| | |  Astronomy Lesson 1 :: Cosmic Collisions - Craters
The crisp September evening air may be just the ticket to helping you stay awake this time of evening on your first day of lessons. Or just make you want to bundle up under the covers back in your dormitory. We won’t tell you how to feel.
Stepping into the Astronomy classroom, you may be a little perplexed to find any desks or chairs in the classroom and instead are greeted with what looks like a giant sandbox with glistening white sand. After another moment or two, you are swept off your feet by some unseen force that causing you to float up into the air - although you will need to do a little bit of air swimming to reach your seat. The initial feeling is similar to that of going down the first big dip in a roller coaster, but certainly not enough to make anyone nauseous enough for a little dinner show-and tell. Looking up, you see that the large semicircle of desks and chairs are all suspended in midair some 15 feet or so above the ground, rocking ever so slightly up and down thanks to the enchantments placed upon them. The blackboard, positioned across from the semicircle of desks, has the following instructions written upon it:

Take out a quill and write your FULL name and year on the piece of parchment provided.
Once you have done so, give it a tap with your wand.
The parchment, enchanted by the professor himself, will turn into a sturdy wood name plaque when you do so. Don’t worry, it won’t go floating away from you but rather stick firmly to your desk.
Did you remember to use the lint roller on the small table outside of the classroom? It was there next to the sign that reads, "Not to be used as a brush for your hair" and has the signature of a former student in the bottom right corner. Also next to the sign is a small box containing an assortment of pips that you are meant to take and wear proudly on your robes for the duration of the lesson
Professor Flamsteed is floating somewhere near the blackboard looking especially pleased with himself this evening. Surely that cannot be a good thing?

Angel decided that she might as well aim for the same planet, since she had already hit it once, she was still thinking about the last marble and how it had blown into a million pieces which just wasn't right or nice and she seriously wanted to try and rebuild it.
Angel grabbed another marble and she used her wand again. "Tikalas!" Angel loved this spell and she was hoping that she could do this spell with other things like with a water balloon or something like that.
Angel released the marble and watched as it exploded on planet 1, she was actually starting to enjoy the game a bit not much but she thought she might be able to get through her marbles, well she hoped that she could anyway because after that she was going straight to bed and to sleep.

This was so cool! All so cool, Owen was beside himself with all that happening around. The sound that the marbles made upon shattering and hitting the sand was simply magical. This was the very first magical activity that Owen got to participate in and saying that he was enjoying it very much was an understatement.
Oh, look! There went Adi! Owen beamed at his Prefect and decided to aim at the same planet he was firing at. Because teamwork.
Taking out another marble, the young badger readied his wand, "Tika... Incoming person someone!!! Eeek! Owen had to float out of the way, in result lost his momentum...but it was easily recovered as he paddled to another position wherein he could shoot the marble easily. And then, "Tikalas!"
The marble was off...speeding towards the planet...and another hit! Yo, crater!
Woohooo!

Y'know, Davie could hardly see the blue craters he was making for all the red and green ones covering the planets. Maybe he could float closer to the sand-planets. Inching himself along in the air like a worm, Davie mumbled "'scuse me," to anyone he nudged, even as he started to turn upside down in his floating. He got another marble out, almost dropped it, caught it again, and quickly mumbled the spell.
"Tikalas!" Pulling back the marble, back a little further, tighter still, and.... wheee! He let it fly toward what he thought was planet one. BRACE FOR IMPACT, Slytherdor planets!

Adi was having the time of his Hufflepuff life! And yes, he did happen to see Ava hitting Flamsteed though he couldn't decide if it were on purpose or not since he knew about the little Burton girl and her love for pranks. The situation did get a laugh from him though namely because of the Admiral's reaction. He he he. Flamsteed was soooooo comical!
But then the were was the Big guy helping Adi out! He grinned as he hovered lazily about. YEAH TO HUFFLEPUFF TEAM WORK!!! "Great job, Owen!" He also got a thumbs up. Owen was one of the most promising Hufflepuff firsties, you know. Maybe even one from the entire bunch of ickles.
"Let's take this planet!" The over happy seventh year aimed his wand and marble at said planet. "Tikalas!" Yet again, the steps were repeated so that the third planet now had an additional yellow stain. WOOT!

But he had little time to contemplate future activities as a few more marbles went sailing towards planet number one and...OH LOOK AT THAT!
The planet began to spin like a top, rising slowing into the air until it was above the activity. With a loud POP, the sand that made the planet shifted about and reformed itself until it turned into a large floating house crest.

Ethan forced himself to turn into an upright position as soon as he saw a stray meteoroid shoot his way. Would have been disastrous indeed if it ended up inside his open mouth, no? Flying!Swimming away from where most of the students were positioned, the Slytherin was able to position himself and got a good view of planet two.
Getting another marble from his pocket, he positioned it at the tip of his wand, took his aim while slowly turning upside down again, pulled back and released the green marble, “Tikalas!”
Ethan tilted his head…and nodded to himself. Well, he’s definitely getting the hang of things even if he’s upside down.

Good that Admiral Flamsteed didn't explode very much when she said that it was her fault hitting him with the marble. "Aye, Admiral!" Ava just nodded when he said that she needed to work on her aim. So that means she'd better not to take a very further distance to shoot.
And planet 1 goes to Gryffindor. YAY!!!!
It made her wanted to shoot MORE marbles to the other planets. She was so on fire now. GOOOOOOOOO GRYFFINDOR!!!! The first-year lioness grabbed a red marble and then aimed to her next target: Planet 3. "Tikalas!" Ava pulled back her marble and WHOOOOOOOOOOOOSH!!! A beautiful red crater had been made at the Planet 3.

She fished another marble out her bag and tossed it above her wand. "Tikalas!" she called out. She pulled back until she saw that same faint, golden-colored band. She eyed the planet then released the marble straight toward it. She beamed in excitement as it plummeted into the sand.

After his last hit, the first planet, now scarlet red, swirled and was out of the game. Obviously that one went to Gryffindor. As usual. “Ho hum.” Ethan sighed at the red planet above them and stared at it with a bored expression. Surely, the sight would be better if it had a green planet alongside it, yes?
Yes.
Looking down, it was obvious to the seventh year that the Slytherins should concentrate on planet two because they’re close to dominating it. He however, wasn’t going to open his big mouth and go RA RA RA on his housemates. They were all intelligent and smart people, so they’d know what to do. Besides, he thought it was better to keep his mouth shut in Astronomy. Nothing correct comes out of his lips anyway, except for a few spells.
Now…wha was he supposed to do again? Yes, right, dominate Planet Two.
Retrieving another green marble from his pocket, he aimed at the said planet, said the incantation “Tikalas!” and his marble was off and crashed on his desired planet, enveloping it with a patch of green.

When planet one began to spin and changed into a house crest Hady couldn't help but laugh. It was pretty cool watching it however it wasn't her house crest which caused her to frown slightly. There was still time however and two more planets to aim for.
With her feet kicking about gently in the air she pulled another marble from her bag inside her pocket. There was no time to be wasted here she needed to help her team. Lining the marble up with the tip of her wand she took aim at the closest planet to her. "Tikalas!" She called out clearly pulling the marble back as she spoke the 'las' part. When the gold band appeared just like before she let go watching the marble soar towards planet number three.
It was a.... MISS?! What? How?!
How had she missed that. Her sight had been perfect and yet somehow she'd missed the planet by not even all that much. Crinkling her nose a little bit in displeasure she shook it off and got ready to try again.

If anything, it was now easier to target two shifting objects, so he can thank the Lions for that. However, the game is still on, so it also means that they shouldn’t stop hitting the planets with as much green marbles as possible. Who knows, maybe they can get the two remaining planets to turn green?
Somersaulting in mid-air, Ethan got another marble from his pocket, aimed at planet two once more, and released his ammo. “Tikalas!”
And there goes another point.

This activity was SO MUCH FUN, OKAY???
Ava couldn't stop beaming once she successfully hit the marble on the planet. This reminded her of shooting stations at her favorite arcade game only this one was using magic of course. The brunette lioness grabbed another red marble and scanned around. Well, Planet 3 seemed to be a good target for her. She aimed her marble to that planet and cast the spell again. "Tikalas!" She pulled back the marble and..... HIT!
Just another beautiful red crater courtesy of Ava Burton, ladies and gentlemen. Maybe for now she should focus on claiming planet 3.

That was HER planet! Hers! The first planet was supposed to be hers. Why was it not hers? Why was it the Gryffindors'?! That was unacceptable! Flamsteed had probably cheated. But now they couldn't count the colored stains anymore because the 'planet' had transformed into a Gryffindor crest. As if to like rub it in or something!
UGH!!!!!
Maggie was already holding another green marble up over the tip of her wand when the announcement had been made. Ugh! The red crest was mocking her. So without really thinking about it, Maggie aimed at the Gryffindor house crest. "Tikalas!" And with that the green marble went flying off to what was formerly the first planet. | |

Marisol decided to take one last shot at Planet Three. "Tikalas!" she said, feeling the soreness in her arm. Yeah, she was done after this.
So she threw the green marble in a perfect arc towards the round planet. It made a gorgeous crater.

Wooooooooaaaahhh. That was COOOL. How did Flamsteed even know the spells to make that happen? They probably didn't teach that in school, right? How to turn a giant sand planet into a house crest didn't seem like something that was going to show up in their Transfiguration lesson anytime soon, which was really a shame because it'd be cool to know. Y'know, if she ever ran into a sand planet somewhere and wanted to have some fun with it. It COULD happen one day, you never knew. That was a really good thing to add to her bucket list.
Now that the first planet was a Gryffindor one, Norah set her sights on planet #2 for REAL. She fly!swam to the left a bit more, not pausing to attempt a twirl because there was serious business going on, uh huh. She chose another marble and helf it over the tip of her wand. "Tikalas!" Once the ring of gold had formed she released the marble in the direction where she hoped it'd hit the second planet. Her gaze followed the little yellow dot until it exploded into a bunch of teeny weeny dots upon making contact with the second planet. HUZZAH! This one had to end up theirs, it HAD to. After all her effort 'n everything it was only fair.

After her previous miss Hady knew she had to get back on her A game. She had been doing awesomely well before that last shot.
Taking a deep breath and stretching her arms up over her head she was once again ready. Spinning on the spot Hady tried to avoid an collisions with anyone, or any marbles. Even if it wouldn't hurt she didn't fancy getting hit with one thank you very much.
Selecting another marble from the pouch in her pocket she held it over the tip of her wand. One eye closed she lined the marble and her target planet up turning ever so slowly as the planet moved still.
"Tikalas," She said clearly sliding her green marble back as she said the 'las' part. The second the gold band appeared Hady released the marble watching it go.
SMASH! A perfect green crater on planet 2. Good work Hady. All she had to do was keep this up.

This was starting to look like a very intense game of marbles.
And PHILLIP LOVED THAT.
The first year was ALL too happy to push his desk downwards -- HA HA goodbye notes -- and take out his wand. MAGIC and GAMES where they got to DESTROY things, kinda. Create craters that THEN destroy claim the sand planet as their own. Who could say no to THAT?
So, he reached into the little drawstring bag and pulled out a shiny green marble. GREEEEEEEN. It was a good thing he liked the colour because something told him that being in this house for seven years was going to be longer than usual if he hated seeing it around everywhere.
Chanting the spell a number of times under his breath, Phillip started arranging the marble over the top of his wand like Flamsteed had told them to. Tikalas....... Tikalas....... which sounded like a tickling spell........ "TikaLAS!" He pulled the marble back on the 'las' bit, aimed and..........
......................
"NOOOOOOOOO! MARBLE COME BACK RIGHT NOW!" Or at least HIT the planet it was meant to hit instead of flying off in a completely different direction.
Grumble grumble.

Oh, would you look at that; the first planet went to Gryffindor.
Paulina smiled as she watched. How cool was that? She wondered if the same would happen for Hufflepuff but wouldn't be upset if it didn't. The most important thing was to have fun, not to win. Or at least that was how she felt on the matter.
Extracting another yellow marble from her bag, Paulina got ready to send it off flying towards one of the remaining planets. Marble over her wand, she muttered the spell while making sure to pull the marble back at the right moment. Seeing the gold band that told her everything had been done correctly, she let the marble fly.
For a second she thought she had missed, but the marble managed to hit the planet. Just was far from the center was all.
Paulina smiled as she looked at all the pretty colours. | |

SO. MUCH. FUN. AJ really loved and appreciated when a professor could understand the importance of hand on lessons. Airey was really good at putting you to sleep and then making up for it by letting you do something awesome. He was a good man or, erm... admiral. Anyways, things were going do and AJ was missing out on a lot of the action which just wasn't okay.
Before long Airey had announced that the lions had won the first planet. WOOT. Roar, roar, Gryffindor. They were clearly the best house and it was nice to see that actually being shown in the competitions.
Time to be an asset to her team. AJ grabbed a marble and held it over the tip of her wand. "Tikalas." She made extra sure to pull the marble back on the 'las' part of the incantation. Faint gold glow around the marble was happening.
Aim was something that she had, and the lion shot the marble off to planet number 2. It only made sense that she would go for the next planet in line. Might as well make them all property of the lion house. Boom. That was a hit. WOOT!

Oh, yeah! Her last marble had hit the planet and was, she thought, a success! Not wanting to miss a beat, Kate pulled another marble out her little drawstring bag and tossed it into the air. She was going to aim for planet two again, because she figured the more she aimed for one planet, the better her chances were of claiming that planet for the Ravenclaws!
"Tikalas!" she called out.
She pulled back and watched for the golden-colored band that indicated her spell had worked. When it showed, Kate released the marble and sent it toward the "planet". Waiting...waiting...waiting...
...and it HIT!
Kate did a little fist pump, all the while making sure to hold on to her wand and her drawstring bag of marbles.

Okay, he could do this. No more stalling. Gryfffindor had already taken the first planet and as much as he loved his best friend, he did need Hufflepuff to bring home SOME cake. So he was going to start the trying now. And he was going to nail this, mmhmm.
Holding a marble over his wand, Brian said very slowly, "Tikalas," pulling back on the last syllable and seeing a faint gold band form between his wand and the marble like the elastic part of a marble shooter thing. It was really rare that he got a spell right on the first try - actually probably closer to borderline impossible - but he had done it? Wow. Okay. This was proving to be a good day. Or night. Oh well.
In his excitement, the Hufflepuff had kind of started jumping a little bit and accidentally launched the marble - OH NO - at the middle planet that was as of yet unclaimed but was looking very red. No way. IT HIT? IT HIT! Cue excited squealing and jumping because Ensign Brian Woods was a real child when it came to in-class activities that were this cool. And a happy dance. Why? He hit a planet on sheer luck. He deserved a bit of self-recognition. It didn't get much cooler than that, did it? Nah. Probably not.
Now he just wanted to make another marble go WHOOOOOOOOOOOSH. | |

Phillip Romalotti was shocked, OKAY? S H O C K E D. LOOK AT HIS FACE. The green marble was completely forgotten about at this point as the first year STARED at the first planet. Hadn't they been WINNING at one point? What HAPPENED? HMMMMMM?
More grumbling.
Reaching into his drawstring bag, the boy brought out another green marble and started to take aim again. It WAS just like playing marbles........ or gobstones. But the only great thing about gobstones was the GOO that sprayed out, which made them that little bit better than playing with boring old marbles.
............ Uh. What was he doing again?
Right. Marbles. Craters. "TikaLAS!" Aim was taken, marble was pulled back and then..........
............. WHOOSH!
BOOM!
Well, it didn't REALLY go BOOM but it was MUCH more interesting to pretend that it did.
And hey, he hit a planet! Did anybody see that? DID THEY?

Not that she was bragging or anything like that, but Kate felt like she was on a ROLL! She'd made three hits in a row and was hopeful that she could help claim planet two for Ravenclaw. Were there any other Ravenclaws around? Looking around, she saw Davie nearby and pushed herself over until she was right by him. "Aim for planet two," she encouraged. "If we all go for the same planet, that'll increase our chances!" Did he hear her? Hopefully.
Kate didn't bother with pushing and struggling to get back to where she came from. There was plenty of room here, so she just stayed put. She reached into her bag and got a fourth marble. How many were in there? She had no idea, and if the professor had said so, she had forgotten what he said.
Never mind that. She tossed the marble in her hand up into the air. "Tikalas!" she said. She waited a few seconds until everything was set up the right way, and then she pulled back, sending the marble sailing toward planet two. It was a HIT! YES! Come on, Ravenclaw! Planet two is ours!
