Nothing would have raised your suspicions for an unusual Arithmancy lesson from the noticeboard, but the closer you get to the classroom, the stranger it ...smells? Yes, it definitely smells, well, soothing. And when you round the corner and spot the classroom, it's immediately obvious why.
The classroom is gone.
In its place, elaborate transfigurations have taken place to turn the room into a temple courtyard. Incense burns from the table, and soft light pours in from the windows. Even the smell of fresh mountain air is present. Taken together, a soothing, calm atmosphere prevails.
Professor Tanner is prepared to greet you from the mat she sits on. You can find your own cushion on a pile inside the door.
OOC: Class will begin this evening EST. Until then, try not to be too loud and rowdy - Tiara won't like you spoiling the ambiance!

Still reeling from his insecurities being heard by the Professor (and really, if she heard then WHO ELSE HAD), Blaise could only nod at Zeke's suggestion. Not like he could decline, the boy was already circling the cim bucket around the incense and making his way back.
With a heavy sigh, the young Gryffindor took the bucket and got on his knees then tilted the bucket slightly. Not wanting to have to start all over, he was very careful with his shaking of the bucket while the question ricocheted off the walls of his mind.
Shake. Shake. Shake.
Huh. 20. "What does this mean?" He asked, offering Zeke the stick to hold while he took one of his cim buckets and headed for the incense. Three circles later, he was back to take his stick and offer the bucket. "Is 20 good or bad?" Not that it mattered. He didn't want a future in stupid magic anyway.
Honestly, he wasn't sure he was going to remember all this terminology stuff for the Kau Cim reading things, like that 'q' word - already forgotten - though it was something he was sure he would be able to remember if he spent some time revising it. For now though, the interpretations were what interested him.
Zeke watched as Blaise shook the bucket, curious as a single stick fell out.
20. And WHAT did it mean? Zeke shrugged, he hadn't opened his textbook yet, and he wasn't in a hurry to do so right away. He wanted to know HIS number first, and THEN he'd be motivated to get his book.
"Not sure man, guess we'll find out soon?"
He looked to Professor Tanner quickly before turning his attention to the Cim bucket that was being offered to him. That was quick. Whether 20 was good or not was still yet to be determined. "I'm going to hazard a guess and say good," he decided, just because.
Zeke thought very deliberately about his question, having decided to ask about whether he would be a Curse Breaker after school. With his thoughts locked on that, he positioned himself on his knees and turned the bucked on a downward angle before gently shaking it.
Shake, shake, shake, shake.... there were two that appeared to be at risk of falling, one more so than the other. Shake. And only one fell out. 57. "Fyi, your number looks better," Zeke decided out loud. 20 somehow seemed a more positive number than 57. 57 was just... odd, literally.

"Number 29...." he read off the stick before returning it with its breathren into the cim bucket. The Gryffindor wrote it down in amongst his notes to refer back to seeing as they weren't quite doing actual interpretations yet.
Then getting up off his knees, he went to where the incense burned, the cim bucket grasped carefully in his hands. One...two....three...hearty hand mixing, and then ge could return to Adi once he was done. "Your turn," he mused rhetorically as he handed the bucket of sticks over to his friend. The question was already known, so now they just had to see.
"It's a very interesting one,'' Adi agreed, grinning still. And seeee? He just knew that Benny also knew the answer. He now watched the lion grab the stick that he had shaken out. Number 29. Cool! "I wonder what it means,'' he said. But they'll get to that later. Yep.
"Thanks!'' Cim bucket in hand, the Hufflepuff Querent kneeled, focusing on his question. "Will I pass all my NEWTs?'' he asked quietly. Though it wasn't a personal question, he still didn't want everyone to hear he was THAT nervous about his exams. Hadn't he disappointed enough of his Professors and friends earlier in the term when he punched Henric? Imagine disappointing them again with failure at this major exam...
Anyway, Adi held the bucket at a downward and and shook the thing gently. Shake, shake, shake! Oh, hai! A single stick fell out. Woot! "Number twenty.'' He climbed to his feet again. Now they just had to do the actual reading.
Norah was always so enthusiastic and positive, that it made Tia feel all warm and fuzzy. Plus, the girl was a Prefect, so she had to have some idea when it came to this stuff - or at least be able to figure it out. Not that Tia didn't know what she was doing; because she totally did, but it helped when the partner had some idea what was going on too.
Heh, Norah's question actually made Tia smile because she was pretty sure she would have asked the same thing one year ago. And though she hadn't done as well as she hoped, she was content with her scores.
"Might as well. So uh, I think you're supposed to kneel down and keep thinking that question." Taking control of the cim bucket, Tia held it at a downward angle towards Norah and gently agitated it, in hope to get just one stick to slip out onto the floor.
Well if Tia was smiling her question hadn't been that horrible, right? Unless it was the mocking kind of smile, but it didn't LOOK like one of those, which had to be good news. Norah grinned in response and knelt down just like Tia had instructed.
Okay. Thinking of the question. Will I get any O's on my OWLs? She opened one eye and took a peek at Tia as she swirled the sticks around, then shut it again to concentrate on the question some more. Will I get any O's on my OWLs? WILL I GET ANY O'S ON MY OWLS?

Kate was still lost in her thoughts and getting kind of comfortable, when the professor spoke again. At least she didn't yell out at them and startle the entire bunch. Smart woman, she was. A bucket made its way around, and Kate collected it. Seventy-eight sticks. Hmm. Alright.
So now for a partner. Mmkay. "Does anybody still need a partner?" she asked...because she did. "Or does anybody want a group of three?" Somebody? Anybody? Somebody please take me in, and don't make me look like a fool any longer!
...and now, she waited. Maybe the professor gave out points just for asking for a partner...

Concentrating on the cim tube, Tia swirled it carefully, as Norah was focused on her question. Slowly though, as she swirled it and gently angled it down at the same time, watching as one stick made its way from the tube and landed near the fifth year's knee.
"I think you have your answer," Tia whispered for Norah to open her eyes and see what number stick she got.

Waving to the younger claw, Tia smiled over at her. Surely Norah wouldn't mind a group of three. "You can join us, if you'd like, Kate. I just finished with letting a stick fall out for Norah."

When the cim bucket was handed to her she took it carefully in her hands as she focused on just one question. Kneeling down onto the floor Hady kept her train of thought centered on just that one thing. When there was nothing else but that in her mind she finally whispered her question, "Will I someday become a Magical Creatures Healer?" It's the only thing she ever wanted to be when she left Hogwarts. Slowly tipping the cim bucket a little bit she began to shake it gently. She continued to shake it around until eventually just one of the sticks inside fell out onto the floor. Picking the stick up she read the number that was written on it. "56." Now what did that mean?
Paulina smiled at Hady. She was right; it was all in hard work. "Thank you for believing in me." Reassurance was always a nice thing because sometimes she felt a little overwhelmed and doubted herself. That was when she stepped back for a bit and tried to get a hold of things.
Interesting question, and Paulina watched carefully as her partner shook loose a stick. Number 56... She knew what the numbers meant since she was familiar with this type of divination arithmancy but clearly Hady didn't. "Well, hopefully things will work out for you!" She didn't want to share what the fortune meant since Hady would soon see for herself.

"Here you go." Angel wanted to know what the question her younger friend was asking was but she didn't want to seem rude and so she just decided to hold out the sachet with the sticks in, ready for her friend to take one.
So she was going to be the querent first. OK then. Janelle was ready, at least the thought that she was. She would ask her question and pick a stick. Easy. She could do this. "I'm ready", she said to her partner. Janelle sat back and watched as Angel went through the preparatory steps. Now, it was time for her to do her thing.
When Angel held the bucket out, Janelle took it from her. Then she fell to her knees and began to concentrate. She concentrated on her question longer than was really necessary. When she couldn't stall anymore, Janelle whispered her question softly. "Will I ever be as good a student as Jasmine?" The real question was, would she ever be as good at anything as Jasmine? Janelle loved her sister to death and she was very proud of her, but she felt the need to measure up to her sister's standards. Now there were two people at Hogwarts who knew this.
Finally, Janelle tilted the bucket downward and gave it a good shake. Nothing happened. She kept on shaking until a lone stick decided to fall out. Picking it up, Janelle looked at the number and said it out loud. "Fourteen" Janelle couldn't wait to see what that meant. Now though, it was Angels turn.
"OK", she said to Angel. "Now you." Standing up, Janelle took the bucket around the incense three times. Then sticking her hand in the bucket, she mixed the sticks around several times. Janelle handed the bucket back to Angel. It was a relief to have her question asking over. Now she just had to wait for her partner to take her turn. After that, it was probably interpretaion time.

Saved by a fellow Claw! Kate no longer felt like an awkward blob moving around the room with no purpose at all. She smiled at Tia then made her way over to the two girls. "Thanks," she said to them. She knew Norah, too. Maybe not well, but she thought she remembered partnering up with her in class once.
So it was Norah's turn? "Okay, cool," she said. She settled down and turned her attention to Norah, waiting to see what would come of the reading.

Angel smiled as Janelle whispered her questions, she had a feeling it was a question she didn't want people to know about, so she wasn't going to ask her friend. She then saw her friend struggling to get a stick out of the bag, but in the end a single one fell out and it was number 14, now Angel had no idea what any of this meant since she wasn't good at Arithmancy and had never heard of this form at all.
Angel though had to concentrate on her question, she watched her friend as she moved the bag around and did everything she had done a few moments a go, two questions were in her head one for her and one for her sister, she wanted to see if her sister would get that unicorn she was after but in the end she realised she had to do the question on herself, or it probably wouldn't work.
"Will I become a famous explorer?" Angel whisper her question, she was scared of the answer, she had always dreamt after watching Lara Croft that she would be like her and go exploring in strange new places, especially that had plant life. she took the bucket and shook it a few times until a single stick fell out.
Angel picked it up and with a bit of dread and excitement at the same time she looked at the number. "It's got a number two on it." Angel wondered what that meant and why was she picking a low number, seriously she had expected at least a twenty something of other but alas that wasn't the case and now she smiled at Janelle. "I wonder what they both mean?"

Tiara hadn't noticed that one of her eagles was partnerless still. Fortunately, TiaMarie had taken Kate in to her group. Tiara nodded her approval; she wanted the members of her house to take care of their own.
Normally during lessons Tiara would circle the room to check in on how the various groups were doing. But there was already enough movement going on with people taking the sticks to the incense. Any more could throw off the querents' concentration, which was not something she wanted to be responsible for. Plus no one appeared to need her assistance or guidance. Therefore, she merely sat upon her cushion and observed.
OOC: I'll give you another day to finish up. And Happy Thanksgiving, U.S. members!
Just as she had informed Norah that her numbered stick was lying on the ground for her, Tia glanced over towards someone calling out for a partner or group of three. Oh, it was Kate!
Waving to the younger claw, Tia smiled over at her. Surely Norah wouldn't mind a group of three. "You can join us, if you'd like, Kate. I just finished with letting a stick fall out for Norah."
At Tia's words, Norah opened her eyes and looked at the number on the stick that had fallen. 38. What did that MEAN, though? Was she supposed to know? 'Cause she didn't know. Obviously if she really did get an O on an OWL, it wouldn't be for Arithmancy. Or anything close to an O, even. Even she couldn't dream for that, and her mum always said she dreamed far too much.
She beamed at Kate when she joined them, then retrieved her own cim bucket thing and moved it around one of the burning incense three times before returning to the two Ravenclaws. Ooookay. If I do the whole shake-y thing" did it have a name? "for Kate now, then she can do it for Tia and we'll all have a turn. Is that okay?" Hopefully it was, 'cause Norah was already turning towards Kate as she mixed the sticks around in the bucket and prepared for some shaking. "I think you think of your question now. Or say it, if you want. I pink swear I'll keep it a secret if you want it to be." Prefect's honor. If that wasn't already a thing she'd MAKE it a thing.

Interesting question, and Paulina watched carefully as her partner shook loose a stick. Number 56... She didn't want to share what the fortune meant since Hady would soon see for herself.
"You're welcome, I believe in all my friends." Hady smiled a little bit at Paulina. All her friends and fellow classmates were capable of doing anything they wanted to if they only tried hard enough to accomplish it. She had faith in them all to do great things someday.
When she had shaken the cim bucket and the stick numbered '56' had fallen out it confused her. Was this a good number, a bad number? Honestly the fourth year had no idea at all. Hearing the badger speak to her once again Hady lifted her head to look at her. "I hope so too. It's always been my dream. Do you know what these numbers mean?" Could she tell her if she did?

Interesting last name? "Yeah, my mother used to work here," Davie replied lightly, looking around the room as casually as possible. He was just glad he had a partner now, alright? No need to go into depths about his ever-present mum. So they had a querent, or the person with the query, and a partner... the partner passed the bucket around and then handed it back to them... did some mixing, and then the shaking happened... yeah, they could do that. No problemo.
Davie picked up the cim bucket and offered it to Dante. "Do you want to do your reading first?"
Ah former Headmistress's kid. Well whatever, not like he cared or anything. It was just he recognized the last name. That was it. "Alright and i go first sure" He took the offered bucket and started shaking it.
"Will Tanner forget to give us homework?"
He did not really care who heard the question or even if Tanner did.
He kept on shaking until on stick fell out onto the ground
"Sixty Nine"
He had no idea what that meant in the scheme of his question. Though that was David's job if he was listening to Tanner correctly.
"Now your turn i think"

Hazarding a guess sounded like the least secure way of figuring out what his future might be like. Even worse, if it was only a guess, how could he be SURE that he wouldn't end up peddling hot dogs on the streets of Diagon Alley? The little boy had had this internal struggle before and the fear of adding too much ketchup to the order was real.
Of course he didn't vocalize any of this but the doubt was evident as he watched his housemate shake the stick from the bucket. A part of him wanted the boy shaking a 20 too...because that way....if it really WAS a bad number they could....suffer together? Misery did love company afterall.
Alas, it turned out to be a number over twice as big and equally disappointing. Now they'd never be doomed to the same fate and if his WAS bad he'd suffer alone. "But your number's bigger and bigger things are usually better." It was a guarantee that the kid with 57 packs of jelly slugs was FAR happier than the kid with only 20. Surely he wasn't the only one who realized this.
The young Gryffindor rocked restlessly back and forth on the balls of his feet. How soon would the Professor let them take a look? The suspense was killing him.

Oh please. That was SUCH a stereotypical Gryffindor answer. Tiara normally didn't like to put things in house categories like that, but when the shoe fits..

Now then. They had their readings, but what about what they actually meant. The woman cleared her throat softly to call attention her way. Then, in a hushed voice, she spoke. "You should all have your numbers by now, or nearly at least." If they needed to finish up yet, she didn't mind. "But either way, you will be needing.." She left the sentence hanging, choosing to punctuate it with a flick of her wand. Previously unseen papers zoomed towards each person.
"The list of meanings can be found on this page for your ease of browsing. They are also in chapter 32 of your text." It looked like she had enough interpretation papers and everyone had one.
"Please keep an open mind. Remember: you control your own destiny and may choose whether or not to act based upon your findings." Ah, the divination aspect of her subject. Certainly not her favorite part to get into the philosophical implications.

Zeke couldn't disagree with Blaise more. "You're joking, right?" he started, disbelief on his tone. "Bigger doesn't mean better, if the number of your weight is bigger, you're fat... if your essay has a bigger word limit, it's more work... detention hours, reading requirements... bigger, is not better." Ergo, he wasn't looking forward to whatever 57 had in store for him. They could trade sticks, if it would make the boy feel better, he'd have no qualms about it.
But alas, it was interpretation time!
Zeke accepted the sheet of paper that zoomed their way. It was more convenient than working from his textbook at the minute, though he would definitely be reviewing it later, and interrogating his reading, and other readings... there was nothing stopping him from doing more.
"Hey look," he said as he moved the paper between them, his finger poised partway down the list at number 20. "Trust yourself! Your own ability will be your strongest asset... see? You'll be alright." Confidence, the kid needed it.

SPOILER!!: Paulina
"So do I," Paulina said with a smile. She believed that anyone could accomplish what they wanted to if they tried hard enough. Just that thought didn't seem to extend to HER at times. It could become easy to get discouraged.
Being a Healer was a nice dream to have, so Paulina could definitely understand that. Magical creatures needed looking after just as much as people did. "I know what they mean, yes. I've been to China and this method of arithmancy interested me." Making sure not to say divination again for the Professor; she was trying to be a good student.
Hady had decided long ago that Paulina was really nice but the more she spoke to the older girl the more she was reminded of Lux. Always so confident and helpful. She nodded in agreement though. People choose their own paths in life and it was up to them how they accomplished their goals.
Ah, well now that made sense. Hady was just about to ask Paulina if she could explain to her what her number meant but then she didn't have to. Falling silent the brunette listened as Professor Tanner spoke to them and accepted a sheet of paper with all the meanings to each number on it. Her eyes traveled over each number until she came to hers.
56. You will soon find out who your real friends are.
Well um alright then. What did THAT have to do with her career choice? Was someone she knew going to help her with her dream...or maybe try to mess up her dream? She'd much rather the first option with and instantly thought of Adi and how she'd told him what she wanted to do...how she was going to keep his farm of Hippogriffs healthy. This had nothing to do with that, right?

So it was Norah's turn? "Okay, cool," she said. She settled down and turned her attention to Norah, waiting to see what would come of the reading.

Okay cool. Group of three it was and she helped out a younger housemate. Tia glanced down at the stick that had fallen after Norah had looked first, because it was only proper to let her look first. 38. So did that mean she couldn't get that same reading or did she have to add that stick back to the bucket and they would just have to remember that number from when Tanner told them where they could find the interpretations. Which was now, in chapter 32 of their textbook.
Before she had the chance to debate on a missing number from the bucket, Norah had retrieved her own bucket. Oh that made sense now. "Sounds like a plan," Tia said, as she deliberated on her question some more while waiting for Kate to have her reading done by Norah. Nothing really for her to do except focus on her question, for right now.

Angel smiled at Janelle. "I'm sure that you will." Angel had heard her friend call out the number fourteen. "Your interpretation is this, if you work hard you will receive great rewards." Angel was sure that her friend would be happy about this, she was so excited for her younger friend. "Your going to get something great, because your always working hard Janelle."

Before Paulina could ask if Hady wanted to explain the interpretation, Professor Tanner was asking them to work it out on their own. Fine with her.
As she had already worked it out previously, she wasn't shocked upon checking and seeing that the reading for the number 14 was If you work hard you will receive great rewards. Pretty straightforward - a lot more so than her partner's had been. She wondered if that was something good or bad for her friend. Hopefully the former and not the latter.

Professor Tanner had begun to speak again and now she was revealing the interpretations. "This is it", she said to her partner. Janelle opened her book and began to search the numbers, but Angel beat her to the punch. She listened as the Gryffindor read her interpretation. If you work hard, you will receive great rewards. "Well that doesn't answer my question", Janelle said aloud. It was good to know that if she worked hard, it would pay off in the end. That didn't quite address what she really wanted to know though.......would she do as good a job as her sister?
Janelle figured that this was the time to interpret the interpretation. Maybe the point was that she should worry about doing her best and not about trying to meet some arbitrary standard that her sister set. When Angel added her opinion, Janelle smiled. "Thanks Angel. I try to do my best." And that was all that really mattered wasn't it? Janelle continued to think. Get over yourself and just do you. That was the thought for the day.
Now it was Angel's turn. Janelle looked in her book and found her partner's number. "Two. You will soon go on a long journey which will bring many benefits." Janelle looked at Angel. "Does that make sense to you? It definitely sounds positive to me."

....Why would he be joking about something so serious? Blaise blinked a few times, not really seeing where Zeke was going until he started listing a whole bunch of things that were bad in larger quantities. He wasn't exactly Mr. Bright Side, was he?
"Well yeah...." The little boy conceded, glancing over to get a look at the number meanings. "But if you have a bigger number of galleons you're rich, if you have more fans you're popular and if you have bigger muscles, you're stronger." Consequently, there was nothing Zeke could do to convince the boy that bigger was not better. He didn't mind word limits on his essays. Truth be told, his quill did most of the writing anyway unless the workload was manageable enough for him.
But anyway, his future was being revealed and the boy could only lean in closer. All he had to do was trust himself? That was all the advice the bloody piece of stick could offer? OF COURSE he trusted himself, it was that shoddy wand of his that gave him cause for concern! How was no one getting this? He bet he'd be a zillion times better at magic if his mum would humour him with a new wand.
MOVING ON. Blaise's eyes trailed further down the page until he found the next number in question. "Yours says 'you will settle on a plan that will prove to be advantageous to you'....so I guess if you settle on Curse Breaking it'll....be a good thing?" Which was a more definitive answer than 'trust yourself'.
He couldn't even.

The kid looked lost. Lost in thought? Maybe, or maybe his argument confused him. He was beginning to think this was the case, until there was some semblance of an agreement with his justification. See! He was right. No if's or but's about it. And then there was a but. T__________T
And AHA!... there was a SLIGHT flaw in his argument. "What if I only have sickles, but I have WAY more sickles than you have galleons, you might have more galleons, but I'd still be richer." Again, he was winning. WHY he was arguing about this, he didn't know, but he felt it his civic duty to point it out. As for more fans and bigger muscles... "Uh huh." Did those matter?
Either way, Blaise seemed to be handling his reading fairly well, and why wouldn't he? It was a fab reading. Like, NO he wasn't a failure and YES he could learn to do magic, so all in all = NOT SUCKY. ... and then there was his reading. "What the hell kind of answer is that?" he thought out loud. "It hardly answers my question, is that a yes? or a no?" It didn't say WHICH plan would be most advantageous, and advantageous hooooowww? Work was work, was it not? All he wanted to know was if Curse Breaking would be his line of work. Was he supposed to somehow know if it WOULD be advantageous? Would he have to make it so?
