Default Arithmancy 1

Brrrrrrr. It was much too cold outside, and that frigid air was seeping into the castle through every crack in the millenium-old structure. But that was nothing compared to the grounds. It was days like this that made Tiara grateful for her office indoors she currently had; her first office in the stadium had been quite drafty.

The first task was to light a fire in the fireplace. "Incendio," she said, pointing her wand at the grate. No need to bother the elves with this one. Then she propped open the door in eager anticipation. Time for some learning!

"Hi Professor." Angel said as she walked into the room, she looked around to see if she could find any clues about what they were doing, but she just wasn't that interested at the minute, everything was going wrong this year and she already wanted to get it over with.

She went and sat down and waited to see what they would be doing today, hopefully it wouldn't involve a lot of writing stuff down because she'd probably get everything in a muddle, though she would try her best.
Tiara didn't notice anything off about Angel Valentine when the girl entered. She received a cheerful, "Hello, my dear," as she normally would.

It made things simpler. She didn’t have to change anything.

The expression on her face as she’d entered the classroom was, mostly, due to the weather. She had layers on, but she didn’t like freezing cold. Even having been here for years, she was still a Californian at heart. The fire she noticed as soon as she’d gotten inside definitely raised her spirits a little, enough that she was able to put on her traditional smile for the professor. “Good day, Professor Tanner,” she said politely, intentionally picking a seat close to the fire. At least she’d be warm, even if she ended up completely confused again by the end of lesson. That was normal by now.
"Ah, good day yourself, my dear. Any seat," she said, indicating the almost completely empty classroom.

Thank Merlin there was a fire! "Good morning Professor!" Kitty tried to sound cheerful as she went to sit as close as she could to the fire.
"And a good morning, yourself!" Smart, that one, taking a seat close to the warmth.

Seemed that they both had the same thought. Sitting beside her new friend, she tried to get as warm as possible.
"Welcome welcome, take a seat anywhere."

"Konnichiwa, Professor Tanner." he said, giving her a bow and a grin.

Jace situated himself closest to the fire, and tipped his head at an older Slytherin girl (BROOKLYN HI!). "Hi." he said, ever so softly and grinned at her. She does look a bit intimidating, but right now, the fire is more important.
Ah, Jace. She liked seeing her - well, they were just Ravenclaws now, she supposed. She really needed to get that through her mind. No matter, she was glad he was here. "Good morning!" she replied back heartily.

It was cold and Janelle gave an involutary shiver. Thank Merlin the professor had started a fire. That did kind of take the chill out of the air. Pulling out her necessary supplies, Janelle sat back and waited for class to begin.
With a smile on her face, Tiara greeted another of her brightest pupils. "Miss Guidry. Always glad to see you, dear," she said warmly.

"Oh hello, dear. Welcome, any seat is just fine." Though the seats were finally starting to fill up a bit now.

"Good morning, Professor Tanner." The Hufflepuff said and smiled at the Professor. He then proceeded to look for a place to sit. Finding one in the middle of the room, he sat down and rubbed his hands together to keep warm.
At first she had thought he was angry, but then she realized his arms were folded that way to keep warm. This she understood perfectly well. "Come on in, the fire is warm and inviting!"

No fuss or whining from her.

Tucking a lock of brunette hair behind her ear the Slytherin entered the room quietly. "Morning Professor," she greeted quietly with a light smile as she took her seat somewhere near the front of the room. It wasn't her best subject but it didn't matter she was here and ready to learn something. Proving this fact to be true Hady took out a clean sheet of parchment, her self inking quill and her textbook setting them out on the desk in front of her. Ready to begin now.
Hmm. Quiet today. Hopefully she was just tired and not unwell. "Morning, Miss Lynch." Tiara would be keeping an eye on her today, that was certain.

"Hello, Professor. I hope I find you well.'' She smiled graciously at the woman before going off to find a seat. She smiled to her friends- Kitty, Jace, Esme, Janelle, Hady and Carl. She opted to sit next to Esme, whom she was growing attached to. "Hello, Esme. It is Esme, right?'' Sometimes, Rachel had a difficult time telling the twins apart.
"You do indeed, if a bit stiff from the cold. Nothing an invigorating lesson cannot cure!" And she meant that, too.

At least he could expect a good mark for Arithmancy.

"Hi, Professor Tanner," Zeke greeted as he entered through the door, his satchel slung across his chest. He gave her a warm smile before turning his attention to his peers. Hady and Kaycee both received a nod and a hand up - because waving was for girls. It was when his gaze settled on Janelle that he suddenly felt the desire to join her.
"Hey," he greeted the Ravenclaw as he slipped into the desk next to hers, "how've you been?"
"Good morning, fine sir!" she greeted the young lion. She was always happy to see Zeke.

Okay so that last one was a class, but that didn't change the fact that whoever created Arithmancy was the devil themself. "Professor," she greeted. She liked Professor Turner even if she hated magical math as much as math math. "Can we skip the math today and get a flying lesson instead?" She asked that question ever class pretty much. Today was no exception.
Normally Tiara was a fairly understanding person, but for some reason this remark just rubbed her the wrong way today. She pursed her lips and stopped herself from making an unkind reply and instead simply replied with, "It seems to me that the room is not quite built for that particular activity, my dear. We had better stick with Arithmancy." And that was all she planned to say about that topic.

This hadn't exactly been her greatest OWL, but that was probably her own fault for being rubbish at the studying thing. It hadn't been too dreadful though, so here she was like every lesson, ready to be embarrassed sniffles and all.

"Hi Professor Tanner," she said, taking a seat right at the front of the classroom and pulling parchment and a quill from her bag. This was a sparkly ink kind of day. It just was. Arithmancy was just one of those subjects that NEEDED it, y'know? It was a science, really.
"Ah, Miss Kittredge. Good morning, find a seat anywhere you would like."

Oh, the head girl! Excellent. "Miss Mancini, hello. Welcome to class."

"Hey there Professor Tanner." And off he goes to the back of the class.
She chuckled at his informal greeting. "Hey yourself!" And with a name like Tenacius, why not?

She immediately noticed the warmth of the fire as she entering the classroom, and gave Tanner a grateful smile as she greeted her. "Good day, Professeh Tanneh!"

She wasn't so cold she felt the need to sit by the fire though. Instead, she headed to a desk next to the Head Girl's. Tia would help her if she needed to read the meanings of things from the textbook, right?

It was a nice change from the drafty corridors. "Good morning, Professor," she greeted the woman standing there waiting for them all with a smile.
Onto getting a seat and the Ravenclaw took note of the familiar faces already there.

"Hey..." she greeted to Rachel and Esme and Tia and Sam seated together and Haddie, Kitty, Hady and Zeke each sitting randomly or with others she didn't know. Hmmm...the options were open. Finally she decided to take a seat near the Hufflepuff prefect(Norah) to strike for a new face. "Hello," Olivia said, deciding to channel her inner badger today.
"Good morning, if a little bit chilly!" she said, wrapping her robes a bit tighter around herself.

Maybe.

"Hi, Professor Tanner!" she said, walking into the classroom. OHHH, A FIRE! "Thanks for the warm fire!" Looking across the room, she saw where a few of her friends were already here. Yes, another Greigngoth. Tiara had not been teaching at Hogwarts during the majority of their presences, but she had heard plenty of stories. Hopefully this young girl would write her own history rather than stay in her family's shadow. "Hello, dear. Take a seat, we are about to begin."

So it was starting to warm up now that bodies were in the room. Tiara knew she herself would have no problem with the chills once things got rolling. She was in constant motion during her lessons, and that got the blood flowing. As for the students, well... they wouldn't be sedentary for long, anyhow.

"Alright, settle in, everyone," she called to bring the class to order. "We have a lot to do today, so I plan on getting right into things. Family Name Number: what is it, and how does one find it?" She looked around expectantly especially at her older students. They should have at the very least heard of this concept. And, they should also know by now that she did not want their answer in textbook-ese language, either.

Olivia absently nodded at the return greeting, getting what she meant. But thankfully warming up so it was all good. The Ravenclaw set about setting out some sheets of parchment and a quill or two to be ready for class to begin which didn’t take much time to wait on. Her attention switched back to the professor when she spoke up, bringing them all together with a topic.

Family name number.

Seemed simple enough. Obviously dealt with the last name which was your family name or surname. Coupled with what they had learned already and the occasional mention from her aunt, she had a vague idea so she raised her hand. "A number based on your last name..." To start off with. “Um…you take the letters of your surname and the matching numbers,” whatever they were called, she couldn’t remember at the moment, “…and add them together before reducing.”

That sounded right.

HOLISTIC ACTRESS {X O} EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED

Mel looked around the classroom as she sat there and grinned at all of the friends she had with her…really she wanted to get to know the other people now sitting with Tenacius more as well… “Good Morning Professor Tanner,” Mel grinned over to everyone in her ever growing group of friends.

Sooooooooooo they had to find family numbers? Didn’t that sound…kind of obvious? Raising her hand she asked “is is something we find by adding and reducing the numbers Pythagorean numbers associated with our surnames?” She asked and then quickly added “I do have a question though…what happens with people who are adopted? Do they use the name they were born with or the name they were given after adoption or both?” she asked as obviously things needed to be clarified.

See. SEE. This was why he didn't get this class. Jaemin understood math and he understood spelling, but this class was some sort of weird crossover with a dash of some form of Divination-y feeling stuff thrown in. It just didn't sit right in his head - he blamed that on the fact that his head was so full of other stuff all the time.

"You add the numbers that go with the letters in your last name up... and then it tells you stuff about your family...?" Since it was the family name, it wouldn't be specific to the one person who was doing it, right? Like... Jaemin's would cover him, but it'd also cover his mom and his dad and his grandmom and his granddad and so on and so forth.

Maybe?

Elliot had settled toward the back when class began. By the time the first question was asked he was already confused. "Family...name number?" He looked around listening to other students. This first year was totally lost. He had never been any good at arithmancy.

So they wuz gonna be talking about Family name numbers...

Did his dad know something about that? He sure did! Did he tell his kid? He would if he remembered such things. Leaky cauldron for a brain remember?

"Do we just pick whichever one we like? Or the ones we think is lucky? Because Dad keeps picking out 5 for lots of things, horse races, car races...." all the races. "And then he named me TENacius. Which is a double of 5."

He has no idea what any of this is about....

And then Mel asked a most VALID question. Yeah what about adoptees Professah?

They had learned a lot about each other in that Ancient Runes class........and had some great laughs.

"Glad to see you in Arithmancy and not Astronomy." Janelle gave Zeke a smile about their shared joke. "Wonder what we'll be doing today?", Janelle said as she looked over toward Professor Tanner.

He was totally worth checking out too, mmhmm.

Nevertheless, he was pleased to hear she'd been 'great' because that was better than 'good' or 'fine' so yeah. Excellent logic, Mr. Browne. "Can't complain," he replied as she returned the greeting. Of course, the grin on his face was a better indication of how he was, because he was practically on top of the world. Too many good things going on to be bothered with being... down, or less than great.

Zeke chuckled lightly at the Astronomy reference, and reflected back to their first lesson of the school year, it had been his last... and somehow he was positive that Flamsteed was pleased with this fact. It wasn't his fault though, that he was so irresistible to women.

He had been wondering the same thing though, what they'd be learning today, so he couldn't give much of an answer in reply. All he could do was shrug, "Something interesting?" Yeah. He was sure it would be. Despite his dislike of muggle arithmetic, there was more to the numbers with Arithmancy, he had an appreciation for the subject which he never in his wildest dreams could have anticipated before coming to Hogwarts.

A fine sir? Why yes, yes he was. Zeke beamed, pleased with warm reception. Physically and emotionally. It was a winning day.

He was glad to be jumping straight into the lesson though, because wasting time with things bored him... like meditation in Herbology, it was enough to put him in a coma. As it was, he'd only managed to pull his things out of his bag when they were underway with Family Numbers.

Hand raised, Zeke contributed his thoughts on the matter. "It informs us about family traits, and to find it we calculate the numbers assigned to our surnames and reduce it until it's a single digit, or a master number." He'd had a look at his before... but that was some time ago now.

Family name number ... He remembered reading that chapter in his text book. He raised his hand, but the students who answered before him already covered more than what he knew. It seemed silly to repeat what they had said. "I - I agree with what they said. Also, your family name is related to your spirits and that is why we study it."

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

"I look forward to this lesson.'' Rachel smiled, wondering what this invigorating lesson could be about.
From her seat, she watched Haddie come into the class but didn't keep her focus on her once- best- friend. Then Tenacius arrived. She knew instantly Haddie would opt to sit with him. She wasn't surprised as she had recently gotten the feeling that Haddie liked him. The dark haired girl, missing the other girl very much, turned her attention to Esme again. "Lovely. It's not that I don't like Juno, I'm just closer to you than her.'' Oh, there were Olivia and Ariadne. Rachel waved to them both.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The Family trait number? This was very interesting. She would love to learn what her surname said about her. Rachel raised her hand. "If I recall correctly, the number reveals information found within your surname. It can be calculated by corresponding each letter of the last name with the appropriate number of whatever Number system we will be using, adding and reducing them until we come to a single digit or sometimes a Master number.'' She had a question, however. "I'm not very clear on Master Numbers. Why is it that we do not reduce them, Professor?''

It was nice talking to her friends, but unfortunately Professor Tanner was starting the lesson so the conversation had to come to a close for the moment.

Instead, Esme focused on taking out her textbook, notebook, and a pencil. They were going to be talking about the Family Name Number, which she knew a fair bit about. This class wasn't too bad as long as the math remained simple. Since other people had already started answering the question she settled with getting ready to write notes.

Jace caught sight of his friends, and waved back to them in greeting. The fire wasn’t doing anything much to the little boy since he gets cold easily. With that, he scooted closer to the Slytherin girl beside him, still respecting her personal bubble. He didn’t want to be banished right then and there since class has already started!

Right. Surnames, and numbers? He sure knows how to find it. That one’s easy: it’s either they use the Pythagorean Method...or the Chaldean one, but the ‘what’ of the question, he was unsure of. What he knows is that, “Professor?” Jace raised his hand to answer, “The number derived from our surnames, with the aid of our birth dates can determine who we are...or what we are capable of.” Jace wasn’t sure if he used the right words, but that’s how he understood the words in his textbook.

The young boy got his parchment and quill out, ready to take some serious notes.

As others began to enter the room a few small waves or a simple nod of her head was given in greeting. It was a bit strange to her lately how more and more she found herself sitting off to the side and allowing whomever wanted to come join her rather then sit beside a friend. Not that it was a bad thing at all to make new friends but it a tad outside her element to not stick with what was already familiar to her.

As the lesson began Hady picked up her quill and wrote down the days topic. Family Name Number. She knew what it was, heard of it before and read about it before. Sometime ago she had even looked hers up but she couldn't really recall if it had been for a lesson or just her own curiousity while she had been reading. Either way it looked like she was about to find out what hers was and meant again today.

Opting out of giving the same reply as everyone else Hady sat there taking down some simple notes.

Janelle nodded as Zeke spoke and then snapped to attention when Professor Tanner called the class to order. She didn't waste any time because the first question was on the table immediately. Janelle raised her hand to give her thoughts on the matter.

"The Family Name Number uses a person's last name to tell something about the family and the individual. The cool thing is that you can use your birth name or adopted name or married name. They can all tell you things about a person."

Eh.

People were already giving the obvious answers and Brian wasn't big on repitition of things that were already being repeated by multiple people. The whole using-their-own-words thing wasn't much, and really the only interesting piece of new information was that you could use your married name. Or birth name. And both would tell you about yourself.

Huh. Wasn't that interesting?

He'd just take notes. Very few, since there wasn't much to say, but at least he'd remember what they discussed when he went over them later.

Kitty did not know what a family name number was, but she still thought she should say something since her seat by the fire was so close to the professor. "A family name number is a number that is assigned to the last name of a family and it tells something about the family." Okay, it was an easy guess - she had copied the answer that most of the other students seemed to be giving. What her last name's number was she did not know, or even if she had a number or what it meant if she did have one.

Let your light shine || Be the sun || You're important. Always.

Arthimacy was the first class that Noelle had been in since she had been back. Math of all classes. It definitely wasn't one of Noelle's strongest subjects but she was kind of excited to be doing something so normal as going to class.

She slipped into class and sat towards the middle. She noticed a lot of familiar faces and even waved at a few like Kitty Rachel and Haddie.

Noelle pulled out her quill and parchment, the cold not bothering her. She made it out of a dungeon with rags as clothes., and spent most of her time in the outside winter weather since she had been back. She was just ready to learn. To feel normal again.

Noelle saw her big sister Hady and almost went to squeeze by her but then the class started and the professor was talking about family.. Something. Darn. She needed to write stuff down. Luckily, people were speaking and her quill went to scribbling. Family name number. She had no idea what it was. She would let the other students answer.

We had better stick with Arithmancy." And that was all she planned to say about that topic.

Did Haddie ever know when to shut up? No, she did not. "Professor Primeaux turned the Charms classroom into three rooms, each as big as the regular Charms classroom, or bigger. The second room was huge." It could easily have been used for flying lessons. Haddie shrugged and grinned. "Just sayin'."

Ohmigawd! Noelle! Haddie gave her an excited wave back. She was back!

Okay, today's lesson didn't sound too bad. It was actually kinda of interesting. "What about countries that don't have surnames, or use different surname spelling for different genders." Didn't some Scandinavian countries still use So 'n' so's son, or So 'n' so's daughter instead of family surnames? And she knew for a fact in Slavic countries women spelled their family name differently... like added an -a at the end or something. "What about when you get married and take the other person's name? Do you get to use the new name or still have to use the one you were born with?"

Dima thought Professor Tanner was one of the greatest, but there was nothing he despised more than the subject which she taught. At least she wasn't beating around the bush with the lesson, though. Straight to the point. He liked that.

What he didn't like (or understand all that well) was Arithmancy, so he let his peers do the question answering this go around.

Hopefully, they wouldn't be sitting too long. The sixth year was already a little restless.

Fourth Year
Default catching up

This being the first class scheduled since his return to school after being kidnapped and trapped in a dungeon, Sabbath had made an effort to make it to the classroom on time. Even still, he had only just managed to get himself in the door with moments to spare . By the time he'd arrived most of the classroom seats had already been taken. He gave his greeting to the Professor and made his way along the rows to find a seat, making his hellos to some of the familiar faces he passed. Hey Hady, he flashed a smile as he passed, How's your guitar practice going? he said. It was a rhetorical question, he didn't really expect an answer as the class was beginning. He'd catch up with her later.

He gave a little wave and smile to Kitty as he moved along the row "Hi". He saw Noelle too, and gave an unethusiatic greeting, moving past her and taking the only available seat left further down in the row. He loosened his scarf a little as he took his seat and looked at his neighbour as she spoke. She was a blonde girl about his age (Haddie) he'd not met before. He chuckled at the girl's suggestion of a flying lesson instead of a classroom lesson. "You're not wrong, I'd much rather be out flying too" he said, offering his hand and a smile "Hi, I'm Sabbath". He glanced around, he couldn't spot Noelle's little sidekick, Hope, anywhere as yet.

Shortly after, the lesson began. He wasn't about to pretend to know what the professor was on about with her question about family numbers. Instead he took out his notebook and quill, jotted a quick note "We need to talk" and tore out the page. Swinging back on his chair legs, he scrunched the note into a ball, and pegged it at Noelle further down the row. It clipped her on the shoulder and rolled onto her desk. He hadn't bothered signing it, he knew she'd recognise the handwriting.

Hope ran into class and noticed that there were no more seats available. So she snuck to the back of class and sat down on the floor. Listening to the students and the professor. She didn't know anything about Arithmancy. She would definitely have to pay attention in this class. As she got settled in and started to look around she noticed that her cousin and Sabbath were already in class. Here she was, probably the last in class and the two people who haven't been in class for certain reasons beat her. She needed to step her game up. She looked around and saw Kitty. She gave her a little wave, but didn't want to disrupt anymore than she already had so she started jotting down what everyone was saying.

Her brain was already starting to hurt and they hadn't really even started class yet!

"It is based on your surname, yes," she nodded. And the basic explanation of the process was there as well. This was a very knowledgeable first year! Sometimes Tiara wondered how these first year students knew so much.. she certainly had not been that student, but she had not come to Hogwarts until fourth year, so she was hardly a normal case.

A very good question from a very good student. But before Tiara could answer, a second very smart student jumped in and touched on the same subject.

"Miss Guidry is correct," she said to Tenacius. "The family name number tells you what traits you were exposed to or inherited from your family, whether through biological relation or through marital association." Tiara had picked up little quirks from Jason's family, and they hadn't even been married five years yet.

Maybe?
Tiara nodded. "Yes, you must also reduce the sum you refer to, but your basic premise is correct." And actually, the vague quality of his answer worked well. "And you are correct not to refer to a specific family member. The calculation takes into account the legacy of generations."

See, Tiara actually liked to see students that were completely lost. Not because she was cruel, but because that meant their horizons were about to be broadened. After all, learning was what her job was all about!

He has no idea what any of this is about....

And then Mel asked a most VALID question. Yeah what about adoptees Professah?
The professor chuckled at the young man's response. "No, Arithmancy is hardly ever about just picking whatever one desires. I am sure your father has a reason for his fascination with the number five, I just do not know exactly what it would be.." And she stopped there. Because as a logical, numbers-oriented person, she just could not condone gambling with its ridiculously low odds or winning.

She nodded at the reference to the master numbers. "Indeed, people seem to always forget about the master numbers, for some reason." And considering they were master numbers, she had never really understood that.

Family name number ... He remembered reading that chapter in his text book. He raised his hand, but the students who answered before him already covered more than what he knew. It seemed silly to repeat what they had said. "I - I agree with what they said. Also, your family name is related to your spirits and that is why we study it."
Oh, had anyone mentioned that last connection yet? Tiara couldn't remember. "And your spirit is molded by the influence of those who come before you, yes." It was the whole 'nature versus nurture' argument. But Tiara sort of figured whether it is nature or nurture, either way it's your parents' fault.

Hmm. She appreciated Rachel's response, but the last part was quite a bit off topic. "Master numbers are a bit far afield from today's topic, but I would be happy to speak with you outside of this class about it, Miss Watson," she finished with a smile. It was not a telling off: on the contrary, she encouraged questioning, as it was how intellectual curiosity was aroused. But time was short today, and she wanted to make sure they had enough time for their activity.

Right. Surnames, and numbers? He sure knows how to find it. That one’s easy: it’s either they use the Pythagorean Method...or the Chaldean one, but the ‘what’ of the question, he was unsure of. Not much new here, but that was hard to do when so many others had given their take before. "Correct, Miss Valentine. And sometimes people do not like what it says about their family, but then that provides growing opportunities."

Oh no you don't. Why the boy had thrown it when she was so close boggled her mind, but she wasn't about to let anyone throw projectiles in her room, even if it was only some paper. "Thank you," she said, snatching it up. We need to talk. Heh. "Yes we do, Mister Gimenez. In my office, after class." And no, she wasn't giving that note back.

Now, onto more academic endeavors.

"The family name number is calculated by giving each letter in one's surname with the corresponding number. Then, simply add all the numbers together and reduce down to a single digit or master number." Which had already been briefly alluded to earlier by Rachel. She made her way to the board, preferring to show the calculation by hand.

This was the point where Ariadne suddenly realized exactly how LONG her last name was. Now she had to find a number for each letter and add them all together. It probably wouldn't take her THAT long, but she was just anticipating it would. She took out a fresh piece of parchment, a quill, and some ink. Dipping her quill in ink, she wrote out the letters of her last name.

G R E I N G O T H
7 9 5 9 5 7 6 2 8

7 + 9 + 5 +9 + 5 + 7 + 6 + 2 + 8 = 58
5 + 8 = 13
1 + 3 = 4

FOUR (4): You inherit a belief that hard work is the right way to work, a sense of cautiousness, thoroughness, and self-discipline.

Hmm. So according to this, the Greingoth were hard workers and really went after what they wanted. Sounded about right.

Let your light shine || Be the sun || You're important. Always.

Noelles head was down when she heard Sabbie come in. She looked up and saw him wave and smile at others but give her.... An almost icy stare. What?? Noelle was confused because she hadn't done anything. She furrowed her brows at him and watched as he took a seat away from her. Which was also un-like him. Okay.....

Turning back to the front of the class, she concentrated on the professor. That's what truely matter right now. Her studies. She felt something hit her shoulder and looked over it to see the balled piece of parchment on the ground by her. She was about to reach down to retrieve it when the professor stepped up and grabbed it.

Noelle blushed and looked at the professor and saw Hope get a chair the next minute. She wished that chair was closer to her. She gave a look at Sabbie again, tilting her head at him briefly before looking back down at her parchment paper. She needed to take more notes. Okay. Chapter two and chapter 27. Noelle flipped to the page and wrote her name out. now to figure this out.

Tia smiled politely when the first year eaglet, Sam took the seat next to her. No doubt the young one needed assistance with the challenging subject of Arithmancy, which of course, Tia would provide as necessary. Family name numbers. She knew what those were, but she just sat there and listened to what her peers had to say about the number as she jotted a few notes down for interesting things said that she didn't know.

Flipping to Chapter Two in her textbook, the Head Girl looked over the familiar Pythagorean Number chart. Though at this point she could probably work out what numbers to assign to what letters if she had to, but when a chart was readily available, why shouldn't she take advantage of it? Besides, Sam might need it.

Carefully writing her surname in her notes, she followed the line underneath it with its appropriate numbers:

M-A-N-C-I-N-I
4-1-5-3-9-5-9

4+1+5+3+9+5+9 = 36 = 3+6 =9

Interesting. She had the same Family Name Number as the Professor. But it also kind of made sense, given their Ravenclaw nature. "You alright with these numbers, Sam?" Tia asked, turning to look at the younger Eagle.

So they just couldn’t pick one out of the air? Maybe he ought to ask his dad why always the number 5. He was kinda hoping to just pick 10. Because its easy to remember and hello its in his name.

And they actually have to crunch numbers. That’s always come easy to his dad, but since this curly top didn’t have to do much arithmetic in his life thus far he doesn’t really know how good he can be. Except that he still counts with his fingers. Always.

So was that how they did the Family number thing? It looked.... Simple enough? Yeah he can do that. So grab the book and do that maths. Here we go:

S A L A N D E R
1+1+3+1+5+4+5+9 = 29
2+9 = 11
1+1 = 2

So he got a 2? He turned to his textbook and read up what it means:

Wow... This says that he is very peaceful and loving. Hmmm..... Well he liked peace but he sure didn’t shy away from the action. He likes to collect things though that much was true. But yeah... Kinda not him? But wait he was a Salander. DOES THAT MEAN HE"S NOT A SALANDER???

Cue internal panic.

But as he glanced down the page he spotted an 11. Wait HE had an 11 too. Did that count or?....

He kept reading anyway:

Now THAT sounds more like him. And his dad. Uplift, encourage and inspire others? Check check and check! He don’t know much about the spiritual living part (have they met his dad? Pfffft). But his blue-green eyes stayed on the last part of the paragraph: You will learn from life through many tests that illuminate certain universal truths.

Huh. The Sorting Hat said the same thing to him.

Spooky. Cue X-Files theme.
