Charms used for duels... Hmm Benny was intrigued. Perhaps he'd learn a new thing or two for the dueling competition and his upcoming duels. Of course his competition would also be helped but he didn't mind that at all, especially since it made things more fair and even. Both sides knowing the same repertoire to work from in the long run. But a banner was being unrolled upfront and the GRyffindor's attention was back with it. Someone from Hogwarts in the past, he believed, thinking back to lessons and readings and such to try and figure out wh---Oh. A charms professor would likely use a charms professor in a lesson if one was needed. Adi's voice was heard after being called on, identifying the short man and confirming Benny's own thoughts. "He was influential in protecting Hogwarts during the Second Wizarding War," he added, after raising his own hand. |
Norah spread parchment on the floor in front of her cushion and titled it with a little flourish before looking up to see what Professor Baxter was showing them. Oooooh. A little old guy. She recognized him as an old charms professor but couldn't quite place his name. Or maybe he was a transfiguration professor? Some sort of professor, anyways. That was enough information to offer something to the conversation, even it was a little vague, so she put her hand in the air. "He was a professor at Hogwarts, so he accomplished loads of important things like teaching young wizards how to do...stuff." WHAT had he taught, though? She KNEW this. It was just living somewhere in her bran behind all the clouds of more exciting things. Like thoughts of chocolate frogs. She could use one of those right now, mmhmm. |
Ummmmm. Chloe had no idea who that was. She didn't want to say anything rude or disrespectful (she nearly asked if he was a goblin) but when she heard other people calling him a professor she decided to keep her mouth shut. What if she said something super wrong and everyone laughed at her? Or worse, what if she said something and offended people because she wasn't sure. She was just going to sit this one out and take down some notes. A curtain of blonde hair fell over her face and she began to jot down notes. |
Two points, now that was awesome because he did not expect getting them for doing the spell. So Professor got a smile there. Still he was just minding his own business not really caring about what was going on around him. When someone sat next to him (Chloe). Well look at that. It was someone he did not know and looked like first year. He just attracted first years. Didn't he. Dante stared at her seeing if she was going to say something. When she did not say a word. Dante just shrugged and turned his attention back to Professor Baxter. Dante had no idea who that guy with all the books was. Was he famous because he did something so amazing while looking like that. No idea. |
When Soph had gotten to class, she'd faced the ever-trying battle of trying to figure out WHO to sit next to. Someone she didn't really know, which was... actually kind of hard, as she tried her best to get to know EVERYONE at least a little bit. But she'd grabbed up a tag from the woman's desk, offered the professor a cheerful greeting, and sat down close to Paulina, the new Hufflepuff in her year she'd never gotten the opportunity to speak to. After she'd gotten settled with her class materials out, Soph sprawled The Tickling Charm out as her charm that was useful in a duel. What? It totally was. Soph would've crumbled in a duel if anyone ever used that on her, so she knew it was a powerful weapon. Laughter was a beautiful thing, but also a very uniquely disarming thing, too. Fantastic in that sense. At the picture of the banner in the air, Soph squinted. She knew quite a few wizards who looked like that, short and petite and inspirational enough to be mentioned. Rooney's comment about it being his Halloween costume made her smile, and the young Slytherin boy's question about it being the professor's grandfather made her smile broaden even further. But then when Adi, then Benny and Norah went along to confirm that it was Flitwick, a former professor and dueling champion during the Second Wizarding War, Soph gave a pensive hum. So that was the man who got to teach Hermione Granger? Wicked cool man, he was, then, and THAT also meant he was the one who did the... the charmed keys thing that she and Harry and Ron had to get by to get to rescue the philosopher's stone in their very first year? He had been the charms professor, yes? That was him, wasn't it? Super wicked. |
Maggie Angel smiled at the Professor. "I'm good Professor." Angel then gave the Slytherin girl a nice smile, she didn't really know this other student and she felt like she might as well get to know her. Angel then heard the question and now it was time to figure out who this guy was. "Professor, is it someone who was good at charms, and maybe taught a lot of people some cool charms." Angel had no idea if it was true or not because she couldn't figure out or work out who it was. |
Well at least the lesson had started off rather easily. Considering Brooklyn hardly spoke to most of the others in the classroom, finding a seat had been easy. Plus, it meant she could stay away from certain people. That and the mats had reminded her of Professor Romanos, so it was like going back to when she was little. She hadn’t spoken much once the discussion had started, more because she didn’t see a need to repeat answers. Of course that was Professor Flitwick. Just because she chose not to speak didn’t mean she didn’t know that. How anyone couldn’t know who that was escaped her, honestly. Therefore, she continued just idly toying with her tag, watching Professor Baxter from her position and trying to figure out what she was hiding. What dueling had to do with forts, and exactly what charms she knew she could cast successfully that might come in useful if they were going to be battling at some point. Since that seemed likely given the topic of the lesson, almost like capture the flag had been last term. |
She liked his flamingo quill?! She was the first one to say this and it made him smile. “thanks Professor! I bought it in scribbulus shop if you’re interested” Anyways, Yoongi placed the quill next to him on the ground and looked up when class officially started. As the banner rolled down out of thin air and revealed a picture of a short wizard, Yoongi gasped excitedly. He knew who that was. Kind of hard to miss since he had to spend years learning about this wizard in Charms School. His hand went up immediately after he heard the questions and he waved it around. “That’s Professor Filius Flitwick , Professor! And what DIDN’T he do?!” all those stories he had heard in his previous school, wow. “He was the Ravenclaw Head of House, Charms Professor while the famour Harry Potter went to school, a dueling champion AND he was one of the wizards who fought in the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998. He was also part goblin part wizard!” just fascinating! |
Blaise forced a very painful smile onto his face, fulling facing forward now when the Professor greeted him with her own. He might have told her it was all the same whether they worked at anything today or not, but he'd already told her way back in September that he didn't want to learn. He'd told a few people that as a matter of fact but they didn't seem to be listening. His smile turned into something of a grimace at the picture. He knew who it was but he didn't want to say he did. He didn't really want to say anything so he just kinda sat on his hands and stared. He was paying attention, to be sure, it was how he knew that Rooney kid dressed like THAT for Halloween and stuff and how he knew others in the class weren't answering either. His plan was simple. He would blend in with those who opted for silence, a very solemn look on his face. In his mind, he was counting down. 50 minutes 49...48....47 seconds to go. |
Janelle responded to the professor's greeting with a smile. "I'm fine Professor Baxter. I hope you are well." Then it was time for class to officially begin. And for the first question of the day, the class had a mystery to solve. Who was the man in the picture? Janelle knew that her was a former Hogwarts professor, but could not remember his name right away. She went over in her mind the things she did know about him. He taught Charms class waaay back in the Harry Potter Days. She knew that he was also the head of Ravenclaw House. Thinking maybe she could just give her little tidbit without revealing the professor's name, Janelle raised her hand. Unfortunately, she was a bit too slow. It seemed that many of her classmates not only knew the man's name, but knew a lot about him........including the fact that she had hoped to share. Filius Flitwick, that was his name. Now unable to think of anything that hadn't already been said, Janelle put her hand back down. She'd have to remain silent, unless she came up with something different to say. |
Dot kicked her heels lightly against the floor and studied that picture the professor had presented. It was a goblin, or a part goblin, right? Were part goblins a real thing, because it sounded impossible and a little disturbing? Kick. Kick. Kick. No time like the present to ask awkward questions. "Is he half-goblin? Does being half-goblin imbue you with any additional powers? Like being half-veela or half-giant makes you react to magic and stuff a little differently. You know?" |
Good weekend? GREAT weekend, but y'know... Zeke was still a little distracted by Maggie's presence BEHIND him, where he couldn't see her. Had she planned this form of torture? Or was it just him? Frowning a little to himself, Zeke observed the poster Professor Baxter showed them. ... Whoever that was, they looked short. VERY short. But no, he didn't know... and the name 'Filius Flitwick' meant nothing to him. Did Baxter know he was flunking HoM? |
Laughing, Gwen said, "that's professor Filius Flitwick!" Yeah, she had studied and studied and studied Hogwarts so intensively, but she didn't care if it made her look too smart. She was definitely a Huffleclaw. "His class was one of Harry Potter's favorites because he never cared if they talked, and he was so much fun! I would have loved to have him, honestly! Not that I don't love, you, obviously, Professor Baxter |
Daxton was starting to get suspicious with the amount of people - particularly teachers - who greeted him with a smile and said nothing whatsoever, nothing that would help him understand just why they were smiling. He did not trust them or their smiles. The Ravenclaw only stared in response to Baxter's smile, before looking out over the other students in the classroom until the lesson started. And apparently the lesson was taking more of a history direction than a charms direction, and though Daxton was okay with that, as he liked researching history and had an excellent memory for everything he read (whereas the practical side of magic had thrown up a lot of issues), he had not been prepared for a history lesson and also history did not belong in Charms class. This was all wrong. In any case, yes. That was obviously Filius Flitwick. Daxton had seen his picture in a book once, when he was reading up about the British wizarding war of the late twentieth century and the war that had preceded that one. An old Charms professor, sure, but the link was too tenuous. Daxton did not speak up, and instead stayed sat silent on his mat. |
How's she? "I'm good, Professor. Not really a fan of this cold weather but I'll survive." But Durmstrang weather was much colder than this so this was nothing. And not long after she took a seat, Professor Baxter started the class. Weekend? Her weekend was okay. Not good but its okay. The there's a banner rolled from nowhere. OH! She know that wizard! She raised her hand and waited till its her time to speak "Its Filius Flitwick, Professor." And to what great things he accomplished. "He'a a Master Duellist and he's famous for his knowledge in spells and charms." Well, the man did teach Charm in Hogwarts AGES ago. |
LOL That was the funniest looking wizard Zander Adair had ever set his eyes on. And no he didn't know who it was. But.... Was the bloke really that short or was it just the picture? Ahem. Clearly Zander Adair did not have anything insightful to add to the conversation so he just slunk down in his chair, trying not to think about that height deficiency going on there. Pretty sure those books were taller than the wizard himself. Just saying. Ahem. But not saying. Not saying because everyone else seemed to know who this guy was. Flitwick? More like fit-in-a-pocket-wick... No that wasn't clever. Yeah. He was just gonna. ... Anyways. |
Professor Baxter was so nice. Paulina would have answered, but since the lesson was starting, she settled on nodding. Yes, she DID have a good weekend. It had been rather productive since she had managed to get some studying in. It sounded like today's topic would come in handy for the Duelling Club and she needed all the help she could get, so Paulina was going to make sure to remember everything they were being taught. Glancing at the banner, she raised her hand. "I think that is Professor Flitwick. I think he was supposed to be really good at dueling." Would make sense since that was what the lesson was covering. And no, she couldn't remember what his first name had been. |
SPOILER!!: Rooney! Henric stifled his laughter from coming out of his mouth. Oh dear...this little bloke was really something, wasn't he? Yup, he was definitely going to like this one. What was his name again? Rooney? Goodness...the boy had his heart out for theater and drama in his later life. He gave the boy a thumbs up, good one...who knew the boy dressed up as Professor Flitwick for his Halloween costume! Of course, he knew who was the person in that picture. He was famous for participating in the wizarding war too. Yep, he did his reading alright. He raised his hand up to answer,"He was regarded as a person who had a sense of humour and always been fair towards his students." |
Hady's attention was drawn onto Professor Baxtor the moment the woman had began speaking. The fourth year took a glance towards the poster that was shown and nodded ever so slightly to herself. Yes she knew whom the person was. His name was Filius Flitwick and he was known for many things. All of which her fellow classmates were already saying around her. With the replies all being the same the Hady remained quiet yet attentive as she worked on taking down some notes that she probably didn't need but would have anyhow in case she ever did. |
Text Cut: Answers Text Cut: Filius Flitwick + Accomplishment-related answers "Correct, correct!" Astrid clapped her hands. They were all brilliant. Every single, creative little head in the room. "This is Fillius Flitwick," she said, with almost a dreamy sigh. Thank Merlin she was able to retain that, but the corners of her mouth did lift into a smile of an admirer. "As some of you mentioned, he was a Master Duellist, as well as a former Charms Professor whom achieved wondrous things during his time at Hogwarts." Pause. "Aside from his accomplishments, Fillius Flitwick is known for being one of the protectors of our castle during the Battle of Hogwarts. This is where we will focus on today." They've reviewed charms and practiced quite a bit already, but she was hoping - time permitting - they'd get to their activity soon. "We know that intent is required when casting a charm. In a classroom setting it can seem simple and sometimes even boring." The repetitiveness might. "Place yourself in Filius Flitwick's shoes for a moment - during the battle. There is a lot to take in. Your opponent, how skilled are they? How many are there? Are you protecting someone? Your surroundings." She let them concentrate for a little before continuing. "Would it be as simple to cast then? Even if it was a charm you knew from heart?" Did they work well under pressure or not? Her eyes roamed around the room, making eye-contact with the students. "Do not reply just yet, just think those questions over." She wanted them to think on that. It was not the same for everyone, and for now she wanted them to concentrate on what they would feel or do or react. Were they thinking on it? Good. "On that note, we will be using the charms we've studied in the past few weeks." With any luck they practiced them like she had advised. Behind her on the blackboard it was written: Quote:
OOC: We see the quiet students, too. <3 Also, we are going to pretend the students have gone over these charms the previous lessons like Astrid mentioned. The level of skill for your character is totally up to you. Have fun! (: Like last time, I will try and post at around this time tomorrow. |
Anyone Need A Partner? The girl with the green streaks in her hair was listening intently. Arms folded over her chest and eyes fixed ahead she took in all that was said, silently thinking over each question asked. How to duel and defend herself, others and things around her was why she had joined the duelling club. Intent and focus was good but working under pressure and fear could really change things up for someone. You always had to be prepared. Something could come up in the blink of an eye and change the course of everything. Hady nodded slowly to herself as she got looked at thone around her. She was open to working with someone. "Anyone wanna partner up?" Yeah she was asking today. Might as well. While she waited to see if anyone would take her up on the offer she went of the incantations and wand movements in her head. |
Norah Oliver's favorite sort of questions were the ones that didn't require an answer. Then, even if he didn't know the answer it wouldn't be too obvious. To be honest, he didn't know the answer most of the time. In this case, though, he actually would have been able to give a fairly competent answer. It wasn't like he really cared about not being able to give it though. The Battle of Hogwarts was an interesting topic. He definitely would not mind talking about that. And Olly even knew a few things about it. Not boring things, or a lot of specific names, but he understood the gist of it. He was excited to be talking about shield and disarming charms. Though he rarely did homework or assigned reading he did know about those things because they were pretty exciting. "Hey Norah, want to be partners?" |
Partner? Quote:

(Partner, anyone? *posting from phone and forgot to check posts before her*) So, Rooney was positive that Professor Baxter was not as bowled over by his answer as he had hoped she would be. The boy slunk into a slouch, pulling his knees up to his chest and resting his notebook on them. Maybe he should have just kept quiet and maybe he should have just skipped today. Maybe Charms wasn't the class that he would excel in. He was just going to have to think more about his answers before he said them in classes. The fact that they weren't supposed to answer the questions now baffled him and he tried his hardest to think about his answers properly, but couldn't when Professor Baxter moved them on soon after. Moving things on was problematic for him to THINK about his answers. REALLY. ............. pARTNER? Um. Hellloooooo? |
SPOILER!!: Olly "Well it says here that the disarming charm's incantation is 'expelliarmus' and the shield charm's one is 'protego,'" she began slowly, bringing the parchment closer to her nose in attempt to make out scribbly handwriting. The wand movement was....uh....what did that say? Maybe Oliver would know, even if he was still a firstie. After that genius niffler idea he'd had, Norah wouldn't be surprised if he were some sort of prodigy. They could move on to the deeper questions Professor Baxter had asked if he didn't know the wand movements either.[/color] |
