As you take your first step into the history of magic classroom on this march afternoon you notice just how dark it is. The only light comes from the setting sun that filters in through the windows and the burning coal in the few cauldrons scattered around the room for heat and a lamp on the professor's desk. Carefully navigate yourself into the dark classroom and to an empty desk without injuring yourself or your peers. The desk setting in pairs of three in a slightly misaligned order that leads up to the professor desk as well as the black board and on the wall to the left of the blackboard a large floor to ceiling book case hasn't changed since your last visit to the Grey Lady's classroom. The air in the room is as crisp and cold as ever, maybe even a little on the harsher side.
Professor Helena is nowhere in sight, but she'll be along shortly.

Those students were early?
Nah, they weren't. Apparently the Grey Lady was late.
And she wanted her to sit at the front? No, thank you. Ava would NEVER ever took a seat at the front row in any kind of History class. Noooope. She didn't say any word to the Professor and waited until she started the class.
The differences between ghost and poltergeist?
The Gryffindor raised her hand. "Ghost is a spirit from dead person and poltergeist is.... not." Maybe? She knew that Professor Grey Lady was a living person, and so was the other house ghost but... What about peeves?

Wise advice from his Ghostie Professor again. Adi nodded enthusiastically. Here's another bit of info he would be keeping forever with him. He watched as the lady talked to a few students before moving on to get the lesson started. It was a little warmer (bummer) and the lamp were all burning. Still, he didn't need to put on his specs.
Ghosts! What an awesome topic! This lesson was going to be just as awesome as the rest! Yup, he could tell. The Hufflepuff raised his hand after some thought. "A ghost is like something that's been left behind of a person who has died and hasn't crossed over to the other side... the side where departed people go. Poltergeists are not.'' What? He did believe there's someplace persons were supposed to go after they died. Death was a fascinating topic to him... hence his grim reaper tattoo he had acquired last summer. "Whereas ghosts are usually nice, poltergeists are pranksters and can be mean.''

Ooooooh, was today's lesson about ghosts? Were they going to talk about the ghost-demon-thing-who-shall-not-be-named-because-he-upset-the-Grey-Lady? Was it too early for Davie to bring him up? The first year decided to proceed with caution, and raised his hand only a little bit eagerly.
"Ghosts are imprints of the souls of deceased witches and wizards. These witches or wizards usually have chosen to remain behind, instead of moving on, because they are afraid of death," he answered smartly, with a serious nod to his House ghost. He wasn't trying to be insensitive or anything, he was just really fascinated by this topic. "Ghosts can only occupy, or haunt, certain areas that were important to them while they were alive. The Spirit Division of the Department of Magical Creatures, in the Ministry of Magic, is supposed to help ghosts, and make sure they stay in their assigned haunt."
He took a breath for the second part of this question. "By contrast, poltergeists are non-beings without a physical form, except for Peeves, and they're amortal, which means they've never been alive and thus can never die. Unlike ghosts though, poltergeists can lift and move objects, and usually just spend their time causing chaos and mischief for the humans who also live where they dwell." There, that answer would do. Davie smiled a little bit and settled back in his cold seat.

Syah felt her face flame a little as the Grey Lady asked if she was okay! Curse her weak ankles... and her lack of ability to see in the dark! She was a blind as a bat in the dark! Too bad she couldn't use echo location!
Anyways.. She nodded to the Grey Lady to indicate that she was all right.
She felt a shiver go down her spine as the topic of Ghosts was announced, before pondering what she thought they were.
"Ghosts were real people who have unfinished business, and so their spirits stayed behind when their body died." She thought anyways... but what were poltergeists? "Poltergeists..were never alive?"

Oh good. She could see now.
Paulina smiled. "Hello, Professor Helena. I'm all in one piece." So no, she hadn't managed to bump into anything. Thank Merlin for that. But why hadn't she thought to light her wand like that one younger boy had? Seemed that he was the only one here with any common sense.
Taking out her notebook, Paulina listened as the lesson started. Raising her hand she proceeded to answer the first question: "A ghost is a person who has died but has left their spirit behind. Generally this is because they are either afraid of death or have some strong connection to the place they have chosen to stay behind in." That was a nice way of saying 'haunt'. "There are a few differences between ghosts and poltergeists. For one thing, poltergeists aren't dead since something can't die when they weren't alive in the first place." There were other things she could list, but Paulina thought it wouldn't be fair to her classmates if she hogged the answer.

Now that it was loads warmer, Zander could sit comfortably in his seat. Yes, much better.
And for the vague question to start off the-- oh. Ghosts. How... fitting? Zander hand't known anything about them when he had first arrived at Hogwarts. He always believed they were just make believe, y'know? But now that he had spent seven years in a castle full of 'em, he knew better.
Not wanting to repeat any answers, he let the others go ahead and give their definitions knowing well that his own would pretty much consist of the same things. Ghosts were an interesting lesson topic, Zander thought so anyways. But poltergeists? Ugh. Peeves. He was the only one Zander knew, unfortunately.
Zander opted not to answer this one as there wasn't really anything more to add. Plus he didn't have any interesting facts or anything... And whatever he'd try to say would probably turn into some sort of complaint about Peeves, so yeah. Better not.

There was nothing that Rooney loved more than an interesting topic in a class taught by a knowledgeable Professor, one of which being Professor Helena. And ghosts were something he was particularly interested in since attending Hogwarts. Maybe it was the presence of them around the castle or the fact that he was now being taught by one. Either way, he was reading more about ghosts than the average person probably should have. But he didn't believe hardly anything that he read. It would be foolish to. Ghosts most definitely didn't have the power to change the weather, which was what one book had said.
He didn't raise his hand nor answer the question given to them as he thought everyone else had already covered it, and he was too busy writing down their answers himself.

Benny offered a smile hidden from most in the darkness as Adi picked him out as he got close. "Hello Hippogriff," he answered before shaking his head at the tease. "I think I'd burn the place down before I got enough candles going." At this point he was going between little puffs and big blazes and he was out of practice even if he could manage to make fire at the current moment. And oh look...the Grey Lady had arrived apologetic.
So that's why it had been cold...and dark.
The room hadn't been prepared.
"Good afternoon, Professor," he greeted in return. "It's okay." Soon enough there was more light and warming charms must have been placed and permeating the room so it wasn't an issue anymore anyway. As for the question posed to the class on the topic of ghosts, the Gryffindor was remaining quiet between not sure of speaking to a ghost about ghosts and what came to mind being already said by other students including Adi.
Jet had to blink several times to get used to the light again. She blinked again when the Grey Lady spoke to her. "I do." She answered, shifting on her seat once the professor moved on to talk to someone else.
The fifth year remained quiet as the class started and the first question was asked. What an awkward situation. Jet wondered how the professor would react if people started being too blunt about why a person came back as a ghost. In her opinion, it was simply because of fear of the unknown. Fear of what they would or would not find on the other side of death. Ghosts were people who deserved their pity, maybe? Helena Ravenclaw would not be happy with that answer. Jet wouldn't, were she a ghost.
Since people had already said what Jet was thinking - in a nicer, less blunt way - she chose to continue to be quiet.

Reagan, having slid in beside little Davie Truebridge before the lesson could officially start, already had her notebook and quill out; poised to take notes. She'd only just made it in time, too, since her exercise sesh had ran over a bit that morning...but it hadn't been in vain.
She felt better and prepared to learn; physically and mentally.
Also, Rea thought Davie had the right idea about ghosts and poltergeists, as far as his comparison between the two. Also, this was shaping up to be her favorite lesson of the term. GHOSTS! Reagan, indeed, had a vast appreciation for these spirits and their history. "To add to what Davie has said...I think ghosts are also those who've suffered violent deaths." Heh, she hoped her pointed staring at Helena Ravenclaw wasn't...misconstrued as rude...but...And it wasn't just The Grey Lady, but the Bloody Baron, as well. And Nearly Headless Nick. All particularly violent demises, in her opinion.
Also, again..."This is some of my favorite subject matter, Professor." Deeply fascinating stuff here.

Sweet Merlin, the darkness AND the coldness that filled the room upon her entrance at the beginning of class definitely set a spooky tone for this class, hadn't it? As if a dead woman teaching their class wasn't spooky enough already sometimes. There had also been no professor, which was also weird, and considering how it seemed as though the Grey Lady hadn't prepared the classroom much if at all for them... uh, had she gotten the class time wrong? If she had, so had everyone else, but soon enough, the ghost appeared, apologetic, and had lit the classroom. Well. Good. That was better, and Soph wiggled in her seat next to Zander's, nonverbally casting the insulation charm, Caelum Saepio, with her wand directed toward the nearest wall, then up toward the ceiling, causing a little fog to coat the intended surfaces, then dissipate, just as Fuller had taught them it would. Just helping the cause a little. Not completely worthless over here.
When the professor started class, Soph sat up in her chair, her eyes flickering with excitement as the professor picked out a topic that SHE had even recommended in her homework assignment. Ha. GHOSTS. Was she going to get to talk about Lainey and the others and how they came back from the dead? Was the Grey Lady jealous of them? Was the Grey Lady going to talk about HER own experience with being a ghost and tell them her whole life story and make this whole class about her?!
If she was, that was totally AWESOME.
What was a ghost, and what was the difference between one and a poltergeist? Easy peasy. They'd very briefly gone over this in a class with Glendower before, she thought, but Soph was happy to dive into this topic again, especially since a REAL ghost was here teaching them. She listened to the others' answers for awhile before finally raising her hand, touching upon only the subject of poltergeists, since people were leaving out the crucial detail of how poltergeists formed in the first place. If they weren't dead spirits, what were they, hm? Sophie Brown was here to fill in the holes.
"I'd argue that rather than use the term "never alive" to describe a poltergeist, we should say never corporeal. I mean, we'd argue that Peeves or Samea are plenty alive in spirit, they're full of the OTHER definiton of "life," they've just never had bodies and been human. 'N while we're not ENTIRELY sure where they come from, some think poltergeists are the result of a person dying in a powerful rage at the time of death, like, the poltergeist is formed from those energies from that death," she shrugged over at Rea, who'd offered up a similar thing on the concept of ghosts, "and some people think poltergeists come from negative energies emitted from young people. Like us. Teenagers. Like, all of our angst and negative emotions we give off create a sorta big magical aura energy thing that once got so powerful that it formed a poltergeist. Then maybe the continuation of those kind of emotions being emitted makes 'em keep existing. Fuels 'em. Which'd make since that we'd have 'em here, since it's like angst central confined within Hogwarts' walls. But I think the most commonly accepted theory is that they're the result of REALLY super strong emotions from a person, 'specially at the time of death, 'n they just... come into being from those super powerful emotions. They were never a being, always a spirit with no past life or anything like a ghost."
And the death part made sense since people died at Hogwarts all the time throughout its history. Obviously.

GHOSTS!
This lesson was about GHOSTS!
That one small mention made Phillip perk up. GHOSTS! This was BOUND to be cool, and kind of informative since it was being taught by a ghost and all. Maybe SHE could tell them the little details. Like how it felt to die. And why she chose to come back, if she did. You know, curiosity and all. He had plenty of THAT in his body.
And then she asked a question and people started talking and............ HOLY MOLY, THERE WERE SOME SMART ANSWERS HERE.
Phillip STARED from one person to another as they rambled on and on and on to give the differences. Truth be told, he didn't even know HALF of that, how did they manage to memorise SO MUCH? HUH??? Were their brains SUPER POWERFUL? Because he would be surprised if he remembered what he had for dinner last night, let alone the differences between a ghost and a poltergeist. And some answers were confusing him. Like, the part about not being living in the first place and so, never dying. HOW WAS THAT POSSIBLE?! There was one C O N F U S E D first year over here.
But the question. UH. "I've heard that poltergeists can be jinxed, JUST like humans can."
Angel smiled as she answered the professors question. "Yes, I'm totally looking forwards to the lesson." Angel loved History of Magic and now she had a question to answer for real as the Professor started the lesson, this was good. "Professor I think a ghost is caught in Limbo right." Angel had heard that but then when she had heard it she was a primary school child and never met one now she was wondering if she had been taught wrong. "And a poltergeists likes to misbehave and annoy people unlike ghosts." Which gave the film Casper the friendly ghost an whole new meaning right?

When the Grey Lady deemed that it was time to start the lesson she cleared her throat to get the student's attention as she floated a little closer to the first row of desks and she let her voice rung out through the room a small smile pursing her lips. "Welcome back everyone! Today's lesson is going to be about ghosts." Adjusting her dress and placing her transparent hands in her lap, Professor Helena continued her pale green eyes flowing over the assembled students. "Before we dig deeper into the subject of ghosts can someone please tell me what the definition of a ghost is in their own words? And also what the difference is between a ghost and a poltergeist." It was prudent to get everyone on the same page from the start. It made the whole lesson easier.
Wise course of action, sensible wizard... why yes, yes he was. Zeke remained seated, looking pleased with himself. Perhaps HoM wouldn't be so bad after all.
Opening his notebook up to a fresh page - which wasn't hard, considering it was empty from having skipped the class until now - he dated the corner and waited for the lesson to begin. His page would need a title.
As the lesson DID begin, he was instantly confused.
Ghosts.
The topic of the lesson was ghosts.
Zeke raised his hand, not to answer the question that followed, but more to clarify what the emphasis of the lesson was. "Professor, when you say the topic is ghosts, could you elaborate on that? Is there an event? The first ghost? ..." just WHAT historically was he supposed to learn? How was this 'historical'?
Though, granted, he hadn't given her much of an opportunity to get the lesson underway, but he was never very good at being patient. Whoops? It wasn't as if he could participate in conversation of the topic all that well anyway, he hadn't bothered to KNOW a definition of the two until now.
Hehehehe. A ghost was going to teach them about ghosts. Chloe thought that was the most ironic, or was it coincidental she never knew the difference, thing ever. Still, she wasn't really sure the difference. The poltergeists were the mean ones, right? The ones who haunted people and bothered them. Ghosts were spirits who didn't move on.
Honestly, she wasn't sure. So she kept her hand down and opted to listen instead.

Ghosts were actually a very interesting topic, especially with an actual ghost teaching the class. Dot squirmed in her chair as she listened to her classmates expound on the topic, although she froze when Sophie spoke. Sophie always had a LOT to say, and today was no different.
Finally, though, Dot raised her hand and grinned at Lady Ravenclaw. "Professor, Muggles think ghosts are really spooky and are scared of them, but I think that's because they can't see them properly and so they're more afraid of the unknown. And also some spells work on ghosts, just like some work on poltergeists."
They're going to learn about GHOST? From a GHOST? This is going to be a very interesting lesson. She could tell. What she know about the difference between a ghost and a poltergeist?
Candice raised her hand in the air and waited till its her turn to talk. "You can see the difference from what they do, Professor. Ghosts, they haunt. They don't terrorize people. While Poltergeists like to play around with people." Like Peeves.

Ah the lights were on now! Hady seemed to settle back into her seat more now feeling more at ease. The darkness had given it the feeling that one needed to be much more alert (not that she wasn't alert now!).
Taking out a sheet of parchment and her quill the fourth year began to take down notes right away. Ghosts. Ghosts and poltergists were the days lesson. Alright. Good. Hady shifted her attention towards the Head Girl when she gave her answer. There was nothing more to be said after that one, she must admit the older girl sure did always know her stuff. Certainly someone to go to if one needed help or something and a Professor wasn't nearby. With nothing left to really answer she just took to her note taking for the time being.

Right. The Prefect lowered his hand and instead took to doodling on his parchment, looking up every so often at the Grey Lady to show that he was listening to every word.

Helena was about to makes notes appear on the blackboard for the student's to write down when Zeke stopped her floating away but not by answering her question. He wanted to know the purpose of the lesson. Irritation flared up inside her but she kept that down as she answered with just little hint of disapproval in her tone. "We're studying ghosts today because ghosts have had a long impact on the history of this school and its happenings and will continue to have that in the future." And that was all Helena was going to say about that.

Deeming that all students that wanted to had given their answers Professor Helena proceeded on with the lecture. "Poltergeists are spirits that have never been living humans and as thus they can never die since they were never alive from the start. They haunt locations that are inhabited by a big number of adolescents like Hogwarts. Poltergeists usually doesn't have a corporeal form except for the castle's poltergeist and most notable poltergeist in history; Peeves who can move objects by using his own physical force and I'm sure many of you have been the target at least once by Peeves pranks and trouble causing and notorious ability to create as much mischief as possible wherever he goes." Even Helena had gotten her fill of Peeves antics over the years. "Ghosts on the other hand are incorporeal imprints that the witch or wizard have left behind on earth after suffering a violent death. We feared death and thus chose to remain among the living as transparent forms instead of passing over. We can't touch living things and you can't touch us and the spirit division at the ministry decide where we can haunt which is why I and my ghostly companions will forever remain here at Hogwarts."
"Ghosts and poltergeists are in many ways similar and what differentiates us most is that ghosts were humans once while poltergeists have never been living......." Finishing her lecture she paused for a few moments before she decided to move on. "This term as you all may have noticed is about house spirit and building stronger bonds between each other so I thought I'd do my part in it by letting you all get to know us house ghosts better and our stories to increase house spirit and your bonds to your houses."
"Well first look closer at one of the house ghosts that is often described as fat, short, brown-haired cheerful and dressed in a habit held up by a rope belt. Can you guess who I mean?"

Syah winced a little a she heard what being a ghost actually meant! Whoops! She guessed she had been watching too much muggle tv! She wished now she had been a little more sensitive about the whole thing, since a ghost was teaching their class!
A violent death, and fearing death! It was all so sad and Syah couldn't help but mist up just slightly! However as the lecture went on, she calmed down and her tears evaporated..
She knew the answer to this question! She thought anyways!
She raised her hand and spoke, "That would be the Fat Friar right? He's the Hufflepuff House Ghost."

Candice listened carefully as the Professor explained to them more about the difference between ghosts and poltergeists. And that's a VERY LONG explanation. She was pretty sure that she almost doze off during her speech lecture.
Then the Grey Lady told them about house spirit and building stronger bonds. She gave the class a description about a ghost. A house ghost. Fat? Short? Brown-haired? Definitely not Sir Nicholas. Since he's not fat. Dressed in a habit held up by a rope belt? OH! OH! The Gryffindor raised her hand "Fat Friar, Professor."

Adi smiled and nodded happily at Helena told him he was correct. He then proceeded to make his notes as the differences were listed by his classmates then adding some more when the Ghostie Professor added her own explanations.
Oh, yeah! House bonding. Adi did like that the Professors had come up with this idea for this term since he liked the activities so much. Especially the ones held during winter time. Anyway... he listened to the description before raising his hand almost immediately. "Fat Friar, Professor Helena!'' Yep, Hufflepuff's ever jovial ghost.

Merlin, did this lesson just get depressing or what? Death cannot possibly be worse than being a ghost can it? To stay in the same place for an eternity, to watch as people come and go and come and go, generations after generations, and you're the same. He'd go insane. Death was a one time offer, and Benzi made a hurried decision to get over his fear of dying so that he didn't, Merlin forbid, end up stuck on his earth as a ghost until the end of time. ... If there even was an end of time. What would happen to the ghosts if the sun exploded?
Probably best not to ask that question though. The teacher was somewhat close to the source material.
Luckily, the Grey Lady chose that moment to ask her second question. Ah, this one he knew. After jotting down everything Professor Helena said - Professor Helena, it was still weird - Benzi raised his hand. "The Fat Friar, professor, ghost of Hufflepuff house."

The only reason that Olly paid attention at all was because the professor was a ghost. He might pay attention better in other classes if those professors were ghosts as well. The reason was not clear - he supposed she just seemed like she should have more interesting things to say since she was a ghosts. Ghosts knew stuff, right? They'd been around for a while, so they should know more than him at least. Well most people did, that was not the point.
Were they playing a game now? Name that ghost. That would be a fun name. Olly wanted to win. But a lot of older students beat him to the answer this time. Not that he'd known it anyway. Olly didn't know the names of a lot of the ghosts. Man, he was bad at that game. Next question please.
