Before entering the classroom you'll see a big parchment sign next to the door in curvy noticeable letters that reads:
Task before entering the History of Magic Classroom:
Located next to the door is large rack of costumes, a variety of hats and masks as well as dress up make up and accessories like glasses and bags. Your task is to choose a costume and/or a mask from the rack and dress up as your favourite witch or wizard from magical history. (no creatures please, otherwise no limits.)
After you put on that costume, fixed that mask, adjusted your hat askew or added that last bit of eye-shadow so you look like the author Bathilda Bagshot or someone else famous from magical history then head into the classroom. Once fully inside you'll see rows up on rows of desks in pairs of three in a slightly misaligned order that leads up to the professor desk as well as the black board and on the wall to the left of the blackboard a large floor to ceiling book case. The air you feel is slightly on the crisp and icey side in the classroom even though warming spells are in place. A consequence of the winter weather and the fact that you are taught by a ghost.
Professor Helena is sitting on the edge of her desk, waiting for her students to arrive.

Rooney laughed at the Grey Lady and nodded, modelling his beard a little more with a few turns of his head. "Does it suit me, Professor?" He was unsure about it, and was certain that he may have an allergic reaction to the face make up that he had used. Or his skin just wasn't used to having such stuff on his face once more. "Oh yeah!" Rooney hadn't actually thought of dressing up more to represent exactly how Leonard Spencer-Moon had risen to the top of the Ministry.
But now he did and he darted straight out of the classroom again to get a tea cup and a tray. And so he didn't have to balance the tray effectively, he used his wand to temporarily stick the cup to his tray and head back into the classroom to take a seat as Professor Helena started the class.
"People are more familiar with iconic individuals as they find it easier to differentiate between events if they can liken it to a face or personality attribute. It also gives a connection between the history and the present if someone aspires to be like someone." Like he was with Leonard Spencer-Moon.

Hogwarts has never employed a giant on staff that I know of but a beloved half-giant by the name of Rubeus Hagrid served as groundskeeper and CoMC professor for a number of years." And he in Helena's opinion embodied the whole knowing your mistakes and trying to do better.
Floating backwards to sit on the edge of the desk again she said. "Giants are a very dangerous race of humanoids that we co-exist with here it in the wizarding world that I think you all should learn more about and more precisely their history and how they as a race have impacted our history. Can you all please give me one fact each that you know about giants."
"Professor," his hand went up and he gave it a little wave. "Giants have their own language, but they can learn other languages. They aren't as stupid as the saying 'big oaf' would suggest." The Ravenclaw actually took a look around the room to see if any of the students there could be considered an oaf. Maybe the Head Boy - had Rooney even seen him or was he just projecting his stupid ideas of oafs onto his love rival?s
Giants, huh? That was a pretty wicked topic. Maybe Sophie had underestimated the Grey Lady. Who knew the ghost would talk about things that were actually INTERESTING? Soph would've thought her house ghost would just be prone to lectures of droning on and on about things that would be of little interest to the class.
But nope, this was cool. So far. Minus... the whole costume thing, which Soph still wasn't super fond of. Still, she got to wear a tiara and wore some cool-looking robes - which were kind of itchy and scratchy, by the way - so that kind of made it a little better and more tolerable.
For now.
One fact about giants, though. She could do that. Soph listened to her peers' answers and nodded her agreement, her own hand going up. "Giants are super powerful, I've heard even MORE than dragons - like, it'd take WAY more to subdue a giant than it would a dragon, even, which is a LOT. Stunning spells pretty much just roll off giants' backs 'n are hardly effective at all. S'why they're super dangerous - s'almost like they're uncontrollable."
Soph didn't want any run-ins with a giant, nope nope. They could squish her like a BUG. She had too much to live for to be squished like a bug, okay?
Angel listened to the Professor and then she raised her hand. "Professor when you are younger everyone looks like a giant." Angel had thought a few of her school teachers had been giants but now she was growing she wondered if anyone thought they were giants. "Though some of them were nice and others were mean and horrible." That's what she thought anyway.

"Don't worry, I'm super good at this." He assured the Ghost Professor. Wielding a sword was a big responsibility. Even at 11 he was aware of this and it wasn't like he was going to be swinging it all over the place....yet. He WOULD get to play with this, yeah? Not just hold it for pretend the whole time?
"I don't think it helps all that much to be honest. Holding his sword doesn't make me know where he lived or the fantastic stuff he's done. It's like.......I know most of his work and he's important because of the products of his work." Not because of the things the man owned.
It was hard to forget a man when you were placed in the house named after him in a school he helped to found a couple years ago.
"I think history matters more when you've got more than just their...stuff left behind."

THEY WERE GONNA BE TALKING ABOUT GIANTS???
Blaise didn't know much about them, they weren't really big in his readings but he could always take a crack at it. There were some things that everyone had to know--things that he knew even without cracking open a book and so his hand shot up.
"They're very big." He'd have gone into how they were smarter than trolls who were equally as large but she'd said she only wanted one fact and he didn't wanna seem too much like he was showing off.
You know how it went; kid had a reputation to protect as a Gryffindor. Ahem.

On the ONE hand this was the GREY LADY so on one hand, Char felt like she HAD to listen and pay attention and everything, but on the OTHER HAND ohhhh she was saying so many things and Char had to work SO HARD at not having her mind wander. All that blah blah!
It was really only mention of GIANTS that saved things, Char perked up. OH GIANTS! She knew things! She shoved her hand up and when she was called on she spoke excitedly, all bouncing.
"They like fire! Albus Dumbledore once had Rubeus Hagrid give the giants a gift of Gubraithian fire to try and win them over! That's everlasting fire! Probably the branch is still burning to this day because Dumbledore was super powerful!"
That was cool right????? Though, Char DID wonder how many forest fires might have been started by branches of Gubraithian fire being left lying around.

Having a ghost as a professor was truely amazing. Noelles eyes danced as he looked at her, even if it was a bit chilly in here.
Why was history important? Noelle was a firm believer that you had to know where you came from to get to where you are going. You couldn't know your past without getting to your present. Perhaps the Grey Lady was saying this because she didn't feel important? Oh, professor, if she could hug you, she totally would.
But then they were taking about Giants. Oh okay!
Noelle didn't know a lot about Giants so she just listened as people gave facts. She wrote a few down, unsure if they were true or not, but she would cross them out if they weren't.

Giants? This wasn't Magical Creatures, although... to be fair, it was hard to call giants proper creatures. Dot wrinkled her nose in thought as her classmates spoke, her hands folded on the desk in front of her.
The goggles were starting to bug her.
"I think giants don't... really live well together, but they also prefer to live together. It helps them to have a strong, scary leader or else they just destroy each other."

Hady pulled out a sheet of clean parchment and her quill already taking own some notes as the Professor spoke.
Giants? That was the days topic. Why did they dress up to learn about giants? This was what Hady didn't exactly understand but she didn't say anything just yet asumming as the lesson went on it would make more sense.
Seeing as everything that snakette could remember about giants was already said she kept quiet this time. Rather she went back to taking down notes.

The Grey Lady liked her philosophy TOO. Aw yeah. She was on a roll today, especially because ghosts had to be really wise after being on earth for such a long time. Norah added a few of her classmates' examples to her notes, before adding 'GIANTS' in big letters. This was going to be crazy awesome. Giants were so cool. Well, she didn't really know much about them but they definitely seemed cool, which had to count for something. She paused to jot down some of the other little facts about giants, then put her hand up to contribute with her own. "Giants live together with big scary leaders who you have to bring gifts to if you want them to listen to you. Or else they'll probably bash your head in." Y'know, like Charlotte said, with the fire that burned forever and ever. She knew about THAT one, see? The costume was well chosen.

After nodding at the Professor's response to her contribution, Paulina busied herself by writing down what others had to say. It might come up in the History of Magic NEWT so best to be prepared. She liked history but it could be hard to remember, so notes helped a fair bit; it was just easier when she put things down in her own words.
The conversation turned to giants, and while Paulina knew a little about them she was by no means an expert. It seemed that her fellow classmates were doing an awesome job of answering the question, so she decided to remain quiet. She was perfectly content making her notes.
Giants? They're going to learn about Giants today? But she thought they gonna learn about famous people from the history that's why they dressed up as them. apparently she was wrong. She wondered was there any famous giants that partake in historical events?
One fact about giants? Candice raised her hand "They're not a very intelligent being."

Why she decided to dress-up like Ginny Weasley? The honest reason, it was the first thing that popped on her head especially she saw the Gryffindor quidditch robe and a redhead wig. Giants? Well Janelle hadn't seen that coming. That was a topic that she found to be very interesting. Janelle listened as her classmates told something that they knew about giants. She made notes as they went along and finally raised her hand to join the conversation.
"Giants like to have a lot of space. They don't like to be jammed together in a small space with a bunch of other giants. It makes them meaner and they will kill each other over the smallest thing." Janelle didn't particularly like to be cramped up in a small space either, but it wouldn't be something she would fight or kill about.

Benzi had long decided that putting the ghost and the House affiliation aside, he enjoyed the way the Grey Lady taught. Professor Helena. Hehe, would have been funny if she'd gone by Professor Ravenclaw. He was both kind of glad and a bit miffed that she didn't show any favourism at all towards Ravenclaw - come on she was their house ghost - but knew that if she had she's surely have been kicked off the job which would have been bad.
Anyways. Giants. "They sided with Voldemort's people in the first wizarding war and terrorised muggles especially, so they were hunted mercilessly by the aurors which forced them to hide in remote regions of the world," yes, he'd been studying. A lot. He was practically a walking textbook by this point. How he wanted to not know this stuff.

While the students had been raising their hands and giving one fact each Helena had by a trick made the notes writes itself on the blackboard. One downside to being a ghost was that you couldn't carry or use a wand so she had gotten help from Headmaster Botros to make her teaching easier. The student's didn't need to know how.
Smiling faintly at the class Helena said "Giants are big dangerous creatures with immense strength that like to live in mountain areas in tribes but with a lot space between them and strong leaders that keeps them from killing each other. They are vicious and prefer solving conflicts by battling each other till someone dies. Which is why their Gurgs are the strongest and most vicious giants of a tribe."
"Since this is history class we shall focus on how they have directly impacted our history. Giants played an integral part in both the first and second wizarding wars. In the first war they sided with the dark lord voldermort and were responsible for some of the worst atrocities against the muggle community. After the first war's end, the giant population was reduced after the Ministry of Magic's aurors had targeted and killed many. The giants then went into hiding since the wizarding populace now loathed and feared them."
"Before the second wizarding war Albus Dumbledore urged the ministry to make an alliance with the giants and when they spurned the idea, he still sent Rubeus Hagrid and Olympe Maxine to negotiate terms with the giants. Why do you think he did that? Why was it so important to Albus Dumbledore that the giants didn't side with Voldermort in this war? To prevent more atrocities?"

Adi stared at Helena as he wondered how in the world she made notes appear on the board without a wand. She had mad skills, yo! Anyway, he made his notes as the Ghost Lady went on speaking about the topic of today's class.
His quill now set down on his desk, the Hufflepuff considered the questions before raising his hand. "To get them on their- the ones against Voldemort- side because Dumbledore was a wise guy and knew how destructible they could be. Plus everyone back then had seen the mayhem that had been caused by the giants so if they fought for the good side, it would help a great deal.'' Yeah, who wouldn't want the powerful giants on their side? "And I also think that he wanted to save them... save them from going to the bad side.''

Janelle was fascinated by all of the information being given about giants. Checking the blackboard, she wrote down any information that she had missed. Janelle could not imagine how huge the giants would be, let alone what the possibility of seing one in person would be like. They would be incredibly frightening, even if they weren't vicious. But it was question time again and his one required a little more thought.
After pondering the professor's question, Janelle raised her hand again. "I think Dumbledore tried to form an alliance with the giants to beat Voldemort to the punch. He knew first hand what kind of destruction they could cause if they weren't on his side." But that answer almost seemed too easy. There had to be more. "Like Adi said, I also think he wanted to protect the giants. So many were killed during the first wizarding war, that there weren't very many giants left. If they were on Voldemort's side during the second wizarding war, maybe he thought there might have been very few, if any giants left."

Benzi wouldn't mind a neat little trick that the Grey Lady used for the blackboard, for his notes. That way he'd have to take none and just participate in the lesson. Oh well.
"Professor, it's true that Dumbledore wanted to have giants on his side because Voldemort would have them too, but I also think that giants pose a tactical advantage during a battle because they're absolutely ruthless and are very difficult to overpower. Spells bounce off them, they're capable of taking on multiple wizards and witches at the same time and like you said, they're really really strong," Benzi said, his arm raised as he thought.
And here's another idea. "Perhaps he wanted to get the giants on his side so that there would be less giants for Voldemort to send after the muggles? Dumbledore was know for his love of muggles." Of course, it all came down to the same principles which they were all saying. More giants for Dumbledore, less giants for Voldemort. It's not a crazy conclusion to jump to.

Wait... wait. "Not very intelligent" was on the board? Erm. "Professor?" Soph's hand was in the air. "I disagree that giants aren't intelligent. I mean, look," she was pointing at the board, "we even noted that they have their own language AND can learn other languages, including our own. A being capable of learning and speaking many other languages doesn't really seem to be lacking intelligence to me. I mean, they might not be as smart as us, but that doesn't mean they're not intelligent."
She didn't think any giants would take too kindly to being labeled "not very intelligent" either.
As for the ghost's question, Soph's hand was back up and she offered up her opinion. "I think it's common sense why he did that - since giants are so powerful and dangerous, having them as allies just makes SENSE. I mean, if they're recruited to Voldemort's side instead, that means the good guys will have to take ON the giants and as I said, it's mega hard to take down a giant with spells, even moreso than a dragon - so they'd have wanted that kind of immense power on their side. The side with the giants definitely has an upper hand no matter what, as giants can hold their own defensively AND offensively, too. They're strong all-around and I'd hate to be their enemy."
Or even just stumble across one for that matter. She didn't trust giants not to impulsively attack no matter what. Giants just did what they wanted, man. With that kind of strength, she supposed they could, too.
Angel listened to the Professor and then she heard what the Professor said about Professor Dumbledore... she wondered if the Grey Lady had spend nights talking to the old headmaster in the Headmaster Study. Angel was going to ask her one day if she remembered.
Angel raised her hand and smiled. "Professor, I think that Professor Dumbledore, knew that if the giants went over to the dark side, then it would be harder for Voldemort to win the second war... the more dark creatures he had at his disposal the easier it would be for him to take over and attack people." Angel shivered at the thought of what it must have been like being a child in them days.
Dumbledore. Now there was a Machiavellian if Cutty ever saw one. Although some of his strategies were better than others the young wizard thought. There were obvious answers as to why a wizard in Dumbledore's position might need to court the giants. Or what would've been left of them at the time. Dumbledore always read like someone who was accutely aware of how things appeared and was ready for any after effects of that appearance. He raised his hand, "Dumbledore would've known what sort of effect his courting of the giants mighteff had on the ...fragile psyche of a wizard like Voldemort. Maybe soom of his reasons for trying to sway the giants to 'is side was to discourage the dark lord. Give 'im a bittoffa jarring." Cutty always imagined that Dumbledore laughed loud and proud behind the scenes at how very dramatic Voldemort must have been.

Rooney looked between Professor Helena and Miss Sophie Brown and nodded. "I don't think they're unintelligent either. Actually, the learning of languages requires an intelligence far greater than that of many things we're taught in school, Professor." And even if that hadn't been true, it would have been - for Miss Sophie Brown was always right. And there was always an element of thinking with her and it always made sense. Maybe in the long run...but always made sense.
He listened to other answers, only raising his hand when he felt that he understood his own enough to convey it efficiently. "I don't think his initial thought was any form of atrocities, Professor. In fact, I think it was more to help the giants in numbers. Another war could wipe their entire species out, and that was typically the aim of Lord Voldemort -- not giants, but muggleborns. Previously, Lord Voldemort had the upper hand, he offered the better deal, but didn't follow through. Dumbledore must have been sure enough to send those close to him out to recruit the giants. Sure that their allegiance to Lord Voldemort may have waivered slightly -- enough that they may consider the opposing side to that they chose before. Dumbledore was..well, he knew that although quality is better than quantity, numbers can help in many ways that skill can't." He stopped to take a breath, and then shrugged.
"I don't think he trusted those on the side he fought for enough." Just opinions.

Hady was quickly taking notes as the lesson was moving on a bit faster then she had expected. No worries though she was ready and easily catching and keeping up with what was being said around her.
"I agree with Adi. I think Dumbledore knew how destructive they could be and having them on our side the good side would be a large help.
