CoMC Lesson 1: A Day at the Lake!

Though your early morning class is normally held right outside of the barn, Professor Draper has decided to switch it up for the day. Following the instructions on your house noticeboard, you make it down to the lake for your first class of the morning. Luckily your Professor was feeling merciful and left a sign by the usual meeting place for those who failed to check the announcements. However, if that applies to you, you better be running to class. James doesn't tolerate tardiness.

The crisp late-January air greets you as you make your way towards a row of benches that sit a good distance from the lake. The grass is sporting a fresh layer of cold dew, however, the lake looks peaceful and undisturbed. Hopefully you wore layers, it’s a little chilly out.

Your seat on the bench faces both the lake and a portable chalkboard that Professor Draper rolled out for the lesson. And speaking of your Professor, he can be found standing in front of a large table off to the side. He stands there not only to greet you as you come forward to find your seat, but also to make sure that you don’t touch any of the empty glass jars on the table, those are for later.

Please pick a spot on the bench, class will begin promptly at 9:00 am!

OOC: Hi I’m BEYOND excited and incredibly nervous for our first official CoMC lesson together! However, please note that this should NOT be your character’s first lesson of the term! By this point in the year they should’ve already attended several lessons and will at least know some very basics about the subject!

Please remember all SS Rules and Classroom Rules apply. I have ways of knowing who didn't read them!
+ I will post in approximately 13-16 hours to start the lesson. Please get comfortable in the meantime, but try to keep excess chatter at a minimum ^^

Class has officially started! If you're just joining us now, please post as if you've been present the entire time. We'd love to have you join in at any point!!

Norah Kittredge knew BETTER than to be late, okay? Professor grumpyface Draper whose face wasn't really as grumpy as his rules made it seem would probably send her away before she even got to see any of the cute animals, and if that wasn't tragic then she didn't know what was. She'd left the Great Hall armed with her favorite fuzzy sweater under her robes early enough that the fact that she'd forgotten to go to the lake and initially showed up at the usual lesson spot didn't cause much of an issue. That was a nice sign he'd put up. She tried not to be surprised that he'd been so forgiving because believing the best in people was practically a LAW, but it was harder than you'd think. Grumpy rules, after all. They made people awfully mysterious.

Aaaaaand nobody was there yet. AW YEAH. She hadn't even had to RUN or ANYTHING. That had to be a world record. Hopefully Professor Draper would appreciate it, but just in case he didn't, the prefect put on her biggest, beamiest smile as she took a seat on a bench riiiiiiiight in the front. "Goooooood morning, Professor!" BEAMY BEAM. What a time to be alive. Was he excited? What was going to go in the jars? Would it be lake water? Would it be lake CREATURES? Would he notice if she borrowed one for flower keeping reasons? Why had he said they need to bring their wits? Would they have to tell witty jokes? Did he like puns? Did he know any good puns? 'Cause she didn't know any good puns. Could they have a lesson on that instead? In an effort to keep from EXPLODING from all the questions, Norah crossed her legs and rested her chin on her palm as she set herself up to give Professor Draper a good stare. You never knew what you could tell by just staring. Whoever pretended it was rude was just missing out on all the fun.

SilverTiger 02-17-2016 07:28 AM

Mornings and cold still were two things that made Brooklyn extra irritable, but at least layers helped with one of the two. Layers and a couple of well-cast heating charms, but either way, she wasn’t freezing walking out to the lake. Her occasional sojourn outside to read in the quiet had helped with that too, as she was more used to the chill. The hour, though, was another story. At least she finished eating the toast she’d snagged from the Great Hall before she arrived. It meant there wasn’t any evidence, and also she wouldn’t be starving. Both things that made it all a bit more bearable.

“Good morning Professor Draper,” she said, greeting the man with her usual smile reserved for the professors, making her way over to her chosen bench. She’d given a glance over at Norah, sitting there staring at the professor, too. But she held her tongue, instead taking her seat quietly. She was tempted to take out a book, but for now she’d just wait. At least she had a good vantage point for arrivals. She could hope that nobody annoying chose to sit by her.

Callie 02-17-2016 07:37 AM

Haddie shivered and muttered curses under her breath not suitable for the tender aged ears of her peers. She was still a distance away and out of earshot of the Child Hater, but she wouldn't be much longer. A few more steps and Haddie let her voice fall silent, only the clattering of her teeth could be heard now.

That. Man. Was. A. Sadist.

This was conclusive proof of that. The entire year to hold a lesson at the lake, those warm summer days that started the school year, or the warm summer days that will close it, any one of those would have been appropriate. But, nope. Professor Surly-pants picks the middle of the winter. The young Californian was not pleased. It didn't matter how much she layered or how much she bundled up, the cold got in. It always did. And this was only her second winter outside of California, so no, she wasn't used to it yet.

Haddie was cold, tired, uncomfortable and cranky. Not a good combination for her. There was no love in her eyes for the man as she approached. He looked as smug as ever, no doubt loving how miserable the children were. Why the man ever became a teacher is beyond her. Though whether or not he was a teacher and not some insidious creature like that Hag, feeding off the misery of children was still up for debate in her mind. "Drapes," she muttered in greeting. She said it distinctly as if it were one of those curses she had been muttering just out of earshot. Haddie found a seat, and as usual, couldn't help herself. "Planning on leaving anyone else frozen stiff today? You know, like you have in the past?"

RandomRaven 02-17-2016 09:07 AM

It's freaking cold today. And Professor Draper wanted them to have a class outside. Wasn't it just perfect?

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!

Putting on her thick winter coat (and of course her school uniform was under it), scarf and of course the mittens, the you lioness walked to the lake where they're gonna have the class. This grumpyface Draper had better provided them with bonfire, or heating charm... And some warm drinks too. Unfortunately not. Seriously, maybe this man wanted to make the students suffered hypothermia and died frozen.... Great! Professor Draper." Ava greeted that man. "What a nice and lovely weather, Professor. I even can't feel my fingers now."

Sarcastic enough, huh?

She went to an empty seat and waited until she froze to death the class had started.

DuckyLinJi 02-17-2016 09:34 AM

norah~

It had been a few lessons already but Yoongi still wasn't sure if he liked the Professor. It wasn't that he hated him or anything but he found him uncomfortable and awkward to be around with. He highly suspected the man was jealous of his Head Boy badge because he clearly never gotten it during his school years.

This time the lesson was at the Lake and the open field was even colder because of the weather today. Yoongi had wrapped a big coat around himself, the head boy badge hidden now as it was pinned on his Gryffindor uniform under the coat. As he arrived, he saw the Professor and forced himself to say a hello. "Hello Professor" he greeted before turning around and he of course spotted Norah and she was staring at.....wait...she wasn't staring at him but at the Professor. Refraining the urge to turn back around and glare at the man, Yoongi simply walked towards the Hufflepuff Prefect and stood in front of her, blocking her view. "Can i sit here?" he asked, pointing next to her.

Jealous much?

StarShine 02-17-2016 11:02 AM

Gonna assume Yoongi did sit by Norah ahem

9 AM sharp.

Katherine Mary Moss was there as sharply as she could. She was also witty by default, had a perfect common sense thank you very much, and had her perfectly working, polished-just-last-night wand saaaaaaaafely in her pocket. She had so far impressed the man (or at least he hadn't shooed her away from his lessons yet), so she was as confident as Katherine Moss could ever be (i.e. VERY confident). She was even relaxed to a degree.

She was gonna rock this class again.

"Hello, Professor Draper," she greeted the man with a polite and cute smile. Then she turned to look at the other people - her protector Head Boy, the weird Hufflepuff Prefect, the cold Slytherin girl, Ava and the girl, who was being extremely rude as usual. Katherine secretly readied her best condescending smile for the moment Professor reprimanded the girl and sat at the other side of Yoongi.

"Hi, Yoongi and Norah," she greeted them and smiled at Ava... who was complaining about the weather.

Yes, it was cold, but surely the Professor had a great reason for that? Good gracious, these people were such cry-babies.

Ameh 02-17-2016 11:21 AM

His head still hurt. Jaemin snuggled himself tighter inside his jacket, half-hidden inside of a scarf as he made his way down to the lake. It was a good thing he checked the board, because the tired little boy would definitely have not made it to class on time had he gone to the wrong place; there was no bouncing today, and the normally bright smile was replaced with a sleepy frown.

He had been feeling off the night before, and what had felt like a little bit of ickiness had blossomed into a full-blown cold overnight, complete with sniffles and a little red nose. He had come to school equipped with bandages, but no cold remedies... which meant he would either have to tough it out or see the nurse later. He would normally prefer the former, but when he actually was sick he turned into a helpless, sad little lump, so it would probably be the latter.

Still, Jaemin gave the professor a tired wave, barely taking in the jars on the table as he found a place to sit down and curl up into a warm little ball.

Jean Granger 02-17-2016 12:14 PM

Carl hurried to the Lake, having forgotten that they were not gathering at the usual meeting place. He definitely did not want to be late, knowing how Professor Draper disliked tardiness. Also ... today might just be the day he gets to see unicorns. He would hate to miss that.

The Hufflepuff walked towards the row of benches where people were arriving, noticing that he was quite early despite dropping by the wrong location. He smiled and greeted the Professor. "Good morning, Professor Draper!" He did notice the empty glass jars but well, it was empty. Not interested. So he picked a bench and took his seat.

And as usual, he looked around for unicorns.

Kolyander 02-17-2016 12:54 PM

It didn't matter that it was early. It didn't matter that it was cold. And it certainly didn't matter that it was the end of January and the lesson was to be held outside near the lake. All Hady seemed to take notice of was the fact that her first lesson of the day was by far one of her favorites. One she was sure to get a 'O' in on her OWLs at the end of the term.

Wearing nothing more then her usual lesson attire and having her hair pulled back off her face into a tight but neat braid Hadleigh made her way towards the lake a few minutes earlier then needed. Spotting the benches from a little bit aways still told her she was in the right place. "Morning, Professor Draper," she greeted with a small grin as she passed the man on her way to selecting a seat on the bench in the first row.

Now what was it there would be doing today?

Hera 02-17-2016 01:39 PM

Tardiness was not a thing that he did to classes that were likely to keep him awake... unlike HoM. By this stage in the morning he had already gone for his wake-me-up run, had showered, changed for class, ate, and was on time and alert for CoMC class. Like... 9 am wasn't even 'early', really. Even the change of venue couldn't throw him off his game today.

"Morning, Professor Draper," Zeke greeted with a nod as he gave the man's jars a quick look.

Interesting.

Were they going to be harvesting something today???

Zeke took his seat on a length of one of the benches near Hady, sending her a quick "Morning," greeting too.

PhoenixRising 02-17-2016 01:51 PM

It was early, yes. It was cold and made even colder by the fact that the Professor decided to hold the lesson down by the lake today which was definitely a colder area on the grounds. But surely he had a reason for it; professors, she discovered, didn't just do things for the thrill of it. They had reasons. Perhaps they would be learning about merpeople or the squid, but wouldn't that have been better reserved for a day in May or June, when they could swim? Then again, the Triwizard Tournament of 1994, she recalled reading that the champions had to swim in one of their tasks. The task held in the Winter time too; perhaps not catching hypothermia was part of the challenge.

Nonetheless, Tia was dressed warm, choosing to don leggings under her skirt that morning, and sneakers instead of flats.

"Morning Professor Draper," Tia greeted upon seeing the professor. Deciding it best to not sit near the same people all the time, the Head Girl went and sat down beside a young first year Hufflepuff (Carl), whom she hadn't the chance to really meet yet. "Morning," she greeted to him too, hoping he wouldn't be intimidated by her because of her badge. "I'm Tia."

FearlessLeader19 02-17-2016 01:54 PM

Goodness it was cold! Rachel wondered what on Earth Professor Draper would be teaching today that made him move the class to the Lake. "G-good morning, Professor,'' she greeted with a slight shiver as she drew her Ravenclaw scarf around her a little more. "I hope you're well.'' She cast a curious glance at the jars before turning her attention to the persons that had arrived.

She smiled at Hady, Carl, Katherine, Tia and Ava on her way to Haddie. Her poor best friend looked so miserable that the girl just wanted to bundle her up with more layers of warm clothing. Unfortunately, this could not be done. "Oh, Haddie. Professor Drapes, I mean Draper would no do that intentionally.'' Rachel had confidence in her Professors.

Daydreamer11 02-17-2016 02:47 PM

Janelle made her way down to the lake, enjoying every step of the walk. It was favorite class time and she couldn't wait to see what animal they would be working with today. It was a little chilly, but she liked it. January was her month and she enjoyed every minute of it.

Reaching the classroom area, Janelle looked around to see who was already there. "Hello Professor", she said with a smile. Spotting her friends, she began to greet them. "Hey Rachel, Hey Zeke". Then Janelle found an empty spot on a bench and sat down. Barely able to contain herself, she hoped that class would start soon.

MunchyBubbles 02-17-2016 03:16 PM

It was early morning..

And it was freezing outside. The young Ravenclaw made her way down to the lake slowly, she didn't want to slip! Also she was a bit wary about classes lately. Ever since potions..

She made her way to the benches and waved a mittened hand at her dorm mates. Before turning to the professor.

"Good Morning Professor Draper." She said with slightly chattering teeth as she sat down on a bench and stared out at the lake as she pulled her cloak in tightly around her to help ward off the chill in the air.

Sadly there was nothing to do about the cold inside her heart and she bit her lip and looked down, shivering slightly.

She wondered if Jace..

No Azura stop! Just... Stop. No more.

And whatever you do.. Don't cry.

Even if she did cry it like freeze to her face! That probably wasn't a good look!

But she wondered how Jace was doing with the cold and if he was okay? Should she have brought some spare mittens?

Stefan 02-17-2016 04:28 PM

Luck was on his side, because Jace was up early that morning for his first class that day. He knew Draper didn’t like late comers. That man honoured time, and it was something that him and Jace have in common. It was always frowned upon to be tardy...unless of course he had a valid reason like wrestling a full grown troll along his way to class. Dressed in layers of his standard uniform, Jace headed for the usual CoMC meeting place, only to find a notice that they are to meet near the Lake. The half-Japanese sighed inwardly, feeling helpless this time. Draper really doesn’t have mercy.

When he got to the area, he made his way towards the very front of the class, and inclined his head towards the man, half of his face wrapped in his Ravenclaw scarf. “Ohayo, Professor.” And...what are those clear jars for? Will they go...fishing? Jace didn’t like the idea one bit.

Too cold to even acknowledge his friends, Jace took a seat by himself upfront, and waited for the others to arrive. “’choo!” Eh...oops?

SniffSniff.

Austin, as everyone in this class should know by now, was not a morning person. His mental clock didn't start until 11 o'clock at the earliest. Anything before then was crazy. When he told his dad his dilemma of not being able to bring his tea anywhere, he was sent a 'travel mug'. Which was strange since it didn't look like a mug. There was a handle, yes but it wasn't ceramic nor did it have fun designs on it, such as a real mug did. It was silver and black, and probably made out of some metal. Austin wasn't sure. But, it carried his tea just the same, and he was grateful for this muggle thing.

He tried to mumble a pleasant "Good Morning Professor" before he sat on a bench.

Goblinfrog 02-17-2016 05:01 PM

Kitty kept her nose tucked inside her long red scarf as she hurried down to the Care of Magical Creatures lesson. She had bought it at Hogsmeade and she absolutely loved it.

"Good morning Professor," said Kitty as she sat down on one of the benches and waved at Rachel, Haddie, Azura, Tia, and Hady.

Steelsheen 02-17-2016 06:02 PM

The Creatures area is usually one of the loveliest places in Hogwarts. It’s a big reason why Tenacius liked hanging around there.

Today however was one of those days where he wished the Professor decided to just hold classes indoors. And bring the creatures to them. He doesn’t care how impossible or inappropriate that sounds, but he was freezing his tushie and the creatures should at least indulge them non-feathery, non-furry, warm-blooded minders.

"Mornin' Prof" The Gryffindor greeted the other man behind a muffled scarf as he took his seat on a bench.

VRSCIKA 02-17-2016 06:23 PM

It was a bit chilly out as Ilia walked out onto the grounds, but she liked it that way. This country still seemed warm in comparison to her previous home, even two years later. She loved the brisk air and smiled a little as she walked into the lesson. "Good Morning Professor." She was always happiest in this class as well. There was nothing better than working with creatures. Well....if Henric was already here it would be a little better.....but oh well. She had only one brush with death concerns so far this year, that wasn't too shabby for Hogwarts. She decided up front sounded good, why not? She picked a place on the bench and settled herself. While she waited for class to start, she took a moment to put her hair in a bun.....you just never knew when working with creatures....

Lissy Longbottom 02-17-2016 06:23 PM

Why did Scarlett have the feeling that they were going to be doing some sort of fishing...activity thing with those jars?

The Hufflepuff was COLD, and extra cold today, since she had just gotten over a small bout of the flu and hadn't fully bounced back yet. Thanks a lot, Florida. Apparently even in the warm, sunny skies of Disneyworld, you could still get a really nasty winter cold. So she'd worn a few extra layers to compensate, all topped off with her Hufflepuff scarf and matching gloves.

Why did professors always want to have classes OUTSIDE?

Jojogali 02-17-2016 06:25 PM

SPOILER!!: Hey Hady, Azura and Jace

Move your legs girl!! Her voice shouted in her head. Being late was not cool and she knew Professor Draper wasn't fond of tardiness. He had made it very clear before. But it was his fault to move the class's location. She had missed the announcement on her bulletin board, but there was no way she could miss it in the previous location. Luckily she always arrived a few minutes earlier. She made it to class just in time, halting a few inches from the bench, saving her knee from an unfortunate encounter. Thank Merlin.

She looked around, searching for familiar faces among the group of people already sitting and spotted Hady, Azura and Jace, all seating nearby. She waved to them, saying hi and sat herself in a free spot next to Hady. "How's it going?" she asked in a hushed tone, pulling her notebook and parchment from her bag. Elsa then proceeded to clear her voice and greet the professor "Good Morning Professor Draper".

She could tell it was cold, but she had been perfecting her warming charms and they seemed to be working fine. She felt specially cozy in her Hogwarts uniform. She looked again in Azura's direction and waved again, she looked...odd. "Is everything ok?" she mouthed concerned.

Casey O 02-17-2016 06:44 PM

Ellery was bundled up in like FIVE different layers of clothing. First was long underwear and a long sleeved shirt, then a sweater and pants, then a jacket with a hood, a hat, gloves, fuzzy socks, and boots. A scarf was wrapped around her neck and head, and covered the front of her mouth. She waddled closer to where everyone was gathered - the large amount of clothing seriously restricted her movement.

"Hrlou prrfrssor," she said, her voice muffled by the scarf. She had been freezing this morning, okay?

She went and sat next to her best friend, Katherine Mary Moss, though she avoided eye contact with Norah the PREFECT. Yuck. Power corrupts, people!!!!

"Hlo," she said to Katherine, then pulled her scarf down a little. "Hello," she tried again. "Pretend that I can pull off this much clothing, mkay?"

WhittyBitty 02-17-2016 07:08 PM

Why Professor Draper insisted on having a lesson by the lake on a COLD day was lost on Esme. However, she was not in a bad mood. Seeing the notice earlier that morning, she made sure to bundle up for the late-January weather. She also made sure to go straight towards the lake. There would be no freezing or being late on her part today.

"Hello, Professor Draper." Why was he looking over empty jars? That seemed a little odd though she supposed that the explanation would come a bit later. Maybe he just didn't want them to break which was understandable seeing as glass could be very dangerous even if it could be fixed magically.

Making her way towards a seat she waved to her friends as she passed them. Today she was going to sit by Hady. "Hey!" she told her friend with a smile. This was one of their favourite classes and she was sure that the Snake was every bit as curious and excited to start as she was.
