As you take your first step into the history of magic classroom on this march afternoon you notice just how dark it is. The only light comes from the setting sun that filters in through the windows and the burning coal in the few cauldrons scattered around the room for heat and a lamp on the professor's desk. Carefully navigate yourself into the dark classroom and to an empty desk without injuring yourself or your peers. The desk setting in pairs of three in a slightly misaligned order that leads up to the professor desk as well as the black board and on the wall to the left of the blackboard a large floor to ceiling book case hasn't changed since your last visit to the Grey Lady's classroom. The air in the room is as crisp and cold as ever, maybe even a little on the harsher side.
Professor Helena is nowhere in sight, but she'll be along shortly.

Alfred. That was a very nice name, and Dot gave him a somber nod, although she was sure the ghost didn't notice. He wasn't actually all that jolly up close, although perhaps it was hard to be happy when you were telling people how you died. Were followup questions rude, or was this one of those topics that a ghost was dying to talk about?
Ahem. That was punny. Dot raised her hand. "Excuse me, Brother Alfred, but how come you got executed? Why didn't you escape or use magic or something? Were they too fast? How do you feel about Muggles as a result of your unfortunate demise?"

Write it all down! Adi was making his notes because the Friar was giving good information. But gosh, he was proud of being a Hufflepuff, wasn't he? Just like Adi! Well, folks. There you have it! If Adi ever decided to become a ghost, he would be as jolly as Friar. But he wouldn't be fat... unless he ate too many sweets and didn't work it off. Oh yeah, he would be pulling pranks for sure, too. So that would have made him part ghost, part poltergeist? Hmmm.
Right now Adi had no questions though. He did like Dot's, however. Valid question. And the 'Brother Alfred'... that was a nice touch. He remained quiet as he listened to the other questions and the answers that followed.

Professor Helena's cryptic response was enough to get Paulina really curious. She really was looking forward to learning more about the ghosts - especially the Fat Friar because he represented her House.
Awww.
He was so adorable with all his jolliness. His name was also Alfred, which Paulina made a note of. She wondered why he didn't choose to go by his real name but supposed her question went with Sophie's and decided to remain silent.

The Fat Friar himself! The room got colder but it certainly got merrier. The Hufflepuff's ghost's jolliness was contagious. Owen ooh'd and ahh'd at the information shared by the Friar. Or should he call him now Father Alfred? Brother Alfred? But d'awww...he was executed. That was not a merry ending.
So why were people asking him ABOUT his death? That was quite insensitive. Owen wanted to know about The Friar's life as a Hufflepuff instead, fostering house pride and all so his question went, "Father Alfred, sir...my name is Owen and I just wanted to know... what was it like walking the halls of Hogwarts during your time as a student here compared to now? What kind of fun did you have?" He wanted to knooow.

"Good, good Friar is correct Adi." Helena acknowledged with a nod.
"Very good Benzi." Helena acknowledged with a nod.
"Yes you are correct TiaMarie. The Friar lived about 2,000 years ago now." Helena commented.
"First, you are correct, i meant the Friar. Secondly you have to actively choose to become a ghost just as your life is about to end and your spirit is leaving your body. Not everyone wants to become a ghost Ava. We are cursed one can say to haunt a specific place until the end of time. Most witches and wizards probably die happy and satisfied with their time on earth and pass on to side of the dead while other chose to linger." Helena answered. Ghosts weren't common.
"Good, good David. It's Friar indeed. If died by the hands of Church officials you'll have to ask him." Helena responded. It was not her place to share a friends secrets.
"The Friar has gone by the name 'Fat Friar' for over 2,000 years. If he takes offense to being called that I do not know Sophie. I have never asked him even, if he is a dear friend of mine. You'll have to ask next time you see him." Helena suggested.
"You are correct Paulina. You may just find out his real name sooner than you think." Helena responed cryptically.
"Good Angel, i was indeed referring to the Friar." Helena answered with a nod.
"Very good Reagan. Yes, I think the Friar does live to being kindhearted and forgiving." Helena answered thoughtfully.
"The Friar does have a real name Dot. But calling him the Friar doesn't make him his less real or less of a person. Helena responded quitely. She understood Dot's emotions.
"You are correct Norah. I am talking about your house ghost." Helena responded with an acknowledging nod.
"Very good Owen." Helena responded with a nod to the first year.
When the last student has quieted down Professor Helena smiled faintly as she spoke. "You are all correct I was in indeed describing the Friar; Hufflepuff's resident house ghost. How the Friar died, what his real name is, and whether or not he takes offense to being referred to as fat you'll soon find out since he'll be joining us in class shortly."
And when you spoke of him he silently floated into the room and up the front to hover next to her. Hopefully a second ghostly presence wouldn't make the temperature in the room drop again for the students sake. Giving her ghostly friend a beam Helena said "Welcome Friar and thank you for agreeing to visit my lesson and share bits of your life story with the students. Whenever you are ready the class is yours." Floating a little backwards to give the Friar some room she let her eyes wander over the students faces.
OOC: The Friar is going to share bits of his life story with the students. Please hold off on asking questions until after the Friar has spoken eg. posted again. Feel free to react to seeing the ghostly visitor though.
And so they were finding out about the Fat Friar's life? Did they have to take notes? What was this teaching them exactly? How would it be useful for understanding OTHER things? Was there a skill to this? Were they going to be assessed on this?
...
Questions. He had MILLIONS of questions... so with idle hands, he listened.

Alfred of Cinn Tire? And WHERE was Kintyre exactly?

She listened to the ghost speaking. Wow, this ghost was really friendly, huh? The young lioness tried not to yawn listening to the Fat Friar (or maybe Father Alfred now) reminiscing his life when he was still alive and kicking. Did she have a question for the Hufflepuff ghost?
Actually she had.
Ava raised her hand and then ask him. "Why did you become a ghost? Did you choose or you felt like you had an unfinished business here?" Curious Ava is curious. Like the Grey Lady explained to her, most wizards and witches wanted to die happily rather than being ghost and haunted a specific place.

"Sir, is there any reason why you chose Hogwarts over your church when you died?" Angel was really curious about that.

Oh man that was so cool. They not not just one ghost professor, but now two! The very ghost they had been discussing just moments before was now in their classroom. And telling his life story too. Olly was not so interested in that, but luckily it wasn't long. He was more interested in the ghost part. And the execution. His hand went into the air when it was time for questions.
"How were you executed?" Not why, but how. Was he hanged? (Hung?) Poisoned? Burned at the stake? That was the interesting stuff. He didn't even stop to think that the friar might not want to answer that. Who would want to give details about their own deaths? If he'd thought a bit before he spoke he might have reconsidered his question. But he was too curious for that thought to even cross his mind.

Ohhhhh! See, he did have a name!
Alfred. She was going to remember. Unless maybe he didn't want to be called Alfred? If he wanted to be called by his name then he would gladly tell everyone to use it, right? Rather then let them all to refer to him as the Fat Friar for so many long years.
Mentally notes were being taken while she listened to those around her ask questions. Any questions that currently came to mind were already being said so therefore she needed not to speak right then. Yep. This was a quiet day for on Miss Hady Lynch.

Well, Gwen was glad she'd brought her sweatshirt. You never knew, in March. But then again, she almost always carried a sweatshirt. And those ghosts were making it COLD!
Alfred was actually a very suitable name for the Friar. "Can ghosts ever pass on to the afterlife, even after being a ghost?"
She wondered whether her brother know about this or not. Probably not. She need to tell him this in her next letter. And Alfred was a nice name. Candice raised her hand in the air "Sir, I was wondering why you choose to be called Fat Friar? Is it because someone gave you that nickname or come out with it by yourself?" She just hoped the ghost wasn't offended by her question. She was just being curious that's all.

He could have been a Saint instead of a ghost! Did the Fat Friar have any regrets in that manner? Davie didn't ask that, see, because he did have a little bit of sensitivity.
Friar Alfred turned to the raised hand and "Mhmm!ed the boy. "I cured every pox case, so the Church was convinced I was a wizard. Why, I was! Settling into her chair, Soph listened intently. So he DID have a name, see? Alfred. Why couldn't they call him Friar Alfred? The part about him being executed wasn't so cute, but... she had questions. Lots of them. Some that were being covered by little Davie, so Soph avoided those topics... but she STILL wanted to know the answer to this one, so her hand went up.
"Sir? Doesn't it... I mean, couldn't there be a better nickname for you than the Fat Friar? S'not like we have to distinguish you from any other friars around here, so why not just the Friar, or a different adjective that better encompasses who you are, like... the Jolly Friar, like Reagan suggested?" Didn't it bother him? Ghosts had feelings, too, didn't they?
The Friar shrugged. "I do--did like eating... and if it makes the students happy calling me fat..." As long as it wasn't a humiliating name.

OOC note:The Friar's account only gets a white screen when trying to view the class thread so that is why his responses are included in this post by the Grey Lady and the Friar has now left the class.
Helena listened silently as the Friar or should she call him Alfred now spoke and interacted in his usual jovial manner with the students. Several minutes the Friar made intentions to leave but before he did Helena smiled at him saying "Thank you for visiting class and letting the students get to know you a little better Alfred." She watched him float out of view before she addressed the students once more. "The time has come for you all to get know me little better. I'm not usually very keen on sharing personal information but I'm making an exception today because of the topic of this lesson. My history is closely entwined with another ghost at this school." If the students knew their history they'd know who she meant.
Taking a breath she began her story "My name is Helena Ravenclaw and I'm the daughter of Hogwarts Founder Rowena Ravenclaw. I was born about 2,000 years ago in the British Isles. When I attended Hogwarts I was sorted into Ravenclaw house. I liked learning and was quite curious, my favourite class was transfiguration. I've been called many names over the years by students and staff like Lady Helena, whispering lady and most often the Grey Lady." Here she stopped to smile at the class before she got serious.
"What led to my violent death was that I envied my mother for her cleverness and importance in history as a founder of this school. I stole my mother's diadem thinking that it could make me wise enough to accomplish importance and notability just like my mother. It didn't. After a time my mother got fatally ill and she sent the ghost you all know as the Bloody Baron to me to bring me back with him to my mother's death bed. I refused and he killed me before he killed himself....."

Interesting answers to those questions. Adi realised the Friar was even more Hufflepuff when he thought. Imagine being a ghost just to come back to help others. #HufflepuffPride Awh, man! Did he have to go? Adi watched as his House Ghost floated off before drawing his attention back to Helena.
She could add Professor Helena to that list, Adi thought. That was his favourite name for her. It sounded so elegant. But yeah, he did know of that bit of story. Such a tragic one, wasn't it? His poor Professor.

Resident Ghost of Slytherin | Hot-Tempered & Not Amused
A solemn entrance as the Bloody Baron floated through the nearest wall. He had only one reason on being there and that was upon the Grey Lady's request. There was no need to introduce himself, everyone knew or should know him by now.
His presence was there, his attention fleeting over the students before the Grey Lady of Ravenclaw.

Olly actually knew her story. His daddies had told him and his siblings at least once before. It was interesting, but did not necessarily make for a good bedtime story. The Bloody Baron killing her before taking his own life. Not exactly cheerful.
And there was the Baron himself. Olly grinned at the ghost and waved. He was the Slytherin ghost, and so Olly had to like him the best. Even if he did look a little scary. And the story of his death was not exactly cheerful. But whose death was cheerful?
He raised his hand to ask the Grey Lady a question. She had not really asked for them, but she had paused and it seemed like a good opportunity. Besides, others were asking questions. He figured it was okay. "What name do you prefer to be called?" It was always important to call someone the name they preferred, of course. He would not want to offend anyone, not even a ghost.
Angel was listening interestingly to the Professor as she spoke about her history, this lesson was just so amazing and now she had to figure out what she wanted to say, she looked at the Professor and then raised her hand. "Professor, do you ever wish you had gone back?" Angel asked. "When you found out why he had come?" Angel wondered what it would be like to know your mother had wanted you but you had refused to go.
The Friar "did" like eating. Sad that he said that and then changed to "did," but Soph almost raised her hand again to protest that he still could eat rotten food, so would that ever have an affect on his physical appearance... but then decided against it.
She'd just been trying to tell the poor guy that she didn't like that nickname for him. Didn't seem right to keep pushing the subject, especially since he'd been so kind to answer her in the first place. She'd leave it at that, then.
As the Grey Lady launched into her story, Soph leaned forward a bit with interest, hanging onto every word. Since when did the woman EVER talk about what happened? Never, probably. Of course, Soph knew just about everything the woman said already from word-of-mouth and history books, but it was pretty cool for Helena to tell the story herself. Monumental, really.
It got a little weird when the Baron arrived, though, just in time to hear the end of what Helena was saying. Haha. Awkward, right? Soph looked between the two with interest, also absorbing the questions of Davie, Olly, and Angel, and considering what the ghost's response would be. They were curious enough questions, so Soph didn't have anything more to add.

So he didn't mind being referred to as fat and he enjoyed eating. How sad that he couldn't do that anymore now that he was dead. Paulina frowned slightly then waved goodbye as he left.
Time for Professor Helena's story, and it was definitely not a happy one. Paulina had no idea what she could say in response to it, as no questions could come to mind. Maybe she was failing at this lesson, but it seemed that other people were beating her to what she wanted to ask.
Instead she watched as the Bloody Baron entered. A slight shiver went down her spine.

There was nothing that needed to be sad nor any questions to be asked. Hady wasn't even taking down notes right then for she was doing an exceptional job listening. Raising her hand she gave a small wave towards the Friar as he left, her attention moving from that ghost onto her Professor when she had began speaking.
Yet another very sad story here. One she already knew mostly but still sad all the same. No questions came to mind once again for she felt it was best to just allow the speaker to speak. Her hazel eyes drifted towards the Bloody Baron upon his arrival but that was all.

At David's question she had to pause to try to remember. It had been a long time since she first been called by that name. Many years had passed since. "It was actually suggested to me by some Ravenclaw students many years ago now that always thought I carried myself like a real royal lady and because of my grey eyes they came up with the name Grey Lady. I didn't dislike it and thus the name has stuck with me." Thinking back she shook her. "No I can't remember any ghosts from my time as a student." Or she had just forgotten?

Helena didn't need to look up to know that he had come. She had always been able to sense his presence. Feeling his eyes on her as usual she raised her gaze to met his eyes briefly before glancing away and focusing on the students. "Everyone, please welcome the Baron he is here just like the Friar before him to allow you all to get to know him better." Turning to the Baron even if she didn't want to, wondering if he sensed the awkwardness and hurt feelings as she gestured to the class. "The student's are yours Baron to share bits of your life story with..." Meaning the ball was in his court.
Resident Ghost of Slytherin | Hot-Tempered & Not Amused
"Thank you, Lady Helena." Such a pity to the Baron on the Grey Lady's lack of interest in her gaze. A fleeting gaze as it were though did wonders with him. The most affection he ever received was a defiant cold shoulder from her. The one his heart belonged to and no one else.
The students were attentive, for once, as all eyes were on him. His deep voice bellowed and echoed smoothly from the rebounding walls, "You may only refer to me as the Bloody Baron or Sir Bloodiness." His real name was reserved for those worthy in his eyes. "I was one of the students sorted by Salazar Slytherin himself into his house here at Hogwarts. I excelled in the subjects Potions and Charms. Where I befriended and fell in love with Lady Helena." It could be argued on this presenting as one of the reasons of her brief acknowledgements as he made no effort to stop.
"I was also a skilled fencer and archer that had began my youth. I assisted the Ravenclaw family in pursuit of the gracious Lady's heart following graduation. When Lady Rowena Ravenclaw fell gravely ill, she personally sought me out to bring back her daughter who had her diadem. How could I say no to that? It was one of the perfect chances granted to win her darling daughter's heart at last." Before, "But I was too rash. Much too rash in my attempt. My desperation and fury blinded over me at her refusal. Of her mother and of my own heart being torn. It was over as fast as that fury came over me before I ended it with myself." There were too many children sitting before to explain the gruesome details once again. "From then on I continue to wear her on my sleeve with these chains serving my afterlife-long penance."
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Adi was not surprised when the Bloody Baron floated in. He didn't like that ghost much. He was rude and full of himself. Naaah, Adi was not in a huff about being told to leave the Slytherin table a few years ago by the Baron at the Start of Term feast. Sure, he had left... but only when he had wanted to. The boy was stubborn.
Anyway, he turned his attention to the Baron again when Professor Helena handed the class over. The Hufflepuff sure was impressed at the fencing and archery skills the ghost possessed. Archery was so difficult as he had experienced first hand. It surprised him that Sir Bloodiness would also admit his mistakes and loss of control at what he did to Professor Helena. Everyone in general should learn to control their negative feelings. Clearly the the Baron lacked that back then. Adi remained silent as he tried not to resent the ghost for taking the Lady's life.
Jet was suddenly more interested as her own house ghost appeared. Leaning forward on her seat, she listened to every word said by the professor then by the Bloody Baron. His way of introducing himself and telling them the name he preferred to be called by made Jet suppress an amused smile.
However, the Slytherin ghost started talking about his story and Jet thought it was getting way too personal. She never expected the Baron to be that open about his feelings for Helena and Jet personally didn't feel comfortable listening to that. One because it was his love story and it was none of their business and two, it was clearly showing his weakness and Jet did not appreciate that.
That didn't mean, though, she would stop listening. That was probably going to be in their exam or at least homework and she supposed she should know all of it.
