Brrrrrrr. It was much too cold outside, and that frigid air was seeping into the castle through every crack in the millenium-old structure. But that was nothing compared to the grounds. It was days like this that made Tiara grateful for her office indoors she currently had; her first office in the stadium had been quite drafty.
The first task was to light a fire in the fireplace. "Incendio," she said, pointing her wand at the grate. No need to bother the elves with this one. Then she propped open the door in eager anticipation. Time for some learning!

Inherited traits. Those sounded... interesting enough. Kaycee decided she'd bite.
Alright. Here it goes. She scribbled her name on her paper and started the calculation.

She then checked the textbook.

... lovely. According to this, her hard work and talent pretty much translated to she inherited an ego.

Right. They needed to calculate their number. Esme saw this coming. Thank Merlin she didn't have a long last name or this might take a while. As it was, she only had five letters to work with. Not too shabby.
Turning to a new page in her notebook, she began to work it out:

She looked to see what the meaning of her number meant:

Well... this was rather accurate, though Esme wondered if she was really THAT stubborn. She'd have to ask Juno about it later.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Rachel nodded understandingly. She made a mental note to see Professor Tanner after class or sometime later when they both had some free time. She couldn't wait to be enlightened more about the Master Numbers. It was so kind of the Professor to offer her time to explain the topic.
She was even more excited to find out all about her family name. Rachel quickly pulled her textbook towards her and opened it to the appropriate page then began to work:
Quote:

2+0= 2
TWO (2): You inherit a peaceful nature, the desire to reduce conflict, a sensitivity to things, a gift for detail, a love of gathering things, and a loving nature.
Rachel read the meaning of her Family Name Number repeatedly, hardly daring to believe how accurate it was. Hadn't she tried to help Haddie and David be friends so that they could put their problems behind them? Importantly also, she was sensitive. She could say the same for her a lot of her family members especially her daddy.

Carl looked at Professor Tanner's demonstration carefully. Hmm, he could do this. Leonard. First, he had to find a number for each letter. He turned to Chapter Two of his textbook and found the conversion system. Second, he had to add the numbers together. That would not be too hard. He dipped his quill in black ink and began his work.
Quote:

So according to Chapter Twenty-seven, he had a conservative attitude and a stubborn streak. That sounded true!
Let your light shine || Be the sun || You're important. Always.
Noelle looked at chapter two and began to write her last name. SUMMERS. Then she took the numbers in the book that matched her name. Doing the simple problem, she came out with 9.

Turning to chapter 27, Noelle looked to see what 9 had said. She bit her lip thinking about how true this was. Empathy, generosity, and artistry were her family's. She could see a lot of that being true. She turned to Hope to see if Hope thought the same, since they were both cousins.
Haddie grinned. "Right!? We'll definitely use flying lessons more than we'll use magical math." Of course Haddie knew who he was. Noelle and Sabbath's return has been all over the school. More so in that he was Ravenclaw. "Nice to meet you, Sabbath." That was an awesome name. Haddie gave Sabbath's offered hand a high five. She still refused to shake hands with kids her own age. They were kids. Leave the handshaking to the adults. "Haddie."
Before she could say anymore class began, and... oh, she must have annoyed Professor Tanner more than she thought, as the Professor didn't even acknowledge her questions about different cultures naming practices. Oh well. Haddie gave Sabbath a sheepish little shrug, more amused than anything and took out her quill, parchment and book.

And now the real fun part... because he just LOVED Arithmancy, like, really.
Zeke didn't even need to open his book for the Pythagorean system, he had it memorised by the end of his second year, so instead, he turned to chapter twenty-seven for the interpretations.
Fresh parchment in front of him, he started his calculations.

This was why she barely tolerated Arithmancy. The work involved, and Brooklyn had intentionally stayed quiet during the discussion of what the family number was, what it meant, all of that. She’d glanced over at the little Ravenclaw who had sat down by her and said hi to her earlier, though, noting he’d shifted closer to her. As long as he didn’t get too close, she’d stay quiet. Any attempts at cuddling and that would be it though. It wasn’t that cold, especially by the fire.
As they’d been released to actually figure out their family numbers, she’d begrudgingly pulled her journal closer. She still didn’t believe that any of it would make any sort of sense to her, but at least it wasn’t too hard when it came to the math. Simple numbers, really.

As she looked that up, she only became that much more decided that Arithmancy made no sense at all. Maybe that description worked for some people. Like her sister. But not her at all.

So...he wasn't wrong completely. The young Ravenclaw did not waste any second to write down all the important information being thrown out in the open. While scribbling away, he felt sorry for those students whose surnames are so long...hyphenated even.
Jace then wrote down his surname, and began to add it up.

...oh? Jace blinked...read, and re-read the meaning behind his family name not quite believing it. He hated change. Routine is perfectly fine. From the get go, he had a hard time coping with boarding school, and being so far away from his family. However, he can safely say that he is innately curious...but not really a risk taker.
Huh. Maybe the description is true for his dad though.
Hand up. "Professor? What about hyphenated surnames? How do you go about that? Does it have a special rule?" he asked, his hand outstretched high above his head.

The Gryffindor was actually enjoying this whole…numbers thing and continued to fill out her entire name on the list to see what her name meant to her? Well, to her identity as a whole? Wasn’t that important.
Yep she was so going to get more work done as well…Mel knew that both Mika and India hadn’t done well in Arithmancy and she, well, she was going to change that. She wanted to succeed at everything they hadn’t succeeded in.

And then, when she responded to his introduction with a high-five instead of a handshake he already knew he was going to get along with her.
As class started, he flashed his dimpled smile and replied, "its nice to meet you too, Haddie" before jotting his note and sending the crumpled ball sailing through the air to Noelle.

Oh no you don't. Why the boy had thrown it when she was so close boggled her mind, but she wasn't about to let anyone throw projectiles in her room, even if it was only some paper. "Thank you," she said, snatching it up. We need to talk. Heh. "Yes we do, Mister Gimenez. In my office, after class." And no, she wasn't giving that note back.
Oh, man!! Sabbath's eyes sought the heavens, why hadn't he checked if the professor was watching before he'd thrown it, that wasn't like him at all. He determined that it must of been the distraction of the things he needed to discuss with Noelle that made him careless. "Yes, Professor" Sabbath replied dully, slumping in his chair and flipping his notebook open again with a huff. He'd go and see her in her office after class.
After his admonishment from the teacher, Sabbath resigned himself to completing the set exercise, rifling through the pages of his textbook with Haddie working quietly beside him. She finished moments before him and queried him on his findings.

Even though Hadleigh may have been focused fully on her work and note taking she was highly aware of a small girl seating not to far from herself. And if the lesson hadn't started so quickly she very well would've had her little sister come join her however there was no time now she instead she flashed her a quick grin instead.
During her note taking she lifted her head at a voice and smiled lightly seeing it was Sabbath. "Pretty good, thanks. Glad to see you're back," she whispered in reply to him. She hadn't had much of a chance to see or speak with him since his return and made note to do so as soon as she could.
There really wasn't anymore time for talk sadly as the way to calculate ones Family Name number was explained. Well alright then. It was time to get one with this and figure out just what her name meant. Hady flipped open her textbook to the proper page and began quietly listing down the numbers that matched the letters of her name.

Hady choose to look up both last names. Her biological one which she used and never officially changed as well as her fathers being as he had adopted her years ago. Staring down at the traits to these Family Name numbers she wanted to laugh. Really the whole money and ego thing from number eight wasn't her but the number four was. Oddlyly enough the brunette wasn't sure just how she felt about this.

It was time to calculate their Family Name Number. Ariithmancy was always interesting. Finding number interpretations and seeing if they rang true was cool. Janelle flipped open her book and turned to the second chapter. Seeing the list of letters and their corresponding numbers, she set to work. After she had completed her calculations, she turned back to her book and found the number meanings.
Quote:

3+9+12

Janelle looked at her results and pondered the information. She supposed that was true of her family. Yes it was true,.......but that only explained a part of who they were. As she read on, Janelle discovered that some of the other meanings could apply to her family as well. She wondered if combining the Family Name Number with another Arithmancy number could give more insight into a family or an individual family member.

Ahh, yes, calculation time. Brian wasn't against Arithmancy - considering it was as close as Hogwarts got to usual mathematics - but it was somewhat ridiculous. It was a form of Divination, only too complex to be covered as part of that subject. Predicting the future. Only using numbers. But he'd do it.
The Hufflepuff took out his pen and started with writing out his surname on the sheet, and then added the corresponding numbers below it. And then totalled them. And reduced. And checked the text for the meaning - he really should memorize these things.

And reading that, Brian almost snorted. He could possibly maybe see the artistic flair bit. His entire family was full of artists. His father was a musician and his mother a painter. Philantrophy and generosity were more from his mother than his father, though, and it was just a little ridiculous to say that he would inherit a concern for others from a man he hadn't seen in two years.

He looked in his textbook for the number to letter conversions, even though he could have figured them out by simple counting. Laziness was a thing, did people know? Dima was doing this to entertain Tanner, but he didn't really believe in this codswallop, and he planned to disregard whatever results he got.
Dunking his quill into his inkwell again, he started on his calculations.

Tia smiled politely when the first year eaglet, Sam took the seat next to her. No doubt the young one needed assistance with the challenging subject of Arithmancy, which of course, Tia would provide as necessary. Family name numbers. She knew what those were, but she just sat there and listened to what her peers had to say about the number as she jotted a few notes down for interesting things said that she didn't know.
Flipping to Chapter Two in her textbook, the Head Girl looked over the familiar Pythagorean Number chart. Though at this point she could probably work out what numbers to assign to what letters if she had to, but when a chart was readily available, why shouldn't she take advantage of it? Besides, Sam might need it.
Carefully writing her surname in her notes, she followed the line underneath it with its appropriate numbers:
M-A-N-C-I-N-I
4-1-5-3-9-5-9
4+1+5+3+9+5+9 = 36 = 3+6 =9
Interesting. She had the same Family Name Number as the Professor. But it also kind of made sense, given their Ravenclaw nature. "You alright with these numbers, Sam?" Tia asked, turning to look at the younger Eagle.
Sam had beamed at Tia when she sat down, but hadn't had chance to say anything more because the lesson had started and she didn't know what family name numbers were. They sounded simple enough though, especially with the chart of numbers Tia had found in the textbook. Sam glanced across to get the page number, before opening her own, second-hand and rather battered, copy to the same section in case the Head Girl didn't want her reading over her shoulder.
First off, she wrote her surname on her parchment. And then Tia asked her a question as she started copying out the equivalent numbers. "I fink I'm okay wiff the reducin' bit," she said, "Tho if yeh wanna look ovver 'em feh me, that'd be cool." She finished copying out the numbers, and moved her parchment so Tia could check it as she went.
T Y L E R
2 + 7 + 3 + 5 + 9 = 26
2 + 6 = 8
Did it look okay? Sam glanced up at Tia. ""I coul' do wiff 'elp readin' the meanin', if yeh woul'nt mind."
Oooooh they were jumping right into it, then. Norah barely had time to wave hello to the ickle Gryffindor firstie who'd sat next to her before students were already giving answers to the first question. Making a mental note to ask the girl's name as soon as she had the chance, she bent over to scribble the explanation of family name numbers even though she was certain she already had it in her notes. She KNEW that one. OWLs had been good for something other than lowering her self esteem, then. Cool beans.
She opened her textbook to the instructed page and paused to shoot a grin at the younger girl before beginning her calculations. Alright. That was good, right? RIGHT. "Need any help?" Y'know...not with the maths probably because she wasn't very good at that. But she knew how to open the textbook, if that could be of any help. Man. She just deserved this badge less and less every day.

He'd forgot to mention the reducing thingy. He knew to do it, of course... after a few months of this, he knew. But... he still didn't get how the numbers could apply to someone when they were really just so... broad.
He went to work adding up his last name, thankfully short. He scribbled his addition out on the paper out of habit, humming to himself.

He looked at the number for a rather long time before looking around the classroom. How many other people had gotten the same one? Would they be similar to him, or would their families be similar to his? He wrinkled his nose and flipped through the pages in his book until he found the right chapter for the meanings, scribbling that underneath what was already on his page.
Quote:

Hmmmmm. Did... that apply? To his Herbologist dad who did experiments and stuff, maybe, but to Jaemin? The small boy wasn't sure. Did he really count as forceful, or strong-willed? Sure, he was willful, but... he was eleven. It was hard not to be willful at eleven. He looked around the classroom at the other students again.
Elliot listened to the teacher's explanation and nodded. Ok. This seemed to make some since. He glanced at his textbook before trying to work his out.

Elliot didn't think he was that great...but now that he thought about it...his older brother was a bit of boastful git. He was going to take that "possible inflated ego" to mean it was just his dumb big brother.

He was definitely not a stickler for facts and theories. Although... He thought to himself, his family's traits were a closer match. His family were top of their field in the world of flamenco arts because of their dedication, and perfectionism. And, culturally, their Gypsy heritage and family lore made them intensely private about their lives outside of the limelight. "It fits my family more or less, though" he added, with a shrug.
Haddie looked over at Sabbath's number, then checked it the description for it. "Mine doesn't even list family traits... My Mom's pretty hard working. My Dad too, but he hasn't been able to find a job in England, so," she shrugged. "My sister too, I guess. But that's the only part of this that applies to anyone in my family. The rest of it doesn't even fit them." She paused for a moment, in thought. "It does fit my cousin, I guess. She's a Denaker too, but I think that's because she takes more after her mom's side of the family." Now if she'd have gotten a one, or even a five. Hell, even a three would have fit her. But a four. Pfffft.
"Prof. Tanner. What does it mean if I completely don't match my number at all? Can I like trade it in for a better number?"

FOUR (4): You inherit a belief that hard work is the right way to work, a sense of cautiousness, thoroughness, and self-discipline.
Hmm. So according to this, the Greingoth were hard workers and really went after what they wanted. Sounded about right.
Tiara began to circulate the room. First up was a first year. After a quick glance through the girl's work, the professor gave her a thumbs up and a smile.

As she approached the Head Girl, Tiara was about to make a comment. But then Tia got involved with a young Ravenclaw and Tiara stepped back with an approving nod.

So was that how they did the Family number thing? It looked.... Simple enough? Yeah he can do that. So grab the book and do that maths. Here we go:
S A L A N D E R 1+1+3+1+5+4+5+9 = 29 2+9 = 11 1+1 = 2
So he got a 2? He turned to his textbook and read up what it means:
Wow... This says that he is very peaceful and loving. Hmmm..... Well he liked peace but he sure didn’t shy away from the action. He likes to collect things though that much was true. But yeah... Kinda not him? But wait he was a Salander. DOES THAT MEAN HE"S NOT A SALANDER???
Cue internal panic.
But as he glanced down the page he spotted an 11. Wait HE had an 11 too. Did that count or?....
He kept reading anyway:
Now THAT sounds more like him. And his dad. Uplift, encourage and inspire others? Check check and check! He don’t know much about the spiritual living part (have they met his dad? Pfffft). But his blue-green eyes stayed on the last part of the paragraph: You will learn from life through many tests that illuminate certain universal truths.
Huh. The Sorting Hat said the same thing to him.
Spooky. Cue X-Files theme.
Oh, had he spotted the error or not? "Remember not to reduce your 11, as it is a Master Number!" she reminded him. "And that fits you better, I would suspect," she finished.

... lovely. According to this, her hard work and talent pretty much translated to she inherited an ego.
Yes, that was one of the less wonderful family name numbers. "Remember, these are just traits you are exposed to from your family. It does not have to mean you are locked into that for life, dear." The look on the girl's face had been less than happy. She chose not to point out that 44 is one of the minor Master Numbers and therefore the connection is of more significance.

She was even more excited to find out all about her family name. Rachel quickly pulled her textbook towards her and opened it to the appropriate page then began to work:
Rachel read the meaning of her Family Name Number repeatedly, hardly daring to believe how accurate it was. Hadn't she tried to help Haddie and David be friends so that they could put their problems behind them? Importantly also, she was sensitive. She could say the same for her a lot of her family members especially her daddy.
Hmm. From what Tiara knew of little Rachel Watson, this suited her quite well. She apparently fit the mold of her family traits quite well.

Next up was a first year Hufflepuff to check in on. "Hmm.." she mused while looking over his work. "Whenever you reach 11, 22, or 33 in a calculation, you should halt immediately as you have arrived at a Master Number." This was a very new concept for the first year, so she pointed with her finger at the interpretation. "You inherit an ability to teach others in a masterful way. Your family name brings a keen sense of responsibility, love for your fellow human, and a desire to serve. You will learn, just as your family has learned, to overcome the many setbacks life will put in your path," she read off. "How does that compare?"

What did Miss Summers have for her today? "Ah, you have good traits from your family, Miss Summers." Anyone could agree with that, probably.

Fresh parchment in front of him, he started his calculations.

As she looked that up, she only became that much more decided that Arithmancy made no sense at all. Maybe that description worked for some people. Like her sister. But not her at all.
Maybe her math was wrong.
And how was...? "Yes, good work, Miss Andrews." She got an approving nod from the professor.

Oh, a good question! "There is no special rule, you would simply ignore the hyphen and treat is a one long surname." Very long. She wasn't sure where he had come up with that question, but she was glad he was curious enough to ask.

Another student who chose to look at multiple surnames. "How do you feel these numbers affect you, Miss Lynch?" she queried, curious as to the girl's thoughts.

She overheard Haddie saying that her family name number did not describe her. "And why do you think that could be, Miss Denaker?" Tiara inquired.
"No, you cannot trade it in for a different number," she stated. "But if you ever change your name for some reason, which most commonly occurs from marriage, you would take on those traits as well. Those may fit you better."

Haddie shrugged. What was with adults always asking kids why they think something, when the kid doesn't just think, she knows? Has Tanner-pants actually met Haddie? Rhetorical question. She has. "Because, I'm not like that at all." Clearly.
"Traits we're exposed to...? So it doesn't describe us or our family? What if we don't let those things influence us?" Her Dad could be a worrywart, or as the book seemed to describe it "cautiousness," especially when it came to magic and Hog... She got that empty feeling in the pit of her stomach again, like a void trying to fill itself and failing and quickly stopped thinking about that. She was not going to be like her Dad in that. Ever.
But okay... yeah. She begrudgingly nodded, guessing she could see how those traits might be things she's exposed to... even if they weren't really her. Haddie shrugged again and flipped to the chapter on personality numbers. Her curiosity was piqued.
She quietly added the numbers of her full name, then looked at the results... and Nope. That wasn't her. And this time was supposed to be her personality, or at least the first impression she gave off. She already knew what the first impression she gave off, people have been all but stating it all her life. Some do actually state it. This didn't match. Haddie flipped back to chapter 27.
Mel just grinned over to Tenacius the desire to stick her tongue out at him cheekily almost outweighed her desire to do well in class. Almost. “Oh come on Tenacius” she smirked, “My first name is Melbourne. That is a 6.” She grinned and then smiled over to Professor Tanner.
“Of course I was planning on working on most of my arithmancy numbers so I can at least have a better handle on it by the time I take my OWLs in fifth year” she nodded and with a grin she added “I want to do better than my sister Amelia she never got math-things.” She shrugged her shoulder and grinned and glanced over to Elliot before giving him a quick thumbs up.
