The Hogwarts staff are already seated when you enter the feast. Their traditional place is at a long table on a raised dais at the back of the Great Hall, with the usual Hogwarts crest hanging behind them and looking particularly nice tonight.
Feel free to come up and give your greetings to the School staff after the Headmistress has given her traditional speech. Remember your manners, children. Your professors like to have a quiet dinner too.
It didn't surprise him to find everyone already seated at the table by the time he arrived. He could have been here sooner but there was a little incident by the boats that needed sorting and the Scottsman had to be sure he didn't lose any of the little ones. Just think, they would dock his pay and where would the man be without his galleons?
Maintaining this hair didn't come cheap.
"Good evenin' everyone. Ladies." Scott tried to sound as enthused as possible about being here, despite that subtle feeling of panic and the hives he was sure had taken over his skin from being here this long. Nothing would go wrong. He had gotten the Headmitress' guarantee on that one.
"Promisin' set 'o First Years, from wha' I've been seein'." He commented, watching one after the other step up to be sorted.
"Tha' one decided he could hit the bottom 'o the lake an' back before we docked--to see the squid I reck'n." He pointed to the one that was currently seated. "An' tha' little Lass has a pair' o' lungs on her like nothin' else." How soon would the food be here? The man was starving.
Once she had sat down she looked towards the Sabel that now sat beside her. “Cassiopeia Morgan Divination. Everyone calls me Cassie.” She beamed at him. She knew his name from a memo of new staff, but he probably didn’t know who she was. “Are you really an Auror? That seems so exciting, what made you come to be a professor?” She snapped happily that he was here though, she liked meeting new people.
Well then, Cassie certainly got a vibe from the headmistress and her only murmur of a hello. Maybe she had other things on her mind or something was going on between her and the new professor that she could only focus on him and not chat with the rest. Either way she felt in the way so she got up from the table and moved towards others to greet them before the students came in.

Despite how curious he was for the 'Deputy's' answers, Sabel's attention was drawn back to the Headmistress, and the woman beside him. He made a mental note that perhaps a more private discussion was needed with the Hogwarts Head and returned a smile and a nod her way. The second note was to the woman sitting beside him, the one with hair as bright as her personality. It was a quick decision to make. He liked her so far. Friendly and cheery.
"Cassie then." He nodded with a warm smile of his own that was tinged with only a faint hint of surprise. So, she knew what his previous job was, as did the man beside him. He supposed it made sense, even though it made him shift somewhat uncomfortably in his chair. Secrets around his job had become so normal, he'd forgotten what it was like to be in a place with such open conversation.
"I am, or was. For just over a decade." He felt old. A glance down the table to the end Professor with the cane reminded him to stifle any such sentiments. "As for why I'm here...I've always enjoyed teaching and there are better prospects on the whole here, than at the Ministry." For life, safety, family. Just all around, better. Plus, teaching kids sure beat running after dangerous, dark criminals. Maybe?
His eyes slipped to the students as they began filing in, the knots of nerves returning. Or maybe the former was easier? Time would certainly tell.
SPOILER!!: Maddox and Airey and...the rocks

"Hey Maddox!" Airey waved, making doubly sure to get the man's attention. He could hear him whispering about something to the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, even thought he had heard his name mentioned once or twice...but it was too hard to tell over the sound of students now filing in. Taking a piece of parchment off the top of the box, he quickly folded it up into a paper airplane and sent it flying towards the Charms professor's head. Hopefully Maddox wouldn't be so lazy as to allow it to poke him in the eye or something. They had been working most of the afternoon in the Gryffindor common room getting ready for post feast activities. "You wanna adopt one? You won't regret it if you dooooooooooo!"
There was an eager grin from the Astronomy professor before he turned his attention towards the Sorting. HUZZAH! HIS FAVORITE PART! Thus, he was giving those students his undivided attention.

From the corner of his eyes he did catch Leo's smile and wave. Thankfully he wasn't so engrossed in his act that he'd missed it and the man did give a wave back. They had things to discuss later on. Interesting enough, Cassie chose to vacate her seat, without so much as a 'hello' when he had arrived. He'd have thought more of it, if his attention hadn't immediately been pulled back to this Dakest fellow.
"I'm glad you've gotten some hints on the matter..." He fixed his gaze on Airey once more, contemplating how best to proceeed. What were they doing as heads about this situation?
"Being a former enforcer of the law, I trust you appreciate the delicate nature of the situation. Thump. Maddox blinked when his face was suddenly attacked by a ball of parchment. It was in that moment he realized the children entering before his eyes shifted over to Airey again.
"It's best to humour him...so we don't set him off." He whispered to Sabel before allowing the grin to finally slip back on his face. "Airey! I'd love one. Kind of you to offer. How did you know my nephew wanted one?" Highly unlikely given the boy was only three but eh.
As interesting as watching the students and trying to pick out the trouble-makers was, he had a strong case of two sitting at the table with him. He watched Cassie depart from her seat, and gave a nod and 'evening' to those Professor's newly arriving. His attention returning to Quigley when the man spoke again, his eyebrows arching again. [color=#ff1cae] “Of course I had a good summer.” She smiled towards Leo as he spoke moving her hand up to play a little with a certain locket that hung around her neck. “I hope you did as well Mr. Kitridge.” She chuckled quietly as she stood between her best friend and boyfriend. “Are you all settled in or does some work in the library still need done? I could always pop by to help if you need.” Funny how she spent so much time in the library, it was just like when she was in school, just for different reasons. Though she still did love the books.
As Cassie came over and chose to stand between his and Nessa’s chair’s Leo could see without doubt that she was wearing the locket. It made him over the moon happy. But he didn’t showcase that. Instead he focused on her words beaming. "Yes I did. It was the best summer in a long time," Especially a certain 2 week trip to Paris. Reaching up to pull a hand through his unruly locks he said thoughtfully. "I'm settled in mostly, except for the book boxes I have to put back in the Restricted Section. I’d love some help with those if you've got time later tonight?" It’d give Leo a chance to ask what was troubling Cassie too because it was clear that it was something.

He wondered, trying to remember how old Sophia’s daughter was. "You missed a great school trip to Loch Ness." He had seen that Cece and Scotty had arrived on the dais too. He flashed them both nods and ‘Good evenings’.
SPOILER!!: Meredith

As for the librarian's inquiry about a dress code, Moxley let out a chuckle, amused. "Not that I know of so no worries there." Though she wouldn't mind wearing black and white to every feast. So classic and refined, just like her. Hehe. "How was the field trip, by the way?" She'd heard things, of course, but she was curious to see if Leo had enjoyed himself.
Turning to Meredith he countered. "It's nice to see you too Meredith." Taking his time to inspect her new jewellery he said "Your husband has good taste." Or he just knew instinctively what Meredith liked. "Family time is the best. How are your children?" Lots of talk of children it seemed this night not that Leo minded of course. Letting out a small sigh of relief over the dress code not being black and white Leo shifted the position of his HoH pin on his suit slightly. And then his face just cracked up into a big smile as he answered Meredith’s question. "The field trip was amazing. You should have come along. It had everything; portkey sickness, angry Merpeople, stampeding unicorns in the night, magnificent water life, and we saw the world’s largest kelpie in the flesh." He left out that their new groundskeeper almost became grindylow food but that was part of the trip.
"Cosgrach, congratulations! And your announcement was adorable. How is little Helena?"
There mere mention brought a biiiiiig, relaxed smile to his face and Cosgrach was so glad that she took the time to visit him and ask about his daughter.
"Thank you, Tiara!" he said, "I hope you enjoyed the candy. And, she's great! Everything's going well according to the Healers. She's born a liiiittle bit early, but the Healers say that's no concern." And honestly, he was glad she was early, because he got to enjoy a few days with her before school.

After talking a sip of his goblet to quench his thirst Leo continued. "How was your summer as a whole?" Everything had probably been overshadowed by the arrival of Cossy’s baby daughter as it should be but he was curious anyway.
Ahhhh, the warm smiles! Cosgrach beamed at his best staff mate back. "I'm glad you liked it," he said, "and thank you." For the good wishes. It was great to see people so excited for his daughter, y'know?
"The summer was hectic," he said and paused for a brief moment as he remembered Jorge and Vic's hectic working days. "Helena decided to come a bit early too, so that was a great way to end the summer." Hehehe. Cute lil kiddo already setting her own rules.
"How was yours?" DID HE SEE CASSIE AT ALL?

Cosgrach laughed along with Cassie. Wasn't she lovely about it? "Thank you, Cassie!" he said cheerfully, "she's doing great, so I think she likes us." Y'know, eating and growing up in general. No, he was not secretly measuring her height in her crib everyday. Also, he bet she was enjoying crying at night, but he wouldn't talk bad about his sunshine.

But he had nearly dropped the parcel that had arrived from the man and his, er, growing family.
The sweeties had been yummy, however.
He offered the man a polite nod and took a hurried sip from not-his water goblet again.
Cosgrach, oblivious to whatever Airey was thinking, just returned the gesture happily. He lifted his own goblet of pumpkin juice and smiled politely.
Why hadn't he done this before?

And the candy had been appreciated, not that she'd had much. Her daughter had gotten her hands on it before she'd had the chance. "How is the little bundle of joy?"
Cosgrach waved back, and got up from his seat to speak to her better. He covered the short distance, and just siiiiiighed.
"She's wonderful," he said with a glint in his eye as his heart was swollen with the feelings again, "she's just... stolen my heart like that!" He laughed briefly. Who could have known that being a parent was magical? Certainly not him! "I can't wait to go back home," he said after a brief pause. Meredith would understand, right? Yes, she would.
--------------
After he was done with speaking to people who congratulated him, he started counting those who DIDN'T. WHY? He was almost SURE that they got his owl, because he did write the addresses neatly, so... he was going to try not to feel too disheartened, and just... yeah.
That was an interesting hand gesture Airey had given them all in greeting and Nessa mimicked it with her own hand, more out curiosity. It proved to be more difficult than it looked. Holding her handout in front of her, she practiced it a few more times, glancing up as she heard Leo approach from her left. "Good evening Leo!" she said brightly, giving him a wide smile. "I had a fantastic summer.. I hope you can say the same?" She knew that he went on a very romantic trip with Cassie, so she'd expect him to have had a good summer.
Dress code? Nessa leaned a little closer to hear Leo's hushed voice better, and she gave him a curious look. "Oh.. not that I know of.." And if there had been, she wasn't following it very well, even if her attire was a little more subdued than usual. Her eyes fell on Meredith on the other side of Leo, and she was mostly black and white. Eeep, with just a pop of color! Just like she told Cassie to do her office! "Girl, you look fab!" she exclaimed with a grin to the Muggle Studies professor. "That splash of green sets off your whole outfit!" And the more she thought about what Leo said, the more she liked the thought of a dress code at one of the main feasts. "Oh, a dress code could be really fun though," she informed Leo with a gleam in her eye at the thought. "Maybe we could do some sort of theme at the end of term feast!" Even as simple as black and white or something more elaborate, but it was a shame to have to wait an entire term to do it.
And there was Cosgrach. He got another of Nessa's bright and cheery smiles as he took a seat and greeted them all. "Hello Cosgrach! Congratulations on your precious bundle of joy! How wonderful for her to arrive before school started so you could spend some time with your family." Such a blessing! And she was so happy for his family. She looked up just in time to see her BFF standing there! Eeep, she stood and gave her a hug. "Oh, you are so welcome! Don't you even dare thank me... it looks amazing!!" See, wasn't she glad she went with the black and white with just a pop of color? It seemed to be a theme going by Cassie's outfit too. "And your dress is totes adorb!" She wouldn't have to mention the dress code theme that Leo put into her head later. "You can thank me by helping me redo my office.. maybe this weekend?"
Sophia and Tiara both got bright smiles and good evenings in return as they approached the table. "How was your Quidditch camp, Tiara?" Nessa remembered her speaking of it before they left for the summer and, as she had her own theater camp over the summer, it had been on her mind.
Glancing to her other side, she noticed the Healer and Groundskeeper had sat down without her noticing. She wouldn't be so remiss to let that go by without a greeting from her. "Why, hello Cecelia! I hope you had a wonderful summer?" Looking just past her, she gave the rather handsome Groundskeeper - er, what was his name again? She should know this - a wide smile. "Hello there! Welcome to Hogwarts!"

But since she was standing there he couldn’t help but ask "I didn’t know you were a fan of gobstones?"
She nodded in earnest at her friend's question. "Delightfully refreshing, as it should be. Got in some truly excellent hikes with Jason. I have tips if you're ever interested!" She could think of a good reason why Leobald may want to take an adventurous expedition, and she was sitting a few seats down the table. "Well then you learned something new in school today!" she chuckled. "I played muggle marbles as a child, so I took to Gobstones naturally when I got to Hogwarts."

Ah, a joyous father! As it should be, really. His enthusiasm was infectious and brought a warm, happy feeling over her. "Yes, the candy was nice, but really the star of the show was the news that went with it." She listened intently to the news of Helena's health. "I thought it seemed like the owl came a bit before I thought it would. Glad to hear she's doing well. Try not to miss her too much, I'm sure that will be hard!"

He appreciated the effort Nessarose had made to return the Vulcan salute. It could be a bit tricky for the unpracticed hands to master. Oh look, there was the new groundskeeper. Maybe he should place bets with Cecelia on how long he would last rather then which of their two houses would best the other. Especially since he was overly confident that he knew the outcome already for the latter.

As interesting as watching the students and trying to pick out the trouble-makers was, he had a strong case of two sitting at the table with him. Despite his best attempts, a small, amused smile twitched up on the corner of his lips. He opened his mouth to offer his reply, and was cut just as short as the other man by the flying paper. They were...sitting at the Professor's table, right? Sabel did a double-take down the line just to make sure. No, no students among them.
Reaching over, Sabel plucked the paper up and unfolded it, sparing the Charms Professor a brief glance at his advice. Well, the drawing was certainly cute. Pet rocks. Was that a thing now? His eyes slipped to the box, to the Astronomy Professor, to Maddox and then back again as he leaned in a little. "A DADA Professor, who got done in by a handful of pet rocks. Sounds very delicate indeed."
With a confidential smile at the Charms Professor, he folded up the paper and leaned around behind Quigley to extend his hand in a handshake. "Airey, was it? Sabel Dakest. If you've got a spare pet rock, I'd be happy to adopt one."
Filtering out all of the children talk going on at the table - sweet solstice there was A LOT this term and it was making him scratch at his arms anxiously - he turned his attention instead back to Maddox and Not-Medea.
Who was apparently called Sabel Dakest. He should have remembered that from the memo. Whoops. Plenty of distractions going on up in this noggin of his this evening.
Eyeing the hand for a moment, the astronomer returned the handshake with a faint grin. "It was. Is. Is Airey," he confirmed, with a few firm shakes before releasing the new professor's hand. "Stellar to meet you." Sort of.
"Oh there are plenty of rocks for everyone, not to worry," he beamed. Alright, you had just earned a few awesome points in the Astronomy professor's book for wanting to adopt a rock. He had to admit that he was a bit surprised that Maddox did as well, but it really was the perfect sort of pet for someone like the Charms professor. Took only as much effort as you were willing to put in to take care of - although Airey had some standards he hoped all would meet. "Let me give you the paperwork to mull over and if you are sure you can just sign it now and we'll get you matched with the perfect rock for you."
Reaching into his enchanted breast pocket, he pulled out a piece of parchment for each of them and slide them across the table. Did they need quills? He had those too. For the record.

She smiled sweetly at him as he said her name. Yes he was quite interesting. “You have probably seen so many things. Goodness I could never do that job.” She wasn’t mean enough and she knew it. She wasn’t mean at all really. She’d probably give them snaps and try to work things out with tea instead of jail, so best she stayed in her tower. “Well welcome, Hogwarts is privileged to have you.” She gave a few happy snaps.
SPOILER!!: Sophia, Meredith, Leo, Nessa, Cosgrach, Cece, and New guy
all your things go here
“Always good to have a busy summer. At least if it was fun busy.” She smiled brightly at Sophia, she always enjoyed her style and knowing she was Leo’s friend Cassie wanted to be friends too. Turning her eyes on Cosgrach she laughed, “I bet she will just adore you.” The students certainly did and his stepson even though he seemed a bit rough around the edges certainly adored him, so she was positive the baby would too. “I would love to see pictures if you have any.”
Hearing that Meredith had a wonderful summer was great and she gave her happy snaps. “Oh I had loads of fun, I worked with my grandmother at her shop and went to Paris for two weeks.” She glanced at Leo all smiled at the Paris thought where they had a fabulous time. “ I always do a ton of shopping with Nessa as well. Do you like shopping?” They could always use more shopping friends.
Her smile hearing Leo say he had the best summer. She was very happy that she could help with that. Her grin stayed as he spoke about the library, “Of course, I can help with the restricted section. I’ll pop over whenever you think you’ll be in.” She always enjoyed helping him, plus it was nice to talk and enjoy each other’s company.
She giggled at Nessa, “Listening to you is always best.” Snaps were happening while talking about the office, it just looked way too amazing not to have snaps. “Oh this” her smile faltered just a bit, “Thank you, wasn’t feeling the brightness of colors.” She jumped to the next subject quickly, “This weekend will be Perf, I will be helping you of course!” Her eyes moving when she saw Nessa glance away she smiled, “Good evening Cece, hope you had a wonderful summer and hello welcome.” Goodness another cutie (Groundskeeper) , not the she was looking.
SPOILER!!: Her side of the table
other end
Excusing herself back to her own side of the table she picked up her goblet of water before turning to her own end of the table. She stayed a bit out of her chair in case talking was still going on between Sabel and Annie, but looked to Maddox and Airey with interest. “Hello, what do we have here?” What was he doing with the rocks? Her eyes moved to Javy, Bortos, and Tiara, “Hello, welcome back! Have you all had a nice summer? Curtis doing alright Javy?” Yes she wanted more pictures of the nephew!
Scott was jolted back from his watching of the sorting ceremony by the sudden greeting. Oh, hadn't seen her there.
He smiled, albeit not as brightly as her own given the circumstances and the fact he was in one of the only places he told himself he would never be caught dead working. His conviction bared a whole different kind of meaning now and it worried him. "Thanks. Bein' completely honest, 'm a bit nervous abou' this whole thing. Heard my fair share 'o rumours an' the like ye understan'."
It was nerve wracking really.
"Wha' happened to th' last bloke holdin' my position?" He told himself he wouldn't ask but now how could he not?

Pleased as she was that everything seemed to be smooth sailing so far this evening, Anastasia had never been one for small talk. Maybe she was too busy reminiscing about the last time she had taught Herbology, and the delightful person who had sat beside her.... She had certainly not been one for making small talk since she had occupied this throne chair here in the middle of the table. Alas, she was getting hungry, and now was as good a time as any for a speech. The redhead stood and walked to the center of the dais, casting sonorous on herself to make certain she was heard.
"Good evening." She'd give those few kids standing and chatting a moment to take a seat.... "I am glad we have all returned to Hogwarts this year. For those of you who are new: WELCOME! You'll find you are not alone in your novelty, as we have a few new faces on staff now. Some of you may recognize our new Groundskeeper, Mr. Maclaren, from the field trip this past summer. Additionally, I hope all of you will learn a great deal from Auror and new Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor Dakest." She took a moment to smile fondly at them behind her. "Other changes include Professor Tanner assisting Mr. Kitridge with Gobstones, Professor Quigley helping out Professor Flamsteed with Gryffindor House, and I, your Headmistress, will be teaching Herbology this term."
Any other news? She glanced around at them and nodded, as if to herself. "We will be continuing our mapping efforts from last term, and will also have a guest seminar at some point this year, so keep your eyes on your notice boards, as always. Enjoy your dinners, and please try to keep the noise to a dull roar this evening. Happy feasting!"
Why, that was an almost cheerful message for her! With a final firm smile, the Headmistress had a seat back in her throne chair and reached for one of the delicious, buttery rolls which had appeared.

Maddox was absolutely pleased with what seemed like the outcome of his fun thus far. Sabel wasn't half bad with that sense of duty he wore plainly on his head and if he was a different person, Maddox might have even admired that but as it stood, he was still Maddox Quigley and would always prefer taking advantage of such a flaw. It was simply how things ran so he gave the faintest nod to Sabel, openly approving of the way he ran with the rock adoption.
Just down the table, he was almost sure he was hearing a whole bunch of congratulations and the like. What was the occasion? Who were they celebrating and what had he missed?
Before he could truly consider it--or ask Cosgrach since he seemed to be the one in the thick of it--Airey drew his attention to him again with the offer of a parchment. Honestly, Airey? They were rocks for Circe sake. Toss 'em out and they'll get picked up. Lazily, his eyes scanned the words but he found them widening a little more with each new sentence until his brows were all crinkled and he started to wonder if the man had really lost it this time.
Annie giving her speech saved him from any immediate response that might have been required (thankfully) but one couldn't fail to notice the way his expression fell when she announced he'd be helping out with Gryffindor. That was practically a recipe for lions finding WORK for him to do. He was no one's helper. That....that was too much commitment. Perhaps something more like 'offering to give a hand and an eye every now and then...occasionally...once in a blue moon'; that sounded decent.
"Airey's having some rock adoption." To answer Cassie's question as he began folding the parchment. "Bet you've always wanted one." Maddox faced Airey again, feigning a solemn look. "I'll look this over and give it some serious though, mate." He lied. "But food will have to come first." Because he was hungry and spinning wild tales of rocks and murder surely worked up an appetite. "I'm sure we'll have better opportunity to converse at a later point in time Sabel." If he was so inclined, Maddox could spin this story for MONTHS.

"Welcome back yourself! Summer was fantastic, very restful." That's what it was for, after all.
And then Anastasia gave her speech. Much more upbeat than normal, actually. She wondered how the students would react to her teaching Herbology. The woman really was an expert, though, so once the novelty wore off it would be beneficial for them.

Airey tried his best not to scowl at the tone in which Maddox had spoken just now. He, Airey, didn't harp on the man's addiction to apples...much. Okay so he did sometimes, but the man really did eat A LOT of apples.
"Miss Wright and myself, actually," he corrected the Charms professor. So it wasn't just SOME rock adoption. It was a student inspired dream that he was simply helping be realized.
Before he could say much else, however, the Headmistress was moving to make her speech...and that meant FOOD. And that he ought to go back to his seat. Which he did so immediately and traced the rim of his plate with his index finger while he half listened to what was being said. New Groundskeeper...yep yep...new Defense professor...more yep yep...oh hey, look at that! Maddox's new position being put out there for all to hear. The astronomer leaned over to throw a cheeky grin towards the man. Heh.
And then there was food. GLORIOUS food.
Helping himself to a not-so-humble serving of everything he could get his hands on within his immediate vicinity. Once that had been sufficiently devoured, he dabbed the corners of his lips with his napkin and gave a firm nod towards Maddox. "I'm going to head on up," he informed the man, his blue eyes glancing towards this Sabel fellow and Meri-berry. "You two are welcome to join if you wish. Once a Gryffindor, always a Gryffindor." He then scooped up Pebbles in his hand and started making his way around the table.
"Good night, one and all," he called over his shoulder with a quick salute before officially departing.
