Default the Office of Professor Flamsteed

Perhaps the first thing you notice as you enter Professor Flamsteed's office is that it is...clean. Ridiculously clean. While he is not exactly obsessive compulsive about cleanliness, Professor Flamsteed highly values organization and keeps everything in a specific location. Needless to say, if one of his quills is at an odd angle ... he will notice. The wood cabinets above his desk are filled with all sorts of reference books on all branches astronomy on the left side while the right side is filled with works of muggle science fiction ranging from Douglas Adams to H.G. Wells to Robert Heinlein and everyone in between. His desk is mostly empty except for some black accents and a comfortable looking pillow where the professor's pet rocks, Pebbles and Boulder, tend to rest. Beside this is a plant in a unique looking planter.

On the walls are a few framed pieces of abstract line and paint splatter artwork that Professor Flamsteed has collected over the years along with a drawing given to him by a former student in a black frame just to the left of another large gifted piece of artwork also in a black frame above the sofa. Beside it is yet another drawing, this one signed, in another black frame. There is a black sofa up against one of the walls with a pet house and a pet bed on the floor beside it where Pebbles and Boulder sleep when not sharing the pillow on the desk. To the right of the black sofa and is a wooden closet where Professor Flamsteed keeps a few freshly pressed suits from his extensive collection, just in case, and to the left of this is a rather impressive looking tie display case. Located opposite of Professor Flamsteed's desk is yet another display case, but this one is filled with all sorts of muggle science fiction models - one of which is sporting something on its head - that he has built and painted himself - a hobby of his when he is not busy teaching, grading, or researching. To the left of this case is what appears to be a muggle telephone booth, but upon further inspection of it you will find Herschel scurrying about within.

OOC: please do not post here without having been invited in by Professor Flamsteed from the waiting area or spoken with me OOC. Posting without doing either of these puts your post at risk of being unceremoniously deleted.

And something wasn't just off... Something was wrong. Zander ALMOST jumped when the door was shut closed, but he managed to keep relatively still before walking his way over to one of the seats, leaving the one on the left side for his CoPrefect.

And then that question.

It was most definitely, one hundred percently the WORST question in the entire world.

Zander DESPISED it.

'Cause either you'd get the answer wrong and the person asking gets mad because you didn't say what they wanted you to say. Or you accidentally incriminate yourself even further by laying down details that they didn't already know. Or there's the slim chance in which you get it right, but still you don't want to admit the answer 'cause 'why do you think I asked you to come to my office' is never a happy phrase to hear. So this question just set a person up for failure. It was a lose-lose-lose. And thus, Zander's least favorite of all questions.

Uh.

Zander took a moment to think about it, though he could only really come up with one answer. Well, one answer he was willing to say out loud. "Are we in trouble, sir?" Or maybe he was just going to congratulate them on their OWL scores for Astronomy? It was wishful thinking given the Professor's overall tone. The obvious answer was because clearly Professor Flamsteed was going to take their badges away and only wanted them to think they were allowed to be Prefect again. Tear them down after building them up. Evil, but genius. Though it really didn't seem like something Flamsteed would do... Or maybe he was going to congratulate them for making it through the summer? Unlikely, but the preferred situation.

Basically, Zander had no idea.

Puck sidled her way past Professor Flamsteed and gave him a nod as she made her way into the room. “Did you have a nice Summer Professor Flamsteed?” She asked kindly, as well, maybe that would help with her situation from last term?

Obviously they weren’t losing their badges…because they hadn’t done anything at all the term in order to get into trouble. Heck, she’d been nothing but helpful to the first years all the way from the train to the party in the common room. Still, now as she took a seat at one of the empty chairs in the room across from Professor Flamsteed’s desk she just quietly reminded herself to breath.

When he asked why they were in his office she just looked over to Zander. Puck just felt her eyes widen in slight shock as she heard Zander ask if they were in trouble. “Professor, did you ask us here so that we can fix the issues we had last year in our leadership methods?” She asked sitting up as confidently as possible. “Because if that is the case I would like to hear your input and also I have ideas on some…things we can do with the younger gryffindors as a means of Spirit building.” She was trying to act as kind as possible.

“However…Professor, if Zander is correct and we are in trouble I would simply ask that he keeps his badge and would forfeit mine in order for this to happen.” She admitted in all earnest.

Summoning three cups from his shelf, the professor nonchalantly began preparing something hot to drink for the three of them. No gourmet marshmallows just yet, they would be too much of a distraction for himself during the initial part of their discussion.

"Yes," he replied calmly and simply to the lioness' question, not wanting anyone to become distracted by small talk when there were far more important things to discuss than summer pleasantries.

"Better question is were ever out of trouble?" he asked while pouring some hot water into the cups where bags of Earl Grey tea - his personal favorite brew - were waiting to steep. "The Headmistress may have given you back your badges, something I am grateful for and even personally requested myself, but I am not sure you two are aware of the ripples your actions caused. Some of which turned into proper tidal waves."

Which was partly what they were here to discuss and mostly not.

"Yes, in fact, Miss Greyvson. That was part of my hope...but seeing as you both seem to have the attitude and body language of already throwing in the towel...I am not so sure anymore." Firm, unusually so for the astronomer, but he felt he needed to be at the moment. He expected more confidence and rawr from his prefects. "You are both looking like proper white dwarfs right now."

Which was a true pity considering they both had so much potential.

He wondered why Professor Flamsteed entrust him with Boulder. He felt like he was the most inexperienced one in the school and giving him one would be a bad idea. He had cared countless of animals before but a pet rock would be the first.
"Of course I'm sure," he chortled. "It will save me a trip. Have to take three of them usually since I have Hershel as well." Although he was making arrangements with Miss Fields about that. "Once around the Black Lake and back is the usual. Or at least a part of the Black Lake. Boulder especially likes to play in the water."

He gave his office another look over and then began walking over to the door with Pebbles being dragged behind him on her pink leash.

"Unless there are any further questions, I suggest we get going."

When prompted to 'lay it on him', Zeke inhaled a breath and nodded. Here it went.

"Professor, I think I'm in trouble already and I don't know what I did." Yes, big problem, and really, he didn't know WHY he'd lost his strike. It seemed a stupid thing to lose for asking about it, so he figured that wasn't the case. "Professor Sabel... er... Dakest," he corrected, though he DID have permission to call the man by his first name. "He has a rule about people having two strikes, but, that rule doesn't apply to me, I only have one.... why?" Yes, WHY PROFESSOR AIREY?! WHAT WAS THIS SO CALLED POLICY ON STRIKES?!

And this was just the tip of the iceberg, as a third year he had MANY issues and concerns... this was going to be a long meeting, even if he only promised a short one. Whoops?

Trouble? What sort of trouble? And surely if one were in REAL trouble they would know, yes? No question about it.

Therefore, Airey was already inclined to tell Mr. Zeke that he was not truly in trouble.

And he only tried to hide his amusement when the young man continued.

"I think your question is best directed towards Professor Dakest himself," the astronomer replied. "I am not a legilimens, Mr. Zeke. I do not know the inner workings of your Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Unless, there is more to this story that you wish to tell me."

Puck was listening to what Professor Flamsteed said and shrunk back a bit at first. That is, until he said that she looked like she was throwing in the towel. That was not the case at all – no, she was just trying to remain calm and level headed.

“Professor, I am not throwing in the towel.” She informed him as she felt her spark returning. “I also am not a White Drawf sir, I simply am focusing on listening to what you have to say. And when there is a time that I can interject ideas for said ‘spirit’ and leadership methods for Gryffindor I will.” She was sitting up even more now her chin no longer held close to her chest as it had been before.

“I for one think that we could really do with some house spirit…maybe even promoting an inter-house gobstones game so that our gobstones members can improve their skills before our next game.” She proposed and grinned to herself. Really, after all gobstones was one of the ways they could get more house points.

“Another idea I did have was having an astronomy related camp out or utilizing the observatory as a means for said campout as we could still be warm but watch the stars and teach our younger students about astronomy. That way you as a teacher can have a legacy of very brilliant Gryffindor’s in your classes.” She meant it. Really. She liked astronomy…”and my final idea was having a buddy system in classes? Elder students get to meet and get to know all of the first years and work in classes to help said first years out.” As she spoke she got a bit louder, unintentionally as really…this was something she thought would work would be fun. Heck, it could be great.

Henric glanced down onto Boulder. They were going to walk the pet rocks outside? Henric wasn't suspecting it at all, he watched how professor Flamstead dragged Pebbles across the floor with her pink leash. If it wasn't for Professor eccentric character and his adoration for his pet rocks, Henric would think he just stepped into a strange world of the oddities.
"No professor, I'm right behind you,"Henric replied and followed what Professor Flamsteed did. It was like walking a dog right? Henric didn't know for sure...on a second thought...he should carry Boulder into his arms...He picked Boulder up again and walked out from the professor's office.

Okay so maybe Puck was taking the whole ‘buttering-him-up-with-kindness” route, but Zander was just gonna stick to the whole “it’s-coming-not-matter-what-so-maybe-I’ll-just-stay-quiet” approach. And it seemed like Professor Flamsteed was quite aware of what Puck was trying to do, ‘cause boy did he shut her down quickly. It kind of freaked him out, y’know? Professor Flamsteed was NEVER like this. He was quite rude when he was Hooksteed a couple of terms back, but he was never as… harsh. It had Zander expecting the absolute worst.

…Were they ever out of trouble? Apparently not. It was a horrible detention, yes, and house points were lost (though rather minimal), but still Zander had known they got off too easy. He just didn’t think it’d carry over into this term. Oh dear Merlin. ”Tidal waves?” he repeated in concern. What kind of tidal waves? He wanted to know, but a part of him also didn’t.

And then Puck told Flamsteed exactly what she had told Zander outside of the office. Zander gave her a ‘no-way!” kind of look, but couldn’t say anything more as Professor Flamsteed began speaking once more. No one would be sacrificing their badges on his watch. And furthermore, he wasn’t just going to give it away without some sort of fight in him. Maybe he would’ve easily handed it over last term, but now that Sophie Brown was a Prefect… It was just the plan, y’know? He was so excited about the team, he couldn’t give that away. Not after they had already gotten the badge again. He needed Puck to know that they wouldn’t be splitting up as a team. Either they won’t went down together or they both stood strong together. He tried to express all of this with a glance her way, but there was no way all that could be translated. Not to mention the fact that he still looked pretty nervous about the whole ordeal.

He thought he was being pretty subtle about it too… But evidently not because Professor Flamsteed definitely did take notice. And Zander found himself zoning out a bit as Puck went on to speak. He wasn’t quite sure exactly what she was going on about, only catching a few key words here and there. Instead he was dwelling on what his Head of House had to stay. Zander wasn’t a quitter. He wasn’t throwing in the towel. That’s not what he was trying to do here. And then it clicked.

He moved around in his chair a bit until he was sitting straight. Trying to lose any sign of how nervous he really was, trying to channel his inner Grayson Whitlock, if you would. Except of course he could never pull that off. But the point was, for the first time he was trying. He hadn’t realized how much the badge meant to him before. Maybe he realized it when it had been taken away from him last term, but that was really the only time. He didn’t care about the power… It was exactly what he said in his yearbook interview. It meant his Astronomy Professor saw something in him, but whatever it was Professor Flamsteed wasn’t seeing it anymore.

He waited until Puck was done, and for Professor Flamsteed. ”Professor, I know I really messed up last term, but I promise I will work harder this time… We’ll work harder this time. We’ll do whatever it takes to prove that Gryffindor can bounce back,” he looked over to Puck in confirmation that she was on the same page, which hopefully she was. And just to emphasize what Puck had said, ”We are not throwing in the towel, Professor.” He mussed his hair a bit, hoping that his nerves weren’t showing through as much as they were when he first entered the office, though it was hard to do so. ”If we haven’t proved it by the end of the year… Well, take our badges then… But please let us have this chance. We won’t disappoint you again,” he pushed himself back to lean against the back of his chair. But still he kept his gaze forward on his Professor.

Please?

Zeke was already shaking his head. Nope. Nope. He was NOT going back to Sabel... he would NEVER ask about the strikes again.

"But you're a Professor, Sir, so like... don't you all have common policies about these things? See at first I didn't know what a strike was, all I knew was that we got 2 each... and then Sab--Professor Sabel said except me, I only have one, and I don't know why. It can't be a good things, less is never more, no matter what anyone ever says."

So? HELP HIM?

"We were just having a chat, there's nothing more to it, really, I was just wanting to clarify and negotiate some of his rules." And there was nothing wrong with that, SURELY. Right? Zeke's legs bounced with nervous energy.

"Assuming that it is a bad thing I've lost it, which I think is right, how do you think I might go about getting it back?" Couldn't Professor Airey just go and talk to the man? Advocate for him or something? Isn't that what Head of Houses were supposed to do?

Please?

Airey rubbed his temples as he listened to the pair of them speak and for once actually appreciated Mr. Adair's brief and almost painfully modest type of reply. "Then I suggest to do just that and listen, Miss Greyvson," he said, drawing his attention towards the prefect and away from his cup of tea. "And be much more mindful of what it is you are saying. Words like 'forfeit' do NOT paint a very positive picture. I am not seeking selflessness or what either of you suspects to be chivalry, my concern right now is about you two. As individuals. As leaders. As role models. NOT just for Gryffindor."

So, forgive him for not jumping up and down at your suggestions, Miss Greyvson. They were far from the point he was trying to make right now. They could discuss those things with one another. It WAS part of their roll as prefects for the house, after all.

"I'm going to ask you both to cease thinking about others for now and focus solely on yourselves," he instructed as he pushed two pieces of empty parchment towards them. "It has bee observed by myself and other professors that the both of you lack an understanding of what it is you bring to the table. Whether this is because you are too humble or your attention is too focused on other things is an answer that only you will be able to figure out, but only if you are honest with yourselves." Pieces of parchments now in front of the two, the professor leaned back in his seat and was suddenly whisked back to his days as an astronaut trainer. "On those pieces of parchment, I want you to list the things that you see as your existing leadership strengths and skills. At least 5. When you have done that...." he continued, reaching for two more pieces of parchment and slipping them towards the pair. "...you are to write another 5 strengths and skills you see your partner possessing in terms of their leadership. Understood?"

Airey chuckled under his breath. "I am not at liberty to discuss such policies, but to say that every single student is on the exact same playing field I believe to be a bit generous a statement," he replied with a coy smile. "I could not possibly hold seventh years and first years to the same standards in quality of work, for example." Not the same sort of thing the boy was inquiring about, but he had shared mostly to get Mr. Zeke away from thinking along such lines. "Perhaps, Professor Dakest simply holds you to a much higher standard than others? I know for a fact that he would not be alone in such sentiment."

He leaned back in his seat and offered the Gryffindor a quick wink.

"Well, if it were me and a student wanted to get back in my good graces...say they damaged a suit or insulted Pebbles or did the unthinkable and referred to astronomy as astrology...then what would NOT want to see would be any sort of brown-nosing sort of behavior," he warned. No gifts. No over the top compliments. No going out of their way to clean the Observatory. None of that. The stink of desperation was unbecoming on even the finest of students. "What I would rather s-----"

But just then Hershel began chewing on the bars to his cage and running around the bottom of it at an obnoxious speed that was too distracting.

"Oh sweet solstice, Hershel," he grumbled as he stood and grabbed a leash from the topmost drawer. "Alright alright! We'll go." He turned towards Mr. Zeke and sighed, ferret now in its harness and tugging on its leash towards the door. "Terribly sorry, Mr. Zeke. Would you mind continuing this discussion outside? I've been neglecting Hershel and his walks recently and he is a bit moody."

In fact, the boy could even walk him. Would be doing the man a HUGE favor.

Not at liberty to discuss policies?!?!?! REALLLYYYYYY? What happened to.. to... to... transpear-being-see-through?! HUH?!... "That's hardly fair," Zeke replied quickly, amazed that he wasn't going to get a straight up answer from Professor Airey of all people, he was so reliable with these things. Then there was the whole even playing field thing, which he could understand - as far as learning and year levels were concerned, but behaviour? Did some rules not apply to others??? Because THAT just wasn't fair AT ALL. He would have replied to that, but the Professor's next comment left his mouth hanging open and empty.

Say what?

Higher standard?

"........... really? Me?" he questioned, clearly not buying it.

But there was useful things being discusses, so he was going to be sure to pay close attention. No brown nosing, got it, that wasn't his style anyway... he much preferred making mess to cleaning it up, and why clean it up if it wasn't his? And gifts? Pfftttt... Professor's didn't want their junk. He was nodding now, listening, waiting for those nuggets of wisdom... and he would RATHERRRRRRRRRRRRR....

...

Zeke looked toward the cage with the... ferret thing... and then back to Professor Airey. Where was his advice?! WHERE?!

"Uuuhh, yeah, sure, no worries," he replied, standing and following after Airey. It was hard to remain focused when there was a ferret involved, he had so many OTHER questions now, but still one remained stronger than the others. "So you were saying?"

"Uuuhh, yeah, sure, no worries," he replied, standing and following after Airey. It was hard to remain focused when there was a ferret involved, he had so many OTHER questions now, but still one remained stronger than the others. "So you were saying?"

Dismissing the boy's attempt at a follow up question, because there really was nothing more to say other than life was not fair so invest in a good helmet, the professor focused on the surprised way the young man's eyes lit up just now. Was he really that surprised that professors found him talented? Were Gryffindors hanging out with Hufflepuffs too much these days and rubbing elbows with humility so much they were losing their sense of pride?

Or maybe he really did not know. He was such a young fellow.

"Without a doubt," he said, tapping his noggin with his index finger as Hershel gave another firm tug towards the door. "Come along, Mr. Zeke. Let's head outside for a bit of fresh air. I'll even let you walk the ferret if you realize how gifted a young man you are."

Escorting the Gryffindor out of his office while being partly dragged out by one over eager ferret. He wasn't able to shut the door behind him immediately, thanks to all the dragging, but managed to give his wand a wave to close it before the pair of them disappeared around the corner.

follow me; everything is all right.

It was about time the man and that kid left the office, there were things in there that needed to be eaten, things like that ferret that was now leaving the office too.

With eyes on the prize he started to make his way out of the shadows of the office. There was a fancy feast he needed to follow, a... what was this? Another tiny feast caught his attention. A feast for two, right there, on the man's desk, the very desk that he was now on top of too.

Not wasting any time he sucked up the first of the snacks then instantly spit it back out. He then moved on to the next one. Yes, this one would do just fine.

With the snack in his mouth he scurried off the desk he made his way out of the office just before the door closed on him. He would be back later to collect that ferret.

Zander was sweet really. That was the entire reason that she would have chosen to not be a prefect if it meant that he’d have kept his badge. After all the other prefects all liked Zander and that was a good thing. Still with the looks he was giving her it was clear he didn’t want her to give up her badge for him. Which was sweet but silly.

Puck nodded simply when Professor Flamsteed told her to listen. “I will be more careful with my word choice Professor,” she nodded and felt her hand tremble at the idea of writing down what made her a good leader…maybe that was the issue? Maybe she had no idea why she was put into this position but she was trying and that had to be worth something right?

If last year had taught her anything it was that…she was organized for the most part. So when Professor Flamsteed told them to write down the skills that made them good leaders she simply looked down at the parchment and squinted first. There were things of course that she was suspicious about…like the whole fact that she had tested Professor Flamsteed when he was acting like Hook and well honestly she thought he’d have thought negatively on that…but maybe that was a good thing? Not taking everything at face value and looking for confirmation on things?

Still, she would do this. It was what she had to do, even if she wanted to think about other people. Or really had to think about what other people would see in her especially Flamsteed and Headmistress Truebridge because she was only here because of them. And well, her parents…but that was a long awkward story.

Taking a quill from her bag she began to try to write down words, traits. Things that made her a good leader but nothing came at first. This was going to be hard, and interesting but hard. Once she wrote the first down though, it got easier to write them down.

SPOILER!!: the first list

What I posses:
Self-confidence
Sense of Humor in tough situations
I have a sense of integrity
I’m Matur(ing)
I’m resilient
Passionate

When she had the five things that she thought she possessed she simply looked over to Zander and squinted. What did he possess? Because they did work well together and he was kind…and she liked him as a prefect even so what were his traits? She had to think about this.

SPOILER!!: the second list

What Zander possesses:
Empathy
Conscientious
Emotional Stability
Enthusiasm
Kindness
Charismatic
He’s more confident than how he acts
Humility
Sense of Humor
Passionate
He doesn’t prescribe to the “gryffindors have to be macho” philosophy which I think is great because it means that he doesn’t do “stupid” life-threatening things to prove that he’s strong and capable.

Oh gosh. He was rubbing his temples. That was never really a good sign. Zander scooted even further back into his chair as their Head of House began to address Puck in the same agitated tone as before. Merlin. This was painful to watch. And it kept growing to be even more painful as the Astronomer continued. Them as individuals? Huh. But weren't they talking about the team? Zander was getting some mixed signals over here. He wasn't quite sure what Professor Flamsteed was wanting to hear, but apparently telling him that they'd try harder for Gryffindor wasn't the right thing... Oh.

Zander nodded his head, trying to follow along. When the parchment was slipped towards them, he glanced down to look over it, expecting some kind of contract or a set of rules.... But what he wasn't expecting was nothing at all? Uh, Professor... Your parchment is broken. There's nothing on it. He looked back up only to give the man a very confused look, which slowly shifted back to a thoughtful one as Flamsteed went on to explain. Uh. What. "Yes, Professor." Actually not quite, but it seemed like an easy enough task soooo. And it was much nicer than sitting here and getting into even more trouble. So he'd take it!

Only it wasn't actually quite as easy as he thought... As the Gryffindor took the quill in hand, he realized he actually had no idea what to write down. Uh. Furrowing his brows in deep concentration, the Gryffindor just stared at the parchment for a moment. He decided to approach the list about Puck first, even though he was instructed to do it the other way around. It was easier coming up with things to write about his CoPrefect. He could think of tons, though he only wrote the five they were instructed to. It took a little bit of thought, but only because he wanted to make sure he wrote down the best ones from the list.
SPOILER!!: Second List *does this first*

Puck Greyvson
  1. Ambitious
  2. Lots of spirit and enthusiasm
  3. Confident
  4. Creative
  5. Organised

This next set was harder. He had no idea what to write down. Maybe this was the problem? Merlin. Professor Flamsteed was really good at what he did, did he know? Zander just stared at the parchment for a bit, taking note that Puck was already a good bit down her list already. Oh sweet Merlin. And he hadn't even begun to write down his second characteristic as she had set down her quill, having finished her own two lists.
SPOILER!!: First list *writes it second* *oops*

Zander Adair
  1. Approachable
  2. Hardworking
  3. Reliable
  4. Good at encouraging people
  5. Caring

Finally he was done. Giving the two lists a final look over, he pushed them back towards his Head of House.

It was interesting watching the two prefects get to work, especially when he compared their facial expressions when they were writing about themselves and when they were writing about each other. He subconsciously began to nod his head with every quill stroke while trying his best not to stare at either of the two prefects. It was clear that neither of them really had spent much time focusing on themselves. Not too much internal searching. Therefore, the man was glad they were doing this exercise right now.

Once they were both done, he took all the parchments from them and read them over carefully. Nodding and even cracking a bit of a smile, he set the two aside where they wrote about themselves and returned the other piece back. Only instead of Mr. Adair receiving the one he had written about Miss Greyvson, he received the one she had written about him and visa versa.

"Now, what I would like you both to do is read out loud the words your co-prefect wrote about you," he instructed. "But I want you to do so like you are taking ownership of those words. Replace all 3rd person pronouns with first."

The purpose of this being that he wanted both of them to not only understand the manner in which others perceived their strengths and embrace them. Keeping everything positive and looking forward.

"Whenever you are ready."

Returning from his walk about the grounds with Hershel on his leash, Airey let him off it rather than putting her right back into the cage. He supposed he could put up with a bit of lint rolling afterwards. He did need to perform his bi-weekly cleaning of the office anyway.

Strolling over to his desk, the professor moved to give both Pebbles and Boulder pats on their heads while his attention looked towards his bookshelf for something to stimulate his mind for about an hour. Only when his hand reached for Pebbles he felt nothing but air and then the soft cushioning texture of the pillow that should have been beneath her. Stumbling, the professor's eyes widened as his brain short-circuited and needed to be rebooted. He saw Boulder there, glistening with some sort of residue on his exterior, but the vacancy beside him... All around the Astronomy professor, everything was in fast-forward while he remained motionless in the middle of it all.

Where. Was. She?

"P-Pebbles?" he whispered as he dropped to his knees to check under his desk on the off chance she had rolled off. Nothing. "Pebbles?" he called as he leaped to his feet and flung open all the drawers on his desk. "PEBBLES?" he shouted, now rummaging through his closest and everywhere else he could get his hands on.

No. He must be blind. There was no way she could just GO missing like that. She had just been here in his office. Sitting on THAT pillow.

Taking a moment to slap himself across the face a few times, he barked at himself to wake up and see clearly. He was simply allowing those suppressed emotions regarding Medea and their loss make him see things. He needed to work harder on implementing the teachings of Surak. Pressing the palms of his hands hard to his eyes so he saw black sparkles, he counted to ten and opened his eyes again.

Only when he looked back to his desk and the rest of his office ... the scene remained the same.

"PEBBLEEEEEEEEEEEEES?!"

Okay so Professsor Flamsteed seemed to smile at what they had written. That was good, and she was taking that as a good thing right? It was wasn’t it? She simply picked up the parchment and placed it on her lap after he had handed them back almost ready to ask what they were supposed to do when he continued and explained.

Oh dear god.

Zander was going to read the list she had made? She felt her cheeks heat slowly as she had called him passionate…but he was because he was avidly trying to stay a Prefect as was she now. But it was more the fact that she’d written so much.

Still, she had to read what Zander had said about her. Seeing as she was ready well, here goes. It was like jumping into water from a cliff. Sometimes you just had to close your eyes and let go.

Reading over the list she grinned. Okay, she could do this. It wasn’t awkward like his would be. “I am ambitious.” She said clearly, and made a mental note to give Zander a big hug later. “I have lots of spirit and enthusiasm” and really, maybe more like a giant box of chocolates and a hug; because obviously he deserved it for being such a good friend. “I am confident, I am creative, and I am organized.” She finished speaking and smiled over to Zander. “Thank you Zander,” she grinned. “I wouldn’t want to be anyone one else’s CoPrefect,” she added because well, it was the truth.

Zander watched Professor Flamsteed curiously, were their lists okay? Was this what the Astronomer wanted? Sometimes it was hard to tell with this man. But the subtle smile seemed to indicate that nothing they had done was blatantly wrong. So that was a good sign, for now. Zander felt much more at ease now than he had coming into the office, that's for sure. Though this exercise did require a lot of thought and that's not exactly what Zander would've wanted coming in early in the morning... But you know, can't really get everything to go the way he wanted. 'Specially not after all this tidal way stuff, apparently.

He slowly reached forward to take hold of the parchment his Professor handed back, immediately taking notice that it wasn't his handwriting? Uh, Professor... Not to criticize your methods or anything... But are you sure you don't need glasses or something? 'Cause this was definitely not-- Oh. He had meant to give them the wrong ones? Zander suddenly felt a little nervous knowing that Puck was gonna read the list he wrote for her. Though really, it probably wasn't anything she didn't already know. And before he could even glance down at the paper in his hands, she was already beginning to go through the list out loud. He gave her a small smile when she was finished, trying to let her know that he meant all that he had written. "Me neither," he smiled a bit more before turning down to the list in his hands.

Merlin. This was going to be embarrassing. He could already feel it. "I am empathetic," he began, "I am contentious," Merlin, Puck wrote a long list. "I've got emotional stability," he continued, cheeks glowing just a bit. There were definitely more than five traits written here. I'm enthusiastic," he cracked a grin at this one. "And I am kind," he chose to stop here, being that he had already read five out loud. Hopefully Professor Flamsteed wouldn't say anything about it. Though, he didn't look up right away. Instead he read down the rest of the list, only glancing back up towards the two of them when he got to the very bottom. He sent a small smile towards Puck, sending her thankful eyes whatever that meant. And then looked back towards Professor Flamsteed expectantly.

Whatever his Head of House was trying to do here... Maybe it was working, even if only a little bit.

Leaving his cup alone for now so that his full attention was on both of his prefects, Airey allowed his expression to soften as Miss Greyvson spoke. Nodding along as each one of Mr. Adair's thoughts were spoken out loud, the professor leaned forward on his desk. "Thank you, Miss Greyvson," he said as he reached to take her parchment back. "If you will allow it," he continued, not really asking but rather informing as he picked up his quill and began to scribble a few things down upon it. "I would like to add a few more to this already stellar list." And since they were running out of time and he had Astronomer Royal duties he needed to tend to soon... "You are fiercely determined. Once you decide on something, you see it through until it's accomplished. Not only that, but you are willing to stand up for others no matter the circumstances."

Passing the parchment back to the prefect, he cleared his throat and glanced over at Mr. Adair.

"I don't believe you have read everything on the parchment," he said casually, not wanting to come off as teasing the young man but wanting to instill the importance of him reading those words out loud.

Zander watched the interaction between his Head of House and CoPrefect and smiled a little—despite the fact that his face was still mildly pink—at the new additions to the list he had written for her. ‘Cause Professor Flamsteed was right about it all, of course. Especially the last point he raised. It made Zander remember that time when Puck stood up for Kevin in Charms class. Of course Kevin was quite confused by it all, but Puck was a friend to him even when they hardly knew each other.

He liked it a lot more when Flamsteed focused his attention on Puck, by the way. Yet of course nothing ever got past Airey. SIGH. This is what being a scientist does to a person, apparently. Always making observations and such. Plus, it probably didn’t help that Airey had already seen Puck’s list and therefore he KNEW that there were many more words beyond the simple five that Zander chose to read out loud.

”Oh, uh, right. I was just getting to those,” INSERT MEGABLUSH HERE. Merlin.

The Gryffindor mussed his hair and cleared his throat before turning his gaze back towards the sheet in front of him. ”I am charismatic,” he began once again. ”I’m more confident than how I act,” he wasn’t really sure whether to take that one as a compliment or not so uh… You know, there’s that. ”I’ve got humility.” But by saying that out loud… Wasn’t that kind of ironic, you know? He looked up at his astronomy Professor for some look of confirmation to keep going before turning his head back down to look at the parchment.

”I’ve got a sense of humor,” this one made him smile to himself. ”I’m passionate… And I don’t prescribe to the ‘gryffindors have to be macho’ philosophy.” Again, he wasn’t sure how he was supposed to take that one… But anyways. Was he good now, Professor?

Puck just nodded when Professor Flamsteed said he wanted to add a few more things to her list. Okay, so this was possibly going to be embarrassing right? But it wasn’t, as he spoke all she could do was well, smile. She was determined always, it was something that came naturally once she set her mind on things. “Thank you Professor Flamsteed,” she smiled softly and knew her own cheeks were at least slightly pink.

When he told Zander to keep reading she just winced. Oh gosh, she’d made some awkward things on there but all were meant in the nicest way. “Zander, I meant to say that you are confident but you don’t seem to realize how amazing you are,” she practically whispered her face reddening as she spoke. She wanted to explain that she meant everything as a good thing, because really, she didn’t like the whole ‘house label’ mentality herself.

Today, at least, Gryffindors were awkward.

"Of course," he chuckled, playing along with Mr. Adair humility for the boy's own sake.

Once the prefect had finished, Airey inhaled deeply, held it, and the slowly exhaled. The real meat of the meeting was over now, so the two prefects could relax a little. But that did not mean they were still off the hook. "Excellent," he nodded, offering the pair a polite golf clap before resting his hands back down on his desk. "I would like for you both to keep those lists, the ones about yourself, and place them somewhere in your dormitories so that each night before you go to sleep you can read them over to yourself."

Part one of their assignment.

"I also have a...shall we call it homework? Yes. I have a sort of homework assignment for you. Due by the end of term feast." Which gave them plenty of time to sort out their thoughts and write it all down. "I want each of you to write me an essay on leadership. You should cover what qualities make a good leader and and leadership styles should be included. I would also like each of you to pick an influential leader in wizarding history and write a little about them, their leadership qualities, and their particular style. Selection of your leader should be carefully thought out and be someone that particularly resonates with you. I want you to feel a connection with this person."

There was a reason for this and whether that was obvious to the prefects was unknown to the professor, but if it was not clear now then hopefully it would be in the future.

"Any questions?"

"Oh yes. Right. Of course. Please. Do...er...do come in," he mumbled as he held the door open with his one hand.

OOC: you are free to post in the office thread now :3
So Yoongi was a bit dissapointed he did not need to call the Headmistress. She was almost as good looking as he was he thought but the Gryffindor nodded when he was invited inside of the room and he entered. It looked like a nice office. Clean and it seemed comfortable to live in. "Nice office, Sir" Yoongi said as he stood near the desk and looked around. His eyes landed on the cage telephone booth and he walked towards it out of curiousity. Curious Yoongi was curious again~ "We learned about telephones in muggle studies some time ago..." but this was obviously no telephone booth. "But what's in here?"

"Any questions?"

Y'know, now that he knew his badge wasn't going to get taken away and that he wasn't in that much trouble, the Gryffindor finally relaxed a bit in his chair. His cheeks were still slightly pink, mind you, but other than that he was feeling loads better. Well loads better until he found out they had a daily task to do. What. But Zander could hardly keep track of all his homework, how was he supposed to remember to read TWO lists before bed?

Unfortunately it wasn't much of a question, so the Gryffindor just nodding. He knew very well that he had to do whatever Professor Flamsteed asked of them. They were still on thin ice and all. Plus tidal waves. Whatever that meant. So he had no choice in the matter, this was like the rebuilding phase. Maybe if they followed all of these instructions they'd gain his trust back? Maybe.

Zander wasn't even all too worried about it before any homework talk was mentioned. That got a WHUT out of him. Not an audible one, of course, but his eyes did the thing, which he realized immediately and stopped right away. Ahem. You didn't see nothin'. Just a Gryffindor in headlights and a HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT??.... They had to write an ESSAY? The worst part was that Zander couldn't even say no. He was forced to nod his head and agree. Agree to EXTRA homework. He knew being a Prefect would be hard, but he didn't know it'd be the cause of EXTRA homework. Merlin. Thank goodness OWL term was over. This would've been a nightmare on top of all that studying.

"Got it, Professor. I'll get it done." Not with a smile on his face, but he'd have it. By the end of the term feast. At least Professor Flamsteed was gonna give them an adamant amount of time. There wasn't really all too much to complain about. Except yes, he DID have one question. WHO THE HECK WAS HE SUPPOSED TO WRITE ABOUT?!?!

He shook his head no, no questions. Just the one. But he couldn't really say that out loud. Maybe he could go and talk to Sophie about it. Surely she'd have some ideas AND Professor Flamsteed never said they weren't allowed any help. So heh, y'know.... The Gryffindor turned his head to Puck, checking to see if she had any questions. 'Cause if not, were they dismissed?

Puck just sat there listening to Professor Flamsteed as he spoke. Her heart was racing, picking ever so slowly as he explained the project to them. Oh good god. An essay? On leadership.

She bit her cheek to keep from speaking out about how hard a very open essay would be. Why not limit them to just muggle leaders? Because that’d be well not as hard well it might be hard but really the open-ended-ness of it all was just making her nervous that he wouldn’t like her essay.

Turning her attention to Zander she just gave him a look, her eyes wide with a sort of shock. She then turned back to Professor Flamsteed and smiled nervously, “Thanks Professor Flamsteed for this…opportunity” she smiled, “and you have no questions from me.” She informed nervously more because of the paper than anything.

Essays were not fun.

But she was also lazy.

He could see some fear and discomfort in both their eyes, but that was a good thing. After all, this was far more than just an essay. It was an exercise, down to the methodology they used in their research and the methodology of writing the essay. Perhaps those two bits were actually the most important. It was, as muggles often said, it is not the destination but the journey.

Yeah, that look Puck was wearing... Pretty familiar. Especially because he gave her the same one before turning back to his Head of House. 'Cause as much as Zander Adair loved doing extra homework....

But he owed Professor Flamsteed. And he knew it. Especially since, y'know, tidal waves and such.

As the Sixth Year got out of his seat, he gave the Astronomy Professor a solemn nod. "Thanks, Professor," not for the extra homework, but for not firing them as Prefects. That could've been an alternate result of this meeting and Zander knew it. So really, deep down (really, really, REALLY deep down) he knew he ought to be thankful. And even hough Flammy's methods were always, erm, less than normal... There was usually some sort of desired end result. The man was mad, but there was a method to it. Just why'd it have to include an extra essay????

Ahem.

He approached the door and turned the handle, holding it open for Puck to go through before going through it himself. Bye sir, thanks for the homework.

"Oh? And what all did Meri-ber---ahem, I mean Professor Moxley teach you about them?"
……………….What was he singing about? Why wouldn’t he call him sir? It was appro…oooh!

Realisiation dawned on the teenager as he turned away from the empty cage and looked at the Professor. “Ah sorry, I forgot about that” he answered calmly with his hands behind his back. He didn’t look like he was embarrassed or nervous, but if one could look behind his back they would see that he was playing with his fingers. “It’s hard being new…all these new rules..” and some even ridiculous ones..

“Hershel? …what kind of animal is that?” he asked, not thinking about that it could be a name for an animal. While the Professor was busy levitating the box of rocks towards his desk, Yoongi ignored him and looked back at the cage, examining it. “I don’t see any animal though..was it taken as well? I heard about the pets disappearing all over, do you know who's behind it?” Luckily he did not have any pets. He wanted a turtle but it was too expensive.

The fifth year Gryffindor caught the near name slip and grinned but did not say anything else about it. Instead, he walked towards the box of rocks and looked at them without picking one up. It would be rude to do so. “Well, muggles shout at each other in tin cans with a string attached to them. Weird huh? And there was something about electally wires and stuff” he shrugged. And yes, he was fully aware that he was a muggle born himself but having been adopted by a pureblooded family he wasn’t exactly raised like a muggle. “Did you know stones have energies?” he asked in return. Could he pick one up now?

As the Sixth Year got out of his seat, he gave the Astronomy Professor a solemn nod. [B
"Thanks, Professor,"[/B] not for the extra homework, but for not firing them as Prefects.

Offering the prefect nothing more than a polite nod of the head, Airey chuckled as he held the door open for Puck. In a good way, for the record.

And he was looking forward to your essay, Mr. Adair.
SPOILER!!: Yoongi

Dismissing the Gryffindor's concerns with a playful wave of his hand, no need to dwell on the learning curve as the young man would get there on his own eventually, the astronomer gave Hershel's cage a fleeting look before responding. "My ferret," he explained, rubbing the back of his neck anxiously. One that he may not bring back to Hogwarts and just let it stay at home from now on. Hershel would probably enjoy the grounds at home much more than being cooped up in his office or risk being eaten by something here at Hogwarts. "I do not," he lamenting, shaking his head as the box of rocks gently landed on his desk. "But I believe it is overdue to hold a bit a meeting in the common room about keeping pets somewhere safe at all times. I heard Hufflepuff house has been hit especially hard."

Ironic that they were near the kitchens.

"Maybe the house elves aren't telling us something," he joked nervously to try and ease the tension. Although it may not have been completely obvious that he WAS joking. "Mmmm, kneazle bacon on the menu and roasted owl with mashed potatoes and gravy. Suppose toad legs could be a substitute for frog...not that I've ever eaten that..."

Airey stopped himself and glanced back nervously towards the Gryffindor, clearing his throat.

"Sooooooooooo....about that rock," he chirped with a forced grin plastered across his face as he pat the side of the box.

Ignoring the stones having energies comment. Not interested.
