Default Arithmancy Lesson 2

Unusually, Professor Tanner is standing in the corridor awaiting your arrival. She smiles and greets you, eager student that you are. As you step into the Arithmancy classroom-

Wait. Is this the Arithmancy classroom?

You appear to have entered a giant arena. Large wooden obstacles are whirring about at seemingly random intervals in likewise random paths. Metal grate platforms and towers are spaced in strategic locations. Pits filled with mud, areas of dense fog, passages in complete darkness, and many other dangers lurk.

Enter if you dare.

Esme smiled at Professor Tanner as she told her that she had done a good job. This had been easy math so of course there hadn't been any problems, but it was always nice to hear praise. So long as they didn't move on to doing anything complicated with numbers she would be fine. If things got too hard she could always ask Teddy for help.

On a new page in her notebook she began working on the next activity:

FOUR (4): Try to have perspective and a more lighthearted attitude toward emotionally-charged issues. Control your anger. Discipline is your strength. Also, look at the larger picture and the need for compromise. Your sense of justice must be elevated to another level where such virtues as forgiveness, compassion, and deep understanding are the guiding lights. A practical approach to these ideals is to try to put yourself in the shoes of the person with whom you are in conflict. There are always more angles to a problem than you tend to acknowledge.

My Interpretation: When faced with a problem, it is best to approach it in a calm and level-headed way as opposed to with anger. It is important to focus on the big picture and be willing to compromise with others; a way to do this is to put yourself in the mind of others because that leads to perspectives that you never would have imagined otherwise.

Listening to the Professor's explanation about her balance number makes Ava understand it more. Sometimes she found the textbook's words are kinda difficult. So that means that she needed to focus on her perspective, but putting herself in someone else's shoes? This was still confusing. "Do you really need think that I need to put myself in someone else's shoes?" Perhaps her father? But she kinda agreed with control her anger, need more discipline and self control kind of thing.

But then, there was another assignment to do... The young lioness then dipped her quill to the ink and started writing about the Headmistress balance number.

Oh, look!!! Headmistress Moxley has a same balance number as her! Well this was interesting.

"Since the Headmistress and I has a same balance number, does this mean we share some similar traits?" She curiously asked. She tried to put the interpretation of her balance number.

Quote:
Interpretation: in order to be a good leader, I think headmistress Moxley needs to be more disciplined and control herself. Also, she is already a good leader since she is very compassionate about her field.

Well... he didn't know what was on his birth certificate. He didn't even know if his birth certificate was in English. Surely it had to be, if he was born here, but... you know. Who knew. Jaemin nodded slowly and sat down cross-legged on the ground, writing all the versions of his name.

The way his name was supposed to be written, with the hangul, seemed like the best bet overall. And with that one, he had three initials, since his name was only three characters long. So he'd add up all three! He flipped open his book, humming to himself as he found each number on the chart. Two ones and a four... which made him a six. He ran a finger down the page until he found the right one, and read it over a few times.

Text Cut: six
SIX (6): Your strength lies with understanding people and the underlying conditions of a conflict. But you can rely too heavily on friends and family to provide you solace instead of handling the situation directly and responsibly. You may be too likely to retreat to the good feelings provided by people not involved in your situation. Responsibility is the issue here. You helped create the situation in the first place, and are an essential part of the solution. Accept your role.

...maybe it wasn't that one. With just the two letters, it equaled out to two... so Jaemin slid his finger back up, to read that one instead.

Text Cut: two
TWO (2): Use tact and diplomacy. Be less emotional. Be courageous in your approach to the solution you seek, rather than backing away from problem because you fear confrontation. Work hard to diffuse tension; your innate talent is to find a mutually satisfying solution to all. You are willing to compromise. Be more optimistic and lighthearted. Try not to blow problems out of proportion. You are overly sensitive and have to work to be more balanced. Balance and harmony are there for you the minute you apply yourself to any problem. You can be the peacemaker.

... what the heck?

"I don't think either of these fit me," he said, sounding a bit grumpy. This numbers thing... sometimes it was just plain wrong, or at least he felt it was. He wasn't overly sensitive... and he didn't try to avoid things. At least he didn't think he did.

He'd give that more thought later, maybe. Hmmn.

Class was already over? But they'd only gotten here like fifteen seconds ago! The little boy lifted his head up to look at the professor, a bit surprised. Time had passed kinda fast today. He just had to add up Headmistress Moxley's number, and then interpret it, reaaaaally quickly.

Her initials were easy to find and add up. A 4, a 5, and a 4 again, which made 13; 13 wasn't one of the special ones, so it reduced to 4 again... What kind of name was 'Noel'??

Text Cut: four

He squinted at the paragraph for a long moment before signing his name on the bottom. It wasn't like he'd said anything bad, right?

The next student she came to also had an uncertain look on her face. "Is something wrong, Miss Mancini?" Perhaps she was sour over not getting extra credit points for staying alive in the arena.

At that point, Tiara glanced down at her watch. Goodness, they were almost out of time! "Well, I guess we had better wrap up! Last thing: just to cement the process in your minds, I want you to grab out a fresh sheet of parchment. Calculate the Balance Number for our illustrious Headmistress, Meredith Noel Moxley. Then, using your textbook, I would like you to write a few sentences of suggestions for how she can better deal with the pressures of leading our great school."

And the catch. "And yes, I will be delivering these to her to prove how much you all are learning! So best not to put your name on it unless you're nice," she finished with a wink.
When the Professor stopped at her desk to look over her work, Tia forced a smile when Tanner asked if something was wrong. "Not really. It's just, reading the textbook interpretation, well there's not a whole lot I can say." Draw strength from insight from others.... "I mean, well, I like being in control. Doing things myself. By myself." Though she knew she should take the insights and guidance from her professors, somehow drawing her own conclusions about her life just felt better and more right.

After a few more moments of reflection, Tanner was wrapping it up. Well she supposed the initial activity in the lesson had taken up quite a bit of lesson time. Calculate balance number for their headmistress, whom had two of the same initials that Tia had. Pulling out a fresh sheet of parchment, Tia dated it but didn't write her name yet. Though it didn't particularly matter how brutal or nice she was, given that she was a seventh year and in a couple months she'd be gone from Hogwarts forever. However she did want a decent recommendation for University and beyond....

Interpretation: Channel your inner Hufflepuff, when dealing with the conflicts and stresses that arise at Hogwarts. Hufflepuffs are known for being fair and just, looking at all sides of the picture before making a decision. Looking at situations from the Hufflepuff side of things should help you in leading this fine institution in a compassionate and just manner, as opposed to acknowledging just what you see first, you'll see a multitude of angles and perspectives.

Reading it over, Tia decided there wasn't anything 'bad' in her interpretation, thus she added her name to the top corner.

Olivia looked up as Professor Tanner came up to her as part of her rounds checking on everyone’s work, nodding at the admittance the woman gave upon reading her balance number. “Yeah we are.” She might just have to keep an eye on the professor more, seeing if there were hints on behavior that might prove helpful in her own life. It wouldn’t cause any harm to be open-minded on the matter and might be a benefit in the long run. It already was given the compliment that passed Tanner’s lips to her because of her observation.

“Thanks,” she answered with a smile. It was nice to be called smart occasionally outside the whole view on Ravenclaws.

As for the last assignment, the Ravenclaw got out said clean piece of parchment. No personal name at the top just in case, but she did put the full name they were supplied with. Meredith Noel Moxley. A nice name, especially her middle. That written down she switched between the two chapters in the textbook previously used and began her work, copying it all neatly on the parchment.

Now she had to give her own thoughts and Olivia was unsure what to say. It wasn’t like she had known the woman long or was close to the professor/headmistress. And she did seem to have the lighthearted stuff already. At least no one would know who it was writing. Nevertheless, the first year thought long and hard before finally giving in and scribbling stuff down on her parchment of work.

SPOILER!!: Thoughts

- Be mindful of all sides of a situation
- Do not be quick to judge by what you see at first.

Hmm. Okay, well, apparently there was some mistake in their textbook, which prompted Ariadne to give a thoughtful expression and then a nod toward the professor. It looked like class was ending, but first, an interpretation for the Headmistress herself!

Ariadne pulled out a fresh piece of parchment, because she doubted Moxley wanted the one she'd taken all her notes on.

M N M

4 + 5 + 4 = 13

Book Meaning :: Try to have perspective and a more lighthearted attitude toward emotionally-charged issues. Control your anger. Discipline is your strength. Also, look at the larger picture and the need for compromise. Your sense of justice must be elevated to another level where such virtues as forgiveness, compassion, and deep understanding are the guiding lights. Interpretation :: Hi, Professor Moxley! I know being the Headmistress can be a pretty demanding job. Well, I don't know from experience, but I can just imagine it's not a piece of cake. Here's an interpretation from Aritmency class to help you, though! First of all, it suggests you should not take things too seriously. I know that's hard with weird things always happening around the school, but when you can, try to laugh things off. There are some big words next that I really don't understand, but I think it's saying you should use forgiveness, compassion, and a deep understanding to help you make decisions regarding the school. You seem to be that kind of person anyway, though, in my opinion! Finally, it suggests that in order to resolve things and make better judgements, put yourself in the other person's shoes. I think that might help you make a decision that's best for everybody! Good luck!

Hmm. Ava still seemed unsure a bit. "Well I do not know you very well, but in general I think we can all benefit from considering others' perspectives." And then she wondered about her relation to Meredith. "That is certainly possible. You both have similar reactions to tough situations, or at least need to hear similar advice, so I suppose you could say that," she finished with a nod.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another check of her watch confirmed it. "Okay everyone, just leave your suggestions for Headmistress Moxley on the ground there and I will collect them." Just then the bell rang. "Good work today, everyone. Class dismissed!"
Carl glanced up at Professor Tanner when she announced one more thing to do. He got started quickly, as there was not much time left and he was interested in finding out what Headmistress Moxley's Balance Number was like.
My Interpretation: Hello, Headmistress Moxley! When you are in difficult situations, you should try to be more lighthearted and calm. You should also look at the problem from different angles so that you understand what other people are going through. Overall, I think you are a good leader!
Then, the Badger left his parchment on the ground as instructed and walked up to the Professor. "Bye, Professor Tanner. Thank you for the lesson!" He said and grinned. With that, Carl swung his bag over his shoulder and headed out of the classroom-arena.
He still had to wipe the mud out of his shoes!
