his dad his dilemma of not being able to bring his tea anywhere, he was sent a 'travel mug'. Which was strange since it didn't look like a mug. There was a handle, yes but it wasn't ceramic nor did it have fun designs on it, such as a real mug did. It was silver and black, and probably made out of some metal. Austin wasn't sure. But, it carried his tea just the same, and he was grateful for this muggle thing.

He tried to mumble a pleasant "Good Morning Professor" before he sat on a bench.

Ah, another one who looked like he had just rolled out of bed. James was wondering how many of those he'd get. "Good morning, Austin," he replied the greeting in a strong voice to contrast with the kid's own mumbling. "If you think you'll fall asleep, I suggest jogging in place." Falling asleep would not be tolerated. Fyi.

"Mornin' Prof" The Gryffindor greeted the other man behind a muffled scarf as he took his seat on a bench.

The hiking up of scarves was highly unnecessary in James' opinion, but he decided to refrain from commenting on it. Maybe it was a new trend, though James thought it was nothing but a dramatic display. The muffled greeting was... interesting and the boy received a firm nod in return.

Ah, yellow. They were good in moderation and for now it seemed there weren't an overwhelming amount of them. So this one could stay. He'd allow for it.

Though her lack of a greeting didn't go unnoticed.

Another yellow, joy. They weren't overcapacity yet, were they? He'd have to count. For now, she could stay as well.... He supposed.

Another one who looked like he was on the brink of hibernation. Didn't these kids sleep? 9 am was hardly even early. Seeing as the Slytherin wasn't up for a voiced greeting, James wouldn't return with one either. Simply a nod.

Glancing down at his watch, he waited until the last few seconds ticked by. Right when the small hand hit the nine, he walked over so that he was now directly in front of the benches, leaving the table with empty jars behind. Not waiting another minute--as he wanted them to have as much time as they could for the lesson--he addressed the class as a whole. "Good morning, I hope everyone is wide awake today." Looking at you, Mr. Moore.

"As you can tell, it's slightly chilly out," yes, he said slightly. No need to be dramatic, people. It wasn't snowing, the lake wasn't frozen, and there was a bit of sun peeking through. It could've been worse. And they ought to know to wear layers. However, "If you have a problem with the cold, feel free to cast or ask an older student to help you cast an insulating charm on your clothes. A hot-air charm and jogging in place will also do the trick, so I don't want to hear any complaints."

He paused briefly to allow them to do any of the above. He was curious to see if any would opt for jogging. It was the easiest fix, James' personal favorite. It'd wake them up as well. Work twice the magic without using any magic at all. A good skill to have.

"We're going to start off nice and easy. I expect everyone to participate." Meaning he didn't want anyone trying to take a nap. That wouldn't be happening on his watch. "As you have hopefully noticed by now," he used the world 'hopefully' because there was always one unobservant kid in the bunch. Though surprisingly, they were normally the ones that buried their heads in textbooks all year. "There are many different species local to Hogwarts grounds. I want everyone to think of and name at least one creature you can encounter around these parts."

See? Not hard. It wasn't an answer they needed to look in the textbook for either. James didn't care much for textbooks. This class was all about experience. That's how he fell in love with the subject, anyways. Besides, they had to have exposed to some Hogwarts' creatures before, yes?

As he waited for hands to start shooting up, he pulled the chalkboard closer so that he could begin taking note of answers.

OOC: Eeeee first of all, thank you all so much for joining in! I'm so giddy right now asdf <3

+ Anyways, as Professor Draper just announced this is the OFFICIAL START of the lesson! So we'd advise you not to post any arrivals after this point! Just pretend you've been around the whole time, we won't know the difference ;)

+ We won't move on for at least another 12 hours

Colt saw the Professor nod back at him and didn't expect anything less. At least he didn't call him out for being polite. In all honesty, he wasn't much of a morning person. Being polite was the last thing on his mind. As he was trying to keep himself warm by bouncing on the balls of his feet, he heard the dude ask a question. Hmm seemed pretty vague and easy to him. He liked it! He thought of which creatures would he encounter around these parts. He thought about it and bloody merlin he had to raise his hand in the bloody cold? Dude so not cool.

He got his hands out of his pocket and raised his hand. He would make his answer quick. "You could encounter Thestrals professor. I heard there is a whole herd you are keeping around these parts." Now back to keeping his hands warm. He could cast the warming spell but that required effort.

keepmeclose22 02-17-2016 10:08 PM

Austin's face went red when his tiredness was pointed out. He wasn't going to fall asleep, he had his tea with him. Just because he wanted to be back in his warm dorm, didn't mean he was going to try to sleep here. Beds were better for sleeping. Benches were hard and meant for sitting. He learned, early on he might add, that professors were not happy when you fell asleep in their class. "Don't worry professor, won't happen today." He took a sip of his tea, hoping that would suffice.

After a few other students trickled in, and others were complaining about the cold, the professor started. It's not that cold. He thought. Although he had opted for a longer sleeved shirt and a scarf today. It may not be very cold, but he wasn't going to risk getting sick. He took another sip of his tea as he thought about the creatures he had seen. There was talk of spiders, especially a few years ago, and centaurs had been around then too. Although he had never seen these himself. What he had seen in his time at Hogwarts was the squid that lived in the lake. Well, not so much the squid itself, but a few tentacles had managed to pop out here and there.

The teen raised his hand and waited to be called for before saying anything. He was already on the spot. "Isn't there a squid that lives in the lake?" He gave a nod to the one they were all sitting around. "I've seen it's tentacles from time to time."

One of Dante's favorite professor's right here. Along side Hirsch that is because mind games were fun. It was not that cold so Dante did not care what Draper was talking about at this point. Would the houses fit into the species because ravenclaws were weird just like slytherins and then there were hufflepuffs and gryffindors.

But nah, this was Draper he would not even get a kick out of that. But if he said Flamsteed was the creature. Would the response be different. Who knows he was not going to do it.

"Merpeople. One of the many awesome beings and things underneath the Lake"

Did he have to explain further. Only an idiot would not know about them and trying to their language sounds exhausting.

Azura looked at the Professor as he spoke about how to warm up! Jogging? Yeah she would be lucky to get two steps into that activity before she fell right over! She sound stick with her layers and bundling into her cloak! Thank you!

She was almost tempted to not answer the question! After all, the reason for her sitting in the back was to escape Jace's notice! But this was education! And she was a Ravenclaw! She HAD to answer the question!

So one of her mittened hands went into the air as she answered.

The Giant Squid lives in the lake!" or it supposedly did!

Right?

Hady sent several friends a small smile as they walked past her or sat close by on the bench. A select few may have even gotten a wave or her signature grin if they were paying attention.

At exactly nine the lesson began with Professor Draper moving to stand before them all. When told they could cast a heating charm or get up and jog of keep warm she nearly laughed. No need for none of that right now, thank you. She was more then warm enough even without all the millions of layers some of her fellow mates had on.

"Grindylows sir," the female snakette answered only after raising her hand, hazel eyes flicking towards the lake for a brief second.

DuckyLinJi 02-17-2016 10:40 PM

He was like 99% sure that it was okay to sit next to Norah and because class was going to start soon he decided to sit down. He took out his writing material and looked up again when Katherine sat next to him on the bench. “Hi Katherine” he greeted her with a small smile before he went to search his bag for his quill. The one he had almost crushed while having spoken to this very own professor teaching this class. The feather was still a bit broken… His fault!

Another familiar voice called his name again and this time he looked at Marsha. She got a smile as well as a wave as the younger Gryffindor sat next to the younger Ravenclaw on the bench. Just when he found his quill , Professor Jerkface started the lesson.

He would of course help out any younger students with performing the hot air charm on them if they asked him. His eyes went to Katherine next to him for a second before thinking of an answer to the Jerkface’s question. “Acromantulas” he said after raising his hand in the air. It was the first creature that popped in to his mind.

Ameh 02-17-2016 11:31 PM

At the moment, Jaemin didn't feel rather wide awake... but that was because he liked sleeping when he was sick, and this class was severely interfering with that. However, he liked this class, so he would fight to stay as awake as humanly possible. The sniffly child peered at the professor over his scarf, listening intently as the man asked his question and then as his fellow students started listing off animals they had either seen or knew were around.

The idea of acromantulas made him twitchy, and he wrinkled his nose in the Head Boy's direction. He'd heard about the things that had happened in previous years, of course, but ew giant spiders. No thank you.

"Do they have to be magical creatures?" he murmured, pulling his scarf down to talk and putting a hand up to answer. "Cause there's a huuuuuuge pike in the lake, I think. It bodyslammed the common room window and now it keeps swimming by it every so often."

If not that... he tilted his head thoughtfully.

"Do centaurs count? They're in the forest, right?" But centaurs were weird, cause they were... sorta creatures but not really creatures. They talked and stuff. Had conversations. They were like humans, except not.

RandomRaven 02-17-2016 11:31 PM

Two points from Gryffindor? Alright, no big deal.

And maybe she had to do the jogging in her place. Right.. Gathering her long brunette hair into a ponytail and started doing the jogging on her place. Hop hop hop... How long she had to do this by the way? One minute? Five minutes? The entire class? Well, let's just do it for five minutes and... Done. Thank Goodness that she didn't have asthma.

Now the class had started, Ava went back to her seat and listened to the cold heartless creature man. "There are centaurs living in the forbidden forest." The young lioness said. "Last term it taught them how to be a centaur it it was quiet... interesting. The class, I mean." Cue sarcastic comment.

Goblinfrog 02-18-2016 12:02 AM

Kitty winced as the Professor took away points from Ravenclaw for something that Haddie said. At least it was only three points. She raised her hand as the professor asked what creatures lived in the area. " Thestrals! I never see them but I know they pull the carriages back forth to Hogwarts so they must live on the ground somewhere."

While the others answered his question she pulled her small hand mirror out and examined herself to make certain that her scarf hadn't messed up her Gothic complexion or hair. Her hair was a little messed up, but thankfully the pale make up hadn't been smeared. Satisfied, she snapped the mirror shut and refocused on the lesson.

Jojogali 02-18-2016 01:16 AM

Answer here for the professor!

Elsa watched silently as the professor commenced the lesson. She nodded and took notes when appropriate. Creatures that lived inside Hogwarts' grounds.. that wasn't hard. Mermaids for starters, but another student had already said that. There were Thedestrals as well, though she could not see them. The Giant Squid was also an obvious option, the beast took great pleasure in flauting it's tentacles outside the great lake. She squinted at her notes in concentration, trying to remember a creature that she knew lived on those grounds, but it was hard seeing has herself, being a first year, didn't dare to enter the Forbidden Forest so her knowledge was limited to those listed on Hogwarts a History.

Automatically her hand started doodling on the top of her notes, drawing what was now her favorite animal to draw, a snake. That made her remember something "Professor, I know it doesn't count as local, but I think I read on Hogwarts a History that once a Basilisk habited the castle. Is it true?" she asked, raising her hand before speaking "oh, I also believe Grindylows habit the Great Lake Sir" Yes, that was a proper answer.

PhoenixRising 02-18-2016 01:18 AM

Tia frowned momentarily when two students - Haddie being one and the only one who mattered to her at present - lost points for their tone. Draper was definitely serious, but not that it bothered her. It just meant that he knew his information, most likely and they could actually learn. If they let him teach them.

She did grin when he started off the lesson with some light humor on the weather not being terrible and that there were 'fixes' to the cold. The cold wasn't bothering her as much as some of her classmates because she had worn layers and dressed appropriately without overdoing it either. Not to mention casting a hot-air charm and insulation charm the moment she exited the castle and realized just how cold it was. Amazing what magic could do for you; she would be more than willing do the same for one of her younger classmates if they wanted.

Question time though. Creatures that lived on the grounds. She was about to say acromantulas, but then her counterpart beat her to it. So instead she thought of other creatures that might not have been mentioned; most of peers were going for creatures that lived in the lake, but Draper hadn't specified just the lake even though its where they were located. There were MANY creatures that lived in the forest. "Unicorns, sir. In the Forest, there's been known to be Unicorns that take residence there." Tia said upon raising her hand. Not that she's ever been in the Forest personally to see one, sadly.

The professor was moving from the place where he'd stood at attention since Ariadne got here, so she took that as a sign that he was getting started. She shifted herself around on the bench and face him. Sure enough, she was right. He soon launched into a discussion on the slightly cold weather, which Ariadne pretty much took as an invitation to get up and move around. She could jog in place? Okay, then! SURE!

*jog jog jog jog jog*

Ariadne began jogging in place as she listened to the rest of the discussion. She was one of those over-excited, can't-sit-still first years, and this was really right up her alley. She wasn't even cold. THANKS, PROFESSOR! Still steadily jogging in place and feeling like a hamster at the wheel, Ariadne began thinking of a creature she could find here at Hogwarts. "Merpeople!" she excitedly said, pausing for a split second to raise her hand. Those things were SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS scary!

Noelle's first, second year COMC class since she'd been back. Luckily, she took notice of the board before going to class or she would have gone start to where they usually held it. Instead, Noelle was bundled up and headed down to the lake.

Once down there, she noticed the set up and looked around for a place to sit. She had been sitting towards the middle of classes lately because she wasn't confident enough to sit up at front, and sitting at the back made her feel like she wasn't serious about class. Which she was. It had almost been all she had done since she had come back.

This class was packed though. Noelle took a random seat available and pulled out her parchment and quill. She was ready.

Noelle studied the new professor with curiousity as he started. Snarky little bugger. Noelle approved. She'd come prepared for the cold. No need to be dramatic about it. Okay so animals.

Noelle jotted down the answers other students were given. Then she raised her had while still writing. "I heard nifflers were in the barn." Did that count?

"Morning," she greeted to him too, hoping he wouldn't be intimidated by her because of her badge. "I'm Tia."

Hmmm ... no Unicorns. Yet. Carl however, did see a Ravenclaw taking a seat next to him. "Hello, Tia!" Oooh, she was a badge person. A Head badge person too. "I am Carl." He said with a grin. Then, he turned his attention to Professor Draper as he spoke. No, he did not have a problem with the cold. He was wearing layers along with his winter cloak, so he was quite warm.

He raised his hand and when he was called, answered, "I heard there are Fairies here." Though he had not encountered one before. Were they as cute as they were imagined in the Muggle World?

And Tia mentioned Unicorns. He already liked her a lot.

She cast a curious glance at the jars before turning her attention to the persons that had arrived.

He almost preferred Peppy Prefect over there. ”Watch your tongue, Denaker. That’s three points from Ravenclaw.” Additionally, he did not care at all to figure out what she was referring to. Oh and she was automatically starting at strike two.

Haddie looked her friend up and down as if she was trying to decide if Rachel was being serious or not. She paused long enough to return Kitty's wave, and then returned to scrutinizing her Bestie. "Oh no, no. You know, because it's not important to make sure that all the students you've ordered back to the castle for their safety, can, you know, actually, physically do so. As long as you make the show of it, right?" Holy crud, as much as she loved Rachel, the girl could be way too trusting for her own good. Which was why Rachel went to the Hag's class in the first place.

Oh, and there was the Child Hater himself, warning her off smugly. Oh there was no doubt in her mind he did it purposely. He was too smug about it. Haddie folded her arms over her chest and glared at him. She knew it would only make him smugger, but she couldn't help it. She hated the man with a passion. He set a totally different standard for himself than he did everyone else. It was infuriating.

"Or what?" Haddie asked. "You'll leave me a frozen statue for the Hag to pick off at her leisure? Oh, wait. You did that already." No one ever accused Haddie of being smart. Well, the Sorting Hat did, but the Sorting Hat was, in fact, a magical moron, so...

"Mermaids." Her voice was dripping even more with loathing and snark, even though she was legitimately participating. "Or the Hag in the woods." Well, semi-legitimately.

WhittyBitty 02-18-2016 02:29 AM

As Professor Draper started the lesson, Esme busied herself by rubbing her hands together in order to keep warm. Despite wearing gloves some of the cold was seeping in. Maybe the hot air charm would work wonders but for the moment she would stick it out with what she had. Besides the practical part of the lesson should help since it would require them to get up and move about.

For now she was happy talking about creatures since she were incredibly interested in them.

When they were asked to list a creature that they could find around the school grounds it was no surprise that one in particular occurred to her right off the bat. "Unicorns!" she called out excitedly as soon as her hand was in the air. If they ended up doing another lesson on them, Esme would be REALLY happy.

BanaBatGirl 02-18-2016 03:10 AM

"Speaking of hags...." David piped up, his hand NATURALLY already in the air, "hags are a creature you can encounter around these parts."

He drew a long, sloooooooooooooooooooow look from the back of Haddie's head to the professor's face. "I hear hags can be quite ♥ ♥ ♥ LOVE ♥ ♥ ♥ ly if you look at 'em right."

Just saying. Not a rumor. Just an observation Davie had had. AND WHY DID his first-year enemy ALWAYS HAVE TO STEAL HIS ANSWERS?! CoMC was HIS CLASS. As were all the others, but shh.

lemon 02-18-2016 03:58 AM

Creatures? Oh, there were tons, and Dima could name quite a few. He just.... didn't feel like it. Laziness was a thing, and the sixth year didn't find this question important enough to throw a hand up. He much preferred listening to his fellow classmates and trying not to fall asleep.

Although with more talk about the Hag, that was pretty unlikely.

Watching the professor, he remained silent.

TeafortheSoul 02-18-2016 04:06 AM

omg I missed posting so muuuch

...... wait, ,there was a hag? An actual child-eating hag? Char looked around in confusion, eyes settling on her bestie. Did HE know about the hag? She would totally be asking him about the hag after class. HAD ANYONE BEEN EATEN? DID THEIR PARENTS KNOW THERE WAS A HAG? WHY WAS IT OKAY THAT THERE WAS A HAG????

Also, she stuck her hand up, "Snails!" Yep. They were creatures. He hadn't said MAGICAL so they counted totally! But oh... oh that reminded her of her dead snails and Char sucked her bottom lip in, expression brave.

SHE WOULD NOT CRY ABOUT HER LOST SNABIES (SNAIL BABIES) TODAY!

Cassirin 02-18-2016 04:21 AM

Dot wasn't cold, because she excelled at layering and also because she knew how to cast warming charms. Instead, she leaned against the nearest Dima and admired her fingernails as her classmates listed creatures. They were being repetitive and going for the most obvious examples.

Except for that other Charlotte, who was on about snails again.

"Bowtruckles, sir, and they'll scratch out your eyes if you get too close to their wand trees." And Dot liked her eyes, thanks. They were helpful for seeing.

Daydreamer11 02-18-2016 04:22 AM

Class was beginning and Janelle was ready. At least she thought she was ready. It was cold, but for some reason Janelle felt fine. She didn't need a warming charm.......at least not yet. Anyway, she had more important things to focus on. The first question for instance. Janelle wasn't sure whether the professor meant creatures that were native to the Hogwarts area or any creature that could be found on the grounds. She decided to go with the latter.

Janelle raised her hand and began to speak. "You can find Hippogriffs at Hogwarts." She loved the Hippogriffs. Janelle pretty much loved all of the animals at Hogwarts........except maybe flobberworms. After answering, the Ravenclaw jotted down a few notes based on her classmates' answers.

Steelsheen 02-18-2016 05:44 AM

Well now magic themselves warm. See Tenacius wouldve thought of that had he known how to do that. But warming up magic and clothes? What are the risks that will end up with bonfire from clothes?

So he got up and started B O U N C I N G around, jumping jacks, zumba, silly stupid motions he was making up to the beat of an invisible tune. Somebody said the giant squid "Yeah!..." huff huff "I saw it in the lake when we went under!" What a wonderful way to start off the first day of school.

But all this warm excitable blood rushing to his head suddenly got a thought percolating in the back burner of his brain to suddenly come front and center "Professah... Are there any hogs around Hogwarts? I mean its in the school name and we have them boars by the gate, but I don’t think I've actually ever seen one." huff huff huff "Or do we actually keep them in a pen somewhere and that’s what we cook for dinner?"

Because then technically they have encountered hogs around these parts.

FearlessLeader19 02-18-2016 06:01 AM

From her seat beside Haddie, Rachel crossed her hands over her chest in an attempt to make herself a little warmer and to watch as her peers arrived. "Hello, Janelle.'' Her fellow Ravenclaw received a smile as did Kitty. But then she was looking back at her best friend. "Have it your way, Haddie. Holding grudges will get you no where.'' She paused before saying quietly. "You really ought to have respect for Professor Draper. Whatever happened before is int he past; he still is your Professor.'' Rachel disliked disrespect in any form. It was just plain rude.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The cold wasn't a bother to her now that the lesson was starting. So long as she had something to distract her, she would be fine. She frowned in David's direction. Hags? They were lovely? Had he gone mad? Hags were creepy! With a bewildered look at him, she turned her attention back to Draper with her hand raised. "There are crups in the barnyard.'' She thought back fondly to Spot whom she had once taken out so he could play with him.

Stefan 02-18-2016 08:15 AM

Jace inclined his head toward Professor Draper, saying his muffled thanks as he complimented his scarf. At least the blue and bronze shade suited his skin perfectly, right? Oblivious to more of his friends coming, the Ravenclaw's eyes were on the peaceful lake. He didn't like this cold class one bit. Rubbing his nose with his scarf, Jace sat straighter on the bench, his full attention now on the professor as he started to talk.

Warming spell? No thanks. Still thinking about his misfortune of stunning a Headmistress a few months ago, he thought he'd lay low with the wand work for now. He didn't want to accidentally burn himself, okay? Instead, he hooked the edge of his scarf on his ear, rubbing it vigorously to keep the heat from escaping his ears. A trick he has mastered over the years.

As his classmates started to offer questions, Jace mentally ticked off the creatures in his mind that he memorized, and pretty much just stayed quiet in his seat. Merpeople, Giant Squid, Centaurs, Hags, Bowtruckles, Grindylows...hm. There must be some other creature out there in the Lake that hasn't been mentioned yet. There must be a reason why they are so near the body of water right now...unless the Professor just felt like being a sadist for the day, which was likely. With a gloved hand, Jace raised his arm, and waved it to get the professor's attention. Dwarf Ravenclaw person here, sir! "Flying Seahorses professor! I believe we've got them in our Lake..." his voice trailing off, taking a side glance at the body of water beside them, then to the clear jars before them.

And say what? Boars? Hogs? Jace looked at the Gryffindor amused, and entertained with his...dancing, if you can call it one. Surely, they won't be doing pickled pork today, right? He'd rather go and do Flying Seahorse Fishing than pickle raw meat...just saying.

hermygirl 02-18-2016 09:33 AM

Sam wasn't really cold, since she was used to far worse, but she still tugged on her scarf and re-wrapped it round her neck as she waited for the lesson to start. She was curious about their location, and all of those glass jars. Clearly the Giant Squid wasn't going to fit in any of those containers, but couldn't help but wonder if today would be the day she'd finally get to meet him.

She struggled to think of any different creatures as her classmates started rattling off all the obvious ones. She'd seen the thestrals on her first day, of course, and she'd only just been thinking about the Giant Squid. And then she thought about other places on the grounds, ones she'd actually visited, like the Herbology greenhouses and garden. And then she had her answer.

"Dere's sumtimes garden gnomes in 'erbology, so I 'eard."

Symphora 02-18-2016 09:35 AM

Catching up :)

Henric ought to cast 'melofors' on some of the little ickles heads for disrespecting and complaining about the cold. They should be lucky to have a lesson out here, not many students in the world have these kind of engaging opportunities in their classroom. Why were they complaining? Henric disliked hearing them the most. It was a shame to see his juniors acted in such a way. He sighed, shaking his head. Honestly, he was disappointed. Henric sat at the very back beside llia, observing and listening to their answers before offering his answer of his own, "Professor, Bowtruckles, I heard some of them attacked students recently." Yup, he heard about it. Hope nobody was injured during the attack.

Melbourne was quietly sitting there watching Professor pretty Draper interact with people…and…well, a part of her was nervous about looking silly and Mr. doesn’t-like-her-friend-Haddie was being a giant pile of troll poop. Seriously. Hags were not lovely if you looked at them right.

Raising her hand Melbourne grinned up at the Professor. “There are supposedly Thestrals in the forest,” Melbourne grinned at the Professor. Yep. See. This girl knew her stuff…and she wasn’t totally fluttering her lashes at a man waaaaaaaaaay too old for her. Not at all.

Lady Marmalade 02-18-2016 09:52 AM

. Since they were outside and down by the lake Bella didn't want to take any chances of catching a cold, so she was completely bundled up in a few layers so she could stay nice and warm through class. She was already seated on the bench as Professor Draper started class and asked the first question. She thought for a moment of all of the creatures that could be found on the Hogwarts grounds and wanted to make sure she didn't say the same answer as someone else, which was hard because a lot of good answers had already been said.

"House-elves," she finally blurted out. They were considered creatures that could be found at Hogwarts, but maybe the Professor meant just on the grounds. "Oh well they're inside the castle.... umm... flobberworms."

itsjustjesse 02-18-2016 10:11 AM

Mel grinned over to Isabella when she brought up house elves. That was a good point they were in the castle. Looking around at the other students she raised her hand again before spitting out the name of another creature.

“Professor…seeing as we are rather close to Loch Ness is there a possibility that there are Kelpies in the region?” She asked and glanced over at the lake. Yeah, that would not be fun if one of those were in their lake now would it? It would be kind of deadly dangerous...but the squid would have a beast to play with!

VRSCIKA 02-18-2016 11:18 AM

Was it that cold? Really? She looked at other people around her. Hmm, she supposed so.......maybe she was an ice queen or something..... Oh well, it didn't bother her. Although....she make have scooted toward Henric a little.....that wasn't because it was cold though. Ilia sat quietly and listened to the other students answers, calmly looking at the empty jars. With a small, unmoving smile her hand raised and she waited to be addressed. "Sir, Flitterbies are rather common in the right weather." She loved to watch them dance through the air. She could list more, but it was far more amusing to watch the other students repeat each other and wrack their brains. Ilia would not deny that her snakey streak was quite prominent as she got older.

The first arrival from the blue house, it seemed. The only color they were missing was red.

...And this is exactly why he didn’t get his hopes up.

The permanent smug expression he wore on his face didn’t falter as she grumpily greeted him. However, he did raise his brows ever-so-slightly. Oh and she was automatically starting at strike two.

This little girl was of a complete different variety.

.... No comment.

This one got a nod. He was interesting, James had to give him that much.

He liked the quiet ones.

.... Oh Merlin.

They had a crier already and James hadn't even said anything to her yet. Great. "Good morning," he paused, watching her curiously. If she cried it wasn't his fault... Yet.

Ah, another one who looked like he had just rolled out of bed. James was wondering how many of those he'd get. "Good morning, Austin," he replied the greeting in a strong voice to contrast with the kid's own mumbling. "If you think you'll fall asleep, I suggest jogging in place." Falling asleep would not be tolerated. Fyi.

This one was fast. "Good morning," he watched as she waved to pratically every single kid on the bench. Didn't these kids have any enemies? Were was the fun in being friends with everyone?

The hiking up of scarves was highly unnecessary in James' opinion, but he decided to refrain from commenting on it. Maybe it was a new trend, though James thought it was nothing but a dramatic display. The muffled greeting was... interesting and the boy received a firm nod in return.

Huh, what had he done to make her so happy? "Good morning, Ms. Valke," he nodded. The green house was very impressive today.

Ah, yellow. They were good in moderation and for now it seemed there weren't an overwhelming amount of them. So this one could stay. He'd allow for it.

Though her lack of a greeting didn't go unnoticed.

This one was in a hurry. He had to keep himself from showing any signs of amusement, however, the smug smile stayed in place as always. He gave the little girl a small nod in acknowledgment and watched as she went to sit down.

..... Right.

She got a nod. And a heap of silent judgement.

Another yellow, joy. They weren't overcapacity yet, were they? He'd have to count. For now, she could stay as well.... He supposed.

"Hello and good morning," he nodded firmly.

Miss 500 Miles Per Hour. Not a surprise to see her skipping her way over. He had to brace himself. "It is indeed," he nodded in agreement. Her attitude was appreciated, at least.

Ah another blue. There seemed to be an arsenal of those lately. Hopefully this one would be angst free, yeah? A man could only hope. "Good morning," he nodded. Almost time, yeah?

They were getting down to the last few minutes here and James was already growing impatient. He wanted to get things moving already. "Hugo," he nodded. "Just about ready to start." That's what's up.

Madge was fairly excited to begin learning about magical creatures. but she was at a true disadvantage, not knowing anything about the magical world until about six months prior to this moment. She thought hard about her time spent here. Creatures at Hogwarts? She then thought of the kitchens by the Hufflepuff Common Room entrance, and her hand shot up.

"Well, we have house elves in the kitchens." she offered, she wanted to participate even if she didn't know much beyond her experience in the past few months.

Hera 02-18-2016 12:45 PM

Creatures, from around Hogwarts, this was so easily done... but he didn't want to give a boring answer either, like, some of them were a little cliche, no?

"Kneazles, Sir... the dreaded kneazles." Like, they were everywhere and nowhere and in places where you least expected them to be... like in a library, on chairs where people sat. Nasty things they could be. Gosh. Domestic or not, some were just plain feral... others weren't too bad, but he was more of a canine person if anything.

LestrangeRaven 02-18-2016 01:03 PM

Ouh Great in a sarcastic tone of course

he raised his hand, wait till pointed out and answering it with a lazy but yet sassy as he usually done

"How 'bout paused "a Skrewt sir? i meet up with them in the Wooden Bridge, you know the story sir" he smile not a sincere one but a bitter one, it seem he still hold a grudge over it.. very revengefull kid is he?

"Or how about we try something soft and cherish like.. a house elves maybe??" he shuddering his shoulder and smiled, this time looks like a mockery.. Geez.. looking for trouble eh? please don't

Perhaps the cold and still sleepy as hell made Raven bit more annoying.. he stayed up late because reading Horror's Novel, lend by a friend.. he did wear few layer and tighten up his scarf but yet still feel the cold.. or maybe he's a bit unwell makes him can't stand the cold, he loves gloomy weather like this but the cold makes him so grumpy

did the other kid feel the cold too? but they seem okay with it.. he looks around.. aaand finds most of them are as cold as he is..

"Very good," he nodded, flicking his wand behind him towards the piece of chalk that rested on the ledge of the board. "They pull your carriages every year despite appearing invisible to most." So in other words, yes they have all encountered them before even unknowingly. Aside from the first years, that is. They'd get their time too.

The chalk quickly took note of the answer as James moved on to call on the next student.

James was glad to see this one was still awake. Though it was still early in the lesson. Kid was on his Professor's radar now. "Excellent!" he said, turning to make sure the chalk was still taking note, it was of course.

Did he have to explain further. Only an idiot would not know about them and trying to their language sounds exhausting.

Ah Dante, this one was always something else. James expected interesting answers from this kid, always. However, the answer offered up this time was quite normal. A little boring. But correct, for the most part. "Merpeople in the lake, yes," he nodded as the words were written on the board. For the most part... But there was one thing, "However, be careful with the fine wording there Mr. Barrington," he slightly raised his brows, wondering if the boy had caught on to his own mistake yet.

"Although you may be inclined to label the Merpeople as beings," he was addressing the entire class here, by the way. "They declined the offer for that particular classification. Therefore, they are classified under the 'beast' category along with Centaurs who had also declined the offer." And now they knew.

Right?

Eager she was. Wasn't this the child who had almost cried because of words James didn't even say? Well, thank Merlin that was over. Whatever that was, anyways. He didn't need any more angsty Claws. It seemed that Haddie child already had them covered on that front.

"Yes," he nodded. Her answer was correct. It was also correct when the sleepy boy had said it only a few moments ago. "Pay attention to your classmates' answers," his tone wasn't harsh, just a gentle reminder. Or... As gentle of a reminder as James could get at. The Professor wasn't all that gentle, alright? Only when it came to the creatures. And children were an entirely different category of beasts. Especially Ravenclaws.

No need for none of that right now, thank you. She was more then warm enough even without all the millions of layers some of her fellow mates had on.

"Grindylows sir," the female snakette answered only after raising her hand, hazel eyes flicking towards the lake for a brief second.

Slightly annoyed for some of the students' blatant disregard for repeated answers, James was glad to see Hady's hand in the air. She wouldn't disappoint, he was sure. "Good," he nodded. Glad to see some were paying attention.

Professor Jerkface next looked over to the Head Child. This ought to be interesting. He nodded at the dramatic boy, thoroughly interested to see what he had to offer up. "Gave you lot quite some trouble a few terms back, yeah?" He nodded as the answer was noted on the board.

If not that... he tilted his head thoughtfully.

"Do centaurs count? They're in the forest, right?" But centaurs were weird, cause they were... sorta creatures but not really creatures. They talked and stuff. Had conversations. They were like humans, except not.

James shook his head, "You can name mundane ones as well," he nodded. After all, he hadn't specified. With that being said, both of the answers were good ones and he let the chalk scribble both down. "Both acceptable answers, Mr. Song," though the anecdote wasn't very interesting.

Little Burton was wise to keep her mouth shut after losing points previously. And she was also the first he noticed to stand up and begin jogging. Good. Meant she was done complaining, yeah?

"Yes, much like Mr. Song just informed us," was he being too direct? Did he care? No. They ought to listen to their peers. Maybe learn a few things.

Satisfied, she snapped the mirror shut and refocused on the lesson.

.... Another repeated answer. Merlin, these children were testing his patience already and it was only minute eight. Yes. He nodded. 'Thestrals' were still a correct answer. Hadn't changed since the first time it was said.

"We do not pamper ourselves in the middle of class, Miss Valentine," yes he had seen that. He was standing right there in front of them after all. He wasn't blind. "Save that for after the lesson," he warned her firmly. She could touch up her facepaint when they were released.

Is it true?" she asked, raising her hand before speaking "oh, I also believe Grindylows habit the Great Lake Sir" Yes, that was a proper answer.

Avid note-takers, they were appreciated for the most part. He gave her an amused look as she spoke up to answer. Basilsk, that was a new one. "There was one in the castle at one point in time, but we no longer have one residing here." Murder was a heavy subject to discuss with so many tiny dwarf-children around. "You may, however, find snakes deep in the forrest." Eh, at least she had tried?

More than he could say for some of them. And for that reason, he'd let her second answer slide. Another repeat. Maybe they should end the lesson here and turn it into one on respect? Merlin knew they needed it.

There were MANY creatures that lived in the forest. "Unicorns, sir. In the Forest, there's been known to be Unicorns that take residence there." Tia said upon raising her hand. Not that she's ever been in the Forest personally to see one, sadly.

The Head Girl, James expected great things. Mostly because her counterpart would always fall short of expectations and she'd have to pull the weight. But also because she hadn't done anything to make him expect otherwise.... Yet. There was always a yet with these kids.

As for her answer, James appreciated the variety she offered with hers. "Unicorns, yes," he nodded in confirmation. "Native to many forests in Europe, including our own."

Another jogger, it seemed. And another answer repeater as well. James was growing very annoyed, very quickly. He simply gave the girl a nod. Before moving on to the next student.

Noelle jotted down the answers other students were given. Then she raised her had while still writing. "I heard nifflers were in the barn." Did that count?

"You heard correctly," he nodded. He had heard about this one. She had quite the eventful term, hadn't she? "Welcome back," and that's as warm as he'd get. Though he did genuinely hope she was readjusting well. And that she had learned her lesson. Utter stupidity it took to get kidnapped in Knockturn Alley, there wasn't much sympathy there.

Again with the hearing. Where were the kids hearing these things and why didn't they just go take a look for themselves? He nodded, "There are a few domesticated ones in our barn." Belonging to students from a lesson a few terms back. At least that's what his records read.

Her excitement was noted and so was the answer: Previously. He gave her a short nod before turning his attention to the next student. James had decided that these kids had zero attention span.

James just about had it with this particular child. "Another three points, Denaker," clearly points meant nothing to her at this point, but her other classmates would give her a hard time about it. He was sure. If he remembered one thing from his Hogwarts years it was that most students did care. "You have said quite enough. We can discuss the rest after class," he was not happy. James gave him a tight-lipped-smile. A smile that translated anything but happy. Kid thought he was oh-so-funny now, didn't he?

A tight-lipped smile and nothing else. Because as a Professor it'd be hardly frowned upon to reply with sarcasm. His permanent smug look twitched slightly, and after a small pause he continued, "Interesting observation."

That's all.

"... Correct," technically, yes. But it was a strange answer. And why she was so enthusiastic about it was beyond him. But he was done trying to understand the mind of a 13 year-old child. Best left alone. He moved his wand so that the chalk scribbled her answer down on the board as well.

"Excellent, Miss Wojack, he said as the chalk took note. "And they are indeed very protective of their trees." Now if the others could pay attention here. Maybe they would get more original answers such as Dot's. Yes, the badge was a good fit for this one. Not an easy feat, by the way.

"Hippogriffs," he nodded as her answer was written on the board. "Very good," among other creatures found in the barn. They had quite a few of them.

"Good," he nodded. "Though we don't have any wild crups in the forrest, the creatures in the barn do live here all the same." He hadn't specified after all, so it was an acceptable answer. The chalk scribbled it down in confirmation.

Still more hands were being raised, it felt like there were millions of them. "Hold on to this one," he gave the boy a quick wink and a smaaaaall hint of a smile before moving on. And oh yes, the board did take note of his answer as well. It was an important one.

James owed her points for getting creative, yes. So he nodded, encouraging her answer. "Sometimes to Professor Myer's dismay, yes, they can infest the gardens," he flicked his wand, letting the chalk take note of this answer. "Though they aren't normally permanent residents here." So it wasn't completely right. But it was plausible. And creative. And not repetition. So good.

He expected more from a Prefect. This one fell into the same category as the Head Child over there. James gave him a disappointed look, "Yes, but I suggest you listen to your fellow Prefects when they offer up answers." Prefects. The whole lot of them thought they were better than everyone else. Must be why this one chose not to listen to any other answers.

Repeated answers would end this lesson much sooner than expected if this continued. He had no patience for it.

"Excellent," he nodded. "They are domestic creatures and categorized as beings, however, yet they do reside her." So he flicked his wand over at the chalk again.

“Professor…seeing as we are rather close to Loch Ness is there a possibility that there are Kelpies in the region?” She asked and glanced over at the lake. Yeah, that would not be fun if one of those were in their lake now would it? It would be kind of deadly dangerous...but the squid would have a beast to play with!

... And it seemed this one wasn't done yet.

Sometimes James had half the mind to think these children just liked hearing the sound of their own voice. "Not at Hogwarts, no." And seeing as that was the question posed, they weren't going to deviate and talk about other possibilities.

She could list more, but it was far more amusing to watch the other students repeat each other and wrack their brains. Ilia would not deny that her snakey streak was quite prominent as she got older.

He liked this one. Though she seemed to have some affinity for that daft Prefect. "Very common in the warmer months," he nodded.

Yes, James remembered this one very well. Which is why he waited to call on the boy last. Hopefully he had something constructive to add. A hope which he was sure would only be that. "Skrewts, yes, you know all too well," he nodded adding the answer to their running list. However the last bit about the elves, he wouldn't comment. They were already mentioned. TWICE.

Moving to the side, James gave everyone a second to look over the list they come up with for the chalkboard.

"As you can see, we have quite a lot of creatures living along side us at Hogwarts," and if they couldn't see then they ought to invest in glasses. An easy fix, really. Or they could move up closer to the front. James didn't bite most of the time. "We also have many different habitat possibilities." As he had so kindly organized for them. "Fine." Haddie said sourly. She was about to say more when she caught the look from Rachel out of the corner of her eye. She closed her mouth. "Whatever."

What characteristics did the creatures that live in the lake need? Gee, let us think. "Gills... the ability to breathe underwater." There, she's participated, without snark. Was everyone happy? Why Hogwarts hire teachers that didn't even like children in the first place, Haddie would never know.

FearlessLeader19 02-18-2016 04:40 PM

Rachel watched with interest as the chalk wrote down their answers into categories. What was the spell that bewitched it to do this? She needed to find out and decided she would ask Professor Primeaux sometime soon. For now, she returned her attention back to Professor Draper as he made mention of the creature they would be studying.

The Eagle raised her hand. "They need to have a clean source of water since this is where they get their oxygen and swim around in. A dirty lake would hamper these and could harm the creatures.'' The poor creatures. This was why no one should throw harmful materials into the Lake or any body of water where they lived.

RandomRaven 02-18-2016 04:41 PM

XD Ameh and I were posting at the same time but IDK what the IC reason is

What the.......

She didn't MEAN to repeat that Slytherin boy. Perhaps he was talking in low voice so she couldn't hear it? That man reminded her of her old muggle school teacher. So grumpy. How could this man be a teacher for teen-age students? Because it seemed like he didn't like teenagers.

Whatever.

And now they're gonna talk about the flying seahorse. Hmmm....

Ava tried to participate again by answering this d-bag professor. "I think they all have fins to help them swim." She spoke loudly as she raised her hand so NOBODY could repeat her answer. Listen to that, Drape?

Elsa was satisfied-ish with the acceptance of her answer. She would have to do better now. She took her time thinking her answer through, she even drew a Flying Seahorse, or what she hoped one looked like, and did a diagram of the characteristics she knew this animal had.

After having everything organized in her head she raised her hand, leaning forward in her bench with anticipation "Flying Seahorses are capable of flying when provoked, I suppose that means they're hybrid creatures, able to breath in the water as well as outside of it" she declared. That seemed like an obvious characteristic to her, so she continued "which also means their gills have to work as wings outside the water. Being able to fly distinguish them from other sorts of Seahorses since for that they had to develop vertebral columns to provide strength to pull theirs bodies from the water and fly" yep, most fishes' spines were soft and bendable. That was a proper answer. She knew her love for animals would pay-off sometime.

MunchyBubbles 02-18-2016 04:55 PM

I'm so dumb! I didn't even see Austins answer! Sorry!

Azura shrank back ever so slightly as the professor responded to her. She had been so distracted with her thoughts that she hadn't even noticed Austin had said the exact same thing..

Minus ten points for Azura!!

She listened carefully and made sure no one was going to say what she was going to!

Again her hand went into the air, slower this time because well.. Embarrassed Ravenclaw Party of one.,

But she spoke up!

"They are all fresh water creatures aren't they? So they need fresh water and not salt water to survive."

Please oh please let no one have said that!

Kolyander 02-18-2016 05:02 PM

Her answer hadn't gotten more then a one word reply but that didn't mean much to the fifth year. She had given an answer and a decent one which was correct so that's all she currently cared about. As the lesson slowly progressed Hady's gaze shifted to the board where the creatures they had all listed soon appeared along with where they were located. Easy enough to understand.

And so it seemed they would be talking about Flying Seahorses. Well okay then. As some answers were already being given she once more raised her hand, "Most of them would be classified as 'Beasts'." Or well at least three out of the five would be that she knew of for sure.

keepmeclose22 02-18-2016 05:22 PM

Austin, who was really more focused on his tea than anything else, waited a few minutes before responding. He had seen a few of the seahorses from time to time, but he never got close to them. They could swim and fly, but those you could get from their name. If he was going to answer, he needed to come up with something else.

The teen took another sip of his tea as he thought. He remembered reading about something in his potions books. They were actually used as ingredients, although the manner in which their preserved was beyond him. He was always given them, or bought them in Diagon Alley. He never needed to go and get them himself.

After a few minutes he raised his hand. "They're actually used in potion making. Commonly known for the potion that gives you endurance." He wasn't going to say Girding Potion, although that was the proper name for it. It was probable that most people didn't know it by the name. He looked down at the warm cup in his hands, hoping to hide the fact that he read potions books in his free time.

Stefan 02-18-2016 05:47 PM

Hold on to what? Jace blinked several times when the professor winked at him...and gave him the faintest grin he could muster. The poor Ravenclaw has no idea what to make of it. One moment he's scary...the next minute he's being appreciative? It was safe to say that Jace was clueless, and he thought it wise not to make sense of it.

...

Oh...oh, so deduction was right! There ought to be an explanation why they are out near the Lake, freezing their buttocks off. However...will they actually go and fish? And...and...and does this mean that they will be harvesting the flying seahorses for their Potions class? Lol, Potions though. If the subject isn't mandatory, he'd rather not take it after being poisoned. But even if he was given the chance not to take it, his mother will freak out.

Anyway, back to the lesson. Jace did shrink back in his scarf like an awkward turtle as his answer was acknowledged, and then tried to think of a common behaviour amongst Lake dwellers. Again, he raised his gloved hand and offered his answer, "I think most of them are harmless whenever they are in their element, as well as co-existing with their fellow water creatures. They become restless by activating their defense mechanism when someone or something intrudes their habitat, making them dangerous creatures if provoked..." he trailed off, his eyes casting a wary glance at the too still Lake surface. Jace has a hunch that that peace will soon be disturbed.

ArianaBlack 02-18-2016 05:48 PM

A clarification post

"Glad to see some of you are already thinking ahead," he nodded in response to the answers already offered. "For the moment, let's talk about lake-dwelling creatures in general." As some of them already had. "And after we get more ideas flowing, we can move into today's subject."

OOC: Sorry for not making this as clear before! For this second question, we're just taking about lake creatures in general to help for brainstorming purposes for the next question!

If you've already posted about the seahorses, no worries! That was totally my fault. Sorry again for the confusion!

WhittyBitty 02-18-2016 05:58 PM

Well, if Professor Draper wanted to be his usual grumpy pants self that wasn't Esme's problem. So far he hadn't said anything to HER but he had reminded someone else not to repeat answers. Was it so bad that some people - like her - mentioned something said by another classmate? People got enthusiastic about creatures that they liked.

The topic changed its focus to lake dwelling creatures and she had quite a bit to say on the matter but it seemed that some of her classmates had jumped to it before she could. Since it seemed that no one could think along the same lines as any of their classmates maybe she should stay silent on the matter.

However... something DID come to her mind. She raised her hand anyway. "I think that a lot of them live in communities among themselves. I know that the merpeople have underground cities or something..."

VRSCIKA 02-18-2016 06:03 PM

So today was going to be about lake creatures. Flying Seahorses particularly? Hmm, maybe this would be interesting. She listened closely to the gr- professors question. Easy enough. " Flying Seahorses are generally a golden yellow in color with solid black eyes. The males tend to be slightly larger than the females because, like their Mundane counterparts, the males carry the offspring. They are gregarious and take different mates every breeding season. The integrity of the plant life in their habitat is essential to their survival as it is with all members of the seahorse family. The plants are nearly as important to their survival as the water itself. " She probably could have given him an essay right then and there but she'd leave things for other students to mention so that perhaps they didn't get scolded for repetition.

Hey Ju 02-18-2016 06:04 PM

Yeah, Matt was excited about animals and this kind of stuff, sort of, HOWEVER, this lake talk didn't please him at all. Yeeeah, no.

He just hoped they wouldn't ave to go INTO the lake. Sailing through it on his first evening ever at Hogwarts had been enough, thaaaanks.

Anyway. "They are horrible, EVIL creatures. Mostly." The Gryffindor added the 'mostly' because he knew generalising THAT much was no good, BUT yeah, no. Water creatures, no. Nooooo. No.

No.

ChanceCoeur 02-18-2016 06:54 PM

Noelle could see the strain on the professors face. She could almost tell what he was thinking because she had heard whispers about it already.she would keep her head down low though because she had learned her mouth would get her in trouble if she said what she was thinking.

Instead, more notes were being taken. Noelle steadily wrote down the animals that people were name. Some she knew and some she didn't. The giant squid, merpeople, yes she had heard all of them. But there were some that weren't familiar with her.

As for herself, Noelle tried thinking about lake animals but as soon as she had thought of one, others were blurting it out. Her head stayed down and watched her parchment then. She wondered where this lesson was going, because she surely wasn't one who wanted to go diving to see animals if that was the case.

RachieRu 02-18-2016 06:57 PM

Hmm. Features that lake-dwelling creatures shared. Gracie knew that. She remained quiet for a few moments though, allowing her fellow peers to answer before finally raised her hand. "The creatures would need adapted eyesight" She murmured with a smile. "They would need the ability to see under the water, which is most likely going to be a dark and murky environment, much harder to see in than what we have to see in. So....yes. Adapted eyesight" So they could see where they were swimming. It made sense really. Smiling, she put her hand down, and returned to making notes on what the other students said as their answers.

MysteriesOfFate 02-18-2016 07:02 PM

Madge raised her hand, a bit shaky. "I suppose they'd have to very much like eating other fish and lake creatures... or underwater plants. Madge smiled to herself, a little joke, but true nonetheless.

Expecto-Penguin 02-18-2016 07:24 PM

Colt was impressed by that his answer was right. I mean he didn't think about lake creatures like some of his other students mentioned but I guess the professor was looking for something more broad. Kudos to him anyways. Now onto the next question, what did lake dwelling creatures have in common? Well the gills answer was obvious. Any firstie could give you that answer. He thought about something deep. He heard a seventh year give the answer about merepeople living in packs. I guess they need that to survive.

He raised his hand and said, "Professor I think their diet? I mean they could eat the seaweed and I guess other fish if you are into cannibalism..." I mean they could eat their own kind. I mean sharks do it.

Oh ok! Elsa thought. Her answer still applied for some of them, at least the hybrid part. She heard her classmates' answers with attention, writing down now and then the Professor remarks and some valid points.

She looked at Azura as she spoke, her hand high in the winter sky "As Azura said, we can establish that all creatures living in the lake rely on fresh water to survive. So most of them feed on living-particles, plants or smaller animals found in this same ecosystem. You know, circle of life and all.." she nodded as she spoke now "Which takes me to my point."

She cleared her throat before continuing. Yep she had no problem speaking in front of others "Seeing as a Lake is an extension of still-water, every animal in it's ecosystem has a fundamental place in its' chain of food and renewal. So, iif we took one specie out of the equation, let's say the Flying Seahorses, we would probably end up killing the Lake.". There. That was the main denominator between all species, no matter how different they were they were all deeply connected and played an important part in keeping the lake alive.

"That said, a characteristic common to all of the habitants of the lake is the lake itself." she hoped she made her point clear.

TeafortheSoul 02-18-2016 08:24 PM

Hmmmmm. Forgetting Hags and snails for a moment, Charlotte tipped her head to one side thoughtfully, getting wrapped up in the question. She let other answers wash over her (only half listening) for a moment before putting her hand up.

"They've adjusted to the um.... pH levels in the lake water. And different water might have different pH levels and be more acid or more alka... alkaline, so if you moved them into different water, or did something to change this lake, it could really harm them."

Goblinfrog 02-18-2016 09:07 PM

Kitty snapped her mirror shut in embarrassment as the Professor called her out. Thankfully her make up was pale and so her embarrassment did not show. No one saw that. Now on with the lesson.

"I don't agree about creatures in the water all being evil. The mermaids aren't evil!" She was objecting to what one of the other students had said, though who she did not know because they were sitting on different benches. But the professor had asked what they had in common, not what they didn't, so Kitty was forced to come up with something that had already been said and that was slightly obvious. "Most of them have gills for breathing underwater."

hermygirl 02-18-2016 09:22 PM

Sam gave a small smile at the Professor at his response to her answer. And he hadn't asked for permanent residents. She'd read enough to know that plenty of creatures migrated from season to season, so wouldn't necessarily expect them to be resident at Hogwarts all year round.

Anyways, next question. What adaptations would an aquatic animal need? Again, the obvious choices had gone, and there was really no point to repeating things. But despite Sam not entirely knowing what a pH was, Charlotte's answer had given her some inspiration.

"'ow 'bout the temperature, Sir?" she replied, raising her hand. "The creatures 'av to survive even when it freezes 'ard on the top, 'nd it's coldeh down deep too."

DuckyLinJi 02-18-2016 09:43 PM

Yoongi nodded his head at the professor as he answered his answer. The Acromantulas had caused a lot of trouble a few years ago. "They did, but the members of the rescue team and i got the people out of the forest safely. " noticed how he had said 'i' professor? Huuuh? He wasn't some delicate scared Head Child. He was a HERO ha! And he was subtly going to make sure Jerkface knew that side of him.

Anyways, on to the next question. Underwater creatures. What did he know about underwater creatures? Well, he knew they lived underwater...but he had the feeling that if he said that, professor Jerkface would be even more than unimpressed with him. And he needed to impress, he was a STAR! He had absolutely no idea what they all meant with PH levels and whatnot though. But he looked like he knew and nodded occasionally. He did agree with was Kitty. Not all creatures are evil. We make them evil.

Pretending that everything he had wanted to say had already been said and that he didn't want to give the same answer twice, the Gryffindor opened his notebook and began to write in it.

LestrangeRaven 02-18-2016 11:08 PM

Okay, does professor Draper in a good mood? He repeat other kids answer in purpose but yet he is off the hook.. meh..

Well.. this time he need to answer it right.. he should hold himself now.. lets see.. underwater creature.. hmmh.. they live in water for sure,no need to tell that

okay, lets just hope he answer it right, "they live in pack, eating algae " he's adding "or they will substitute their food with fish if they find difficult to find algae"

Meh.. lets see what Professor Draper thought of this.. he did try his best to think of it

pundantic 02-18-2016 11:26 PM

Chloe, in all of her infinite thirteen year old wisdom, thought this question was really, super vague. Every student was taking it a different way and the conversation had splintered off into several other conversations and Chloe was lost. Not stupid, just lost. The professor cast her net to wide with this question.

And she was going to sit there and listen for a while. Until she figured it out. And judge, as Chloe's were want to do.

oh its Erik ok 02-19-2016 12:05 AM

Hey if they were capable of declining a label then more power to them. Though if they wanted to be labeled as a beast. Well Dante guessed he was okay with that if they were. Flying Seahorses, was Draper serious. This sounded more like something he would sarcastically say was real to mess with a first year. Not that he would do something like that.

The only thing Dante had that maybe was not said yet. Who knows he was not listening to every boring answer. That was Draper's job. That some creatures appear in the windows of the slytherin common and we get a good view of them. Like the giant squid for example. But nah that was not a good enough answer.

So Dante was just going to stare and grin at Draper. Yep that sounded more fun.

itsjustjesse 02-19-2016 12:08 AM

Melbourne looked around at all of the students and listened to what they were all saying. Raising her hand she hoped no one said her topic as she tried to answer the question about the creatures in the lake. “The creatures in the lake all have capabilities of dealing with the stratification of the lake’s water,” she answered.

“considering that lochs in the region tend to be oligotrophic we could probably assume that the lake is highly oxygenated” she paused for a moment before adding in “and may have a hypolimnion type of stratification…which is probably why the lakes waters tend to be on the cooler side” she chewed her lip slightly and hoped that well, her answer wasn’t looked at badly that is.

Ariadne's jogging came to an abrupt halt, and she looked at the professor and just blinked. Had she said something wrong? All he did was nod at her, and he seemed annoyed. Ariadne was always such a sweet-spirited girl, and she had no idea why anybody would be annoyed with her. She decided to stop jogging then, since she was just doing it for fun anyway, and took a seat.

Apparently her answer was correct, because it was up on the board with a list of other creatures. So at least she'd gotten something right, although, she still couldn't understand what she'd done to get the professor in such a mood. But anyway...characteristics of water-dwelling creatures. People were already sprouting off answers left and right. Gills? Had that been said? Water temperature? "What about survival?" she finally suggested, raising her hand. "Lots of water-dwelling creatures are hunted by either bigger creatures or humans like us. They have to figure out how to use their own bodies and their environment to survive."

Please tell her nobody had suggested that yet, and if they had, please tell her the professor was not going to eat her.

A look? A thin-lipped look of recognition was all Davie was going to get this lesson? At least Haddie was losing them points... no, actually, that was NOT a good thing. Davie did take his bright eyes off the professor for a moment, so that he could have an ESPN thing with Char (he'd been reading Moxley's book about Muggles, see), and then he refocused on the professor. No need to worry about the hag anymore, the ESPN thing had said. Mostly. A Hufflepuff almost got eaten, but we'll chat later. (They had to talk about her snabies, too.) ANYWAAAY....

"Well any creature's most basic needs are those generally shared with humans: the needs for sustenance, shelter, and, arguably, reproductivity. I would be interested in learning more about the latter, sir, particularly in flying seahorses?"

Only David could pull of the innocent form of inquiry inherent in that question, although his cheeks were certainly a bit rosy as he asked it. Loudly. From the back of the group.

Ameh 02-19-2016 02:18 AM

Some of the people were talking about things that sounded super technical. Jaemin considered himself to be smart and everything, but holy Merlin, he didn't understand some of the stuff being said. He knew about pH and all of that, because it was the same concept with plants and soil - they needed certain conditions to survive, which animals also definitely did. But he had no idea what one girl was saying anymore, and he couldn't be sure if it was because he didn't know anything about it, or if it was because he was sick and just not understanding.

"A lot of the creatures in the lake have scales in some form," he murmured, looking around at everyone else. He didn't really know what else he could add now.

Cassirin 02-19-2016 04:10 AM

Lake creatures weren't as exciting as non-lake creatures. Or... exciting wasn't the problem. Cleanliness was the problem. The lake was dark and cold and muddy, and Dot wasn't dressed for it at all. Sure, she'd been swimming in it, but only on bright days where she could see her feet squelching in the mud and identify grindylows from 100 yards out.

Hopefully, they were NOT going in.

"They can swim, sir." Dot flashed a brief smile at the professor. No one had said that, right? "Or, that's to say, mobility in water is part of their physical make up."

StarShine 02-19-2016 06:47 AM

Casually catching up sorry (also mentions of Haddie)

Text Cut: Before the professor
1. Yoongi said it was okay for her to sit with him! She smiiiiiiled at the boy. See that, everyone? Katherine Moss was a cool kid: she got to sit with Mr. Head Boy.
2. Her BEST friend came!!!! She giggled at her and gave her a thumbs-up with her black leather gloved hands. Ellery was rockin' this winter clothing.
3. Another Gryffindor girl came to sit with them - Marsha. Katherine opened her mouth to greet her and say that she could of course sit with them, but just at that moment the professor decided to deduct T H R E E points from the STUPID girl, so she was distracted. She let out a snark as she glared at her. If she cost them the House Cup, Katherine WOULD hex her permanently, she swore on her Ravenclaw pride!

Anyway. She took a deeeeeeeeep breath and focused on the lesson. Creatures that lived in Hogwarts...

Katherine didn't answer right away, because she wanted to find a unique answer. Everyone would mention the 'cool' stuff such as the thestrals, unicorns, merpeople... who shouldn't be classified as creatures in her opinion, in the daily language (science, however, every living thing was a creature). She thoooooooought... aha! One that no one mentioned!

She raised her hand. She was excited for her answer, could the professor tell? "Boggarts, sir!" she said clearly. Sure, they weren't sure that one lived, but there must be. They liked the darkness and Hogwarts had quite a lot of dark corners, no?

........actually, if Haddie kept it up, she was getting that permanent spell BEFORE the end of the term. Katherine made a sound that OBVIOUSLY showed she was DISPLEASED with the girl. What was her problem!? Did she even think they would applaud her because she could be witty with a professor!? With a PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!!!?????? Look up to her? To be honest, if SHE had been in charge during the Hag's lesson, she would have left the girl forever in that frozen state.

Soon. SOON, Haddie Denaker was going down. Katherine wasn't going to let her lose all the points she was earning with such hard work.

Breeeeeeeathe...

At the second question, she listened to others first again to come up with a unique answer. Everyone mentioned the state of the lake... someone said pH...

Ohhhhhh!

"The amount of salt, sir," she said as her hand was in the air, "what I remember from the muggle biology textbook," of course she remembered all, but shhh, "the fish living in sea have a special kidney system to return the water, and their gills excrete excess salt. It's the vice-versa for freshwater fish - the gills take in extra salt and the kidneys produce dilute urine. Now, if I remember correctly, the lake becomes more... saline, have more salt, if they have no natural outlet, or if the water evaporates quickly. Water doesn't evaporate quickly here," obviously, "but I don't know if our lake has a outlet to the open sea or another river, so I don't know if the fish here are considered saltwater or freshwater." There was no information on Hogwarts, a History... which was rather disappointing for such a book as that, which she thought contained everything. She would write to the editor. Books contained answers to every possible problem on Earth, after all.

What characteristics did the creatures that live in the lake need? Gee, let us think. "Gills... the ability to breathe underwater." There, she's participated, without snark. Was everyone happy? Why Hogwarts hire teachers that didn't even like children in the first place, Haddie would never know.

She was objecting to what one of the other students had said, though who she did not know because they were sitting on different benches. But the professor had asked what they had in common, not what they didn't, so Kitty was forced to come up with something that had already been said and that was slightly obvious. "Most of them have gills for breathing underwater."

”Correct,” he nodded. ”All of the underwater creatures will have some way of breathing. As that was a very necessary thing for survival. Not all in the same way, however, it was a common tie drawn between all of the creatures. He gave them each a solid nod, even the trouble maker who seemed to simmer down for the moment being. But then again, who knew how long that’d last. James bet another five minutes. If they were fortunate.

I mean sharks do it.

okay, lets just hope he answer it right, "they live in pack, eating algae " he's adding "or they will substitute their food with fish if they find difficult to find algae"

Meh.. lets see what Professor Draper thought of this.. he did try his best to think of it

Food. Another essential means for survival. ”Yes, food is an essential part of their survival,” he nodded. Maybe all they needed were a few early questions to warm up. This round was going much more smoothly. ”Seeing as we’re covering our lake in particular, their food can come from things such as plants, minerals, and yes even other creatures.” He gave a firm nod to Colt, who had seemed unsure of that last one. However, he got it right on target.

"They've adjusted to the um.... pH levels in the lake water. And different water might have different pH levels and be more acid or more alka... alkaline, so if you moved them into different water, or did something to change this lake, it could really harm them."

Anyways, next question. What adaptations would an aquatic animal need? Again, the obvious choices had gone, and there was really no point to repeating things. But despite Sam not entirely knowing what a pH was, Charlotte's answer had given her some inspiration.

Conditions of the water, an ”Excellent,” answer. Took some more in-depth thought and further application. He appreciated that. ”Fresh water conditions,” he nodded at the Ravenclaw, ”specific pH levels and temperatures, salt content” he gave another nod of acknowledgment to Charlotte, Sam, and Katherine, the smaller students were dominating here it seemed. ”And clean, nontoxic conditions,” he gave the younger girl a small smile. ”All important. Our lake has a series of specific conditions that fit the needs of the creatures that live within it. If the balance of these conditions is off, then we’d have a problem.”

"They would need the ability to see under the water, which is most likely going to be a dark and murky environment, much harder to see in than what we have to see in. So....yes. Physical qualities. As for herself, Noelle tried thinking about lake animals but as soon as she had thought of one, others were blurting it out. Her head stayed down and watched her parchment then. The only thing Dante had that maybe was not said yet. Who knows he was not listening to every boring answer. That was Draper's job. That some creatures appear in the windows of the slytherin common and we get a good view of them. Like the giant squid for example. But nah that was not a good enough answer.

James looked over at Hady expectantly. She had set the bar high for herself, and again she didn’t disappoint. Good. ”Excellent observation,” he nodded. ”Though it may not be true in other bodies of water, at Hogwarts most of our lake-dwellers will not have higher classifications than ‘beast’.” He nodded, turning to Jace. ”Which solidifies your point. They tend not to be incredibly threatening, and have found ways to live in peace with other creatures of the lake.” He nodded after what Esme offered as well. And then there were the answers that just didn’t quite fit together as well as the others did. Not to say that they weren’t correct, just unique and different parts of the puzzle. ”You bring up a good point about the plants,” he nodded. Maybe James ought to drag Poncho Paul over for a joint lesson sometime? Though, that’d mean he’d have to tolerate the man for more than twenty minutes. So… Maybe not. Not soon anyways. ”Plant life does play an incredibly important part for the creatures underwater, and even for those that live on the ground as well. Not only do they help with diet, but also often provide shelter, protection, and camouflage.” There were more reasons, but this was creature class. He’d leave that to the Herbology hippy.

”Excellent and very well thought out,” this was high praise coming from this man by the way. ”Take three points!” There were first times for everything after all.

Again. What was this boy trying to imply here, HM?

James eyed him. For a good bit before responding, ”I’m afraid we won’t have time to go into the specifics of their reproduction. That may be a better discussion for office hours.” Or to have with his parents.

Backpack Boy Wonder, ladies and gentlemen. Never disappointed. Actually no, he always disappointed.

And they were in the home stretch. Well, almost. "Alright, I know that was a mouth-full, but there's only one last question before we get into the bulk of the lesson with an activity." They were almost there. No one was falling asleep yet, yes? Speaking of which, he glanced over to look at the one Ravenclaw boy, who had brought up a good point about the seahorses earlier.

"As I briefly mentioned before, our focus for today is the Flying Seahorse. Taking Mr. Moore's lead, I want everyone to brainstorm a list of things we know about them." He paused, letting them all process this next task. "If you can't think of a fact off the top of your head, try thinking back to the answers we discussed for the previous question. They can help get you on the right track, seeing as Flying Seahorses are very plentiful inhabitants of our lake." Did they see why the last question was relevant now?

Everything was coming full circle. He had a method, okay?

OOC: This is the last question before the mini-activity! So hang on tight, we're almost there!

+ Please only mention ONE fact in your post, so as to leave some for others. Feel free to get creative! Class will be moving on in at least 12 hours from this post.

Carl was sitting silently, listening to his peers speak. He found out that he knew surprisingly little about creatures in the Lake, so had nothing much to say. He had thought of jotting down notes, but decided against it as he found taking both hands out of his warm pockets an immensely difficult action.

The First Year thought about the next question. Again, he had heard about Flying Seahorses, but had never actually seen one. He remembered something about them and raised his hand. "Flying Seahorses can fly when they are provoked." He wanted that ability, so that he could rise into the air if people annoyed him. Though to be honest, he was rarely annoyed.

Yay!! There! She had gotten an answer right! And she didn't repeat anyone!

Ten points to Azura! She smiled happily to herself as she pulled her cloak in tighter around her. It was still cold!

This had been an up and down class so far, but at least she was able to sort of turn it around.. For herself at least! Let's hope she was able to keep it that way!

She thought a bit about the Professor's next question before raising her hand and speaking. "They are golden yellow in color with black eyes." That was about all she knew about them, other then the fact they flew.. But that answer had already been given!

She was paying attention this time!!

Note-taking was happening furiously now as always it always happened during the Q&A part of the lessons, it's just Deniz that forgets to mention it. Katherine's quill (which she had bought with Yoongi, did the boy notice?) was flyiiiiiiiiing on the parchment. She wrote without thinking again, so the parchment looked a little messy, but it was systematical to her and she'd re-write them in the evening while studying anyway.

Sooooooo, this time, as there was little information that could be given about them, she raised her hand as soon as she finished writing.

"They are native to Scotland."

Wasn't she a GREAT student? She didn't look at the textbook even ONCE!

Melbourne wasn’t a fool really, she had just gone the extra kilometer to give an answer that others hadn’t given. Still, now they were moving onto just facts about the flying sea horses. Of course someone was going to say they could fly.

That was evident.

Raising her hand she quickly added, “they are an ingredient used in the girding potion – though they are best when freshly caught,” she grinned and looked around at everyone in the room…really, it would be a wonder if anyone else didn’t lose points with how the class seemed to be going.

As the discussion went on, Jace became convinced that the activity will have to deal with capturing flying seahorses. Technically, it is a form of fishing, but in their world, they will have to use magic to harvest them. The Ravenclaw turned to see Mel give her answer and gave her a grin. Well, the grin can't be seen since half of his face was wrapped in his scarf.

Jace raised his hand again, offering another answer to the professor. "To harvest them for the Girding Potion, we have to use the seize and pull charm to capture them." he said glancing briefly at the jars up front.

Hmm. "But...how do you provoke them to break out of the water, professor?" he did read about the creature, but didn't bother to know it more. It was evident that Jace was a tad disappointed he didn't know. He was the student who offered the correct answer in the first place anyway.
