The Greenhouses are all kept neat and tidy by Professor Myers. Each one is evenly spaced out in their residing spot outside of the castle. There are five greenhouses, all of them done up to Professor Myer's idea of organization, which carefully follows past organization of the greenhouses with just a few changes. The air is a little crisper out here, students.
Greenhouses one through three are open to student aid and experimentation. If you're careful and confident, you can feel free to tend to the Venemous Tentaculas in Greenhouse Three or engage in a playful tug-of-war with the Devil's Snare in the Greenhouse Two. If you traipse through each greenhouse, you will identify almost every sort of magical plant that has ever been taught at Hogwarts. Bubotubers, puffapods, fanged geraniums, biting toadstools, flesh-eating shrubs, and so on..... and that's not even mentioning the assortment of Muggle flowers in Greenhouse One!
Each greenhouse has little shelves for cute or ordinary pots, as well as racks of tools and any other necessities you may need in the large corner cabinets. There's plenty of lab tables for setting up your own tinkering station, and sinks to clean up in too. Don't forget to add to the compost pile behind the greenhouses when you're done with your trimming!
OOC: Here's a basic guide of what you might find in each greenhouse; please remember to play realistically based on your character's age and skill level!

She already got two ingredients so far. And she could still smell the chicken poop. Eeeww. Why did she had to choose this crate again? She didn't mind touching poop but she just didn't like the texture of chicken poop. Yuck! Okay. enough about chicken poop, she need to get back digging her compost.
Just keep digging.....Just keep digging....Just keep digging....
She felt something. It felt like paper? She took a closer look and her guess was correct. The next layers of her compost was shredded paper. Then she started digging some more. This time she found tea bags in her compost.

So she had found coffee grounds, tea bags, moldy bread and orange peel on this compost. So that means she only needed to guess the manure and found if this compost crate used straw or twigs for the base. The young lioness then dug up more and found twigs. She almost done with this activity. All she needed to find was the manure that this compost had been used. But it seemed like they use cow manure for this since it looked bigger. Hehehe. Okay, she had found all the composition. It's time to write it on her card!

Things on this compost:
-cow manure (nitrogen)
-orange peel (nitrogen)
-moldy bread (carbon)
-teabags (carbon)
-coffee grounds (nitrogen)
-twigs (carbon)
And...... DONE! Ava then took off her gloves and washed her hands. Ugh, dunno if she's gonna have appetite to have some meal after this.

Alright so now for the actual work part. Y'know, the thing about homework was, wasn't it meant to be done at home? And Zander loved Herbology and all, but home was definitely the Common Room. Not the Greenhouse. Not that he was complaining or anything... Just, did they have to walk all the way down here just for a class assignment? Surely Professor Myers saw the problem in that right?
Speaking of seeing-- Eh. That was a failed transition from the start. Scratch that bit.
Gloves. Zander was gonna put on his gloves because that's what you did when you had to deal with animal poop. And not that Zander was going to faint like that Rooney kid did, but it's not like he actually liked touching poop. So gloves it was. Though he sort of forgot that using a spade was an option and he had already started digging his hands in the compost sample, so uh, nevermind.
But... The type of manure did look... Uh. Well it wasn't knarl manure because he had used that in class and this looked a bit different. Not that Zander was an expert on manure. Rather not. Ummmm... It didn't look like any magical creature manure, honestly. So he was gonna go with either chicken or cow here and it was a fifty fifty shot between the two so he'd go with... Chicken. Maybe. Okay yeah, locking in his answer. Chicken manure.

Okay, so far she already got 4 things in her compost. She continued to dig around her compost and this time she found dead flowers. She dig a little deeper and she found twigs in the last layers of her compost. Well, technically the last layers was the soil. And with that, she was done digging compost.
Now, she need worms for the compost. She remembered she saw bucket of worms in the front of the room. Candice scooped up some of the worms using her gloved hands of course and carefully placed them in the compost. There. Done.
Oh. Hold on. She still need to water the compost. The Gryffindor took out her wand from its holster and cast Aguamenti After she made sure that the compost already got enough water, she cleaned up her work table before she left the Greenhouse.

How many things was he supposed to name? Certainly not all of them, because that would take way too long. He didn't have time for that, nor did he want to spend much more time doing his homework. Though it was better than most homeworks, because most homeworks did not involve digging in dirt, but it was still homework.
Oliver glanced down at his note card, counting how many items he had. To see if it was enough. But, in the process, he realized that he had forgotten an important step of the homework. He had listed the items, but not whether they were rich in nitrogen or carbon. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper. He had not written them down, of course. But Ellery had, and had let him borrow it for a while of course.
When he was done writing, Olly attached the note card to the bin of the compost. He brought it back to the front of the room, and located the worms professor Myers had talked about. He grabbed a few of them and dropped them in the compost. Nice. Next, he took out his wand. "Aguamenti." Was that enough? He was pretty sure he was done now.

TIME TO WORK WITH COMPOST!
Was it weird that Paulina was excited to do this homework assignment? Really, anything having to do with gardening excited her and compost was IMPORTANT. It was thrilling.
It was a part of NATURE.
Entering the greenhouse, she made a beeline towards one of the crates. She had no idea why she was drawn to it, but whatever. Paulina was ready to get to work! Pulling out her clean gloves, she put them on before rubbing her hands together. She was super excited to get started digging through the compost and seeing what materials Professor Myers had added to it. Just as she was about to dip her hands full in...she noticed the card.
Oh right.
She had forgotten about that part.
Best that she fill some of that information out before getting started. Good thing that her gloves weren't filthy yet - or her card for that matter - though that was likely to change seeing as she was working with COMPOST.
Quickly Paulina wrote down everything that she needed to:
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Deciding against saying an hello, Yoongi focused back to his task when he heard the door open . Curiously looking up, Yoongi saw Norah waving at him and he wanted to wave back but his gloved hands were dirty and if he waved he would get the dirt on him. So he did the only thing he could do to acknowledge her greeting and that was to wink at her.
Looking back down, the Gryffindor suddenly gasped softly as he realised he could have also SMILED at her. Oh well, he occasionally winked at others. Hady and Adi had been his previous winking victims muwahahaha. AHEM. A small smile played on his face as he turned over the compost finding some dead flowers. Poor pretty flowers

Okay so Chicken Manure.
It had been decided.
As for the rest of what was in here, Zander still needed to dig around. With his hands apparently because he had forgotten that there were spades available, but luckily he was wearing gloves so not like this was weird or anything, okay? But you know what was weird...? The interactions between Yoongi and Norah. That's right. Zander saw that happen. And he had seen their awkward behavior during the Astronomy field trip too.
Something was going on there. Zander had a feeling. And he'd probably bug Yoongi about it later or something, seeing as he was better friends with the Gryffindor. MHM we see this happening you two.
But uh, he was meant to see what was happening in his compost... Right. Well, then uh. Back to work. Errrrrr was that shredded paper? He pulled some of it to the side so that he could remember later when he had to write it down on his card. But there had to be some more in here, he was sure of it.
And there was definitely some grass in here too, that's why it looked kind of green. And this gross looking stuff had to be coffee grounds. He would've smelled them just to be sure.... But they were covered in manure so uh, no thank you.

That important bit of information momentarily out of the way, Paulina was ready to dig into the homework - Literally.
After adjusting her gloves to make sure that they covered up to her arms, Paulina plunged both hands into the crate. She didn't need a trowel when dealing with compost because she was used to this kind of thing and it didn't bother her. There was nothing wrong with getting your hands dirty - literally or figuratively. Gloves were all she needed.
...
Okay.
She was dealing with cow manure.
It took Paulina only seconds to work that out, because the stuff was pretty much UNIVERSAL. She used it back at home, so there was no way that she could mistake it for another type. There was also loads of manure in the crate, and that served as confirmation; if it had been the chicken variety, there would be A LOT less, because chicken manure had a VERY high amount of nutrients.
Mental note of that information stored in her brain, Paulina was ready to determine what other materials she was dealing with here.
A WINK. Norah had to take a moment to look down at her compost and break into a grin, wishing she hadn't put her hair in a bun this morning so she could hide her laughter behind it. A wink. Honestly. Coming to a decision, she looked up to catch his eye and attempted a wink of her own, not caring in the slightest that it came out painfully overdramatic. She hadn't mastered that particular art yet, apparently. Clearly she needed to practice more, just like Dot had taught her to practice bum wiggles. She hadn't exactly mastered those either, but y'know. At least she'd tried.
She bent over her compost crate and pushed some more coffee and manure aside with her gloved fingers, trying and failing not to breathe too much of the smelly air. Oh man. She thought she'd get used to the smell but she really hadn't by now. It was a shame, really, 'cause otherwise she'd be having the time of her life with this assignment. She straightened for a moment to take a deep breath of (theoretically) less-potent air, before leaning closer again. The texture of the stuff under the coffee grounds was completely different, and pretty clearly leaf-shaped even if they did look like they'd been under a lot of strain. Soggy or not, they were still leaves. Norah picked one up and inspected it just to be sure, then dropped it back in again and took off her gloves to record the ingredient on her card.
She cleaned her gloves off another time, put them back on again, and repeated the process. The next ingredient she discovered was a little less broken down than the rest of them. Huh. A little bigger, too. She took one of the objects out and brushed brown stuff off of it with her thumb. Uuuuhhhh. Something fruity? It wasn't an orange peel, for sure. It was all the wrong shape for that. OOOH! An apple core. It was an apple core. Whoever had eaten this apple had done a pretty rad job of getting as much apple as possible off the core. It was impressive, really. Her dad would be proud of whoever this was. She left the core outside the crate and took her gloves off yet another time to pick up her quill and write 'apple cores' on her label card.

Compost compost compost. It was smelly but kinda fun to sink one's hands into and get real messy with, huh. Davie had his gloves on and he pushed his glasses up his nose one last time for luck before digging into his compost crate. Right away, he found something good, something HE might have thrown away:
He continued digging, and wondered if Professor Myers was collecting all the waste from the breakfasts, lunches, and dinners the wonderful house elves made? Would the elves trust him to help them do their job? Where did all of Hogwarts' food trash go BEFORE this year, anyway? Because egg shells were definitely a by-product of an elf-made breakfast. He paused to write these things down and classify them before moving on to the next one.

Dig.
Dig.
Dig.
Paulina carefully made her way through the compost while making sure not to spill any over the sides of the crate. Was that a melon rind? Holding it up in better lighting, Paulina saw that she was right and made a mental note of it. Placing the rind back in the crate, she kept digging to see what else she could find, and it didn't take her long to find out everything else she needed to know.
Pine needles, corn cobs, and wood chips.
That part of the homework assignment completed, Paulina removed her gloves and filled out the rest of her card:
Materials in Compost: Cow manure (nitrogen), melon rinds (nitrogen), pine needles (carbon), corn cobs (nitrogen), and wood chips (carbon)
Chemical Composition of Compost: More nitrogen than carbon
Looking over her card, Paulina saw that everything she recorded was correct. Time to add some water and place worms inside the crate so that they could help with the composting process. Since her gloves were dirty, Paulina cleaned them with Scourgify before putting them on again. Even if she didn't care overly about getting dirty, she didn't want soil under her nails; she had just put on a new shade of nail polish last night and didn't want to ruin it.

Continuing onward, Davie dug in and pulled up a handful of sawdust. Sweet, that was something with carbon in it. He'd have to write that down. He also dug up some potato peels, wet leaves, and recognized those two were high in nitrogen. He'd have to peel off his glove and add those to his list before he forgot.

Once Paulina had made sure the compost looked exactly like it should - because she HAD been digging through it - she made her way over to the bucket of worms. Some people might be squeamish over the creatures, but she was not one of them. Worms were a part of nature and they were IMPORTANT. These guys helped soil construction AND the recycling of organic waste.
WORMS WERE NECESSARY.
Taking a decent amount in her gloved hands, Paulina made her way back to the crate. Carefully she spread them out over the compost, watching as they buried themselves inside it. Now all she needed to do was add some water, and she would be done.
Not wanting to use her wand, Paulina grabbed a watering can and filled it with what she judged to be the right amount of water needed. Bit by bit she sprinkled it over the compost, making sure to give every area juuuuuust the right amount of coverage. A lot of people didn't know how important it was to not overdo watering, but the fact was that moderation was the key.
That was how a lot of things worked.
The watering can was placed back where it belonged, and Paulina set about cleaning her gloves and work area so that they looked spotless - or as spotless as they ever would be. With that, she left the greenhouse and made her way back to the castle.

Alright, one or two more digs through his compost and Davie would have a nice little list here. He reached in again and came up with a handful of something very round and pellet-like, almost like muggle musket balls. Were these... were those... Davie caught a whiff of them and winced a little. Uh, yeah. Rabbit turds. That was nitrogen rich alright.
He reached in for something damp-ish to wipe his gloves on and found a few tea bags scattered in. Oh good! Davie knew those were high in carbon. He also pulled out some damp copies of The Quill which had been scattered in there, and dried his hands with those. Alright, time to finish his notes.

After digging around in the compost for a bit longer, Zander Adair came to the conclusion that there wasn't anything more to be found in there. He had discovered it all, he was sure. So er, now he was done right? Wrong. He still had to write it all down... Riiiiiight.
The Gryffindor slowly removed his gloves, casting a quick cleaning spell on them and sticking them back into his bag. Then he pulled out an index card as well and a quill for the writing bit. Erm, he was meant to talk about what he had found right? 'Cause honestly, it had been a while since he had read the notice. Ahem. Heh.

Compost:
Composed of: chicken manure (nitrogen rich)
Items found in compost:
paper - carbon rich
coffee grounds- nitrogen rich
grass clippings- nitrogen rich
Overall: I think the compost is more nitrogen rich.
And now he was done, right? Wrong.
Merlin Professor Myers, how much did you want from these kids?! Zander Adair was gonna go insane with all this work. Just sayin'.
But he was almost done, so he'd put up with it for the moment being. 'Cause being a good example and all. Even though he was super hungry right about now. Worms. Right. Now he had to put his gloves BACK ON. And he decided to carry his compost crate over to the worms rather than carry the worms over to it, y'know incase he dropped them or something. So he reached into the bucket and grabbed a handful, dumbing them into the compost, before cleaning his gloves yet again and setting them into his bag.
Oh and also, "Aguamenti!" he added just a bit of water, not wanting to overwhelm the compost with an entire flood, "Finite," and with that he was FINALLY DONE.
Sweet Merlin.
That took long enough.

Tia made her way out the greenhouses where they'd been working in the last lesson to complete her homework. It didn't seem like it would be that difficult; in truth the difficulty probably lied in figuring out nitrogen rich versus carbon rich.
Taking a spot in front of one of the compost crates that looked like it hadn't already been dug through, Tia turned over the card and added a few notes to it:

Owen tried to think back on their previous lesson as he bounded over to the Greenhouses. He had a bit of problem differentiating carbon rich from nitrogen rich things soooo he was conscious about Professor Myers' task for them. Upon arriving, the young Hufflepuff immediately picked a crate to work on.
But before starting he first greeted the older girl (Tia) who had a crate close to him. "Hi, good afternoon." Beam! Oh. She was a Ravenclaw, was she not? Maybe she would be kind enough to help him identifying nitrogen rich carbon rich items and vice versa? He hoped so.

Hokai. Now came the best part of playing with compost--- adding the worms! Davie grinned as he reached into the bucket and pulled out two handfuls of worms. He cradled them in his hands, gently tucking them against his shirt and not caring at all about getting dirty, and then made his way back to his compost. CRATE #43. PREPARE TO BE BOARDED AERATED BY THESE EARTHWORMS!
Giggling as he dumped them in, the eleven-year-old then stripped off his gloves and got out his wand. "Aguamenti!" the boy cast confidently, watering the compost until it looked good and soaked and dark and healthy. Davie also made certain to rinse off his gloves and clean up his work station, because his mum had made sure to teach him to clean up after his own messes.
His homework all done, Davie made certain he had his compost list with him and then headed back to the common room to write it up!

Tia had fully expected everyone to be practically done with interpreting their composts. At least it seemed like most of the crates in the room had been sifted through, so when a first year entered, the sixth year had to beam that she was not the last one! "Hi there! She underlined the bit about manure and made a note to ask Myers if there was an easy way to tell what sort of manure one was dealing with. As she continued to dig through and noted she was finding lots of food waste, which she was pretty sure was more nitrogen rich. It was almost like this compost bin came directly from their meal last night.
"Hey, so I found some tea leaves in mine, but this confusing, cause coffee grinds are nitrogen rich, but tea bags are carbon rich. But is it the tea bag themselves that are rich in carbon cause of the paper, but whats contained within seems more like it'd be nitrogen rich as it'd seem more similar to coffee grinds?" Tia started a long-winded rant, her quill hovering incisively. "I'm Tia, by the way, you're a first year, yea?"

Owen began to dig through the compost...with his hands. Glove-covered hands. He reached in and was able to come up with a clump of dead leaves. Okay, that was one item to be added on the list. One he had to keep mentally for now because it would take too much time if he took off his gloves just to list what items he found on the compost onto the card. So he'll just list them all in one go.
More digging...and then...OH. Banana peels. What were banana peels again? Ugh. He wasn't sure. He'll think about that later.
Or maybe not.
Because as Owen took a pause in his digging, the older Ravenclaw girl next to him began to talk and even asked him a question. Owen gave her a hesitant grin at first, "I'm not...really sure. But what's inside the tea bags are basically tea leaves, right? And leaves are carbon. Sooooo." GRIN. And to the question if he was first year, "Yes maa'm. From Hufflepuff House and you're from Ravenclaw. My name's Owen."

Tia smiled as she glanced over at her neighbor's desk to see what he was finding. Banana peels as opposed to orange rinds, which she had, but she guessed they were in the same criteria.
"That's kind of what i was thinking..." she beamed at her new young friend. Owen. It was kind of weird though to just find tea leaves. Maybe this was the compost from the divination tower though, not the great hall. Or just a mix of the two, cause she was pretty sure chicken bones and potato skins wouldn't be used in the divination tower, but what did she know? She wasn't exactly one with the most divine eye.
Some parchment bits too, she smiled at a memory of arguing with her brother about whether they could eat paper or not. Carbon-rich, definitely. Also high in fiber, but alas Myers wasn't looking for that nutrient.

Owen returned the beam with one of his own before returning to his work. Digging further, he came across remnants of feathers. Whoa. Were those birdy feathers? He wasn't sure. But they were light in color. Maybe Professor Myers had birdy pets? Hmm... Owen decided let that matter slide for now as he continued to dig and dig. Fruits peels, more leaves, a few bits of paper, more more more dry leaves. It looked like this compost was mostly composed of leaves.
And that was it.
Owen gathered all the compost back into the crate, making sure there was no spillage or whatnot, pulled off his gloves and sat back next to the crate. Listing time! He pulled off the card from earlier and started to fill it up.

Speaking of instincts, they were telling him that he just found a new great friend. Owen chanced a look at his companion and suddenly had an idea. Finishing up her list on her compost, Tia decided her compost was more nitrogen-rich items. It was when Owen stood up and asked her about grabbing some worms from the bucket up front that she remembered that part of the task. Along with the watering, which she figured she ought to water Owen's compost bucket; it was the least she could do since he offered to get her some worms and all.
"Sure, that'd be great. I'll add water to our compost crates." She grinned, as she withdrew her wand. "Aguamenti" and a sprout of water came from her wand into her bucket. And she did it again over Owen's crate. He can add the worms to their crates - team effort!
