Being October already, this is hardly the first DADA lesson that students have been subject to, assuming none have played hookie. But where the former lessons were basic spells, review and practice, this is the first time the room has looked so different.
Walls and crates of varying sizes have been carefully placed and positioned throughout the practice hall in a labyrinth-like design. The shortest wall stands a good seven feet, preventing any curious students from peeking over. The tops of trees and tall bushes can be seen poking over the walls as students file in, as if curious as to their presence.
At the entrance to the labyrinth, Professor Dakest has perched on top of a crate, his legs crossed under him as an otter patronus darts this way and that, sliding and frolicking along the open floor between the Professor and the Practice Hall door with unbound glee.
File in, take a seat somewhere on the floor and feel free to interact with the otter patronus as you wait for the rest of your classmates to arrive. The lesson will begin shortly.
------------------------------------------------ OOC: Hi all! While this is our first offical class, please remember that it is already October IC, so there would have been several DADA classes thus far.
Feel free to RP your student arriving and settling down We will move along in about 12-13 hours. Lastly, please read the Rules before posting.
He was still thinking, his mind on everything but who might be sitting next to him, but the voice that spoke his name was familiar- had a certain kind of song to it-
Irish.
Which meant-
“Eden.” He said, turning to the blue haired girl as she asked after him. Damien looked at her, really looked. He could see it what had so entranced Rorie- Eden was beautiful after all, and kind, and probably not the type to cheat-
Damien cleared his throat. “I’m fine, I’m just out of it.” He replied, managing to keep all those troublesome emotions out of his voice, but leaving it uncharacteristically empty.
He had a moment of wanting to say something else, though he didn’t know what- but then the Professor spoke, his silvery Otter of a patronus was crawling over Damien’s shoulders and sitting on top of his head as if this was it’s natural nest. The Gryffindor chuckled with surprise, and did his best to reach up and try to itch the technically non-existing creature.
Why? Why the fascination? That was a surprising question, Damien wasn’t sure if his answer would be exactly what Professor Dakest was looking for, but… “Because it doesn’t seem like it can really be controlled, and things that you can’t pin down are always more interesting than what you can.” Least, that was his thought.
Eden nodded at mopey-looking Damien and pulled out her notebook. Would she need to take notes? Probably. Even though it seemed like a more practically set up class, she was a Ravenclaw. And she needed notes. SHE HAD TO TAKE NOTES. And even though Eden was a terrible note-taker, and her handwriting was messy, and she organized her notes in a SPORADIC way......she could make sense of them. So. There.
She giggled a little at the otter on Damien's shoulder and thought it was really cute and cool and she LONGED to be able to produce a patronus like that. But it just never happened for her...
Looking up as Professor Dakest started speaking, she smiled and nodded. "Oh-yes, sir--just in a good mood today--" Merlin. Even professors had started noticing her good moods? She must have been really mopey before...hmph. But the weekend had been so GREAT. How could she NOT be in a good mood right now?
His question was interesting, and Eden doodled in her notes a bit as she thought about how she would answer...why DID she find it so interesting?
"I think what I find most interesting is that...the bad guys...the dark wizards? They could be any of us...any one of us...if put through certain conditions and events and...upbringings...the monsters of humanity are never the ones we think...they always come from within. And this...is why it's so fascinating. Because deep down...we all have the capability."
Ahem.
What?

Haha, he wiggled his brows at her. Lux was amused. The otter patronus moved over to her, and she gave him some attention before he wandered off to someone else. Awwww. Oh well, it wasn't as if she could actually PET it or anything.
As more people arrived, she sent them waves and it wasn't too long before the lesson was starting. Discussions could be interesting, and Lux became thoughtful as she tried to articulate her views on the matter. After a moment, she raised her hand. "I think a lot of people find this stuff fascinating because they don't really know much about it. Plus, it DOES serve as a good advantage to know the evils out there in order to protect yourself against them." That spoke for both dark magic AND dark creatures.

Brian just blinked at the professor. He was asking why the Dark Arts were fascinating? Of course they were fascinating. They were fascinating because they were taboo, and telling a bunch of teenagers that something was taboo would just make them want to do it more, right? Teenage rebellion and all that. A lot of people were saying that, though, so Brian would just keep silent for now. He was satisfied to twirl his pen around, doing funny stunts with it to keep him awake. Early morning class, y'know? He had to keep the fingers awake because then the whole body woke up.
But really. Forbidden fruit always tastes the sweetest.

Once at the front of the classroom, the otter patronus sat, becoming suddenly still and attentive.
Sabel looked around at all the gathered students, checked the door and decided it was probably time to get the show on the road. Hoping off the crate, he moved to stand beside his patronus. "Good morning everyone. In case you haven't guessed, we have some interesting things to do today, so let's get started."
With a flick of his wrist, his wand was out and the doors to the classroom were shut. Latecomers would have to decide whether they wanted to join in or skip. What mattered to him, were the students currently gathered. He cast his gaze around at them for a moment before taking a seat on the floor in front of them, at their level. Crossing his legs, he considered the first row, and the faces behind.
"Before we get into the bulk of our lesson, I'd like to have a brief discussion. It's come to my attention through experience and various encounters, that the Dark Arts, Dark Magic and Dark Wizards are all found to be intriguing and fascinating topics, worthy of curiosity and exploration. Especially in the younger generations." As in, younger than him.
"Can I ask you why? Or if you might have any thoughts as to why." He glanced at a few of the suspicion bearing children. "These answers will not be relayed to any 'higher authority' or get you in trouble. I ask, because I don't know."
Fancy that, a Professor who didn't know something. Now students, time to enlighten.

Benzi was seated at the front of the little group, and listening attentively. Having walked in to be greeted with THIS classroom, he knew they were finally going to get to the proper stuff he's been waiting for.
Also, bitter looks had been thrown at the otter patronus. He'd momentarily thought that perhaps the lesson would be about patronuses today, but why already get upset and worked up if he didn't actually know for sure? So Benz would assume it would be about anything else and shifted to get comfortable. No patronuses today, please. Please and thank you.
He cocked his head to the side as he thought about Professor Dakest's question, and nodded as answers started flying around him. Most of them were right........... Er. Crazy eyes, you got something to share with the class? And since when was that crazy hair?! Benzi eyed Eden after she spoke, but after a few moments of consideration realised she was probably right and nodded at her. Yup. Benzi and Crazy Eyes were in agreement. ... Perhaps about the hair as well. it looked kind of cool. BUT, back to DADA.
All it really takes if a few steps in the wrong direction. That was something he'd definitely be thinking about later.
"I think I agree with the curiosity for the unknown. It's dark, it's dangerous, we don't know much about it but we DO know that it is capable of far worse things than just killing," Benzi raised his hands, thinking while talking. "There's just something stupidly exhilarating about that... And, right, so learning about the dark arts and dark wizards themselves is fascinating in and of itself, but then learning that we can actually beat them? They're so good with magic, the dark arts are incredibly strong and potent, and then learning that we can counter that with good magic? I think that's the best part."
Had he gone off topic? Whoops. He liked this subject a lot, he could talk about it all day.

On the one hand blah blah blah + lots of talking = boring. On the other hand.... professor was kind of hot? Not that Ruby needed to worry about such unimportant things anymore, she WAS one half of the cutest couple in the WHOLE SCHOOL as voted by her peers. And her boyfie was hot, he knew it, she knew it, they all knew it and... oh her mind was wandering. Ummm what was the professor even on about? Something about dark wizards being appealing?
She processed the tail end of what she had heard and then stuck her hand up.
"Bad boys are hot, professor."
So. That was why.

Zhenya sort of hoped the 'interesting things' were learning to cast a patronus. Zhenya had always wondered what form her patronus would take. She was more aware of the room when the Professor closed the doors with a flick of his wrist and sat down with them. He was cooooooool. His statement was vaguely correct, at least for Zhenya. She had no interest in experiencing areas of darkness, but she was interested in knowing about the darker side of magic. Knowledge is power. But now he wanted to know WHY 'Dark Arts, Dark Magic and Dark Wizards are all found to be intriguing and fascinating topics, worthy of curiosity and exploration.' Zhenya had a quick brainstorm. Why indeed?
She wasn't sure if it was a call out your answer or raise your hand class, so she went formally and raised her hand anyway, waiting for an okay to speak. "Er, well I guess for me anyway, I'm intrigued about the darker side of magic because it's something I know I will never experience. Well I hope so anyway. I'd never see myself casting the unforgivable curses or duelling with anyone outside a classroom, so I suppose my mind wants the knowledge. For example, I'd never cast the cruciatus curse on anyone, and I hope it's never cast on me, but I'm interested in what reasons the caster has to cast it, and what it feels like on the victim. I suppose because I hope I never experience it I want to know about it." Did that make sense? She had a feeling she was rambling a bit and stopped, looking a bit self-conscious.

Sophie DID want to conjure her own patronus and let their otter and ferret scamper about the room together, but she had read the rules and knew better than to practice without permission. She could SEE the calculating in his eyes, too, and noted that he did not tell her she could do her own, so... she nodded back in silent understanding. She didn't FULLY catch onto his line of thinking yet, but she would. No big deal. She didn't need to show it off anyway.
As class began, Sophie settled onto the floor, her wand in her lap, and she lightly traced the carvings on the vine wood with a finger subconsciously. It was cute, the way DaBest sat on the floor with them like a child, and she appreciated how personable he was. Treated them like equals, rather than talking down to them. It was very cool of him.
The question he posed was an interesting one, and Sophie considered it while the others gave their answers. Why were they interesting to HER? Basically... well, for most of the same reasons that everyone else described. But with a raised hand, she offered her own personalized version, "It's the unfamiliar, I think. I mean... MOST of us grow up without direct contact with Dark magic, if we're lucky. There's something enticing 'bout learning about things that scare us, things that can be threatening to us - it gives us a rush, y'know? S'like Muggles with their scary movies, 'cept this is real life for us. And we wanna learn 'bout them for... well, just general curiosity reasons, but also so we know what's out there - curiosity about the world at large, really, and potential dangers... and naturally we wanna learn about these things so we know how to protect ourselves from them. That's normal. S'just human nature to have those kinds of instincts, if y'ask me."
She shrugged a bit nonchalantly. It was a pretty straightforward question, and her answer was obvious.

Zeke was grateful to the others for arriving and thus allowing Sabel to be distracted by others that were not HIM. The patrons was cute though, like... if you were into that kinda thing, small creatures, otters... very industrious though. It made him wonder what HIS patronus might be one day. Whatever it was, he hoped it would be cool.
He was hoping they could just launch themselves into this whole scaling walls and shooting targets or whatever it was they were going to be doing in here today... but apparently they were being quizzed.
Zeke didn't like this question.
It was the kind of question he was sure Emily wanted an answer to, so it only confirmed his suspicions that Sabel would indeed be spying on him and taking notes too. He best make his answer super good then. SUPER good.
Hand raised, Zeke waited his turn to add his two knuts to the conversation.
"I don't think the dark arts are alluring at all, I think it's nasty horrible stuff that should be avoided like the plague death that it is and it is in no way a symbol of power or anything like that and in fact the people that use it are super weak and stupid and heartless horrible nasty people that should die." Ahem. Yeah. Stick that in your letter why don't you.
Angel raised her hand. "Professor it's because you are told that they are dangerous and many people like children when they are told not to do something they have to try it so that they can see why they are told not too." Angel had a few stories she could tell the Professor but she would probably get into trouble for them.

So they're not gonna learn about casting a patronus today. He was quite disappointed but relieved at the same time. If there's a student had butterfly as a patronus, he would gonna freaked out and run away. As the professor started the class, the Korean boy then listened to him talking about the dark arts. Well, he didn't think it was fascinating at all maybe because he's only fond of music and performing arts. Maybe.
"I think because... They're just curious or maybe also had a background like... They're coming from dark wizard family and stuffs. Maybe." Jackson spoke up as he raised his hand.

Henric didn't know how to answer Professor Dakest. Why they were so intrigued with DADA?...He had no idea why but something about defending one self in times of danger was an important part of being a wizard, wasn't it? He learnt Judo at a young age so he knew that muggles not only used it for self-defence, it was also used to show off their skills in a duel...wasn't it the same thing too for wizards? Anyone could be a dark wizard if she/he had the skills to, and in order to prevent that from happening, we need good wizards to restore the balance.

Hady couldn't help but almost giggle when the otter had stopped before her and almost touched it's nose to hers. It was so CUTE! Normally she wasn't insanely girly about this stuff but yeah this was adorable.
Patronus or not it was cute. Still grinning she had sat down and waited for the arrival or her classmates. Resting her bag on her lap she relaxed her hands on top of it. Her gaze was mostly set to the otter as she watched it dart about and greet each person that entered the room a different way.
Only did Hady's attention shift when she heard the Professor began to speak. Very quickly hands were being raised around her...the same answers being said over and over. So really there wasn't much point in answering was there? Hady didn't think so which was why she kept quiet for now.

THE CUTE LITTLE OTTER HOLOGRAM-THING.
Natalia giggled heartily as the otter patronus hopped on her shoulder and slid down her arm. She only hoped that her patronus was just as adorable and just as companion-worthy. Having never conjured a patronus in her life, Natalia eyed the professor's otter in awe as the little creature hopped around the room.
Dark magic? Popular to younger generation? Nope. Natalia certainly have never messed with that type of magic.
"Humans are naturally curious." Natalia gave a simple explanation, shrugging slightly afterwards to show her uncertainty of her own comment. It was understandable to her why wizards would like to discover more about dark magic: it was mysterious. Humans throughout history have tampered with the unknowns, the enigmas, the riddles, the secrets. For what reason? - that was among the most-asked questions. Natalia, being naturally curious herself, often asked herself these philosophical questions during her free time (when she was not paying attention in class).
"Or more accurately, it's a mixture of curiosity and self-benefit." The Lioness added to her response.

So far the new professor seemed interesting. The classroom set up was cool and different and he just seemed mysterious. This was completely different from their previous professor. Yeah, AJ would miss her, but she was diggin' the new guy.
Ohhh, the lesson was starting and AJ liked the way his discussion was going. She listened to what everybody else had to say before she added in her two cents. Some she agreed with, and others not so much.
Time to give her view on the subject. The lion raised her hand and waited to be called on. "For me personally, I'm intrigued because it's always considered bad and off limits and I want to know why? Is it really so black and white? I don't think so. Surely you can use some things that are considered dark for a good reason. And just because use used something that was deemed dark doesn't automatically make you a dark wizard. Plus, I'm just curious and like to test my limits. As soon as you tell me I can't or shouldn't do something it makes me want to prove you wrong and do it... just because." Really, she could go on and on, but she felt like she got her point across to some degree.
Hugh was NOT fine. He wasn't embarassed, as Hughbert's didn't get embarassed but he might have been flushed. In a taken off guard kind of way.
But not embarrassed.
He did not acknowledge Dakest's inquiry, yo. He sort of fumbled through a response of nonsensical words and then shut up. Nailed it.
....he didn't answer the question though. Hugh was still struggling with the English language and it was probably for the best. He didn't have a point of view on an opinion question.

Marigold raised an eyebrow at Ruby, hiding a smile, before pondering the question herself. Probably had something to do with what Ruby was getting at, the allure of the forbidden, stuff like that, but she didn't know how to pronounce allure as she had only ever read the word, so she had to think of a different way to phrase it.

Dot was itching to poke at that patronus. Put her hand through it and see what it felt like. Make friends, if possible. Was it possible? Her interest in the patronus would have to be quelled later, though, since the professor was ready to move on with the class.
Why were people interested in the Dark Arts? Most people were going with the forbidden fruit angle, which made a lot of sense to Dot. Only... well, she thought there might be more than that. Her hand shot up. "Professor, I think maybe some people have the idea that using Dark Arts can get you to your goals faster than doing it the real way. I think people are always interested in looking at the easy route before they decide that it isn't worth the cost. 'Cept when they decide that it IS worth the cost."

Zander was taking a step back this time around. Defense Against the Dark Arts had never been one of his strong suits... So instead of flat out trying to answer, he just jotted down some notes and listened to the others discuss a bit. Ruby's answer made him chuckle quite a bit, though maybe it was true.
... Did girls like bad boys? 'Cause that changed things. Made Zander think, y'know? Maybe if he were one, would more girls want to snog him? It was a valid question, okay?
But anyways. Class. He HAD to stay focused if he wanted to turn things around and do well in this class. It was lie a fresh start, having a new Professor. He wasn't even all too sure if he was allowed to be coming to lessons after his failing score... But he showed up regardless. Needed to prove that he could do it, even if things didn't go so well the first time around.
When he heard Sophie's answer, he lifted his head and wore a big smile on his face. He liked her's the best. She was after all a GENIUS. Unfamiliarity made people curious. It was a simple answer at it's core, but made loads of sense. Sophie Brown was always right. It was a fact of life.

That was really cool! He really liked seeing patronuses. Dad's was a pug and mum's was a cougar. He preferred animagi but well patronuses were just as awesome! Torie's eyes followed the professor as he sat down on the floor. He bit his lip at his words. No, he didn't agree, they aren't fascinating topics and definitely didn't have his curiosity nor did he want to explore them. He looked around for Jay knowing he probably felt the same way but didn't see him. Swallowing he didn't even raise his hand to answer like he normally would. Why would anyone want to even be curious about that. Unless of course they wanted to be a dark wizard?
Nope, he wouldn't ever do that. His first dad enjoyed it. But he didn't. No way!
Dante was not sure of what Professor D's idea of interesting was but it seemed he was going to find out whether he wanted to or not. He was the Professor after all. Though he doubted that this was all going to stay shush shush with only the classroom. If Dante was taking bets he would say this info was goign to go to a higher authority sometime in the future.
Well whatever, Dante will just give an answer.
"Every Great Hero needs a Great Villain."
Though sometimes the Villains are more interesting than the heroes. Which is why some like learning about Dark Wizards. Of course there are other reasons.
Just an observation.

Tia was about to protest when the otter patronus skittered over to her and placed its paws on her parchment, but before she had a chance to, the patronus darted back off.
And then they were getting started, only not with the main topic but just a brief discussion of sorts at first. Interesting to say the least, discussing about the dark arts and magic and why it fascinated the youth. And really there was only one explanation that she could think of and it came in the form of a quotation. A quote that was rather appropriate given her house.
Raising her hand, she lowered before speaking, "In the words of the 35th American President, 'In a time of turbulence and change, it is more true than ever that knowledge is power', so basically, what this means is that the youth desire the knowledge not necessarily to use it, but because it means power. And to be frank, who doesn't like having authority?" See, there was a reason Ravenclaws were so into learning.

Grinning wide, Marsha couldn’t help but happily smile as one of her favourite Professors welcomed her. What? She was happy today, not that she wasn’t most days. She was slowly getting over the weird feeling of missing her sister Alis and slowly growing more and more accustomed to getting decent sleep again. Hehehe.
EEEE OTTER!
Marsha let out a giggle as the otter moved up on arm, over her shoulder and then down her other arm. Ohhhh look at him/her/ze? go. So adorably cute. Darn, mostly no nicknames. Hmm, maybe she would just stick to mentally calling anything by a name then. She didn’t want to be classified as OVERLY weird… even for a first year. Heh.
Oh look, he was sitting on the floor with them. Awesome. She knew that Professor Dakest was cool.
Listening to everyone else giving their answers, Marsha continued to think about it. Putting her hand up, she gave an answer that she thought was different enough to the others in her class. ”Sir, maybe they don’t really realise they are doing it, until its too late? Like they do one charm or spell or hex in a situation where it is needed and then they think since they have already done it once, using it again won’t matter… Or they are using it to start with in grey situations, where there is no wrong or right reason… It might be something like ripples in water, from rain Professor? A tiny drop of water, that becomes larger and larger as its actions and consequences get shown; which would then require more magic to try and get out of which could spiral?”
As Kace greeted Professor Dakest, he smirked and knew he was going to bring up his career choices. He began to say, "I actually knew what I wanted to do. I mean I made an appointment with the Care of Magical Creatures teacher to discuss options. I realized I do love animals though." he shrugged and hoped it didn't sound too cheesy. I guess talking to him helped him out in some way. Now onto the lesson at hand. He heard the Professor's question and it got him thinking. He began to ponder why it was an interesting subject. Once he had a theory he raised his hand,
"Well Professor I think the dark arts are interesting because it is a topic some people would not necessarily study on their own. I mean some people would not necessarily study killing curses for fun. As for the history aspect though I find it interesting to know what other wizards have done. It makes me feel that they started out just like us. It is something we can relate to but I do like the concept of Harry Potters' history with Voldemort.." he said just thinking out loud. I mean it was on topic though.

Professor Dakest seemed like a cool guy and all. He'd been an Auror and taught a cool subject so Grayson approved very much. Besides, he'd even said 'howdy'. Cool or what? Just don't do anything to make him think otherwise, mkay Prof?
And the otter was nice. It had immediately darted for him, OBVIOUSLY because it liked him and all. Grayson didn't blame the otter, he was hot and cool at the same time, anyone would like him.
Apart from certain people who hated him but he didn't care about their stupid, false opinions.
ANYWAYS. The question? An interesting one, if truth be told. It really made the seventeen year old think about his answer and why the Dark Arts seemed so popular. It was pretty easy, you know? But some people's answers? PSSSSSSSH. Jeez, talk about ridiculous.
He did, however, like Ruby's answer. Wink for you, Banner.
Once he knew what he wanted to say, Grayson raised his hand in the air and said, "Where there's good, there's evil. You can't expect to live in a perfectly good world where nothing bad happens. That's freaking impossible." Yin and yang and all that. "Besides, the evil makes things interesting. Everything would be soooooo boring if it was all smiles and rainbows. The bad things add a bit of spice to life, you know? While it's great to find out about someone's good traits and whatnot, it's the bad ones I'm interested in. The secrets. The things that make them tick. It makes a person more interesting." 'Course!
Was he finished? No way. "I wouldn't use dark magic at first." He had morals, thank you very much. "But if someone or something threatens to hurt me or someone I care about, you can bet your galleons that I'm gonna defend myself and them, even if that means using dark magic. You have to protect yourself by any means necessary." Shrug.
