Then he took the other can and repeated it, doing the same thing with the rope and tying a nice little knot to keep it in there.

And now, he needed a partner to test his completed telephone with! "Anyone need a partner?" he called out.

Angel was looking around for a partner, when suddenly an older student and a Prefect at that was asking if anyone needed a Partner, Angel was a bit shy to ask the guy but decided in the end that she would since otherwise she wouldn't be able to do the lesson. "I need a partner if you don't mind partnering with a younger student."

Tin Can Phones? Uh. What?

Leah raised an eyebrow at that. It seemed cool, but she doubted that it would actually work. Even with Professor Moxley's explanation about sound waves, it was difficult to believe that two cans and a string could make a telephone. She shrugged and drew the diagram into her notes.

The Puff went over to the Professor's desk to get the materials needed. Two cans, one hammer, one nail and a string. Simple enough. She observed these objects as she returned to her seat. Hmmm, first step: Make a HOLE.

Lux supposed that they were technically done the activity, but it was cool talking to each other through the tin cans. She had no idea how it actually worked, but supposed that a lot of it had to do with vibrations being sent along the string; that must be why it was important to keep it taut.

AJ Butterflies like Adi's nose?

Adi clearly heard that one and he instantly let out a laugh. Yeah, red butterflies did like his nose to they made him sneeze because they tickled it. Hehe. Grinning, he flashed he a thumbs up. They were done! "Bay butterflies like yellow flowers,'' he said to Lux as he set down his end of the can.

"That was so cool, wasn't it?'' Adi wondered if there was a range for which the tin phones worked or as long as there was a taut string, it didn't matter. Anywaaay, since they were done, the Puffer gathered all his belongings together. Class should be over soon.

SPOILER!!: Hady

He was staring for a reaction, cause it was funny... HE found it funny.

Shrugging, Zeke grinned. "And where's the fun in that? Besides, throwing notes is a muggle thing to do, I'm being muggle-like in muggle studies... it's a thing," he said as he attempted to explain his actions. Truth be told, he had simply felt like it, not that it really mattered either way.

"We can test yours first," he decided, figuring the whole ladies first thing applied in this context.

Alright so his theory made sense. Weirdly made sense but still none the less it did. That in itself got a laugh out of Hady followed by a nod of her head. "Alright I'll agree with you on that and I suppose it could've been worse like a book or something." She had that happen in muggle school once before and trust her with this....books hurt.

"Okay then." With a small grin she picked up the tin-can phone and handed him one can as she held the other and walked across the room. When she got as far as the string would let her she held her end (the can) to her mouth making sure the string was nice and tight so hopefully he'd hear her.

Speaking clearly with her hands around the can to keep the sound inside she spoke to to. "You're lucky it was you throwing that paper...no one else would ever get away with something like that." Her eyes were shining in amusement as she was clearly just teasing him. Did he hear her though? Lowering the can down she looked across the room at him to see if he did.

GOOD! She understood. And books most certainly were worse, "or stones," he agreed, though admittedly stones weren't something they were likely to have IN the classroom.

Accepting one end of Hady's can-phone Zeke rose from his seat and took a couple of paces back. With the string tight enough that he could strum it - should he have wanted to... which he was tempted to do, but refrained from.

With his ear pressed into the can, Zeke waited to hear Hady on the other end.

The vibrations that came tickled his ears, and he couldn't help but squint his eyes closed as he held in a chuckle. The words weren't incredibly clear, but they never were with cans, it didn't stop him from understanding Hady's message though, and it had him LAUGHING out loud. "I would hope not," he replied into the can, using it now as a mouthpiece.

Dot was handy with lots of things - a wand, a needle and thread, a quill, some utensils in the kitchen, and a variety of other things... but she wasn't at all handy with a hammer. She propped up the can and put the nail against the flat bottom... but every time she went to tap the hammer against the nail, the can would skid away from her.

WAS THIS EVEN THE RIGHT WAY TO DO THIS?

"I'm inept at using tools. I'm a tool fool. Heeeeeelp." There was some banging of her head on the desk before Dot tried pinning the can against the desk and attacking it with the hammer and nail again. It got a bit mangled, but there WAS a hole in the end.

Unfortunately, there was a second can.

SPOILER!!: Norah
Norah wiggled excitedly as AJ demonstrated the process. Okay, she started out with a couple of little squirms but by the time the Gryffindor had made holes in the cans there was some serious wiggling going on. Hammering stuff with whacking noises and EVERYTHING? Aw yeah.

With a grin in AJ's direction, she picked up the hammer and positioned a nail in the middle of her first can. "Here I go!" She brought the hammer down with a loud WHACK....on the table. Whoopsies? The fourth year gave the table a little pat because it really hadn't ASKED to be whacked like that, before lifting the hammer again for a second try. Aiming and stuff was important, apparently. She brought the hammer down again, this time actually paying attention to where it went, and gave a satisfied smile when the nail broke the surface of the can. Was she strong or WHAT? Aaaaand another hit, and then another, AAAND another because the middle one had missed but who was really counting, until there was a nice hole in there and she pulled the nail out. Halfway done and she still had all ten fingers! And toes, but that was kinda irrelevant. With a couple more whacks, the holes were complete and then came the hard part: string tying.

Whomever had invented string tying really wasn't thinking about all the people with clumsy fingers, 'cause tying knots was even harder with plaiting her hair which Norah was practically incapable of. Apparently that stuff was easier when you actually brushed your hair but that was NOT a sacrifice she was willing to make just yet. Fourteen year olds had priorities, clearly. She fumbled with the string until something that resembled a knot held that side in place, before doing the same to the other side. Well. It'd work if she didn't pull to hard? "I'm finished too!" WAIT. No she wasn't. The fourth year bet down to her bag to pull out a marker, then drew to eyes and a smile on one of the cans, using the lopsided knot as a nose. "Okay, NOW I'm finished." WAIT NO. She picked up her hammer again and hit a nail so it stuck out of the top of her smiley can. UNICORN CAN. UNICAN. AW YEAH. "Okay I promise I'm actually finished this time." And now time to plaaaay.

Norah was doing well over there especially considering she had never had to use a hammer before. AJ hummed to herself and shouted out encouraging words every now and again. Whack! The table was hit. "Nice shot!" Even though it wasn't the intended target it was still a wicked shot. Then her friend was hitting the can in just the right place. "Perfect." AJ could totes be a teacher.

All set! Yaaay. Now they could talk to each other through cans which she was sort of pumped about. Oh, but she wasn't done. What was the marker for? When AJ noticed what Norah was doing she instantly regretted not thinking of that herself. Another nail was added to the top of her can. "Umm---"

Sweet baby unicorns. Norah just made a unicorn can. AHFAHFEIWF! AJ sort of twitched and her eyes glazed over just a tad. "How majestic." Can envy was legit. "I'll trade you cans for a chocolate frog." AJ had plenty of those in her bag. Or she could just make her own. Would it be completely lame to copy her? AJ would do anything when it came to unicorns and she didn't quite care what others though, but OMG! She was amazed, and pretty sure that her and Norah just became best friends. "I have something to make that even better." AJ reached into her pocket and pulled out a white ribbon looking thing that she had taken off a rolled parchment in her common room earlier. "Here." She wrapped the ribbon around the unicorn horn. "Now it's perfect."

As much as she wanted to stare and admire Norah's can for hours on end, she still wanted to try out her can. "Put this end to your ear," she said as she handed over the other can attached to her her string. Holding on to the first can she walked as far away from her partner as possible. SHe gave her a thumbs up to let her know she was about to start.

"Did you know that banging your head against a wall burns like 150 calories? Oh, and it's impossible to lick your elbow... believe me, I've tried. What else were they supposed to talk about?

Time to test this muggle contraption out now.... Henric stepped away from Benny and held up his can onto his ear to listen.."Yep...ready!"Henric replied back with one thumb up. He could hear small vibrations of sounds coming through his can, kind of hollow in a way at first but then he heard Benny's voice from the other end. Benny send him a message that sounded quite funny to him.

"Did you say "WAGONS ARE FULL"?"Henric called for Benny, chuckling. Did he hear correctly? He wasn't sure why Benny suddenly thought of wagons."Sorry Benny, can you say it one more time please?"he asked and returned to listen in more intently this time.

"Thanks..." Benny said, not sure what to make of the mention of being a tattoo artist. The flames were simply symbolic of dragons which we wasn't going to try drawing on his can. As for tattoos, the only one he ever had was a temporary one from that fair he went with Angel to.

Wagon are Full?!

The look on his face was total confusion. "Nope...that wasn't it," he said to Henric without the telephone cup, shaking his head at the statement. Benny nodded at the request to repeat it, making sure the string was taught once more before speaking, "Dragons...are...cool." Each word as clear as he could get it as he spoke into the can like he was supposed to. Hopefully it worked a little better this time.

Stones? Oh geez noway. She certainly hoped no one would throw stones at her that would seriously hurt! "No, definitely not stones," She agreed with a shake of her head. Ouch. Just the thought of it hurt.

As she spoke she could see what appeared to be Zeke trying not to laugh. And then he was laughing! Had he heard her then? Apparently he had for he pressed the can over his mouth. Seeing this Hady quickly moved her can over her ear to him giggling at the feeling it gave her and his reply.

Moving the can back over her mouth she answered him once more, "Nope. No one else is worthy of paper throwing." This was followed by laughter as she walked back towards him. "Let's try yours now?"

This was really fun and she wouldn't mind at all doing this all lesson.

And the second hole was made, and Dot hadn't even smushed her can this time. She did a wiggle of victory in her seat and flourished the can, although no one was paying her any attention at the moment. Or ever. That was the perk of being the anonymous ginger in the back, probably.

Now to attach the string. Threading a needle was easy enough once you learned how, so Dot worked with that as theory. String against the hole, and then she poked it through with the nib of her quill. One end through and knotted, then the other and knotted.

So this thing was a phone? "Anyone want to place a call?"

Catch-Up Post: Question, Mini-activity & looking for partner

Cutty thought about the discussion as he took a sheet of parchment and his ...wait a minute...what happened to his quill? He'd just had it as breakfast when he's seen that little ginger girl buzzing about. Fields! She'd taken it!

He grumbled in audibly as he resolved to use a muggle drawing tool instead. With drawing a pencil from his bag he set it to his parchment. He continued to think about the idea of Mr. Bell and Mr. Watson and how they changed society. It must have been a very empowering feeling to know that something you released into the world carried such impact. Cutty thought he'd experienced such feelings before himself. All it really took was a bit of ingenuity and the will to see it through. It probably emboldened the inventors community in general and not just in a way that led to the evolution of the telephone. He wondered if Moxley knew what other types of inventions were sprung on from the telephone, even if not directly related to the phone.

Cutty put up his hand, "Professor Moxley? Thinking more on yer question, did the invention of the telephone lead to other inventions that changed society like? Things that weren't necessarily communications related booht that were nonetheless inspired by it's invention?" He really didn't use pencils all that much and he drawing was showing that. Great Merlin! "It joost seems like such a bold thing to come owtoff nowhere."

Cutty looked down at his drawing. Sweet Circe....it was perfect!

Rooney's small head was swimming with things that he knew and things that he was trying to retain, and his notebook was full of infuriated scribbles. He was running out of room on the pages and desperately required a new one, but Mama was busy with things so he didn't mind waiting until he went home for the holidays to get some stuff. When it was time to put things together, he was ecstatic! Calliope and he had actually put things like this together but had messed something up each time and not been able to get it to work properly.

So.. HOPEFULLY this would work out.

Scratching his back-end, the first year scurried towards the front to get himself TWO cans, a hammer, a nail and some string.

"Can anyone use a hammer SAFELY?" He didn't trust himself to not smash the nail on his thumb again.

Cutty put his hand on his wand before remembering that this was Muggle Studies and opting not to accio the needed items over to his desk. He got up, looking a bit like he'd rather not have, and moved over to the boxes which held the things that he'd need to make the primitive muggle contraption, which he thought carried with it greater magical potential than the more sophisticated models they'd seen.

Playing with the bit of string as he carried the items back, Cutty set them down on his desk and began working. He turned each of the cans open-end down and placed a nail at the butt-ed and over-eagerly whacked the hammer to the nail. The nail, however slid on the surface of the can's butt and Cutty narrowly missed slamming his finger with the full force of his hammer wielding. Nope. Too close of a call. "Adhero." He said after reaching for his wand and stuck the tip of the nail to the end of the can holding it in place. He held the can still and brought the hammer down onto it's head puncturing it. After the secondary and more successful attempt, Cutty repeated the action on the other can. His buggy brown eyes searched the room for a victim...partner.

Little kid from Ancient Runes at 2 o'clock. "Bronwyn, here. Lemme help yer." Cutty took his nail over to the kid's desk and placed it onto the butt-end of one of Rooney's unpunctured cans. "I know this is Muggle Studies, booht I don't think Professor Moxley will mind a bit of magic so long as it's used for safety purposes...Adhero." He casted the sharp end of the nail to the smooth end of the can letting it seemingly balance there.

Bronwyn? Who w-- oh. Him. Hah.

Rooney smiled as thanks and took a step back as Cutty stepped in to help. Rooney would let the older student take care of what he was going to and just nodded when he spoke. "And you're going to use the hammer for me, right? I can tie the knots in your strings? I went to camp." And he was particularly good at the knots. He'd even tied knots good enough that their raft hadn't sank and their team had been the best.

And it was all he had to offer right now, anyway.

That, and the teaching of knots.

Cutty was always a bit suspicious, so when the younger boy offered to let him puncture the cans he thought there was probably a reason for this. "Alright, yeah, yer the official project knot-tier." He might not have been strong enough either. Cutty lifted the hammer and sent it careening down onto the head of the nail puncturing a hole in the first of Rooney's cans. "Adhero." He said setting up the second one. Bang! The hammer hit and then there was a second punctured can. Cutty lined them up for the young Bronwyn boy to do his knot-tying skills.

"I went to camp too as a kidda. Did they make yer learn a dance?", he asked curiously.

The blonde nodded again, and sat to focus on tying a knot into one end of his own string. It was easier to do that and then thread the unknotted end through both cans and make the final knot. "Does this mean you're my partner for testing them, too?" If not, Roo was going to have to find someone else in the room. And he was already half way through his mental analysis of Cutty. He'd have to find spare parchment to make his page on him later. He couldn't just look at his feet or height and write them down right now. He had learnt his lesson on that with Xavier in their dorm.

"A dance?" His eyebrow lifted and he looked at the other male before shaking his head and threading the string through one can. "They made us learn songs, though."

Rooney wouldn't have minded a dance at all.

Zhenya just nodded, holding the nail over the tin can. One, two, three... poke! The nail pierced the tin can, Zhenya feeling the resistance as the nail poked through the tin. Cool! She removed the nail and put it aside. No more hammering, but now they got to put the string through the holes. Zhenya grabbed the other two tin cans and put the string through one, tying it in a knot and tugging it to see if it was going to come through the hole, which it didn't. She tried again with the other side, giving it a tug, and it stayed in. COOL! Well, now her tin can phone was done, she waited for Cinna to tie her strings in. Then they could practice them. Zhenya had no idea what it would do, having never used a telephone or a tin can phone before. But she looked forward to it.

Whomever had invented them needed to come ehre 'cause she had some QUESTIONS. "Do you know how to do cartwheels? Sometimes I land on my head but usually I can do 'em. Do you think those burn calories too, or do you have to hit your head on a wall?"

This! This... she literally couldn't even deal. AJ took the cans decorated like a unicorn and beamed. "Thanks, man. This is one of the best things ever." And she just gave it over without anything in return. Best friend status happened even if the Hufflepuff wasn't aware of the miracle. It was something that AJ felt deep inside. "It's a done deal. My mom owns a sweet shop. I can get her to owl over loads of sugary goodness." Ain't no party like a chocolate frog party.

See... licking your elbow WAS impossible. "For real. You would think more thought would have been put into our bodies. Not like we can change them. Unless... being all magical was their way to make up for it. Like, sorry you cant lick your elbow; Here is a magic wand that you can use to turn rocks into dragons." And you know what? Apology accepted. This Norah chick though... she was tons of fun. Why have they not been hanging out more? It wasn't everyday that you found somebody on your level.

Cartwheels she could do. "Yeah, watch this!" AJ sat her can down and did a clean cartwheel. There wasn't much that AJ couldn't do when it came to athletic things. "Hmm... good question." She definitely wasn't a Ravenclaw, but she knew things, she did. "I think as long as you are hitting your head that you are burning calories." The floor. The wall. They were both pretty hard things. "Can you do a crab walk? That was always fun. "At my muggle school we would play crab football." Good times. Good times.

"Yeah, we should. That way when they wehrk perfectly, we'll have no one to thank but ourselves." And wasn't that a beautiful feeling? Just knowing you could do no wrong? He picked up one of their strings and gave it a small tug, testing it to see how tautly it need be pulled in actual practice. Cutty had gotten to that point in adolescence where breaking things was easier and easier. He put down the string.

"Oh. Wasn't the same camp then. I thought it might be." And anyway, Cutty had made the assumption that Rooney had gone to a magical camp when it could've easily have been a muggle one. "D'yer have a gehl, Bronwyn?" The senior snake boy kinda thought it'd be funny if he did. Munchkin love.

Rooney was just about to comment about how sometimes the same camp actually did different things on a yearly basis, but he'd been sidefarted by the question. ".. It.. It's Rooney." His name. Not.. golly. "And no. No.." He inhaled sharply, and put his head down, putting a focus on the threading of the string and the tying of the knots. If he didn't make eye contact with his partner, then he wouldn't have to address the furious red colour in his cheeks right now.

And please don't ask another question. Please.

Cutty could see the bit of red flush from where he sat. Bronwyn...erm, Rooney did not have a girlfriend, but maybe that meant he wanted one, and maybe one in particular.

"Right. Time to tests these bad boys out then." The snake picked up the two ends of the two different tin can phone models and quickly exploited the fact that they had two at their disposal. One for hearing and one for speaking. Aww yiss. "Well don't yer want one. Coom on. We'll use the phone to practice yer pick up lines. Alright. Pretend I'm an attractive young muggle and I've given yew m'phone number. Wot yer gonna say?" Cutty knew what he'd say, but this would be good practice for the Litlun. "When I said 'Accio hottie' I didn't expect it ter wehrk." He said into the phone giving the active role play lesson a start.

Meredith was pleased to see the students working together as it meant she could just relax behind her desk and observe without having to do too much talking. She obviously deserved a bit of a break after the amazing knowledge seeds she'd been planting all class long. Yes, Meredith Moxley had herself an educational green thumb, if you will. The headmistress would be proud.

...

Eyeing the time, the brunette got up from her seat and returned to her place at the front of the room, whistling to get everyone's attention. Yes, it was that time.

"Alright everyone, that's all for today! Once you've finished testing your phones, you can pack up and head out. Feel free to keep them, if you want!" The Moxinator was generous like that.

OOC: Thanks for coming, everyone! I'll leave this thread open a bit longer for those wanting to declone/finish up! Homework will be posted tomorrow!

Roo mimicked the action of putting one can to his ear and the other near his mouth before allowing the blush to fill his face. Taking the can down from his ear, Rooney managed an almost-scowl and hissed some sort of 'please stop' into the one he knew Cutty would hear from at the other end. "I'm eleven. And not a subject of a badly murmured 'accio'." And then the first year smiled, and raised the other tin can to his ear to await a response.

That was if his knots had worked well enough and Cutty had managed to understand him.

He also really hoped that this kid didn't use that line on real people?

Had it worked?

"Brilliant," Toby replied, all beamy as he kept quickly rotating the hammer in his hand. He looked back at his materials and stopped spinning it, with the hammer-y end pointed down. "I dunno. I think so. So like... everyone has a chance at making one." Even as he spoke, Toby got the nail in place at the bottom of one can and poised the hammer over it. He glanced up. "Tell you what, that means the person listening can have cans over BOTH ears. And it would block out other sounds a little too, so we can really see how well they work. OR we each have an ear can and a mouth can at once, like a proper phone." Ah yes. A proper phone. With all those cans.

And with that... SMACK. Toby brought the hammer down and right onto the nail. One hit was all it needed to make a hole, and soon... SMACK... the other can was sorted too. Nice.

Setting the hammer and nail to one side, Toby picked the cans up to look through each of the holes to see if it had worked well enough, at which point he noticed... the holes in the desk. Um. "Oops." Sorry Moxley.

Ahem. He'd fix that soon. Later. Yep.

It was a little fiddly, but soon Toby had the string threaded through and tied off, and he HAD A PHONE. Sort of. Hopefully.

"Ready when you are, Mr. Whitlock," he said to the Slytherin, holding up both cans connected with the string to prove it. "So now if you trade one end of yours with one end of mine?" And then they could DO THE THING.

Dude was smart, man. Grayson was a little in awe of the guy but there was no way in Merlin that he was gonna admit that. Instead, he nodded slowly at Toby's words and proceeded to pick up his own hammer and nail. "That makes a lot of sense, you know." Dude agreed, even if he thought it was kinda a waste for them both to make tin can phones. What was the point, Moxley?

Two ear cans? Er. "Those ideas sound great and all but the first idea means that someone's gonna have to talk into two mouth cans and that's just gonna look freaking weird, man." He wasn't up for looking weird, you know. People taunted things like that. And there was no way in a million years he'd let anyone taunt Toby, unless said person had a death wish. "I think I like the second idea better. A proper phone and all. We could talk and listen at the same time. Much smarter, handsome Hufflepuff." Nods for you, Fuller-Thompson.

And if Toby was gonna get started with the making of the tin can phones then so was he! Didn't wanna be behind and all that. So, positioning the nail in place, the Slytherin started hammering it into the tin can. Why they couldn't just blast a tiny hole in the tin cans using magic, he didn't know. Had Moxley not thought this through? Or did she just wanna make them suffer by doing more work?

Freaking rude, Moxley.

Oops? Grayson, who was about to nail the second tin can, looked up and over at Toby's tin--

LOOOOOOOOOOL! Oh MAN. "You're a dangerous fella, Toby." Lololol, way to lighten the mood of the lesson. Shaking his head, Grayson went back to his second tin can and started nailing it in place. Hole and all that. Then, taking the string, he threaded it through one of the holes, tied a knot inside the can and did the same to the other side. There. All done.

"Ready, yo!" he said, holding out one end of the tin can he had made. Come on, Toby, take it so that he could do some tin can flirting. That was what this was about, after all.

Now that they were done they could get to work on their phones. The Gryffindor tied her cans together checking to make sure that the string wasn't going to slip through the holes. Perfect! She looked over at Zhenya. "Ready to try these things out? Stay here and I'll keep going until the string gets tight, okay? Hold your end up to your ear and I'll talk to you. Cinna took off to the other end of the room. She stopped once the string got tight. She grinned and held the tin can to her mouth, "Testing, testing 1..2..3.... Hello Z. Come in Z. This is C. Can you here me?" She might be giggling like a little kid. She was kind of having too much fun right now.
