Unusually, Professor Tanner is standing in the corridor awaiting your arrival. She smiles and greets you, eager student that you are. As you step into the Arithmancy classroom-
Wait. Is this the Arithmancy classroom?
You appear to have entered a giant arena. Large wooden obstacles are whirring about at seemingly random intervals in likewise random paths. Metal grate platforms and towers are spaced in strategic locations. Pits filled with mud, areas of dense fog, passages in complete darkness, and many other dangers lurk.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Rachel smiled broadly. She was disappointed about leaving Haddie behind but on the bright side, she was on Professor Tanner's team. "Yes, I do know it,'' she whispered back. She was eager to get started and after Tanner gave her the green light, Rachel tried to find a target, using her ears to aid in tracking down one.

Getting her bearings back, she began another mad dash towards safety. Unfortunately for her it was much more difficult to run to safety when there were objects whizzing past in just about any direction. "OOF!" she exclaimed as she was sent flying forward, almost landing in a mud pit. Fortunately only her palms fell in.
The expression of surprise caught her attention and Rachel pointed her wand in the direction. "Impedimenta," she said in an undertone. What she hadn't realised was that Tanner had sent the spell in that direction too. Oh, no! She hoped the person wasn't hit by both of them.

She smiled and offered a hand to the girl. "The incantation is Impedimenta, in case you don't know it." She checked her watch once more. "We only have a couple of minutes left, so head on out!"
Ariadne was defeated, but she could hear the footsteps of someone closing in on her. She squeezed her eyes shut, secretly wanting to get out of here and end this game. WHO WAS IT?! ... She knew deep down inside that it was only Professor Tanner, but that didn't help her feel any better. She had just gulped when the jinx was lifted, and she heard the professor's voice.
"Team Tanner?" she whispered. "Okay, cool!" She accepted the professor's hand and got back on her feet. "Thanks." With a nod, she headed back into the thick of things, now disguised as a member of Team Tanner.

Yes, Kitty, we saw you head into the dark corridor. Ariadne had always hidden there, too, until she saw another student go there. She couldn't exactly see Kitty right now, but she raised her wand toward the general direction she'd seen the girl go in.

Suddenly Esme found herself unable to move. Clearly she had been caught which meant that the game was up. Oh well, it had been fun while it lasted. Patiently she waited the few seconds it took for the spell to wear off... and then was hit yet again.
"I really don't think that was necessary," she said a few moments later.

SPOILER!!: Professor Tanner
Yes! Well.. she knew she wanted the students to win but.. You know, she was into this, too! "Finite," she said, walking up to the Slytherin. "Now for the twist, you will be joining my team!" She didn't bother asking if the fifth year knew the jinx: she did. "Now spread out quickly, there are only about 3 minutes left."
Just as fast as the jinx had hit her Hady could feel it lifted away. Turning her eyes onto Professor Tanner she welcomed the women with a slight smile. "Awesome casting you got going on Professor," she prided softly. Seriously she had some skills hitting her targets in the dark, fog and around corners.
Listening to what was said to her she nodded in understanding. Wicked! Now she got to help capture the other players. Pulling her wand from her robes she quickly cast the disillusionment charm on herself before taking off as quietly as she could around the side of the tower. Being invisible was a good advantage expect for the fact that you couldn't see yourself and didn't always know when you'd bang into something.
Wand still firmly in hand the fifth year remained as silent as she could doing her best to listen to everything around her. Her goal now being to find someone close to her.

Okay that was not what she was expecting to hear about their latest arithmancy class. But sure enough as Professor Tanner followed them inside and started the lesson in earnest, she was telling them all about the obstacles they were seeing and not seeing. So much for a more thoughtful class rather than more rambunctious activity like most other classes seemed to be choosing to have their respective subjects. Shoot her for being a Ravenclaw and occasionally liking her books more then running around in avoidance of mud and spells aimed at her.
10 minutes without being caught…
Olivia was going to do her best against her now invisible teacher and whatever obstacles she came across her path. They’d see if her luck ran out or held. So when the class was given their heads up and chance to hide, the Ravenclaw slipped further into the classroom to find a good enough place to start out. Her wand was stashed deep in her pocket to avoid the temptation to use it like they weren’t supposed to. And now one…two…three…
Ravenpuff | Cap'n Crunch | Bedtime Queen | O Minion, My Minion
Five.. four.. three.. two.. one.. time was UP!
Wand aloft, Tiara shot several rounds of red sparks into the air. "Alright, that's it!" she called, her voice magically modified. "Everyone back towards the door!" She trooped up there herself, freezing some of the moving obstacles in place as she went.
"Gather around," she motioned as people began to arrive. There was a blackboard in the shadows that she rolled out.

"Over the years I have use this knowledge to temper my reactions. Believe it or not, I was quite hot-headed at your age; discovering my balance number helped me start to mellow out a bit." Once she started in Arithmancy, she had been drawn to this calculation right away. Her life as a gymnast had taught her balance was important, so this number resonated with her deeply.
"Now. I would like you to work out your balance numbers. I assume you all brought your parchment and quills to class?" They hadn't known the activity ahead of time, of course. "The ground is perfectly fine for a desk today. Please calculate your own balance number and interpret according to chapter 24's interpretations."
He'd gotten lucky. The professor's spell had hit the wall about four inches from his face when she'd cast, and he'd bit down hard on his lip to keep from letting out any loud sounds that would announce his position. He had flinched too, but... hoped it hadn't been noisy or made him obvious.
The small first year had stayed curled up in the darkness, listening intently, until the professor's voice had filled the area to announce the end of the activity. It was only then that he'd stood back up to his full 4'4" and slowly, cautiously made his way out of the alley. Frowning a little, he made his way over to the group, and listened intently to what the professor was explaining.
They had to use their initials...? Jaemin squinted at the board before raising his hand, ever so slowly.
"Professor...?" he murmured, biting his lip thoughtfully. "Do... do I use just S and J because Song Jaemin? Or do I use S and J and M because Song Jae Min?"
His initials could go both ways, and he'd never really considered either of them before. He'd never had reason to. He'd always written "Jae" on things if he needed a short version of his name...

A small smile could be seen on the boy's face, because he didn't get caught. Somehow, his patience paid off. He knew his teachers in Japan would be proud, but they aren't the most affectionate however. They are all about training, hard work, and mastering one's skill. It was never about reward, so not getting a prize from Professor Tanner wasn't a big deal at all. He had fun, and had a good exercise anyway.
As soon as he saw the red sparks, and heard the professor's next instruction, he pulled his hood down and went to where the rest of the class were.
Balance numbers? Awesome! Nothing is better than self-discovery. And...maybe his initials would reveal more about himself? Without a word, he sat on the floor and got his book, parchment and quill out.

It had been months already since the incident, but, thanks to one Professor Hirsch, he's starting to be kinder to himself despite his failures. It's something that he can't fully let go of yet, but he's got six more years to master it.
Jace kept his head down, read and re-read the text about number 3. He didn't need to explain things to Professor Tanner for now. The explanation was pretty much self explanatory.

There was spells being shot around as well as scattering students. After a spell or two, Olivia realized the way to guess where Tanner was in the room was to trace the spell bursts aimed at her classmates. It was admittedly easier said than done at times, especially when the Ravenclaw had to go through the fog with no idea what to expect on the other side, but she was managing not to become a target so far. Whoops…narrowly missed that obstacle on the latest go around of the nearest area. She had gotten distracted by watching a classmate get caught herself.
And then it was over.
Tanner was calling for their attention and ending the whole activity. What…she had made it? That was a weird thought. Well not weird weird but maybe interesting in the grand scheme of things. Nevertheless, Olivia made her way back to the door as directed. Hearing the instructions, the Ravenclaw dug out a clean sheet of parchment and her quill from her book bag that she had stashed in a safe place. Calculation time which allowed them, or at least her a chance to recover from running and dashing and avoiding things. Her quill beginning the scratch out her copying and writing.

Just like the professor. She actually shared a balance number with Professor Tanner. Turning to the next chapter she needed to look at, Olivia looked up the meaning for three even though it had been briefly touched upon in the woman’s explanation of balance numbers, copying it into her notes. Then she began thinking of a possible interpretation, adding that to the end.

You can be extremely emotional when faced with a problem. Try to control this tendency; you need a degree of objectivity. You may become too personally attached to the solution you seek, thus failing to see that the outcome can be beneficial to all concerned.
Interpretation: Maybe I’m supposed to be more inclined to working with others. And to keep myself from getting overly emotional in the face of issues.

Azura slowly and carefully moved back to where the Professor Tanner was when she saw the red sparks and she breathed a sigh of relief, she hadn't died! Not to mention the Head Girl was nearly impossible to find! So there was that..
And yes! No death! That was a plus! Hooray! Still time to get that kiss..
Uhh.. Anyways.. She looked up at the Professor as she started to talk, and then settled on the ground to work out her balance number! She pulled out her parchment and Quill and got to work.

Uhh.. She couldn't reduce her number.. did that mean her balance number was 6?
"Uhh Professor, what if you have a single digit number? Is that your balance number?" She asked as she raised her hand and looked up at the Professor.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Oh, no! Both spells had hit Esme! Rachel ran towards her friend. "Esme, are you okay? I hadn't meant to cast the spell at the same time as Professor Tanner. I'm sorry.'' She was worried that she had somehow injured the Hufflepuff.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Once sure that Esme was okay, Rachel headed back to the door as was instructed. Close to Tanner, she trained her eyes on the board. Oh, the Balance Number. It sounded very fascinating as the woman explained though Rachel thought she knew how she responded in stressful situations... she worried for the most parts.
It was difficult to picture Tanner as a hot headed person. Surely she wasn't that hot headed. Mulling over the idea of a feisty older Professor, Rachel began her calculations:

But you can rely too heavily on friends and family to provide you solace instead of handling the situation directly and responsibly. You may be too likely to retreat to the good feelings provided by people not involved in your situation. Responsibility is the issue here. You helped create the situation in the first place, and are an essential part of the solution. Accept your role.
Interpretation: I believe this interpretation means that to overcome problems, I should try to understand the persons involved and the issue and that I run away from the problem instead of facing it. Based on number 6's interpretation, I gravitate towards persons not involved in the issue and instead, I should face it; find a resolution.

Ariadne jumped in surprise when the red sparks rocketed into the air. Game over! That had been kind of fun looking back on it now. When it had been right in the thick of things, though...DIFFERENT story. Kind of SCARY, to say the least.
Ariadne gathered around and listened to the discussion about balance numbers. So THAT was how this all connected to Arithmancy! It seemed pretty easy to calculate, too! Surely she could have just done that in her head in a stressful situation. She plopped down onto the ground and pulled out a fresh piece of parchment and a quill.

2 :: Use tact and diplomacy. Be less emotional. Be courageous in your approach to the solution you seek, rather than backing away from problem because you fear confrontation. Work hard to diffuse tension; your innate talent is to find a mutually satisfying solution to all. You are willing to compromise. Be more optimistic and lighthearted. Try not to blow problems out of proportion. You are overly sensitive and have to work to be more balanced. Balance and harmony are there for you the minute you apply yourself to any problem. You can be the peacemaker.
Hmm. Less emotional would have done her some good. She was WAY too keyed up about that arena. Courage...lack of fear...yeah, this pretty much summed her up perfectly.
I learned that I approached the arena with way too much emotion. My fear and lack of courage got the best of me and probably helped me get caught in the end. I think my Balance Number is trying to tell me that if I am stressed out, things just aren't going to work out for me. If I'm a little more calm, I'm probably more likely to achieve my goals.

The intensity of the moment was grand. The rushing around, tripping, falling and banging into things could be heard echoing around her. So much was happening all at once it was a little confusing and yet it was a great time. Only it came to an end all to soon as they were all called over to Professor Tanner.
As she listened it seemed the days activity really did reflect on numbers. Grabbing her things from inside her bag Hady sat down where she was resting a textbook on her lap. After taking down some notes she quietly began to figure out what the initials to her name meant for her.

Hady set her quill down as she reread the answer to her number. Was she really overly sensitive to things? She didn't think so. And she was normally the peacemaker. Well then. Yeah she didn't think it was her...but maybe it was.

However her gratefulness faded as she felt herself sinking into the mud. Mud was supposed to be thicker than water; she can tread water, so why was she sinking in mud?!? Unless it was really quicksand?! Slowly, she felt something pulling at her ankles... biting them ... and she drew a deep breath before being submerged and only her eyes were visible above the mud surface. Surely Tanner wouldn't have set the mud pit up to consume them though. She wouldn't let a student die.... would she?!?

Just about when Tia nearly lost hope... when she thought her final moments were going to be in a mud pit in the arithmancy classroom, when she lost sight, the seventh year felt her ankles being released from whatever was pulling her down. She felt herself forcing herself above the mud surface and though she had no idea what Tanner had said, she assumed this meant the end of the activity. To which Tia promptly cleaned the mud off her uniform and skin using a non-verbal scourgify. Followed by a finite to end any of the disillusionment charm that may have still remained on herself.
Finding her way to where the class was grouped around a blackboard, Tia had to admit it all made sense now - their initial activity, that is. Balance number.

Sigh, she had so much blast on this activity. Couldn't they do it again?

A practical approach to these ideals is to try to put yourself in the shoes of the person with whom you are in conflict. There are always more angles to a problem than you tend to acknowledge.
Okay.... She was quite confused about this. "Professor???" She raised her hand. "I don't really understand what this means."

Somehow, Scarlett had managed to dodge all the spells that Tanner sent her way, even when there were so many she couldn't really tell WHERE the professor was hiding. But her patience had paid off, and the activity was over and she had not gotten hit with a spell. YAY! Did that mean she won?!
Oh, no. There was no prize. BOOOOO.
And now on to calculations. Scarlett sighed and got out her parchment. She'd been hoping more of the lesson would be that physical activity, but almost half the lesson was done now...so that was the upside at least!
Calculation time...at least it was only her initials. That wasn't too hard. She scribbled down all her info onto the paper and began to calculate and reduce before getting the interpretation from the book and jotting that down as well.

Book interpretation: EIGHT (8): Use your considerable power in a balanced way. You may use power in a manipulative way, rather than confront people on principle. Use your power in a higher way, namely, by accepting personal responsibility for the issue and its solution. You have enormous creativity and the leadership to find an answer to almost any problem. Try not to force your own solution upon groups, but include their concerns and ideas in the larger solution that you can bring about. Learn to use power for the good of all.
Once that was done, Scarlett read over the interpretation a few times. That made sense to her...she was pretty creative, and often tried to use her power for good. Usually she just kind of stood back but if she COULD be in the leadership role, she took it. Hmm. Seemed ok.

"GAA!!" Kitty screamed in surprise as Ariadne fired a spell right in her direction. It was too fast for her to duck, and soon Kitty found herself immobilized.
But just as the spell wore off; red sparks shot into the air and the game was over. Oh well! That had been fun. "Nice shot Ariadne," said Kitty, smiling genuinely at the Slytherin as she walked out of the corridor and went to rejoin the class. She listened with interest as the Professor talked about their numbers and finding their balance number. Then she took out her textbook and began to look for hers.

It was cool. Kitty agreed, she needed more courage - but she was getting better and she did have many friends now that she didn't have last year.
Her hand shot into the air. "Professor, my middle name is DuGray, but just for fun I changed it to Darkness last year, but then I changed it back to DuGray after the start of term feast. They both start with the same letter so it wouldn't change my number, but I have a question. Are the numbers ever wrong? And what happens if someone changes their name to a name that doesn't start with the same letters? Does their original number still matter?"
Kitty hoped that she had control over her number and not the other way around, but she knew very little about this and felt she had to know more.

The activity was over already?
Oh well. Esme supposed that was for the best because it probably was more fun to try to remain hidden than it was to find her classmates. On the other hand it would have given her an excuse to further practice Impedimenta...
Finally the reason for everything they had done so far made sense. It tied back to numbers. Everything in Professor Tanner's lessons did. She was half-tempted to ask if they could do stuff like this during every class but she already knew that the answer would be no. This one time would be extra special for that very reason.
Using her textbook as a guide, Esme went about calculating her Balance Number:

Now to find out what that meant... She flipped through the book until she reached Chapter 24:

This was... accurate. She made a mental note of what the textbook told her because this was something that she seriously needed to work on in the future. Esme knew that no one was perfect but she wanted to try her best to resolve any issue that she could so that she could grow as a person and live a happy and stress-free life.

He saw a spell being sent towards where he was and ducked just in time to miss it. Carl had stayed like that, squatting behind the metal platform, until he heard Professor Tanner announcing the end of the activity. He was more than happy to stand up then and make his way to the group.
The Balance Number. This would be easy, he only had to use his initials. He sat down on the ground and took out his parchment and quill. Time to get to work!

Seven (7): You retreat into some safe haven within yourself and hope you will not have to deal with the issue at hand. Yet, the clarity and analytical abilities of your mind are sufficient to provide you with insight into the problem, and a clear path to its solution. You have to work at confronting yourself and the issues you face unemotionally and calmly. You can be engulfed in the emotional aspects of the issue, which clouds your mind and prevents you from using your clarity to find an answer. Get past the emotion and you will find an answer.
... Huh? So he was emotional? Like, cannot-deal-with-issues emotional? Carl did not really agree. He read the explanation about his number again, thinking that he must have missed something.

Hmm. A very tough question. "I am going to have to be honest and say that I am not sure on this one." She was not by any means an expert on Eastern cultures and the intricacies of their names. "If you know how it is written on your birth certificate then I would go with that. But if you are not quite sure, try them both and see which you think fits you better."

He.was.floored. Literally and metaphorically. His balance number was so accurate that Jace could not help but have his jaw hanging.

Jace kept his head down, read and re-read the text about number 3. He didn't need to explain things to Professor Tanner for now. The explanation was pretty much self explanatory.
Tiara nodded her approval at the boy's work. "You are catching on quickly to this subject, Mister Reed. Well done."

Three…
Just like the professor.
SPOILER!!: Notes 2
THREE (3): Be more lighthearted and optimistic in your approach to problems. Try to work with others toward a mutually satisfying solution. Use your considerable charm to influence the situation.
"It appears we are balance number twins, Miss Stone," she remarked. Hopefully the girl didn't find that to be a bad thing. "And a mature personal application to go with it. Smart," she said, tapping her temple

"Uhh Professor, what if you have a single digit number? Is that your balance number?" She asked as she raised her hand and looked up at the Professor.
Next up was a young Ravenclaw's work to check over. But before Tiara could get to her, her hand had hit the air with an inquiry. After a quick double check of the girl's math, she nodded her head. "You are correct. If there is no need to reduce, you simply don't! You are a 6." But Tiara would leave the interpretive discovery up to her.

Oh, another case of wisdom beyond years. Then again, this was a Ravenclaw they were dealing with, so perhaps she shouldn't be all too surprised. "Solid personal application, Miss Watson.
And what did the young Greingoth have? Oh, interesting. "Now normally I would suggest to leave 11 unreduced, as it is a Master Number. But I see your textbook has failed to give you interpretations for the main Master Numbers." Which seemed quite a large failing in her eyes. "Perhaps I need to owl the publishers on this matter!"

Hady set her quill down as she reread the answer to her number. Was she really overly sensitive to things? She didn't think so. And she was normally the peacemaker. Well then. Yeah she didn't think it was her...but maybe it was.

Easy enough number to calculate too.
She then flipped to the page to read her interpretation and couldn't help but feel even more isolated by the truth in the words. She was definitely a loner when it came to solving issues, as she preferred to solve her own problems and issues. She hated advice from others. Biting her lower lip, she just didn't know what to say or do. Which made sense given her balance number.
The next student she came to also had an uncertain look on her face. "Is something wrong, Miss Mancini?" Perhaps she was sour over not getting extra credit points for staying alive in the arena.

As the Professor asked them to gather around, she followed her and took a seat. Apparently there was the correlation between their activity and the lesson today. The balance number. Oh... That makes sense. Ava pulled her parchment and dipped her quill to the ink, started doing the calculation.
Then she flipped her textbook into the chapter 24.
Okay.... She was quite confused about this. "Professor???" She raised her hand. "I don't really understand what this means."
As Tiara came to Miss Burton, she glanced at her work to figure out what she was talking about. "I think it is saying that you tend to focus on your perspective.
Once that was done, Scarlett read over the interpretation a few times. That made sense to her...she was pretty creative, and often tried to use her power for good. Usually she just kind of stood back but if she COULD be in the leadership role, she took it. Hmm. Seemed ok.

A few years back, one of her all time favorite students had posed a similar question at the beginning of a lesson, and after it became clear that the whole class was interested, she immediately scrapped her plan and they held a debate about it. She smiled at the memory.
"Excellent question, Miss Valentine! There are two schools of thought here. Traditionalists and your textbook would encourage you to always use the name on your birth certificate. But modern arithmancers are beginning to see value in 'new' names as well, just as married names, adoptive names, and the like." Those were the two most common cases, at least. "My view is that both would provide valuable insight."

Next she checked over Esme's work. "Everything appears to be in order here, Miss Darcy. Good work," she said, finishing it off with a smile.
At that point, Tiara glanced down at her watch. Goodness, they were almost out of time! "Well, I guess we had better wrap up! Last thing: just to cement the process in your minds, I want you to grab out a fresh sheet of parchment. Calculate the Balance Number for our illustrious Headmistress, Meredith Noel Moxley. Then, using your textbook, I would like you to write a few sentences of suggestions for how she can better deal with the pressures of leading our great school."
And the catch. "And yes, I will be delivering these to her to prove how much you all are learning! So best not to put your name on it unless you're nice," she finished with a wink.

Rachel smiled up at Professor Tanner. "I'll try my best, Professor,'' she said, meaning every word of it. Yes, she did remember times when she would avoid a subject because it was uncomfortable for her. Especially of recent. The Eagle was disappointed when Tanner announced that class was almost up but was pleased they had one more activity to do.
She wasted no time in getting started.

Professor Hirsch had offered to accompany him when he visits the woman, and even if Jace agreed, he still felt unprepared for the...talk. Interpretation: To have a Four as a Balance Number, it could be assumed that the person is a natural born leader. He or she must have a broad mind, so his or her leadership will be effective. This person must be able to stay on top of things, and act as arbitrator in conflicts.
He purposefully did not put his name on his parchment because...what if she hates him still? If his own Balance Number was accurate, he was hoping that it would be the same for Professor Moxley. If it held any truth for her, then maybe it's not a bad idea to finally talk to her.

Hearing Professor Tanner's voice close to where she was sat Hady lifted her head to look up at her. "I'm not sure? I don't really think my number suits me very much or maybe I'm just not seeing it," she replied truthfully. It was possible that these things from her number she just didn't want to see in herself. Given some time to think it over and reflect on some of her life experiences she might see things in a different light.
Right now though wasn't the time to dwell on things as they were moving on quickly before the end of the lesson. There was another name she needed to figure out. The Headmistresses. Her name certainly wouldn't be going on this one...just in case.

My Interpretation: Dear Headmistress Moxley:
You're a great Headmistress and I know that you only just started. I want you to know that I think you are doing a good job, and I like all the teachers except of course the Hag - and that wasn't anyone's fault. But even though you're doing great, the following advice is still something I hope will come in useful:
Your number says that you are a good, assertive leader but that you should try to have perspective and forgiveness. If for example a student had just broken a Hogwarts rule and made you angry, my recommendation would be to not punish her/him right away in the moment you catch them doing it, but instead to wait until you are not mad and then punish them. If you punish someone when you are angry, then maybe you aren't really being fair. Maybe that student didn't know about the rule, or maybe she was just having a bad day. It doesn't help to get angry and to yell. Actually I think this is good advice for everyone, not just for you or for someone who has number four.
