When the students and professors arrive at their destination, they are surrounded by what truly looks like a wasteland. Cracked, dusty earth, a dull brown in color, puffs up with dust when anyone steps down on the ground. The shapes of the cracks in the ground resemble a tortoise shell, and all around them...for miles, is nothing. Absolutely nothing. Birds do not fly by, there are no animals in sight, and the dense quiet that surrounds them was truly eerie.
This land, ruined in some way by muggles, was for all intents and purposes a desert. The soil was unusable, if you could call the hard ground soil at all.
It is YOUR job, as a student attending this field trip, to do everything in your power to help this land get healthy again! The plants grafted in Herbology from before Christmas are off to the side, just waiting to be planted. A small tent is located next to the potted trees, and inside this tent is a box of supplies that Professor Flamsteed procured for some good ole’ fashioned soil analysis! Professor Moxley has provided some muggle tools to help with the planting stuff as well! So enjoy your LOVELY uniforms...and let’s get to work! Professor Myers has some topical potions to prevent sunburn! So get your potion and let’s gooooo!
the above map is for OOC reference only.
It is meant to serve as a guide to help you RP tasks appropriately.
landing site and tents with supplies are located on the edge of the map at the bottom blue areas indicate not enough nitrogen yellow areas indicate too much nitrogen red areas indicate not enough carbon brown areas are useable soil
☼ Tasks ☼
Soil Analysis
SPOILER!!: Steps
Located inside the tent you will find the following materials to be used for soil analysis: vials of identifying solution (presently clear will turn colors), plastic beakers, trowels, and small jars of powdered carbon. To perform a complete soil analysis you must perform the following steps:
collect a trowel full of dirt and add to a beaker
pour 1 cup of the solution into the beaker with the dirt and swirl it around 5 times clockwise
point your wand at the mixture and say “Cibus Revelio” (solution will turn colors to indicate what that particular area needs most). The area has been sealed off and approved by the Ministry for underage wizards to perform magic.
based on the color change, administer appropriate restoration effort
blue : plant a grafted plant (see directions below)
yellow : plant cabbage saplings (see directions below)
red : mix one tablespoon powdered carbon in with the soil sample and massage the solution back into the ground with your hands.
brown/remains unchanged: nothing needs done
overlapping colors
: at the digression of the RPer
A minimum of 4 posts is required for this activity (preferably 2 posts in 2 different areas of the map)
Planting the Grafted Trees
SPOILER!!: Steps
The trees the grafted from the beginning of term are in a clump located on the right. This task requires a few steps in order to be considered completed. No magic is to be used during this portion. Use shovels, wear gloves, and keep hydrated as your work! These are still relatively small trees, but not as baby as they were in the beginning of term. Keep in the mind the grafted trees should only be planted where the ground is in need of NITROGEN [blue areas].The steps are as followed:
Digging hole (with shovel)
Unpotting tree
Placing tree in ground
Recovering with dirt (with shovel)
Watering the tree once it’s in the ground
Have fun with this and interact with each other! Minimum of 2 posts required!
Planting Cabbage
SPOILER!!: Steps
On the opposite side of where the trees are located are a whole plow of cabbage saplings waiting to be planted in the ground! The cabbages are for ground where nitrogen is too rich because cabbages help reduce nitrogen in soil. Planting these plants is pretty similar planting the trees with slight differences. There are also some buckets of compost to help the cabbage and soil in these areas [yellow areas]. The cabbages are in biodegradable pots. The steps are as followed:
Digging the hole (using a spade this time, cabbages are little!)
Mix compost into the soil in the hole
Wet the cabbage
Tear the bottom off of biodegradable pot
Place cabbage in the hole
Fill in hole
Water those baby cabbages!
Again, have fun with this! Get messy, interact with each other, ask questions, complain. Minimum of 2 posts required!

Sam hadn't been expecting the feeling of something hooking through her stomach and yanking her backwards, and as a result, landed looking rather green and clutching her tummy. She took a good few moments bent over double to catch her breath and get her land legs back.
BLEURGH.
Floo might be sooty, but it was a WHOLE lot better than that. What a horrible way of travelling.
Regardless, she was here now. Where was Genny at? "Looks like I shoulda thrown up," she said with a grin on her face as she approached her friend scratching up dirt. "Any nutri'nts would be good'uns 'ere. Woulda saved us a job." Because, well, just look at it. There was nothing, not even the tiniest of plants or creatures. Not a single weed.
How exactly were the plants they were planting going to survive long enough to be of any help?
Oh, and hello other person! "Matt, right?" She knew of him from class, but she couldn't remember working with him before. "'m Sam. Nice to meet yeh."

Trowel and beaker as well the vial of solution in hand the fifth year continued to walk. Stopping in an area of dried soil Hady tapped her foot against the ground before shaking her head. Sure the dirt was dry but this wasn't the spot for her. So wanted the perfect spot which meant she kept walking somewhat stomping her feet on the ground.
A few paces more and she could actually hear the soil beneath her feet splitting as she stomped on it. It was horrible and yet it was perfect. Exactly what she had been looking for. Kneeling down she set the beaker and vial a little way aways from her. No point in having it much to close right then where she might accidentally knock it over.
Prodding the dirt with her trowel wasn't to hard. The already cracked and splitting soil easily crumbled apart making it easy to scoop up. Gathering up a trowel full of soil Hady carefully dumped it into her beaker.
The easy part was done.

It really hadn't occurred to Kitty to use magic to copy the instructions on her notebook. And she didn't want to keep going back and forth to the tent, so to proceed she was watching what everyone else was doing (who probably had memorized the steps) and tried to copy them. Nearby her Ariadne had just a spell at the mixture. Kitty pointed her wand at her own mixture and muttered quietly the same words. "Cibus Revelio!"

No?
He wasn't going to be able to get by with just standing around and looking a treat in his uniform? DID ANYONE EVEN NOTICE?! Zeke pouted, shoving his hands into his pockets and casting a glance around. He supposed that he could check out the tent and their supplies or whatever it was that they were supposed to be doing and things...
Boring.
Taking his time he entered the space and started fiddling with the plastic beakers and trowels. Soil analysis huh?... it seemed he had two options. 1) be ignored and bored OR 2) mess with some sampling.
Messing with sampling took the cake.
Taking what he needed, the trowel and beaker for starters, in addition to vials of a solution and a jar of... carbon? Whatever, he had them - and with that much done he returned to the bare wilderness and looked for a patch of cracked dirt. Hmmm... WHICH spot should he chooooose? So many choices see.
It was super dirty here. Like not just... dirty, but the place was literally made of dirt. DIRT WORLD. Dot turned her big blues on favorite professor ever Paul Myers, and maybe even managed a lip wobble for him. Because of reasons.
"I'm not emotionally equipped to deal with this sort of hard labor, sir. I'm allergic to dirt. And also I think I left the stove on." She did him the favor of cuffing his pant legs and sleeves and glitzing up his collars, though, because he needed to look fabulous way out here in the middle of nowhere. If they died, they should die fancy.
Still... "Can we really fix this place? Just with trees and cabbages? That's possible?" She would gladly get a little dirty to make DirtWorld disappear, especially after Moxley's lesson on making the world better, but it seemed like a really impossible dream. Dot scooped up one of the trowels and filled it with the soil at her feet. Like... look. This dirt was just... dirty."
Paul waited to respond to Dot until AFTER he was dolled up to look just as fancy as she did. He beamed at her. "Thank you, Dot!" Much appreciated. He glanced around to make sure people were at least making it over okay. Airey's group seemed to be here--Moxley's--good good! Safe and sound!
He KNEW Dot would be displeased with the dirt. "I am sure you can handle this just FINE, Miss Wojack-Gusey. I will even HELP you if you so wish." He was willing to help one of his students, especially Dot. "And yes...we can. It won't be a quick fix, mind you...it will take months for these changes to actually occur. But you all are just the...beginning." He smiled. "Look see! you've already begun your soil analysis!" he said as she scooped up some dirt.
"If anyone needs help or has any questions, don't hesitate to ask myself or either of my wonderful colleagues!"

Ariadne just hoped the spell was cast correctly. She guessed she would see in a minute, because if the solution stayed clear, she'd have her answer. While she waited, she looked back at the directions, so she'd be ready when her solution DID change colors. Blue, yellow, brown, or overlapping...that's what she was looking for. She turned her gaze back to the solution, and unless her eyes were playing tricks on her, it DID look like the clearness was starting to change colors.
Pretty soon, she had a beaker of RED solution in her hand.
Ariadne collected a tablespoon of powdered carbon and mixed it in with the soil sample. Once it was a good mix of the two parts, Ariadne began massaging it back into the ground with her hands. She wasn't quite sure what this was doing yet, but at least she had something to go on now.
Kitty watched her mixture eagerly, wondering what color it would turn. She glanced to her right and saw Ariadne's slowly turning red. What did red mean again? Then turning her look back on her own mixture, her eyes widened in delight as it turned blue.

Her stomach rolled just a tad during the trip but it turned into nothing too serious as she came out of the portkey transportation. However Olivia coughed as she landed, the dust brought up into the air by the weight of her feet, however slight, catching her by surprise. It was as she recovered that she got a good look at their new location, its environment quite desolate and empty. Not even another sound besides the professors and students around her in such a large open area.
Where was this place?
And what all from their previous list had been the reason where they were was like it was? It was a desert…worse than a desert. Would they even be able to fully help? Even with all the magic in the world?
All Olivia knew was it was going to take a LOT of work. So she and the rest had to get started, the first year finally moving from the drop off point further infield. She didn’t feel the need to protect from sunburn since the suits covered fair enough. Instead she headed into the tent to see what was what, following in the footsteps of some of the others. Soil analysis seemed to be first and foremost, so after slipping on her work gloves, the Ravenclaw retrieved an empty beaker, a trowel and a vial of clear liquid that was needed according to the instructions before heading out. Her wandering feet heading out to one of the further points of the area to her left.
Katherine wasn't that pathetic to actually look for a professor's approval, because she knew they approved of her (like, she even had TEA with THE Headmistress, so) Therefore, she just went on with the task. The next step was adding the potion, swirling, performing the spell and finding out what this soil needed. Therefore, she made sure the beaker was secure between her legs again and literally observed her watch to make ABSOLUTELY sure what was clockwise. She even mimicked the motion with her free hand. COuldn't mess up, y'know? After she was satisfied, she carefully added the potion - one cup, precisely. Then, with the expression of utmost concentration, she swirled it around five times clockwise.
Phewwwwwww.
Once that was done, she got her wand out and directed it at the mixture. "Cibus revelio," she said and held her breath. What if it didn't -
BLUE.
Oh, yay! Her grafted plant would not go to waste, then! She carefully cleaned the beaker with magic and very caaaaaaarefully balanced it on the trowel.
Still couldn't afford to put it on the soil, y'know.

"Dat me!" Matt grinned at the Ravenclaw girl that was hanging out with Genny. "Cool. Nice to meet yeh TOO." He said sort of copying her accent.
He stopped shaking the mixture. "I think it's ready." Matt pulled out his wand and pointed it at the thing inside the beaker. "Cibus-" Wha? "Cibus Revelio." Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhhhh?
The mixture did start changing colours, alright, which meant it had WORKED! ...But what colour was THAT?
...
Was Matt colour blind?
What was going OOONNNN with that mixture? What, it couldn't decide what colour it wanted to be or sumtin? "Right, I dunno what's going on." He declared to the two girls he was working with.

....Aaaaaaand down they land.
It was a good thing that his HoH had a perfect landing, because Tenacius' landing with portkeys was only as good as the person he's travelling with. And he's only ever travelled with his new Mom. His dad had grown a distaste for it and would much rather use something else-- anything else-- that didn’t make him look like he went through the spin cycle of a washing machine.
But now theyre here and the first thing that greeted Tenacius was that super bright sun and the super bright ground and the clear blue sky that stretched to forever. Reminded him a whole lot of Santorini... Except the ground was cracked soil. He squinted his eyes and turned around. "Are we on Jakku... Or or TATOOINE??!?" NASA uniform plus dessert environment equals planet on the outer rim territories right? Its gotta be.
But that’s the thing with dessert planets.... Sunburn is practically a guarantee.
He could hear Professor Myers yelling out that he had potion for the skin. Give him summa daaaaaat.

Swirl, swirl, swirl..
There!!
Five swirls in a clockwise direction. Okay! Azura peered at her beaker making sure everything looked mixed up.. It was still an awful brown color but at least it looked fully coated!
All right!
She set the beaker on the ground in the slight shade that her body was making, to keep it cool and then took out her wand and pointed it at the beaker. "Cibus Revelio!"
She watched as the mixture slowly turned..
Redddd!
Got it!
She took the carbon out of its bottle, mixed a tablespoon in with her soil sample and then dumped everything out and slowly massaged it into the ground!
Right.. Well.. That looked good enough.. Right??
Azura eyed the ground.. Uhh.. Would just massaging carbon back into the ground really help? Who knew really.. She would ask later! For now! Onto another site!!

In spite of the professor's reassurance, Dot wasn't convinced. Even as she dumped her trowel of dirt into the proffered beaker and added the solution, mixing them together with a swirl, she didn't hold out high hopes. They could all work all day today, but they wouldn't know one way or another if anything had improved here.
And it would take months... years!
"Cibus Revelio," she cast the incantation on the beaker, and then turned her attention back on the professor. "Some things are broken and cannot be fixed, sir, and to believe otherwise makes us careless. If you think you can fix things, maybe you don't mind breaking it in the first place. Even if we make some difference here, we've already lost so much that can't be retrieved." Not to be maudlin or anything, but...

Moxley had landed as gracefully as ever and she adjusted her cap so that the brim provided her face some shade from the sun. She went as far as to use some sun cream, too, JUST in case said brim wasn't enough. Her skin was delicate and still looking flawless and SHE was going to keep it that way, thank you very much.
At Paul's announcement, Moxley nodded enthusiastically and gave a double thumbs up as she spun in a circle, wanting EACH kiddo to see that she was in support of lending a hand. "Teamwork makes the dream work!" She was pretty sure she saw that on a muggle bumper sticker somewhere. Lovely things-bumper stickers. Could show someone what kind of person you were in the time it took for a muggle stop light to turn from red to green.
Jaemin was officially sure that he wasn't fond of any of the types of magical transportation now. Brooms didn't like him, apparition made him feel queasy, and now portkeys... it felt like something had tucked a string inside of his tummy, pulled it through his bellybutton, and had given it a nice, solid jerk. Noooo fun. He also felt a way about how hard and sudden his feet hit the ground, and he blinked rapidly for a good minute after they'd landed, still clutching onto the shoe with one hand and Paul's sleeve with the other. IT WAS WEIRD.
The terrain around them was certainly a good distraction, though. After a good minute of trying to get his faculties back in order, the small Slytherin gave the new world around him a curious look; another minute, and he'd been detached from Paul's arm and started wandering. He sorta vaguely listened to the buzzing of voices as people talked, and professors talked, and everyone talked, but he was more interested in why the ground looked the way it did. He squatted down and pressed a hand to the surface, frowning a little at how solid and packed down it seemed, and ran a finger along the shallow insides of one of the cracks.
It was all dry and dead and empty. How sad...
It wasn't difficult to get a handle on what they were to be doing. Soil analysis wasn't anything Jaemin had done personally before, but his dad did lots of it as a Herbologist and he knew the general idea of it. Doing it himself was gonna be so exciting! He abandoned his sad little dirt plot and bounced into the tent to snatch up a whoooooole bunch of stuff to work with before taking off and putting himself a good bit away from everyone else.
This was like gardening. And his mom said that gardening was something that was really nice to do alone. So the small boy squatted down again, very carefully dug up some hard-baked earth to tip into the beaker, and added the solution stuff on top. Aaaaaaaaand swirl.
Made of Awesome | Ern-la the Best-wa | TZ's Apogee
Although there was plenty of ground to cover, Dot wasn't sure why she'd move on when she'd already found a patch of earth that needed her attention. She hadn't even had to lift a foot across the dirty ground and she'd found a place to make a difference. Plus her shoes were still generally spotless.
For now. But in the few feet to retrieve one of the grafted saplings, Dot's shoes took on that dusty patina that meant work and filth and future mud. Not a bad thing, as long as there was a long bath in her future. Dot grabbed one of the trees carefully and trekked back to the spot where she'd just tested the soil.
It was a shame they weren't allowed to use magic here, since this digging business would be SO much easier with a wand instead of a shovel. Dot broke the earth with the tip of the shovel and made a hole for the potted tree. Was it big enough? Was it way too wide? She tipped some soil back into the hole before turning her attention to the potted tree.
After completely ruining her suit, which earned her a pained look from the professor, Elsa knelt down a few meter away from the first spot, in a different area. She repeated the process to analyze the ground, repeating mentally "collect dirt, add to beaker, pour solution swirl it around 5 times clockwise". This time the solution turned blue to her surprise. Blue, what was that again? She pulled her notebook in order to read the instructions related to.... planting a a grafted plant! Oh this will be interesting...
She looked at the area where the grafted plants were stored. They weren't fully grown trees but still they were big enough to be a challenge. She pulled herself up, dusting off - without success - her knees, pulled her gloves on - why didn't she remember that before - and picked one of the trees. She then tried to pick it up but given it's height, the task ended up being quite difficult. Balance it while carrying to the area she was working on wasn't going to be a peach, and she could already feel the sweat beads wash some of the sunburn potion from her skin. She cleaned her forehead with the back of her hand and looked around.
"Can anyone help me move this plant over there?" she hopefully "Please, pretty please with sugar on top?"

With the first soil analysis out of the way, Ariadne conducted a second test, which turned the solution blue. So this part of the land needed nitrogen. It was weird how one portion of the land can have too much of what the very portion next to it needed the most.
Ariadne checked to make sure her gloves were secured on her hands, and then she began to gather materials. The entire process had to be done the Muggle way, too, but it really didn't seem that hard. Ariadne started with a shovel and began digging a hole in the ground. How big did the hole have to be anyway?
She stopped digging and turned to look at the grafted trees. Wow. They'd gotten bigger. She got a fairly good idea of how big the hole needed to be then turned back to her shovel. She started digging again and pretty soon had a good sized hole. She selected a grafted tree and brought it toward the area she planned to plant it in. She was kind of nervous about unpotting it, but she thought she could manage it.
Ariadne dug around the inside edge of the pot, making sure not to tear any of the roots. When that dirt was out the pot, she could easily see the roots and was able to lift the plant from the pot. MMKAY, THEN. That was kind of easy. Hopefully it was still alive and all...
Made of Awesome | Ern-la the Best-wa | TZ's Apogee
The unpotted tree fit perfectly into the hole Dot had dug, and she knelt beside the hole to unbind the roots and stabilize it with some lightly packed dirt. It was quite the healthy looking tree, and Dot had high hopes it would manage to survive in this harsh landscape. Maybe, in a few years, when it was tall and strong, and the soil underneath was healthy, there'd be grass and water here, and someone would sit under this tree and find a happy, beautiful place.
That was a nice dream.
It only took a few shovels of dirt to refill the hole and smooth out the ground around it, and Dot was careful not to pack it too tightly. Those roots didn't need smothering. She didn't want to be the reason her healthy little tree didn't do well.
"Aguamenti," she stood and cast the spell, moistening the dirt she'd turned all the way around the tree. At least it had one last very good drink before she had to go.

Azura trudged away from her spot to a farther away spot.. She seemed all alone in this little piece of land.. It felt a little lonely actually, and she wished Jace were here..
She stood looking around for a few moments before kneeing down and again creating some shade with her body on the barren land below.. That should help things not boil!
She scooped up some of the dry dirt and then put it in her plastic beaker..
She carefully measured out some of the clear solution into the beaker and then..

From where she was kneeling down in a patch of dry soil she was able to see that she was alone in this little area. She didn't mind it much really seeing as there was a lot of room to be worked on but she was open to someone joining her if they wanted to.
With a trowel full or dirt now in the beaker she carefully measured out one cup worths of the solution from the vial and added it into the beaker. Holding the beaker up to peer at it all she saw was what looked like muddy water to her. With a small shrug of her shoulders she gently began to swirl the beaker around in her hand in a clockwise moment.
Once. Twice. Three. Four. And five times.
She was almost finished now. Taking her wand out from inside her workers jumper that she had one for the day she pointed it directly at the beaker which she had now set down on the ground before her feet. "Cibus Revelio," Hady cast firmly hoping it worked as it was supposed.

Seeing as no answered her, and she couldn't handle the burning sun much longer if she just stayed there, boiling her skin off, Elsa grabbed the plant as firmly as she could, pulling it along with her to the area she was working on.
When the walk was done, she could see some of her friends not far away working away in their own areas. She sighed and pulled the hair from her forehead back with he back of her hand once again, leaving muddy marks that resembled war paintings.
She then browsed through her tools until she found the shovel and began digging a hole. They couldn't use magic for this part, which was a bummer but Elsa would totally be cool with it if it wasn't for the insufferable heat! After digging half way through, she stopped, sitting on her bum, and drank some water.
She resumed the task at hand and began unpotting the tree carefully. If one looked at her now, one could see a big smudge of dirt on her bum, muddy hand prints on the front of her suit's legs, and her face all dirtied up too.
Elsa grunted with the effort, taking another moment to sit and breath, opening the zip of her suit a little to allow some air - what air?! - to lower, or so she hoped, the increasing temperature inside the suit. Plus, she was pretty sure the sunburn potion was coming of with the sweat trickling down her forehead. In fact, even though she couldn't see, there were red patches forming on her cheeks and nose.
"This should be done in pairs..."she murmured as took another gulp of water and watched Hady perform the soil analysis spell nearby "Pray to Merlin it's not blue or yellow, other wise you're in for a pickle" she said, raising her voice a little so her Slytherin friend could hear her.

So, Matt liked her accent then? She returned the grin, before turning her attention to what he was doing with the beaker. She must have missed the explanation part whilst she'd been recovering from that horrendous journey.
Soil tests she could totally do though.
"Yeh sure you did it right?" Like, what WAS that colour? She assumed he had done it correctly, but she thought was the test meant to be helpful in showing them what the soil MOST needed. Did it need ALL the things? None of them?
"'ow about I do a second test, 'n' we see if I get the same result?"
...and if that didn't work, maybe they quietly side step to somewhere where the test DID produce a colour?

Ariadne looked at her plant for a few more seconds, half expecting it to just droop over and die. When it didn't, she was still pleasantly surprised. Okay, then. Off to the next step, she guessed.
Ariadne carefully grabbed the plant by the strongest part of its branch and carried it toward the hole she'd just dug. Very carefully, she centered it inside the hole. She started to back away to get the shovel, and the tree swayed. UHHHHHHH...was that supposed to happen? Ariadne grabbed the plant by the branch again and re-centered again.
...
...
...and there it stood. AWESOME.
Ariadne breathed a sigh of relief then grabbed the shovel. She shoveled the dirt around the plant to secure it into place. She started to use her wand to water the plant but remembered they weren't supposed to use magic during this part. Okay, then--a watering can it was! Ariadne collected a watering can (which was already filled with water) and brought it back to her plant. She then gave it a good shower before putting all her materials away.

Janelle landed with a thud, stumbling forward for a moment before she caught herself. Man, she really hated traveling by portkey. Once she had recovered, she looked around with a frown. They were supposed to rehabilitate this place. Really? This looked like a mess that even magic might not be able to undo. They really had their work cut out for them.
Looking for a bright side to this overwhelming activity, Janelle smiled when she saw the grafted plants. They were going to get to plant them after all. It was good to know that their work was actually going result in something helpful. Looking at everything that they had to do, Janelle knew that she'd better get to work. This was not going to be as easy as fixing up Headmistress Moxley's abandoned lot, but it wasn't going to get any better with her standing still. First up, soil analysis.
