The Royal Observatory, Greenwich played a major role in the history of astronomy and navigation, and is best known as the location of the prime meridian. The observatory is situated on a hill in Greenwich Park, overlooking the River Thames.
The group lands in an area hidden from all muggle gazes in thanks to several large bushes. Hopefully no one has become too queasy from the trip, but if you have those bushes are right there to...you know...help you out. After handing the portkeys back to Professor Flamsteed, he instructs you to keep your bum bags with your special entry tickets and muggle money on your person. REMEMBER! Under NO circumstances are you to break the The International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy. After making your way up the hill as a group, you approach the main gate and are greeted by a sharply dressed docent in dark purple who waves as you pass with a cheerful, "Welcome to the Royal Observatory, Greenwich!"
Now through the main entrance, you find yourselves to the left of the Meridian Courtyard, as Professor Flamsteed reminds you by pointing to the guide maps you picked up while still in the Astronomy classroom at Hogwarts. After instructing you all to get them out and briefly going over the various activities he hopes you will be sure to take a look at before needing to catch the portkeys. "Don't forget, meet back at our meeting location no later than 3:15," he sternly reminds the group. "Now get a move on and enjoy your day of scientific inquiry and discovery!"
ACTIVITIES OOC: you do NOT need to do every single one of these activities for full participation credit for this lesson. I would like you to pick AT LEAST 2, ideally 3, and RP accordingly. There is no real post minimum for each activity as long as the content is there. Just have fun with things and, remember, your character is in MUGGLEDOM.
Also, since we are all RPing in the SAME thread, please please PLEASE title your post with the LOCATION & ACTIVITY with which your character is participating in so we can all keep track of where we all are and find others to play with PLEASE AND THANK YOU!
Think of a planetarium as a tour bus of the Universe taking you on amazing journeys to explore and experience the wonders of the night sky.
Combining real images from spacecraft and telescopes with advanced CGI, all projected onto a fully immersive dome, the Planetarium can fly you into the heart of the Sun, transport you to distant galaxies, show you the birth of a star or land you on Mars.
The Peter Harrison Planetarium at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich is now London’s only planetarium, and features state-of-the-art HD projection technology, visualisations based on real scientific data and real astronomers and seats 120.
Reflecting ourselves and the universe around us, mirrors can take many forms and they are vital components in many of the telescopes which astronomers have used to explore and understand the Universe. Artist Matthew Luck Galpin used his blacksmithing skills to rework meteorites by heating, hammering, grinding and polishing them into mirrors called ‘Anvilled Stars’.
This process echoes the formation of the planets, pulled together and shaped by gravity, heat and rotation. The meteorites themselves formed when the Solar System was young; they are the left-over remnants of the material from which the planets were made, the building blocks of the Earth and everything on it.
Now you can create one too! Simply present the special ticket to one of the three blacksmiths and they will help you through the process so you can take home a truly one of a kind souvenir.
Astronomy Inspires gallery
SPOILER!!: description
See how the universe expanded from the smallest and how our solar system was formed. The Astronomy Inspires gallery showcases an orrery from the 19th century which demonstrates the motion of the planets. Alongside is a state-of-the-art projection wall showing the how the Universe formed: from the Big Bang to now in 4 minutes! With many interactive displays, there is much you can discover about how the scientists mapped the seas and the stars!
Just past the entrance to this part of the Royal Observatory you will have the opportunity of touching a 4.500,000,000 year old meteorite! During the early life of the solar system the meteorites were part of the asteroid belt and thought to have reached earth between 6000-4000 years ago, falling in Campo De Ciela (Field of Heaven) in the Argentine desert after a journey of millions of years.
The 28-inch Greenwich refracting telescope is the largest of its kind in the UK and the seventh largest in the world. Completed in 1893 as a replacement for the 12¾-inch Merz that originally occupied its position, it was commissioned in 1885 by William Christie, Astronomer Royal between 1881 and 1911. It was designed to keep the Royal Observatory at the forefront of contemporary astronomy and more active in the growing disciplines of astrophysics and photography. The job of constructing the telescope was given to Howard Grubb, an Irish optical manufacturer who was then the world leader in the field.
Although the telescope was removed from Greenwich to Herstmonceaux in 1957, it was used for research into double star systems throughout its working life until its retirement in the late 1960s. It was returned to Greenwich in 1971, and has become a central part of educational programmes at the Royal Observatory. With the recent addition of a computer-aided guidance system and CCD camera, it continues to work as an excellent visual aid to observing the night sky.
While nighttime provides a more optimum environment, if you wait in the queue long enough you can take a peek through this telescope. We are sure you will still be able to see something - most likely a planet.
Flamsteed House is the original Observatory building at Greenwich, designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1675 on the instructions of King Charles II. The Observatory was built on the site of Greenwich Castle, which originally belonged to Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester (brother of Henry V) and was often used as a guest house and hunting lodge by Henry VIII. Be sure to check out the two time galleries while you explore around here!
But that is not all Professor Flamsteed hopes you will see. Circled on all of your guidemaps is the Octagon Room. The room was designed to observe celestial events including eclipses, comets and planetary movements. However, the positioning of Flamsteed House meant that the original purpose of the Observatory could not be fulfilled from the Octagon Room. With big windows, the room was perfect for watching the sky, but not ideal for positional observations, because none of the walls were aligned with a meridian. Most important positional observations were actually made in a small 'shed' in the Observatory gardens, though King Charles II remained blissfully unaware of this. The telescopes are fully operational and ready for you to take a look through!
The bright red Time Ball on top of Flamsteed House is one of the world's earliest public time signals, distributing time to ships on the Thames and many Londoners. It was first used in 1833 and still operates today. To view the Time Ball you will need to exit the house and watch from the Meridian Courtyard. Each day, at 12.55, the time ball rises halfway up its mast. At 12.58 it rises all the way to the top. At 13.00 exactly, the ball falls, and so provides a signal to anyone who happens to be looking. Of course, if you were looking the wrong way, you had to wait until the next day before it happened again.
Meridian Courtyard
SPOILER!!: description
Since the late 19th century, the Prime Meridian at Greenwich has served as the reference line for Greenwich Mean Time. It can now claim to be the centre of world time, and was the official starting point for the new Millennium. 22 October 2009 marked the 125th anniversary of the Greenwich Meridian as the Prime Meridian of the World.
The meridian line in Greenwich represents the Prime Meridian of the world, Longitude Zero (0° 0' 0"). Every place on the Earth is measured in terms of its angle east or west from this line. To stand astride the line is to have one foot in the eastern and one foot in the western hemisphere of the earth – just as the Equator divides the northern and southern hemispheres.
The Prime Meridian at Greenwich passes through a massive special telescope called a transit circle. The transit circle was built by Sir George Airy, the seventh Astronomer Royal, in 1850. The cross-hairs seen in the eyepiece of this transit circle define Longitude 0° for the world.
The 'universal day' is measured from the Prime Meridian. It is the average of a year's worth of 'natural' days and is a scientific time scale used irrespective of time zones.
Coolest thing to do here? Walk and/or straddle the Meridian Line, which represents the Prime Meridian of the World – Longitude 0º!
Although the name Astronomers’ Garden is recent, this is the oldest of the gardens at the Observatory, the land having been enclosed when the Observatory was built in the 1670's. Now trapezoid in shape, it has had various names, including: ‘The Lawn’, ‘The Terrace Lawn’, ‘The Terrace Garden’, ‘The Upper Garden’ and more recently, ‘The Home of Time Garden’ (1998–2008). The present name, ‘The Astronomers’ Garden’ is a contrivance dating from 2009.
Unique to this year, the garden plays host to a special exhibit called Longitude Punk’d to celebrate the 260th anniversary of the Longitude Act being repealed. A show where Astronomer Royal John Flamsteed appears in thanks to his time machine is both educational and entertaining. Best of all? After the show is finished you can go up and explore the time machine and other steampunk elements including photoshoot opportunities in costume and wigs with your choice of steampunk prop (including a vehicle and telescope!)
Gift Shop & Cafe
SPOILER!!: description
While you won’t find astronaut ice cream here, there is still plenty to spend your muggle money on! Next door to the gift shop is a humble little cafe that offers choices such as sandwiches, gratins and other classics - including stellar parfaits.
Checking his sundial watch, the professor gleefully announces that everyone is free to go about as you please...KEEPING CERTAIN THINGS IN MIND! And mentions something about living long and prospering before running off himself to bask in the glory of the day.
Have fun and be smart!
OOC: please make sure you have posted in this thread departing from the Astronomy classroom BEFORE posting in here. It doesn't matter if you are just joining us now. Anyone and everyone is welcome to come!
I will leave this thread open for several days and will give at least a 24 hours notice before it will close. I will be around to answer any questions you may have so please feel free to shoot me a VM or PM if something comes up!
NOW GO HAVE FUN BEING WIZARDING CHILDREN TAKING OVER A MUGGLE LOCATION AND SANCTUARY OF SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY!
Angel was totally enjoying this field trip, now though she had to figure out what she was going to do, she looked at the meteorite and then she touched it, how cool was that... she would love to go and explore space and see if plants did grow on a planet, maybe Pluto or Saturn or somewhere like that.
Angel continued to looked around this room, it was amazing and it was totally interesting, she could see why it was called Astronomy inspires, she was in love with it and if it wasn't for the fact her main goal in life was to be an Herbologist, she might actually find herself being inspired by what she had found, when she got back to school she would tots be drawing some of the stuff that she had seen in this place.

She was good? Good. Then he was good. They were good. All was good.
What was better, was the chocolate star she was offering him, he beamed at her across the table. "Thanks," he replied simply, unable to refuse the offering. When did he ever say no to chocolate? Or well... how often did he say no to chocolate? Because it couldn't be denied that he had done so before.
The chocolate didn't last long, not much did when it concerned his stomach and sensory wellbeing. He loved all things sweet.
But at least she agreed to accompany him. He'd do better with her to keep him out of trouble, or else he'd probably just play hooky and try to catch a bus into town. They had bus services outside, right? Nevertheless, ROCK TOUCHING.
Zeke led the way, holding the door open for Hady to pass through first, as per their negotiations, and soon they found themselves in the room with halls that had STUFF in it. there were cases with items and other displays, there were lights and animations glowing on the walls.... but he walked right past all those things. Boring. Rocks were less boring. In fact, he wondered how awesome a dragon made out of SPACE ROCK would be. Where the heck was Amur when he needed her?
"Here it is!" he announced triumphantly, turning to Hady. "Four point five billion years old, see, told you it was old." And without further ado, HE TOUCHED IT. Rubbed his hand on it. All over it. His world was now complete, and his field trip was officially worth it. Because there was nothing else here.... right?
Hady grinned at him when her offered piece of star chocolate was accepted. No one could turn down chocolate. Especially star shaped chocolate! That she was offering none-the-less! It just wasn't possible. Yum.
After enjoying her last bit of sweetness she let herself be lead towards the Rock Touching Gallery place or whatever it was. Yeah she wasn't entirely even sure where it was she was going. Oops. The company was welcomed of course as it always was when her bestie was concerned. Sorry everyone else.
When they finally came to it had she was told by the Gryffindor just how old this rock was she stared at it. A very very old rock. Hady smiled a little bit and nodded. "Incredibly old," she agreed. It was. There was no denying the fact that it was an OLD rock. After Zeke had pet the rock or rubbed the rock or whatever it was the boy was doing she simply laid her hand upon it. That was all. Her hand rested on the rock lightly as she continued to look at it. Could she like make a wish on this really old rock or something, or was this is?

As Janelle pondered her next stop, her stomach made the decision for her. The constant growling told her that it was time to visit the Cafe. Checking her map once more, she headed off in that direction. When she arrived, Janelle took a moment to check out her choices. At that moment, she felt like she could eat anything and everything that was present in the Cafe. Finally she decided on a turkey sandwich and some french fries. The elaborate parfaits were so tempting. Never one to pass up a good dessert, Janelle decided to try one. She took her money out of her fanny pack and paid for her meal.
Janelle chose a table with a good view everything and sat down. Deciding that this was a good time to people watch, she took a bite of her sandwich and sat back. As she ate, she watched the people go by. Janelle often entertained herself by making up stories about the various people she observed. This one was a student on break from school and that one was an astronomy nerd on holiday from America. It helped her pass the time and she always enjoyed using her imagination.
Finishing up her sandwich, Janelle tore into her parfait. Yummmm. It was soooo good and she took her time, making sure to savor every bite. Janelle was rather surprised that she hadn't run into any of her classmates in the Cafe. She had expected to see someone here. Maybe they had come earlier or had yet to arrive. Taking her last bite of parfait, Janelle licked the spoon clean. Wouldn't want to miss any of the goodness, now would she? When she finished, she stood up and carried her tray to the trash can. Now there was another decision to be made. Should she go to the gift shop or head to another exhibit? Decisions, decisions.

Ohh! A question for him! Adi grinned at Polly. That was a mighty easy one. "To the time when Newt Scamander was alive,'' he told her promptly. Yes, yes! That man is and will always be one of this Hufflepuff's heroes. "I would have liked to go on the same adventures and stuff that he went on.'' Maybe he could go on a bit of that during college? But he had so many plans already that he would just have to see how things went. "So, what about you two? Benny would probably go back to the time when there were loads of Dragons around.'' Hehe.
...........................
Hungry, hungry Hippogriff here! The guy bounced on his feet, waiting for his friends' reply... his dream of food only to be dashed by Polly. LOL. Naaah, she didn't dash his hopes. Food was something they could always get to after sometime but he definitely understood she had a passion about plants. Why stand in her way of checking out them some more?
"Alrightey,'' Adi told her. "We don't have to but we'll go soon, right?'' Polly definitely did not want to hear his stomach making the unfortunate noises of a dying whale. "Try to resist all temptations to walk out of here with their plants, Polly.'' Teasing! Adi was only teasing.
So... let the plant exploration commence! Maybe his fellow Puff had some fun facts about one or two of these plants.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

How'd he make it, anyways? Did it actually work? Could she try it? Could she HAVE it?
She stood and admired it for as long as she possibly could before growing awfully fidgety. Glancing around the garden, she lingered by the time machine for another moment before coming to a decision and sitting cross-legged in front of the funny wig man and resting her chin on her hands. Was this the show that the pamphlet thingy had talked about? Norah looked over her shoulder to check if Yoongi was going to catch up. Had he read that there was a time machine too? 'Cause that part was so wicked cool that he really should've been running to catch up, at this point. She might've done a bit of jogging to get here first, but nobody had to know that.
The sixth year beamed at Norah as she said she needed sunglasses to see him. “I know right? I’m shining so brightly that anyone who looks at me has to wear sunglasses” he held his head up and pushed his chest out all macho even though he wasn’t and felt good. It didn’t matter if she was joking or not, he lived for compliments like that.
“Well, I think he’s related” he said as a matter of fact and looked over Norah’s shoulder to the map she was holding in her hands. “Kind of hard to miss you know” he laughed as he leaned back from her. “I mean, you literally wrote “getting to know you in Ancient Runes” “ And he did see the expression on her face when he had told her it was cute. Because it was! She could have just wrote her name at the bottom of the letter instead of secret santa because it was cute how she even identified herself in an anonymous letter. He was a bit disappointed that she did not know who her secret santa was. “Ah, very good at secrets eh? I wonder who that is” he looked away , pretended to be interested at the map she was still holding and hid a smile. Should he tell her?....nah.
He jumped in shock when she suddenly put him out of his thoughts and shouted A GARDEN right next to his ear. He rubbed it and looked at the map better when he saw the garden as well. Gardens were usually really pretty. With flowers and all. But they were in the muggle world now and it was still cold so he doubted there would be flowers around this time. Siiiigh.
“HEY! Wait up!” he shouted after her as she was already out of the Flamsteed House. He knew that she was a fast walker but seriously “Slow dooown!” He jogged behind her, trying to keep up. Merlin’s beard why was she always in such a hurry? He found her standing in front of an oddly made machine and he raised his eyebrow. “What’s that weird thing?”

It was old... VERY old, and he'd now officially been there and done that. He could safely cross off: TOUCH REALLY OLD ROCK FROM SPACE, off of his bucket list.
Mission accomplished.
But really, he was bored. He needed entertaining now, or else finding a bus or some randoms to give them a lift was going to move to the top of his list of things-to-do-on-this-field-trip.
"Anywhere you wanna go?" he asked, once he was sure Hady was done with the rock too. Yeah. It was just a rock. Though that had him wondering... how many people had touched it before them? It was hardly a clean rock was it?

"Uh..." Hady shrugged not really minding where they went next. There wasn't really one place she wanted to see anymore then the others but she did give a suggestion anyhow. "The Peter Harrison Planetarium?" It might be interesting and well if not at least they'd get a chance to sit and just chill. Either way it was something to do for a little bit.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh woooooowwwwww.
Rooney's eyes were wide as he perused shelves of interesting things. He actually wanted one of absolutely everything, but knew that he couldn't and would have to choose carefully. The best of it was that he had came to get food and something to tame his vom-breath. That could wait, though, because the twelve year old was INTRIGUED by absolutely all the wonders of the world right now. The space wonders. OH the glow in the dark star stickers for the wall. OH WOW THE SPINNING TOPS THAT LOOKED LIKE PLANETS AT CERTAIN SPEEDS.
OH MY CHEESE.
Was that real? A build and paint rocket model?
STARS were literally in his eyes as he leant onto his knees to get a better look at the packaging and the words and the everything and oh wow he was getting it. That was it. This was actual love. ACTUAL LOVE.

Ok, that film was SO COOL. Caleb was a bit disappointed that they hadn't made a huge night sky on the ceiling of the planetarium like he'd read about, but they had done it for...just a bit during the intro, so he at least got to SEE it even if it was just for a few moments. Space movies were always super interesting, but also super scary - because they made him realize how SUPER HUGE space really was, and how tiny they all really were in comparison...yikes, it made him shiver!
Alright, now what did he want to do next? Easy - GIFT SHOP. And also time for a snack? But first he wanted to get a little model of the solar system for his dad. It seemed like something he would really like...belated Christmas present maybe?

Benny absently listened as his two companions talked time travel. He had a good clue as to the answer to the question posed to his friend and sure enough Adi confirmed it. "Such a Newt fan..." he mused quietly with a chuckle. Not that he himself wasn't a fan of the man given his connection to all things creatures. The badger went off to explore the possibility of going back in time as Paulina stayed with him as he kind of expected.
Soon enough though, the two of them were rejoined by his bestie craving food. Should they move on? Probably, given Adi was only going to get worse in his desire to eat. Benny chuckled at the second child-like vibe he was getting from the other boy. Why had he never made note of this before?
At least Adi wasn't pushing. But checking his watch, he took note of the time. "Maybe we should if we want to get anything. Not too much time left." How had the trip really gone that fast without their notice? Oh wait...that joke clued him in into the how....they had been having fun with each other.

With his new play thing paid for, Rooney wandered around in hunt of something to eat. He'd already picked up a packet of "space dust mints" when he came to a rack of sandwiches and struggled to make the almighty choice between them. What he really wanted to do was look more at the model rocket in his hand. He wanted to read the box more, he wanted to check out the size, he wanted to just make and paint it right now, but knew that he would have to wait. Maybe he'd see if Miss Charlotte wanted to help him with it. If it didn't interrupt her having a boyfriend. Surely making a rocket wouldn't?
..Maybe it could be a rocket for her snails.
OH YUMMY. YUMMY YUMMY SANDWICHES.
Now, the choice.. Did he want the "Meat and Moon" (ham and cheese) or the "Alien Autopsy" (avocado spread and salad)? He wasn't entirely certain that his stomach would handle the idea of an autopsy in his sandwich, especially after how sensitive it clearly was today. So he opted for the funny titled one full of cheese and went to pay for it alongside his mints and a bottle of juice.
Orange juice to be exact.
Then he went to sit down at a table, nibble his sandwich, sip his drink and lovingly stare at his toy... Lovingly... Did you know that you could get engaged here? Roo wondered why he hadn't seen anything like that before, but then it dawned on him that the only people that would probably do that would be the Head Couple and there was no way he wanted to see that. Or even be on the same planet as that...

Gosh, was Adi really that hungry? Paulina thought that maybe she could spend 10 minutes more at the garden, but it didn't seem like it would happen. She didn't want her friend to starve.
"Okay, I just want to look for a minute longer. I need to sneak the plants into my bag while you two make sure the coast is clear," she cracked going off of Adi's comment. Really though she was enjoying this garden and would love it if there was one like this at Hogwarts.
After a moment, she agreed that it was time to move on. Benny was right, they didn't have all the time in the world. "Okay, let's go before Adi starves." Maybe she'd get a salad or something while they were there.

What kind of knowledge was she were they seeking, though? Without the slightest hesitation, Soph shrugged and responded, "All of it. Everything." When had she been one to not want all the nitty gritty details, Flammy? She wanted to know everything there was to know, or at least anything he thought was important enough to share with them.
While she was wiggling to make herself comfortable on the sofa, Zander's question was answered - the man had a favorite spot in the ROOM, for Merlin's sake. Yeah, she guessed he'd been there quite a few times. At his pointing upward, she craned her neck and gave a long, hard squint at John Flamsteed. So that was him, huh? "I think you should dress like that some class, professor. You should teach, like, a whole lesson on your family history. All about the Flamsteeds and their many successes and advances in astronomy. Like, not in a bragging way or anything, but it's an important part of history, wouldn't you say? Your family's legacy?"
She was smiling, genuinely believing that this was a very good idea, and she also wanted nothing more than to see the man tear up over such a sentiment.
What? So she wanted to make a professor cry. Sue her.
She'd humor him, though, and offered up a question, her gaze flickering to Zander's and silently attempting to communicate to him that HE should ask questions, too, because animated, passionate Flammy was the BEST Flammy. "What's the significance of this room? Why's his portrait here of all places in the house, or are there loads more portraits of him elsewhere?" Was it just because it had a nice view of everything? Or did something big happen in THIS room?
All of it.
Of course.
What he got for asking a Ravenclaw.
Chuckling at the Head Girl's lesson suggestion, although not entirely dismissing it either, he merely shook his head while a faint smile tugged at the corners of his lips. A man who took great pride in his family history, it was more of a game with him to see how long it took the general population of Hogwarts to notice the connection. Nearly a decade now...give or take the inquisitive student here and there. Same reason he did not want the Observatory rolling out the red carpet when he arrive.
Among other reasons. Ahem.
"I'll think on it, Miss Brown," he saluted. If nothing else he could break out of his Spock comfort zone for Halloween? Next year.
...
oh.
Ahem. Anyway?
"Well, although I am sure you have already read this elsewhere, this room is one of the last the surviving interiors by Sir Christopher Wren who the architect of St. Paul's chruch in London. But that is more a significance for modern times, I suppose. Originally, this room was used by astronomers to observe eclipses and comets. And those two clocks over there by the entrance, just to the left of the door were crafted by Thomas Tompion in 1676. However, Flamsteed's widow sold them and they were made into long case clocks, so those are replicas you see now. The one there on the far right indicated sidereal time, which was essential for use of the long telescopes you see by the windows." He paused and gestured towards a pendulum in a case elsewhere in the room. "Although that over there is the pendulum from one of the original clocks. Flamsteed and ompion agreed to use a new type of mechanism in these clocks called the dead-beat escapement which became the standard for precision pendulum clocks, not unlike the one we have in the Clock Tower at Hogwarts."
Although that was a multipurpose clock, as are most things in the wizarding world.
Looking down, the Astronomy professor checked his sundial watch and managed to mask his disappointment.
"Sweet solstice, look at the time," he said, showing the watch to both the Head Boy and Head Girl - who probably could not make heads nor tails of it since the watch never seemed to actually "work." "Almost time to start heading back to our, er, meeting location."

Which is why it was almost a miracle that the astronomer had even heard Miss Brown's voice. But he had, so there was no need for concern.
"Ah, Miss Brown. Mr. Adair," he greeted with a small salute. "Gladly, but you may need to point me in the direction of what sort of knowledge you are seeking." There was a lot that could be said about this place and this room specifically. Some things which he could not speak of right now given some of the present company.
Plucking Pebbles up from the seat beside him, Airey scooted off to the side and gave the crimson fabric a few pats to invite them both to sit down.
"But between us, in terms of aesthetics, this is my favorite spot in the room. Nearly perfect view out of all the windows. There is a reason why John Flamsteed's portrait is hung in this location," he winked while pointing upwards with his index finger at the painting above them.

Among other reasons. Ahem.
"I'll think on it, Miss Brown," he saluted. If nothing else he could break out of his Spock comfort zone for Halloween? Next year.

Flamsteed's reaction to their presence was a bit strange, kind of like he was pulled out of some sort of daze or something. But the man still remained so serene. It was weird seeing him like that, not jumping around and flailing. Zander wasn't sure if he liked it. But there was a different kind of intensity in the man this time. One that didn't really need flouncing around to make it evident. And though Zander didn't want to admit it, he was quite curious. Not as much as Sophie Brown, clearly, because who the heck had time to hear EVERYTHING? Not Zander. But he sorta did wanna hear stuff.
The Gryffindor still stood a bit further away from Sophie and Professor Flamsteed, but when the man patted the spot indicating for them to join him in sitting... Well Zander waited for Sophie to go first before slowly walking over and sitting beside her. Were they really just gonna sit here and stare at a picture? 'Cause no offense or anything... But he was curious, but not that curious.
They were on a COOL FIELD TRIP and they were gonna SIT here and STARE at a PICTURE?????
Typical.
As for the questioning, he let Sophie Brown take the reigns on this one as well. Instead, he sat quietly... Curiously... Kind of pouting too 'cause really, it was just a portrait was it not? It didn't even move or anything. Was this other Flamsteed guy a wizard too?
But he stayed quiet. A quarter out of respect. A quarter out of curiosity for previously posed questions. A quarter out of not-knowing-what-more-to-add. And another quarter because really he wanted to explore the rest of the observatory and staring at a portrait was kind of a weird thing to be sat doing.
But as Sophie Brown's resident Golden Retriever, he sorta had an obligation to stay. And respect. That too. Right.
Also because now Flamsteed was talking and that tended to go on for a while. So he sat, taking in the information, not knowing whether he'd ever remember it, but deciding it was better to listen than to stare at a portrait for much longer. So he casually nodded his head along, to indicate he was listening or something. Looking over at Soph, because he could tell she was just taking every ounce of this in with full enthusiasm. It was her thing. She did that.
And then before he knew it there was a watch being shoved towards his face and actually uh, Zander couldn't figure out what any of it said, but he pretended to understand that their time was almost up anyways. 'Cause what kind of moron doesn't know how to tell time? Ahem. "Oh, uh, right." The Gryffindor slowly lifted himself from the seat, giving Flamsteed a respectful sort of smile. "Thanks for sharing all that with us, Admiral," giving the man an awkward salute before looking back over at Sophie Brown. Was she ready to start heading towards the meeting spot?/COLOR]

Not half bad at all.
While his inmate went at explaining, Blaise went next at the telescope, having waited to give the girl the chance to use it first. While he looked at all the many wonders, he considered what the Ravenclaw said, you know about there being better ones elsewhere but this one being special 'cause of the Prime Meridian. "I guess that makes sense." So did charming your eyes, but he didn't suppose Muggles could do THAT.
Stepping away he gave a firm nod. "Garden sounds good. Less people we have to shove through." Which...would work out in their favour. Kid was well aware of all the dirty looks he'd gotten them on the way over here.
"I heard they have a time...machine." He said, as they got closer to the greens. "What'd you think that does?" Did they really need a WHOLE machine to tell them what time it was? Kinda ironic giving the location of this place, huh?
Yeah, there were a LOT less people here. Davie thought that people would really want to see the... uh, time-traveling astronomer... and there he was! THERE HE WAS! Crazy! Wait, that couldn't be the actual guy... Davie tugged Blaise a little closer, forgetting in his curiosity that they were attached. Oh right. There the guy was, with a.. a wig.
Blaaaaaaaaaah. That was disappointing. "S'not real," he murmured to Blaise. "The only time machines I know of are time-turners." He coughed afterward, as though demonstrating that he wasn't talking about real magic or anything, so the Muggles who overheard him wouldn't be suspicious. "Uh, it's a good effort though. The guy looks REALLY into it." Plus he seemed to be trying to dress like a wizard who was trying to dress like a Muggle.
Was that what steampunk was?

Had he... gotten away with it? Yes? The answer seemed to be 'yes', but Daxton kept moving quickly away from the gift shop, knowing better than to linger anywhere near there for too long. He wanted to find somewhere to sit and play a game with his new illicit deck of playing cards, but that was perhaps also an unwise decision, so he kept moving.
After a few minutes of walking, Daxton found himself back near the very location where all the Hogwarts students had gone their separate ways. This time, instead of heading away from the Meridian Courtyard, he continued on into it.
There was sure to be nothing here that was anything near as interesting as the gallery, or looking through the telescope at the Dome (which he had not even managed to do), or the Flamsteed House (which he had only passed and decided not to enter, on account of how busy it had looked), but Daxton thought he might like to find the meridian line. He did not have a watch, but there was likely little time to do much else by this point.
Still as barefoot as he invariably was - he had managed to go the entire day sans shoes, and was not regretting having even brought them along, as they had been more of a hindrance than anything else - Daxton approached the meridian line, and then stood by it, staring. It did not look like anything special, and he supposed in the grand scheme of things it was not very special at all. He could not quite decide his own opinion of it.
For a long moment, he simply stood looking at the line, considering it, and then at last he stepped forward and sat himself on the floor, directly on the line. Longitude: 0º.
Of course, now he was sitting down, and with little else to do, the temptation to get out the stolen cards was strong. After thinking for a moment, Daxton did decide to wrestle something out of his pocket, but when he withdrew his hand, he only brought out the map of the Royal Observatory, and proceeded to look over it with a critical eye as he by now had realised that it had not been to scale at all. This was a very important matter.

Norah beamed at Yoongi when he finally arrived, taking a step closed to the railing around the time machine. "You snooze you lose." She considered giving him a playful nudge like he had before, but that'd mean stepping closer which was secondary to the super cool TIME MACHINE to be admiring. There'd be plenty of time to admire Yoongi. Not that she was going to do that. Okay maybe, but only 'cause he liked it so much. She was being a good citizen, okay? It'd be an awful waste not to.
Ahem. Time machine. RIGHT. With a sweeping gesture with her arm as if she'd invented the machine all by herself, she informed him, "It's a steampunk time machine! That's what the paper thingy said, anyways. I saw the end of the show too, and that bloke with the funny wig pretended to be The Flamsteed Astronomer Guy and everything." She shot him a sideways look before turning back to the machine and leaning forward on the railing. "Too bad I didn't have a time machine like this so I could go back and see who wrote me my secret santa letter." She DID want to know, after all. A tiny little thought in the back of her brain wanted to talk about HER letter some more, just in case he'd call it cute again, but she told the thought to shut up as she surveyed the rest of the garden.
With just a look over her shoulder to see if Yoongi would follow, she moved on to her next discovery--a BIKE-ish thing. Or something that looked like a bike, anyways. It was much cooler than the one she had at home, though. Maybe that'd been a precaution on her mum's part because everybody knew Norah had a horrible tendency to ride her bicycle into trees. It wasn't her fault, okay? It was just a thing that happened when you spent too much time trying to get through forests without doing too much walking. Who had time for walking, anyways.

Oliver did not like the word different to apply to him and Ellery. Obviously they were different people, but he didn't like to be marked as apart from her in some way; which was stupid because obviously they were not exactly the same people. But he couldn't help his discomfort, though he did his best not to show it. Dot wasn't being mean about it, she was just making observations.
So he just shrugged. "We are different people. We cope differently, deal with things in our own way." He looked down at his shoe, losing his train of thought. What would Ellery say to that? "Biology. No two people are exactly the same."
Obviously, Olly was in agreement about the necessity of having chocolate, and Dot hopped up to the counter to order for them both. Mint chocolate chip with chocolate sauce sounded perfect, and she'd even let him have the bulk of the ice cream. She just wanted a few spoonfuls, anyway, and he could have the rest.
Ice cream in hand, Dot pointed out a table for them to share. "Biology, yeah. I'm adopted, though, and I wonder sometimes if I have a brother out there in the world who is sort of like me but not exactly, and I wonder if my baby brother who isn't related to me at all will be anything like me just because we have the same parents. So it's just... interesting. I dunno. Is that dumb?" It was probably really dumb.
She dug into the sundae, taking a drippy spoonful and licking the sauce from the bottom of the spoon. "What do you think of Astronomy? Of Flamsteed?" The Admiral. Dot scoffed internally.

He would THINK ON IT! HOW EXCITING. Soph BEAMED at that, giving him a happy nudge and a nod of approval. "Y'should. It'd be the best." She meant it, too.
As STORYTIME BEGAN, Soph settled down beside the professor on the sofa, her hands clasped in her lap and her eyes locked onto the man's face, giving him her FULL attention. Originally used to observe eclipses and comets? Sidereal time for long telescopes? Pendulum clocks? WICKED. Soph grinned and nodded in understanding throughout the whole spiel, her goosebumps returning as she took in just how deep the history WAS in this very room.
"There were loads of astronomical advances that happened here, then? This is like... mega cool, professor. We're sitting where some of the GREATS have studied the heavens, including your family, at that. No wonder y'came here. Is it your favorite place in the whole Royal Observatory?" She bet it was, and frankly, she couldn't blame him. "M'glad you have this place, professor. S'like... s'like coming home in a weird way, I reckon."
How special for him to have a place like this, a place where he could see loads of others appreciating his ancestors, too. Probably choked the guy up to see so many people going in and out each day, showing interest in HIS family's legacy. Ugh. It almost choked HER up a little bit, too.
She was so, so happy for him, and it showed in her eyes and her smile.
Flammy's watch, though? She had no idea how he read that thing, but with a bright smile, Soph rose and shuffled beside Zander, giving him a look of gratefulness for him coming along to share in that moment with Flammy, too, before addressing the astronomer once more. "Yeah, thanks, professor. It's been... m'glad... thanks for all of it." For tolerating them interrupting his zen time, for being willing to share, for... everything. All of the last six and a half years, really.

Catching the eye of one of the docents in the room, the professor gave his nose two taps followed soon by a wink before turning his attention back towards the two seventh years. Meanwhile, the docent had exited the room to go take care of whatever business the astronomer's signal had indicated.
"It is certainly one of them," he nodded in response to Miss Brown. "But it is astronomically hard to pick just one."
True story.
Saluting to the pair as they left, Airey decided to spend a few more minutes just sitting where he was when an announcement began broadcasting over the loudspeakers.
"Attention all students of Professor Airey Flamsteed. The time of your departure back to school is approaching. Please return to your designated meeting space immediately, and thank you for your visit. We hope you enjoyed your time here at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich"
Waiting in their secluded location until everyone arrived, Airey distributed the portkeys once more in instructed everyone to hold on tight.
"In 3...2...1"
