It was time for another Arithmancy class! Tiara was excited for this one, though that wasn't really anything new. It was normal for her to look forward to lessons. But she had a special interest in this topic for some reason, so hopefully the students liked it as well.
The classroom is warm and cozy against the chill that has hung in the air the past week. Contrary to the normal setup of desks in neat rows, today there is a small clearing in the center of the room. On the floor in the open space is a taped-off square, further divided into nine smaller squares. Each section has a number, one through nine, but other than that there is no indication of today's topic.
Professor Tanner stands behind the podium, prepared to greet you as you walk in.
OOC: The lesson will officially begin in around 8 hours. The lesson has officially started. Assume this is not the first lesson of the term, so Tiara will know your character by now.

Buuut that didn't mean she wasn't going to try. Olympia grinned as she pushed the parchment back towards Ava. "Oh, so is she Russian?" She asked. Olympia could hear no trace of a Russian accent when Ava spoke, so perhaps not or maybe it just hadn't rubbed off on her. "Yeah, a lot of my family came here to.." Olympia was aware that some of her family had also graduated in places like America and she also had an Uncle that had undergone his Auror training in Australia. Her Father's side of the family had always been big travellers, and were rarely at home.
Deciding to steer the subject away from their families, Olympia asked a different questions. "Did you bring any pets with you?"

Aha!
There was finallllllly a pattern of Is together!
This was a no brainer for his next move. "Not going to get a win so easily, Benny,'' he said cheerfully and graciously smacked a great big X in the square on the far right to block a next O from going there. Sure, he did care about loosing to his friend but that didn't mean he wasn't going down without a fight. Hehe.

Boo. Adi had caught his lead and moved to stop his future win. Not that it was that hard and it was just a friendly game. "Aww shucks," he mused with a shake of his head. "You got me." Now where was he going next? That was the question of the game it seemed to him. With his threesome cut-off, the Gryffindor opted for the corner spot on the right side that blocked two of his friend's x's.

Adi grinned. Of course he got Benny. Just as Benny would have gotten him. "I think there's a way to cheat this game," he told his friend. "I think. I'm not sure." By cheating, he meant that there was a way to ensure there was a winner at least most of the times. He now watched Benny have another go at the game. The Hufflepuff winked. "I bet you know where I'm going to play next, right?"
Adi picked up his quill again and made an X in the first square on the left. "And now I can predict where you will play." Hehe. It seemed as though there would be no winner for this game. But that's how a lot of them turned out, right?
He liked how these plans were coming along. He was even gonna make sure he did all his homework on Friday so he wouldn't have anything stopping him on Saturday. Barring that, if laziness kicked in then he'd just wait til Sunday night and hope it didn't all keep him up too long.
Now then, he needed to find a partner? It was always partners wasn't it? Kinda made things harder for him when everyone that asked for a partner actually got one.
Blaise looked around the room, hoping he could still find ANYONE and that's when his eyes fell on Daxton, sitting there by himself. He'd never been happier to see the boy sitting by himself and before the opportunity missed him, the boy hopped up from his own seat and went to take the one before his year mate and past partner in crime. "Mind if I join you?" He wouldn't answer, not verbally anyway but Blaise didn't wanna be rude or pushy.
At the same time though...he did...kinda....put an 'O' on the paper. Ahem. Sorry?
The thing about playing noughts and crosses (or 'tic-tac-toe', as Tanner had called it) by yourself was that there was no painstakingly long wait while you had to wait for someone else to make their move. It took only a couple of seconds for Daxton to decide on his next move, and he was about to draw it into the grid when someone else took it for him.
He blinked, staring at the parchment and then up at the boy who had asked to join him. Daxton recognised him of course. Blaise Bellaire, with whom he had conspired in Defence Against the Dark Arts to turn out the lights and throw the broom closet full of people into darkness. The Gryffindor boy got a moment of shrewd consideration, before Daxton put pen to parchment again and drew in his next move, a means of silent consent.

"Yeah, my mom is Russian. My older siblings were born there too, but I was born here." So she didn't really know about the Russian heritage that her mother inherited. She did being tutored the language but she gave up because it's so difficult. The only Russian family that she'd ever saw was her cousin Sophia. Nothing else. The young lioness had never been there too. So... she couldn't say that herself is Half-Russian even her mother was Russian.
"I have Preston, my cat." She smiled. Ava just loves any kind of animals. "Too bad that school doesn't allow me to bring corn snake or iguana. Well, my mom also said that I'm too young to have reptiles as my pet." She pouted. Well, her mom often disagreed about everything that she thought or say. Dunno why. "How about you? And what's your favorite place to hang out around here?"

"So um Paulina, how do you like Hogwarts?" she asked trying to give them a little conversation while they played their game of tic-tac-toe.

Impatiently, Olympia put her quill down. Seriously, how long did they have to play this for?? She nodded her head as Ava talked about her Mother and siblings.
Ohh, but she had a cat. "I've got a cat to! Bella." Olympia also smiled. She laughed at Ava's expression. "You want a snake as a pet??" She found this odd, not that she had anything against snakes but Olympia was unsure of what they actually did. They were quite pretty though. Nice to look at.
Hm, that was a tricky question. The third year shrugged. "I don't really have a favourite place.." She answered truthfully. "I'm enjoying these camp things the Headmaster's insisting on doing though. I like being busy.." Olympia smiled at Ava again. "What about you?"

Hady grinned at Paulina. Knowing older people was always good in her book. So working together during a class she wasn't great at with an older friend was fine by her.
Rules. Yeah some of these new rules were a bit odd she had to admit. "No, not usually. This year they seem to be the strangest. Maybe it's to get everyone to lighten up a little or something. I'm not entirely sure," Hady shrugged but also laughed quietly. Most of the rules as silly as they were weren't all that bad.
Watching the older girl make her move using an 'O' Hady then added her 'X' onto the board.

It didn't seem like either of them was going to win this time around, especially as the badger made a move to block his next chance of winning. "What? It's true." Innocent shrug.
Looking entirely too smug, Soph gave Zander a nudge as if to say quit it, you're drawing attention to us, as if SHE wasn't drawing attention to them by giggling up a storm, then nabbed the quill from him and took her turn, still unable to fully stifle her amusement.
Everything was SO FUNNY. And... to the trained eye, it was definitely more funny than Sophie Brown would've normally ever thought it was, so there was... definitely some overcompensating going on. Too desperate to feel happiness and fight away the lingering bad feelings of worrying about Tobes was the real explanation, though right now, she wasn't self-aware enough to pick up on any of that. She was just engrossed in the moment and LIVIN' THE DREAM.
Yes Zander was quite aware of the fact that the sound of his knee hitting the desk could've potentially drawn the unwanted attention of Professor Tanner, but that look Sophie was giving him was hardly even fair. "You're entirely too pleased with yourself," he shook his head, attempting to look disappointed but failing terribly. Merlin. He couldn't even pretend to be mad while she sat there giggling up a storm. But HER giggling was no doubt what would get them the Professor's attention. Zander had hardly anything to do with it. Just sayin'.
He waited for Sophie to take her turn, hoping that she wouldn't block his three in a row-- But of course she caught it, so siiiiigh. Not that he was really paying any attention to the game anymore, anyways. Waiting until she was done, he politely took the quill from her hand and didn't nab it away UNLIKE SOME PEOPLE COUGH SOPHIE BROWN.
Hm.
Where to go? He had almost missed her top row, choosing to go for the bottom right corner... But before his quill hit the parchment WAIT. Aheeeeeem. There. That's where he meant to go from the very start.

There was just one grid left now and obviously Adi moved to fill it with an X. "Ding! Ding! Ding! We have NO winner,'' he announced. "A draw sounds about right.'' He lowered his voice now to whisper something only Benny could hear. "This game sucks. I never liked it.'' He hoped whatever Tanner had planned next would be much more interesting.
He moved on to set up another grid. "I reckon we still have some time left to play. You go first now and you can have Xs if you like.'' Wasn't he the ever considerate bestie? Haha.

Why was Zander looking at her like that? Sophie had hardly done ANYTHING AT ALL. Grinning angelically, she batted her eyes at him and replied breezily, "I have no idea what you're talking about." No idea AT ALL.
This game of tic-tac-toe was quite simple, really, and... there was no way anyone was going to win this, she could see it already. She was going to block his chance at a three-in-a-row now, then he would end up trying for the middle row, and she would block that... and it was going to end in a stalemate.
Better that way, really. Then they BOTH won.

Zander gave her a look as if to say 'YEAH, RIGHT'. Soph pls. She was like that sarcastic angel emoji personified. Zander Adair did not approve, for the record. Nooope. Even if he couldn't get the 'I'm not actually happy' look to translate properly. He was too busy being his goofy self, unfortunately. Sigh. The other good thing was that he wasn't going to lose. Except... He wasn't going to win either? Eh. He shrugged at Sophie as if the game even got heated in the first place 'cause really it didn't... David had a point, that was true. Rooney considered it for a moment as he accounted for the first years next move. "I suppose Professor Tanner will have a way." Because where there was a will, there was a way! Rooney placed his final move to complete their grid, mainly because he didn't want to leave a spot un-done. He wanted definitive proof that this had been a tie.

As another 'O' was added to their game of tic-tac-toe by her older companion Hady glanced towards the front of the room. Surely the ten minutes they had to play was just about up. Sadly. Hm, that was a tricky question. The third year shrugged. "I don't really have a favourite place.." She answered truthfully. "I'm enjoying these camp things the Headmaster's insisting on doing though. I like being busy.." Olympia smiled at Ava again. "What about you?"
"Well, it's not that hard to take care of snake as the pet." The young lioness said. She only needed to feed it once or twice a week.
She didn't have a favorite spot, really? "I love the treehouse." Ava said. "and the lake too. I do enjoy the breakfast event. It was fun. Does school always throw the fun activities like that?" She curiosly asked. Continuing the tic tac toe, she put down her last O

He wanted definitive proof that this had been a tie.
And there it was. Their tie. Or a cat's game, as David Truebridge called it. "I've never heard that saying before, David." That wasn't him discrediting it, in fact he was curious where the other boy had heard it.
"Good game, 'mate'."
Yeah, if she wanted an active class. Davie was fine with just sitting there quietly, taking notes and reading books and the like. He blinked out of his thoughts when Rooney said he'd never heard that saying.
"I'm sure that's a thing..." the boy replied cautiously, blinking at his fellow Ravenclaw, and then looking over his shoulder as though someone there could back him up. Right, "good game," Davie repeated, holding out his hand very formally since they had ended their game.

She was gonna give him the pity win.
With a simple smirk playing upon her lips, Sophie delicately took the quill from Zander and, without any hesitation, made her move in the bottom right corner.
Offering the quill back to him with one hand while she propped her head up on her arm with the other, Sophie continued to smirk at him. That was all. Just a smirk.
Gotcha, Head Boy.
What was she smirking about?
They were going to tie. Sophie Brown wasn't going to win? What in Merlin's name was up with that smirk???? It was kind of terrifying... But she had nothing to smirk about so whatever.
Zander took the quill from her and went to look at the-- SOPHIE BROWN.
What part of HE DIDN'T WANT the pity win, didn't she understand??????
........
What. He was probably giving her the exact reaction she was hoping for. G A H. SOPHIE BROWN. -_______-
Well he couldn't just take the move. Sophie would be all too pleased. And he DIDN'T want the pity win. If he was going to win he was going to do it right or not at all. He wasn't a Slytherin, he didn't just take what was dangled right in his face. He needed to put forth the effort. -______________- So uh, what now? He scratched his head for a second, still trying to decide on his move before turning back to Sophie. And giving her a look. Then back to the parchment.

HA. And then again he turned to Sophie, with a huge goofy grin on his face. "HA!"

You know what was really really REALLY hard? Being in a bad mood when a cutiepie firstie volunteered to be your partner. Her smile was much more cheerful than it had been when she entered the classroom as she held a hand out to greet the boy. "I'm Norah. Norah Kittredge." Hopefully he wouldn't be needing too much help if they ever did number things, 'cause she was rubbish at that. The game part could be lovely, though. "Sounds good!" She gave his grid an appreciative nod, then watched him draw his first O. Her turn!
Norah tried not to take too long in deciding where to put her X, but every time she moved her quill to make a mark, she'd draw her hand back again to think about it some more. The problem with tic-tac-toe is that it SEEMED so simple, but if you thought about it too much it got all complicated. Who needed thinking, anyways. She finally put an X right in the middle of the grid, where she'd planned on putting it initially before all the thinking happened. Giving Milo an apologetic grin, she nudged the parchment and grid in his direction. "Your turn."
"Hey Norah!" Milo said as he shook her hand back. He had just realized that she was a Hufflepuff Prefect for the badge had been small and he hadn't noticed when they were all just standing around. That was neat.
He watched her start to make a move and then pull her hand back as she thought more. Very good idea Norah. She didn't know that Milo was VERY good at this game. He used to make his mom play with him over and over until she would get frustrated from losing and tell him to go outside or read something. "Alright." He made his move and then made a motion for her to go.
