A large number of floor-to-ceiling bookcases fill up the library, creating aisles upon aisles of books available for students to read and browse. To make finding books for all years a little easier Mr Kitridge has divided the bookshelves into sections like romance, suspense, crime, history, plants and fungi etc.
To return books just walk up to the appropriate shelf and hold up the book. The gripping charm in place on the shelves will take a hold of the book. When you feel a tug on the book let go and the book will fly up and find its right place amongst the other books on the shelves. When retrieving a book you can use the sliding ladders or if you feel confident with your magic you can use a simple accio charm to retrieve the book you want.
In front of each aisle there is small set of desks which students can use to complete homework, copy notes, take book references or chat. Keep your voices down and be mindful of falling books and other students accessing books around you.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Yoongi hated to admit it but he was curious why Ava kept calling him ... that. She refused to tell him it and he had too much pride to ask her or someone else. So that meant he had to take a trip to the library. Surely there would be mentions in one of these books?! Cause, when in doubt, go to the library!
He walked to the plant section immediatly and started to grab random books. He carried them in his arms until he had a pile and staggered to one of the desks. With a loud -THUD- he dropped the books on the table and sat down on the chair.
He opened the first book, looking at dull text and pretty pictures of flowers. But no matter how much he flipped the pages of the big book he could not find what he was looking for. Nor was it in the next book or in the book after that and after that. "Oh come ON!" He shouted as he slammed the last book shut. Perhaps it wasn't in a book about plants?
Obviously, one of the first places Daxton planned to visit at this school was the library. He'd heard about how big it was, and how many books and topics were housed in here, and was eager to see it for himself. Generally, Daxton hated book shops; they overwhelmed him, particularly as he would find himself surrounded by tomes he could not afford. Not such a problem in the non-magical world, but he'd not dared to steal a book from the shop in Diagon Alley.
It didn't matter so much here, though. These books didn't need to be paid for, so he could read as many of them, as much as he liked. Whether or not there was a late fee system, Daxton didn't bother to check. It didn't matter much either, as he was a fast reader.
Still barefoot after his journey through the corridors, the boy diverted into the library and felt himself relax at once. Books books books. What could be better? So much information in here, about the magical world, mostly, which was the area in which his knowledge was most lacking. But not for long. Not now he had all these resources.
Daxton eyed all the shelves for a moment, wondering (as he always did when he entered a room full of books) how many words were inside this one library, all of them waiting to be read. He calculated things for a moment, before coming to a decision and setting out to look for the Defence Against the Dark Arts section. After that, he would look into the History section, then go from there.

Books. There were books at home, sure, but the majority of their library was a music library and it was dedicated to keeping sheet music of what was in Brian's opinion "Every Piece Ever Written" so that they didn't have to go look it up and print it out. So no, he didn't actually get a lot of magical knowledge from those books. But he had learned that the Wizarding World evolved at a painfully slow rate, because of either elitism or fear of muggles. He couldn't decide. Which was sad, because Muggles were catching up on the whole magic thing with technology.
Didn't some famous person say that sufficiently advanced technology was indistinguishable from magic? He was pretty sure he'd read that somewhere.
So a random history book in his arm, Brian started pacing around as he read. That was the best way he could study and it kept him from falling asleep when the text got boring. What a great bonus, huh? Anyway, so he was walking around, no worries inb his mind because who in their right mind came up to the library at seven in the morning, ON A SATURDAY? That's right, no one. And Brian didn't count because he had a few screws loose in his noggin anyway.
But there was someone there and Brian crashed into him very unceremoniously. Oh no. Ooooooh no. It was a firstie. Ohohohohohoh no. "I'm so sorry," he said quickly, eyes widening. "Are you okay?" Because that was a pretty big mook and Brian was pretty sure he'd hit the kid with it as he fumbled to get a better grip and keep it from falling.
Cinna had only been here like twice in the five years that she had been here. Once during the battle against the fairy tale book her fifth year and once to study for her OWLs. She hadn't been back since then.
She was just walking around looking through the bookshelves. Not looking for anything exactly. Just looking around.

What. Was. The. Matter. With. The. People. In. This. School?!
All Daxton wanted was a few hours of peace and quiet to spend getting lost in the many tomes that Hogwarts had to offer, that was it. Why was that too much to ask? The situation wouldn't have been so bad if the other boy hadn't crashed right into him, but he had, so it was awful.
It was easy to get carried away when looking through books, and presented with so many options and strange titles and even stranger author names, Daxton had apparently become less aware of his surroundings. He got a horrible fright when suddenly someone else, crashed right into him.
If he hadn't been so taken aback and intent on getting the other boy away from him, Daxton might have questioned exactly why it was that everyone in this school seemed so oblivious to the concept of personal space, or were so intent on crashing into people.
As it happened, the boy before him took all his attention. That hit with the book hadn't actually hurt at all, though it ought to have, but ultimately Daxton was angered at the idiocy of the other boy that had bought on the unwelcome collision. He grabbed the book out of the boy's hands and thumped him with it on the upper arm.
... Yes. Now he was okay. Now they were even.
Barely.

Oliver was looking for a potions book, he had forgot to buy one when he was in diagon alley plus he had potions that afternoon. He was so busy looking at the books that he didn't notice a girl until he bumped into her.
Milo ran his finger over some of the titles of the books all varying in sizes along the dark mahogany shelves that he could reach. There were some pretty interesting finds to be sure. His mother had went on and on about the Hogwarts library in the weeks following the morning he received his Hogwarts letter. He had been nervous to leave home and his safe little bubble where it was just him and his mom in their little home in the village but the library was one thing for sure he was looking up to. This was perhaps the largest library of magical information he could get his hands on for quite a while.
And with all of that information surrounding him, Milo was at a crossroads: should he check out Mermish for Beginners or Gobbledegook: This isn't my Vault. Goblin Language Acquisition for Young Wizards.

There was a THWACK.
Brian blinked at the boy in front of him uncomprehendingly. What? Just? Happened? His arm was throbbing and there was no book in his hands. And all that was going through his head was he fact that Wizards had only two wars, both started by the same person. But the way this kid was staring at hi was like there was going to be a third wizarding war because this kid looked really angry and Brian didn't understand ANYTHING about why he was in such a mood in the morning.
Does. Not. Compute.
Rubbing his arm gingerly - because that was a VERY heavy book there - he inclined his head. "That was," he said, struggling for words. They were difficult so early in the morning. "Unnecessary?" Because he didn't do it on purpose? He just wasn't expecting anyone here this early on a weekend except Mister Kittredge. And most people already knew he walked around when he studied. Also, that was painful.

Davie really needed a place to practice his basic wizarding charms, and although the common room could have worked, or somewhere in the Charms classroom or Transfiguration room or even the DADA room, he wanted to practice in the library. He felt very comfortable with books and other flammable objects and in case he needed to reference the theory again before performing the application, well...
Here he was. Surrounded by the right material.
So with a small small bin full of paper under his left arm, and his wand out and lit for some reason in his other hand, Davie wandered down the book aisles. Incendio and Other Common Incantations... that had been all he'd needed... that was the title.... it started with an I.... annnnnnd he stopped short as another boy seemed to be hovering between the G titles and the M titles. I was smack dab in-between those two.
The first year didn't recognize him from behind, but to be helpful and perhaps move the boy along, he cleared his throat. "Gobbledegook for beginners is surprisingly easy to learn," he offered the boy. "I once greeted a goblin in gobbledegook at Gringotts, and he didn't hit me with his cane that day." So his brief-lived flirtation with learning that language had been a total minor success, in case this boy was stuck on goblins too.

Strangely enough, Daxton felt better now. Not that it was all that strange to him. He considered the matter dealt with, now that retribution had been served.
With a look of blatant unconcern, Daxton gave a shrug. It hadn't been so unnecessary in his own mind, so the fact that someone else might think so was simply irrelevant. He turned the book over in his hands to check the cover and see the title, before flipping through and scanning a few pages.
Huh. Might be worth checking out later. In fact, Daxton considered taking this copy for himself, but he wanted to see what other books were on offer first, if there was something more interesting. He closed the book, then handed it back to the older boy.

Having just about decided that he would try Mermish first so he could maybe converse with the Merpeople in the lake if he could convince them to come up and talk to him, he was spoken to by someone close by. He turned slightly to respond to the bit of advice and was surprised to see not just the boy but the fire.
"BLEUGHHHHH NO!"
Milo held his book tight to his chest and flung himself against the bookshelf as if the volume was his child and he was protecting it from a baby-snatcher or in this case an angry villager from a Frankenstein's monster hunt. "Why do you have that in here?" He said pointing at the FIRE. This whole place would burn down, didn't he know??
Oliver was looking for a potions book, he had forgot to buy one when he was in diagon alley plus he had potions that afternoon. He was so busy looking at the books that he didn't notice a girl until he bumped into her.
Cinna wasn't paying much attention to anything around her. She was just looking at the books. Maybe there was something to help her study for her NEWTs.
So far she found nada.
She continued to look as she turned a corner. Some boy just ran into her. "Uh.... Excuse me would have been nice." Rolling her eyes she went on down the bookshelves. Looking for nothing.

"I am sorry!" Oliver stammered as she looked at the girl that he bumped into, she looked like she was in her last year at hogwarts. Oliver decided that he better introduce himself "hello, my name is Oliver James, I am a sixth year".
"I will next time, I was looking for a book for my potions lesson this afternoon!" Oliver told the girl who looked bored. He wished that he had more friends at school, specially when plays so much sports.

...what the? Was this boy mad? Davie didn't think he could handle having another mad roommate, because honestly, Daxton was a bit difficult to live with and if weren't for Aldous, he'd be surrounded by crazy kids at this school. For yes, he recognized the boy (who had decided on Mermish, pfft, how useless) as one of his other roommates.
And what, really, what was he so upset about? Flinging himself against the shelves as though Davie were a human torch... WELL NOT YET, Milo, he was not yet playing with fire.
"It's just a rubbish bin," the bespectacled first year protested glumly. "Just full of paper. I'm allowed to carry paper around, aren't I?"

Wait, there wasn't fire his wand was just lit with a lumos spell. The light and his quick whirl around was too much for Milo apparently.
"Right, uh, sorry. David right?" He knew his name because they shared a dorm room together but he hadn't really talked to him much or any of the other boys in his dorm. He was used to being alone though. "I was just worried about the books is all. They've got to be really expensive."
"Why do you have the waste basket though?" Not too dangerous at first glance at least.

Yeah, uh huh. Davie was still suspicious that Milo might be another one of the castle's weird ones, so he kept a weary eye on him as he was finally able to step around the boy and pick out his book.
"David, yep," he answered quietly as he dropped the book into his wastepaper bin. No need for concern, though, he wasn't going to light IT on fire. As for why he had it... "Don't worry about it," Davie declared, moving away from the boy already and over toward the study tables. Milo could follow, if he wasn't going to SHOUT again...

Don't worry about it? He would well worry about a person trying to light books on fire for Merlin's sake.
His fellow Claw snatched a book he had been eying and was already waking off. Tucking his Mermish book under his arm he hurried after David. He was curious after all.
"Hey wait..." he said trying to catch up. When he got beside him with the same stride he whispered, almost sounding too hard to please, "I won't tell or anything."
Ahem. Leo shot a glance over at Paul with worry, he hoped he hadn't unnerved what he hoped was his new buddy too much. It wasn't his intent at all. It was just the whole section that made Leo extra cautions and on edge and he didn't want anything to happen to his new colleague and potential new friend while they were in there. Attempting to apologize and explain at the same time Leo said "Sorry Paul, it was not my intent to make you nervous at all it's just in here you can't be too cautious. The books can really attack you."
"A book for transfiguration," Leo repeated as he started to lead Paul out of the section again. "Like about animagus transformations or something?" He wondered curiously but he wasn't expecting Paul really to remember since it was such a long time ago. Leo wasn't sure he himself what book he had loaned many years ago if someone had asked him.
Smiling Leo almost reached out to pet Paul's arm as he commented quietly "I think you have to prepare for yourself to take points from the students. They aren't perfect, they'll make mistakes and will most probably break rules that you'll need to deduct house points for as punishment. It's the only way they'll learn right from wrong. If it's any consolation I'm not a fan of deducting points either but if its warranted in a situation then I do it. Let's go check out the bookshelves next. I need to put up a sign there."
Paul nodded. "I assure you--I'm fine. Not too nervous as to want to LEAVE or anything." He followed Leo along, curiously staring everywhere that he could. He hoped he and Leo didn't disturb any studious students!
And.....he sighed. "I know--I know--" he rubbed his face a bit and then ran his hand through his hair. "It will pain me, but I will do it when I must. I don't think it's right to just...take points all willy-nilly though!" he used to HATE when professors did it, all those years ago, now. "I'm glad I will be able to GIVE points to students, though. A boost of confidence, it is." For the well-achieving student, it would be.
"And...I think it might have been on the theories behind Transfiguration...not so much any magical things..."
He peered around at the shelves, smiling at certain titles he thought might be interesting. "I'll have to check out some books. Some of these fascinating--I keep a very wide collection of books in my office--most of them, however, are centered around botany and Herbology."

Before they had made it out of the Restricted Section fully Leo turned on the silent alarm again. He did not want or need any students exploring around in there. His hope was that their will to break the rules and look around in there had turned to dust after the evil book's antics.
He was relieved to hear that he hadn't spooked Paul. As they left the section and headed toward the grand bookshelf section Leo nodded with a glance over at Paul. "Definitely, you shouldn't take points away without good reason to. The students will respect you more if you can justify why you deduct points." Especially when you were new too. You had to set your foot down and take your place.
Beaming Leo said "Yes, giving points is the best. It's a 1000 times better than deducting since its positive and boosting." It sadly didn't happen as much though. He shot a glance to the front desk as they walked noting that no student was looking for him.
As they got deeper into the grand bookshelves section Leo pulled out his wand and used it to set up a big sign in plain sight.

Satisfied Leo wondered if the students would see the fun and indulge him. Books were after all our friends. Turning to Paul he gestured around "You should browse around. I can help you look for something nice to read if you want? A story of transformation maybe?"

Paul just nodded, a tiny bit distracted because SO many books seemed to be greeting him right now. So many. He wanted to pick up one--bring it back to his office! Read it! Mhmm. But he just eyed a few of the more interesting looking spines.
"I haven't had a chance to give any out yet...but I will!" he grinned and watched, curiously, as Leo put up a sign....about talking to the books? It made Paul laugh so much he had to cover his mouth so he wasn't too loud! "Oh Merlin!" he said cheerfully. "That is too adorable! I'm sure some of the students will gripe--but--it's a fun rule." He had his own for his classroom that he still had to put up. And provide the flowers for, yes.
"Oh. I don't know. I'm not even sure what I feel like reading..."

Glancing from the sign to Paul he asked hesitantly. "You don't think the students will go overboard with this rule do you? Like trespassing in the restricted section to talk to the books there and then say I authorized it?" Leo had just now realized that eventuality. It made a small knot of uneasiness form in the pit of his stomach.
It was though gratifying to hear and see that Paul was enjoying the new library rule. "Are you setting some rules up in the greenhouses too? Talking to plants is a common practice isn't it?" At least that was what Leo had been told by his grandmother over and over again was the reason why he in the past hadn't been successful in keeping his plants alive.
Eyes moving around the shelves Leo asked "Any particular genres you tend to read more than others like detective novels, romance, fiction?"
Paul thought for a minute about that..."What? No. I didn't..think of it..no. I don't think so. Don't worry about it, Leo--" He smiled and patted the younger man's back. "I think the rules are juuuust fine." And cute and fun and stuff. No big deal, no need to fret, Leo!
Oh! "Actually, I am. But more along the lines of...positivity and good feelings. Acknowledging each other's good characteristics, yes. But I do have a music therapy room..where you can practice music..playing something, and it helps the plants. At least, I think it helps my plants." He shrugged. Some people would call him a kook...but he didn't much care. He had the research to back up his claims, people!
And Paul had to think..."I really like creative nonfiction. Biographies...how people have overcome hardships...things like that." He smiled.
