| | |  The Observatory
 Feel like looking at some stars? You've come to the right place. From here in the Hogwarts Observatory you can see a tiny fraction of the 400 billion or so stars found in the Milky Way Galaxy. This circular but spacious room has been locked and opened as many times as there have been Astronomy professors staffed at the school. The huge telescope that former Hogwarts Astronomy professor, Professor Anteres, had put in years ago is still here and fully operable. Students are very welcome to try and use it. If you need a hand Professor Flamsteed is always somewhere close by and can lend you assistance. If the giant telescope is too much there is always smaller telescopes stored away in the cupboards around the room which you can borrow and use as you please as well as other astronomy objects.
Large star charts are pinned to the walls which anyone is free to study for own leisure or school assignment. Don't try and take the charts down though, as they are charmed to warn if somebody tries to remove them.
Stargazing is an activity best practiced at night and therefore the observatory remains unlocked. Students adhere by a curfew and after that hour no students should be found out of bed. If you desire to study the heavens after curfew, you need a signed note from Professor Flamsteed showing that you are allowed to stay up after hours. If caught after hours without a signed note you can expect that there will be consequences like loss of house points or detention.
The observatory is place for scientific inquiry much like the library is a place to immerse yourself in books, since it’s a shrine to our massively beautiful universe. Please respect any teacher or student spending time in the observatory by not running around or shouting in high pitched voices. Just because Professor Flamsteed isn't currently in the observatory doesn't mean he isn't watching what is going on.
OOC: you do not HAVE to RP your character asking permission from Professor Flamsteed in his office before posting here after hours and may pretend that you received permission. Also, please keep in mind that while looking at the stars can be a romantic endeavor, that is not the purpose of the observatory and any mischief may result in points being deducted or detention.

They should really be allowed to just keep their telescopes in here, Davie concluded upon reaching the observatory. He'd taken a few wrong turns and almost, almost tried a scary locked door, but had resisted the temptation to tug on the door handle. He was also fortunate to live on the seventh floor. What about the Slytherins that had to lug their equipment from the very bottom of the castle to the very top? This wasn't very fair for them, was it?
He was here now though, and he was determined to look at the moon.... as soon as it was dark enough. On that subject though, could he use the big telescope instead of his average one? And just what WAS the spell to focus a telescope? Setting his up and twisting knobs here and there, Davie let out a big sigh and leaned on a railing. Craters. Mmm, yeah. When was the moon supposed to rise again?

A trip to the Observatory to check out the giant telescope and the galaxies and what not? Yup! That's why Adi had gotten the Admiral's permission since he wanted to be out and about after curfew, using the valid reason of NEWT study. His permission slip was safely tucked in his pocket. The man did want his students to do well, after all.
The seventh year bounded up the steps to the Observatory, taking them two at a time. PHEW! What a work out that was! Nah, not really. He was in shape, you know. Into the room he stepped, pausing a bit to look around. Looks like he was alone here. Not a problem!
With the star charts now catching his eyes, Adi went towards one of them. Hmmm. Studying these surely WOULD come in handy.

So it was starting to get pretty dark up here, and Davie was pretty sure he could see some of the moon's craters, even without having his telescope perfectly focused. Oooh boy, the full moon was bright tonight though, so he was going to try to use a filter on his telescope.
Now, what craters was he going to be able to see? Davie cracked open his textbook to use as a guide.

It was time to do some moon-gazing!
The prospect of lugging her telescope all the way up here from her dormitory wasn't all that appealing to Paulina so in the end she had decided to just use whatever ones were already provided.
She hadn't had the chance to visit this place yet, so she was rather intrigued by all the star charts on the walls. Studying them for a few minutes, she contemplated spending a little time trying to locate some of them after she was done with her homework assignment. Her gaze shifted over to the moon which looked massive and quite bright from where she was standing. She had purposely waited for it too be full because that would make this a lot easier.
Choosing a telescope from one of the cupboards, she worked on carefully setting it up. Ruining a piece of school equipment wouldn't be a good thing even if she was pretty skilled with the repairing charm; it was the principle that mattered and she did not like damaging things that belonged to others.
Reaching into her bag, Paulina pulled out her Astronomy textbook and opened it to the correct page so that she could use it as a guide as she worked.

At first Ava wanted to do this homework together with Teddy, but it seemed like her twin brother loved to do it alone by himself and besides, they both weren't talking to each other now. She was pretty mad at him since he prioritized his study more than his relationship with his sister. So her she was, walking to the observatory alone.
The lioness did spot someone was already there. Was that? Yeah, the Ravenclaw guy from the gobstones viewing area. "Do you mind if I join you?" She asked. Hopefully not. She just wanted to prove that not all Ravenclaws were like her brother and they still loved socializing.

Hady hadn't forgotten about her Astronomy homework. It was going to get done that much was sure. And honestly the only thing that had been keeping her from starting on it already was the fact that her dorm was all the way at the bottom of the castle.
With all her other homework finished and no other plans for the beautiful night she decided to make her way to the Observatory. Wand in hand she was carefully levitating her telescope all the way from the dungeons to here. Mind you she was incredibly careful! Noway was she going to drop her telescope even if she could repair it with magic.
When she finally got there she gave everyone else a light smile and a small nod of her head. Seems she wasn't the only one that wanted to do some star gazing tonight. No worries there was enough room for everyone. Finding a empty spot off to the side she set her telescope down and began to set it up properly making sure it was positioned correctly and the lenses were cleaned. There. Done.
Stepping down she glanced around and taking notice of all the star charts lining the walls decided to check them out. It may just help her tonight with figuring out everything she was looking at.

The perfect time to see all of the craters considering the moon was full. And since she needed to seen every inch of the moon. But the full moon also had it's down sides. Full moon meant werewolves. The seventh year WAS NOT getting kidnapped or eaten by werewolves this term.
That's exactly why she was doing this inside and not outside. Carrying her bag up the observatory. She seen Paulina and waved at her. "Working on homework?" It looked like she was. Cinna found a spot and set up her telescope. Opening up her book to the page to refer back to.
Getting her wand from her bag so she could focus the telescope lens. She was going to use this as a practice for nonverbal. Focusing on focusing the lens lens focalis to herself and making a swish movement with her wand. Hopefully it worked.
Looking into the telescope, YES I WORKED HER NONVERBAL WORKED. First time and everything. Okay anyway let's look at the moon.

And he hadn't found it in his Astro book yet, either.
Soooooooooo.
"I think you can see that one crater at the bottom, without a lot of magnification," Davie pointed out, then drifted his finger down to his book where it said the name of the crater. "Tycho, I think it's called."

A spell to make the telescope being more focus? "Oh, I know that." Grabbing her wand, Ava swished and tapped it to Davie's telescope. "Lens focalis." And she also did it to her own telescope. That's better, she said to herself once she tried to see the moon again from her telescope.
Her eyes followed the boy's finger when he pointed to the bottom side of the moon. Yep, she could definitely saw a crater. And according to Davie, it was called Tycho. She opened her textbook and found the page that explained the Tycho crater. Blablablablablaaaa.... It's too long. Ava then bookmarked the page and continued looking for the other crater with her telescope. "Oh, I found one again, it's on the eastern side, and looks bigger than the Tycho one."

It was Cinna. Turning her attention to the other girl, she smiled. Now she wouldn't be working on the assignment by herself and maybe they could help eachother! Surely professor Flamsteed wouldn't mind that so long as they did their own work. The man was nice despite being rather odd; she found it impossible to picture him angry with students.
"Yep, just getting started!" Hopefully she would manage to get everything done pretty quickly, because she didn't want to be up here super late. Curiously she watched as Cinna cast a non-verbal spell on her telescope. "Nice job." Non-verbals could be a huge pain. Paulina wondered if she she would be able to cast one herself...
Only one way to find out.

Eh? Was that really east? The lioness didn't know since she's quite blind about the navigation thingy. Her bad, she'd rarely excelled in a lesson like this ever since she's in muggle primary school. As Davie had found another one that called Copernicus, Ava tried to find another one. Squint squint. "What exactly that we need to write on the essay, by the way?"

After a few moments of studying the charts on the walls Hady shook her head and wandered back over to where she had already set up her telescope. Kneeling down beside it she removed her textbook, parchment, a quill and of course she took out her wand. Setting those items out beside her telescope she'd be able to take down notes as well as check things in her textbook as needed. Perfect.
Rising to her feet Hady gripped her wand and standing close to her telescope pointed her wand near the lens and gave a light swish with her wand clearly whispering, "Lens focalis". Not sure if it had worked Hady lowered her wand to her side and peered through the lens out towards the sky, stars and most importantly..the moon. Everything was so clear!
Sliding her wand back into it's holster on her wrist she grinned to herself as she looked through the lens up at the moon. A little bit of looking around she finally spotted a crater. It was just a bit northwest from the center of the moon. Leaving her telescope as it was she knelt down and grabbed her textbook flipping through it's pages until she found a page of the moons craters. Running her finger over the pages picture she soon found the crater there that matched the one she had just been looking at through the telescope. It was Copernicus.
Setting the textbook down she grabbed her quill and parchment to quickly jot this down so she wouldn't forget before placing her things down. One down and two to go.

She bookmarked it and later was gonna put it on her essay. "Just three craters." She nodded at the Ravenclaw boy. And now all she need to do was writing the essay. She had her parchment ready, but only wrote her name, year and house. Nothing else. She's not really good in .

"There's a lot of us firsties this year, in Ravenclaw," Davie commented happily. "I didn't realize you guys were twins!" So her last name was Burton, then. First name.... still drawing a blank.

It was a cool evening but Milo found himself at the Observatory of the Astronomy Tower lugging his telescope and wearing a jacket and scarf. He'd also brought gloves (not that it was super cold but he'd be using his hands a lot and it was windy up here and kind of...out in the open) and had them tucked away for now in one of his pockets.
Finding a good spot along the tower's rampart, the Ravenclaw set up his telescope and unpacked his supplies from the bag slung over his shoulder. Once all of that was out, he pulled his wand out of his pants pocket and a slip of paper that he had copied the spell he had to use in order to focus his telescope. He'd spent some time in the Library the day before looking it up and had practiced it in his head a few times.
"Lens focalis." He whispered as he tapped his wand tip to the brass of the telescope. He took a peek through the lens and tilted it until he was able to see the moon.

Homework. Merlin, did he hate this stuff. It was probably one of the only things he wouldn't miss about this place. Actually no, he wouldn't miss the exams either. Or having to wake up early in the morning. Or... Uh, what was the point again? Oh yeah.... Homework. Of course. It was always homework, wasn't it? Terrible thing it was.
Luckily the observatory was right near homebase of Gryffindor tower, so he decided to venture over here instead of heading out on the grounds. #Lazylife. He would've made the trek down to the grounds for any other purpose. But homework? Nah. It wasn't deserving. As he walked inside he noted that there were quite a few others here tonight too, which made sense since Flamsteed recommended coming out during the full moon and all... Those only happened once a month anyways, right?
Anyways, telescope. He needed a spot to set his up. Walking over to a spot by some short kid (Milo), Zander took out his things and began setting up. Merlin, did he sure hope this would go by quickly. He was starving.

Everything all set, Paulina was ready to find some moon craters.
Standing in front of the telescope, she gazed through it and slowly positioned it so that it was facing the moon. It would be a little difficult for her to do this assignment if she couldn't even find the moon. Thank Merlin she was pretty good with this equipment, because otherwise she would be a total fail with this homework. Drawing wasn't her strong suit, so that was the other option right out the window.
Seeing that her lens was still a little unfocused, Paulina adjusted it a little more. Now it was a little easier for her to see.
She smiled as she looked across the surface of the moon. There were a lot of impact craters, so that wasn't the hard part... It would be harder for her to IDENTIFY what she was seeing. That was why having her textbook beside her was such a great help. She turned to consult it so that she could have a better idea of what she was looking at.
Gazing through the telescope once more, a rather large crater caught her attention. According to the textbook, this one was called Copernicus.
Awesome, one down and two to go!
She wondered how Cinna was coming along with her moon gazing. | |

La la la... Just setting up a telescope, don't mind us. La la la.
And.... It looked good? Right? He sure hoped so. Telescope set up was a lot of work. Or maybe he was just slow because he was so hungry. Probably the latter if he was really being realistic here, which of course he wasn't because Zander Adair was not only Head Boy, but he was also Head Drama Queen too. It's how things were done.
Now that everything was under way,however, the Gryffindor reached into his bag to grab for his parchment and a quill. Alright next thing he needed to do was look into the telescope and find some moon craters. Sounded easy enough. Well, sort of easy enough because really, this thing was quite blurry and unfocused. How the heck was he supposed to-- Oh wait. There was a telescope charm somewhere...
He had it down in notes, he was sure. Uh... Flipping through pages of parchment from past lessons, he searched up and down. Must be something around-- ah. The margins. Of course he wrote it in the margins, horrible handwriting too, he should note. "Lens focalis," ah, much much better.
Looking into the telescope again, the Gryffindor began by focusing in on the moon. And now for the craters. He just needed to find a few, right?

Now that his telescope was focussed he could start looking for some craters.
Flipping through his textbook to find the diagrams of the moon, Milo heard footsteps and the door open up behind him. He had company tonight it seemed. (Zander) Turning slightly to see who was setting up next to him, he saw the Head Boy. GASP! Wasn't he Miss Sophie's like boyfriend or something?!
He was. Probably. They were always together. Ahem. Focus on craters Milo. But yes, greeting. "Hey, Astronomy homework too?" he asked the older boy and immediately regretted it. He sounded stupid. What else would he be doing up here and with a telescope to boot.
Moving his telescope around for a second or two on the moon's surface he came across a rather large crater or maybe a collection of craters. Hmmm, after consulting the textbook it seemed that he had found The Sea of Tranquility. | |

Having written down the position and information on the first crater she had found Hady was ready to find another. Returning to her place behind her telescope she looked through the lens up at the moon.
All she could currently see was Copernicus which was mostly due to the fact that she had yet to change the position of her telescope. Carefully moving her scope around just a little bit so she could see a different area of the moons surface Hady then checked once more through it's lens. Was that an impact crater there?! It looked like a large dent in the moons surface.
Taking hold of her wand she pointed it at the lens and cast a simple, "Lens focalis." She needed to be sure she was looking at the correct thing since this was an homework assignment. Now that she was sure she was seeing it to the best of her abilities she knelt down and grabbed her textbook to match up the info on the page to the crater she was looking it.
According to her textbook she was seeing Tycho which is a crater in the southern lunar highlands. Satisfied with this she knelt down on the floor and setting her textbook down grabbed her quill and parchment to right down the notes and crater she had just found.

so Davie knew her brother. Well, that's good. She was afraid that Teddy went being anti-social and barely knew everyone even on his dorm. "He doesn't talk much, does he?" She really knew him very much because hello.... She and Teddy have been together since inside of their mother's womb.
Seriously, the lioness didn't have any idea how to write this essay. UGH! And actually Davie did offer her to hear a little part of his essay. "Well, if you don't mind." And don't worry, she's not gonna copy on his work. Never! All Ava just needed now was a little bit of inspiration.
