As you take your first step into the history of magic classroom on this march afternoon you notice just how dark it is. The only light comes from the setting sun that filters in through the windows and the burning coal in the few cauldrons scattered around the room for heat and a lamp on the professor's desk. Carefully navigate yourself into the dark classroom and to an empty desk without injuring yourself or your peers. The desk setting in pairs of three in a slightly misaligned order that leads up to the professor desk as well as the black board and on the wall to the left of the blackboard a large floor to ceiling book case hasn't changed since your last visit to the Grey Lady's classroom. The air in the room is as crisp and cold as ever, maybe even a little on the harsher side.
Professor Helena is nowhere in sight, but she'll be along shortly.

This was officially the best topic ever for History of Magic! Mostly because Tia wanted to learn more about the spiritual world and what better way to learn than from a ghost itself. Dutifully jotting down notes, the sixth year didn't raise her hand to add to anything because it mostly seemed redundant as to what her peers already stated. The problem with question and answer sessions was that there was only so much one could add.
The Fat Friar, yes, she knew that. Anyone who had been at Hogwarts longer than a year would know which house ghost Helena had been referring to. Was there anything else different she could add about him? Maybe when he was alive which was a long time ago. Over 2,000 years ago.
"That would be the Friar, born somewhere in the British Isles around 982..." Tia commented after raising her hand.

Wait, so only wizards and witches could be a ghost? Muggles not? Back when she was in muggle school and of course she often hears about ghost stories around. So.... muggle ghost were fake, then?
And now the Grey lady continued with the description of a ghost. When she mentioned that the ghost is fat, Ava already knew the answer. "It's the fat friar." She spoke as she raised her hand. Also... "Do you have to choose if you want to be a ghost when you're dead or something? I mean, why some wizards turned into ghost and why some didn't?" She was curious, okay?

Well the professor seemed to like Davie's answer, or at least he was right because she repeated some of it to the rest of the class. Davie's hand shot into the air for the next question also.
"That would be the Fat Friar, ma'am. I heard he was executed by Church officials for being too good of a Healer, basically." Was that true? He peered up at their spirit-ed professor curiously.

...She had gotten a SMILE out of her arch enemy, the Grey Lady? No way. This was... monumental. A little bit scary, though, because SHE WAS SMILING. AT HER. THE GREY LADY WHO HATED HER WAS SMILING AT HER.
Had Sophie Brown and her non-ladylike ways finally redeemed herself in her house ghost's eyes?
Smiiiiling brightly right back at the ghost, Soph gave a simple shrug to her response. Soph didn't know if there was any truth either, but it WAS the magical world, and she wasn't particularly inclined to believe any of this stuff as fact. The world was a very, very strange place, and answers were not always as clear-cut as they seemed. She'd decided that poltergeists were just one of life's greatest mysteries.
As the ghost went into a detailed synopsis of ghosts and poltergeists, giving a very well-described comparison and contrast of the two, Soph took a few notes, just to stay on task and not let her mind wander elsewhere. She couldn't help but wonder, though: were the other ghosts going to join them? Did Helena ask the Baron, the Friar, and Nick to join them? Were they all going to have a big ghost party right here and now? That'd be wicked cool, if so, but when Helena went along to start describing the Hufflepuff house ghost, Soph figured... no, they must not be coming. Otherwise they'd probably come right in and introduce themselves and spiel away, right? Sad.
When others chimed in with the answer, Soph gave a pensive hum, then her hand went up, too. "Miss? Doesn't he mind being called that? I mean, of all names we could call him by, Fat Friar doesn't seem all that kind of a thing to be called for centuries and centuries. Doesn't he take offense to that?" He WAS large, but really. Why not the Jovial Friar? Didn't quite have the same ring to it, but seemed a bit more appropriate.

Man. Who ever thought Peeves was that important to history, huh?
Whatever. The poltergeist was still a nuisance in Zander Adair's eyes. No history could change that. He had already made up his mind, mhm.
And yes, he HAD noticed that the term was all around house spirit and stronger bonds. It was the year of the Hufflepuff. Except, Gryffindor was still gonna win the house cup, so they really should've made the year all about bravery. In Zander's humble opinion... anyway. But the bonding stuff was cool.... So long as there weren't any spider webs involved, Zander Adair was actually a pretty happy camper. Plus no one had died yet. So he'd take it. No deaths and no acromantulas. How bout it's just year of the Hufflepuff every year, then?
Ahem.
And yes, he knew the ghost in mention. Only been at Hogwarts for the past seven years of his life, y'know? So he let some of the younger kids take a go at that one. They deserved it.

Zander Adair.
That was his answer. Fat and short. Fat headed and short brained. What did Miss Sophie even SEE in him?! Rooney was still just so confused about that and he had been trying his hardest to understand it since he KNEW it was an actual thing. And even more so when he found out that the Gryffindor was Head Boy. Because who had really made that decision without being under someone elses command?! Crazy.
He didn't vocalise his thoughts at all, just sat quietly making notes on whatever Professor Helena said and sending occasional looks in the direction of the Head Boy.
Jet genuinely saw no reason whatsoever to repeat everyone else's answer, so she chose to be quiet once again. Not that it bothered her. Actually, she preferred it that way.
So the Slytherin simply sat quietly as the other students said over and over that the answer professor Ravenclaw was looking for was the Fat Friar. Jet didn't know much about that particular ghost, but it wasn't like she was that curious either. She would much rather learn details she didn't know about her own house ghost.

This lesson sounded really interesting, and Paulina was really looking forward to learning more about the Hogwarts ghosts. She couldn't say the same about the poltergeist, but then she had heard some horror stories about Peeves. Thank Merlin she had managed to avoid him so far this term and she was not wanting to change that.
At the next question, Paulina raised her hand. "I agree with everyone that it's the Fat Friar, my House's Ghost. I don't know what his real name was though." Did he mind being called the Fat Friar? That wasn't exactly the nicest nickname.
Angel looked at the Professor as she spoke to her, seriously that wasn't what she had been told when she was younger, but then again she had been told a lot of things by her primary school teacher that she thought was cool at the time but now it seems like it was wrong, that was just so confusing being taught one thing to find out it's wrong.
Angel then listened to the next question she raised her hand. "I agree with the others Professor!" Angel then thought about something, it was either than or the Bloody Barron on a bad day.

The impact of ghosts on Hogwarts throughout History. Right. RIGHT. Okay. He scribbled that down, still uncomfortable with the subject in general. What impacts were they going to be focusing on? Would this be like a case study? One of those things where there'd be the whole 'to what extent' type things regarding their impact? At this stage, there was so much that was still unclear, so he kept his mouth shut and went along with it. He was trying, in his own way.
As for the 'guess the ghost' he didn't feel the need to repeat the same answer as the rest of the class, it was obvious it was the FAT Friar. He knew this much, as for the ghost's life, and his IMPACT on the school... he was clueless. Was it important? He didn't see how it would be once he left the school, but for now... he supposed it might be.

Being a Ravenclaw, yes...Reagan didn't miss the look that suddenly flashed across the ghost's features...but just as quickly as it had appeared, it was gone. In fact, it was so quick a transition that Rea thought she might've imagined it all together. She didn't blame or judge the ghost, however...because 1) Reagan didn't judge people, and 2) everyone knew the story, and it wasn't a pleasant one. Therefore, who were they to frown upon the ghost-woman for showing a bit of emotion?
Hmm.
"As everyone's said, the Hufflepuff Ghost, the Friar," because Sophie Brown had brought up a good point, and Rea, in response to her lovely dormmate, respected the tidbit. "....or the Jolly Friar?"
She smiled at Soph.
"Professor, I've read that he is very kindhearted, forgiving presence as well." He sounded like her kind of pers-...er, spirit, to be honest.

Dot was still wiggling in her chair, although now because they were still talking about ghosts, and they were going to meet ghosts, and they were going to hear their stories, which all sounded swell, actually, but the wiggling was because she was feeling all anxious and tense about the poor Friar.
The poor poor Friar who had once had a name, but then he died and everyone forgot who he properly was. Merlin, people saw him every day, they knew stuff about him, but no one knew his name? It was so sad. It was ache-in-the-middle-of-you sad.
Dot dropped her chin on her fists and tried not to be sad about a ghost who was actually very jolly, but... nope. Sads were there to stay. "Doesn't he have a for real name, Professor? Can't we call him by his for real name, so that we can acknowledge that he's a for real person? Even if he's dead now, he was a for real person and he had a mother who gave him a for real name." Oh. So that's where the sads came from.
She paused to write down aaaaaalll the notes before looking up at the Grey lady with a grin. Did ya hear that? She touched on something IMPORTANT. That was always exciting, considering how irrelevant she always seemed to be. Well. Irrelevant to everyone else. Norah always found what she had to say to be very relevant to whatever train of thought she'd embarked on, even if nobody else did. Some people just needed to pay more attention.
The next question was so fabulously exciting that her hand shot right into the air before she could even put her quill down. She felt a drop of ink fall from the tip and run down her forearm, but that didn't matter. This was HER house's ghost. The jolly one. Her absolute favorite, 'cause who didn't love jolly? "The Friar!" THE BEST. She didn't have to tell the Grey Lady that, though. What if it hurt her feelings? Ghosts had feelings too, y'know....right?

Owen was taking down notes diligently. And smiling and nodding at the important points of what Professor Ghost was saying. He didn't know that there was a spirit division in the Ministry that delegated placed for ghosts to haunt. It was very good to know about that.
Using the houses' ghosts to strengthen bonds and boost house spirit. Awesome idea, Professor Ghost!
Who was that ghost she was describing? Of course he knew. Beaming, Owen shared, "The Fat Friar, maa'm."

Hady's attention was fixed on the ghost Professor. She knew whom was being spoken of. It was quite easy really. The Fat Friar. Only she wasn't going to answer like everyone else. Being as they ALL had said the same thing. Well everyone except for Dot that is and Hady flashed her older fellow snakette a grin for her answer. Surely the ghost did have a proper name so why didn't any of them seem to know what it was? Would Professor Helena tell then? She waited silently with her quill dangling from her fingers over her parchment for an answer.

Most witches and wizards probably die happy and satisfied with their time on earth and pass on to side of the dead while other chose to linger." Helena answered. Ghosts weren't common.

The Fat Friar was here! Oh good, how useful he was and had such great timing. Davie beamed immediately upon seeing the jovial spirit --- he just had that effect, y'know? --- but he did his best to hold off on all the questions he had for Hufflepuff's house ghost until after the Friar had spoken.
How cool though! Literally! It was getting quite chilly in here!

Yep, he was correct and so were the others who had given the answer as the Hufflepuff Ghost. Speaking of the ghost... there he was! Adi grinned at him as he floated into the room. There was a slight increase in the chill in the air. Maybe it was because Adi was sitting at the front of the class where the two ghosts were close by. Not that he cared.
Oh, so they were going to be told a bit about Friar's life? Cool! This Hufflepuff's attention was focused fully on that Hufflepuff. Yep, as Professor Helena said, whenever you're ready, Friar!

A wizard could choose if they're gonna be a ghost or not when they were dying? Woah...And hearing the Grey Lady's explanation made her think that most ghost weren't happy to be a ghost. Maybe that's why none of her grandparents became ghosts. Okay, maybe she could ask it later to the friar.
Now the fat friar was here, the young lioness just smiled to the ghost. Let's hope that she's not gonna fall asleep when this friar ghost starts his speech. The table is yours, sir!

"OH MY GO-OOOOOOODNESS. IT'S THE FAT FRIAAAAARRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!" No. He wasn't excited at all, no no. He was just going to wave like a maniac and hope he said hi to him. HOPE. He waved his arms just a little bit more before actually letting them fall to his side and not being that student that required all attention possible. He actually just watched both of the ghosts in the room with all of his attention and adoration and everything.

The Friar laughed heartily at the Ravenclaw boy (Shanners).
"You are right, indeed!" He did give the boy the attention he deserved, then he nodded at Helena.
"My name is Alfred of Cinn Tìre," he began his story as he slowly floated among the students, "and as my name suggests, I was born in Kintyre before the first thousand years. I attended Hogwarts. I was a very devoted Hufflepuff. I became a friar in the Roman Catholic Church after graduation to be more Hufflepuff, hehe. I served quite well, too! I was very devoted again as the Hufflepuffs are. Very hard working, hmm! I cured the pox but what did I get? Execution! Before I became a cardinal, too!" And thus, he looked sad. The world wasn't a merry place at times.
Professor Pink | Mrs. Bruce Wayne | I'm on a Goat | Glitterpuff | Dumbledore's Defense Squad | BHB
Awwww no, the very merry Fat Friar looked sad all of a sudden. Davie raised his hand with a question, which might cheer him up because ghosts usually enjoyed talking about their deaths, and which might not, since he had been killed in a very violent manner.
"Did you get executed because you were too good of a Healer, sir? Like as in a MAGICALLY good Healer? Were Church officials suspicious? Why didn't they think the magic you were doing was a miracle?" He could have been a Saint instead of a ghost! Did the Fat Friar have any regrets in that manner? Davie didn't ask that, see, because he did have a little bit of sensitivity.

Okay, so another ghost. And the temperature dropped again. Man. And he had worked so hard to get it warm in the room. There went all his hard work, right out the window. Also was this going to be the entire lesson? Just sittin' here listening to ghosts? Because no offense or anything... But eh.
Bet Sophie was eating it all up though. She lived for this kind of stuff. She liked learning about people's stories. And Zander liked looking at her learning about people's stories, but he also just liked looking at her in general. Sophie Brown is very pretty to look at. Mhm. Very, very pretty to look at. Man, how did--
Ahem.
What were they talking about again? Had the Friar explained what his real name was or had he missed that part?
Ahem.

If the Grey Lady thought it would be a good idea for Sophie Brown to ask the Friar himself, THEN SO SHE WOULD.
And, it seemed, the opportunity was upon her as the GHOST HIMSELF ARRIVED, looking jovial as ever. Adorable, really, just like Rooney's response to the ghost's arrival. THE MOST ADORABLE EVER. HONESTLY.
Settling into her chair, Soph listened intently. So he DID have a name, see? Alfred. Why couldn't they call him Friar Alfred? The part about him being executed wasn't so cute, but... she had questions. Lots of them. Some that were being covered by little Davie, so Soph avoided those topics... but she STILL wanted to know the answer to this one, so her hand went up.
"Sir? Doesn't it... I mean, couldn't there be a better nickname for you than the Fat Friar? S'not like we have to distinguish you from any other friars around here, so why not just the Friar, or a different adjective that better encompasses who you are, like... the Jolly Friar, like Reagan suggested?" Didn't it bother him? Ghosts had feelings, too, didn't they?
