Default of Professor Culloden

As you enter the room, the first thing you see in the middle of the room is a hand-made Turkish carpet and nothing else. To the immediate right of the door stands a coat hanger for four coats a time, and you are expected to hang your coat there before fully entering the room. Professor's desk and two chairs in front of it are located at the right end with three pictures hanging from the wall, and his bookcase and 'emergency potions' shelves with a representational potion brewing set are located at the left end of the room. The walls are painted light blue.

The desk and visitors' set look expensive, and they indeed are. They are from genuine mahogany, all cut from the same wood. There is usually a big pile of papers hastily arranged at the farther side of the desk, and you will always see a potion phial and a book on the more organised side. Behind it is his office chair, and in front of it are two comfortable looking armchairs with a coffee table between them. You'll find a bowl of sweets that is filled with cheering up potion that will last for approximately three hours. Go on, take a cherry, apple, orange or lemon flavoured. Be careful not to take the last lemon though, because they are his favourite.

To the right side of the wall behind the desk hangs a picture depicting a Mardin, Midyat house with smiling kids sometimes singing a song and sometimes playing a game. To the left is a painting depicting Afghanistan with an old wizard at the centre of it. He is brewing a mysterious potion and will be more than happy to speak to you in Persian, but he just smiles upon asking about what he is doing. He was a respected wizard of Afghanistan, and Professor Culloden paid a fortune for the painting, so act accordingly. Beneath them in the middle hangs a picture of Borneo rainforests with birds and insects. If you are lucky, you will be treated with a birds lullaby and if you are unlucky, the insects will drill your brains with their buzzing sound.

The middle is only occupied by a handmade Turkish rug. While you may step on it, you will land yourself in detention faster than you can say 'potion' if those shoes are muddy or wet.

At the other end of the room is a bookcase full of books about potions, both muggle and magical plants and animals. Don't be surprised if you see your professor's name on 3-4 of them. Depending on how much he likes you, he may lend them to you.

On the shelves next to the bookcase stands his golden, representational potions brewing set and a few phials full of different potions. Along with the carpet and pictures, the set is his most prized possession.

If you can find him in his office, you are 'okay' to pay a visit.

If knowing the difference between trees and mountains wasn't a prerequisite for becoming a professor then there was obviously a very big problem with whoever was in charge of professors. They obviously had their priorities all wrong. "It isn't the same, Professor C. Can I call you Professor C?" she gave him an angelic smile just to show how qualified she was to call him by a nickname, before adding, "My mum would never ever let me climb an entire mountain, but I can climb trees as long as I don't fall out 'cause one time I broke my arm and it was very bad news." Did he want her to spend her entire life without any appreciation for her tree climbing habits? That wasn't very nice, Professor C, especially for somebody with a name as hip and cool as Professor C.

The fourth year covered her mouth with her hand, trying and failing to keep from giggling. Why was he FROWNING? This was HILARIOUS. She uncovered her mouth and bit her lip to keep from sniggering again. "Don't look so sad, Professor C." GIGGLE!SNORT. "I'm not laughing at you, I promise. I'm not even laughing at those little wrinkles you get between your eyebros when you're angry because I think those look very nice." She let out another laugh and immediately covered her mouth again. Was that rude? It wasn't supposed to be rude. It was just an observation but sometimes her mum said observations were rude too which wasn't fair because she couldn't help what she observed. She LIKED those little wrinkles. If you squinted really hard they almost looked like an itty bitty angry face. Where could she get some of those?

Oh. Oh. Was he the real kind of mad, and not the kind of mad he just pretended to be to seem scary 'n stuff? Norah slowly brought her hand down from in front of her mouth and pursed her lips like she'd just eaten something sour to keep from laughing. "Sorry," she said softly, looking at the floor as her mouth twitched but she DIDN'T actually smile, okay? "I guess not laughing isn't really one of my talents either. Sometimes it gets me in trouble but don't tell anyone 'cause I'm fourteen now and it'd be embarrassing." They weren't technically called time-outs anymore but they were practically the same thing. She looked back up at him with wide eyes and a small smile. "Concentration potion sounds good, I guess." She supposed she could say goodbye to her mind being all over the place and all that. At least her mum would be happy, right?

. . . professor C?

Cosgrach ignored the whole explanation of mountain vs. trees and looked at her. He couldn't decide if she was mocking him or if she really did want to call him that; but either way, he liked 'Culloden' too much and he didn't want to look cheeky.

"You can't," he said, "and if you don't like climbing mountains..." He shrugged. Not his problem.

Oh, thank goodness she wasn't laughing at him! Cosgrach still WASN'T amused, but he did chuckle when she said his wrinkles looked nice. Okay, he might be old, but he wasn't that stern to frown forever, so he relaxed even though he still couldn't understand what was so funny. Everyone went through puberty, didn't they? Guess... she was still a bit of a child to talk about it, which was okay. He shrugged it off and said "No, it's okay. Laugh as long as it's not evil." Like to make fun of someone. That wouldn't be Norah-like at all. "All I'm saying is, this will pass in a few years." Sadly, probably when she graduated. It was the professors' curse to bear these teenagers in turmoil. "I can give you a week's dose right now. Then we'll prepare the rest together." Because he was a nice professor, but he wasn't that nice.

”Well, I’m loving Charms.” She said with a nod of her head. ”And potions,” BIG grin. ”And History of Magic has been really interesting… and Care of Magical Creatures! I love anything to do with animals. At all.” Oh… Whoops. That was half of her subjects. She gave the Professor a small smile. ”i’m mostly just loving getting to learn as much as possible.” She confirmed, smiling.

Was 'taddy', 'daddy'? Cosgrach guessed so. So far, he'd heard people call 'dad's 'oggie' and 'taddy'... He hoped his Helena didn't pick something embarrassing.

Oh, she liked potions! Cosgrach grinned back. And she liked... well, half of the classes, but it was quite understandable. All of them looked exciting, even though he saw that only in his last year.

"I'm glad!" he said, "and I bet you're great at all." No doubt. "If that was all, you can leave." Bet she also had some friends to hang out with.

Well, Cosgrach was exasperated too. He wanted to shout that someone professional could fake all. And it wasn't like she was a professional lie-detector either! Maybe Sabel did give away when he lied, but she couldn't detect it. How about that?

On the other hand, what would people think of him if he suspected his colleague? He had such a high profile here, and he wasn't ready to throw it away. He really wouldn't put it past an auror to be involved in dark matters, no, so he acknowledged Sabel had to be interrogated, but... it had to be done sneakily, without prodding his stupid, so-called auror gut.

"I'll think about it, okay?" he said in a case-closed tone. Maybe tomorrow's breakfast... hmm...

No Professor C, then? Aw man. Didn't he know that nicknames were the highest form of flattery? It was only 'cause he was a cool dude, but whatever floated his boat. He was in charge, after all. Norah grinned at Professor Culloden when he chucked, 'cause she KNEW he had some smiles in there. Everybody did, if you looked hard enough. "I'd never laugh for evil 'cause that'd just be mean. I don't want to be mean," she said earnestly, fidgeting in her chair because it was starting to feel like she'd been sitting here for entire centuries. Being mean was the worst thing anybody could ever do with their lives, if you asked her, which nobody did but she thought so anyways.

The fourth year blew a long breath out of her mouth and sat all deflated on the chair. Yeah she needed to get up from the chair. Of course it'd pass but it was hard to think about stuff passing when it passed a lot faster for everybody else. Here she was, practically a fourteen year old baby. What a cop out. That was lame. "If you say so. You're the boss." Not that he'd ever been a fourteen year old girl before, unless he had been which would be a whole entire other story. Even people who HAD been fourteen year old girls seemed to forget what it was really like 'cause even though everybody said it was going to pass it didn't really seem that way. They should really put that as a warning on the job description. The grown ups had their priorities all wrong.

She stood up quickly and nodded. "Okay, thanks Professor Culloden." Norah stood and stared at him for a moment, a million gazillion questions hanging on her tongue. Was her brain going to feel different? Was she going to act different? Was she going to talk different? Could she still daydream or was that not allowed? What if her imagination disappeared and she had nothing to think about during class? What if she started remembering all the wrong things, like numbers and facts, instead of important things like the smells of different flowers and how her favorite shirt felt? Was her brain going to become boring? Chewing on her lip, she decided not to ask any of the questions because they'd make her sound dumb probably, and instead threw a glance a the door. "Can I go? I think I'm going to faint soon if I don't have a chocolate frog." She had NEEDS okay? That was way too much sitting that she'd just gone through.

He was impossible.

"Fine," she responded shortly with a defeated sigh, standing up and crossing her arms in front of her chest as she gave him a long, calculating look. "Whatever you decide, just know that I like him, and if you'll remember correctly, I was a good judge of character in liking you when you were a new professor and a lot less amiable than you are now." It wasn't even meant as an insult - it was fact, and they both knew it. It was no secret that he'd lightened up considerably over time. He just was a much cooler, laid back, fun guy than he had been when he first took the job.

She gave a shrug, then, and started for the door. "Trusting people isn't a bad thing, y'know." He'd do well to learn that sooner rather than later.

Well, good to know she'd never be rude. He didn't think Norah would be, just teenagers were weird.

"Please don't ever," he told her and liked it when she said he was the boss. Hehe, he really was.

Oh, she wanted to leave? Okay, then. "Hold on, I'll get you the vials," he said and got up to walk to his storage cupboard. He got two big vials with the Concentration Potion in them.

"Take one spoon every day after breakfast," he said as he handed the vials to her. "If you have any questions, you can ask. Enjoy the chocolate frog." He smiled. Heh. See? He wasn't scary.

Cosgrach wanted to stubbornly point out that that was the point - dark wizards did look quite amiable when they wanted to - but he held it back. It wouldn't mean anything. It would just highlighten their disagreement - which was caused by Sabel Dakest. As if Cosgrach needed more reasons to dislike the man. So, he just shrugged too and - and bit his tongue at her last sentence. Of course it wasn't a bad thing when you were Sophie Brown, but he didn't say that either. He put on a neutral expression to hide his real ones: he was hurt and confused and hated that stupid auror.

"I'll think about it," he said and locked the door to be alone after she left.

”Aww, thank you Professor. Mam always says that as long as you try your best, that’s the most you can do even if you aren’t the best at something… so that’s what I’m going to try and do.” She beamed at him. Though, she wasn’t lying when she said that she liked potions..or CoMC or Astronomy… yeah. Okay. She liked a lot of the classes. WHOOOOPS!

Marsha grinned at the Professor, nodding. ”Yes, that was all I wanted to ask about. Thank you for your time, Professor.” She said with a grin, hugging the book to her chest. ”I’ll see you in class!” With that, she hopped off the chair she was on, waved goodbye and then walked out of the office.

Grayson was practically bouncing around on the balls of his feet as he waited for Culloden to open the door. Merlin, if the man wasn't inside, he was gonna become slightly agitated. This was IMPORTANT. And he was bubbling over with excitement and had to tell SOME--

Come in?

DON'T MIND IF WE DO.

The Slytherin didn't need telling twice. As soon as he heard those words, he barged into the office, a look of pure glee spread across his face. It was as if someone had spiked his morning pumpkin juice with a healthy dose of Essence to Induce Euphoria. Did he care? Not at all!

"PROFESSOR!" he called before racing across the office and towards the man's desk. A piece of parchment was held up so that Culloden could see exactly what was written on there. Look! LOOK. "I GOT ACCEPTED! I mean, I'm gonna HAVE to get an O in Potions and at least an E in Charms, Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures if I wanna go but Professor! I'm gonna study Potions at WU!"

HOW FREAKING BRILLIANT WAS THIS?!

Grayson was too excited for an old and sleepy Culloden, but the man did his best to wake up. The look on the boy's face was pure joy, so he was curious about what happened. He didn't jump at the calling, but he was still surprised. Grayson had always been so... well, cool, so to hear the boy shout and be just so happy was interesting, to say the least.

"YES?" he shouted back with a smile - it helped him wake up more. He certainly wasn't silly anymore and his eyes were their normal size.

...

..............."WHAT!" He rushed to his feet. HFPOEDPDAİS WHAT WHAT GRAYSON WANTED TO STUDY POTIONS AND GOT ACCEPTED?????? This was more than his heart could handle. Poor thing was beating twice its normal speed. It was a miracle how his mouth didn't tear from so much grinning. His eyes were shining. Pure happiness and pride. Pride for Grayson. To get accepted -

"CONGRATULATIONS!" BIG PROFESSOR HUG WAS COMIN'!

While Grayson was usually slightly observant and wary of his surroundings and people's actions, any sleepy look that Culloden had had on his face before he shouted was completely overlooked. Why? Because he was JUST. SO. FREAKING. HAPPY.

This was why being happy all the time wasn't a great idea. It made you lose perspective.

But seeing that smile only made him smile more. His hands started to shake a little as he waited for Culloden to say something. Any--

WAS HE GONNA GET A HUG?

HOLY FREAKING MERLIN, THIS DAY COULDN'T GET ANY BETTER.

Placing the parchment down on the table, Grayson rushed around the table before wrapping his arms around Culloden. Hugs. HUGS. From the right people, they were alright. But only from a select few and in certain situations, like this one right here. "Thanks a bunch, Professor!" he said excitedly, feeling himself starting to well up inside, "Just...... for everything, man." Really and truly.

When he finally let go, the Slytherin smiled wide at the Potions Master. "The letter only just came through and I had to tell someone so I thought I'd tell you."

Thank Merlin there was no one else here. No one must know about this emotional side, mkay Professor?

Cosgrach patted his shoulder, full of emotion as well. This was his first big official success. Cue a thicker tone.

"It has always been a pleasure to be your professor," he said, "thanks a bunch too." For being a great... gentleman, in general. Always so well mannered.

"I'm flattered you came to me." Like... really touched. It meant he mattered to Grayson. What else could a professor want?

"So, you gonna be a potioner, huh?" :')

'It has always been a pleasure to be your professor'

LMAO, if he thought he had been emotional before, it was NOTHING compared to how he felt as soon as he heard those words. He could feel something stinging at the back of his eyes. Something that he couldn't quite control.

Screw you, emotions.

"That means a lot, sir. Can't even begin to explain just how--" ........... Er. Wait. "I mean....." He cleared his throat. "Of course it's a pleasure to teach me. I am Grayson Whitlock, after all." But he was smiling. Smiling a lot, actually.

"'Course! Why wouldn't I come to you?" It seemed like a fairly obvious choice to the Slytherin. Besides, Culloden was his favourite Professor but he wasn't about to go ahead and mention that.

"Uh huh! Or that's the plan if life decides to cooperate." Which it'd better do. "Got any tips? Words of advice?"

Cosgrach laughed when he said that. He was just like his youth. "Of course you are," he said (his tone wasn't thick ok) "you remind me of my youth." He didn't know know how Grayson would take that, but it was true.

Well, you know - other people would send an urgent message to their parents. But Cosgrach hadn't either, because his parents hadn't deserved it. Maybe Grayson's didn't as well. It was sad,if so...

"I bet it will," he said, "you can do anything you set your mind to." This acceptance was a proof to that. Ugh. Grayson was his youth and Cosgrach didn't know what to feel about that.

Did he have advice? Of course, plenty!

"Don't ever think "ew gross", befriend the professors and volunteer for exploration trips." Like the mountains and such for new ingredients. "Oh, also know the world and have a general idea of which plant is where." Nothing too detailed, that was the job of herbology, but still.

"Also, remember that you have a professor here who's ready to help you anytime." He patted his arm once - he meant it, yeah?

Grayson couldn't help but wink. What? His ego was soaring through the stratosphere, winking was simply a natural response. But his ego was completely forgotten about -- shocking, wasn't it? -- when Culloden mentioned something about reminding the guy of his youth. "Really?" he started, smiling even more, "Were you a handsome young fella as well?" Wiggly brows for you, sir.

Being able to do anything he set his mind to sounded great, didn't it? Absolutely. It made him smirk slightly and stand up straighter, as if the words were reverberating through his body. "Just need the right amount of determination, is all." And he liked to think that he had plenty of that.

It was a good thing that the boy wasn't one to be grossed out easily otherwise Potions would be a hard subject to continue to do. Still, he listened carefully to the Potions Master's words and nodded along slowly. Exploration trips? Jeez! "I hope these trips won't be boring." Or that he won't be paired up with people who were likely to drive him up a wall. That would suck. "Good point. It'd be the same for magical creatures as well, yeah?" Considering that they used creature parts and all.

................. Oh jeez. Oh Culloden, why?! Grayson had done SUCH a good job at maintaining his cool exterior and now he was being an emotional sap. One whose chin was starting to wobble and he had to bite down on the inside of his bottom lip to stop himself from giving too much away. Jeez, man.

After several seconds, Grayson cleared his throat before saying quietly, "I hope the new Professor realises that they're gonna have a lot to live up to."

Well, that was - Cosgrach erupted in a loud laughter. "Why, I'm still handsome," he said with a wink - at least he would like to think that he was. No, he thought he was. He just wasn't 'young' anymore.

He nodded. 'the right amount of determination'. That was the key phrase, really. Now he only had to hope that Grayson wouldn't grow tired of potions...

"Well, I spent some 12 years of my life on these trips," he said, then shrugged. "But they aren't for anyone and I get that. Some people prefer lab work." Though... expedition trips were the best, really. His face showed that he sort of missed that life, but he was too old for that lifestyle now. Sadly.

Creatures, right. He chuckled. "Them too, yes. I just... directly assumed you'd know them." Y'know, because they were more responsive and interesting after all? Hehe. This man sure liked creatures more than plants.

...yeah, Grayson, WHY? The man got silent then, and gulped hard. He bravely tried to smile.

"I know a few there. If they annoy you, it won't be hard to give them a taste of their own medicine." Because jokes helped with emotional conversations, clearly.

Ugh.

It was nice to see Culloden laughing like that. It was something that made Grayson smile a genuine smile, along with the words the Potions Master went on to say. Lol! Just LOOOOOL! "I bet you got everyone's attention," Was it surprising how easy it was to talk to the man? No. Absolutely not.

"Twelve YEARS?!" he spluttered, his eyes widening at those words. Holy freaking Merlin, that was pretty much most of his own life. When he was a tiny six year old, Culloden was off doing research work. Unless, of course, it was waaaaaaay before that. MAN. That really put into perspective how much of an age gap there was between the two of them, something that Grayson hadn't really thought about before. "You must've loved it a lot, then." Because twelve years was a LONG time, man. "Lab work sounds interesting enough but it kinda depends on who you're gonna be working with." Shrug.

Directly assumed he'd know them? Cue another shrug. "It's the same with plants, I guess. I like them if they're interesting and dangerous but if they're namby pamby, then what's the freaking point?" Truth be told, he was just gonna get bored.

Jeez, was it Culloden's aim to bring out as many of Grayson's emotions as possible? Because if so, then boy, was it working. "I'd be dead scared if I were them in this situation. Practically quivering in my boots."

Cosgrach laughed. "I won't deny I did." He bet Grayson did too.

Yep, twelve years! Cosgrach shrugged and smiled. "As you said, the people l went with were splendid, I was young and loved outdoors." Perfect conditions, really. "I hope you find out what you like and do it." Otherwise, it would be rather boring again, even if he liked potions.

... namby pamby? The man burst into laughter. "No truer words have been spoken!" Namby pamby... Merlin!

Hi throat lump. He tried to clear it. "Okay, enough of flattery. You still have the rest of the world to tell to. shouldn't keep you away from the admiration." He smiled. He knew the feeling. Off he go, now, and shout it!

Was it wrong of him to want to know about Culloden's teen years? He wanted to know what the man had been like, whether he was a rebel or an innocent guy. Or if he'd been the man he was now. Dude wanted to know it ALL. "Daaaaaaaang!" Wink.

"That explains it," he said, nodding slowly, "No wonder you spent such a long time travelling and doing research work." Besides, something told him that if Culloden had been around people he didn't like, he would've left sooner. Human nature and whatnot. At least, Grayson would've if he'd have been put in a situation like that. "Thanks! I just love Potions so it might not be too hard to find an aspect I enjoy." 'Least, he hoped not.

It was a good thing that the eighteen year old wasn't one to get too embarrassed. In fact, a wide smile spread across his lips while his ego soared. "See? I'm not just a pretty face."

Oh man, was the meeting over? Already? Sure, Culloden was right in that he had a buncha other people to shout about this to but a part of him kinda wanted to stay as well. The smile faltered a little but he still nodded along. "Yeah, 'course. Er," Could he? Should he?

........... He was going to.

The seventh year shuffled forwards and wrapped the man up in another hug. Yep, that's right, TWO hugs in one day. Lucky Culloden, eh? Not that it was a particularly long hug, mind you. Just a second or two or five and Grayson had let go and was smiling at the Professor again. "Guess I'll see you around?"

Waaaaaaave and off he went!

Hearing that Grayson liked potions and would find a suitable path made Cosgrach happy. "You certainly aren't just a pretty face," he said with a dmall laugh, "and I'm sure you're going to be amazing at what you'll do."

Ah, Grayson was going to make others proud too--

A HUG WAS COMING AWWW. He hugged the boy with all his fatherly emotions back. "Keep me updated," he said, "I'd like to hear about your adventures."

He smiled then. Grayson would, yeah?
