| | The Observatory Feel like looking at some stars? You've come to the right place. From here in the Hogwarts Observatory you can see a tiny fraction of the 400 billion or so stars found in the Milky Way Galaxy. This circular but spacious room has been locked and opened as many times as there have been Astronomy professors staffed at the school. The huge telescope that former Hogwarts Astronomy professor, Professor Anteres, had put in years ago is still here and fully operable. Students are very welcome to try and use it. If you need a hand Professor Flamsteed is always somewhere close by and can lend you assistance. If the giant telescope is too much there is always smaller telescopes stored away in the cupboards around the room which you can borrow and use as you please as well as other astronomy objects.
Large star charts are pinned to the walls which anyone is free to study for own leisure or school assignment. Don't try and take the charts down though, as they are charmed to warn if somebody tries to remove them.
Stargazing is an activity best practiced at night and therefore the observatory remains unlocked. Students adhere by a curfew and after that hour no students should be found out of bed. If you desire to study the heavens after curfew, you need a signed note from Professor Flamsteed showing that you are allowed to stay up after hours. If caught after hours without a signed note you can expect that there will be consequences like loss of house points or detention.
The observatory is place for scientific inquiry much like the library is a place to immerse yourself in books, since it’s a shrine to our massively beautiful universe. Please respect any teacher or student spending time in the observatory by not running around or shouting in high pitched voices. Just because Professor Flamsteed isn't currently in the observatory doesn't mean he isn't watching what is going on. OOC: you do not HAVE to RP your character asking permission from Professor Flamsteed in his office before posting here after hours and may pretend that you received permission. Also, please keep in mind that while looking at the stars can be a romantic endeavor, that is not the purpose of the observatory and any mischief may result in points being deducted or detention.

Seriously, the lioness didn't have any idea how to write this essay. UGH! And actually Davie did offer her to hear a little part of his essay. "Well, if you don't mind." And don't worry, she's not gonna copy on his work. Never! All Ava just needed now was a little bit of inspiration. "Not really," Davie answered honestly, with a small shrug as to her brother's talkativeness. "But we have a boy in our dorm who doesn't talk AT ALL, he just writes things down, so everyone is more outgoing than him, honestly." And she probably knew who Davie was talking about, so he just nodded a little and then looked down at his parchment.
Right. "So I'm starting off with an interesting bit to get the professor's attention, and then I'm going to go into a description of the crater, what I saw of it through the telescope, and what I learned of it from my textbook." He might just pull in a few fun facts from a library book too, to really impress the professor. "Here's a sample for you," Davie prepared to read.
"Being all alone on the observatory tower, I looked down and out on the school grounds first, noticing that Hogwarts was about as quiet and peaceful as the desolate surface of the moon. The big difference between the silent school grounds and the silence of the moon, however, is that the moon's surface reveals its rocky history, and the school's history is only told through textbooks. The moon's history is told through various impact craters and lava flows left all over the moon's surface...." He looked over at Ava to see if she was still listening. "So do you need help coming up with an exciting start to your essay?"

| Astronomy HW # 1 - Post # 4 Otter This World ♡ Catpurrccino ♡ Slotherin ♡ Pandamonium Fiddling around with her telescope's position a little Hady knew she'd be able to possibly see some different craters in the moons surface. With two already found and listed on her parchment beside her feet the fourth year snake only had one more to go. And with as interesting as all this was to her she also found it a bit confusing and slightly overwhelming as well.
Lifting herself fully upright once she'd finished positioning her telescope and making sure it was clearly focused once again Hady was ready to move on. Peering into the lens she looked through it up at the moons surface. Some careful adjustments being made with the scope gave her a better angle abling her to finally spot the last crater she needed after a few minutes.
There lying not to far from the first crater she'd found was another. Bending down and grabbing her textbook she scanned a few pages until she was able to match up a photo on one of it's pages with the image through her telescope. According to the book she was now looking at an impact crater which laid one the south-southwest side of Copernicus on the Mare Insularum this one being called Reinhold.
Kneeling down she once more wrote down her finding on her parchment before packing away her parchment, quill and textbook into her bag. Slinging the bag over her shoulder and getting to her feet she fixed her telescope to fit back in it's carrying bag and then with her wand cast a levitation spell on it to bring it all the way back down to her dorm. Now she just had to write that essay.

| Astronomy homework #1 - Post 4 ♥s her SS family l Wifey is MINE | Naughty Niffler l Whittysaur l #awkwardturtle<# Shifting the position of her telescope a little, Paulina was slowly making her way downwards from where Copernicus was located. She knew that there was an area on the moon that was called the Southern Lunar Highlands; it was in this spot that a lot of craters were located. Even though it might be difficult for her to identify any in particular, she wanted to see how well she would do with it.
Thank goodness there was no shortage of craters on the moon! This assignment would be a lot harder if the terrain was similar to that on Earth. As it was there was only one side of the moon that she could look at. Otherwise she might have been able to spot the South Pole–Aitken basin which was the largest, deepest, and oldest impact crater on the moon. That would have been pretty cool.
Continuing to move her gaze downwards, Paulina refocused the lens until she got a perfect view of the craters. When she reached the area of the moon that had to be the Southern Lunar Highlands, she tried to discern any craters in particular. Honestly they all looked about the same to her, but then her eyes landed on one that seemed to be more defined than the others; it didn't seem to be as old as its neighbours. Smiling, she consulted her textbook so that she could identify what she had seen.
Scanning the page, she found what she was looking for. "Tycho." She made a note of her finding. |

"So do you need help coming up with an exciting start to your essay?" The one who didn't talk at all? Yeah, she knew that person. Daxton Prince. That kid was weird, glad that her twin brother wasn't like him. Well, he almost turned into that kid if he kept buried himself around the books and not to go socialize with everybody. But well, who cares now? Teddy could do everything that he wanted and so could she.
The young lioness then listened to what he had written for his Astronomy essay. The foreword seemed very interesting, but too long. She didn't think that Flamsteed was gonna read the boring part. That man seemed like a straightforward person. "Your word is great." She complimented. Well, she didn't lie. Davie seemed like a good writer. "Well, I think I'm gonna write it at the common room. It's almost late and I'm afraid that Flamsteed will see us here and he's gonna think that we had do something.... non-astronomy related." Yeah, she did read the gossip paper that told her about what happened here before.
She packed all of her stuffs and said goodbye to Davie. "Nice work with you, Davie. See you later?"

| Astronomy homework #1 - Post 5 ♥s her SS family l Wifey is MINE | Naughty Niffler l Whittysaur l #awkwardturtle<# Pleased with the success that she was having with her homework so far, Paulina felt that she would be done the assignment quicker than she had originally anticipated. Maybe she could even have her paragraph written up before bedtime. She was already thinking that she would probably write about Tycho because it was a relatively young crater and she found that just as interesting as the really old ones.
Heading back to her telescope, she began moving it around once more. She was going to stick with the highlands because it was more heavily cratered than the lowlands. She had been reading up a lot on the moon so now she felt that she had a pretty good grasp on the geography. Actually Astronomy was very fascinating in her eyes. Even Professor Flamsteed's oddness was rather endearing now that she had gotten quite used to it.
Adjusting the focus on the telescope a little, she moved her gaze upwards a little. Paulina wanted to see if there were any interesting features that she had missed earlier. Maybe she would be able to identify a crater that didn't stick out as plainly as Tycho had. As she searched her eyes landed on a crater that appeared to be really ancient. The shape was a little like a hexagon, and consulting the book she learned that it was Albategnius.
Awesome, she was done. Not really wanting to stop looking at space, Paulina set about putting the telescope away and packing up. It was almost time for bed but she could always come back later and try to find some constellations and planets. Smiling at the thought, she waved goodbye to Cinna and headed back down to her common room.

| Astro HW 3 Gaga Mafia Monster : MURPHY : Kelvin's SS!BFAM : Roro's Evil Twin : Ravlyndor : Gopher As he made a note of seeing the see of tranquility and wrote down some descriptive comments below that, Milo shivered. It was getting kind of cold now. The first year fumbled with the gloves in his pocket before getting them over his hands. He rubbed them together to get some heat going in his fingers before putting his eye to the telescope again.
Moving it across the surface of the Moon, he raked it for more discernible craters. After a minute or two, he came across one that, after a quick glance at the book he could name. He scribbled the name of the crater below the first one: 'Sea of Moisture'.
What was up with all the seas? There wasn't any water on the Moon. |

| Astronomy homework, post 1 Made of Awesome | Ern-la the Best-wa | TZ's Apogee It was late late late, and the only reason that was awake and willing to climb stairs was for dumb Astronomy. She wasn't even that fond of Professor Flamface anymore, not after all the times he'd let her personally down and damaged her tender sense of the universe. And now he had her out of bed on the night of the full moon to look at CRATERS. She could make craters. She didn't need to be up at all hours to look at them.
But here she was. Fine. Dot set up one of the telescopes available for their use and polished it up before pointing it at the moon. At least she wouldn't have any trouble finding that big glowy thing in the sky, unlike finding itty bitty stars. Big glowy thing... found.
And craters. Could she go back to bed? Dot yawned hugely and closed her eyes.

He didn't know whether or not it would work but the boy was desperate not to go back to Charms or Transfiguration class so any chance was better than no chance.
Entering the Observatory, it took him a while to realize he wasn't alone and an even longer while to realize it was the Slytherin Prefect but when he finally DID, he grinned. "Dot!" DID SHE REMEMBER HIM?? HI. The boy hurried over to her, hardly able to believe his luck
With her here, SHE could use the spell on the telescope then they could both look for craters.
What a relief.

| Astronomy HW Post 2 curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog Alright, time to get HIGHER and closer to the moon to pick out some more craters. Mainly he was just looking for different vantage points to really get the best views of the moon that he could - and he figured the closer he was, the easier it would be to pick out individual craters.
And he was right. Once getting up to the tower and picking a nice place to settle down, he took his telescope and peered up to the moon from his high new stargazing position. Lots of craters to pick from now...he decided to label one near the top of the moon this time since he did the bottom previously. He took his quill and labeled "Plato" on his chart before packing up his things and heading off to get yet another vantage point for cratergazing.

What a relief. Upon hearing her name, Dot jerked back to fully awake. Who... oh, baby ickle person! "Blaise. Homework buddies again, I guess," she waved him over before wondering if he even wanted to work near her. Did he want to be alone to do Astronomy? He was kind of stubborn about classwork, and he needed help in classes with a lot of wandwork. Like... maybe this was one he wanted to do by himself.
"You can work with me, if you want. Or I mean... you can... I don't know. There's a telescope right here next to me and I know the spell. Or whatever." Mentoring was hard. Everything was hard. Prefecting was impossible.
Dot decided to do the ignoring thing while Blaise got settled, and she refocused (ahem) her attention on the telescope. Still pointing at big glowy thing AND she knew how to make it easier to see the moon up close. "Lens focalis." The moon came sharply into focus, and now Dot could look for particular craters up close and personal.
Only... they all kinda looked alike, didn't they? Guess it was time to haul out the old textbook.

He said, giving a wide dimpled grin, fully agreeing they should work together again. It was nice working with her last time. Most other people would have told him to suck it up and draw his wand but not her, she let him play catch the way he wanted and when they were done, he returned the ball like everything was normal. "Can I use your telescope? You've already charmed it and I don't wanna put you too much out of your way." Casting spells was hard, how could he possibly ask her to do it a second time just to make up for his failures? No siree, he could just use hers. "I like working with on account of how nice you are to me." Nodnodnod.
Blaise was actually willing to just stand here and wait for her to be done looking then he'd take a look. He didn't mind, patience was kinda his thing when he was reluctant and right now there was nothing that would get him to draw his wand and charm the other telescope or make her do the same.
Waiting it definitely was. "What are we looking for exactly?"

| Astro Hw 4 Gaga Mafia Monster : MURPHY : Kelvin's SS!BFAM : Roro's Evil Twin : Ravlyndor : Gopher There were a lot of craters on the moon. Milo was looking through his telescope lens and judging the size of the ones he came across. He knew that all of the craters would be acceptable for the homework assignment but he wanted to find the biggest or more interesting he laid his eyes on.
The Sea of Tranquility he had heard about previously before even taking Astronomy here at Hogwarts. It was famous, so he had picked it. The Sea of Moisture crater was chosen for its odd name (well it was just really dark so maybe it was deep but when he had seen the name he just HAD to pick it). How could it be moist if there wasn't any water on the moon?
For his third crater, Milo was looking for something tiny. Finding a small crater would be a bit harder and he concentrated as he moved his telescope in very tiny increments until he finally spotted it--just there in the top left quadrant of the visible face. Checking his textbook's diagram he saw that the crater's name was Plato. Milo used his quill to add some notes about Plato to his parchment.
There, that was finished. He could do the writing portion when he work up. It was cold and getting late. The Claw packed his textbook and parchment up into his bag and took his telescope down. Once he was finished packing, he left the Observatory and made his way back to Ravenclaw Tower. |

Waiting it definitely was. "What are we looking for exactly?" Gosh, he was super duper adorable. No cheek-pinching allowed, Dottie G. She shifted the telescope juuuuust slightly until she spotted a good-sized crater, and then shifted her book over to see if she could identify which one it was. "Don't tell anyone you think I'm nice. I'm pretty sure that Slytherins are supposed to be the opposite of nice."
Check the book, annnnnd Theophilus. Dot put her finger on the page and glanced back into the viewfinder. Yup. Theoblablablah. "You can use mine, and we'll find craters together. Which, by the way, is what we're looking for. Because the professor is obsessed with them, which is weird. The moon is literally the closest bit of space you can look at, so why are we staying so close to home? It's like going on vacation to your closet." Dot was still mad at Flamface, ok?
"That one there is Theo... Theophilus. It looks like a donut!"

"That one there is Theo... Theophilus. It looks like a donut!" His face lit up the moment she agreed to let him use her telescope too. Hogwarts was something else. It tried preaching that you couldn't get through anything without magic--'cept in Muggle Studies class--but here he was proving them wrong. Didn't even take his wand with him and he was still getting his homework done. All the supplementary reading he did really helped too. Made sure he didn't fall behind. "I won't tell anyone, promise but my friend Olly's a Slytherin too and he's really nice. So was my mum. There were some girls that tried ripping my notepad apart when they caught the quill taking notes of them though..." THOSE Slytherins hadn't been nice at all.
After she'd taken a second look, it was his turn to glance through the telescope. It was absolutely AMAZING just how well he could see the moon after a charm was added--you couldn't get this kind of view with just any telescope afterall. "Does he ever look at anything else? Anything...not so in our closets?" He was still new and didn't know how the Professor did all his lessons so he couldn't really say but his quill WAS jotting down everything the Prefect said in regards to the Professor's moon obsession and closet tendencies--don't ask him, his quill wrote it. "Theo..phi..lus. Heyyyy...it really DOES look like a donut." It sounded familiar. Like something he'd recently read.

This kid should probably be a Ravenclaw, since he was so interested in learning new stuff. Or maybe a Slytherin, since he somehow was crafty enough to get through life without having to use his wand. That's right, kid... this Dot was onto him.
As for Olly... Dot didn't know the kid yet, but she'd have to... Oh! Backflip Ellery's brother? Merlin, these kids were all connected, weren't they? "I'm sorry someone was mean to you. If you tell me who it was, I can give them a very stern talking to. I'm allowed to do that, on account of I have a badge and a very bossy serious face." All true facts.
"And 'course he does. We do look at lots of things, which is why the moon is a bit disappointing. Granted, I've never been there, and I have been to my closet." She was looking at her book again, noting the craters that were closest to Theophilus. "Okay, look... next to Theo, there's another crater sort of hugging up against it named Cyrillus. And then there's another one just south called Catharina, which is very pretty. The name, I mean. Can you see them?"

She was even willing to talk to people who were mean to him! "I can have you list by Monday!" For real. There were some hostile people behind the walls; real nice until they caught his quill scribbling every word they said then it was the exact opposite and his little legs didn't always carry him far enough in a fast enough time.
Bless those staircases, they were always his last line of defense. "I've been to my closet too." He informed as an obvious mechanism for fitting in. It was all to show just how much they had in common so she'd continue helping him with homework when he needed. No one wanted to hang with a little kid--especially one who'd never been to his closet. Pfft. That was so 3 months ago.
Blaise shifted the telescope just a little at her latest instructions. Cyrillus? Catharina? Oh yeah....he could see those. "I see 'em. One's attached and the other's riiiiiight there." The boy stepped away from the instrument. "Go ahead and take a look if you'd like." In the mean time, he turned to his own floating quill and notepad and regarded the information it had already taken down. The rest he would dictate later when he got back to his dorm.
