Default Dueling Club - Meeting #1

Dueling Club Meeting #1

Please remember that all DADA Classroom rules, Dueling Club Rules and SS site rules apply.

The hall of the Dueling Club is very much like the training hall. Large windows let in streamers of morning light, or the black blanket of evening. Benches line the walls under the windows, and stone columns soar to a slightly less dizzying height of rafters and beams. This hall, however, joined just off the main training hall, is shorter and narrower. The tiling on the floor makes the room appear as if it has a long runway straight down the middle.

A runway in which Sabel stands in the very center of. His outfit is a dress of combat robes, leather armor over the chest, arms and legs and a very serious expression. Similar outfits are laid out to one side of him, all of varying sizes and fittings.

Typical to DADA meetings and classes, there are no chairs in the vicinity. Just floor space and the benches along the walls. Dare you take a seat? Or should you take a stand?

-------------------------------------------------
OOC: The meeting will start in approximately 11 hours. Please keep in mind this is a general overview meeting, and we will be moving quite quickly. As such, please be mindful of chatter. Questions are welcome and encouraged! Welcome to the first meeting Duelers!

Okaaaaay. That's very long speech. She never really a fan of bowing especially to other people, she prefer when people bowing to her. But since its required to do so she didn't have any choice but to follow what Professor Dakest said. He only asked Zeke to do the bowing thingy, that mean the rest of them didn't need to do that right now, yes?

And then the man explained about everything they need to know about dueling. How it works and such. Candice raised her hand in the air. Over here, Sir! "Sir, how we do that? Challenge someone to a duel I mean. Do we need to send them duel invitation by owl? Or just go to the person and say that 'I challenge you to a duel?" He did say that they could challenge other students. "And can we refuse if someone challenge us to a duel?" Not that she's planning to do that. She never back down from a challenge. She just being curious here.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Yes, on the matter of partners, Adi didn't mind whom he went up against. The only persons he had ever dueled were Benny, AJ, Beverly and his guy bestie's ex. He remained silent now as Dakest continued, taking in as much of the information as he could. He eyed his Professor back just as seriously as he himself was being watched.

So much information though. The Hufflepuff tried to make a note of all the 'practice' tips that were being given when Dakest fixed his gaze on Paulina. But gosh! Adi just wanted to get started on things NOW! Standing here was boring though beneficial but he just wanted to do something else. Heh.

First of all, that combat robes that was worn by the Professor was cool. Were they gonna get it? She was gonna ask but then Professor Dakest said that they're gonna get it after this meeting. Good! And second.... about the opponent. Yeah. "Professor Dakest, do we have to pick our opponent at the same level or maybe the same year as us? Because it doesn't sound fair if an older student pick a younger one as his or her opponent."

And also chicken. Seriously, how dare the older students pick the younger ones? Well, not all the younger students were weak, though. It's just... unfair! There's no benefit of the older students picked the younger opponent. And not to mention that it seemed like a form of bully, only it's formal.

Well this was exciting. Just look at all that equipment they were eventually going to wear! Davie was nervous but confident he could take on some of his classmates in a duel. He especially wanted to duel Blaise Bellaire, the big bully. But he'd save that for later. For now, the little Ravenclaw in glasses was busy writing down every last word Dakest had to say. Or as many as he could, anyway. No questions over here, sir!

There was a lot of information being thrown their way. Paulina had to admit that the more she listened, the more interested she became. Fighting still made her a little nervous, however.

She wondered who she would be duelling. It would be fun to go against one of her friends, but maybe she'd have fun either way. It was hard to not feel nervous, but she was telling herself that everything would work out great in the end. These were important skills to learn even if she hoped to never need to use them in her day to day life. Auror work wasn't cut out for her and she had no interest in fighting Dark Wizards while traveling abroad.

His attention returned to the rest of the students. "As for what spells you may and may not use, there will be a list up before your first duel. Obviously, unforgivable curses are excluded, as are some of the dark art spells that opponents in your real life will likely use. This, is for your own safety. If you have questions about these spells, about how to defend against them, I will do my best to answer them. But they are not to be experimented with in these walls."

Shifting his stance, Sabel clasped his hands behind his back. "There will be Spell Assignments and Challenges for you to accomplish as you see fit during your practice time. The Spell Assignments will allow you to use new spells in your duels. The Challenges will encourage you to develop your dueling skills, thoughts and regulation of your emotions and there may be bonuses afforded with the completion of these."

Simple enough, right?

"You will not have a Spell Assignment this meeting. I would like you all to go into your first duel without extra spells crowding your heads. Learn how to think, learn how to move, learn how to adapt. To assist you with this, there will be a Challenge posted on the board at the end of the hall," he made a motion there, "at the end of this meeting. Once you pick up your uniforms when I dismiss you, you may go there and check it out."

And they could start tonight if they were super stoked. He had no doubt some would.

Returning his hands behind his back, Sabel rocked on his heels, letting all the information soak in. Were there more questions?

It always amazed Benzi how differently his head worked depending on how much he was interested in what was happening. He could never for the life of him remember anything that had happened in History of Magic unless he wrote it all down. And while Herbology was okay and whatever, if it didn't have that practical side to it he wouldn't have been able to do any of it.

But Defense? Defense came naturally to him. He took notes on the important bits but mainly listened, because he knew that he was so interested in it he'd just remember it all without really trying. It's why he didn't bring a quill and parchment to the meeting today, because he knew that he was going to remember every single word.

Especially the professor's next words, which had Benzi's mind instantly whirl a mile a minute. He raised his eyebrow and nodded slowly. "Yes, Professor." He could take anything but 'you can't take part in this tournament.' There was, of course, no reason possible reasson for Dakest to tell him such a thing but just in case that happened let it be known Benzi would throw a tantrum to make a four year old jealous. Just sayin'.

The biggest thing that piqued her curiosity was when he said he wasn't allowed to use the skills he learned in Auror training for them at Hogwarts. Evie was smart and understood why. She didn't know what his training had involved... but she wanted to know and she wanted to learn. Evie was going to be an Auror one day; sooner than later, she hoped and she wanted to be the absolute best when she joined the YATI next year. She wanted to know everything Dakest knew.

So, yes, she did have one question. But she would ask him later, in private.

Listening to Dakest answer all the questions, her ears seemed to perk up when the professor asked to see Benzi after the meeting. Evie exchanged glances between her boyfriend and the professor, curious and jealous and wondering what in the world he would speak to Benzi about and if she could get away with eavesdropping.

"What's that for?" she whispered almost silently to Benzi. Had he any idea? Was HE going to get special training? What about her?

Oh, and there was Evie. He smiled at her silently but with a gentle squeeze of her hand, let it go moments after she'd taken his. Couldn't get distracted at the moment, so sorry. Plus it kind of looked strange to be holding hands in a meeting with Dakest, even if they were both at the back. He just wasn't very comfortable with it.

Speaking of comfortable, Benzi shrugged. "No idea, I guess I'll see after the meeting," he whispered back, eyes staying only on Dakest.

SPOILER!!: Sabel!

Especially when he was greeted with such a response as Browne gave him. Some of the students, he was sure, would be incredibly interesting to duel. And he had no illusions that he could learn a thing or two from them.

As it was, the boy's whole demeanour and relation to both his look and the demonstration of the bow had the slightest of smiles touching the corner of his lips. Straightening, Sabel nodded to the kid. "Thank you, Mr. Browne."

And yes, he would most certainly be writing to Emily about this.

His attention flicked from the Gryffindor to the Snake that had taken place beside him. And the smile he had? It faded, but only from his lips. His eyes still held it as he took note of the young girl's stance and determination.

There was no doubt about it. The tournament would be an interesting one.

The pair standing side-by-side ticked off a reminder in his mind. "One thing I should note now, is that of partners and challenges. While the duel will be assigned, and you will have no further choice as to who you duel than how you do with your points, this room is available for your practice as you see fit. During the tournament, you will be matched by grades. During your own time, you may challenge who you like."

His gaze shifted, roaming across the gathered students. "There is an rule to this. You may only challenge students in your year, or one year above or below you. An exception exists here, in that younger students are allowed to challenge older students, regardless of separation in age." A half-smirk touched his lips. "Do so at your own risk."

His gaze snagged on Rehman, and held there for a few moments. Truth was, he was surely expecting a question or comment from the energetic Hufflepuff. That there was none after a few minutes of scrutinizing was a bit surprising.

So much so, that Sabel quickly ran through the list of things to tackle in his mind. He supposed he could tag on a bit more information. "At the end of the tournament, the winners will have the opportunity to duel an intriguing opponent. I will not tell you who that will be for each grade, but you can rest assured that said opponent will be a well earned challenge. There will also be an award of points."

Here his expression changed once again, to that serious tone that allowed for no foolishness. "The greatest reward of participating, however, will be the skills you learn. Life long and lasting skills, that might one day save your life, or the life of someone else. What you put into this club, ladies and gentlemen, is what you will get out of it."

And speaking of input versus output, Sabel's gaze landed on the still shoeless and sockless Prince. Perhaps he had not made himself clear enough by being gracious to not individualize the kid. A breath left him as he continued. "All rules are to be followed and adhered to without deviation. Due to the dangerous nature of this club, ignorance of those rules will not be tolerated. Keep yourself safe and your classmates safe by following them."

Really, common sense. But he was all too aware of where common sense went in the heat of a duel. Even a duel among friends. A disturbing memory flashed through him, sending a cold shiver through his spine. One he shook off before he could think on it much longer.

"Prince. If you could please put your shoes and socks on. It should be habit in this room, as I expect to see a good deal of debris and uneven footing in the upcoming weeks."

Which brought him to his next point. A fun one. His gaze took in all the duelers gathered. "Which means that you have permission to use your environment as needed. There is sometimes no greater ally than the rock beneath your feet or the sky above your head. Don't worry about any destruction you will cause. The castle is easy enough to repair. Just......don't bring the roof down or eradicate the floor." Just a small request. "Duels should be confined to this room, though I am very aware that is rarely the case in real circumstances."

"Are we not?" The kid got quite the raised eyebrow. "First lesson. Never assume you know." And then there was the hint of a small smile. "If I didn't have so much to go over, I might take such a sentiment as an invitation to become your opponent."

Hopefully, the kid would understand the meaning and the lesson behind those words.

Straightening his expression, Sabel considered the boy. "True enough, but you've forgotten a third option. Laughter is commonly an expression of nervousness." His words turned to the rest of the club. "If you are going to use your expressions and your words to throw off your opponent, as is a good tactic, make sure that you are convincing in every other way. The slightest deviation can be noticed in as small a thing as how you hold your wand. And it can mean death, or life. So if you aim to deceive, do it as if it is a truth your life counts on."

As for the exclamation about the lack of helmets, that had Sabel smiling. "Can't distract you too much from the game of reality. You wouldn't wear a helmet everyday. You would wear clothes. It is best to practice without it, as you'll learn to guard it very quickly. A limb you can do without. A head, you cannot."

And perhaps, that was a bit of unconventional teaching right there.

His gaze went back to Hyland, and he shook his head slightly, though he spoke to the whole room. He was sure everyone had the same question about the purpose of the bowing. "If and when you enter a situation where it is a death duel, you will be very fortunate if you know so beforehand. Most times such circumstances come without warning, comment or indication. So always be on your guard. The bow here is to remind ourselves that we are not in such a duel, though we practice for it, and to remind ourselves that we are dueling friends, not enemies."

Turning his wand between his fingers, Sabel hesitated a long moment before speaking again. "I am asking you to train with the mindset that your life will matter in the tournament, but it is important that we know, and acknowledge that is not the case. While you may not understand it now, and I hope you never have to, there is a very significant difference between having that glimmer of understanding, and not. Regardless of if you are dueling friends, or enemies."

His gaze returned to Hyland. "We bow, here in this club, to show respect to one another, and a respect for the laws and rules of the club. In the world out there, your bow is the moment you draw your wand."

Letting that final statement ring through the air, Sabel took the moment of silence to look around at the faces at the club. A lot of the early evening energy had worn off, and there was a solemn commitment and attentiveness he had only hoped for before now. They were listening. Good.

"After the bow, as long as you respect the rules, you are free to use spells to your need and imagination. Do not be afraid to combine spells, or use them in new and interesting ways. While I do not want you taking these duels down the hallways, do not remain stagnant. Practice moving your feet. Practice using your environment. Practice doing the unexpected, and practice being expected. How you learn to duel here, will stick with you and reflect in your duels in the future. Here it is safe to learn and experiment. Here, you should learn how to adapt."

Looking around the rest of the room, Sabel's gaze hinged on Rider. For a long moment, he watched the kid hanging back in the shadows. Finally, he nodded to himself. "Rider, a word with you after the meeting."

There really wasn't a better way to ask, and it was always a question of when he might run into the kid again. The castle had got surprisingly big.

------------------------------------
OOC: Howdy all! Thought I'd tackle some of the responses that came up now, and gradually move us along. We are still taking questions and comments! (Again that's the main purpose of this meeting, so please ask away :3)

Meeting will close tomorrow at around midnight GMT-6. Sorry this one is so short >.O

And I will have that spell list up for you before your first duel.

Was that a smile he saw? Zeke's lips twitched a fraction to mirror Sabel's though really, the thanks was not required. "Any time, Professor," he replied. Because he was perfectly fine with demonstrations and the like. In fact, he hoped he would be called upon again, he was keen to show his worth.

The additional information they received regarding challenges and rules and safety and not losing heads because they were essential for survival and all that jazz, was appreciated, and like a sponge, he soaked it all in.

Every word. Hanging on EVERY word.

With discussions of spell assignments, his brows raised in interest. Learning as they went, he was cool with that. But what he liked the sound of most, was their first duel. No prior spell work, just demonstrating and learning how to think, to move, and to adapt as they went. He liked to think he would be able to hold his own in that regard. But time would tell.

It was the mention of challenges that made him smile though, because he was more than happy to put in the time and the effort to excel at this, and those challenges would be key in doing so. He would be all over it like fire on a phoenix. He was ITCHING to grab his uniform and check it out now, but he exercised his patience and waited for the go-ahead.

It was the whisper of indiscernible words that caught Sabel's attention, bringing it back to Rider and the young woman at his side. It took a bit of squinting to see exactly who it was that was beside the kid, and when Sabel recognized her, his eyebrow went up. He didn't miss the hand-holding, as brief as it was. It was too curious a thing to miss.

But good. He had hoped to see Shacklebolt here. Might as well kill two birds with one stone. "Shacklebolt, if you could stick around as well."

SPOILER!!: Yoongi

Maybe it was time to practise his spells nonverbally more often. Because everyone knew that people who could do nonverbal spells had an advantaged. That was why the Gryffindor looked next to him at Adi. The Prefect was pretty good at nonverbal spells, he would be an interesting opponent.

With a grin, Yoongi faced the Professor again when he was being talked to and that grin dissapeared in a second. "Opponent?" he said in a way more higher voice than usual."uhm no need to think that Sir haha!".......wait...the man was right. People did laugh when they got nervous. The Gryffindor stopped laughing and cleared his throat.

Yeah he knew they didnt wear helmets everyday. That would be really weird fashion trend... but he had seen muggle fights on tv and sometimes they wore helmets. Maybe it was better to not have though. He would learn so many spells to protect his precious face.

As the Professor went back to holding his hands behind his back and rocking on his heels, which seemed to be a signature move of him, Yoongi's hand shot up in the air again and waved it around a bit. "Ooooh Sir! Another question...sorry if they're annoying... but that ministry training you mentioned earlier? I'm really curious to know what happens at a training like that that the school forbids to teach...is it like, practising under an unforgivable curse or something?" He leaned a bit closer to the person nearest him and muttered silently "a candy bet saying he's going to say that information is classified" But he was curious and he would bet his hairspray that he wasnt the only one. "Also!" also also! "Will we be learning to defend ourselves like muggles as well?" though he wouldnt know how one could block a spell without a wand....wandless magic? Merlins Beard that would be so cool!

Hyland got a knowing grin-smirk from Sabel as he stuttered through a decline of a possible duel and cut off his own laughter. Point made, and well received. Good. The kid would go far, learning so quickly.

And asking so many questions. The young man seemed to be full of them today, and every other day their paths crossed. Sabel found himself idly wondering if he had ever inquired into Hyland's career choices. Likely not Auror. It would take it's toll on the hair too quickly.

"Well, for starters there are no permission forms. No armor. And a guarantee of injury." Something that he desperately wanted to avoid here at Hogwarts. As quickly as one could learn from a hard hit that left a mark, he didn't need parents or the Board of Govenors breathing down their necks. And he preferred to keep all students rather guilt free and out of the hospital wing. "Some of the spells and scenarios we were exposed to are also in-feasible here. Due to either technicality or difficulty, or morality. Don't imagine many of you would show up if a knee-reversal hex was a possible tactic in this club." Didn't imagine any of the parents would sign the waiver either.

"No unforgivables though. No matter the training, we did not, and do not, train to become the very thing we are fighting. That goes for this club. Train, develop yourselves and advance yourselves. But do not do it at a cost of your own good. There are lines we should not cross, not even consider crossing. What you practice here, will hold as habit in the real world. So choose carefully." Easier said than done. Easier broken than not, in the right - or rather wrong - circumstances.

The next question got a side-smile from him. "You are most indeed encouraged and welcome to use muggle means. However, as the point of this tournament is magic based, your options to use these methods will be limited. There are a certain number of points allotted for muggle maneuvers, so choose wisely."

SPOILER!!: Daxton

For a moment, Daxton did nothing, only cast his eyes about the room, or more specifically at the feet of everyone else assembled. But then he did as had been requested, reluctantly pulling on first his socks, then his shoes, all the while listening to the ongoing lecture. He took his sweet time, too, because they just felt wrong, and then they felt even, and then even more wrong and uncomfortable, and several times Daxton felt the urge to untie and retie the laces. More reasons to never wear shoes.

Dakest had a lot to say, it seemed, and by the time Daxton looked back up, shifting his feet inside his shoes in an attempt to make them more comfortable, he was still going strong with the information. Luckily, the Ravenclaw's memory was basically perfect, and though it did not look as though he had been very focused throughout the shoe debacle, he absolutely had been. It was all holding his attention very well.

He considered everything, watching Dakest closely very closely, scrutinising him as his expression morphed into a thoughtful frown. Daxton likely would not have looked away at all were it not for the fact that one of the older students, Hyland, his name was, asked a question that caught Daxton's interest: the question regarding non-magical methods of defence.

The first year looked across at the Gryffindor student for a moment, before his gaze invariably found Daxton again, and he waited for an answer. He had still not managed to cast a single official spell whilst at school, thanks to his limited (or, at the moment, non-existent) verbal capabilities, but normal methods of defence would not require that at all. Normal methods of defence would be quite beneficial, at least until Daxton could cast spells of his own, verbally or non-verbally. And he had been trying.

Did he even dare to hope that the Duelling Club would allow for something like that?

Well, no. Daxton Prince did not 'hope'. But he could be curious.

Well, it seemed that Prince could get the memo if it was more directly directed. Which, was fair enough on it's own. The instructions had been somewhat vague, if one wished to consider them vague. A mental note was made and filed away with all the other mental notes about curious student habits and tendencies.

The forward-lean and look towards Hyland at the boy's question didn't go unnoticed. Perhaps it was a good time then, to extrapolate a bit more? "Keep in mind that close combat between wizards is much more dangerous than any hand-to-hand combat. There is never any way to know if the wizard you engage has another wand, or weapon, hidden up their sleeves or in their boots. Proximity can win or loose you a duel. So bide your timing well and with care."

One thing for sure, Henric couldn't wait to start!

Turning slightly, Sabel caught sight of Henric among the ranks. The young man got a considering look. "Some of the challenges may afford additional points to your ability to use muggle means, or the points of your health or magic. Some, but not all. Remember, these challenges and assignments are for your overall benifit. That, is an award in and of itself."

A waving hand in the air caught his attention, pulling his gaze over. He nearly laughed too, and fought momentarily to school his expression. "You may be as formal, or informal as you like. That is barring a punch to the face or any such strange way of starting things. Remember, this is to learn and practice, so challenges should be done with some decorum of respect for either party."

A slow nod left him. "You bring up a good point. If you are challenged to a practice duel, you do not have to accept. The tournament duels that you will be assigned to, however, you are expected to show up to and take part in. Extenuating circumstances will be considered carefully."

She was already EYEING people up. TOTAL EYEING. Because she was gonna DUEL THEM ALL! EVERYONE! In her efforts to become the best, even though she wanted to WIN, she didn't in the slightest mind losing, because you'd learn things from that and then one day BAM! YOU WOULD WIN EVERYTHING ALWAYS. Just like her mum! EEEEEEEEK! Her mother had, in her fourth year, taken on the head girl and head boy at the same time and TOTALLY WON AND EVERYTHING and Charlotte wanted to be like THAT oh gosh oh gosh she soooo wanted to.

His gaze slipped to the nearly bursting Kettleburn, who looked like she might vibrate out of her seat at any moment. Really, he thought his words might have put the members to sleep. Apparently, it was doing just the opposite? Or was it simply the prospect of getting started and getting all geared up?

A quick glance went along Kettleburn's line of sight to the uniforms. Perhaps it was almost time to let them at it?

So much information though. The Hufflepuff tried to make a note of all the 'practice' tips that were being given when Dakest fixed his gaze on Paulina. But gosh! Adi just wanted to get started on things NOW! Standing here was boring though beneficial but he just wanted to do something else. Heh.

And there was another one. With wide eyes filled with that energetic excitement. Really, there had to be something about evening classes and meetings that made the kids so life-like. It was a stark contrast to the morning classes he often held. Speaking of which...

"The practice room will be open at all hours, for your convenience. The tournaments will take place most often in the afternoon. If you are not scheduled for a duel, you are welcome to take to the sidelines to watch those duels that are ongoing. Those who are not in the club are welcome to come too. Keep in mind, however, that the slightest noise or movement you make, could cost a dueler their duel. And I'm sure they will be aware enough to remember who and what cost them their standing."

So, quiet. No cheering. No rowdiness. Though, the topic did make him wonder as to if he should put up some charms on the benches.

Sabel's attention turned to Burton, his eyebrow twitching into an arch. "For the tournament, you will be assigned your dueling partner based on point ranks, and age. It is unlikely that grades will cross too much during the tournament." A breath left him. "The practice room is another story. A member may challenge a student in their grade, or one grade above or below them. This is to allow a diversity of dueling scenarios and partners, as well as skill levels. Older does not always mean winner. Keep that in mind."

And there was a slight smile to accompany the statement. "That being said, younger students are free to challenge as high up on the age scale as they would like. At the discretion of their own risk, or bravery, that is."

Or as many as he could, anyway. No questions over here, sir!

The scratch-scratch of a quill on a notepad caught Sabel's attention and he found one of the students diligently taking notes. It gave him pause, made him blink. He hadn't thought anyone would record the meeting, but then again, he really should have expected the unexpected. And maybe slowed down a bit. Inserted a few more pauses. Made it a bit easier for the note takers.

But, better late than never, right? And so he took a pause now.

SPOILER!!: Paulina

It was hard to not feel nervous, but she was telling herself that everything would work out great in the end. These were important skills to learn even if she hoped to never need to use them in her day to day life. Auror work wasn't cut out for her and she had no interest in fighting Dark Wizards while traveling abroad.

The pause gave him a moment to take stock of who else was in the room. Faces he had skimmed over or only been able to acknowledge briefly. Now, taking that moment of silence to allow the scribbling pen to catch up, he could consider each one individually. Along with the excitement, there also seemed to be some reservation. These got a longer look of consideration from him.

He was curious to see how they would all do. What techniques they would use. How inventive and creative they would be.

SPOILER!!: Benzi

Sabel's attention returned to Benzi, catching the acknowledgement and the reservation in the boy's expression. It almost got a smile from him. Almost.

SPOILER!!: Zeke

The additional information they received regarding challenges and rules and safety and not losing heads because they were essential for survival and all that jazz, was appreciated, and like a sponge, he soaked it all in.

Every word. Hanging on EVERY word.

With discussions of spell assignments, his brows raised his interest.

And it seemed like the questions were dying out and the excitement was building. As evidenced by Zeke and the other members. Perhaps it was best to let them loose now.

Taking a step back and to the side, away from the unifroms, where he was sure there was about to be a stampede. "Remember, use not only your skills, but your creativity, ingenuity and resourcefulness. Don't stay stagnant and don't try and pull out the playbook. That is one reason I am not demonstrating to you today. I want you to see what you can do, without a template to try and copy."

Tucking his wand back into his holster, Sabel gave the gathered students one more visual sweep. "On that note, you are all dismissed. Please come up and grab a uniform for yourself. There are enough sizes here that each of you should be able to find something. If you have any further questions or concerns, I'll stick around for a bit. The Challenge will be posted at the far end of the hall, which you may begin at any time. The first round of tournament duelers will be posted shortly."[/b]

Was he a bit nervous about kicking this whole thing off? Undoubtedly so. There were so many things that could, are were likely, to go wrong. And yet, so many things that were likely to go right, and wonderfully so. Hopefully, there would be more of the later than the former.

OOC:[i] Hiya all!!

So dueling club meeting #1 is officially done. However, I'll leave the thread open for the weekend so you can post your kids getting their uniforms and what-not if you would like. If you have questions for Sabel, you can also post them here, otherwise PM me and we will find a location

All permission slips must be in by October 14th. So you've got a few more days here to get them going. The challenge will be up soon, as will the first dueling rounds. As always, if you have questions just ask!

SPOILER!!: Professor Dakest

There was nothing at all left to be said or done. Professor Dakest look didn't go unnoticed at all and it honestly didn't faze her. All it did was make her more determined to prove to herself that she could handle this. Protecting ones self was something everyone needed to know and she'd make sure that she got everything she could from the experience.

Nothing that was being said went unheard. And without any questions that came to mind the moment they were all dismissed Hady made her way over to the uniforms. There was more then enough of them she just needed the proper size. Silently shuffling through them she came across one that would work for her after just a few moments. Pulling it free from the others she draped it over her over. "Have a nice day Professor," she gave a nod of her head to him before leaving the meeting making a mental not to check for the Challenge that was posted on the way. No point in wasting time waiting if she didn't have to.

He was still absorbing information, and while he was temporarily rendered mute, he really didn't have much to say regardless. It was clear, logical, and whatever he didn't know he was sure he would pick up along the way. The processes were clear enough, now all he had to do was think of strategy. Against someone his own year group, he didn't doubt he'd be in with a fair shot, but against someone his senior (which he was keen to give a shot) he needed to know how to give himself an advantage... and strategy had never really been his strong suit. Act now, think later. This was something he was going to have to remedy.

...

BUT....

UNIFORMS!

Without looking too eager, Zeke approached the pile with Hady and started rifling through it until he found one that looked like it would fit. He held it against his chest, assessing whether or not it was the right fit for him and was content with the choice when it appeared it would fit like a glove - not tight fitting one though - and not loose either. JUST RIGHT.

With his uniform draped over his arm, Zeke stood off to the side for a moment. In the time that it had taken for him to collect his uniform, his head was in a mild state of disarray. He was torn between heading to investigate the 'challenge' they had, and also torn between seeking counsel from Sabel. But with the mess of questions in his head, he wasn't sure where to start. They weren't organisational questions, he had none where the running of the club was concerned.... but he DID have questions.

Another moment passed before he decided he would first assess the challenge, and then make some sense of his questions. A trip to Sabel's office wasn't out of the question.

"Thank's, Professor," he farewelled, a short nod signalling his leave.

Challenge. HE WANTED TO SEE THE CHALLENGE.

More mental note taking from Dakest's words. Adi vaguely wondered how on earth he was going to remember everything for this Dueling Club. He felt as though his brain was overloading from all the information but then again, he did like a challenge. Mhmm.

And then it was uniform time! The Hufflepuff bounded over grab one that was his size. It didn't take him long to find one. Adi looked over for Benny. Had he gotten his uniform and ready to go? It didn't matter. The Puffer would be waiting on him, anyway. But he turned to Dakest. "Thanks, Professor! See you around.'' Not leaving quite yet though because of bestie.

It was too curious a thing to miss.

But good. He had hoped to see Shacklebolt here. Might as well kill two birds with one stone. "Shacklebolt, if you could stick around as well."

Don't imagine many of you would show up if a knee-reversal hex was a possible tactic in this club." There are enough sizes here that each of you should be able to find something.

Was holding hands such a crime? She caught the look Dakest gave her just a split second before Benzi had let go of her hand. It didn't mean she wasn't paying attention; just that she enjoyed the comfort of Benzi's hand (and her hands were COLD, okay).

But all thoughts of hand-holding disappeared when Professor Dakest mentioned that he wanted to see her after the meeting as well. Hiding all smugness on the inside, the Ravenclaw simply nodded at him and let him continue with the meeting. It was, admittedly, difficult to not get distracted and wonder what he wanted to talk to them about, but she managed to focus on the last few minutes. As soon as he finished and dismissed everyone, Evie followed the crowd of people to the uniforms. Her mind was busy wondering and anticipating what Dakest might say to them -- and she had time to think about it considering she and Benzi had been way in the back and had to fight their way through the rest of the students to get their uniforms.

Finally, Evie made her way to what was left of the uniforms and got all she needed in her size. Assuming Benzi was somewhere nearby and following her, she draped the uniform over her arm and approached Professor Dakest.

"You wanted to see us, professor?" she asked calmly, though not so on the inside.

Evie had to stick around too? Well. Benzi side glanced at his girlfriend and was glad for the dark because he was decidedly unimpressed. Dakest had wanted to talk to him. What's he gotta talk to Evie for too? He dueled with her last year, now it was his turn! Plus he saw him noticing the hand holding and the last thing Benzi wanted was for Dakeset to think he was distracted by a girlfriend or something. Well he technically was distracted by a girlfriend because Evie was very, very distracting but that really wasn't the point.

Fine. FINE. Following closely behind and glaring at anyone who dared step on his feet, Benzi grabbed everything he needed from the now messy pile of uniforms and stepped up to Dakest. Because Evie had already spoken the seventh year merely nodded and waited for Dakest to start, resisting the urge to fold his hands across his chest.

Resentment was a good word for how Thornton felt about needing to be here. It was something that his father had insisted on, and they way the last few years had gone, Thornton Baines was in no position whatsoever to defy his father's wishes.

And so he had sat in begrudging attention listening to Professor Dakest. Bruises. No maiming. The Ravenclaw had been reviewing spells over and over again, but had no confidence whatsoever in being able to apply them spur of the moment, when they mattered most. While perhaps acquiring that skill was the reason for his father's insistence, Thornton was not, himself, convinced.

And so he stood, with a sigh, and went to go collect the armor he would need. Armor! Feet shuffling the whole way, he didn't think there was any way he would make it through even his first duel, let alone a full term's worth of meetings.

So, basically, yes. Non-magical methods were fine, which was helpful. The most Daxton could really do with a wand at the moment was send weird zaps at things, people, or animals. It did not require verbalising any incantation, so he supposed that meant it wasn't an official spell. Either way, there was only so much help it would be in a confrontation. Not that it would be completely useless.

And not that it really mattered anyway, as Daxton would not be duelling yet, and had not entered himself into the tournament. But that did not mean he did not want to learn more, for future reference. In any case, using non-magical methods did not mean getting in close proximity to someone. Trapping an opponent was always possible, as long as you were always thinking a few moves ahead, like in chess. That was how Daxton liked to think of duelling so far.

Still, he did wish he could say the incantations, he wished he could cast the spells, and he wanted to take part in the tournament. But he could not do any of those things, and that was the end of it. It was frustrating, it was annoying, and it was one of the first times Daxton had felt truly limited by being non-verbal. Sure, sometimes it got frustrating when he wanted to say something and could no, but this was on a whole different level. This was something that truly bothered him, thought Daxton planned on keeping that thought firmly to himself.

It seemed as though the meeting had barely even started, when already it was called to an end. Daxton stared at Dakest, and then looked down at his own feet. So why, why had he needed to wear his shoes and socks for this meeting? For sitting and listening and grabbing a uniform and leaving again? There did not seem to be any reason for it at all.

So he took them off again, now the meeting was officially over and he would not technically be breaking any rules. The hall was a little too busy for Daxton's liking, so he hung back until there was a gap in the throng of students collecting uniforms, and darted forwards to seek out some armour that would fit him. His urgency to get in and out quickly meant that he made quick work of the task, and as soon as he could something that fit, the Ravenclaw took his armour and his footwear and left the training hall, resolving to come back later when it was not so busy to check the challenge board. It would likely be something he would not be able to do, but he was still curious.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

The only reason he had declined a duel was because he didn’t want to embarrass himself in front of everyone else. “But I’m not saying no next time!” he answered stupidlybravely. Had they been alone, he would have said yes immediately. As he wanted to have a duel with Dakest at least once until he graduated next year. Though he wondered if he would even be a match against an auror. He doubted it, probably would be thrown around the battle field but he wanted to see how it went without actually becoming a criminal to see an auror at work. And because he DIDN’T want to become an auror he wasn’t going to know how they battled but he was still very curious. Actually, he was curious about everything…except maybe potions…and astronomy…sorry.

Yoongi looked shocked for a second when the Professor HADN’T told him ‘that’s classified information’ but instead had went to explain how they trained. He winched at the perfect timing as he was told they also used knee-reversal hexes and he unconsciously looked down at his own knees. “Pretty sure my mother would have called me back and tried to sue you, Sir” he chuckled. No but really, he was glad that the dueling club wasn’t going to be that brutal.

Nodding his head as he had understood everything about the muggle means of defending, Yoongi looked over at a little Ravenclaw boy who had seemed to be eyeing him. He smiled for a second and then looked back. He opened his mouth to ask ANOTHER question and had his hand in the air , waving it around until he had to lower it because Candice had stolen his question! He pouted as he side-eyed her but then listened to what the answer was on how to ask someone to duel. They can be informal ? uhmm….Yoongi looked around… how did one..informally ask someone for a duel? Did they like…attack out of nowhere? Oh merlin’s beard he was not ready for that T____T

And then class was dismissed. The sixth year literally skipped towards the pile of uniform and checked them out. He picked one up hand held it in his arms before skipping off the platform. “Good luck everyone, you’re going to need it against me~!” yeah that was just big talk and with a salute to the Professor he turned around and left the area.

Still leaning on the back wall as Sabel began things, he offered his colleague a bow of the head when the astronomer's name came up. Referring your duels, yes. THAT he knew about and could do. It still remained unknown as to whether or not his role would expand to acting as practice dummy.

So he was waiting on the edge of his...er...well he was standing so he wasn't really on the edge of his seat. There was some rocking back and forth on his heels however, as he waited for Sabel to throw the final blow.

But it never came.

NO TEST DUMMY FOR FLAMSTEED!

But he would just hang back here in case he was needed for anything.

Salutes to all you students. Hello and good luck? Loss of limb would not be an excuse to miss lessons, so be sure to pick up your suit and suit up!

Kyroh was sitting, listening quietly for the first time in a while as he took everything in. The up will be down, down will be up comment particularly was his favourite. And bowing? He could do that! The fifth year didn't really think he'd be that good of a duelest, but he wanted to perfect his spells and charms, and maybe even impress his parents in the process by winning something..

He rested his chin on his hand, focus on Professor Dakest only, sorry Flammy.

What if a person in like first year challenged him and he lost?? How embarrassing would that be? Would he be laughed at forever and ever and ever? Brown eyes flickered over quickly to Dima's cousin, and then Davie and he silently hoped that that situation ever arose.

Scrambling up quickly as the professor dismissed the class, Kyroh gave him a quick salute before rushing toward the uniforms. Being as tall as he was, sometimes it was hard to find things that actually fit, and he found himself often missing the days when he was shorter than everyone else. After dismissing three pairs, he picked up a fourth and grinned. Perfect. "Thank you Sirs." Flammy and Dark Arts Master himself. With out another word Kyroh left.

Stepping back so that he wasn't in the way of the mill of students that were sure to come up, Sabel clasped his hands behind his back.

SPOILER!!: Hady

Nothing that was being said went unheard. And without any questions that came to mind the moment they were all dismissed Hady made her way over to the uniforms. There was more then enough of them she just needed the proper size. Silently shuffling through them she came across one that would work for her after just a few moments. Pulling it free from the others she draped it over her over. "Have a nice day Professor," she gave a nod of her head to him before leaving the meeting making a mental not to check for the Challenge that was posted on the way. No point in wasting time waiting if she didn't have to.[/COLOR]

First up was Lynch, and the young girl got an encouraging smile. "You as well, Miss Lynch. Best of luck in the tournament."

SPOILER!!: Zeke

Next up, naturally, was Browne. The kid was watched carefully, with a half-amused smile touching the corners of his lips. It didn't surprise him that he took a while longer than Hady in picking his uniform, or that he seemed caught in limbo after doing so.

Sabel was about to speak up and ask if there was something on the boy's mind, but no sooner did he make a move to do so than Zeke was bidding his farewells. The smile solidified. "See you around, Mr. Brown."

SPOILER!!: Adi

And then it was uniform time! The Hufflepuff bounded over grab one that was his size. It didn't take him long to find one. Adi looked over for Benny. Had he gotten his uniform and ready to go? It didn't matter. The Puffer would be waiting on him, anyway. But he turned to Dakest. "Thanks, Professor! See you around.'' Not leaving quite yet though because of bestie.

His attention turned to Rehman as the Hufflepuff came up. "My pleasure, Mr. Rehman. Take care, and good luck."

And here was one that looked less than enthused about the whole prospect. Interesting. Why was the kid here if there was such hesitancy in his steps? For a moment, Sabel watched the kid rifle through the garments and pick out his own.

When he had found what he was looking for, Sabel caught the boy's gaze. "Chin up Mr. Baines. Can't see what's coming at you if you're always looking down."

SPOILER!!: Daxton

It took Sabel a moment to recognize the bare feet in his classroom, given the number of feet that were milling about the uniforms. By the time he placed who they belonged to, they were already retreating out of the classroom at a record-breaking pace. A huff of air left Sabel.

He couldn't be bothered to bring it up now. The kid was out of earshot and caring range.

This kid....was going to end up in serious trouble one day. "I'll hold you to that promise, Mr. Hyland." As in, he now had a free pass to duel the kid at any time, without the allowance for him to decline.

And it just got even better as Hyland grabbed his garbs and issued the challenge to the whole class. Shaking his head, Sabel raised his voice to address the whole club. "An extra health point for anyone who defeats Mr. Hyland in a duel."

Not really, but it would be a good learning experience for the kid. Boastfulness did not equate to survival.

He wasn't entirely sure why Flamsteed had looked so uncomfortable throughout the meeting, but it seemed that whatever had him so unsettled had passed. The man got a nod of appreciation for his presence and ergo support. So far, the dueling club was going swimmingly.

Here was to hoping that the actual tournament proved a success.

But all thoughts of hand-holding disappeared when Professor Dakest mentioned that he wanted to see her after the meeting as well.

And then, there were these two.

Sabel didn't address them right away, waiting until the last student had filtered out of the hall before his gaze landed on the both of them. Had he made them sweat a little bit? Good. It was good practice.

"I'm glad to see you both here. As you can imagine, my expectations of you are excedingly high." No pressure, really, just a comment. Okay, so maybe a bit of pressure. Tucking his wand away, he gave them both a long minute of consideration. "While I cannot offer training the same as exists in the YATI program, consider this a trial run. Think well and hard, and put serious evaluation into this. If this, is what you want for your lives."

Returning his hands behind his back, Sabel levelled a heavy gaze at them both. "If it is, and if you prove yourselves adequate in skill, comprehension, logic and sensibility you may find yourselves each with a recommendation letter for the program."

It sickened him, in many respects, to even offer such a thing to children but it was part of his job. And who was he to say no? Unless there was proper reason of course. He had been in their shoes once before, knew what it felt like. He just hated the idea of condoning that decision in them.

Letting out a breath, he averted his gaze briefly. "And if either of you have questions about the program, or what happens after your graduation, come and ask me. If you have reservations or fears, my door is open. Do not leave this decision to whimsical fantasies. I can promise it is anything but."

Uniform in hand, Evie waited patiently for Professor Dakest to say goodbye to the others. She was curious, of course, but also patient... for once. She gave the professor a nod when he finally acknowledged them. She kind of already knew that he had been watching them and had high expectations, but him voicing it out loud brought a bit more pressure. Evie listened to every word he said, making sure she caught it all. But she couldn't help that notice that he seemed... reluctant. Was that the right word? Evie knew that being an auror was serious and that it wasn't fun and games. She had grown up quite a bit, even in the last year. But it was disconcerting to have a role model of sorts seem so dreary about his students' career choices.

Her lip twitched up into a small smile when he said that they may even receive a letter of recommendation. No pressure, right?

Evie nodded, knowing that she would come and ask him questions soon. She could have then, but she kind of wanted to ask him in private... "Yes sir," was all she said. Also, "Thank you for all your help." He was the best thing that could have happened to her in these last couple terms of her schooling. Shh, don't tell Benzi.

Well, at least they weren't jumping out of their shoes in excitement. That would have been serious cause for concern. If they could take this in stride, with the due amount of severity and respect for what they were getting themselves into, he would feel a lot better about recommending them to the task force.

Even then, the idea of putting such a thing to ink made him feel slightly nauseous. "Good. I'll see you both around then."

He didn't really want the thanks right now. Didn't feel like it was properly placed. But they didn't need to know that, and so a dismissal was best. Things would be what they would be.
