The black lake stretches for some distance along the shores of Hogwart's Castle and is home to the school's own Giant Squid. Some say if you stand out here long enough yelling his name you might catch a sighting of him but some may be lying and you'll possibly end up with a sore throat but no squid to show for it.
Along the edge of the lake is a small swimming dock for the adventurous who don't think walking into the water is a big enough entrance. By the dock are small boats that can be taken out for a lovely afternoon of sailing--after you've gotten the Groundkeeper's permission. Be sure to wear the life vests and no pushing!
There are also several trees by the lake, one with a hole and a hollow inside filled with books that have been left there over time. If you take one, be sure to place one in exchange to keep the system alive.

LALALALALA... it was early enough to do this, right? Or well more to the point, it wasn't too LATE to start it, right? RIGHT? Zeke had gone to collect the materials, and was distracted on his way down here by the promise of food... so understandable he had prioritised his stomach over measuring tides. But now that he was here, flag sticks and ruler and all.
Zeke set his things on the shore and sat himself down to do his prep work. First he started by measuring his flag stick because he needed to know how deep to set it and how much space there still was for the tide to rise. Taking a black marker, he etched out lines along the post to indicate units of measurement by inches. Once that was done, Zeke let it dry and using his wand cast the hot-air charm on it so that the ink would be absorbed and dry out quicker - making it more resistant to water and unlikely to smudge or fade or wash off completely. Using the marker, he wrote his name on his flag too, for good measure.
But where to put it? He didn't want to put it too close to shore, because if the tide went out then it would be infinitely harder to measure than if the tide increased, so he needed to place it IN in the water. Somewhere that it had room to move either way.
...
Taking his shoes and socks off, Zeke rolled up the bottom of his pants as high as they would go. Despite the nippy Scottish air, he pulled his jumper and shirt up and over his head and set those on top of his shoes. He didn't want to waste time with drying, and he would need to get his arms wet. Once he was ready, then he took a few paces into the water from its edge at the shore. Flag-stake in hand, Zeke decided on a spot and with his fingers indicating the mark of two inches from the bottom of the stake, he bent low and started shoving it into the soft sandy-semi-clayish soil beneath the water. The reason for doing this was so that he would have ten inches to spare for the tide. With the flag stuck in, Zeke retracted his arm and took the few paces back to shore to put his clothes back on.
This was easy enough.
Notebook out, Zeke recorded his progress.
SPOILER!!: Notes
Monday
9:45am
Flagpost (12 inches); current tide reaches 8 inches; flag post inserted 2 inches below ground; actual tide height is 6 inches. Positioned two paces from shoreline. Tide seems low-ish.
So apparently now he had to wait a very precise 6 hours, 12 minutes and 30 seconds... fascinating, why so long? Was that something he needed to know? Was it covered in class? Meh.
Zeke rolled down his pants, put his shoes back on and headed back up to the castle, classes were still waiting for him, he'd be back after.

During her free period, after lunch, Zhenya hurried back down to the black lake to check on her flag. She brought her ruler and another flag with her and the marker to check where things were going. She was curious to see what the tide was doing tomorrow morning at 7am, whether it would be at the exact place her flag was pushed into the lake bed, or if it was higher or lower. She wasn't sure exactly what time did to the tides, and how subtle the changes were. She was wearing her full uniform now, but had decided to bring her wellington boots down with her. She could see the bottom of her flag pole had been covered at least a little with the water, so obviously the tide had changed. She took her shoes off at the driest section she could find and slipped her feet into the boots, removed her robe and rolled her skirt up a little, even though it was above the line of the wellington boots anyway. She didn't wan to have to change, but it didn't look like the tie was even close to the top of the boots. She wrote her name on the second flag, and wrote Day 1 PM on it as well. She walked to where the tide was currently and stuck the flag into the lake bed. There wasn't much difference between the two. She walked a few steps to the first flag and wrote Day 1 AM underneath her name, as she had forgotten to earlier.
To measure the tide, she put the ruler against the bottom of the flag, underneath the water, and took the measurement that was in line with the level of water. It was 2.9 inches. That wasn't much, was it? But it was a lake, and not the ocean. She did a line on her flag pole to indicate what the first reading was, and wrote 1 - PM on it. That told her that it was the first day, and the PM reading. She didn't need to do a 1 - AM on it, as that was just the line against the lake bed. She quickly jogged back to her things and wrote the measurement down on her log sheet just in case she forgot it. Which she probably would have. Next she had to measure the distance between the two flags. It was 15 inches. She looked back over the water and saw that the gradient of the rise of the bed wasn't much. So there was 15 inches of water between the two flags, but that water was actually really shallow. Made sense in her head. She jogged back and put it into her log book, collected all her things and ran back up to the castle to analyse her findings and write about them in her parchment. Too cold to do it out here.
SPOILER!!: Log Day 1
Day One - 0700
Tide looks low, have put flag in lake bed at start of tide.
Day One - 1315
Tide had risen 15 inches up the lake bed, but the water had risen 2.9 inches, as measured from AM flag with ruler and marker, within 6 hours and 15 minutes.

9 am. Leah walked down to the Black Lake, yaaawning. This was WAY too early for her, but she would not be able to get her Astronomy Homework completed if she was late. She rubbed her eyes with one hand as she pulled her robes closer with the other. Merlin it was COLD. And it was only October.
She placed her log parchment and the Muggle ruler and bright orange flag she picked up outside Professor Flamsteed's office EVEN earlier this morning onto the ground next to her. The Hufflepuff's name was already written on the flag so that nobody else could take it. So, where was she supposed to stick it in?
Probably someplace where measurements could be easily done. That meant going deeper into the water. Leah was not very happy about that idea, but she did it anyway. She walked in, every step becoming heavier and heavier. Using her Muggle ruler, she measured exactly one foot from the shore where she began and stuck her flag in, pushing it some more to make sure that it was extra stable.
Then she did some measurements. This Muggle ruler thing was amazing, by the way.
SPOILER!!: log parchment
Day 1
9:30 am
I placed my flag 1 foot away from the shore. The flag now measures 3 feet 8 inches, so there is about 4 inches covered by the sand. The current tide is 5 inches high. Also, it is REALLY cold.
As soon as she was out of the water, Leah used the Hot-Air Charm to dry herself. She had to be back approximately 6 hours and 12.5 minutes later. With a glance at her watch, she packed her things up and made her way up to the castle.

The next day, Zhenya awoke early. She almost rolled over and went back to sleep but then she remembered she had to get up and check the lake. So there she was at 0700. By the lake. Freezing! She had thrown on her uniform, as she had to get back upstairs to have breakfast before an early lesson, but she wore her wellingtons. Good ol' wellies. She yawned, blinking against the cold and sleep. She had a marker and ruler. Just the two flags would do for her little analysis. She stood a few feet away from her two flags, once she had seen which ones were hers. She looked out to them and saw that the tide was low. She would need to get closer to have a better look, but she was fairly certain the tide was slightly higher on the first flag. Which meant that, for some reason, the tide was slightly higher at this time than it was exactly 24 hours earlier. That was odd. Well, to her it was. Maybe that was normal. She put her log on the lake bed and walked out to where her first flag was. This flag was her AM flag, and it had one marking on it already to signify the tide from the PM reading. She put her ruler up against it and measured a quarter of an inch. That was… not much. Not much at all. But still… was it significant for 24 hour difference? Who knew… well, actually PRofessor Flamsteed probably. She did a measurement on her flag to say 2 - AM. She measured the distance up the lake bed from the first flag to see how far the tide had come up the bed. It was about… two inches. She raised her eyebrows. That was actually pretty far. Two whole inches more of tide than the previous day at the SAME time.
She walked back to her parchment and wrote it in;

"But...if they remember good things wouldn't that make them miss you more?" Obviously not understanding. He frowned even more confused, "How is it not the same? What's the difference?" She knew so much more than he did it seemed. Like how did she know so much more. Different magic...stars and stuff. He felt under prepared.
"I think they just want us to think they're right all the time." Which was silly really, but it was okay, if it made them feel better. She looked up from the little flower when he asked her something. "Which stuff?" She wouldn't mind teaching him anything, but which did he want to know?
"No because it will make them happy and they'll just be excited to see me again and it'll be okay." she said, picking up a brownish coloured feather from the floor and tucking it behind her ear. "Just different. It's not the same kind of wand waving spells and things like we do here, it's to do with nature instead." And spirits and things, it wasn't easy to explain. "It's what we do at home."
Margo was just as happy to see him it seemed. Who could blame her? He was awesome! Haha. We are kidding about that but he did have his moments of awesomeness.
Oh, yeah. Margo still had some fear when it came to the water. But it was solely that, right? Not anything relating to the Kraken as the younger Puffer referred to it? Not wanting to pressure her into going closer, the sixth year jogged over. "Don't you want to see if we can spot Bart again?'' he asked, bouncing on the soles of his feet. But hey! At least Margo had come a bit closer to the edge even though she wasn't quite there as yet. "Classes have been GREAT! It's awesome to be back, isn't it?"
But enough about him and his bubbly feelings. "How are YOU, Margo? What did you do after the field trip? Was everyone good to you?" By 'everyone' he meant her father and brother.
Whew!!! Adi had come back from the dark side. And by the dark side she might the waters edge! The tightness that was in her chest started to ease a little and with Adi by her side she was able to take just a couple more steps closer to the water. She was still about 5 feet from the water, but it was better than last year when she wouldn't have even set foot on the beach.
"Classes have been okay." Margo admitted, she had seemed a little distance from the learning portion of Hogwarts this year so far, she was trying really she was, but there was some sort of mental block about it all for her this year. "The field trip was a blast!" Margo added thinking it was also he way to get away from her family for a while. After they had officialy found out that Marcus wasn't going to be attending Hogwarts her father resented her even more, for whatever reason. "Things went okay. You'd think with my mom being a witch that my dad wouldn't hate magic so much, but he was pretty angry that I was the only one accepted into Hogwarts, and now he seems like I shouldn't be going at all. I don't know what his problem is!" Ugh, Margo had had that sitting on her chest all summer, she was glad to finally have said it out loud.
"But enough about me!!! How's AJ?" That was her name right? Ugh, Margo felt awful now that she couldn't really remember Adi's girlfriend's name. She had only met her a handful of times after all.
It wasn't the prettiest day, but at least it wasn't raining yet as the heavy clouds threatened to do. Tora hoped that if it was going to start raining she would have a friend or fellow Ravvie to commiserate with. Before heading down to the lake she had made a PSA announcement telling everyone that she was going to do her Astronomy homework and that anyone who wanted to come would be welcome. Appreciated.
Glancing dubiously at the sky Tora sighed and pulled out the muggle ruler she would use to measure. It was then that she realized that in order to do any real measuring she would have to wade into the water. "Billywog rot." she cursed under her breath, took off her shoes and waded in. Seriously, if she was going to get wet anyway why doesn't it just rain?

SIX AM, yo!
Adi never had problems getting up THAT early (unless he was realllly tired) and today was one of those days where he was obviously NOT. With the cold not bothering him much and with a flag and ruler stick out of the back pockets of his jeans, he jogged towards the Lake. It was a good day to jog. Hehe.
He paused at the water's edge when he arrived, looking out at the calm lake and wondering how much of the water he should go into to get started on the Astronomy homework. Hmmm.

Adi had not missed the relief Margo felt when he came away from the water. She positively RADIATED that emotion but she did take a few more steps towards the lake so Adi didn't push her to go any further. He would let her take it one step at a time. "Looking for your friend the Squid?" he asked. Hehe. Adi would like to think that Bartholomew was one of Margo's first creature friends.
"Great! Any spell giving you a difficult time that you need a little coaching with?'' Margo did know she could ALWAYS ask him for help. She had until next term to bombard him with questions and stuff. "Yep, it was. Diving in the water was the best part.'' The older Hufflepuff looked at his friend. He could not believe he hadn't asked this before. He guessed he had been so caught up with everything else during the trip that he forgot. "Did you dive in?'' Maybe Margo had and it was only the Black Lake she had misgivings about.
O__O WHAT?!
"You're right where you're supposed to be,'' Adi stated firmly. How could her father not want her to stay at Hogwarts? "Your mother... she'll stick up for you, right? She'll let you continue to attend Hogwarts?
Nope, not enough about Margo. Adi would get back to that topic later. But the subject that Margo had brought up had him feeling happier. "She's alright. She's probably doing something crazy right now.'' That girl was unpredictable at times. Hehe.
"I think they just want us to think they're right all the time." Which was silly really, but it was okay, if it made them feel better. She looked up from the little flower when he asked her something. "Which stuff?" She wouldn't mind teaching him anything, but which did he want to know?

Chris nodded and continued fiddling with the guitar enough that it would sound good playing out here. "Probably right. Because if we knew they were wrong we would undermine their authority of course," he said with a laugh. "The nature magic stuff. Can you teach it to me?"
He listened to her and watched as she picked up a feather and put it behind her ear. "Well as long as it'll work." He smiled at her and started strumming the guitar. He started singing quietly so no one would overhear as he played with a smile.

Undermiiiine. Rusty wasn't entirely sure what that word meant, so she just nodded at her friend. He was probably right anyway - he seemed pretty smart, so she would just trust him. "Of COURSE I can teach you! You know, Halloween is coming up, and that's kind of a big time for the nature stuff. We could even do some later when it gets dark if you like." She always preferred life when it was dark outside. She was a night person.
Rusty had faith that it would work, so she didn't need to worry about that. She wiggled her bare toes in the grass as she continued to look around, but paused to watch her friend as he started playing... then she took a few steps closer to listen better. Wow. That was so nice! She listened for a minute, then started to dance a bit. She loved dancing, so she just did so whenever she felt like it. And outside with a friend playing music was the perfect time for it!

Day one, afternoon. Zhenya had finished her previous lesson, had quickly ran down to her dorm room to retrieve her tools, quickly grabbed some lunch to have on the go, and was here. Again. BRR. She wrapped her scarf around her a bit tighter. It was quite a frosty afternoon, it felt like. She quickly ate the rest of her lunch, took off her school shoes and slipped her stockinged feet into the Wellingtons, then picked up her ruler and marker. Her log sheet was on the lake bed, where it was dry.
She walked out to the first flag, but half way there she slipped and fell… INTO the lake. She squealed as the cold water spread over her uniform, freezing against her skin. Gasping, she peeled herself up to standing. She looked around and saw that the flag she was walking towards wasn't actually HERS. She made a frustrated grunt and turned to the left and saw another flag. What had happened? She realised as she walked back UP to the dry lake bed that there was a divot in the lake bed. Sort of like a step. She hadn't seen it because it was under water. GRR!
Finally there was her own flag. She sighed and bent down to measure how high the tide was first. The ruler measured 2.7 inches. She made a line and wrote DAY 2 - PM on the flag. That was good. Then she quickly walked up to her log and wrote that down. She was even more cold now, and would have to go back up to the castle and change her uniform before her next class. That was unfortunate. What's more, she hadn't brought a towel or anything. She walked back down to where her two flags were. The tide wasn't quite reaching the second flag. She measured it and got a reading of 13.6 inches. She went back to her log and wrote that down, then made a quick entry into her log. But she was freezing and wet. She wished she had known the incantation for the hot-air charm. But she didn't. She didn't want to go singeing off her eyebrows either, so she decided not to try.
SPOILER!!: Log - Day 1+2
Day One - 0700
Tide looks low, have put flag in lake bed at start of tide.
Day One - 1315
Tide had risen 15 inches up the lake bed, but the water had risen 2.9 inches, as measured from AM flag with ruler and marker, within 6 hours and 15 minutes.
Day Two - 0700
Tide was low, but higher than day 1 AM tide at exact same time. Tide was a quarter of an inch HIGHER than it was yesterday, and it had come up the lake bed 2 inches.
Day Two - 1312
Tide has risen higher than the mornings of day one and two, but not as high as the tide on the afternoon of day one. The tide measured 2.7 inches high, which is 0.2 inches lower than the afternoon reading on the first day. The tide has risen 13.6 inches up the lake bed, which is 1.2 inches less than yesterday afternoon. Furthermore, in within 6 hours and 12 minutes, the tide has risen 2.5 inches since this morning, and had come up the lake bed 11.6 inches since this morning.
She had a think about that on the way back to the castle. They were only subtle differences, but could those three minutes have made much of a difference? Surely not, considering both morning readings were done at exactly 0700 and were different. It must be that the moon phase was changing ever so slightly over the days, which happens of course. But perhaps even between two days of a moon phase, its pull of the tide is changed too. Interesting...

Flag and other supplies in hand, Lux slowly made the trek down to the lake so that she could start on her Astronomy homework. It was a good thing that she had both eaten breakfast beforehand, and worn rain boots because it would suck if she got either hungry or wet. Unfortunately she didn't have shorts on, however, as her legs would have gotten too cold in the chilly autumn weather.
Reaching the shoreline, the redhead paused both in order to roll up her pant legs and to figure out where she wanted to place her flag. It was probably a good idea to position it in the water because tides increased and decreased. Wading a little past the shore, she stopped when she was a few feet from dry ground. This was as good a place as any for her to stick the flag.
Smiling, she set it firmly into the ground, driving it in a good three inches. This way it wouldn't easily be knocked over. Pleased with her work, she took a black marker out of her bag and wrote 'LUX CARRINGTON' in big letters so that no one could confuse her flag with theirs. That sorted, there was only one thing left to do and that was to record the tide level. Even though there wasn't much going on right now, it was still important to record the information and why not start now.
With a ruler, she measured up to where the water ended and recorded the information into her notes:

8:30 a.m.
Placed flag 3'' into the ground a few feet from the shoreline. Water level measured at 6'' which means a relatively low tide.
Okay, now she just needed to come back later at a very particular time and do another measurement. Lux wasn't sure why it really mattered, but shrugged it off and headed back to the castle.

Ugh. How annoying, the wood ruler she had grabbed from Professor Airey's classroom was warped from some previous water use, probably from this very assignment some other year and was rendered completely useless. She would have to go all the way up to the Astronomy Tower and get another one if she wanted her readings to be remotely accurate. She twisted around to throw the ruler on the bank when she heard her name. Yelled. "AAAAH" she gave a yell of her own as she slipped and fell with a great splash into the knee high water. She crawled out, coming to her feet just in front of her dorm mate. "Come to join me? I hope you brought a good ruler. She vaguely wondered if she could have just fixed it with a reparo spell, but what was the fun in that?
"Thanks to you, I don't have to worry about the rain," Tora gave Eden a big grin came towards the other Ravenclaw, arm wide for a hug. Hehe.

Eden almost diiiiied of laughter as Tora kind of fell into the water--oops. She hadn't meant to scare her, just catch her attention! That was all! But it was still funny, and she had to cover her mouth so she could compose herself.
"Sooooorry, Tora..." she said as she approached closer. "And..yeah..I got the little flags to mark our area..and I think a ruler..." she slipped off her shoes and her socks and waded into the water. "AH. IT'S KINDA' COLD." She shivered. Eeeeeeee.
Aaaand she dug through her back, chuckling when Tora offered her a hug. Eden didn't mind, she hugged back and just laughed. "Oh I grabbed an extra ruler, look at THAT." It was like she had foreseen this...that Tora would need one. "And I got three flags..just in case." She pulled out one and eyed the water they were standing it. "Pick a spot to measure and stick this in--" she handed Tora a flag. Eden herself suck a flag right in front of herself, and glanced at the sky. "We better hurry before it rains.."

Hmmm.
See. Toby had figured, if he was up and running around the lake every morning anyway, why not incorporate the Astronomy homework into that, and sort of deal with two things at once? Which was whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy he'd brought the flag and stuff along. It was a pain to carry everything when running, especially the flag that was only about a foot shorter than he was, but he muddled on through.
He slowed to a halt on his way back around the lake (why had he not stopped to do the flag stuff earlier? the world may never know), having spotted a familiar figure from a short distance away. Adi, the prefect from the year below.
"Adi," said Toby, slightly out of breath from his intense run, as he walked the last few steps to close the distance. "Astronomy homework?" Yeeeees? 'Cause Toby had his flag TOO. Maybe he'd stop and set his up somewhere near here as well.

Three, four feet off of the shore line, hmmm? Would that be sufficient enough for him to stick the flag in the sand water? Probably. Adi decided he would make up his mind when he got there. But first, he needed to roll up his jeans around his feet. Of course he could always leave it and just wade out like that but he figured the extra weight of water soaked pants would hamper him a bit. So, he bent to adjust those jeans just as he heard the voice of his fellow Puff.
"Heya, Toby! Morning!'' A cheery grin for you. "Yup! Got my flag and everything.'' You know the good thing about meeting a Hufflepuff so early in the morning? They are not likely to be grumpy. Tobias looked bouncy and ready to go! Maybe he was here to do the homework too.
Adi retrieved his flag on which his name was already written. "Come on! Let's go do this!'' Waaaah? Give Tobias a chance to catch his breath, Adi! But the younger boy was already taking off towards the Lake.
...............
Brrr! It was cold, yo! Did he care? Nope! "I reckon four feet out is enough,'' Adi called to Tobias and stuck his flag in the soft bed of sand of the Lake. Yeaaaah, it seemed enough for him. So now he just measured from his flag to the edge of the water? Was that it? It was only logical.
Using the ruler he had gotten from Flamsteed's office, he did just that. "Three and a half inches,'' Adi announced to Tobias after he was done. "What does yours say?" Tobias would have a different reading, yes? It all depended on how far out he stuck the flag.
As he waited on the other dude, Adi shifted his weight from one foot to the other as he got started on his log.

Periodically checking her watch every once in a while, Lux spent the next few hours in classes and hanging around the castle. Finally after what felt like forever, it was time to make her way to the lake. She had waited 6 hours and 12.5 minutes and was curious to see what her new reading would show.
Holding her rain boots, she made her way to the shoreline of the lake. Sitting down, she removed her shoes and put on her boots. Her pant legs were rolled, and once she stood, she brushed off any grass or dirt that had gotten onto her clothes. She needed to find her flag, and yep it wasn't hard to spot because her name was written on it in big letters.
Ruler in hand, she waded out into the water and did another measurement against the pole. It seemed that the water level had risen a little, but not too much. She had a feeling that would be the case with each of her observations during the week. Unless Bartholomew Henry was really active or something, there would be no reason for high tides.
Wading back to the shore, Lux switched the rain boots for her shoes and then pulled her notebook out of her bag. right below her first set of notes she placed her next observations.
SPOILER!!: Notes
Monday
8:30 a.m.
Placed flag 3'' into the ground a few feet from the shoreline. Water level measured at 6'' which means a relatively low tide.
Monday
2:42 p.m.
Checked water level exactly 6 hours and 12.5 minutes after first recording. Water level is still relatively low, increasing by .25''. Water is as calm as it was during the first recording.
Pleased with her results, Lux grabbed her rain boots then made her way back to the castle so that she could get something to eat from the kitchen.

Aditya Rehman Astronomy Homework- Tide Log Day One: 6:00
It's a great morning for a wade out into the Lake and get started on homework. The Flag was stuck 4 feet off shore and the water measures three and a half inches.
WHEW. This was exhilarating. Something about running on a cool October morning was that extra bit invigorating. Merlin knew, trying to run on a hot summers day could make someone sluggish. Maybe. Sorta. Okay, so... maybe not Toby. ANYWAY. Point was, he was away, and ready to go, and so was his brain.
Oh, OH. And Adi was already off. He was an eager badger, wasn't he. Toby followed him right on into the lake, not needing to roll any trouser legs up (because running shorts) and not bothering to remove his shoes (because idiot). And... oh. OH. Yes. It was... really quite cold. Though Toby had experience of jumping into this lake fully clothed in, uh... November. So. No big.
"So..." he called to Adi, now looking around for him and seeing that he'd accidentally gone waaaaay further out than him, having not heard his earlier comment. Oops. So there stood Adi in a couple of inches of water, and here was Toby, up to about mid-thigh. Well, the flags were tall, may as well make use of that, right?. "How do we do this? Like... how do we measure the depth? Stick it in, and THEN measure? Take it back out to measure? Mark the water level on the flag and then... measure the difference later?" Toby was asking these questions, but all the while he was already starting the process, not really waiting for answers.
Just thinking out loud, y'know.
Okay so, flag went into the water, the first step was easy. So now he could mark the water level and take it back out and measure ooooor... no, it'd be easier to just stick it into the floor and then line up the huge ruler next to it. So that's what Toby did. Luckily the floor of the lake was squishy enough to stick things into, but firm enough to hold. Once Toby was sure that the flag that bore his name on was stuck into the ground deep enough that it wouldn't fall over, he lined up the long ruler RIGHT next to the flag pole, with the end of THAT (the end with the zero value) down at the floor end.
Toby paused now, trying to keep as still as he could, and not disturb the water too much so he could get an accurate measurement. When the lake was as still as he was going to get, he noted where on the ruler the water level was, marked it with his thumb just for good measure (in case he forgot... which was likely) and turned back towards the sure, bringing the rule with him and leaving the flag where it stood to mark his place.
And Adi was speaking.
"Oh, uh..." Toby slowed a little as he waded out, and held up the ruler to double check the measurement. "Two feet... exactly, wow." WHAT were the CHANCES of THAT? Pretty amazing, right? And super convenient for later calculations. The Hufflepuff eyed his prefect as he finally made it out of the lake. "How about you?"
Log. Right. Yes. He should... do that. Soon. He'd set down his parchment and stuff somewhere around here...

After a long day of classes Isabelle was sure that she deserved a few moments peace in front of the lake. Gosh it's windy, she thought as she pulled out a hair tie and pulled back her icy blonde hair. Sitting down in front of the lake she sighed, and looked out towards the water. It was nice to finally be able to relax.

Of course Adi had done his own thing when it came to the this homework. Well, at least in the way he had interpreted it. "Uhhh, I measured from flag to the water edge.'' Wasn't that what they were supposed to do? Tobias was doing something different (and logical as well). "Is that the REAL way we're supposed to do it? I think I interpreted things incorrectly.'' Besides, measuring from the flag was MUCH easier than measuring FROM the flag TO the edge of the water.
"Don't mind me, Toby. I'm just going to copy you.'' Hehe. Anyway, Adi quickly did his own measurement again but this time shamelessly copying Toby. But was it really copying when that just may be the correct way of doing things, hmm?
"Okaaaaay, I think I got it right this time,'' he called to the seventh year. "Three inches. Hang on, let me double check.'' Double checking, double checking... "Yep! Three inches.'' Woot! Not much of a difference from the first one. All he needed to do now was to adjust the log which he would do after getting out of this water. It was starting to get really cold, yo! "So I think we're done here for this morning? Meet you back in about twelve and a half hours, then?'' Because Adi was super curious to know what Toby's latest measurement would be. FASCINATING stuff this was!

"I'm a pretty good swimmer, but I don't swim in the lake. I've talked to the squid before though!" That had been an awesome experience and she still wasn't sure how Bart managed to get him to come to the surface. Maybe she would ask him later, but sometimes it was awkward when he was with Cinna. Lux felt like she was always mad at her for something or another. "Oh, my term is good so far! I'm just hoping nothing weird or dangerous happens." That would be crazy. But she had her friends and the two-way mirrors so that she could talk to Bay. Only two terms to get through then she'd be free.
Yes, she could laugh, it had been funny. "I was out on the boat with Le... Mr. Kitridge my very first term here and I leaned over too far and whelp there I went." Chuckling more as she looked at the lake remembering that first experience with the librarian. "He was very sweet, he jumped in after me. You students are very lucky to have such caring adults around." He had put himself in danger for them that very term. That was a memory she'd like to forget.
The squid, Cassie smiled at the thought of Bartholomew. "Well he tends to like to come up to the surface early in the morning or in the evening if I remember correctly." Usually when there were less students most likely. Though he was a very social squid, "I bet if you keep your eyes open you will see him sooner or later." She had seen him a few times, but if she really thought of it, it had been awhile.
"Well that makes two of us. I think I've had my fill of strange things." She had really thought last term was going to be different, but then that poor students and it happened so fast that she hadn't a chance to sense something. Her eyes shifted to the lake again, "I really don't blame you for not swimming in there. There are many creatures that we hardly ever see at the surface." It was certainly enough to keep her out of it.
Puck leaned against a tree by the water’s edge as she waited. She didn’t know who exactly was joining her but she’d asked friends at least. Come. Let’s do things by the lake…like check the water levels and be absolutely utterly science-y.
Yep.
Those kind of things. She had a little box full of rulers, and the orange marker flags next to her foot as she glanced around waiting patiently. This was going to be interesting wasn’t it? Tides…the moon was good with this yeah? The moon was always beautiful wasn’t it?
