Before entering the classroom you'll see a sign next to the door in noticeable letters that reads:
Rules Before Entering Charms Classroom:
- Located inside next to the door is a yellow wall. Write something you appreciate about the school, your day, someone, ect. No names or inappropriateness, please. After posting on the Positive Wall take a sticker located at the heart of the wall, and wear it on your forehead for the duration of the class.
- Trade your house tie with someone else of a different house.
After that is done, the first thing you'll notice once fully walking inside is the cool and fresh breeze. The windows are open, letting in the cooling summer air and the soft morning glow. With a gleam in her hazel eyes, Professor Astrid Baxter stands at the front of the room leaning against her desk waiting for students to arrive.
Behind her there's yet another message, this one written on the blackboard:
Welcome, students! Take a seat next to a person you have not met and please properly fill out a nametag.

Hopefully hopefully HOPEFULLY no one will notice him that day because seriously, he didn’t want to switch TIES from another house...and on top of that, someone he didn’t know...or didn’t even bother to meet. Ethan was starting to have a bad day, and he was slooowly losing control of his temper.
Come on, really? Do they really have to trade? The seventh year was sure half, if not most students inside the classroom were sceptical about the idea. See? Even Head Boy Adair was being precocious which was not typical of a Gryffindor, if he may add.
Ethan was lost in his thoughts when a younger student almost shoved his tie in his face. Well at least, he was a Ravenclaw. Josie belonged to that house so it was cool...but, he wasn’t Josie so he still has reservations about handing over his tie to the unknown kid. Eyeing the boy's nametag, “It's a pleasure to meet you too...Moore.” Ethan said dryly, and got the Ravenclaws’ tie from his hand. " I'm Ethan Mordaunt. I s'pose we're partners now?" he asked as he raised the boy's blue tie.
The seventh year looked from the professor to the newcomer as he tried to come up with a plausible solution to this...trade thing. “You reckon we can get away with the trading of ties using the colour changing spell?” Ethan murmured to Austin as he tapped his finger against his desk. Quigley has taught them last term pretty well, and he was sure that everyone, except the first years, still remembers it.
"I honestly don't care what you do, just don't get my house points taken away, and please don't ruin my tie." The last thing he wanted right now was to have a ruined tie. His father had enough to worry about than go to Diagon Alley to get him a new one. And sure he had another tie in his trunk, but you can't wear one tie all year. Gross.
Austin leaned back in his chair wishing with all his might that they could all just leave. Yes, classes were important in becoming 'great and powerful witches and wizards'. But today was not his day, and all he wanted to do was go back to bed. "And I suppose we are... Mordaunt."
As the new professor introduced themselves, and now they had to write a paragraph? Where was the magic? The hands on? This new professor was not on Austin's good list today.
SPOILER!!: Parchment
Charms add certain properties to animals or objects. I don't really care what charm we learn just so long as we are learning stuff.
Austin knew the answer to the questions that the professor was asking, but to be honest, he was in such a sour mood that he wasn't going to answer any of them. He'd probably be really snide, and rude and that would just lose them house points. If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all, right?

Noelle had been chatting with Henric that she hadnt noticed class had started.
Sliding into a seat, with the Hufflepuff tie on, she grabbed her parchment and made herself a name tag.

She would have put more pizazz on it but she felt like she was running behind and didnt want that to be the first expression to the professor. She looked at the professor as they started. They needed to make a paragraph on what charms meant to them. Or at least, thats what Noelle had gathered.
Shrugging, Noelle didnt know much about charms. She knew the bare minimum. Taking out her self-inking quill, she started her paragraph,

There. Done. Now what?

"Oops, Sorry Professor." She grinned sheepishly. Sometimes when she was in panic, Ava could be very... reflective? Yeah, sometimes she could act spontaneously when in panic. But thank Merlin that it wasn't a test. The brunette just exhaled and listen to the Professor Baxter.
And moving on....
Some people did mention Aresto momentum to slow or stop a falling object. "Can we use that to save someone who's falling from the climbing, Professor?" She raised her hand and asked. Because if it could be, why her parents or big brother didn't use that to save her from falling from the tree a few years ago?

Janelle groaned inwardly when she found out that they would have to turn their paragraphs in at the end of class. Well what did she expect really? She guessed it was better than having to read their paragraphs out loud. She couldn't linger on those thoughts because it was question time.
What charm could be used to slow or stop a moving object. Ooooh ooooh. Janelle knew that one and her hand flew into the air. "Arresto momentum is the correct spell." Well apparantly everyone else in the class knew the answer too because they all chimed in with their thoughts. As for what the spell could be used for, Janelle had an answer for that too. "The spell could be used if someone fell off of the bridge or if they were falling from the ladder of the treehouse." Extreme examples, yes.......but they could happen. At Hogwarts, anything could happen and the better prepared you were, the better off you would be.

SPOILER!!: catching up
Even though he was running a little late to class today because he couldn't find where he'd put his STUPID house tie, David was still very much a rule follower. And even though he was in a hurry to get into the room before he was marked tardy, he paused outside to write: 'I appreciate how Hogwarts always feels like home,' on the wall, which felt very much like defiling his precious home, but the professor had allowed it and it was part of her rules so there ya go.
Next, he pushed his hair back from his forehead, wiped the small beads of sweat off there, and stuck a random sticker on. This one happened to be green with a bowtie and sunglasses or something, but he didn't really care. HE HAD TO GET INTO CLASS and... trade his house tie with someone??!
All that work trying to find the stupid thing and then he had to give it away. Well, Davie slid into the last available seat, having NO IDEA who he was sitting next to anyway, but he did undo his tie and set it off to the edge. He'd just write this nametag real fast and then do that...

Walking back to the front of the classroom and leaning against her desk, she tugged at the tip of blue and bronze tie that was around her neck. As a former Gryffindor she had clearly switched ties with someone. The students wouldn't know that. "First, I want to welcome new and returning students to Charms Class. I, myself, am new to teaching at Hogwarts, but not the castle itself." Flicking her wand at the blackboard her name was written in neat writing. "I am Professor Baxter and as you may have all guessed, I will be teaching you Charms." How exciting was that! "I would like to thank all of the students who followed directions and participated in the activity. It was nothing to be alarmed about." She smiled reassuringly and kindly at those she noticed flip about the rules and at those who did great and followed through. "A brief advice, if you'd like to earn full credit in my class read the rules and follow them appropriately." They were simple enough, yeah? They were early childhood level. She thought so, and she wanted them to all earn full credit. And now they couldn't say, 'but you didn't tell us thaaat!' because she just did.
With another smile, Astrid pushed off her desk and wandered toward the front desks, pausing. "To get this lesson started, I would like you to pull out a piece of parchment and write a paragraph on what you know about charms and what charms you would like to learn about. It's a way for me to get to know you." Because Merlin knew just how much office time she had (she would make as time as she could) but she was sure they had other lesson things that needed their attention as well. This was the best way to get to know them and to warm up their brains and get working. "You have ten minutes." And go!
Problem was, uh, they were starting already. Oh man. Davie really really needed to tidy up his dorm when he got out of class later. Maybe he'd be able to learn a new spell here in Charms for tidying? The boy scratched his head with his quill feather and then finished his nametag.

I'd also like to know the summoning spell, so that when I misplace something, I can just get it to come to me rather than having to turn over everything to try to find it. I've also heard Glisseo is a cool spell to know, and a tickling one, and anything that can be used in Defense Against the Dark Arts would be helpful. I just want to know all the spells the older kids already know. I am very interested in learning anything, professor, and I will apply myself outside of class to practice if necessary!
So much writing. Luckily, he didn't mind bookish tasts like reading and writing. He loved them, actually. BUT HERE THEY WERE, moving on again already. Geez. Davie needed to get smarter faster, like his classmate Kate.

Astrid was also confident the question would be answered in a timely manner so first years, or anyone who didn't know this charm, could answer the next question. "How can we use such charm in extreme situations, as well as in our daily lives?"
Uh yeah, see, he didn't know this one. But once the older students started chiming in with Arresto Momentum, Davie got an idea of the spell and instantly he thought of its famous use during one of Harry Potter's quidditch matches. Heh, good on whoever had brought that up. He remained quiet for a minute, lightly tapping his cheek with his quill as he tried to think of an instance in which one might use that spell in their daily life...
"If you were carrying all your groceries in one trip, but you fell or started to drop a bag, you could quickly cast the spell to keep your eggs from breaking or your fruit from bruising..." he volunteered quietly.
That was a specific example, sure, but how else could the spell be used? Davie had a follow-up question. "Could you use arresto momentum ON a different spell, professor? Or does it just have to be used on objects? Like if you were dueling someone, and you cast that spell on them... would it cause whatever spell they had sent toward you to slow down? Would it slow the other person down entirely, so they couldn't shoot a bunch of jinxes at you at once, or???"

Adi happily re-read his written thingy, correcting any incorrect spelling or grammar. He didn't want the new professor to think that he lacked proper writing skills. When he was done, he drummed his fingers on the desk, waiting for the allotted time to be up. And soon it was! He set the parchment on the corner of his desk to pull his book towards him to start making notes.
So... a spell that slowed things down or stop a falling thing. There was only one spell he knew that could do that. Adi raised a hand. ''Arresto Momentum, I think, Professor. The wand movement is just waving the wand.'' He opted not to answer the next question because some of the younger ones were giving pretty great answers already. Besides, why would he hog all the questions?
Damien HAD turned out to be awfully nice, which was a huge relief. There had been nothing even SLIGHTLY fishy about him after all, and Sophie Brown decided then and there that Damien was a good guy. Definitely good. She approved.
When the professor went along to ask some questions about what was obviously the charm Arresto Momentum, Sophie let herself get distracted by Zander's good looks as the first few of her classmates chimed in with the basics on the spell. She sincerely hoped that wasn't what this whole class was going to be about, as Piers had taught this charm to her and the other seventh years who had been at school all seven years during their very first term, so maybe it was a segue into a similar charm? If not, it was going to be an easy enough class-- but Merlin, the Head Boy's hair was looking extra beautiful today, wasn't it? She wanted to ruffle it. It was probably a good thing he was so far away. His answer about cookies made her smile, though, and she shook her head in good humor. Such a nerd, Zander Adair.
With the basics of the spell covered, Soph went ahead to extend her arm into the air, and offered up her examples, too. "Arresto Momentum can be used... well, I've seen my mum use it against Bouncing Bulbs before to slow 'em down, so unruly plants in herbology can count as one use... 'n Professor Culloden taught us to use it to stop the flow of a potion, like, if it's exploding all over or something, or if it's spilling all over." Practical uses in their every day lives.
Rory looked down at his red tie, it felt wrong wearing it, even though it was only a tie. He was so used to his sleek blue one, wearing a red one made him feel unease. Probably as the class proceeds he will completely forget about it, until his blue one will be given back, and he will return the Gryffindor tie.
SPOILER!!: Catching up!!!!
He looked at Professor Baxter, not knowing what his exact opinion about her was, but her first task was rather simple. He has has memorised most of his Charms books so defining a Charm wasn't complicated, but he had many Charms he would like to accomplish.
Quote:
A Charm, is a spell that adds certain features to an object, but does not change the object itself. A Charm is "built" out of an incantation and an accurate wand-movement.
And, personally any new Charm will do, each Charm is worth learning as long as its's useful.
He looked down at his parchment, and re-read what he had written. A bit dull, his words were as if taken from a textbook. But, as long as it was correct, he didn't mind.
He looked up to Professor Baxter. Giving in the parchments?! Ughhh... she'll probably think he's a walking textbook. Maybe he should change what he had written? No. That would be dumb. But, it didn't matter anymore because the class continued. He'll forget about the parchment just as he forgotten about the red tie. And all will be well.
"Arresto Momentum," he thought to himself that was the answer. He never conjured the spell, but he obviously read about it. He raised his thin arm, barely above his head, and answered, "W-With a wave of the w-wand, Arresto Momentum, is useful upon any falling object I s-suppose." His voice was cracking... Great. He wasn't the sort of student to answer questions, he usually preferred listening, taking notes and staying silence. Somehow, he wanted to answer the first question. Maybe it was the tie?! Maybe this Gryffindor tie has brought him courage and confidence?! Probably not... it was a foolish and infantile idea. Stupid.
Rory wondered for a moment, could he use a simple levitating charm with great aim of course upon a falling object? The charm itself was easier, so why not? And what if he used Arresto Momentum, upon an object that was descending willingly, such as Hippogriff after a long fly? Hmmm... should he ask these questions? No... he would go straight to library after the lesson, as expected. But a curious look appeared upon his face.

There wasn't much to be said just yet. Sure a question was asked and Hady most certainly knew the answer to it. However she kept quiet finding no sense in just repeating exactly what everyone else in the class had already said.
Shifting slightly in her seat Hady brushed a bit of hair from her eyes. Not taking could be done for the time being. Sitting up a little more in her seat she took her quill and began to take down neatly labeled notes while she waited for the next part of the lesson. All the time wondering if this was the charm they'd be working on, what was it they'd be stopping or slowing down?

Owen was nodding and beaming at the Professor while she talked about the purpose of exchanging house ties. He kind of figured that out. It was a brilliant idea, if you asked him. He wouldn't get to interact with Ava if it weren't for that and Owen really wanted to interact with mooooooooooooooore people.
The Professor was asking a question...which made Owen's grin fall a bit. A charm that could slow or stop a falling object? He...had no idea. So the young badger stayed silent and listened to what her peers knew about the charm in question.
It didn't last long though, because he got an answer for the next question. Owen raised his hand and said, "For the extreme situations scenario, I think it can be used to prevent a falling chandelier from splatting a crowd of people under, Professor maa'm! And for every day use..." Hmm. Where and when could he be possibly use that kind of charm? ...Oh! "I think it would be helpful for people who are especially careless and clumsy. You know, because they tend to cause things to fall accidentally...like their hand mirror, or a bowl of cereal."Nod nod.
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
Blaise had gotten through his paragraph in very little time at all which meant he was all ears when the Professor explained that temporarily giving away his Gryffindor identity was a way to get to know each other. It was true he supposed, cause right now he knew he didn't like the Hufflepuff he'd just given his tie to and he also now knew that most of his classmates were willing to wear different house colours. In that way he supposed her mission was accomplished?
In the background his quill still scribbled on the notepad that floated next to him but as suggested, his actual notes were being taken with a regular, old fashion one.
If possible, his face might have sunk more when he realize they would be learning the opposite of the charm he was most interested in. This was simply not his lesson, was it? Naturally he didn't know the answer either but by now enough of his classmates had said it for him to get the right idea and so he scribbled down 'Arresto Momentum' as they had said but he didn't think she needed a million and one people saying the same thing so he would go with it's use--what little there was that he could see.
"If there's only one cookie left and both you AND your little sister want it, you can make her slow then run ahead to snatch it." Not something Julie would appreciate but she would do the same if given half the chance he was sure.

Angel listened to everything that the Professor had said and then she smiled as she raised up her hand. "The spell is Arresto Momentum!" Angel also had such a girly answer to the question. "Professor when you and your mates are having a water fight and one is hurled straight at your face, you can slow it down and get out of the way before it ruins your hair." Angel thought it was an important thing to do that.
Henric listened to his classmates answers and nodded agreeably. Yup...the spell was definitely Arresto Momentum. It was a charm to slow the movement of an object or a living thing from descending too fast. With a wave of a wand, the caster be able to do the spell effectively. Were they going to learn the spell today?
He raised his hands,"Arresto Momentum can be used for example, to stop any major accidents happen either by a falling tree branch or ceiling during an earthquake or something....and for everyday usage, we probably use it to maintain boiling water from overflowing the pot when we cook if we're not looking. Come o... who doesn't multitask these days... "
Candice listened to the Professor when she explained why she made them exchanged house ties. Well, that kinda make sense.
Then she asked them a question about a charm that could be used to slow down a falling object. She raised her hand before answering the question "If a building collapse from an earthquake or construction failure, we can use it to stop or slow down the debris so people have extra time to run." Her brother was a Wizarchitect, so she's familiar with building and stuffs like that.

Sabbath looked down at his tie, he hadn't yet managed to swap it with anyone. He mused that if he'd known the charm required, it would have been much more savvy to just change its colour. Just then the professor had asked another question

Sabbath could certainly see how a charm like this could be very useful, especially if one had dark enemies. Sabbath looked thoughful and raised his hand "Professor, can I ask a question? Yep. Totally ignoring that KID, because obviously, he wasn’t worthy of his attention whatsoever, even if he’s a Ravenclaw. Ethan closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose as this Moore fellow continued to talk with a snarky tone. He thought he asked the fellow beside him nicely about the colour changing charm, but what he got was a response full of attitude. From a YOUNGER student nonetheless.
If he were so smart, he would’ve realized that he’s got his tie in his hands. He should be careful with the next words that will come out of his mouth if he wants his precious tie back safe and unharmed. Also, points? His points? Did he look like he cared? Nope, Ethan doesn’t, so blah blah blah Austin Moore, you can shut up now, thank you very much.

Naturally Astrid wasn't used to silence, not even the soft sound of quills writing on parchment being the only sound in the background. It was too quiet. But this was a one time thing. How was she to get to know them ALL at least just a little bit? This was a way to get the ball rolling.
Someone sounded in distress. Her eyes scanned the room, landing on the young lioness. Oh? There was a test? "Do not fret, this is not a test. It's just a simple activity. Remember to raise your hand," she said, smiling a small kind smile. No need to interrupt her classmates while they were obviously concentrating.
A great example of raising hands right there. It was a great question, too. She was sure they were all wondering why the funny rules. Why not? "Excellent question, thanks for bringing it up." Brave one, that one. "What is your guess as to why that is a rule, the tie exchange?" She lifted her tie, and grinned a little. "As you can see I have a Ravenclaw tie, and seeing as I am a former Gryffindor it means I have traded as well." And you didn't see her sulking about it. Really, what was wrong with that? It was just an activity, not the end of the world. "It's a great way to interact with your peers, new or familiar, on the first day of class." Would they rather do the old 'stand up and present yourself?' No. That was overly used and boring. Maybe these kids liked boring.
Now. It was time for them to concentrate. They had a few minutes left.
When the ten minutes were over, Astrid waited a bit longer as quills still moved across parchments. After that little moment was done, she returned to her post in front of the desk. "Excellent! You'll be turning those in after the lesson is over." She was quite excited to read them all.
"Moving on, we will begin the term with a charm that is designed to slow or stop a falling object." Her eyes roamed around the classroom, making eye contact, confident the older students knew what charm she was referring to. "What is this specific charm, what do you know about it?" She glanced around, meeting the gaze of a few young ones. Astrid was also confident the question would be answered in a timely manner so first years, or anyone who didn't know this charm, could answer the next question. Moving on. Ethan got his notebook this time, and readied himself to take down notes. As the discussion went on, the new professor had asked about a certain charm…or spell about stopping or slowing down an object from falling. Well, it was a very basic question AND spell, wasn’t it? Even before the answer was given, Ethan already wrote down the words, ‘Arresto Momentum’ on his notebook. Also, there was no point in repeating what the others have already said regarding the spell.

So the tie swapping thing was to get to know other houses? Nice touch, shame no one wanted his gryffindor tie.... it wasn't dirty you know. He even uses ironing charms on his clothes to keep them smooth.
He sighed as he looked at the tie on his desk and then turned his attention to the Professor when she asked the next question. He raised his hand in the air "Arresto Momentum, Professor. It can be used when you fall off the cart in the gringotts caves" ....what? ..it could right? have they all seen how HIGH UP those tracks were? What if a cart suddenly..flipped or something? Chuckling at Hady's reply, Paulina was about to further comment when the Professor told them it was time to move on. Alrighty. After ushing her paragraph off to the side, she got out her notebook so that she could take notes.
By the time she had everything sorted, people were answering the first questions. Not wanting to sound redundant, Paulina settled on writing down what she heard her classmates had to say.

SPOILER!!: Yaya (before class)
Victoria was sitting down, and a bit distracted looking around for someone to trade her tie with until a girl approached her and suggested the trade. With a nod, and she hoped that was a smile, the movement her lips made, she took the girl's red tie and gave her the blue one. "My name is Victoria, yours?" She at least had to know the name before the lesson started. "And here is your seat..." She said, taking her bookbag off the chair next to her.
Tie trade in progress. Phew. So far that had been the most difficult task, but AJ could very well be on the way to making a new friend and that was always so much fun. She took the blue tie as she handed over her red one. Once it was on her nicely, she smiled at the girl. "Sup Victoria, I'm AJ."
If possible, her smile widened a bit, and she took a seat next to the Ravenclaw. Blue really was a pretty color she thought, as she looked down at her new tie. Before she could carry on much more of a conversation the professor began to speak.
A whole paragraph?
Didn't she know that hand cramps were no laughing matter? Internally she groaned as she pulled out a spare piece of parchment. She bit her bottom lip as she tried to think about what to write. Ah. She had something. Let the scribbling begin.
SPOILER!!: parchment
I know that some charms are easy and some take lots of practice. I kind of like the challenging ones because once I finally get it down I feel like I have really accomplished something. I think the best description of charms is enhancing an object/person/creature. You can make a boring old light flash multi colored lights. I want to learn about the Fidelius charm because being able to hide someone and there is NO WAY to find them unless the secret keeper blabs is pretty interesting. I bet that spell is really hard. How would you know you did it right?
The first question asked was pretty easy, and everybody had pretty much covered it. Was there anything left to add? She really didn't think so, so she nodded her head in approval and made mental notes. No more actual notes for the time being. You know... had to give her hand a chance to recover from that brutal paragraph.

Uh. How did everyone know everything?
Phillip was lost. LOST. SURE, he came from a magical family and all but he wasn't TAUGHT magic. Or he simply didn't pay attention as much as he should have, something he was starting to regret now. Maybe if he'd spent less time climbing trees and pulling pranks and more time listening to whatever it was his mum and Johnny had been telling him, he wouldn't be in this mess.
Shrug.
He was going to ignore the question about what the spell WAS since people had answered it already and try to concentrate on the next bit: how it can be used in everyday circumstances. To save people's lives? Yeah. To stop something expensive from dropping on the floor and saving yourself from being shouted at by your mum? Yeah.
Oh! OH HEY! His hand went UP in the air and he started waving it around a little. HEY PROFESSOR LADY? "If you're trying to sneak around someone's room and you don't want them to know, you can use that spell if you ACCIDENTALLY knock something over. Something that would make a lot of noise and give away your cover." Not that he did things like that. Sneak around people's rooms.
Also, she had to sit beside someone she didn't currently know, which wasn't going to be too difficult since there were still so many she had yet to meet. YES, IT WAS DISPAIRING, but she still had time! For this lesson, however, Reagan was choosing an unknown Slytherin boy [Dante]. Gliding towards the seat next to his, she made herself comfortable. "Hello." New friend? New friend.
...and she had some WRITING to do...
...and a paragraph...
Finishing with an exaggerated flourish, she beamed at the professor...and then towards the Slytherin she'd claimed. "...I'm Reagan, by the way."
Dante was just minding his own business and just writing his paragraph that he did not really want to. Then he heard Hello directed to him. Well this was new. It was an older girl. Someone he did not remeber seeing at all before. So maybe transfer or just never seen before in the Castle. Shrug. Whatever. Guess he was no sitting next to someone he did not know though. So yeah.
"Hey"
Then he finished his paragraph and heard her talking to him again.
"I'm Dante"

Well that was an easy answer so it came as no surprise everyone was answering. So Dante did not have to. He liked it better that way. If he was in the mood to answer. He would have probably said something like it was the perfect spell for a buddy to use if you were jumping off a jump on a bike and saw you were going to fail. They could use Arresto Momentum to stop you from injuring yourself.
But yeah he was good with being quiet for now.
The cookie answer was brilliant though.

Milo listened as the Professor started the lesson and was interested to find out that it was her first term teaching at Hogwarts. How cool, he was in her first batch of students and she was one of his first Professors.
But the first assignment was being assigned. They needed to write a paragraph talking about what they knew about Charms and what they wanted to learn. Easy enough.
Quote:
Milo's Pargraph
Charms are spells created and used to help animate, move, or manipulate items in order to help witches and wizards. There are an uncountable number of charms in the world but there are some that most know that include cleaning and summoning spells. Spells like aguamenti, incendio, and scorgify are all ones that my mother has helped me work on to prepare me for Potions class this first term at Hogwarts. There are some charms that I would like to learn though. How to levitate objects or to summon things would be pretty neat. I am very eager to learn whatever it is that's thrown my way this year though.

"Moving on, we will begin the term with a charm that is designed to slow or stop a falling object." Once he had finished his paragraph about what he knew and wanted to learn about Charms, Milo pushed it to the corner of his desk since they would be taken up at the end of the lesson. The topic of the class had just been revealed though and it sounded like a good one. Not really levitating objects like he wanted but it was close!
After listening to the questions and thinking for a minute, he raised his hand. "Professor, I don't remember the incantation for the spell really but the last part of your question reminded me of an extreme situation to use the spell. My aunt and uncle were over at me and my mom's house and one of my baby cousins had somehow gotten on top of the kitchen counter after some Honeyduke's fudge that we had gotten for Christmas from my Gran. I hadn't eaten it because it had almonds in it and I don't really like almonds--but that's beside the point. Umm, well he fell off the counter but thankfully my mom had just come in to the kitchen with a bunch of dishes levitating in front of her and she used the spell to catch him."
Kate took a few mental notes on the professor. She was pretty straightforward and didn't like to joke around. Okay. Kate could handle that. Also, she'd participated in the activity...or tried to, at least. Brooklyn still hadn't taken her up on her offer to swap ties.
Kate frowned to herself as she took a seat. Class had only just gotten started, and they were already writing paragraphs! Kate didn't like writing that much, but at least it was an easy topic. She took out her quill and a piece of parchment and began to write.
Kate Addison
3rd year Ravenclaw
A charm is cast to make changes to things that already exist. There's something we want the object to do that it doesn't already do. We can also change objects to look differently than they did before. Charms are different than transfiguration spells. Transfiguration spells change an object into something else entirely. A charm, like I said before, doesn't change the object into something else, it just changes the objects behaves or looks. I think I'd like to know more about color-changing charms, specifically the Flashing Paint Charm! I think it'd be fun to make things with flashing paint!
WHOA.
This professor moved quickly! Either that, or Kate needed to speed things up. She had literally JUST finished the last word of her paragraph, when the professor started moving on to something else. Kate put her quill away and put on her thinking cap instead.
Now, which charm was this? She raised her hand. "Arresto Momentum," she said, "and I know that once, Harry Potter was knocked off his broom by a team of dementors, and one of the professors used Arresto Momentum to basically save Harry's life." That must have been pretty terrifying...and maybe that as one of the reasons the school didn't have Quidditch anymore. Kate had never actually thought to ask.
"Such extreme circumstances Harry Potter went through, but yes, you're correct." Astrid nodded at the Ravenclaw.

"That's Arresto Momentum, she said. "I think it can be used in Quidditch, in case someone falls off their broom. It was almost an embarrassment that Astrid knew hardly anything about the sport considering her family was invested in it, but what the student said made sense. "That would be a great way to use the charm," she agreed. "Lots of injuries would be avoided."

Too bad nobody had taught her this spell before she'd fallen out of that tree, or that time she knocked her mum's favorite vase off the bookshelf when she and Marcel were playing pirates, but she hadn't exactly confessed to that one yet.

Charms are most powerful and game-changing spells. There are some charms like the memory charm that can completely remove a person's memory. There are also what is considered dark charms like curses and hexes. Some dark charms are the unforgivable curses. You need precise hand movements for the charm to work or else some complications can happen. There are some charms that can help you in school like the anti cheating spells. It is all how you use the charm that can make it good or evil.
Woah the ten minutes are up because he heard the Professor move on. Man that was fast. He was gonna turn it in after the lesson was over so technically he still had time. He heard her explaining a charm he knew that is designed to slow or stop a falling object. He spoke out at once saying, "Arresto Momentum." What did he know about it? Well like the others have said it can be used to save someone's life but he had another idea. "We know it can help stop objects that are in motion and one example is if a quaffle is pelting right toward your right, you can stop it from getting a concusion." That seemed pretty legit to him.
"Stop a quaffle from giving you a concussion, yes!" And ouch.

Tough question. She wasn't a fan of using her wand and magic, yet. But she was hoping to get in the habit of it. That's why she was a witch! Looking down at her piece of parchment, and her inked pen, sighed and began to write.
As she finished writing, a question popped out, about a charm used to stop or fall in...slow motion. Hmm. It involved a word, she had heard before. EH. Emmm...Momen...Raising her hand, and hoping it was the right answer, "Arresto, to hold, Momentum, movement...yes, Arresto Momentum. Can be used to save a glass from breaking." Nodding, she gulped.
"Thank you for putting it that way. Arresto to hold, Momentum as movement." Brilliant child!

There. Potential crisis averted.
...and yes, Arresto Momentum! Reagan had hoped they'd be focusing on something more conducive to her personal interests and area of study. You know, helpful to animals and plants, but she supposed if that were the case, they'd be taught in a joint lesson with Herbology or Care of Magical Creatures. Or...well...maybe there were some practical applications...
Raising her hand in a confident manner, Rea continued to beam at Professor Baxter. She seemed like such a nice lady. Oh, and with baby birds, too. They wouldn't have to fly or die..."
Ugh. The vicious cycle that was life. Her heart just broke for them.
Also, it wasn't the least bit alarming...to HER, that her first fear was for the animals. People fell all the time and survived...

Problem was, uh, they were starting already. Oh man. Davie really really needed to tidy up his dorm when he got out of class later. Maybe he'd be able to learn a new spell here in Charms for tidying? The boy scratched his head with his quill feather and then finished his nametag.
Now to move along to the paragraph about Charms... it was nice of the professor to take their interests into consideration. Davie had LOTS of interests.
So much writing. Luckily, he didn't mind bookish tasts like reading and writing. He loved them, actually. BUT HERE THEY WERE, moving on again already. Geez. Davie needed to get smarter faster, like his classmate Kate.
Save the eggs, of course. The child had a question, though. Astrid listened and nodded in understanding. "The charm is designed to slow or stop the momentum of an object. Trusting Arresto Momentum to slow down a spell can be a risk that can cost you a duel." A risk that even her daring self wouldn't try. She liked to win. "The charm can be used to slow down the other person." Astrid shot him a quick smile. A handy charm to keep in mind.

Astrid smiled, nodding because, yes! It could be used in other subjects as well. "It is useful in other magical areas, brilliant!"

SPOILER!!: Catching up!!!!
He looked at Professor Baxter, not knowing what his exact opinion about her was, but her first task was rather simple. He has has memorised most of his Charms books so defining a Charm wasn't complicated, but he had many Charms he would like to accomplish.
"A wave of a wand is necessary, thank you." It made her glad they didn't forget about wand movements.

You know, because they tend to cause things to fall accidentally...like their hand mirror, or a bowl of cereal."Nod nod.
Falling chandelier? Why would a chandelier fall? That was dangerous. Where were the elves? This was an excellent extreme scenario. Astrid nodded. "That would be awful, but you are right. It can prevent a falling chandelier from hurting others. As well as helping the less coordinated." Ahem, ahem.

"Get to the last cookie!" Astrid agreed with this so much. Being the only girl in her family, it was usually her who would lose until she was able to outsmart her brothers.

"Professor when you and your mates are having a water fight and one is hurled straight at your face, you can slow it down and get out of the way before it ruins your hair." Angel thought it was an important thing to do that.
"It can certainly help you keep your hair dry." What a fun scenario.

"Great examples. It can help from a falling tree to an earthquake to maintaining boiling water from overflowing. Thanks for sharing." She liked those examples.

She raised her hand before answering the question "If a building collapse from an earthquake or construction failure, we can use it to stop or slow down the debris so people have extra time to run." Her brother was a Wizarchitect, so she's familiar with building and stuffs like that.
"And in doing so a lot of lives can be spared, correct!" Her students were so caring.

I appreciate the door of opportunity that has opened, I intend to walk through it.
His name tag read:
Sabbath took out a fresh sheet of parchment to address the professors first question
Text Cut: parchment
Professor, I am but a blank slate lying before you. I know little of charms but I ask that you teach me the good and teach me the bad, I am thirsty for all the knowledge that you can bestow upon me
Sabbath looked down at his tie, he hadn't yet managed to swap it with anyone.
Does the moving object have to be falling downwards, or can it also be stopped from moving sideways - lets say, just hypothetically, if someone were to throw a knife a person"
Oh my. What a question. "It doesn't have to be specifically falling, the charm will slow or stop the movement of an object." Pause. "Fortunately we only deal with wands and magic at Hogwarts," she added. So no need to worry.

"Or you can use it as a game, like dropping two stones from a tower and then cast the spell and the stone that lands last wins"
So it was a lifesaver game and a fun game.
Fall off the cart at Gringotts? Oh Merlin. Astrid kept her amusement at that thought to herself. "It would make for a painful fall." Nod, nod. "It can also be used for games, clever!"

Cue an overly fake innocent smile.
Sneaking into rooms. Hmm, hmm, hmm. "Yes, that is another possibility. Wouldn't want to be caught, eh?" That little Snake.

Once he had finished his paragraph about what he knew and wanted to learn about Charms, Milo pushed it to the corner of his desk since they would be taken up at the end of the lesson.
A bit off topic at first but he got there.
He didn't like almonds? She loves almonds...unfortunately she's allergic to them. "That is an extreme situation." Scary too. "I'm glad your mum was there to catch him on time."
"Wonderful!" Her students were a clever bunch. With a wave of her wand the name of the charm, wand movement and effect was written. "Today we will be studying two charms which will play out for our activity in just a few moments." She had a feeling there were going to be more frowny faces, but that was okay. It was the beginning of the term, the lessons were only going to grow more challenging.
"The next charm we'll be looking at is the Banishing Charm." Her gaze roamed around the room as the spell was written by an invisible entity behind her. "I'm sure you're all tired of sitting down so I will go over it and then we can jump into the next step." Eyes to you quiet ones. "The Banishing Charm does exactly what the name says; it banishes things, sends them away." Clear? Clear. "While Arresto Momentum is the incantation for its spell, the Banishing Charm has its own. Depulso." She paused as it was written on the board. "Everyone repeat after me, de-puhl-so."
Astrid waited for them to do so, and after they did she continued. "It's wand movement is a simple sweep of your wand." She demonstrated, casting the charm silently and sweeping her wand at the quill on her desk, sending it away to her office.

"Listen clearly now, we don't have much class time, so we will take a moment to practice." And then fun! "First through third years will practice Arresto Momentum. Fourth and fifth years will practice the Banishing Charm, sixth and seventh years will as well, but non-verbally." Not a peep from them. "You will only be practicing, not casting, yet. Once you feel confident, please stand up, push in your chair and wait for further instructions." And GO.
OOC: I apologize for rushing the last bit. School starts tomorrow so I'll have a busy week, and I would also like to give you guys enough time for next activity. You only require one post to practice both incantation and wand movement. Thanks!
"Fourth and fifth years will practice the Banishing Charm" It was what Professor Baxter instructed them to do. Okay then..."De-pull-soooo," Henric repeated the incantation.Did he say it right? It sounded weird in his ears. Again."De-paal-so." He blinked. Nope, that was definitely not it.He stared at the board again to make sure he was pronouncing it correctly. Depulso... ohhh...so this spell was like a reverse spell of the Summoning charm? Cool. Henric used his hand to practice sweeping with his wand before standing up from his seat, pushing his chair in as he did. The banishing charm spell seemed easy enough, it wouldn't be too hard, he thought.
"Depulso...Depulso...Depulso..." He non-verbally chanted the spell numerous times in his head without moving his wand. Yup...he was ready. He couldn't wait to practice this charm on something!
