Default DADA Lesson I: Your Greatest Protection

DADA Lesson I
Your Greatest Protection

Being October already, this is hardly the first DADA lesson that students have been subject to, assuming none have played hookie. But where the former lessons were basic spells, review and practice, this is the first time the room has looked so different.

Walls and crates of varying sizes have been carefully placed and positioned throughout the practice hall in a labyrinth-like design. The shortest wall stands a good seven feet, preventing any curious students from peeking over. The tops of trees and tall bushes can be seen poking over the walls as students file in, as if curious as to their presence.

At the entrance to the labyrinth, Professor Dakest has perched on top of a crate, his legs crossed under him as an otter patronus darts this way and that, sliding and frolicking along the open floor between the Professor and the Practice Hall door with unbound glee.

File in, take a seat somewhere on the floor and feel free to interact with the otter patronus as you wait for the rest of your classmates to arrive. The lesson will begin shortly.

------------------------------------------------
OOC: Hi all! While this is our first offical class, please remember that it is already October IC, so there would have been several DADA classes thus far.

Feel free to RP your student arriving and settling down We will move along in about 12-13 hours. Lastly, please read the Rules before posting.

------------------------------------------------

Class Progression:
Class is now closed. Thank you all for your awesomeness and participation!

Hugo wasn't scared, or so he thought, he was surprised. Yup. But why the spell hadn't work out? Maybe the thought wasn't happy enough? It should be because there was no greater happiness than getting food when you are starving.

He waited like 10 minutes before coming out, he needed to think again. Okay, he had a good one: watching his favorite soccer team win. Alright, time to scare the dementor. He took his wand out of the bushes and lighted up the place so he could see if the dementor or whatever it was, was nearby. Nothing was there. Good. The slytherin stepped out and started walking again, thinking of his happy thought. Man, Dante should be here to help him or at least for company. This labyrinth wasn't been very fun.

And then, the dark figure appeared again. He was sure it was dementor. Maybe.

Hugo was ready, happy thought in mind and wand pointing at the dementor. Dementors were really...intriguing. But he had no time to think about that. He had to cast a spell and do it right so he could tell his parents and Marigold. Hehe. He was going to impress her with that.

The dementor was getting closer and closer and his hand was shaking. He thought again about his soccer team winning and tried to feel very excited and happy and with a circular movement, he talked loudly "Expecto Patronum!!" he saw a glimpse of white light coming from his wand but it wasn't enough and started to ran. Again. It didn't matter if the dementor was fake, he didn't want a kiss from that thing.

Jenna headed straight for the maze now, not wanting to second guess herself. Obviously there wasn't anything to be afraid of, especially since the professor had told them ahead of time what they would face, but it was still just a little intimidating. Not that she would admit that.

There was no point thinking about it anyway because she'd reached the entrance and was heading on in...and felt like she'd walked into a completely different place with all the trees and bushes and things. Interesting. She kinda wanted to learn how to do this sort of thing now too.

But first, the Patronus Charm and getting through this maze successfully - that was what her focus was supposed to be. So she continued on, taking a right, then left, right, straight ahead, and another right...

And suddenly, darkness.

Merlin, that was actually pretty startling. One moment she could see ahead just fine - the next, it was like all the lights had suddenly gone out. After blinking a few times and trying to get her bearings, she remembered what she was supposed to do - use the Patronus charm.

Jenna paused, taking a deep breath to steady herself and bring her memory back into her mind. Then she moved her wand in a circular motion and said, "Expecto Patronum."

Nothing yet...so she tried again. Deep breath, focus... "Expecto Patronum."

The faintest of wisps appeared, but fortunately it seemed to be enough, and the darkness faded away. She squinted a little to let her eyes readjust to the light, moving forward carefully.

Who knew which challenge it would be next.

Lux was definitely the strong and capable type of person; there was no need to be concerned! Flashing a bright smile enlivened by their lit wands, the fourth year continued to trudge along the dark path, trying hard not to shiver at the the forthcoming coldness. It was growing slightly chiller as they walked forth, was it not?

Natalia slightly chuckled at her companion's clever comment. "I guess the lesson is: don't estimate the little things!" Perhaps the professor was just messing with them; there weren't any signs of dementors or lethifolds all this while they had been striding through the labyrinth. If there were any, they should have encountered one or two by now? The biggest obstacle that she saw thus far was, of course, the stupid tree root.

Focus on the person who makes you the happiest.

The Lioness gave a little nod to show her general understanding of Lux's explanation, but she was still a little befuddled by the idea of thinking about a happy memory: how exactly could a memory have such a dramatic effect on the result of the spell? Perhaps it was best not to dwell on the question she could not answer and focus on finding a happy memory. But did Natalia even know a person who really made her happy? Well, more essentially, what was happiness, exactly?

That was a perfect reason as to why Natalia could sometimes never reach the next level of understanding: she was too curious and too much of a logician; her adamance to logic and details prevent her from reaching that kind of abstract sense.

Natalia doubted she would ever be able to conjure a patronus.

A DEMENTOR.

The first feeling Natalia immediately felt toward this creature was intimidation, despite that it was not essentially the real deal. It wasn't that she was necessary afraid (which was also non-existent in the Gyrffindor dictionary, by the way); it was just that she could understand why these creatures were to be feared, yet her legs were steady and her eyes were open wide. It was scary, but she wasn't scared; there was a difference. Natalia kept repeating inside her head that it was not real, only a fraud. She was too taken aback to devise any plans of attack. Fortunately though, Lux came to the rescue!

"That patronus was SO GOOD." It drove the scary fake dementor away so quickly! So, that took care of it! Natalia did not have to perform ANY MAGIC and Lux would just take care of it all for the both of them. Yep.

The route, eventually, led to a brighter path where it didn't seem as gloomy anymore. Perhaps the worst of their fears was already behind them. Perhaps.

Yeah, well that perhaps didn't come as hoped. Quickly after the two encountered their first true obstacle, they encountered... another.

A dark, formless figure, similar to the one they saw before, glided over the ground like a ghost toward the two standing witches. Uhh...

Go Lux, go! Natalia silently prayed.
Even though it hadn't been a real Dementor, that didn't matter to Lux. She felt really PROUD of herself because she had cast an almost fully-formed Patronus.

As Nat praised her, Lux blushed. "My new strategy seems to be working really well!" It probably helped that not only was Bay the person who made her happiest, but he also made her feel safest. Maybe if Nat focused on that as well, she would have a lot better luck with her Patronus. Unless the only issue was that she wasn't confident enough???

"Do you want to try practicing a little as we walk?" It might help her feel better about her casting ability.

That was when the stinking Lethifold showed up....

Of course. -_________-

TIME TO GET YOUR BUTT KICKED!!!!

Wand at the ready, Lux focused all her energy on focusing on her happy memories. It became easier and easier each time she tried to do it. [b]"EXPECTO PATRONUS!!"[/s] This time... this time there was an actual SHAPE to her Patronus. "Look, Nat!! I did it!!"

Amazed, she watched the silver lion attack the lethifold before both disappeared.

Did he just call him James? "Okay!" he said and as he approached watched Adi run and jump over and tumble forward. He...wasn't going to be able to jump that far? Was he? Running jump, yep. He started running himself and jumped.

*SPLASH* MERLIN! And soaked with muddy water. Yep, made it halfway and splatted in the center. Standing there dripping and walked to the other side. That hadn't, exactly went well. He blew some water from his face and sighed shaking his wand to shake the water off it. "Err...no, I think I'm go..." He squeaked as he saw the figure approaching them now. Dripping still he 'Torie' he muttered to him. No, not Jay. MERLIN! He swallowed as he stared at it but focused finally on the memory. That thing was scary! AND HUGE! "EXPECTO PATRONUM!" he cried out circling his wand at it and a poof of silvery fur appeared and faded.

The lethifold vanished as Torie stood there his eyes still wide.

He kept moving ducking under branches as they appeared as he headed for the exit. Jumping over a log he had his wand out though he wasn't sure what spell he'd use if something happened. Finally he emerged from the maze and sighed with relief before grinning at Adi "we made it!"

Woops! Had Torie splashed himself with water? Muddy water to be exact. Adi had just enough time to add it to his brain to use the Scouring charm and Hot Air charm on the boy when they were out of the maze when his attention was taken by the Lethifold.

Yesh, yesh, Adi knew. He probably looked like an idiot lying on his stomach there but he was giving Torie (yes, he realised he had been mixing up the brothers' names and this maybe this had nothing to do with Adi's RPer who was the one actually getting mixed up ) a chance to have a go at thing. Annnnd Torie delivered! WOOT! Man, look at his cast that silvery stuff! Adi was envious and proud at the same time of his badger.

As the 'Lethifold' retreated, the sixth year jumped to his feet. "That was awesome, Torie!'' The little dude was going to be a great wizard someday. Mhmm.
..................

"Right behind you!'' Adi had his wand at the ready still as he hurried after James through the darkness and in the process stumbling over the same log that Torie had jumped over. "Woah! Lumos!'' Let there be light... and there was light! Adi quickened his pace as Torie lead the way out of the maze. "We sure did!'' The older puffer came to a stop beside his friend. "Great spell work in there, Torie!'' Seeee? He got the name right this time. Hehe. "Now hang on while I get you dried off.'' Cue the use of those two charms!

Okay, no dementor yet.

"Nox," he whispered, rolling his eyes at her dramatics but complying regardless. Going from darkness to bright Lumos light was never fun. "You oka- oh," Benzi's relief was short lived it seemed as two large cloaked figures glided towards them.

It seemed Puck noticed them too. Two. One for her, one for him. Taking a deep breath, and trying to NOT be phased by that very corporeal patronus, Benzi brought forth that memory of sitting and reading stories. Or.. hang on, Jake had also read him stories. It had been their little secret, because Benzi had insisted he was too old for stories.

"Ex-expecto patronum," his voice unsteady and his hand movements sloppy, Benzi visibly deflated as the weakest of wisps appeared out of his wand. The dementor didn't even seem tickled.

Back to his go to memory then. First night in London. No Jake then. Come on Rider, you got this. "Expecto PATRONUM!" much louder, more confident, and with that little smile the memory never failed to give him. The silvery-white disc erupted from his wand and made short work of the dementor, repelling it until he and Puck were once again alone in the passage.

... "You okay?" he asked, allowing the charm to fade. He hadn't seen her in... well, since that time. Somewhat of an awkward place to meet again.

Puck was about to turn to talk to Benzi when she saw it. The faux creature’s robes were moving as it crept closer and closer to her. The billowing cloak shifting just slowly enough to be utterly eerie in the darkness. Still, it was just lucky that it had to pass over…well no through the rock in order to get to her.

To them.

“Expecto Patronum” she cast again quietly this time and she watched as the protective shield formed guarding them from the encroaching lethifold. When it was gone, she just turned to Benzi and shrugged.

“I…” she gulped, and stared at the maze for a moments time. “I’m alright,” she informed him, her tone almost clipped as she spoke. It wasn’t anything that he had done, it wasn’t even about the awkward the last time they saw each other. It was something else. She was standing there feeling exposed. “I just, this class has been draining” she frowned and shrugged her shoulder. “A-are you okay?” She asked her voice somewhat shaky as she spoke. Had he heard her claiming that she missed her?

“ugh…before you answer or after it doesn’t matter,” she shrugged and glanced up at him. “I’m sorry if I made you feel awkward in there with the whole talking to myself thing…it kind of happens every time I cast a Patronus or…well, it might be what happens when Dementor’s appear.” She shrugged and glanced up at him.

“I…just miss family….” She admitted as she turned and began to climb over the rock the lethifold had passed through. It didn’t mean she wouldn’t talk to him she just wanted to get out of the maze and never face a Dementor again. “my mum especially…she’s – she died. A long time ago.” She finally muttered out before climbing to the other side of the rock and waiting for Benzi well…if he wanted to get out of the Maze that was.

This was one of those times when he wasn't sure how the kid was going to react. At first, he thought Greyvson might be one of those students to throw her wand against the floor and walk out. She looked...frustrated. Beyond frustrated. Thinking way too much.

He was making his way over to her, when things started changing. Her mood, her countenance, everything. She was finding a memory. Sabel paused to watch, more impressed by the moment. When her dragon patronus showed itself briefly, his concerns were gone, replaced by a proud smile.

"Very good Miss Greyvson. Keep with that memory, work with it. It'll become easier."

Progress, the young Ravenclaw was making really good progress. And not giving up. Nothing and then little wisps of smoke were enough to keep her going, to keep her determined. He nodded unneeded encouragement as he passed by. "Excellent work Miss Guidry. Very well done."

SPOILER!!: Sophie and Toby

He was relieved to say, that Fuller-Thompson seemed to be doing a bit better. That, or he was good at using masks. But Brown seemed to be doing a good job of encouragement, and what was better than a student-friend who understood you, to help you with such a thing?

He clapped the boy on the shoulder once more before moving off with a nod and a smile. It wasn't long after his departure however, that he noticed Fuller-Thompson was suddenly at one end of the room and Brown was .....

"Uhm...yeah. Of course. Do what you...need to do." Suspicion, he had it, but now was not the time or the place. His eyes drifted from the retreating Brown to the dejected Fuller-Thompson and he let out a breath. Break time soon. Very soon.

There were a lot of closed-eyed thinkers. But Xanthopoulos didn't have any veins buldging on her head or sweat beading on her brow, so he slipped by her quietly, not wanting to disturb whatever thoughts she was focussing on. As long as they were good thoughts. Gooood thoughts, Miss Xanthopoulos. Gooood thoughts.

SPOILER!!: Natalia

So humming did help? Well fancy that! "Maybe I'll try it one day." You know, if he was having a particularly bad day and hard time casting his patronus. Maybe. Humming, who knew.

Sabel gave the fourth year an encouraging smile. "Keep up the good work. And don't worry about the others."

As he walked away, he was amused to hear her practicing the spell. The different forms of the incantation reminded him much of when he had been a fourth year, trying to wrap his tongue around all the Latin words. The 'stepping on my toe' was his particular favorite out of her attempts.

Sabel could see the boy's confidence draining from a mile away. A question rising after the second try. "Lecium, keep trying. If you've got a memory you think will work, keep trying. The charm won't necessarily come on your first few tries."

HA! Someone had been minding his words carefully. Good. Very good.

He returned the cheeky grin and nodded. "Dully noted, Miss Gusey." He stayed where he was for the moment, watching her wand movement and the concentration on her face, which turned into a prideful-joy at success.

Granted, he was grinning pretty broadly too. "You did! Fantastic work. Must be some memory." She got an eyebrow wiggle for that, a 'sure-you-don't-want-to-tell-but-I-know-you're-not-going-to' eyebrow wiggle, before he moved off.

McGee looked like she was doing okay. Thinking a lot, but okay. That was, until she tried the spell.

Merlin these kids. Did they think they were going to get it first go? But then, granted, he could understand the disappointment at finding a happy memory, only to discover it wasn't working.

With a sigh, Sabel made his way over to the seventh year and gave her shoulder a nudge. "It's an uphill battle Miss McGee. Don't get discouraged. You'll get it. You all will."

Why was he so confident? Because he had to be. Because this was important to them. Because this, could one day save their lives.

SPOILER!!: Norah

***

Norah didn't move from the position she was stuck in after casting the spell. Well, more like attempting to cast the spell but y'know what that wasn't the point. The point was that she was stuck with her arm sticking out and her eyes on the floor because even if she wasn't actually stuck she didn't really want to move again because that'd mean another try. Normally she'd be all for more tries, because when did she ever get a spell in one try? But today was different for some reason that didn't make a whole lot of sense but it was different and she could FEEL all the differentness.

She shut her eyes tight, wishing she could open them again and suddenly be invisible, except when she opened her eyes it was very obvious that she wasn't. Could she do ANYTHING today? With an absolutely positively ginormous sigh, she repositioned herself to try again. Norah knew she couldn't do it. She'd known this whole entire time. She was never ever going to have an animal friend like Sophie. With another deep breath she tried to bring her mind back to the day with Marcel and Sebby, feeling the baby skin against her own and breathing in the smell of outside and seeing Sebby's big blue eyes all impressed. But this time the old memory thoughts were fighting the ones in the present, like they were sword fighting in her brain or something. Normally that'd be cool to imagine but it wasn't the point anymore. The thoughts of youcan'tdoityoucan'tdoit were BEATING the memory, which meant the memory wasn't good enough but it was her bestest one and it wasn't good enough. C'mon c'mon c'mon, Sebby and Marcel and pretending and outside. C'MON. "Expecto Patronum." Her circular wand movement came out shaky. Nothing happened, but Norah thought it was a bigger sort of nothing than last time. She slid down and sat cross-legged on the floor, pulling her bag towards her to take out a bottle of sparkly ink and laying her wand on the floor. She dipped her index finger into the ink and smiled softly as she drew swirlies and flowers on her arms. See? Sparkles could do anything.
Text Cut: Individual responses - replies within

He was glad she asked, because it was a point of clarification he had not thought to make. And it seemed to help the girl. He watched as she sat down and really got to thinking. There was a distinct moment when the memory of choice came to her, a change in her entire countenance. He had a feeling, that one would stick.

Even if there was no charm from the tip of her wand, there was the potential. There was the memory, and that, was the hardest part. "You've got the memory. Now, all you need is belief in yourself."

Did he mention that was important? Cause, it was.

Not sparklies like she had deviated too. Really? But she had been doing so well. Then again, he couldn't say much. He had told them to take breaks if they needed it. And perhaps it was time for a change of pace.

Good. Someone who knew their boundaries.

Sabel nodded to Ashcroft and moved to let her have her breather.

Another thinker, but another non-distressed thinker. Good, very good. Miss Wright got a faithful smile as he passed. She could do this. They all could!

He thought he heard something, a mutter of some sort from over his shoulder. He paused to look back at Fullmer, a frown quirking on his brow. It was hard to tell, the kid was back practicing the spell, albeit a bit quieter this time. But at least he was trying again.

Unsure of what he had heard, Sabel moved off. Was it something to do with last names again? Maybe he should just start going by first names. But then habits.

Sabel had to laugh at Carrington's excitement, not because it was funny but because her joy and pride at seeing her patronus starting to take form was contagious. "I did indeed. Very well done, Miss Carrington."

Sabel was starting to suspect that for some students, the practicing of the technicalities of the spell were more of a diversion and tool of procrastination, than a needed feat. The wand movement and the spell were rather simple, but it was the memory where their faces changed. Usually not for the best.

It was surprising to him how many students were having a hard time finding a happy memory. Or maybe it was simply they thought they needed something uber happy, and nothing they had would do. They were, still young after all. Still had a lot to learn and experience. Hopefully good.
Passing by, he gave the young girl a smile. "Relax. You might scare those good memories away."

Despite her facing the wall, Miss Burton's success wasn't lost on him. It was impressive, highly so. And he couldn't really say he was surprised. Pleased, but not surprised. From the get-go, she had been one of the students who had seemed to instinctively deviate towards a strong memory. And he hadn't noticed her having the questioning, second-guessing brow twitches either.

Moving past her, he grinned. "Beautiful work Miss Burton."

Rider was another one of those students he was keeping an eye on. Especially the way the kid eyed Fuller-Thompson with...longing? At least he was willing to give the charm a go, without completely discarding it.

Not to say that it seemed to do any wonders for him. Despite his admirable progress, Rider seemed more inclined to give up to whatever was eating him, than hold onto the memory he had found. Curious and concerning. More concerning when the kid clearly demonstrated that he would have nothing else to do with this lesson.

Sabel let out a breath, and on his way past paused, not looking at the kid but speaking to him pointedly nonetheless. "You did good. That was a very strong non-coporeal patronus. Don't feel you have to do anymore if you can't." Again, he didn't so much care about the success of the lesson as making sure the kids at least had working knowledge of the charm. "Why don't we have a chat later?"

Because something was bothering him, and while he wouldn't push Rider to divulge, he did want the boy to know that there were people he could talk to.

Sabel didn't miss Zeke's grin, and he couldn't help but roll his eyes. Kids these days.

Admittedly, he was a bit surprised that the patronus wasn't an instant thing on Browne's casting. The boy understood the spell, understood what memories were required and had appeared to have chosen a good one right off the bat. Perhaps it was the distraction of chocolate. He was going to go with that, because chocolate frogs were apparently a thing.

There was relief though, when the young boy did get something. Goodness knew he didn't need a Browne joining a Fuller-Thompson and Rider. And the other Brown, where was she?

Benny was proving to be one of those quiet, thoughtful types. And Sabel didn't mind. Less drama for the classroom was much appreciated.

He nodded at the kid's prononuciation and wand form. Both looked to be really good. Now, all he needed was a memory. Did he have one, he wondered?

If any kid in the room needed a happy memory, or a reason to be happy, they should have watched Hanover. The girl was pratically the definition of happy. A bubbling, bright ball of happy. It made him grin.

Admist all the negative emotions that were floating about, it was a breath of fresh air to see a student finding so much freedom and happiness in their patronus. This was what it was about. This was how patronuses worked.

Except, the thought tickled against the back of his mind, how would she do against something dark? The thought troubled him and he shoved it away for congratulations. "Excellent work Miss Hanover. Very nicely done!"

Mordaunt's reference had him laughing. The kid reminded him of himself back in his younger days, except for him, it was Lord of the Rings. But Star Wars, that was definitely a thing. He arched an eyebrow, trying to be all serious-business. "Good, because one day, you might be someone's only hope."

It was a joke, but the truth behind it nagged at that unnerving thought. This time, it was easily dispelled by the successful cast of yet another coporeal patronus. "Fantastic!" His own otter patronus darted over and scampered about through the bears legs, zigzagging this way and that. "Hold tight to that memory, Mr. Mordaunt. It's a powerful one."

As he passed by Valentine, Sabel noted the creases in her brow and the general troubled nature of her eyes. Either she was thinking or she was....thinking. Best to let one .... well ... think.

"Let me know if you have any questions." In case she was thinking of a question he might have an answer to.

It was easy to get the hint to move on. The lack of eye contact, the lack of speaking. Best to just, move on here too. Whatever thoughts the little snake was having, they were important to her and didn't require his interference.

He did check back after a few minutes though, pleasantly surprised to see a wisp of smoke from her wand. So, she had found a good memory. He gave her a thumbs up, because that was less disturbing than speaking, right? Right.

Despite the gum incident, Sabel was starting to like Toussaint. Practical, down to business, no muss no fuss. And he didn't have any of that conflicted-brow-syndrome that was going on.

Pausing to admire the sea lion patronus, Sabel made a mental note of Toussiant's progress. His smile widened at the request, and he nodded. "By all means. I encourage it."

He wasn't normally a jumpy fellow, but Whitlock's jump had him jumping too. Alright then, be careful around thoughtful students here. Merlin, did they not pay attention to their surroundings. Auror habits, he reminded himself.

Thankfully, the kids shock didn't make him deaf. Sabel nodded. "Like those. They don't have to be specific, they can be of a person or a group of people, with many memories comprising that single idea."

Did that make sense? He hoped so.

As for the face? Sabel laughed, shaking his head. "I don't think so either. Good try though."

With that he moved off, leaving the boy to his own devices for a time. There was progress, and then there was backwards progress and then there was a bit more progress. Two steps forward, one step back type deal. Sabel let out a breath and waved his finger in a circle motion. "That last one, the last memory you used was stronger. Try to expand upon it. Don't worry about anything else but it."

Easier said than done, but for now, where it was safe, that was all they had to do.

It was like watching someone doodle. Except with their wand in air, rather than on paper. Perhaps the kid was really lost in his thoughts, but the almost blank stare at his wand hinted otherwise.

Sabel wanted to push up the corners of his own mouth with his two fingers to try and encourage the kid to smile, or laugh or something, but good thoughts and memories couldn't be forced. And really, he didn't know what was going on in that brain. Hopefully, there was some memory diving of some sort.

SPOILER!!: Cutty

***

Expecto Patronum." Cutty gave the spell another go, the thoughts of Puck were merging with the events of that and other days and soon the pleasurable sensation was radiating outward through to his hands. The wisp had whirled out in a giant napkin-like sheet of the cloudy material and found it's way over to Agatha Hapgood.

Cutty followed it with his sight, then seeing Agatha there and remembering her...issues, he cut his spell. His smile faded a bit and he realized that getting her to do this particular spell would not be like the times before. With the inciting her anger so that her intention was strong. Nope. But it needn't be difficult. He waited and then found the opportunity to lean in for a whisper, something he knew she'd find great amusement in, if not outright pleasure. They were not too different, he and Agatha.

Then he heard Benzi's voice...saying only half of the spell. He wouldn't have minded telling Benzi the secret as well, but somehow he doubted it would make him as happy as it could potentially make Agatha. Benzi had a purer heart. "Hey, Benz. Remember that time Fairn fell over on the boats when we were on our way to the castle?" If he recalled Fern had gotten a knot in the forehead as well.
He caught the laughter of Morduant, but wasn't sure what was so funny. A good memory maybe? It would be helpful, and it seemed to be helpful, whatever it was.

Sabel tried to ignore the nagging sensation he was getting at the back of his mind watching the kid. Something just seemed...off. But he couldn't really put his finger on it, and Merlin if teenagers weren't full of weird and 'offness' to begin with.

So as he passed by, he gave the boy a nod and a smile. "Good work."

Though the whispering and the comment got an arched eyebrow. This one, he made a note to watch out for this one, for completely different reasons that some of the other students.

SPOILER!!: Ruby and Gabriel

While he wanted the students to try and focus on their own memories, their own patronuses, he couldn't well ask them not to help each other. Or try to be encouraging. Especially not when some of them looked so down. Especially when it came to the Banner boy.

So, once his offer was acknowledge, he gave Miss Banner a small smile and then the both of them a wide breadth of the privacy issue. He was relieved that the young girl hadn't pressed the D'Isigny issue. That, would be his happy thought for the day.

"So, one memory is usually the most helpful, but it can be generalized or grouped." A summary of his answer, albiet possibly more confusing. Hopefully it made sense to the young girl.

Sabel stepped back and watched as she tried for her patronus. His grin grew at the sight of the mist that then, on the second try, turned wall. "Very good! That's a great start. Seems like you've got a good memory in mind."

Sabel did his best not to sigh. They were still on the chocolate issue, weren't they? Merlin's beard...

"I have no doubt you do, Miss Valentine, but my rule is there for a reason. So, you'll just have to mind your energy, or make sure you have a good, healthy meal before class." Breakfast. That big, important meal of the day. Remember?

As for happy thoughts, he nodded slowly. "It will enhance your thoughts, yes, but not because of the memory you have. Because of the chocolate. You should learn how to do it without the chocolate, because you're not always going to have time to grab a piece of chocolate to get that bit of extra happiness." Although, then again, maybe there was the possibility that was how some wizards got their patronsues. He wasn't going to suggest the idea. It would result in no small amount of trouble. The answer was simple. Not in his class.

Admittedly, he rather hoped she would get a patronus something on her first try. Then maybe she wouldn't be so inclined to depend on the chocolate. Sadly, it wasn't to be. Still, he gave her a smile. "Keep at it. You'll get something." Maybe...stop thinking about frogs?

He was relieved to see yet another eager face among the students. One that appeared to approach the task with excitment, rather than fear. Hopefully, he wouldn't see her face fall into darker thoughts as she delved into her memories.

Not like some of the other students....

That was the least convincing thank you he had ever recieved. And only for the reason that what he had said, really didn't seem to help. Sabel let out a sigh, trying to think of something else to say but then closed his mouth. Clearly, she needed some time alone.

And if anything was important while casting a patronus, or at least figuring it out, it was time to think. So he stepped back and moved off a ways. He checked over his shoulder a few times, to make sure she hadn't curled into the fetal position, and on his third check he stopped. A smile over took him.

Well would you look at that? As much as he wanted to say something, he let it be. She would notice, eventually. And if she didn't, either he or someone else would tell her. For now, she needed to stay in that memory.

This one didn't freak out at the hand-on shoulder. Good. That made him feel a bit better. And the acceptance? Brilliant.

"Good. And you will get it." So nothing to worry about there.

Alright, definitely time for a change of pace. The class was getting, moodier than moody.

Moving back to the front, Sabel raised his voice to get everyone's attention. "Awesome work so far, everyone. I know it might not feel like much progress, but everyone of you should be proud of what you've accomplished today." Including those that had not really accomplished anything and had given up.

Everyone had at least tried and to him, at the moment, that was all that mattered.

"We're going to do something a bit different now." He guestered back at the labrynth. "This is a maze, a course that you are free to run through. The objective is to make it out to the other side. Along the way you'll encounter three challenges." Start with the less scary first, yes? "At some point in the maze, you'll come across a completely dark passage. The goal is to get through to the other side. The other two are a dementor-APPEARING figure and a Leithfold-APPEARING figure. Mind you neither are real and they can NOT harm you." So no one freak-out, okay? "It will be nothing like encountering the real thing," Merlin forbid, "but I would like you to try and see if you can use your patronus against them."

Because he had a feeling some students might find their patronus in the grip of an encounter, rather than sitting around trying to think happy.

"For both tasks, try your patronus. It doesn't matter how much of a patronus you get. If you manage even a wisp, the illusions will leave and the dark corridor will become bright. If you can't, don't worry. Use another spell for the tasks. A shield, a light charm, stupify, whatever you would like." He looked around, gauging the reactions. "I know normally these spells wouldn't work, especially against a dementor or lethifold, but we're not interested in that right now. For now, I just want you to problem solve and see what you can do."

Stepping to the side, Sabel glanced at the labrynth. "Feel free to help each other out. And if you get scared or lost, just holler. I'll hear you and come get you."

Tucking his hands in his pockets, Sabel let out a breath. "For those of you that would prefer to stay here and practice your charm, you are more than welcome. This is your time. Ask me questions if you have any."

And that was it. It would be interesting to see who went into the labrynth, and who didn't.

---------------

OOC: Main activity time!!!

So pretty simple. You can do either task: practice the patronus or go through the labrynth. Minimum of 3 posts please.

Also keep in mind the dementors and leithfolds, as Sabel said, are NOT real. They may look similar and act similar, but they are muted versions of the real thing. They are just representations, and Sabel doesn't want to scar any students for life XD

Feel free to RP together or separately. And you can add little challenges of your own too, if you like. There are trees, so you can assume there's going to be some bush, some water, maybe a few rocks to climb over here and there.

Most importantly, have fun! VM/PM me if you have any questions. Class will close sometime in the early morning of the 21st (GMT time). So approximately 39 hours from now.

Ethan BEAMED. That line…that all too familiar line of Princess Leia to Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ethan let out a series of whistles, copying the famous pop culture icon, R2-D2. Hehehehehe! If he is to go as far as the movie though, he could easily adapt the plot to real life. What if he just might be someone’s last hope, yeah? What if…what if something happens to his family, and he’s the only able wizard to save them all? Ethan knew that was highly unlikely, given the reputation of his family, but, he knows within that he should slack at things like…developing his magic.

---

The moment his patronus came out of his wand, and took the form of a polar bear, Ethan could not help but smile at the sight. “I…shall professor.” He need not say more. He knew that his memory IS a powerful one. That memory literally gave back life to him, did he know? The Slytherin watched as Professor Dakest’s otter patronus interacted with his. How cool is that? Ethan willed his patronus to catch the other patronus zigzagging between its legs, and his polar bear ended up tumbling down…and shaking its head.

“Is it…possible to control my patronus’ movement, professor?” he said as he blinked and lost his concentration, and the form of the polar bear cub dissipated into nothing. Finally getting the hang of things, Ethan went back to step one, and conjured his patronus once more. “Expecto Patronum!” his patronus reappeared, this time, it egg-rolled out of his wand. Well, would you look at that? Even his patronus is a comical one!

Once in the maze, Benny was well aware that the three challenges were going to likely come out of nowhere. Not that he could see much anyway, between shadow and the trees and underbrush to try and prepare himself for something. And now that he thought about it, Benny wasn't sure if each of the three things they were supposedly going to come across would happen in a specific pattern or not. Here's to complete uncertainty...though at least his wand was in his grasp and raised in readiness.

Be brave and think happy thoughts. And then he'd be halfway there, both calm about any surprises and with ammunition to get the spell to work. Benny thought he heard ragged breathing as he got to a certain point within the maze and as he turned a corne there was a chilly breeze before he was greeted with his first obstacle. A dementor.

Happy thought...happy memory.

This time it was a bunch of memories of his besties and him all together enjoying themselves. "Expecto Patronum!" he cast with exclaimation. The wisp appeared again, thoigh this time maybe a little brighter but it didn't win to send the dementor away. Benny strengthened his focus on the memories, picking out bits of happy context and tried once more. "Expecto Patronum!" The dark creature fled from the growing sinewy for of magic emmited from his wand.

"Yes!"

Xavier had carefully made his way through the dark passageway, but exactly as he came into the light there was a dementor in front of his face. He stumbled back in a panic. "Ahh! Exto- Extopolus!" No, that wasn't right. "Expecto Patronum!" More surprising than the dementor was the thin film of silver that appeared to be coming from his own wand. It was barely visible, but it was there.

Clearly it wasn't enough to do anything because the dementor-thing was still approaching. Xavi didn't know enough spells yet for anything to be effective so he kicked wildly at the thing. Which of course, did nothing, but provided him the chance to think. And with thinking he quickly realized that his natural response should not be fight. It should be flight. He skirted around the creature and took off running further into the maze.

There was a bit more noise coming from the labyrinth. A few more shouts, some bursts of light here and there. But nothing that tweaked his concern. No shouts for Circe or Merlin, which meant that so far, things were going relatively well. And there was no shimmer from the charmed labyrinth either. No disturbance to indicate that those 'quiet-terror' students were in a state of distress.

For now, he could spend a few more minutes with those practicing the patronus. Everyone of whom was doing exceptionally well. But the emerging of a few students from the maze reminded him that there was a time cap on the lesson, and it was quickly drawing to a close.

SPOILER!!: Toby

Toby had enough of his senses about him, however, to note that Professor Dakest was gradually making his way over. Well, he'd not quite realised that he was the intended destination, at least not until the professor had stopped right there and crouched down beside him.

Toby looked at him, maybe a little bit worried in spite of himself, but Dakest didn't seem angry, at least not in a way that was obvious enough for Toby to notice. That, at least, was a relief.

Helping people... That was something that Tobias would never, could never say no to. He looked off towards the entrance of the maze, cogs working in his head. Before he even realised what he was doing, Toby found himself nodding his head. Automatic response. Textbook Hufflepuff.

"I can't do the spell, though," he blurted out quickly, referring to the Patronus Charm. "And I can't... I don't..." A very long pause wherein Toby looked between Dakest and the labyrinth entrance a few times. "... there's Dementors." Little sense probably made, but the point was that he'd avoided going IN there because he knew he couldn't get past the obstacles, especially if you needed that spell to do it. "I'll just end up making things worse." The second he said it, Toby began mentally berating himself. He hadn't meant to be negative again, it had just... slipped out. He just wanted to be honest.

But... he hadn't said no. Hadn't taken back that nod. It was just a pre-warning that Tobias Fuller-Thompson was likely to be less than useless in that maze, no matter how much he fancied himself to be someone who could help anyone in need. He would, however, sit here and hope against hope that no such cry for help would come, for everyone's sake.

It was interesting the way the boy nodded, almost in agreement and then almost immediately seemed to protest the request, and his own decision. A small frown worked its way onto the corners of Sabel's lips as he considered the boy.

He understood fear. He understood hesitation. He understood it all. Maybe not the specifics of what were driving those things in Fuller-Thompson, but he had a good enough idea about how it felt. So, he wasn't unsympathetic persay, even though his simple cut tone and words might have alluded otherwise.

"Isn't it ironic, how excuses on how you can't help yourself end up as excuses as to how you can't help others?" Sabel's gaze returned to the maze and he pushed himself to his feet, intending to let the boy mull that over.

"I suppose the good news is, that no one seems to be in need of our assistance." He gave a clap to the boy's shoulder before moving off to make his last rounds of the class.

SPOILER!!: AJ

Really what she was getting at was that it was a stupid rule, but she obviously wasn't getting anywhere with Dakest. AJ sighed. "Yes, sir." Breakfast meant morning time and AJ was not an early riser. It was a super hard task just getting her to class on time so breakfast didn't always happen.

As the professor explained chocolate and its relation to happiness she still felt like her point was better, but what could you do? "When I'm out in the read world I'll just make sure to always have chocolate in my pocket." Yup, that was what she took from that little message. In case of a dementor attack... use patronus charm. If that doesn't work you nom chocolate and try again. Got it. Adi piped up and offered her half of a chocolate frog. What was she going to do with half of one? "Give me a whole one, and you got yourself a deal," she said as if she was really in the position to argue. Her boyfriend was always coming through for her. The way to this girls heart was through her stomach.

One of Sabel's eyebrows went up to her solution for the 'real world'. He was greatly tempted to remind her that she might want to line her pockets with plastic, but upon reminding himself of the words 'Professional' and 'Professor', he bit his tongue. Wrong place, wrong time. Best to just, nod and walk on. Which he did, at least relieved to see the denial hadn't broken her spirit.

SPOILER!!: Sophie

Would he be upset that she opted to help someone rather than go challenge her own skills? She... hoped he'd be cool with it, really. She and Dakest had only known each other for a couple months, but by now, certainly he knew that the maze wouldn't have been a problem for her, no? This here, helping a friend, was a much more beneficial use of her time. If he wanted, she'd make up for it and do the maze after class - but no, right now, this was the right thing to be doing.

As he made another pass through the class, Sabel caught Brown's eye. She was still helping Adair, which was more than fine by him. In fact, it was encouraged. There was often little better way to learn than from the support of friends and peers. There was an understanding and trust that could never be gained by his title.

He gave the young girl a nod, though he couldn't be entirely sure on what she was thinking. And guessing was often a dangerous game when it came to young people. So the nod, would have to do.

Sabel had to laugh at the R2-D2 impression. Really, how could he not?

And his grin stayed firmly in place as he watched the patronuses interact. He was proud of them all, for how far they'd come, for how hard they were all trying. He just hoped, they didn't end up loosing interest or faith in themselves, or the charm. It could be easy to do, and hard to undo.

But he wasn't too concerned about Mordaunt at the moment. His attention turned to the kid, and he had to think a moment before answering. "It is, in a way. Depending on intention and focus. Such control is often utilized when the patronus needs to carry a message. But you could probably manage it for other things." His patronus skittered back as the bear reappeared, going to try and hop on its back for a ride. "Otherwise they can kind of be left to their own devices, a mixture of the representative animal behavior and your internal thoughts, intentions and emotions."

----------------------------------------------

With more students coming out of the maze, and the practicing group as varied in emotions as it was, it seemed like now would be a good time to conclude the lesson. Walking into the center of the room, Sabel projected his voice, allowing it to echo through the labrynth and over the gathered students.

"Aright everyone, time to start packing things up for your next class. For those of you in the maze, take your next right and then left. It'll let you out at the back of the room. Come around and gather your things." Lovely thing about magic, charms in particular. They were so handy-dandy.

"As I said before, if you have any questions, or need any help I am more than willing. Come grab myself, or one of your classmates. You all did a fantastic job today."

And that was...it. Provided he didn't have to go into the labyrinth and rescue some ickle student who thought left was right and right was left.

-----------------------------------

Heya all!

Soooo that's a wrap. I'll be closing the thread in about 8 hours, so feel free to finish up the activities. As Sabel said, your student should be able to get out of the maze without much of a hitch.

Thanks so much for playing! Was a ton of fun. Homework will be posted in the next few days (or by Monday latest)

He did take a few moments to get up and dust himself off, and that was all because he really did hope he could face the lethifold again... unfortunately for him it didn't seem appear to be a possibility. Shame. Still, with his wand at the ready, Zeke continued through the maze contraption until he reached that other side. He was out, he was free.

AND...

He HAD made some progress with the charm. But he needed to keep working on it. Perfecting it. He wanted it to be REAL, corpoREAL. As far as he was concerned, he was practically failing, and failing wasn't an option.

Where was Sabel? He needed help!

Hearing the man's voice, Zeke followed the direction to where they had started originally, and was disappointed to hear that they had to pack up and leave. This had actually been super fun, and deadly useful. Sigh.

"Sa..... Professor Sabel," Zeke corrected himself, "... I think I still need help with this one, how do I know if I'm using the right memory? There are lots that are so similar and just..." yeah, WHICH ONE WAS THE ONE HE NEEDED TO FOCUS ON? "Or is it just me? I can get a shield happening, but it's not corporeal." Just another thing he needed to add to his list to work on.

Default Main activity post 3 (sorry it got so long...)
Lil' gooz | Sarangel | Junior Dweeb

Norah had sat down. Again. Except this time she wasn't on the floor and she wasn't playing with glitter or anything so really that was progress if you thought about it. Or maybe it wasn't progress because without the sparkly swirlies it wasn't apparent how she'd be able to get happy enough to cast this darn patronus anyways. That bit didn't even make SENSE because she had been much happier before she'd started trying to cast this spell, which was all sorts of counter-intuitive. She didn't even take a second to smile at the fact that she could use big words in her head and actually know what they meant. And THAT'S how she knew that this was a big big big problem. Stupid patronuses (or lack thereof) ruining everything. If only they weren't so CUTE.

She sat on top of her desk swinging her legs and beginning her attempt to regroup. Start fresh. All that jazz. That was what her mum told her to do whenever she tried to learn something new, and even though it hadn't really worked when she'd tried to learn to knit, draw stuff that didn't just look like blobs, plait her hair, or really ANYTHING else, it was going to work this time. She'd decided, and fourteen year old decisions were big enough to matter. The fourth year trained her mind to exciting things instead of looking at all the people going into the maze or making puffs of white come out of their wands. She thought of sparkles and hugs and kittens and camels and plants and swimming and getting all the way to the top of a tree. She thought of when she ran so hard the wind whistling past made her ears feel like they were going to fall off. She thought of the big chocolate cakes her mum would make her on her birthdays and being a detective with Hayden and when her potions turned out right and the first time she got to go to Diagon Alley all by herself. Norah swung her legs one last time as she thought and thought and thought about all of those things, before sliding off the desk and onto her feet again. She stood up tall with her wand in hand as she came up with more and more good thoughts that swirled around in her head like a tornado. As her eyes found Toby, she imagined that she could blow all those thoughts right out of there and so she did, because her imagination was in charge, remember? Fourteen year olds got to be in charge. Norah exhaled in Toby's general direction, imagining that he could catch some of the happy thoughts even if he was all the way on the other side of the room. That didn't matter.

She exhaled and exhaled until she started to feel dizzy but she didn't stop until there was only one thought left in there. The tornado was over and she had her memory. The Hufflepuff raised her wand as she let this memory take up the entire space of her brain again, but this time she didn't try to force it to be happy enough. She just let it be there, taking up space and making that space warm and lovely with images of little Sebby, baby Marcel, and all of them together with the book and the smiles and the pride and the peace and the power. She held her breath, not wanting to breathe this thought out like she had with the rest. "Expecto Patronum! With her mouth shut tight again, she traced a circle in the air with her wand which proceeded to clatter to the floor right after emitting the teeny weeniest puff of white vapor in the history of the whole entire universe. But guess what. It was THERE for a second before it disappeared and Norah's wand and jaw both fell all the way to the floor. At least her jaw was nearER the floor, anyways. Same difference.

Not bothering to pick her wand back up again, she climbed onto the top of the desk and pulled both knees up, now covering her mouth with both hands to keep from shrieking aloud. She did something. She made a whole entire teeny weeny puff of white vapor that was good for a grand total of zero things but that wasn't the point. The point was that she'd done something. Norah uncovered her mouth and used her hands to stabilize herself as she craned her neck to see if Professor Dakest had seen. She'd done something. SOMETHING. SHE'D DONE IT.

The Idea Man Kori-Kins

Angel was scared very scared now, why had she chosen to do the maze, seriously she had misjudged this one and what was it with the saying if your going to fail you might as well fail badly, well she was going to fail in style by the looks of things.

Angel was getting ready to cry here it was dark and very scary in this place. "Lumos!" Angel decided that she wanted some light, once it was light she realised she was at a dead end, this was just so scary now, she turned around and walked around for a bit... luckily she seemed to be avoiding the Dementors for now.

Angel suddenly saw light... how awesome was that, cancelling her spell she went towards it and realised she was at the end of the maze. "Let there be light." Angel was shaking and she hoped the Professor couldn't see the tears because she was trying to hide them... at least she had done it which was more than she had expected... she had made it to the end which was an achievement for her.

Things had gone relatively easily for a while after she’d gotten past the darkness, but then Brooklyn wasn’t about to relax yet. There were still at least two other challenges to get past, if Professor Dakest had been telling the truth. Not to mention, everyone else who had entered the maze. She could hear noises up ahead, but ignored them for the most part, continuing to go by her tactic of keeping her hand on the wall. At least, she could do that when there weren’t trees or bushes she had to loop around, along with the unexpected pool of water on the ground that reminded her of last term and the swamp invading. She didn’t have anyone to climb on for safety this time, but the puddle was easy enough to get around. At least she didn’t need a raft this time. There wasn’t anything in the corridor she could use to make one anyhow.

She’d kept walking forward, turning right where she could and left if there was no other direction to go. In all honesty, she was starting to get bored with it all, until she felt a faint cold seeping into her from up ahead. Not weather cold either, and she stopped for a moment to remind herself that there wasn’t any reason to be afraid. Nothing in her was real, and she could probably just knock the ‘dementor’ she assumed was up ahead over had she wanted to. Yet she hadn’t actually seen it yet. Maybe it was the pretend lethifold, but she didn’t think those messed with emotions.

Finally stepping forward again, she kept her wand pointed ahead of her until she saw the hooded figure. I’m not backing down, she thought, keeping that sentence in her head even as she went back to happy thoughts. Focusing on the first time she’d put on her ballet shoes, knowing it was something that her sister couldn’t do… “Expecto Patronum!” Her wand traced the now familiar circle, and she nearly smirked as a brighter bluish mist burst from the tip. She was getting better at it. All she had to do was find the right memory, but until then, back to following the maze hopefully til the end.

All Toby was seeing was that frown. It didn't have to be huge for him to notice it, in just the same way that Toby's parents' sighs and frowns only had to be miniscule to make him worry, and same with Soph, and Ella, and even Botros, and... yeah. He quickly looked away, back to his hands that had at one point gone back to fiddling with the thread again. Toby concentrated on that, finding it more productive than to focus on the feeling that he had been the one to make the patient Professor Dakest frown.

Isn't it ironic, how excuses on how you can't help yourself end up as excuses as to how you can't help others?

Toby wasn't sure if it was the words, or the tone, or the fact that these were the professor's parting words before he stood, or maybe a mixture of all three, but it hit him like a ton of bricks. He simply sat there for a moment, stunned into silence and stillness. And thank Merlin he was still looking straight down at his hands, because Toby suddenly didn't trust his eyes not to betray him in more ways than one.

The words were probably meant with the best intentions, perhaps to spur him into trying for other people's sake, but the only way Toby took it was as a sign of his total failure, and not the sort he could just brush off so easily. For reasons, Toby always put a lot of his self-worth into helping others. He was a Protector. And he'd failed today, because he'd tried to put his own needs first (which he very seldom did), and it hurt. It didn't matter that nobody had needed his help. He'd still failed. And now his sense of self-worth had just plummeted right through the floor.

The clap on the shoulder went almost unnoticed, but it did serve to jolt the Hufflepuff into action at last. As Dakest walked off to see to other students, Toby finally pushed himself to his feet. But rather than rejoin the main group, he walked quickly through the room, head bowed low as he ordered himself to let no tears fall just yet, and out the classroom door. Only when Toby knew he was clear of the classroom did he break into a sprint, down the corridor and out of sight.

The fake dementor had fled at the sight of the mist, and Brooklyn had wasted no time at all in moving forward again, her hand finding the wall yet again as she proceeded. There was no reason not to trust her plan of attack, after all. So far, it hadn’t failed her. She didn’t think she was irreversibly lost, anyway. She doubted the professor would allow her to be irreversibly lost. Not his first year teaching, and besides, Aurors were supposed to protect people. Maybe that was why he’d been hired, because of last term and Gregoire dying. The Headmistress had wanted protection at the castle. More than what the other professors could provide by themselves. It wasn’t as if she’d trust Professor Flamsteed with keeping her safe, or a few of the others. Maybe Professor Bellaire and Healer Murdoch though. They were strong, and besides, her House leaders.

Even as she’d continued that train of thought, she’d kept moving forward. Turning right when she could, or whatever direction the path veered. There had been a small pile of boulders in her path she’d had to climb over, but her hand had found its way back to the wall soon enough and she’d begun wandering if there in fact was a pretend lethifold in here anywhere. So far she hadn’t found it. Maybe tha t meant it wasn’t there.

Except, as she’d turned another corner, there was suddenly a pool of blackness ahead of her. Actually, not a pool. What looked a bit like a flying carpet, except inky black and oppressive, and she eyed it suspiciously. It didn’t look threatening, but neither had the swamp until last term. Both had inched closer to her, though, and she’d lifted her wand again. No time to waste. Momentarily wondering if the previous memory would work again, she almost forgot about the lethifold until she realized it was nearly on top of her.

She was not going to let a pretend dark creature kill her. Not Brooklyn Andrews. Not her. As the single word appeared in her head, the memory of when she’d been Sorted and had been so very happy she’d been somewhere else than her sister had been, she whipped her wand up above her, making the familiar circle motion as she loudly spoke. “Expecto Patronum!”

A bright mist burst free, still not anywhere close to a creature like the professor’s otter but much solider than any of her previous tries, and the lethifold fled. No, it vanished, and she abandoned her methodical approach to the maze. Running, she turned corners until she saw the exit. She’d found a memory, anyhow, but she was definitely done with this maze. She’d slowed down to a walk as she exited, though, just in time to hear that the lesson was over. Nobody had seen her lapse. Not at all. She'd gathered her things once she looped back around the outside of the maze, and exited with a nod to the professor. She'd just work on the spell on her own.

Luckily, the dementor did not pursue him further into the maze, so Xavi just kept running. He'd heard or read or something that if you always turned the same direction in a maze eventually you would get out. So left it was. Left. Left. Left. Waiting for the lethifold, whatever it was.

He was just starting to worry that he was lost when the professor called out that the activity was over. He said to turn left, then right, and that would lead him out of the maze. Was that true for everyone? Everyone at different points in the maze? Well, Xavi took him at his word, made the appropriate turns, and emerged into the classroom full of people who'd made it out faster than him. Probably because they knew that stupid light charm. He would have to ask someone about that. Or read up on it.

Regardless of being practically last, he was out of the maze and that was what counted. Besides, he'd made barely-visible filmy stuff that in a year he hoped would be a patronus! That was enough of a thrill to keep him from being upset at his slow progress.

dream until your • dreams come true ~ Human pygmy puff

Janelle was continuing on through the scary maze, when she heard the Professor's voice above her very loud heartbeat. The class was ending? She didn't know whether to be happy or disappointed that she hadn't encountered the leithfold yet. She could use more practice in a semi-real life situation, but she wasn't really looking forward to encountering a leithfold. The dementor was bad enough.

Following the Professor's instructions, she made a right turn at the next intersection. Still expecting something to leap out at her at any moment, Janelle kept her wand in a death grip. She kept walking until she was able to make that final left hand turn. Knowing that she was almost home free, Janelle decided to try the spell one more time. She thought her happy thought, made a circle with her wand and said, "Expecto Patronum" Her puff of silvery smoke was now becoming more like wisps that lasted just a little bit longer. She was not completely there yet, but she seemed to be making steady progress.......so that was good.

Just a few more steps and Janelle found herself outside of the maze. Not a moment too soon. Once she was safely outside, Janelle stopped and took a moment to gather herself. If that was make believe, she hoped she never had to see a dementor in real life. Once her pulse had returned to normal, more or less, Janelle made her way back to the other side of the classroom. She gathered her things and headed toward the door. As she neared the exit, Janelle called out, "See you later Professor. I'll keep practicing until I get it." This was one spell that she could not wait to master.

Zhenya made her way out of the maze, a huge grin on her face. But she did feel a bit tired. Maybe a sleep would be nice, actually. And as soon as she was out of the maze/labyrinth, Professor Dakest called an end to the lesson. Oh, so soon? Zhenya made her way over to where her things were and collected them, then walked past Professor Dakest. "Thanks for the great lesson, Professor. It was really... something extraordinary." It was, being able to practice, learn and cast the patronus charm.

Still a bit fluster from the dementor encounter she pushed herself to continue on. She watched every step she took making sure to step over any sticks or twigs trying to keep quiet.

Up ahead she took a left and then one more climbing up over a large rock that blocked the path up ahead. Only to jump down into a puddle of mucky water that reached her knees soaking her sneakers and pants. Letting out a deep sigh Hady wadded through it and back up onto the embankment. Gross. She had to keep going though that was the only way to finish and get out of here.

Brushing her hair from her face with the back of her hand she kept going holding her wand firmly in her hand. Around another left turn and through some brush, under a branch that snagged her hair causing her wince a little as she pulled her hair free. Stupid branch. Grumbling to herself she ducked down under another branch just in time to see the lethifold gliding towards her. A startled yelp escaped her lips as she stepped backwards into the tree.

There wasn't anywhere to go but forward. With a shaky hand Hady raised her wand drawing the circle motion over and over as she pulled up her happy memory holding onto it tightly, “Expecto Patronum!”

A bright bluish-white mist burst from the tip of her wand lighting up the air as it formed a shield around her, the lethifold vanishing instantly. The shock of the lethfold and then the bright shield from her wand taking her by such surprise she didn't even realize what she'd done until the shield disappeared just seconds later. Blinking several times she lowered her wand as she just stood there.

It wasn't a full patronus but it was way more then earlier! She'd managed the shield and know knew she'd be able to get it right with more practice. With a small grin she continued onwards until she reached the end and emeraged back out into the classroom.

As she grabbed her things from the floor by the wall she heard the Professor state the lesson was over. With her bag in hand she returned her wand to its holder and waved to the Professor. "Thanks for the lesson Professor, have a nice day." Now it was time for a much needed shower.

With the dementor done with Benny was ready to move onto the next challenge that might come his way. As he walked he wondered if perhaps he wasn't using the right memory..that it wasn't strong enough for the intentions of doing what he wanted to do. Momentarily lost in his thoughts and memories, the sixth year hadn't noticed right away that it had gotten progressively darker until her was really surrounded by darkness. It appeared he had stumbled upon the dark corridor as mentioned by the professor.

Steadying himself and the wand, Benny gathered his thoughts and happy feelings and tried again at his patronus. Please let this work, he mused to himself as he prepared for the casting. "Expecto...Patronum!" Incantation spoken, wand moved in circular motion as directed, happy thought in mind. This time it was of playing quidditch and being part of the team. In response, he was greeted with a considerabbly larger wisp and cloud that almost looked like it had a shape.

Woah!

It was enough to brighten the corridor that was for sure.

Norah wasn't going to try again. No way. That'd just be pushing her luck and she knew the tiny whisp of white was most definitely luck. There was no need to fail again, she was perfectly content with that tiny whisp.....mostly. She tried not to look as people came out of the maze with all their triumph, even though usually other people's triumph was even better than here it wasn't really that kind of day today. She'd blame that on the weather and nothing else.

When Professor Dakest announced the end of class, the fourth year stood quickly with her packed bag already on her shoulder. Wand. Riiiiight. She squatted to pick it up, trying to remember how good it'd been when she'd dropped it for doing something right. Funny how that never happened in class. Norah held tight to her wand as she walked past Professor Dakest and gave him a small smile, nowhere near as cheerful as at the beginning fk class but it was okay. It was going to be okay, okay? She wasn't allowed to not be okay. It was a rule. "Thanks for the lesson, Professor." She paused and looked at him, a shy smile slowly taking over the polite one that has been on her face. What a nice guy. Reminding herself that it wasn't polite to stare, she slowly turned around and walked out the door.

She needed tree climbing time and she needed it now. The great hall simply wouldn't do.

Happiness. He felt genuine happiness as he watched his patronus roll over the place, and kept on sustaining that ‘connection’ with his animal guardian, and his happy memory, which now became his core. Surprisingly, he did not feel exhausted at all after casting the patronus three times in a row, as he let that blinding, white energy inside him supply his patronus.

“I see...” obviously, he was still at awe with the recent revelation of his spirit guardian. But...a polar bear though? Ethan felt the need to ask WHY he got a polar bear for a patronus, but, just like what the Professor told them earlier, the differing opinion of his peers WILL corrupt his patronus. He didn’t want that to happen, thank you very much. What mattered at that moment was not the patronus per se, but the revelation of the power and strength of his memory. Ever since that fateful day, he knew that, for him, that moment was very special and sacred.

“I have this...theory professor,” Ethan started as he watched his patronus give the otter a bear hug. “In order to sustain my patronus, I suppose I shouldn’t invest in connecting with it physically...like...staring at it to make sure that it won’t go away, but rather, connect to it...emotionally...” Did he...make sense? “Like...how masters and padawans connect even if they’re lightyears apart? They have this...sort of ‘bond’ invested in the Force.” Oh maaaaan. Did he go overboard? “Sorry, I’m nerding out. Let me know sir, if my patronus will stay behind...” he did not even wait for Dakest to respond, and just went on to shut his eyes and turned his back away from the man and his patronus. As he did so, he reached out to his guardian emotionally...like...like, the Force.

“Did...did it work?” he called out.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

"There, Torie! You're all good as new.'' Well, as good as knew when he had entered the class. At least now Torie was free of mud and yucky water. Adi patted the boy on his back before shuffling over to his bag to pack up his stuff. Oh yeah! There was a certain girlfriend who needed a Chocolate frog. He would give her one as soon as he spoke to Dakest. Torie would be getting one too because he was an AWESOMEEE partner.

The sixth year approached the Professor. "HI, Professor!'' Cue the excited shifting from one foot to another. Gosh, it seemed to have become his habit! "I'm here to take you up on that offer.'' Had it really been an offer? Adi saw it that way. Hehe. Anyway, he got down to the point. "I can hardly produce a wisp so I can use all the help I can get.'' He was such a lame duck. No, a lame badger but maybe Dakest could schedule something soon?

Hearing the man's voice, Zeke followed the direction to where they had started originally, and was disappointed to hear that they had to pack up and leave. This had actually been super fun, and deadly useful. Sigh.

"Sa..... Professor Sabel," Zeke corrected himself, "... I think I still need help with this one, how do I know if I'm using the right memory? Just another thing he needed to add to his list to work on.

Sabel turned to Zeke's approach, a small smile touching his lips. "It'll take some time, and perhaps the right circumstance, to draw our your corporeal patronus. But if you have a sheild going," one of the big bursts of light perhaps, "then I'd say you have a really good memory, and you are well on your way to the coporeal form."

Glancing at a few passing students, Sabel thought for a moment before looking back at the kid. "Why don't you come grab me for some practice sometime, when you have a free moment in your schedule. I'll see what I can do to help."

Not that he was trying to convince the kid he wasn't out to fail him, but hopefully that helped just a little.

His attention was snagged by the young Valentine coming out of the maze. She looked rather...distraught. A dark frown was sent to the maze. Had he not put the charms in place well enough. Or perhaps, she was determined to get through it on her own.

Needless to say, he didn't like the expression on her. His otter patronus was by her side in an instant, bounding along in brilliant silvery light, doing a belly slide every now and then. "You did a fantastic job Miss Valentine. You should be proud."

And err...he was sorry if he frightened her?

He had hoped that his words would flick some sort of switch in Fuller-Thompson's mind. As it stood, when he glanced back to check on the boy, all he caught was a blank space of the wall and the kid's back retreating out of the classroom.

A heavy sigh left him and he scrubbed the back of his neck. Some of these kids....

She’d slowed down to a walk as she exited, though, just in time to hear that the lesson was over. Nobody had seen her lapse. Not at all. She'd gathered her things once she looped back around the outside of the maze, and exited with a nod to the professor. She'd just work on the spell on her own.

And there was another one that looked less than happy upon exiting the maze. He supposed he couldn't really blame them. Even if they were just illusions, the Dark Creatures could be rather ... jarring. Apparently more jarring than he expected. Or perhaps, he had just forgotten what it was like to be a kid.

He gave an encouraging nod to Andrews as she passed by. "Good work today."

And...how many would be going to the Headmistress about this lesson? Another sigh.

He was relieved to see another student looking a bit more excited and energetic than some of the others that had come out. "Good work today, Mr. Fullmer."

"Have a good day, Miss Guidry." Hope he didn't scare her too bad. "Let me know if you need any help or pointers."

Good to hear that the lesson would continue outside the classroom halls. Maybe the only thing he would hear from Truebridge was that there were suddenly a whack-load of corporeal patronuses running about the school, causing their own kind of terror. The thought made him smile. Now wouldn't that be something?

Zhenya made her way over to where her things were and collected them, then walked past Professor Dakest. "Thanks for the great lesson, Professor. It was really... something extraordinary." It was, being able to practice, learn and cast the patronus charm.

Sabel turned to Burton as she addressed him, his smile growing. Extraordinary lesson? Well alrighty then, he could deal with that.

"You did a fantastic job today, all of you. Keep up the good work." Keep your noses clean. Don't make us save you from something. All that good stuff. "Enjoy the rest of your day."

The third year got a warm smile and nod from him. "You did well, Miss Lynch. Have a good day yourself."

He had most definitely seen the progress made by Kittredge, and it made him grin from ear to ear. Or rather, it was her own, pure excitement that had him grinning like a goof. Dejection turned victorious. It was always heartening to see.

Though it was mixed with a note of unsettlement. Most of the students were hardly as happy as they had been at the start of the class. Were happy memories so...depressing? Really, he had to wonder at what went on in some of these kids minds.

"Have a good day, Miss Kittredge. And fantastic job."

SPOILER!!: Ethan

Folding his arms over his chest, Sabel watched the two patronuses interact with amusement. Now all they needed were a few more, and it'd be a patronus party.

His eyes slipped over to Mordaunt, the smile extending slightly. "I think that is a good theory, young Padawan." Cause really, Star Wars. He bit his lip to keep a 'the force is strong with you' response internalized. That would just derail them completely off topic.

He was impressed, to say the least, as the polar bear did say behind. "Working quite well Mr. Mordaunt. Why don't you keep practicing on your way to your next class?"

No, a lame badger but maybe Dakest could schedule something soon?

Sabel turned to the approaching Rehman, a smile touching his lips. "You did a fantastic job today, wisp or no wisp." True story. "Stop by my office when you have a spare moment, and I'll see what I can do to help."

Merlin, he might need to enlist the help of Brown and Mordaunt. Set them up as tutors or something. He put that thought on the backburner for now. "Until then, keep practicing."

As the last student left class, and all goodbyes were said, Sabel shut the door to the hall. For a moment, he turned and considered the maze. It looked bengin to him, harmless. But perhaps that was because he had created it. Hopefully, the students had learned something important. Even those that had proved less than enthusiastic about the lesson.

It took him a few minutes to disable to charms and spells that held the maze in place. Once it was all cleaned up and the hall looked like the normal practice hall again, Sabel left the room, leaving the door open for those students who wished to return to test their skills.
