Haddie was way too frozen to answer Professor Flamsteed's first question. Which was probably for the best because the only answer she had was Because we're required to. The subject just didn't interest her, more so in that it was a subject that was taught at muggle schools and Hogwarts was supposed to not teach Muggle subjects.

Salvation arrived. Penny handed her a blanket and the little blonde first year looked up at the Ravenclaw Prefect, eyes filled with more gratitude than words could express. Certainly more than the simple, chattering "T-th-thank y-you!" was able too at least. She wrapped the new blanket around the space blanket the Professor had provided and almost instantly, now shielded from the cold, began to stop shaking. After a minute she'd stop shivering completely.

By that point Penny had already moved back to her seat, so Haddie caught the older girl's eye and mouthed another Thank you. She turned to Rachel, who had been looking at her with concern and nodded. "I'm okay. Now." Haddie made a point, however, to only ever come to Astronomy Class in full winter robes and with extra blankets just in case.

Now that she was warm, Haddie took a moment to reposition the blanket Penny gave her so it was also wrapped over the top of her head like a hood. She did not open her book or write on any parchment. That would require breaking her cocoon open and letting the cold in. And that was not happening.

"Bonfire!" Prof. Flamsteed had asked for a single word answer about how he could improve conditions in the classroom. And that was hers.

Roselyn 01-12-2016 07:10 PM

Apart from apparently giving a decent answer, he had a bit of trouble understanding some other things that were being mentioned. Like, osculation. What even... He didn't suppose that'd be a word he could look up in his astronomy textbook would it?

Aside from that...

Despite his shivering cold body, the professor's speech was rather inspiring. YES he was descended from astronomers! YES he wanted to look at the stars! YES he wanted to learn it ALL! All that motivation and inspiration... was probably going to be gone by the time homework came around, so might as well soak it all in while he had the chance. Plus, FIELD TRIP. That was the cherry on top. He wiggled a little more in his seat from the excitement.

The guy who mentioned hot chocolate was on the right track. The girl who mentioned making it colder though...

So not.

Lissy Longbottom 01-12-2016 07:11 PM

Scarlett decided that she LIKED this guy. He was enthusiastic about astronomy, and Scarlett was usually enthusiastic about EVERYTHING, so she figured they would get along pretty well. She was ready to LEARN!

Although - first he brought up that AWFUL smell. Scarlett didn't really have a sensitive nose, so she had SMELLED it, yes, but it wasn't that distracting to her. She just opened her mouth and breathed in that way. But it would be nice to be able to breath without thinking about keeping her mouth open and actively avoiding using her nose. She had wrapped herself in a blanket as well, so that didn't bother her. Still, she raised her hand to contribute - even though SHE wasn't THAT uncomfortable, she knew others were.

"You could help us first years out and cast the Bubble Head Charm FOR us," she suggested with a grin.

oh its Erik ok 01-12-2016 09:25 PM

Well the smell was PRETTY bad. But Dante had smelled worse. Just don't ask. Plus he knew it had to do with the class somehow. This was Professor Airey. So he would just deal with it. Bubble Head Charms were nice. But they did kind of make you look like an astronut. No offense Professor.Joint Lessons. Dante was never a big fan. Though he did remember a memorable one with Bellaire and Quigley. Now that one was awesome. But having a joint with Professor Paul did sound fun.

Huh Dante had to think about this some more.

"You could make it colder than it would feel like Professor Draper's office"

Not really answering the question. But it could always get worse. So sometimes you should not ask for things to improve. Maybe.

littledhampir 01-12-2016 09:46 PM

Yes, the classroom was uncomfortable. Thanks, Flamsteed, for pointing that out as if it was not obvious to everyone. As if it was not Flamsteed himself who had made the conditions of the room so undesirable. Olly thought he had liked the man, despite their adverse interactions the previous year, but this was one thing he did not appreciate. Why would he make his students suffer so much? Sure blankets had been provided and Olly might be a tad dramatic, but he still did not appreciate it.

He raised his hand. "It's cold," he stated like that was not obvious. "So it would be nice if we could do something to warm it up. Like start a fire. I know a spell, I could start one if you wish." Something told him Flamsteed would not take him up on that offer, but there was no harm in mentioning it.

Ameh 01-12-2016 10:27 PM

@.@ I'm behiiiind

When Jaemin had arrived at the class, he'd found himself extremely confused and cold. He didn't really know what the rule about the hand thingy was supposed to mean, because he had no idea what a Vulcan was or why the professor made it one of his rules, and he didn't understand why the classroom was so cold and stinky. Still, he had placed himself as close to the professor as possible so he wouldn't have to fight to see over old students, wrapped himself up in the blanket thingy, and stuffed his face into it to hide from the smell. It had taken him a good long minute to get the nametag thing sorted out because he hadn't wanted to let his face out off the blanket long enough, but he'd managed it.

The mention of joint lessons with Herbology and Muggle Studies caught the absolute entirety of his attention though, because YES. Those were two things he planned to be very good at in addition to this, so that would be the most fantastic lesson to ever exist.

One little hand went up at the question about making the classroom more comfortable. Jaemin didn't know any spells, but... "Mom uses special warming lamps to keep some of her plants from getting all wilty..."

And facemasks to avoid the smell of the fertilizer, but he could keep his face stuffed in the blanket if necessary.

"Maybe this is what it feels like on Neptune," the boy murmured to himself very quietly, curling into the blanket a bit more. Cold and stinky.

Nodding his head approvingly at the class, the professor turned towards his pet rock and jabbed his thumb towards the class in a very 'will you get a load at all that brilliance?' sort of manner. With a few exceptions, that is, but overall very impressive.

"Stellar," he applauded the class. Hopefully they all had been paying attention to what their classmates had been saying. Especially that bit about NOT snogging in the Astronomy Tower. AWESOME! A correct answer! She didn't get any extra points like some students did, but that was cool. She knew her time would come! Plus, she was overly amused by some girl's question about snails, and as it turns out, there ARE snails in space! Who would have thought?

OHHH, a joint field trip with Herbology! Ariadne loved Herbology, but Muggle Studies? She wasn't sure about that one yet. Speaking of cold temperatures, it WAS still pretty chilly in here. Freezing, maybe? Yes...freezing. Ariadne had an answer, though! "We could be closer to the SUN in here!" she suggested, raising her hand. "But not too close, because we'd be TOO HOT." She paused and thought about what she was saying. "Do you know how to do something like that, Professor? Put a magical Sun in a classroom?"

Another pause. "ALSO, can I float in the air like that girl?" she asked, looking up at Charlotte Kettleburn. It looked pretty awesome to be spending class just soaring around up there. This was the girl who'd asked about space snails, too! NEW FRIEND ALERT.

As Professor Flamsteed spoke, Esme continued to take notes. She could understand what he was saying, and that was good because he sometimes got rather long-winded in his lectures. She liked the man, but it was true.

Her hand was going numb.

The blanket helped most of her, but her poor hand was left exposed as was her head. Not very nice at all. At the next question, she raised her freezing hand to reply. "I think the Insulating Charm would really help." You know...to go with the heating charms and fires that her classmates were suggesting. That way the warmth would actually STAY inside and no more cold would get in. Win win in her book.

But what to do about those tornadoes that he had obviously created? Too bad she only had one suggestion she could give.

Ailsa watched the professor's smile fade as she continued her answer. It wasn't terribly surprising. Adults did that a lot with her answers. But really, he did ask why the class was required, and she'd given the correct answer. Had he asked why it was important, or even whether she agreed with the adults' assessment that the class was too important to leave it up to the students' discretion, the girl's response would have been different, but he hadn't asked those things and she stood by her answer, professorial blinking notwithstanding.

The prospect of a joint field trip amongst Astronomy, Herbology, and Muggle Studies was certainly interesting; moreso as nothing linking the three classes sprang immediately to the young girl's mind. There was something she didn't know and she looked forward to finding out.

As for the professor's question, she listened to the other students' comments, including requests for bubble charms as the professor wore. Those confused her a little since giving people bubble-head charms wouldn't change the conditions in the classroom one bit, they'd just isolate students from it.

"The cold we can live with, but maybe the smell could be changed to lilacs?" It wasn't one word, but it was one 'thing' and she'd hang her hat on that technicality. The smell wasn't really that much worse than the barns in summer, if she were honest, but she definitely wouldn't mind an improvement either.

Haddie glared at her cousin from across the room. "Speak for yourself Elsa!" She shouted across the room. Here she was bundled in two blankets just to be warm and her cousin was telling the Professor not to fix that. The nerve of that girl!

Elliot had sat relatively quiet in his corner of the semi-circle taking notes and listening to the other students. He had been silently thanking his one muggle in-law, as she was the only reason he had ever heard the term 'Vulcan'. His little ears perked when he heard the question about making the classroom more comfortable.

He set his quill down next to his wand and raised his hand chewing his lip in thought before speaking. "When I was younger and we lived in Romania it would get pretty cold in our house. Our parents would gather us all to tell stories or play a game where we learned something. Anything to keep our minds off the cold and it helped a lot." He thought again for a moment and continued as his nose wrinkled, "My older sister also uses a lot of perfume. Maybe that would help."

Oliver beamed at Professor Airey's nodding because he knew he'd given great answers. Duh. Everyone looked at the stars and thought they were pretty and stuff. Like, everyone. And anyone who didn't do it was lame and needed to rethink their priorities and stuff. But then...the professor was saying Ollie had brown stuff on his nose? "I...wha-" Just as he was about to rub the stuff off his nose, Oliver realized he was calling the boy brown noser. Rude. Mumbling, mostly to himself, he said, "Don'ttakemycomplimentsthen." NOT LIKE HE WAS LYING. Gosh. He would just go around giving compliments out to all of the other professors instead. Surely they'd be more grateful.

He jotted down notes of everything his classmates said as well as everything else the professor was saying, all brown nosing comments left out of course. And when the next question came, Oliver came close to making a comment about the professor and the spell, just to get back at him...but then he decided against it. The first class was not the time to get points taken away, especially not since they were already down some points. Instead, he kept his mouth shut and wrote down what all the other students had to say.

But he would have seven more years of Astronomy lessons, so he would be able to catch up. For now, he was focusing on keeping himself warm. And listening to Professor Flamsteed, of course.

He thought the answer to this question was easy, if not obvious. The Hufflepuff raised his hand and when called on, said, "It would be good if we stop getting lifted up into the air whenever we move. I mean, it's fun, but a bit uncomfortable for a lesson." He was thinking of talking about the cold air, but other students have done so already, and there was a Gryffindor girl floating in the air. Oops.

Samantha was not particularly interested in answering the last question. After all, Space wasn't really her thing, or at least not studying it. She'd rather be watching movies about the stars, not actually learning about them. She spent her time poking at the interesting name thing on her desk, as she listened to the others answer

But that did catch her attention. They were going on a field-trip? awesome!! Not like classes here were super boring like her old school had been. After all, they were just having their first lessons and all, but trips were always fun.

And then her Head of House asked a very good question. Except Ice haired Carl's answer made her frown. She raised her hand. "No, I think the floaty stuff is fun, I like it. You should make the boys put their shoes on or take baths or something because it smells funny in here." And she was used to what normal people would think smelled... bad. And well obviously the boys were the reason it smelled.

Awarlesta Black 01-13-2016 02:38 AM

Cal had been quietly shielded under the blanket. From the cold, from the smell, from the corny jokes the professor was dropping. "Dude--Professor, maybe some flowers or something could help." IT SMELLS SOOOO BAD. It smells like that time Vin cut the cheese after eating twenty pumpkin pasties. "Or just open a window, that could work, too."

Sararara 01-13-2016 03:09 AM

Norah grinned at Professor Flamsteed, a little surprised that he hadn't jumped on anybody's desks yet, and picked up a quill to record his explanation. Alright. Hand back in the cocoon now, yeah? It was AWFULLY cold, and as hard as she was trying, she wasn't getting used to it. What a life.

It did make the next question fitting, though, so with a slightly wrinkled nose she held a hand over her head. He really should've told them to bring gloves. "You could fill the room with loads and loads and loads of FLOWERS! The lovely smelling kind, not the other ones." Y'know, 'cause the smell was only getting more and more dreadful. It'd stink for anybody who had allergies, though, which was unfair. She didn't even like to think about what her life would be if she couldn't smell FLOWERS.

LilFox06 01-13-2016 03:21 AM

Sweet. Kaycee would gladly accept points for that. Plus, that was kind of amusing to witness. The professor just liked to point, didn't he? Excitedly.

What could make the class better? Besides the smell? Or getting out early? "A bed maybe?" she offered after half-heartedly raising her hand. She then yawned dramatically to prove her point.

It was lateish, okay?

Cassirin 01-13-2016 03:53 AM

Points weren't going to make up for all the professor's misdeeds, but Dot took 'em. She wasn't stupid. Even when she was feeling wrathful, she still wasn't stupid. She tucked her hair into her blanket cape and gave the man a solemn nod.

"The tornadoes keeping blowing up my robes and that's just rude. I'd like to teach them manners, but at the very least, I'd like wooly socks and a pair of sweatpants to keep out the rude wind things."

Holmesian Feline 01-13-2016 04:45 AM

She couldn’t help smiling as Professor Flamsteed accepted her answer, complimenting it, even though she was vaguely aware another student might have touched on it as well from across the room. Oh well. Olivia would certainly take it as well as some of the other answers that the man agreed with, the Ravenclaw taking note of them though not writing anything down. Keeping track of person and belongings was chancy enough.

And then her attention perked up at the mention of a join field trip.

Majorly cool!!

Olivia shivered slightly as if in response to Flamsteed’s further inquiry. Hospitable….maybe. But not the most comfortable would be her answer. And her fellow students were already touching on ways to deal with the two most prevalent issues; the cold and the smells. Not to mention her roommate cousins seemed to be in disagreement about which was more important, with Olivia tending to side with Ailsa at the moment. “Protection around us to block the cold and smell might be nice.”

Two birds...one stone.

StarShine 01-13-2016 05:53 AM

Katherine had truly not consciously felt the stench when she first entered, because 1. new class, 2. new professor, 3. lots of opportunities to learn. However, as soon as she answered, she smelled it and almost couldn't focus on the professor's answer (though she DID hear the 'Excellent,' and smiled to herself proudly). She hadn't got her notebook and quill out yet and now she doubted she should. Was... astronomy tower always windy and stinking like this?

She listened to some answers first again. It was striking how many mentioned the temperature, but not the quality of air. So she raised her hand as she involuntarily wrinkled her nose.

"I think there's something rotting in here," she said, "or a source of this smell, at least. Because the winds ought to clear the air if it wasn't here." She looked around. "We should locate it and get rid of it." Unless... this was a trick of the professor to teach them yet something again.

Please. He was just a little bit concerned over here. David pushed his glasses up his nose again and gave the professor a serious, but not unkind, LOOK.

Callum was very satisfied with his paragraph, and as he looked up, he caught the smile and nod the professor gave him. It seemed that Airey was happy with him for writing so diligently, but the first year was confused. The man had not even seen what he had written, so his seemingly small sign of approval did not make sense to him. Was he just humoring him, then? Was the professor just an encourager by nature? Did he not care about the content or quality of what Callum was writing down?

He was unsure, but he made up his mind that he would show the professor what he had written later and prove that it was worth being proud of him for. In fact, he folded the parchment right up, pocketed it, and pulled out another sheet of parchment to resume note-taking on. Then his Head of House would see later.

As the lesson progressed, Callum was engrossed in what the professor had to say, taking in every word, and the most prominent thing that happened was, of course, the professor telling Char that there were snastronauts, and up into the air his sister went with Davie interjecting for Airey to keep Char from floating away in a very humorous little spiel. Callum's attention span had sufficiently taken him away from the scientific matters at hand and instead made him smile and giggle from over in his little space blanket cocoon.

Best. Class. Ever.

It elicited just the shadow of a smile, though the Ravenclaw's mouth and nose were still covered by the space blanket, making it impossible to notice.

But then that was it, and disappointment and dissatisfaction seeped in, and Daxton stared at the professor for a good long moment, trying to figure out exactly why he felt disappointed with regards to his reaction, and failing miserably. With a subtle frown suddenly gracing his features, a frown of confusion and of something he could not quite place, Daxton took the new piece of parchment. This time he wrote as small as he possibly could, so small it was nigh on impossible to make out the words were one not stood with their nose almost touching the parchment (soon-to-be plaque), small enough that were he using quill and ink instead of ballpoint pen it would have simply turned into a smudge. That done, Daxton retrieved his wand once more, and tapped the new parchment to make a third plaque.

He had done as instructed, had he not? There was his name, there was his year... barely visible, but they were there. He was, technically, following instructions, but now he had the loophole of technically abiding by the rules in case pushing his luck backfired.

Leaning back in his chair again, Daxton adjusted the blanket over his face to try and get some cooler air. The effort was futile; using an insulating blanket as a face mask in a foul smelling classroom only worked in theory, but the air he was breathing was too hot, and his breath coming in shorter bursts than he would have liked because of it. He was so focused on this fact that he almost missed that particular bit of information about a field trip. Almost, but not quite. Daxton paused, blinked in the Astronomer's direction, and wondered; he was not sure how he felt about another field trip, though it depended entirely on where they were going. That was... if he would even be permitted to go after last year's debacle.

Once again, when the question came, Daxton offered no response. He had his notebook out now, but the blowing wind in the classroom would make it infuriating to try writing in it, and it was not a response that was worth being written down anyway - nor were any of the others being provided. But his answer? The smell. It did not matter that it had already been mentioned; it was unbearable, and it was worth more than one mention. People were moaning about the cold, but Daxton found little issue with the temperature of the room, aside from his feet which, being bare, needed to be tucked underneath him to keep warm and retain sensation. But the stench of the room, that needed to go; Daxton was getting a little lightheaded from using the insulating blanket to cover his face and breathing only hot air, but knew nothing else within his resources would block the smell quite so well. He remained silent, staring off into space and fiddling with the edge of the space blanket, thoughts travelling elsewhere entirely.

So not.

And by the time her little brain caught up to the conversation her classmates had already come up with all of the logical and some of the less logical (looking at you Gryffindors) answers to how to make this environment more hospitable.

She pulled the shiny blanket closer around herself.

Again, Zeke didn't reply. The obvious points had been made.

Issue: Cold; Solution: Magic.

TADA! He wasn't going to be the ground-breaking shock-jock of a genius to point that one out, he was deciding that right now it wasn't his style. Continuing to do all the fiddling with the shiny, Zeke peered around as people spoke, but gave no response to Professor Flamsteed.

He also didn't understand why it was also, so cold. Like it was bad enough that he had a weather and climate shock every time he came back to school but dealing with it at night too, when the Professor could easily charm them warm was just annoying.

Also, what was the point of studying the stars if he couldn't take pictures of them? And you know what? He couldn't!

All thanks to professor jerk sausage head Flamsteed. He had to send his precious camera home.

Bentley sighed and pulled his blanket closer to him while listening to his classmates.

Was this a two hours or one hour lesson session...he couldn't remember.

For whatever their reasons, those that had elected to remain silent were each given an approving nod. Mr. Prince, however, received a little more than that as the professor was going to write this off as a small victory over teenage rebellion.

Blue eyes passing over each of them in turn, the astronomer did not linger long before moving on to the next raised hand.

...

Interesting.

"Well, thank you," he chuckled, glancing over his shoulder at Pebbles with an amused expression. "I shall keep that in mind for future lessons."

Only not really, but assuming the boy was humoring the man then he would humor back.

Kay put her hand up and answered the question: "We can dress like astronauts, like what you are sort of doing, sir. It would help with the smell and with the cold." She said softly.

"That is an option," he nodded. Although that was not the sort of response he was looking for. "Although I was looking for options that have to do with changing the actual environment of the room itself rather than what we can do to ourselves."

A small distinction, but a significant one.

True as it was that she herself did have her own blanket covering her lap she honestly wasn't very cold. With a slight laugh under her breath she brought her attention back to the Professor.

Mentions of a joint field trip had certainly gotten her attention. Yes! Field trips were always the best! It didn't matter if said trip was boring it was a break from lessons and a chance to get outside the area of Hogwarts with friends. Whatever it happened to be this term was going to be looked forward too. However a question was asked and Hady had to cap her thoughts and focus once more. "Personally I'm used to the cold so it doesn't exactly bother me any but maybe the use of a simple heating charm or any other number of charms could be used depending on the discomfort one is currently experiencing?" A simple answer really but an answer none-the-less.

Well, she didn't want Professor Flamsteed to turn the classroom into as hospital. Ava didn't like hospitals. It's creepy, full of sick and dying people, it's also had a weird strong scent. But clearly, there's something wrong from this classroom. "Professor, I think we need a light and warmth from the sun. When Professor Flamsteed moved on to ask his second question, Janelle's hand shot up into the air. She was too slow apparently because someone presented her answer before she had a chance to share it. The hot air charm would definitely be good to warm things up in the classroom. By the time Janelle was called on, she had switched to plan B or answer B, as the case may be.

"We could definitely stand for the room to be made warmer. Maybe bluebell flames could help a little bit." As for the incredible stench, well that was another problem entirely. Fortunately Janelle was pretty adept at breathing through her mouth and trying not to smell. Even so, she couldn't help but catch a whiff every now and then. And it was not pretty.

What perked the girl's interest was the mention of the joint lesson of Astronomy, Muggle Studies and Herbology. She wondered what this lesson could be about but as long as it involved plants, she didn't mind what they did.

Rachel raised her hand once more. "Perhaps the use of an Insulation Charm, Professor. We would all be extensively less cold then.'' Poor Henric was obviously having a difficult time coping with the extreme cold.

With the sun having gone down hours prior, they would need to wait until morning for its rays to warm the classroom - although those responses did receive small nods as he made his way around the raised hands.

"Temperature," he agreed as he removed his wand from his enchanted breast pocket once again and raised it in preparation. "Thankfully, I did not go to such extremes as to simulate a planetwide -55 degrees Celsius, but raising and regulating the temperature of the classroom would certainly make for a more comfortable."

Then, with a small flick of his wand, the enchantments in place to make the room feel like an invisible snow storm was in place were removed. Gradually, the temperature began to rise and soon the blankets were no longer necessary.

Erm what?? Had she really just suggested that. Oh well, no going back now. Maybe she should have put more thought into her original unique answer. Next time.

Unless you were Miss Royal. Apparently. Who seemed to rather enjoy the cold and perhaps would have appreciated it if he had in fact made the classroom excruciatingly cold.

Nodding his head, the professor gave another flick of the wand to banish the horrendous odor that had plagued the classroom until that moment. Once he was sure the smell had dissipated - meaning he counted to 10 Mississippi-ly - he removed his own Bubble Head Charm. He was unsure if he was impressed or disappointed that no one had taken the initiative to perform the spell on themselves or offer one to a classmate. Perhaps Miss Swynford was on to something with the mention of body odor? Was this general just used to bad smells?

"ALMOST!" he declared with some more of his infamous dramatic pointing towards the young man whose answer he just so happened to have heard as he made his way around the semicircle of desks. "But not Neptune. Mars."

Which really was the perfect lead in to the next portion of the lesson.

"In theory, what you all just did now with your suggestions is precisely what planetary engineering is all about. However, as is explained on page 579 of your textbook, there are some very large obstacles in the way of achieving this." He paused for a moment to move back to the middle of the semi circle of desks. "The process would take centuries to achieve and we only saw out first manned orbit to Mars in the early 2040's, so even before a plan could be put in place there is a dispute among scientific minds as to whether or not we, the human race, should terraform Mars at all. What are your thoughts on the subject? Colonization, terraforming, or none of the above? You may refer to your textbooks for further information should the need arise."

There was no right or wrong answer, he was merely curious what the future generation felt when approached with this topic.
OOC: this will be the final question before we get into the main activity. Please feel free to engage with each other and debate, you do not need to wait for me to post again. Instructions for the main activity will be posted approximately 20 hours from the time of this post.

Early 2040's is an arbitrary time period I selected as "in theory" such a mission MAY be possible by the 2030's according to current predictions. I've just fluffed a bit:lol:

Dancing daisies, he could feel his fingers again. His toes on the other hand, needed some more time to warm up, but the shivers running throughout his body began to decrease as the temperature in the tower rose. Plus, it was less smelly, but he was kinda used to smelly things by now. Wasn't a real problem.

Having not read anything in his textbook apart from what was necessary, this was kinda new information for him. Kinda, as in completely. But it was a cool subject, there was no denying that. They could CHANGE a PLANET! Like... did people realize how cool that was?!

"We should totally do it!" he said after eagerly thrusting his hand into the air. "My gram says there are too many people on earth, so we should totally go live on Mars. Leg room and all that. Personal space boundaries." Space boundaries. Getit? "Unless, Mars has already been claimed by... someone else..."

Or something else.

Aliens existed. Totally.

Kolyander 01-13-2016 12:28 PM

As the air around the room warmed up and the blanket wasn't needed anymore Hady found herself still not removing it from over her lap. Oddly enough she found it comfortable so there the space blanket remained. It wasn't like the item was in her way or anything, anyhow.

Being able to breath fresh non smelly area was good as well. It was enough to have made her nose crinkle but nothing that would've made her sick to her stomach thankfully. Both changes in the room were a quiet blessing however and now she sat much more comfortable as Admiral Airey went on with his lesson.

The question asked this time was enough to stop her for a few moments and cause her to really think. Honestly Hady never gave it much thought before but now was as good a time as any to do so. "I think it's at least worth testing out. If we're able to fully live there without any major faults from the land then it should at least be given a chance" she answered, hand raised into the air. Surely many many things would have to be tested a number of times and it would likely be a very long time before this could ever happen but why shouldn't it?

oh its Erik ok 01-13-2016 02:54 PM

So putting life on other planets. Well now this was all beginning to sound like a science fiction book. What's next loading all the prisoners in a space ship and have them orbit a planet? Wait that actually would sound awesome if possible. Maybe eventually see if their is Aliens. The odds are are there actually are since the universe is a very very very big place. So much space. HeHe.

"It sounds cool but like you said we would be dead by the time anything is achieved. But why not. If scientists can make Mars habitable to humans then why not at least try"

He would not be alive to see the results.

Uncle Moose 01-13-2016 03:10 PM

Totally missed the stink so here's an excuse XD

okay so Mister Professor Flamsteed was throwing them for a loop. The room was cold, and apparently stinky...which he hadn't noticed due to the blanket covering his face occasionally and having a stuffy nose from a lingering cold.

AND HE WASN'T GIVING HIM HOT COCOA HERE!?

Rude

Torrance tried to wrap his head around this Terraforming business and he thought he got the most of it even from turning his text book to the said page....but there was still something on his mind. "Didn't some Astronaut grow plants on Mars though?" Yeah, wasn't there like an old documentary about it...or a movie based on a true story about a book that it came from?

FearlessLeader19 01-13-2016 03:55 PM

Rachel looked over at Haddie once more as the temperature dipped. She was relieved (and was sure her best friend was as well) that Professor Flamsteed had graciously done this as well as get rid of that horrible odor and the mini tornado- like things. The girl removed her blanket then folded it neatly to put on the edge of her desk.

Quill poised to take notes, Rachel listened attentively to their Professor. Yes, she had read a few articles about hopes of making Mars habitable for humans. "I think we should continue trying to make it habitable for humans,'' she offered, her right hand in the air. "Even if we may not be able to experience living there, future generations most certainly could.'' Her brown eyes fixed on the Gryffindor boy (was he an unruly one as well? Torrance) with interest. Plants on Mars? Wow. She looked to Flamsteed for confirmation or denial on this subject.

Callie 01-13-2016 04:28 PM

Haddie sighed in relief as the temperature rose. And that the smell, and gravity and tornado thing had also been fixed. But mostly that the cold was, because the cold was unbearable, to the point it made the rest less noticeable. But now that the Teach had explained it was part of the lesson, she had to admit it was pretty clever.

Shrugging off the first of her blankets -but not the second just yet- Haddie piped up. "But what about the lack of a strong magnetic field to protect the planet and keep an atmosphere? Isn't Mars' core, like, solid and no longer producing a field strong enough to protect it from the sun's radiation, and that's why its atmosphere burned away so long ago?" How did terraforming fix that?

How did she know that? Oh right, the 17 hours of space documentaries her parents made her watch as punishment for the Griffith Park field trip thing. She glanced at Rachel and shrugged.

So her answer wasn't ALL the way correct, but it wasn't wrong either. Ariadne was starting to think Astronomy might be one of her toughest subjects. You had to REALLY think outside the box in this class, and that was pretty hard if you hadn't been in space and seen things for yourself. This was only her first year and her first class, though. She still had time! The good news is that the smell and the freezing cold temperature had been charmed back to normal. Maybe THAT would wake up her brain cells!

Terraforming. Ariadne had never even heard the term before. Either way, the professor sure liked to talk! She got the gist of things, though, AND she had an idea! It was an open debate, but she raised her hand anyway. "But we still haven't figured out if there really is life on other planets or not. What if there really is? And what if the ones who live there need a certain temperature to survive?" she pointed out. "We could be wiping out this whole different civilization that we don't even know about."

BUT...if there really was no other living beings on any other planets, then yeah. She was game for whatever. It WOULD make a really long spaceship ride to go visit relatives on other planets, though.

Lissy Longbottom 01-13-2016 05:29 PM

Hmmm, did she really want to have humans on MARS? Scarlett's first answer was no. She had read enough history books to know that just from humans taking land on THIS planet that wasn't theirs, problems almost always ensued. She could hardly imagine if they took a PLANET.

She raised her hand. "I don't like it, Professor. It's not ours to take - we should focus on taking care of our own planet here before we think about trying to take over another. We can't just go around messing up the ecosystem in any planet we feel like!" she told him. If they were going to have too many people for this Earth to take care of, well, they should make a space station or something. Not just glob onto the next hospitable thing.

RandomRaven 01-13-2016 05:40 PM

Moving to Mars? Wow. That sounded cool though....

But she didn't think it was a good idea. Wasn't that Earth such a perfect place for human? "I dunno, Professor. Part of me said that it's gonna be cool if we could move to Mars. But my twin brother said that the Earth is a perfect place since it's not too far or too close to the sun." Because, if they lived too close to the sun, they're gonna die of melting or burning. But if they lived too far, they're gonna die of hypothermia.

She wanted to bring the water issue but.. Hey, wizards can conjure water from their wand!

itsjustjesse 01-13-2016 07:26 PM

Mel listened to what everyone was saying and raised her little eyebrows as she heard what they were doing….teraforming? That sounded AMAZING! Looking around at the other students she just huffed and continued breathing the smelly air…raising her hand she looked around.

“The one thing I’m really curious about is that we know our magical abilities work on earth – would they work on a newly teraformed planet? Is at all possibly that our abilities are directly related to the magnetosphere here on earth and the liquid metal core?” She asked as she had just looked up the words in her textbook. “If it does work I’d say it could be an interesting experiment but I would say developing Mars and colonizing it we should at least try and do so in as much of an energy conscious way as possible…we don’t want to rip a hole in their ozone layer do we?” She asked cautiously.

littledhampir 01-13-2016 07:38 PM

Even thought Flamsteed did not take Olly up on his offer to light a fire, he was pleased that the man did raise the temperature of the room. Olly was able to un-burrito himself from his blanket and set it on the top of his desk in front of him. "Professor, can I keep this blanket?" Or...all of them? They seemed like they would be good blankets to make a fort out of.

As for the information, Olly tried his best to pay attention. He did not, in fact, open his book. Because what was the point of reading some information if Flamsteed was just going to talk about it? As for the question, he had to think about it for a bit before answering. "Personally, I don't really want to go to Mars. But if other people want to, uh, terrerform it, I guess they should be able to as long as they do it in a way that is not harmful to the planetary environment." Like Global warming. Given the chance, they should not go and destroy every planet in the solar system.

WeasleyGirl 01-13-2016 07:39 PM

Well, one thing Hugo could definitely appreciate right now would be his bed because the cold only made him want to be asleep. This time he didn't raised his hand and just listened what the others had to say.

Next, Flamsteed started explaining terraforming. He wrote down that word because he has never heard of it before. Maybe he could impress someone with a extended vocabulary. Ehem. Hugo thought for a bit about the question the professor just said. He raised his hand, "It would be awesome to live somewhere else that isn't the earth but I don't know, it's kind of hard to picture another "earth". It would take years to have everything we have here, in Mars" made sense, right? Yes.

WhittyBitty 01-13-2016 10:42 PM

Aaaah, much better...

As the temperature of the classroom returned to normal, Esme discarded the space blanket. If she kept it on she would begin to feel a little TOO warm for her tastes.

Professor Flamsteed was starting to sound pretty long-winded and that was a shame because up until this point she had been able to follow everything that he was saying. Frown. She would just open her textbook to the page that he had indicated and see if it made more sense to her...

Okay.

Terraforming Mars...

She bit her lip and thought about the matter before raising her hand. "I think it's worth a shot. I mean if we can help another planet to support life why not go for it! With all the crap humanity is doing to the Earth we would have somewhere else to go and a fresh start. If we don't get our act together and fix our planet, that is." Just saying. Fixing Earth was the most important thing.

Hopefully no one would mess it up.

Yourenodaisy 01-13-2016 10:57 PM

Samantha was quite happy when the professor started to fix all the things that were wrong with the room. She no longer felt like an ice lolly, and it no longer smelled bad. And apparently it wasn't the boys, which was quite a surprise. She was also glad that he left the extra bouncyness in the room.

Oh, terraforming? She was pretty sure they had talked about in in one of those space movies that Em liked to watch. She was pretty sure it wasn't Star Wars, but maybe one of the other ones? Maybe it was the one with the space cowboys, or the one with the pointy eared b... er aliens. But there was something else she had seen. "Oh, OH!" She said excitedly and waived her hand in the air, which caused her to move a bit in her seat, thanks to gravity. "Professor, I think its a bad idea." She nodded emphatically. "At least for Mars. I saw this really old video, documentary thing that had to be from when you said they went to Mars, and almost all the people died. The water was poison, well not poison, but it turned the people into these space monsters. It was really bad, just touching the water caused people to be monsters. And like Torrance said, they grew plants, but eating the plants caused it too." She continued to nod. Yep, she knew what she was talking about. It paid off to have a sister who liked space things. This class was going to be easy.

Daydreamer11 01-13-2016 11:15 PM

Janelle listened as her classmates shared their thoughts. It was interesting to see which student focused on which issue. Personally, she found the cold to be the most unbearable problem, but clearly that was not true for everyone.

As Professor Flamsteed began to speak again, Janelle paid close attention. She knew that a question would be coming soon. When he made the room start to feel more normal, she was relieved. She eventually took of her space blanket, once she started to warm up again. And then the question. It was an interesting one and at first Janelle wasn't sure what she thought. After a moment, her thoughts became more clear and she raised hand to give her opinion.

"I think that studying Mars is a good thing. It is important to learn all that we can about the planet. Maybe that knowledge can help us deal with things here on Earth. But........I'm not so sure that terraforming is the way to go. Who's to say that we have the right to change the way things are on a planet that is not our own? And do we really need to live there? Studying, yes. Terraforming and colonizing? I don't think so."

Hera 01-14-2016 12:16 AM

One of the things he disliked about Astronomy, was the way in which Professor Flamsteed harped on about things with scientific terms as if he was supposed to understand it. He didn't. Dates and things just went straight in one ear, and out the other. The only thing he managed to take away from what was being said, was something about living on Mars.

Terraforming.

Huh.

Things.

As it was, he actually DID have an opinion on the matter, and so he raised his hand to share his nugget of wisdom with the class. "I think it's best if humans look and don't touch. We've ruined the Earth in many ways, so we shouldn't have the right to do the same to another planet. We should leave things as they are, in their natural state." Like forests. Wild, natural forests. Weren't they glorious? The ones without paths or rows of neatly planted trees. Mmm. He thought so.

Whoa that was kind of a lot of information. Ollie jotted it all down...mostly...y'know, key notes, like, 'Airey is mean sometimes' and 'Bet Martians are brown nosers.' Nothing too terribly informational.

Now that the next question was asked, however, Oliver decided maybe he could answer this one with a good answer. And then he could win 100 POINTS FOR SLYTHERIN. Or just one. One would be cool too........ Really he'd be fine if the whole brown nosing thing never came up again. Yup.

The boy looked at his useless notes and tried to think about everything the professor had just said. The only thing he came up with was pretty basic...but definitely good enough for him.

Raising his hand, Ollie said, "Why can't we just stay on Earth? I know it's dying and all, but that doesn't mean we should go off and kill another planet. That's stupid." What were they gonna do? Move down the line of planets and end up on Pluto and actually consider it a planet again? Because Ollie highly doubted Pluto would gladly let them live on it. Plus it was small and cold. "I think we all need to figure out how to fix Earth and the atmosphere and stuff and maybe once we do that, we can consider moving to Mars....if it's necessary." But, like, it wouldn't be because they'd have Earth, so...yeah.

Gaze flickering back to Airey Flamsteed, Daxton narrowed his eyes in what might have been an unmistakable glare to anyone who knew him well enough - admittedly, that list was very short.

Soon it became clear that the smell was gone, but Daxton was reluctant to leave the safety of the untainted air, however warm, inside the blanket. Problem was that soon the classroom was no longer cold, and after barely any time at all it was far too warm. Daxton so much preferred the cold, and adjusting back to room temperature was, frankly, horrible. He wrestled with the space blanket all bunched on on his lap and over his face, now an oppressive hindrance, and flung it impatiently off to the side, finally breathing the moderately fresher air.

After that point, Daxton merely sat silently, elbow on the desk and head propped up by his hand. While his classmates offered ideas and opinions about terraforming, he whiled away the minutes and sudden surge of boredom by writing his own thoughts in his notebook, using a writing system he had made up, the key to which could only be found in his head, so nobody could go snooping and read it. As for his thoughts, they were mainly disdainful. Humanity was disgusting, and generally undesirable. If Daxton really was a part of the human race, and there was a chance, he resented it all the more. The thought of humans colonising Mars - colonising anywhere in space, space which Daxton had personally and privately claimed as belonging to him, and him alone - was terrifying. First Mars. Then the next planet. Sooner or later, humankind would be sprawled across the galaxy, then taking over and polluting the entire universe with its very existence. It was not destroying the planets that Daxton cared so much about, but his general detestation of humans in general, and his desire to keep them contained and well away from the wonder that was the universe. His universe.

After writing a full page of neat and perfectly scripted but unintelligible (to anyone but himself) words, Daxton stopped and set down his pen. He gave it a gentle nudge, then another, making it spin round and round on the desk as his eyes tracked its progress, brain ticking away all the while. It may have looked to anyone as though he was thinking deeply about the matter at hand, but he was not, because he had formed his thoughts on the matter long before now. No, Daxton was not thinking about terraforming, but of what Airey Flamsteed had said about how they would soon be utilising the gravity issues in the classroom. That did not sound like an activity Daxton would find fun, and so he was thinking on whether or not it might be time to feign some kind of physical ailment to get out of the classroom.

Tia nodded politely at the congratulations about the badge, but then went off into her note-taking frenzy. Well for the first question it was more just listening and observing because she knew why Astronomy was taught from first year, she just wanted to see what others had to say on the subject.

Then Flamsteed went off to discuss the climate in the room and making it more comfortable. She had to refrain from laughing at David Truebridge, suggesting to take away the professor's wand, since it was obviously magic. But as the lesson continued on, Tia realized something. The freezing conditions in here were on purpose; they were supposed to be reminiscent of the climate on Mars. At least that what Tia assumed by the climate; he was engineering the classroom to be similar to that of the neighboring planet.

Tia raised her hand, after hearing much of the class wishing to colonize Mars, "I don't think we should be colonizing Mars, because while it is fascinating to learn about the climates of other planets, if we were meant to be elsewhere besides Earth, then don't you think we'd already be there? Humans, whether magical or mundane, require certain things in order to be sustained and if Mars doesn't provide those basic necessities, then we shouldn't be messing with Mother Nature's intentions and changing the atmospheric pressures and levels because it changes not just the pressures of that area, but surrounding areas, potentially making Earth inhabitable."

Eyeing her rock a little, he pulled his blanket closer to his body even more.

Ilia caught the thumbs up he gave her and smiled a bit. She liked when he was proud of her after all. Henric leaned closer in her direction and did her best not to grin. She was in class , no pda on school grounds....all that stuff. As for his shivering though, she plucked her pet rock off of the blanket package and set him in her robes. The now unoccupied blanket she unfolded and set on her boyfriend. There! She didn't think it would do all that much, but hey it was worth a shot. Hailing from the north, England normally felt warm to her, so this temperature just reminded her of winter in Norway. The smell of the room was offending her far more than the cold was. Would someone get that gas under control already?

Her thoughts were answered as she felt the room grow warmer, the stench subsided, and the little dust tornados died down. Much more pleasant........and now hopefully Henric wouldn't be chattering his sentences. As for his question , she mused it over. Ilia was not familiar with muggle science fiction other than what Henric had shown her and was rather in the dark about it. She knew that there was 'War Stars' or something like that, and 'Star Trekking' but what it was actually all about other than the random episodes she had seen, she didn't have much of a clue. Although he threatened to change her ignorance of it come summer.

The entire idea of completely changing another world and subduing it though........"I don't think I would believe it to be right to deform and subdue another planet to our whims. There is nothing wrong with the one we have, other than we need to try and fix what past generations have blindly broken. Mars is what it is, why does it need changed to suit us? We do not need to allow our population to expand so far that we must change other worlds simply to support our species. There is potentially so much to study, why should we destroy that by attempting to change it rather than understand it?" The sixteen year old supposed she felt that way about more than just 'terraforming' another planet but, it was certainly how she felt.

She went silent and leaned more towards Henric as she watched. No need to run her mouth more and lose the points that she had just won back.

Sweet solstice.

Clearing his throat at the first part of Mr. David's answer, the astronomer DID take the latter half into consideration and looked over in the direction the second year indicated...

"Not to worry, Mr. David. What goes up must come down," he mused. After all, gravity in the classroom was still very much present. Just at one third capacity as per usual.

Still, to be absolutely sure, he did bound over and grab Miss Kettleburn by the leg to gently drag her back down to her seat.

Well, good. Char would be returning to her seat now safely. Why did Davie feel like he always had to look out for the Kettleburns' safety? Silly Gryffindors. He smiled kindly, approvingly almost at the professor, even though the man hadn't made any couches appear. Hmmph. Maybe he was more of an ottoman and armchair kind of guy...

The professor had heard him! Jaemin looked at him, a little wide-eyed as the classroom warmed up and stopped being stinky. How was his hearing so good when he did that sonic screamy thingy? Surely the downside of that would be deafening himself a bit... but apparently not. Jaemin made a note to never mumble things in this professor's presence... he'd still hear them.

He wondered if the man could hear thoughts, too. Maybe if he thought loud enough... he'd have to test that out some other time though. Right now, there was class stuff to think about.

Oh. Oh wait. Noooooope. Nope. Jaemin shook his head a bit at the next question, letting the blanket drop from his face but not unwrapping himself. It was nice and cozy in his little blanket burrito.

"Doing experiments and stuff in a little tiny part of Mars might be okay..." a little plant plot, you know? "But turrfur-" waaaaaait for it, he'd get there "-er, terr-a-forming Mars might hurt it... we don't know how all its stuff works, right? If we change stuff for humans, it might throw off the um... the system thingy. It's not like Earth, and we know how Earth works but we still messed it all up."

Poor Earth.

"Sure why not? As long as there aren't aliens living there, why not?" But Kitty had another question for Professor Flamsteed. "Is it possible to terra form Mars? I mean, is that something the Ministry of Magic is thinking about doing?" Also, did the Ministry of Magic ever send spaceships out into outer space? Kitty knew the Muggles did it, but she didn't know about the wizarding world.

Cassirin 01-14-2016 04:04 AM

Planetary engineering? Muggle stuff, to be sure, and hard scientific Muggle stuff. Did the professor think they were all Ravenclaws or something? Dot tucked her blanket across her lap now that the classroom was warming up, letting the shiny side distract her from being overly cross with the professor. It was just a conversation topic. He was just doing his best and hadn't yelled at anyone yet.

So she was willing to play along. Dot raised her hand. "What gives us the right to colonize at all? If we can't take care of our own planet, why should we be allowed to go plowing through the galaxy mucking up other planets? Mars isn't broken. It's probably lovely and perfect as it is. All of time and space conspired to make it that dusty, cold, whirlwindy red dot in our sky. I don't think it's very fair of us to think we're better than all of time and space. We can't even compost properly most of the time."

Nodding his head, the professor gave another flick of the wand to banish the horrendous odor that had plagued the classroom until that moment.

"Consider them gone," he chuckled, giving the room another wave of his wand to make it so.

There was no right or wrong answer, he was merely curious what the future generation felt when approached with this topic.

When Airey relaxed the enchantments and took away the freezing cold temperatures, the odor, and the dust devils, Callum was hesitant, but he eventually unwrapped himself from his space blanket cocoon and let it drape over the back of his chair instead. It was nice to be able to breathe clearly again, even though he had gotten slightly accustomed to the smell before, but it was much better this way. He was listening carefully and observing his classmates with his big blue eyes filled with curiosity until one particular statement that came out of Airey's mouth made him freeze.

Not Neptune. Mars.

Mars.

Just like he had speculated.

A smile taking over his features, Callum sat back in his chair, grinning away in a mixture of smugness and satisfaction, and he wanted to SHOUT FROM THE ROOFTOPS of his cleverness - well, no, okay, he did not care for such an outburst, but he wanted the professor to know. Or... well... maybe it had been obvious to everyone else except the one student who thought it was Neptune, but he had identified the simulated atmosphere right, and he was only a first year in his very first astronomy class at Hogwarts! And as much as Callum wanted Airey to know this, the opportunity clearly did not present itself for him to share, so he merely sat in his chair, looking like he might burst from it with elation.

The topic at hand was also an interesting one, but Callum had nothing to offer to it. He was just grinning away puppy-like, looking far too happy with himself and to be in this class. Was this what the whole year was going to be like? Was this what all seven years were going to be like? So much to learn, so much hands-on fun, so much... everything he always dreamed it would be?

He was overwhelmed. There was so much cool science, so many cool discussions going on, and he just... wanted to metaphorically give it all a hug. He loved this. All of this.

He wanted to be in this class always and forever.

Steelsheen 01-14-2016 05:11 AM

Oh so the Astro tower isnt always like this? Well scratch this off the gnarly classroom list.

Tenacius started to ease up as the Professor started making the classroom habitable again. He flipped the pages on his textbook but turned his head up sharply on the word Terraforming. He gave a whoop showing his approval, but then his besties pointed out a few very crucial things.

"I think potatoes can grow on Mars…" he added to what Tory said."So at least we can always have french fries and hash browns." he beamned. "But yeah something about Martian water is funky, other than the fact that its hard to find. But yeah like what Mel said-- how do we know if our magic can work there? Moving stuff around is easy with magic, but have you seen Muggles trying to move a couch? Its hilarious! But what if we're just like that on Mars? We'd be just like the Muggles-- worse even, since we're not used to doing things without magic."

"So, you would argue that 'more leg room' is reason enough?" Airey questioned the boy, his tone uncomfortably neutral.

Surely many many things would have to be tested a number of times and it would likely be a very long time before this could ever happen but why shouldn't it?

"Given a chance," he nodded slowly. Seemed the Slytherin agreed with feeding humanity's curiosity. Intriguing.

"Seeing as we have yet to land on Mars, no astronaut has grown anything on the planet itself," he corrected the first year. "However, plants have been successfully grown, harvested, and consumed in space for quiet some time now. The first officially consumed plants, however, were not until August 2015 as all previous specimens were sent back to Earth for examination. Red romaine lettuce, for the record."

Something to think about when they sat down to their next meal and saw the very same lettuce on their plates. He would see to it that the house elves included it.

Plants on Mars? Wow. She looked to Flamsteed for confirmation or denial on this subject.

"That is certainly one argument," he nodded to the first year. "Future generations."

Isn't Mars' core, like, solid and no longer producing a field strong enough to protect it from the sun's radiation, and that's why its atmosphere burned away so long ago?" How did terraforming fix that?
...

"Precisely," he nodded, with some dramatic pointing...naturally. "That is one of the daunting problems as we as a race do not know how to do that yet. It is theorized that if we were able to liquefy Mars' core then that would then create a magnetosphere in the same manner the Earth's core does by all those liquid metals sloshing around as the planet rotates. So, if you or anyone else has any suggestions for that...be sure to let NASA know. Excellent inquiry, Miss Denaker. Take 3 points."

We can't just go around messing up the ecosystem in any planet we feel like!" she told him. If they were going to have too many people for this Earth to take care of, well, they should make a space station or something. Not just glob onto the next hospitable thing.

That was....an incredibly Hufflepuff answer. Which really should not have FOUND surprising considering that it WAS coming from a Hufflepuff.

And yet he chuckled.

But my twin brother said that the Earth is a perfect place since it's not too far or too close to the sun." Because, if they lived too close to the sun, they're gonna die of melting or burning. The professor was very impressed with the first year's intuition and his brows lifted to form surprised wrinkles across his forehead. "Very impressive, Miss Johanson," he applauded. "Your questions are among those that are still in the theorizing stages of magical astronomers, but there is reason to believe that there is a connection. We already know certain astrological conditions can influence the gathering of ingredients, the brewing of potions or the performance of some magical spells...but we are still trying to piece together why exactly that is and there are many who believe that the magnetosphere to be a key piece of that puzzle. Stellar insight, take 3 points."

"Certainly," he nodded to the young man. Consider them a gift for putting up with the man antics.

The Slytherin's answer, however, elicited an amused chuckle.

"At least for Mars. I saw this really old video, documentary thing that had to be from when you said they went to Mars, and almost all the people died. The water was poison, well not poison, but it turned the people into these space monsters. It was really bad, just touching the water caused people to be monsters. Documentary?

Move down the line of planets and end up on Pluto and actually consider it a planet again? Because Ollie highly doubted Pluto would gladly let them live on it. Plus it was small and cold.

Humanity, as a whole, has been imagining how to create a new Earth as long as we’ve known that ours was dying. The primary debate at present, and one that several of you touched upon in your reflections, is whether or not humanity uses its resources to terraform another planet or to use those resources to fix our own planet. Just some more food for thought as we put this discussion aside for now and move on to something a bit more lively."

And speaking of food - or rather a reminder of a certain food fight from the previous night - it was time to put a bit more fun back into the evening and take a short break from all the scientific talk. The astronomer, while riveting by the topic at hand, could tell that minds were wilting and not quite fully back in an academic setting. His own thoughts quite distracted as well.

Seeing as this is your first evening of classes here at Hogwarts,” he continued, giving his wand a bit of a flick to move his desk and the blackboard out of the way. “...and perhaps still need to burn off all of that nervous energy lingering from yesterday, I have opted to bypass the more technical aspects of terraforming in favor of capitalizing on experiencing what it's like to move around in one third of Earth's gravity felt on Mars with a little game we shall call....Space Globials."

Was that actually a word? Of course not. But there was no turning back now.

With another wave of his wand, the astronomer revealed five platforms floating above their heads that had previously been disillusioned. Thankfully, Miss Kettleburn had not accidentally hit any of them during her premature departure from her seat. In the center was a large platform holding an impressive ball pyramid made from bludger sized balls in white. In each corner of the room were smaller platforms in each house's color bearing its mascot.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...42activity.jpg

"In this game, you will work as a team with your house to collect as many of balls as you can and keep them on your house's designated platform. To do this all you need to do is jump up and grab one from the center and then jump up to place it on your house's platform. The balls have been charmed to change color accordingly as well as stack themselves into a pyramid shape. You may steal balls from other houses as well by passing it to a teammate. But be warned, other houses - including the very one you are stealing from - may intercept your efforts and add to their own collection. When time is called, the house with the most balls in their platform wins."

Get it? Got it? GOOD!

"Now, push your desks off to the side and take your positions," he instructed, giving everyone a few moments to proceed. "Ready? Set. ENGAGE!"

OOC instructions:
  • there is large pyramid of white bludger sized balls in the middle of the classroom resting on a platform.
  • the number of balls is set and I will post informing you all when there are no longer any balls on the central platform.
  • one third gravity means that your character has the potential to jump up to 9 feet in the air depending on how much gusto they put into it.
  • the object is to, initially, leap up to grab one of the bludger sized balls from the platform and bring it back to your house’s platform.
  • balls will turn your house’s color while on your platform
  • you CAN steal balls from other house’s platform to bring back to your own and may begin stealing before the number of balls in the middle has reached 0
    • Stealing requires 1 post taking a ball from another house’s pile and 1 post passing it to a housemate (total of 2 posts minimum; no double posts)
    • Stealing attempts may be interrupted by members of the house under attack. However, the outcome of said blocking attempt may not be RP’d by the defending house. Be realistic with your RPing and remember that no one is invincible.
    • If a housemate catches the pass, the ball is that house’s to keep and add to their platform.
    • Passes may be intercepted. If a pass is intercepted by another house, the ball is that house’s to keep.
  • Please quote and title your posts appropriately. This helps me keep track of how many balls are where as well as helps your fellow RPers figure out what all is going on and where/how to get involved.
    • Taking from the middle (there is no blocking/stealing/passing necessary here!)
    • Stealing Attempt! (ex. Stealing Attempt from [Hogwarts House name])
    • Pass Attempt! the second post required when stealing from another house (ex. Stealing Attempt from [Hogwarts House name]! Pass Attempt!)
    • Defending Attempt! (quote the person you are defending against)
    • Pass Interception! (quote the person you are intercepting a pass from)
    • Catch! (quote the person you are catching a pass from)
  • Please also note that given the high pace energy of RP activities there is always the chance of someone posting the same actions as you intended before you (especially with interceptions). Make sure you preview before you post!
  • This activity will be open for at least 48 hours from the time of this post to give everyone plenty of time to participate
  • Minimum of 5 posts to get full credit. Extra credit possible for outstanding RPing.
  • Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaave fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun!

Please feel free to VM or PM me with any questions or ask them IC to Professor Flamsteed.

LEAPING into action / Taking from the middle

DID HE JUST SAY VERY IMPRESSIVE? Could he tell Professor Draper that she was IMPRESSIVE she hoped he would…maybe THAT would get her into good standing with the Care of Magical Creatures Professor? She hoped Professor Flamsteed would do this…but she wouldn’t ever bring THAT up. Never.

No one knew.

No one at all.

“Thank you Professor,” she grinned and looked over to Tory, Ace, and Mel because she was getting points for their house wasn’t she? SHE was going to get them out of this deficit with her SKILL. Mel was ready for this assignment when it was given.

It was like capture the flag. It was HER game…”good luck” she called out before moving from her desk and folding her blanket up before sticking it into the back of her pocket…maybe she could use it later to hide among the crowd of people and confuse them as she had so many times in games of tag. The little first year began to run toward the pile before jumping into the air and SHE WAS FLOATING THIS WAS SOOOOO UTTERLY AWESOME. She almost missed it as her hands reached out and grabbed onto one of the white balls.

“THIS FEELS AWESOME” she squealed as she finally landed near the Gryffindor platform and placed the ball on the center watching it turn red before running off again.

Interesting?

Was that...a good thing? Or a bad thing?

Esme decided to go with the former; it didn't look like Professor Flamsteed was mocking her or displeased with her answer. It was just a really Hufflepuff thought - but then that was the House she HAD been sorted into. Imagine that.

As she listened to her classmates and the Professor, she continued to take notes. This was the less fun part of lessons, but she did see the importance of it and found that it could be quite interesting when not long-winded. He was making sense again! And talking about the activity! How fun.

Getting up from her seat, Esme pushed her desk and chair off to the side. It was time for her to start helping Hufflepuff claim some white balls. Ravenclaw had an advantage in numbers, but Badgers weren't called hardworking for nothing; even if they didn't WIN they could make this close.

After taking a deep breath, she pumped her legs and gave the biggest jump that she had in her. Shooting up into the sky, she grabbed the first white ball that she could get her hands on. Nobody had better steal it because it was HERS for her House.

She had claimed it.

Reaching the corner of the room with the yellow platform, Esme gave another high jump into the air and brought the ball down, watching as it turned yellow. That's how it's done!

His hand slowly came back down to his desk. Was this a trick question? "...Yes?" he questioned, the energy he had before kinda waning. But, whatever. All the new info was starting to take a toll on his head, and even better...

ACTIVITY.

Looking up, it was difficult to not grin at the site of the platforms and what they were supposed to do. Thanking Merlin he thought to also wear shorts under the skirt today, he scooted back his chair as soon as the professor gave the green light to start the game. BRING IT ON!

With a great push of his legs, his feet wiggled in mid air as he flailed to grab one of the white balls from the pile. H'OKAY, this was a little more awkward than he thought it'd be. Nothing he couldn't get used to though.

Succeeding in snatching one of the balls, his feet wiggled some more until they were back on the ground before jogging towards the Gryffindor platform. Pushing off the ground with another great leap, he stuck the ball as steadily as he could upon the surface, instantly turning it red.

Steal attempt : Hufflepuff

Melbourne Johanson was ready. She was born ready. THIS sporty jumping around in low gravity was what she was made for. It was her calling. Watching the houses get ready to grab their balls from the middle she began to slowly and slinkly prepare for battle.

ARCHERS AT THE READY…well, not archers, more like pawns. Giving a look toward Lancelot she nodded her head to the Hufflepuff pile and made a quick running leap and grabbed at it.

Arista listened attentively as Professor Flamsteed introduced the oddly named activity. All though oddly called it sounded like fun and she couldn't wait to get to bouncing. She folded her blanket and stood up. She winked over at Thomas before she dashed over to where the pile in the air was. She jumped up and she was in the air. She almost forgot to reach her hands out and grab a white ball but just before she started to go down the Gryffindor quickly grabbed one.

Coming back down she tried to make sure she was near the Gryffindor platform. Still having some distance to go before she could jump up and place the ball down, the redhead hurried on over the Gryffindor platform in the air. When she was near it she gave a jump and placed it on top as she was 'falling' back down to the ground she watched the ball turn red. Cool.

Before dashing off to grab another ball she looked around the room and watched the other students. This was fun.

Roselyn 01-14-2016 08:04 AM

Lingering near the platform, he took a moment to look back to see what all the chaos was like and just how he could squeeze himself back into the all the fun without, you know, smashing into anyone. On second thought, maybe he'd stay near the platform. Especially after noticing a Gryffindor give him a look.

OH. OKAY. Cool.

BRING IT!

Charlotte waved cheerfully at her bestie as the professor grabbed her leg and pulled her back down to her seat, but it wasn't very long until, as it turned out, they would ALL be getting to jump up and BASICALLY fly. Honestly, Char barely listened to all the instructions before she was gung ho, on her feet, and laaaunching herself skyward.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Why WOULD they want to change gravity on Mars or wherever if it was like this? This was GREAT!

She landed again before she'd actually made up her mind to do anything in particular, and on her second (or third, technically) launch into the air, she bent her knees and PUSHED FROM THE GROUND AS HARD AS SHE COULD. THAT WAS HOW YOU JUMPED AWESOMELY, EVERYONE. She was basically HURTLING (not really but it was most fun to pretend like she was) towards the middle platform and the pyramid of balls. She grabbed one with both hands and a loud WHOOP and again bent her knees to THRUST up once she landed, this time in the direction of the Gryffindor platform, where she deposited the ball and cackled gleefully when it changed red.

THIS WAS THE BEST ALL CLASSES SHOULD BE LIKE THIS RAAAAAWRRR!

"CALLUM!" She hollered at her little brother. They needed to KETTLEBURN this whole thing!

CLOSER…she was almost there! ALMOST and her hands were on the yellow ball almost as soon as she grabbed it she started to sink down to the ground and gave Lance another nod. The color seemed to instantly drain from the ball...huh, cool.

BREATHE.

One. Two. And she was throwing the ball as HARD as she could maybe he would catch it! She hoped he would catch it! COME ON GRYFFINDOR!

Could he stand on the platform? Like, was that legal? Otherwise, it'd be kinda useless for him to continue jumping up towards the platform waiting for... something. In this case, waiting for the Gryffindor girl to make the move. Mental note, find out her name.

Hold up! Readying his feet and in a squat position with hands up, his tongue stuck out as he watched the ball zoom through the air. Got it got it got it GOT IT GOT-

He snatched the ball out of the air, practically smashing it down on the platform, causing it to turn red with the others.

Another for Gryffindor!

Arista watched as Mel passed the ball to Lance and held her breath if it was her she would totally miss because of the pressure. But thankfully Lance grabbed it and as it was turning red, she let go of her breath.

Now back to the game, she got into jumping position and leaped into the air grabbing another white ball from the platform before dashing off over to the red Gryffindor platform where balls were already piling up. Quickly jumping up once more she placed the white ball up there and watched as it did its transformation over to red.

Errr, what the heck?

Esme rolled her eyes as that Gryffindor girl stole the ball she had earned and claimed it for her House. Whatever. The game had just started and they were already resorting to thievery. Pfft.

Giving another leap into the air, she grabbed a white ball. This time she wasn't going to let someone get their hands on it. She was playing for her House.

With another jump, Esme placed the ball on the platform, where it immediately turned yellow. Now how about those Gryffindors take their own balls from the centre and stop stealing?

So its go for potatoes, but not necessarily for monster water or Time Lords.

Tenacius would've wanted to ask more about the Time Lords but oh oh-- Its game time!

When he started moving around it was then that he really noticed about the gravity difference. "This is soooo cooooool!" he laughed as he did a leap and somersault in the air. Soon enough the game has started and he pushed off towards the center pile, seizing a ball and making for the lion corner. Slam dunk here we come!

2 - taking from the middle. Erm. HI ROSE THIS IS FOR YOU.

"YAY GRYFFINDOR! RAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWR!" Was Professor Flamsteed paying attention to all of her SPIRIT over here because she was definitely letting her Gryffindor flag fly right now. She also honestly wasn't paying the slightest bit of attention to anyone else though. Not even her own housemates. Nope. TOO BUSY GONNA GET THAT BALL FROM THE PYRAMID. She JuUUUMPED and yelled and closed her eyes as she let out a war cry and reached her hand out... reaaached it out.... reaaaa---but she had MISJUDGED!

In fact: BUTT, she had misjudged! Instead of grabbing one of the white balls from the pyramid her hand made contact with the buttOCK of her housemate. Charlotte opened her eyes in surprise because that did not FEEEEEL like one of the white baa... AAAACK!

She pulled her hand away like she had been STUNG. Or.... or.... INFECTED. AAAAARGH! She flailed and fish-faced and stared in horror at the third year even as gravity lifted her up clear of him and high enough to actually grab a ball this time. THIS WAS SO EMBARRASSING. NOBODY SAW, RIGHT? She hugged the ball and dramatically hid her face behind it, peeking over the top.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. THIS WAS THE WORST CLASS EVER.

EVEN SEEING THAT FIRSTIE DO A SOMERSAULT WAS NOT ENOUGH TO DISTRACT HER FROM THE HORROR!

Esme smiled. She was happy to be able to help her House in whatever way she could.

Hufflepuff didn't usually win competitions, and while that didn't BOTHER her, she wanted to help make it a tight race. The only thing lacking was the numbers; they had perseverance in spades. Momentarily she considered starting a chant for her teammates. How would it go though? Would the Professor approve? Or would he find it disruptive?

Maybe she was better off just grabbing more balls...

Esme made a grab for the first white one that she could get her hands on. This whole practically floating thing wouldn't get old. If only she wasn't so short, but in a way it helped her appreciate it more.

Shrugging the thought off, she made the leap to the Hufflepuff platform. Soon there were two yellow balls in her team's possession.

Taking from the middle? why must I adult today when fun things??

oh oh oh. Games were fun, but... Jaemin looked up at the platforms a bit dubiously. Even with the gravity being all weird, would he be able to reach them? The boy unwrapped himself from his blanket as the professor explained things. Maybe... he'd have to see.

The small boy waited until Flamsteed had signaled that the game was to start, then bent his knees and pushed himself off into the air. Up... up... up... he stretched his arms up like a cat reaching for a bird, managing to get juuuuuust high enough to grab one of the white balls. He clutched it to his chest, blinking in surprise that he had actually reached high enough, and when his feet hit the floor again he was bouncing off to the Slytherin platform.

Nyoooooooom.

Throwing his hands in the air (like he just didn't care) in a silent but obvious victory pose, he held it still for a few extra seconds. That was probably THE best steal of the game. Even though it was probably the first steal and there were many more to come, it was still the best.

BUT, there was no time to dwell on victory poses and whatnot, there were still a ton of balls to capture. Feeling good to go to leave the platform, after a quick look around to see if anyone was thinking of stealing, he hopped down to the floor and automatically hopped right back up to the middle platform with perhaps a little too much gusto. Kinda flailing a bit, he half landed on the platform, trying to steady himself-

AND HE STOOD UP STRAIGHT AND TALL.

That. was. his. be. hind.?

His hands squeezed the white ball he managed to obtain as he glanced around to see WHAT HAPPENED WHY. He kinda just... stared... at the second year he presumed was the one that DID THE THING, jaw locked shut and face as red as a tomato. At least he wasn't the only that was horrified from the looks of it.

The beat red lion didn't move for another good few seconds. No one else saw that. For sure. FOR SURE. Right? With less enthusiasm, he hopped on over to the Gryffindor platform, adding yet another ball to their collection.

Might just stay over here for a little bit.

Time to take another leap into the air.

WEEEEEEEEEEE, THIS WAS FUN.

Esme giggled. She wished that she could do this all the time. Maybe she would put springs in her shoes; it wouldn't be the same, but at least she would get some more height. Then she could play basketball even though she wasn't huge on sports. She would much rather wear her tie-dye and peasant skirts while strumming on the guitar. That was what made like worth living.

Grabbing her fourth white ball, Esme made the descent back to earth. It wouldn't last for long though. A moment later she was flying through the air again, placing the ball on her team's platform.

YAY.

He saw the look on that boy's face. He saw the look on that girl's face. He knew those looks. And he'd be doing the sing song tease about sitting in trees but then he didn’t want to be an…. Well that thing that got them looking that way haha.

Besides theres a Hufflepuff possessed filling her house' platform with all those balls.

Sooooo tempting to go after her.

But first, he grabs a white ball and slam dunks it onto the red platform. Score!

HE COULD JUMP HIGH IN THE AIR? WHAT! YESS! :woot:

Henric was going to have fun with this! He didn't think his house could win but oh well...let's just have fun, yeah? Okay, off he leaped! He grabbed one white ball closest to him and went back. He quickly tossed it over to his house platform before anyone could catch it. He watched as his white ball turned to yellow! Nice! One down! Several more to go!

Activity time!

Hady had heard the explanation of the activity and how it was supposed to work. Take a ball from the middle symbol and bring it to her own house symbol. Or take a ball from another players house and pass it to someone in her own house. Rather simple really if one just thought about it.

Glancing upwards at said house symbols one thing was for sure. They were high up. Not high high but still high out of her reach and probably that of many many others. So this was fair so far. As was the whole gravity thing and jumping. Sounded like fun to her really.

Rising to her feet Hadleigh pushed her desk and chair out of the way so it was up against a wall. With everyone already moving about around her it was all a little confusing and she didn't have time to waste figuring out just were in the name of anything good were all the snakes! Oh well then she and whomever else was around could get this done. Light but quick steps felt her feet moving towards the middle and with a push up on her heels she found herself leaping up into the air just high enough to grab herself a white ball from the middle platform.

Having no time to mess about the fifth year just as fast spun on her heel the moment her feet touch floor again and made way for her houses platform. Springing upwards she reached forward and set the ball down onto the Slytherin area watching as it instantly turned green. Yes!

Mel was watching everyone as they ran into the middle. The pyramid was shrinking down and still it was mainly Gryffindor and Hufflepuff in the lead….someone needed to steal that Esme girl’s balls. She was grinning as she saw Lance with his hands in the air and cheering himself and grinned. Giving him a quick thumbs up the short girl ran forward again her body propelling somewhat into the air with each step.

SHE WAS GOING TO WIN THE GAME….well, she wasn’t. Gryffindor was.

Grabbing another white ball from the center of the pyramid…a mistake, the pyramid didn’t look as stable anymore. Okay…now…she could do this. Turning and BOUNDING to near the platform she thrust herself up with as much gusto as she could muster…

TOO MUCH GUSTO way too much gusto. She was sort of floaty-spinning above the platform and NOT in the fun away…after a moment she began to drop and caught the edge of the platform with her hand and carefully placed the ball on the growing pile. The white ball instantly turned crimson as she lowered herself down toward the ground.

Blablablablabla.....

Ava listened to the Professor Flamsteed's explanation whether they should move to Mars or not. And yes of course, her opinion was reasonable. Even though Mars was behind the Earth (and that means it's the fourth closest planet from the sun), nobody knew if Mars had the good sunlight too.

And now they'd move on to the activity time!!!

Listening to the explanation about the activity, she couldn't help but smirked. Yes, she was very familiar with this. It's like a basketball and she's really good with that sport. Once it started, The young lioness grabbed the white ball from the middle and dribbled it quickly until she's closed to the Gryffindor platform. She jumped and shot the ball to the platform. SCORE!! She watched the ball turned into red and that means 1 ball to Gryffindor. Come on, Lions! Ava knew that they're gonna win this game. Totally.

Glancing around the room she couldn’t help but notice that STILL there were sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many more Gryffindors going all out and stealing and doing all of the things. Gryffindors were gryffindoring in the best way. THEY WERE SHOWING FLAMSTEED HOW AWESOME THEY WERE! Yes, yes they were awesome.

This was an UNDISPUTABLE fact. Shifting and facing the pile again Mel just smirked and watched Hady and Jaemin putting their balls on the slytherin platform…she was going to steal those later. BOTH of those. She was going to steal EVERYTHING later.

“YEAH!” She grinned and gave Ava even though she’d never met her an ecstatic grin. THEY WERE WINNING. Winning. So winning. Dodging to the center pyramid Mel took another of the balls and turning dodged toward the platform again and JUMPED up and threw her ball at the Gryffindor platform.

SHE SHOOTS…she SCORES. Gryffindor was owning this.

#1 grabbing from the middle

Astronomy was not a subject for him, not when it was all about space things and science and WHAT-IF questions. His response hadn't really been appreciated and he decided he longer appreciated giving them... but what he definitely couldn't pass up, was an opportunity to burn off some energy.

A game.

Whatever it was called, he couldn't really remember, but he understood the concept. So when the call was given, Zeke sprung into action (as much as one COULD spring considering the lack of gravity thing). Opting to take from the middle first, Zeke pushed off from the ground as he'd come down and rose enough to get a hand to one of the bludger sized balls... but then coming down enough to push off again was an issue... time... patience... this was a test of patience.

When his feet did meet solid ground, he crouched low to give himself enough of a springboard to reach the Gryffindor platform.... and that he did.

Soaring up at a modest pace, Zeke deposited the ball on the platform, remaining high enough to watch as it moved into position and turned red, ready for the pyramid to be formed.

Neat.

Yes! This was the best part of Sir Suits astro classes. Activity time!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Once the rules were out of the way and everyone was in action, she tucked George into her bag and stowed the bag at her desk....then jumped up onto her desk.

For Slytherin! She had been waiting to play with the gravity change so this was perfect. She bounced from her desk up to snatch a ball from the middle platform. Yes, that was a start.

She placed her ball onto her own platform then surveyed the field. Whoa, Gryffindors were crazy, look at those little animals go! She better get a move on, especially after the start of the year, she was even more convinced that Gryffindors were bonkers loose cannons. except for Candice

#2 taking from the middle

Content with taking from the middle, Zeke returned to do just that. There would be plenty of opportunities to do some stealing soon anyway, the game was only just getting started. With Gryffindor finding fine form already, Zeke joined his peers in collecting a ball from the middle and after bracing slightly he jumped in the direction of the Lion's platform, throwing the ball with some precision to the landing.

BAM! Red.

He liked seeing red where these things were concerned.

As if was, this was actually... kinda fun. He might miss the tomfoolery aspect of Astronomy, when he was in fact allowed to drop the subject.

Quickly surveying the surrounding area of the room Hady spotted a fellow snakette standing on her desk to get the job done. Nice work Ilia! At least some of her house had their heads in the game. Which meant it was time to keep keep things moving along.

Even sure footed steps had her rushing towards the middle platform yet again. Pushing herself upwards using her toes Hady easily snatched a ball off the edge of said platform. Before her feet could even hit the floor she was turning her body away and heading towards her own houses platform. Rather then run she jumped flailing her arms and legs through the air like she was running. One more quick bounce and she slammed the white now turned GREEN ball down onto the snakes area watching as it slid itself into place beginning to form their pyramid.

Back at it. Ilia bounded from her green platform, back to the center platform. She almost missed the platform, just making it with the front half of her feet. She hopped a little forward , so that she didn't fall off of the back, and grabbed her next ball.

Ball in hand, she slipped off of the platform and back to the ground. She didn't pause to land however, once her feet began to touch she bent herself into a crouch and sprang herself towards the green platform. She nearly shot herself across it, still having a lot of fun playing with the gravity, but she managed to stay on the platform with a giggle and deposit the ball.

Taking from the Middle- Living his Dream for a moment

So the Movie was based on true events...guess some liberties were taken to make a guy live on Mars then. Hmmppphh bunch of Hollywood Liars.

Torrance listened as carefully as he could to the instructions. Take a Ball from the Middle, Steal from other houses, pass, block....sounded like a new kind of Quidditch without brooms, wait Quidditch without brooms still required flying and with very little gravity holding him back well......

oh oh oh oh oh oh!
OH OH OH OH OH!
OMG NO WAY
Could he? it was the closest he'll ever get to it yet! Torrance shoved his desk aside quickly and just jumped first to test it. He lifted off and started floating.

D-dr-dre-drea-dream-dreams DO COME TRUE!!!!

It was like he was flying (almost). Torrance closed his eyes and extended his arms out. tilting his neck back and looked up. he was closer to the ceiling than he was previously. A single tear of joy trickled down his cheek, but then he started to decend.
No!
NONONONONONONONO
NOOOOOOO

The young lions flailed his arms around in a hectic manner trying to stay as airborne as possible but to no avail. His feet touched the ground once more. He needed this feeling once more! he wiped away the single stream of tear on his cheek and shook his head. He supposed he could still just pretend to fly in here. it was closest he's ever gotten to it without a Broom.

Tory also figured he might as well begin playing for his house. He cracked his neck a bit and squatted low to the ground. Then he jumped and went towards the pyramid of balls. He moved one hand forward and snagged a ball from the pile. Could he at least perhaps Fall with Style? He tucked the ball into his chest and curled up into a ball himself. As he descended Tory thrust his back forward and began to do circles until he hit the ground lightly. He stood from his position on the ground then leaped towards his Houses platform and placed the now red ball onto it.

Post 3 - From the middle

Ilia knew that the biggest source of competition right now would be the lions, but she wasn't quite ready to try stealing from them yet. They needed an attack plan before that could happen. It was hard when your best friend boy friend was also technically your opponent. Where was that boy anyways? Hopefully some of the other snakes would get the idea too and they could make a group effort. For now though.....

She walked off of the platform, allowing herself to 'fall' to the ground with a fairly graceful landing. She eyed the middle platform once more and crouched toward the ground mustering all the strength in her legs to soar as high as she could. Was it necessary? No. Was it fun? Yes.

The sensation of being in the air was always exhilarating, so the lessened gravity was the best thing he could have done this class in her opinion. She tiptoe landed onto the middle platform and snatched another ball. Hopefully she could stockpile a bit at least.

Off the platform she stepped. Once again she used the momentum from falling to rocket herself onto the green platform and deposit her ball with a happy smile. She sort of wished it was free form acrobatics in here rather than a competition.

#1 Take from the middle

WHAAAATTTT!!!! A GAME!!!! Something that involved jumping, stealing, and passing. This was going to be AWESOME. Bella was super excited that she was ready to jump into action, but first she tested the gravity as she bounced two times on both feet, before jumping much higher to see how high she could go. When she came back down her robes got caught under her foot. There was no way she could be free with this thing on and now that the room wasn't cold anymore she didn't need it. She slipped off her robe and placed it onto of her bag, so that was out of the way. Now this little lioness was ready.

JUMP!!!!

Bella jumped toward the middle and grabbed a ball from the middle. Once she had it secured under her arm she jumped back to her house corner and deposited the ball there.

Post 2; takes ball from the middle

Ava was so PUMPED with this activity. Yes, maybe Astronomy wasn't her favorite subject but Professor Flamsteed always had such a fun activity in the end of the class. And also, it's great to see so many Gryffindor firsties enthusiastically participated. Yay, go Gryffindors!!!

She took another white ball from the middle, and made a cool dribble a-la NBA and ran toward the Gryffindor's platform. Maybe she should jump in 3... 2... 1...

And....

JUMP!!

The young lioness jumped up so high and placed the ball to the platform. Another red ball had added to the Gryffindor's platform. Yay!

post 1 - taking from the middle

It was kind of weird when the professor just stood you down and watched when you were talking, not saying anything. Was she right? Tia assumed not, but also assumed she wasn't wrong either but maybe just on a tangent.

And then the activity time. The Gryffindors were all over the center mob of white balls before she had a chance to say or do anything. Her fellow housemates it seemed weren't ready to steal from the red pile. So that left her to take from the middle, because Ravenclaw already were behind, it seemed. Jumping up to see her potential, the seventh year smiled at how little effort she had to put into jumping high.

She did catch young Charlotte over there who seemed totally flustered at her accidental butt grab - something she probably would have been to, had she been her age. But she wasn't concerned about her; the girl was in a different house and if she was too flustered to continuing grabbing from the middle, then it wasn't something to she needed to be concerned with at this moment. After the class, if none of her housemates or the professor didn't calm her down.

For now, Tia squatted down and then jumped reaching high into the air as she felt her hands grip the white ball and watched it turn blue before her her very eyes, as she deposited it into her own house's corner.

One for Ravenclaw. Only like five billion more to go.

Rachel was surprised at Haddie. She hadn't known her friend had such knowledge of Astronomy but was very pleased when Professor Flamsteed awarded her three points. She continued listening to the man, nodding in agreement to the fact that opinions varied.

Then they were moving onto the activity.

She watched with interest as everything was revealed. Wow. Such a creative activity! Were all of the Astronomy classes like this? Rachel quickly followed the instruction of pushing her desk to the side. She was ready to get into action!

The eleven year old made her way over to the pile of while balls in the middle. By the power of King Triton's trident! Was she ever going to be able to leap that high? She was so short... not even five feet as yet. There was only one way to find out. She mustered as much force as she possibly could and pushed herself up.

Close but not good enough.

Rachel tried again, putting more force in this time and was able to grab a hold of one of the balls. Smiling at her accomplishment, she made a beeline for the Ravenclaw corner to deposit the ball.

Wait... did she just... win points? Haddie glanced over at her best friend, impressed with herself. But before she could say anything about that, the Professor was announcing the activity... and...

Yes. Just YES!

Giving Rachel another look, one of pure excitement, the young Ravenclaw bolted over her desk into the game... Wellll, attempted to. She more tripped over her desk and toppled, excitedly though, into the center. And then Haddie was unleashed, bouncing and flying around as if on the world's greatest trampoline... which, this kinda was.

At first, Haddie wasn't exactly playing. She was enjoying the 1/3rd gravity, jumping and bouncing and hopping around the game, over and under the other students. Then, Haddie collided with the Hufflepuff platform and Hey, why not? This was more her anyway. She'll let Rachel get from the middle.

Haddie held onto the platform and grabbed one of the yellow balls off their platform and glanced around for a fellow Ravenclaw to pass to.

llia was on the roll today! Look at her go! Leaping here, there and everwhere! Henric would love to steal one of her balls but he didn't like to ruin her fun at the moment. Maybe later...perhaps?...Heheheh.

Ah hah! Saw you little one!! Not today, nope! "I'm going to ask you to hand that ball to me, if you please, thank you." Henric stood tall, as he waited patiently for the girl to pass the ball to him. If not, he had to intercept it with his long monkey arms.

Post 3: Taking from the middle

With the lack of snakes moving about for this activity at the moment Hady's decision to not steal any of the balls from the other teams was an easy one. It would require her to toss a ball and then one of her own team mates to catch it. She wasn't lacking the ability to do so nor did she believe anyone of her fellow snakes were capable it was just the simple fact of bad timing for the moment.

So it was with a quickened pace that she found herself half running half jumping about across the room towards the middle platform. This lack of gravity thing was rather fun and she couldn't help but laugh at how silly they all must have looked. At least everyone was having a good time and hopefully maybe was learning something.

Reaching out in front of her hand tugged one of the bludger sized balls free from the white pyramid from which it currently rested. Not anymore. Her decent to the floor was slow therefore the small girl had already gotten herself into the habit of pushing downwards with all her weight the moment her toes touched down on solid flooring. Not always was so much force needed but it was great fun sailing through the air.

Another ball for the home of the snakes as she set it down on the platform in their corner. Not a bad start but they really had to get themselves together here if they were to even stand a chance.

2 - Attempting to pass :P

Haddie just grinned at the older Badger. He was much taller than her, so...

Instead of passing right away, she used the Hufflepuff platform to push herself down to the board, below the platform and the Hufflepuff prefect, for now at least and threw the ball. "Someone from Ravenclaw, catch!!"

Haddie glanced back up at the Prefect and grinned before bouncing off toward the Gryffindor platform.

While she was gonna take more balls from the pyramid, Ava noticed Henric was trying to defend Hufflepuff platform because a Ravenclaw first year was stealing a ball from the badgers. She tried not to chuckle because his way was too nice. Hufflepuff problem, maybe? Hehehe...

And... Oh, look! That Ravenclaw girl didn't want to give it up. Of course she wouldn't! Watching that girl passed the ball to her fellow eagles, the young lioness decided to intercept the pass. She made a jump and caught the ball. Yay! But she didn't want to be very excited. "Nice pass, though." Smirking, she jumped back to the Gryffindor platform and put the ball there. The yellow ball had turned red now...

Post 3: Stealing from Gryffindor!

Haddie was not thrilled to watch the Gryffindor intercept the pass, but since she was already on her way to steal from Gryffindor... Shrug.

She'd just grab two balls this time!

Haddie bounced up to the Gryffindor platform after the interceptor and snatched the same ball just as it finished turning red. And then a second for good measure. "Thanks," she said, but was already dropping down from the platform. She wasn't dumb enough to hang around for the Gryffindor girl to try to take them immediately like the Hufflepuff had. That and she didn't have any hands left to hold onto the platform with. "Bye!"

Post 4 - From the middle

The scene was starting to get more interesting as she watched the other students. So many little firsties bopping around, it was sort of funny to watch some of them. Oh, there was one trying to steal from Henric..........was he really just asking for her to give it back? Oh honey....don't you realize that you are five times their size? His sweet Puffness got the best of him it seemed. It was a perfect attitude and part of why she loved him............but it was exactly NOT what you did in competitions.

Being separate houses, she couldn't really help him so instead she focused on claiming more for her own. At least Hady was on the ball like she was. Come on snakes, get yourselves together. Two girls, as awesome as they both might be, were not enough to repel the potential onslaught that was Gryffindor and the threat of Ravenclaws.

Ilia built up all of the momentum that she could in her long legs and flew into the air with a forward flip. It served no true function, other than she wanted to but....she could have fun AND try to win, right? Although, the flip ended up in more of a roll and she not as gracefully came a bit too close to the ball pyramid. Her trajectory was off and she crashed into the balls...............

Slightly embarrassed her cheeks were pink as she took one of the white orbs and threw it onto her own platform. It was certainly more graceful than her landing as it turned green and joined the others. Oops....She looked back to where she crashed to see the state of the other balls.

Ravenclaw girl had some moves too! "Hey no fair! he laughed as he watched the ball pass from below him. But the ball got intercepted by none other than Ava, of course. "AVA! Put the ball back here!" Oh no! Too late his house yellow ball now turned red!

He was so going to steal one from her house now! He bounced to the Gryffindor house platform."I'm going to take this if you don't mind," he chuckled before skipping high to the sky back to to his Hufflepuff house platform. Almost there my preciouss red ball! You will love your new house family there! Hang on,buddy!

What the....

Did that girl just take two balls? Could they? She didn't remember if they could steal two balls in one time.

And now Henric was stealing one from the Gryffindors too! "YOU CANNOT DO THAT, NICOLEI!" She bounced up and tried to interrupt the stealing. This wouldn't be that hard because she often played basketball against the Hufflepuff prefect. Okay, maybe she had lost before but... THIS IS WAR!

"I'm sorry, Giraffe!" Ava successfully stole the ball back from Henric's hand and bounced back to the Gryffindor's platform. She placed back the ball and it's still red, the color. Hehehe.

Post 4 - attempting to pass ball 1

With two balls she could now try out different tactics. The first ball she would pass. But not here.

Haddie bounced away from the Gryffindor platform before find one of her fellow Ravenclaw house mates and yelled "Catch!" as she tossed the ball.

The other ball though, she was gonna try to deliver that one herself, so, hopefully, it couldn't be intercepted. Once the first ball was away, sailing through the air, Haddie leaped her way toward the blue Ravenclaw platform.

Catch?

Rachel spun around after dumping a ball in the Ravenclaw pile to see Haddie throwing a ball. Hastily, she weaved her way closer to the ball and yes! She caught it!

"I've got it, Haddie!''

Without wasting anymore time, Rachel made her way over to the Ravenclaw pile to place the ball after getting onto the platform. One more ball for the Eagles!

See this was how it was meant to go right there. Even though Ilia crashed into the platform, girl got right back up and kept things moving. Hady grinning at her knowing she wasn't at all hurt. Hopefully. Keeping up with the light footed bouncing, see dancing did come in handy, she kept going. No point in slowing things down when one was doing so well.

A quick glance around the area and to her fellow house mate first. Seemed like all was good for the moment and she had found herself once more right at the center platform. If more of her house were around she'd surely be a bit more daring but for now this would have to do. Small bounce, small bounce, larger bounce brought her up hitting the edge of the platform with her stomach but she managed to grab one of the white balls. No harm done from the occurence Hady spun around and headed for the green.

When she was within a few feet she tossed her ball onto the Slytherin platform watching it change once more to green.

Oh. My. MERLIN.

This was SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS! Ariadne was so super excited about this activity. She'd only had two classes so far, but she could tell Astronomy was going to be one of her favorites. The professor was awesome and so much fun!

She eyed the middle platform full of solid white-colored balls. She jumped high in the air in an attempt to reach it but fell short. She tried a second time and finally made her way up to the platform. She started reaching for a white ball, but at the same time, she kept moving backwards. This was harder than it looked!

Ariadne made a swimming motion in the air until she was back by the platform. She held on to it this time with all her might. Finally, she was able to pluck a white ball off the platform and tuck it under her arms. Then she started the odd, one-armed swimming motion to the Slytherin platform. She frowned when she realized how far away it was. She had to come at the middle from the OTHER side next time.

She pushed with all her might until she was able to make her way to the Slytherin platform and deposit the ball on to it. It turned GREEN! Score another one for the SNAKES!

Post 5 - placing the 2nd ball

Yes! Go Rachel! Haddie's best friend, ladies and germs!

Grinning widely, Haddie bounced over to the Ravenclaw platform, joining her best friend and placed the second red ball into the Ravenclaw platform. The red quickly shifted to a blue color. Awesome!

"Nice catch, bestie!" She patted Rachel on the back, but there was no time to chitchat. There were plenty more balls to steal! And so, Haddie pushed off the platform and bounded over to the Slytherin platform.

Post 3- The Middle! *sings Jimmy Eat World song of the same name*

Rachel proudly surveyed the Ravenclaw platform. So far, they were doing so well. She was even more pleased about hers and Haddie's teamwork. As different as they may be, the girls sure knew how to work together. "Lovely toss, best friend.'' She smiled at the pat then watch Haddie go off again.

No more wasting time here either. Rachel gathered herself to head over to the pile in the middle. She jumped as best as she could which was better than her previous attempt and thus, she soon found herself on the platform. She scooped on ball into her hand. Off she went to the Ravenclaw platform where the ball was deposited.

Post 6 - Stealing from Slytherin!

Haddie came into the Slytherin platform a little too hard, slamming her abdomen against it, painfully. She gasped for breath, not wanting to wait here any length of time. She could recover, after she got the ball.

Snatching a green ball, Haddie let herself drop away from the platform and bounced, a bit less gracefully than usual, towards the Ravenclaw platform. Only Rachel was already there, so she prepared to toss to her BFF.

Rachel was about to descend the Ravenclaw platform but instinct told her to look around. In doing so, she caught sight of Haddie who had another ball in her hand! The dark haired girl smiled broadly. She knew what was coming. Sure enough, her girl best friend tossed the ball at her.

She stretched out her arms waiting to snag the catch. Would she be able to make it two times in a row? Would she? Come on, Haddie! Make the toss.

"Rachel!" Haddie yelled. "Catch!" She tossed the green ball at her friend, confident in her fellow firstie's ability to catch it.

With that out of the way, Haddie bounded her way to the Hufflepuff platform again. This was working out wonderfully!
