Dervish and Banges is a small, dusky little outlet located at the end of the street in Hogsmeade. Squatting between a few wooden pillars painted to look like marble, the green and gold building seems to be more of a remodeled mausoleum than a Wizarding place of business. As you enter the hideous, peeling green door and inhale the thick scent of sawdust and mildew, you'll likely question whether or not the shop actually was a mausoleum at some point.
Squeaky floorboards, musty smells, and creepy feelings aside, the place may appear to be in an eternal state of decay, but the sagging shelves stocked full of shiny, brand or like-new knickknacks say otherwise. The shop sells both new and reconditioned items of both the Wizard and Muggle variety, such as...
Do-It-Yourself Cauldron Repair Kits (or for a fee, D&B will do it for you!)
Take your time, walk around, pick up one of the coupons off the back counter, and try to not be intimidated by that looming shopkeeper just behind it at the back. He doesn't talk much, but he's got it where it counts, kid. Oh, and don't steal anything. Roundhouse kicks to the face are not fun....for you.
Another school year, another weekend of Hogwarts students filling the streets. And that meant a weekend of kids trickling into his store, touching all of his merchandise. Saul wouldn't mind so much if they actually bought something, but they seemed more to come in for the novelty and just look and touch.
Maybe he should offer some coupons or specials. Saul did try that one year, but as most of his merchandise was already discounted, his profit had been minimal. He'd try to talk to some of the other shopkeepers later for some suggestions, maybe. But for now, Saul did a little extra cleaning around his shop and unlocked the door to prepare for the influx of children.

She'd bundled up and jumped at the opportunity to get out of the castle, having been feeling a bit trapped there lately. How could she not? Maddie was in a constant state of questioning herself these days and it was very new and very unlike her. Since this type of thinking only started after arriving at Hogwarts, she could only conclude that leaving its walls for a bit would help. ...Right?
Sure it would.
Slipping into Dervish and Banges, the brunette wrinkled her nose slightly. Gotta love the smell of dust and mildew in the morning. Does wonders for the nostrils. That burning sensation for instance, that had to be beneficial. Or, well, a sure sign she was going to develop some kind of sickness from being in this place. Hm. Good thing she was up-to-date with all her potions. Now to do some looking around.

Thornton hesitated for a good long outside before deciding to go into Dervish and Banges. First of all, it looked as it the building itself might just rot and fall to pieces if someone didn't pay attention to it, and the smell.... Thornton was convinced it would never come out of his clothes if he stepped inside.
But he was curious. And he thought maybe a pair of Spectrespecs might be a fun gift for his sister, so here he was. As he pushed through the door, he wrinkled his nose. Quick. He'd make this qui--
Oh. "Hey, Maddie," he said, spotting his friend and walking over toward her. He was grateful they were back on.. comfortable terms? and that he didn't feel the need to turn around and walk back out of the shop. Didn't mean that he still didn't sometimes feel awkward. Slipping his hands into his pockets, his eyes scanned the shelves near where she was standing. "Looking for anything in particular?"

"Thornton, Hi." Maddie smiled a little at the younger Ravenclaw, happy to have the company. His company in particular meant a lot these days, considering. She was just really glad that he was back in her life because it didn't feel right when they weren't talking and she didn't like fighting with him, if that's what you could call the awkwardness and hurt feelings that had happened. "Not really. I was just browsing, I guess. This place looks a bit worse for wear, doesn't it?" She made no effort to talk quietly because in all honesty, she hoped the shopkeeper would hear and do something about the smell, at the very least.
"What about you?" The fifteen year old nudged the boy gently. "Shopping for anything in particular?"

This place had always interested him, but he had never spent much time here. Today however he had to come in with his cauldron in a bag. The more advanced potions he had been trying to make hadn't been going the way he wanted. It was something about darker potions that decided to melt part of your cauldron, burn your arm, and leave you needing things fixed. He couldn't just go to Cossy, because the he'd have to explain what potions he was making and well no.
Speaking of Cossy he was sure his baby sister and mother were coming into Hogsmeade today. Maybe he'd get a chance to see Helena. He always kind of missed his siblings when he was at school. Turning his eyes back to the shop Bart walked inside. Instead of going right to the counter and getting the stuff he would need to fix it, he decided to actually check out the shop.

Hurt feelings. Embarrassment. Awkwardness. Rejection. Really, you could pick any of those terms and it would probably have applied to how Thornton had felt over the last six months. And truthfully, he wasn't entire over it.
But he was trying.
It was getting easier to laugh with her, which he did when she assessed the shop. "Almost like it might fall down around us," Thornton replied, perhaps a little softer than she had been. "But, given how it smells... maybe that's not such a bad thing." He rocked a little on his feet as she nudged him. "I thought a pair of Spectrespecs might be fun for my sister."
His eyes scanned the shelves as he spoke, trying to see what else he might get. Her birthday wasn't until April, but Thornton wanted to be prepared, especially if he didn't manage to get down to the village again. "what do you think?"

Brynn wasn't far behind Bart as she walked inside Dervish and Banges. This place had strangely become one of her favorites for one reason or another and she slowly looked around. She didn't really need anything and hadn't really come in for anything specific but maybe she'd see something to catch her interest. Spotting Thornton not far from them she gave him a smile and small wave, then an acknowledging nod to Maddie while still smiling before turning her attention back to Bart.
"Looking for anything particular?" she asked as she followed him down an aisle. Maybe he was interested in the cauldron repair kit she had seen in the window display on the way in. He was all about potions. She picked up a pair of spectrespecs, looking them over and wondering exactly what they were meant to do.

The tinkling of the bell on his door as it opened alerted Saul to the presence of customers and he meandered towards the front of the store to offer assistance and generally keep his eye on things. A few young'uns milling about through the aisles, he took them in with his eyes a moment, then busied himself behind the counter wiping off some dust. It didn't appear that they needed any help just yet, but he wanted to make himself visible just in case and to also deter any sticky fingers. He just hoped they were here to buy and not just look around. Sales had been low lately.

"No not really." He answered as he looked around the shop. It was interesting to see everything in here. He continued to walk around looking at things. Seeing Brynn look at a pair of Spectrespecs he turned to look too. "Those are cool." He looked a bit longer before moving on.
"I did bring my busted cauldron, I think I'll need to get a repair kit before we leave." He was distracted now though, he wanted to see and touch everything that was in here. Stopping again he picked up a replica Goblet of Fire, "To bad it wasn't the real one." That would be super cool.
Bored he set it down and looked for something else, "So what else you doing in Hogsmeade? Meeting anyone?"

Maddie laughed lightly, looking around the place with a wrinkled nose. "It'd be a shame if all this stuff got ruined, though. It's pretty interesting." And Maddison Cooper didn't throw that term around loosely.
Spectrespecs, hm. The fifteen year old wasn't sure that she believed they did what they were supposed to but they were fun to look at. She guessed a younger girl might find them entertaining and so she nodded her head. "I think they're unique and if she doesn't already have a pair, she'd probably enjoy trying them out." PAUSE. "Y'know, Omnioculars could be nice, too. Not as fun to look at but more functional."

Brynn nodded. She could understand just coming in here and seeing what caught one's attention rather than have something specific in mind. This place was really good for that and that was exactly how she felt herself today. She looked back down at the spectrespecs in her hand as he commented on them and she shrugged. "Kind of weird-looking." Her brown eyes found the sign next to them, describing what they were meant to do. Wrackspurts... right. She tossed them back in the box she had found them in.
"Oh, right.. they do have some of those here." She glanced around, trying to remember here she had seen the cauldron repair kits last time she was in here. "I figured you might want one. Might be good to keep around even if it hadn't been busted." As much as he did potions, she'd figure it would come in handy at some time or another. But what did she want to get? The 15 year old wasn't that into potions that she'd want her own cauldron repair kit.. maybe they had something musical that she'd find interesting. But so far, no luck.
The Ravenclaw looked up as she noticed Bart looking at something else. Fake Goblet of Fire... what would someone even do with something like that? "Maybe you could keep loose change in it." Brynn shrugged. "Same old, same old." Honestly, Hogsmeade was starting to get boring anymore. "We'll see who's around..." She didn't have specific plans, but she wouldn't mind running into someone.

Bart twirled around the Goblet of fire thing a few times before tossing back to the shelf. “That isn’t a bad idea, maybe I should get a few just in case. I have been working on more advance potions lately.” He had been using his master of advance dark potions book when he could sneak it to the lab without Cossy finding it. Not that it had done much good since the sixteen year old was breaking cauldrons more than he was getting the potion correct. He wasn’t sure why either he followed the directions to the T. Something had to be missing from them.
“It seems more like a piece of junk really. I don’t know why anyone would really bother.” He shrugged and moved on to the next thing. He then picked up a replica resurrection stone and looked it over. “Too bad my grandpa was an auror and would know it’s a fake the minute he saw it.” He tossed it again starting to get bored.

Thornton nodded. "It is interesting," he said, stepping closer to the shelves to consider the various bits and bobs strewn about. "Do you... think all of the stuff smells the same as the shop, though?" He wrinkled his nose, thinking about what would happen at home if mother or father thought Mairwen's gift smelled of mildew...
He looked over at Maddie as she gave her thoughts on the spectrespecs and considered. "I.. think she needs something fun," he said finally, pulling a pair off the shelf and turning them over in his hand. "She...gets lonely and everything at home is so... serious." He spoke more to himself as he considered the gift in his hands. Mairwen deserved something fun. Something quirky. Something that didn't have to have a real purpose.

"I hope not." But now that Thornton had brought it up, the brunette was curious. She picked up a pair of spectrespecs for herself and gave them a sniff, then another. Her conclusion, they didn't smell as bad as the shop. A good thing for business, surely. Setting them down, she turned her attention back to the Baines boy.
"You're a really good brother, Thornton." Maddie had a bit of experience with brothers so she felt she had the authority to say so. Plus she'd spent some time at his house so she could see how it might be hard on Mairwen, being there all alone. "You could also send her some of my origami paper and one of my origami books, if you want. I've got so many books now that I wouldn't miss one." Not that she needed the books, anyway. She knew most of the folds by heart.

"Think I should send Benny something?"
Thornton watched, trying not to chuckle, as Maddie picked up the specs to sniff. He supposed that was as good a way of telling as any. However, he did not try it for himself.
"I try to be," he said a little sadly, shrugging. Thornton Baines had... not an insignificant amount of guilt about being at school and leaving Mairwen at home by herself. He looked up at Maddie, though, at her offer. "Really? That's.. very kind." He smiled, grateful. "I'll have to give you something for it, though," he added, very straightforwardly. "I can't just take it."
He'd decided on the Spectrespecs, though, and so played with the coins in his pocket, counting them in his head.
"...I suppose you could. Do you want to?"

Maddie wanted many things for Thornton Baines but the most recent thing was for him to stop feeling sad. She could see it in his eyes, y'know? That's where people's emotions usually came out of hiding, even when you were doing your best not to feel anything at all. Knew from experience, she did. Luckily a smile followed shortly after and the brunette didn't have to go in for a hug, something she was used to but not entirely great at. At least not as great at it as her best friends.
"Can too just take it." The fifteen year old smiled, her tone matter-of fact. "In fact, I insist. Besides, it's mostly for selfish reasons. If your mum agreed to help me again this summer, that means I'll be around. Might as well try to get your sister to like me and I figure this is a good first step." Just saying.
Eyes trained on the spectrespecs, Maddie cracked a smile. "I think I'll get Benny spectrespecs, too. Mostly because I think it'll confuse him and picturing his expression makes me very happy."

It wasn't as if there were specific things that were making Thornton sad any more. It was just his sort of default orientation, so it wasn't so much sadness as it was melancholy. And it had been going on so long that... it was hardly recognizable to the boy.
He listened carefully to her reasoning, his forehead wrinkling slightly "You don't have to do anything for Mairwen to like you...." he said, turning the spectrespecs over in his hand thoughtfully. "But if you're sure..." It would be rude to refuse a gift. "You should pick the one to send. Something good for a beginner."
It took a moment for Thornton to realize that he was just watching her smile and he internally kicked himself. "That seems like a good reason to get them, then."

Maddie wasn't so sure about that. She knew her friends didn't understand why she doubted people the way she did but they were her friends already, they were biased. Maddison Cooper had never been the most likable girl and she wasn't upset about it, it was just something she was aware of. Acknowledging it helped her from getting her hopes up where being accepted was concerned. "I'm positive. I'll look over my books and get one to you later, yeah?" She knew where he slept, after all.
"I think so, too." The brunette selected the same pair she'd sniffed only minutes before and observed them thoughtfully before moving on down the aisle. There was more to see, did he know?
"You should come and visit me at Benny's sometime. I mean, if we could work that out. I think it'd be fun."
He couldn’t help but eye her a bit, “Who’s around? Got anyone specific in mind?” It wasn’t that he had anyone that he thought she’d see, but maybe she did. If so the best friend should know about it. Moving back towards the cauldron repair kits he kept side glancing her. “Oh I should probably pick something up for Emmy for her birthday. Hmm maybe one of those Goblets filled with candy.” That sounded like something she’d be in to.
Brown eyes followed the goblet as it left Bart's hands, then she looked back up at him. "Oh.. yeah, maybe it would be a good idea," she shrugged as he mentioned getting a few repair kits. "You can't reuse it though?" Maybe she was confused about how they worked, but she didn't think you needed a new one any time you needed a repair. But what did she know? Brynn couldn't say she wasn't advanced at Potions like Bart was.
Brynn shrugged again as he said the goblet was more junk than anything. "Yeah, I don't know.. Seems more useful as a container than anything else. Maybe a cool decoration sitting on an end table." Like she said, for loose change. But a lot of the merchandise in this store was along those lines, not exactly useful. And she wasn't really seeing anything that she was all that interested in. "Your grandpa was an auror?" Hmm, she wasn't sure she knew that. Not that it mattered either way, but she found it remotely interesting as something she hadn't known before.
Her eyes snapped back to his as he questioned her. "Yeah, maybe.." she shrugged, playing it cool for now. She'd tell him, but as she wasn't sure exactly where she stood, she wasn't sure what to say. But she was hoping to see someone in particular. Brynn glanced at the goblet again, knowing she didn't really fit in with that group so she wouldn't be getting Emmy anything for her birthday, but that wasn't a bad gift idea. "Sure, what girl wouldn't like a goblet full of candy?" she smiled. She knew she would.

Thornton simply nodded. She knew where to find him. "She'd probably like it if you folded some with her," he mused, wandering down the aisle with her. "If you wanted to, that is." He knew that Mairwen got lonely at home and maybe if at least Thornton's friends paid attention to her when they visited, it would help.
Eyes traveling over the shelves, Thornton nodded a bit absently. "In Italy?" Hmm. He rolled the thought around in his head, wondering if his parents would consent to a trip that far. Perhaps if he talked up the cultural aspects....
But that reminded him. "Oh. I almost forgot! We're going to be spending some time away this summer with my aunt and uncle and cousins on the coast, and mother said that I could invite my friends if I wanted."
It may not have sounded like it, but it was an invitation.
