Default Charms Lesson 2 - Capture the Fort!

____________________________

Though the class is taking place at it's usual time, bright and early 9 am, there is something very different about the location. What? Well naturally even the least awake among you would notice that instead of standing in neat rows in Classroom 2E you are all headed out by the rickety wooden bridge that leads to the rest of the grounds. The trek out here should be a good waker-upper for those that need it.

The scene is as unassuming as any other with the exception of the area getting warmer and warmer as you approach. Yes, the Professor has taken care of that pesky little weather hitch that happens at this time of the year while you're here out on the grounds. There is still a bit of fog lingering but it's expected to clear up or be removed by the time the activity rolls around. The air is crisp and has a freshness to it that you couldn't get even with the wide windows of the classroom back in the classroom flung open as they usually are.

A peaceful morning really.

As you cross the grounds and come to a stop at the bridge, you find the Professor leaning against the railing with his eyes cast down into the ditch that lies below the bridge. Might be he's looking at something. Might be you can see it to. Just might be he's bored and waiting for his students to arrive; there's really only one way to find out.

Gather around, the lesson will be beginning shortly.

OOC: Class has not yet begun, be sure to brief yourselves on the rules once more before posting. I'll be moving this class in about 12-18 hrs hopefully ^^

Boom. That was how it was done.
Make no mistake, he did hear the first of what would be a few approaching footsteps but the man had opted to keep his gaze fixed on the ditch below. He'd been down there earlier in the week to be sure everything was in check and he could already see the many ways it could go both right and wrong. The Quiggles, however, drew his attention immediately.

"Miss Brown, I'll thank you to not call me that." This was her third warning, light and all, there would be no fourth. It was unprofessional and as harmless as it was by nature he couldn't say he appreciated having students walking around calling him that aloud--even if they were alone.

That being taken care of, he allowed himself to finally take in the view of the barrel of apples and her smug look. All of them GREEN from what he could see. A wide grin spread across his face. "Thought you'd all but forgotten." This of course was an extra 5 points on the 5 anyone got for giving him apples. Starting to think there were some Ravenclaw motives behind this...even if she wouldn't have known. Huh. Whatever the case, the look on his face was undeniable. He was PLEASED. "You did good, kid."

He had to blink and double blink again. Surely his mind was playing tricks on him this early in the morning. He shook his head and then came to the conclusion he wasn't dreaming. The Professor changed the scenery. He wondered what the scenery was gonna be used for today. As he made his way to the Professor he noticed it was warmer near him. Thank merlin because it was chilly. As he waited for the others, he greeted Maddox with, "Hello Professor interesting setting choice you got here. I thought I was dreaming or my mind was playing tricks on me this early in the morning.." he laughed and took a sip of his coffee. He now had a fine taste for coffee all of a sudden. Probably because of those NEWTS.
....?

Maddox stared at the next to arrive, the Hufflepuff 7th year. Thought he was dreaming? Say what now? The Charms Professor blinked at him, easing away from the railing just slightly to get a better look at him. "Tell me you didn't sleep walk all the way over here, Mister Lecium." That sounded dangerous. Wondering the grounds half conscious was never a good idea.

Pause.

He wasn't seeing what he was seeing, was he? No, couldn't be. Not when he had a rule against such things. Maddox vanished the boy's cup of what smelled like coffee immediately. "This shouldn't happen again." Everyone got a first chance. He had just blown his.

What was he staring at? She wondered as she tipped her head and tired to look over the edge of the railing to the ditch below. What was he doing?

The first to be as curious about the ditch as he was. There was hope for this lot yet. Maddox offered the Gryffindor Prefect a smile. "Good morning, Miss Greyvson. Do try not to fall over too soon."

Too soon being the operative term. They'd be heading down there soon enough.

It only made sense. "Hiya Sophie." See that? Her breath was already normal-er and everything and she'd only been standing next to the prefect for a couple of seconds. Magic.
Blink.

"What'd you do, run a marathon on the way down here? Try to outrun a Nundu?" Maddox STARED at the young Hufflepuff hardly able to ignore the way she was panting and red in the face. "If it's any consolation, Miss Kittredge....you're quite early..."

And a little more staring. Who in their right mind darted across the grounds in the early morning when they didn't need to? Merlin's beard he was tired just looking at her!

And she called him a nerd. Suuuuuuuure.
Thankfully there was the appearance of yet another student to distract him, otherwise he might have been staring for a while. This one got a smile, oh yes. You had to smile at the ones that brought apples, otherwise they wouldn't feel appreciated and the apples would stop coming. Couldn't risk that. Nope.

"Thank you, Mister Fuller-Thompson." He nicked the apple from the railing the young man had placed it on then added it to the barrel from Miss Brown, purely for the sake of keeping them all in one place....and it made the pile look higher...

He liked the pile looking higher...

Like, seriously?

Way to make the rest of them look bad, Soph.

heh. Girl still got a wide grin from Eden as she approached..."Hi, professor--" she held out the three apples.
Oh oh oh!

Another three to add to his collection. These students knew how to start the day right. Maddox grinned at the Ravenclaw, levitating the apples onto the pile in the barrel as well. "Much appreciated, Miss McGee." And he meant it; THREE apples was doing life right, always.

"I brought you an apple.'' Adi held out a usual yellow apple for Catman to take before moving off to stand next to Kace.
Another Hufflepuff that looked confused as he made his way over to the bridge from the castle. The Charms Professor was starting to wonder if this would become a trend. Were they not aware when they walked out of the Entrance Hall this morning and started over to the bridge?

Sleep walking was a dangerous thing depending on what it made you do, he would suggest the Healer if this continued. "Thank you, Mister Rehman." Least the boy was conscious enough to hand over the apple. Maybe he wasn't so far gone afterall.

Merlin help her.

"Hello, Professor! Hello everyone!" Waving to her friends, Lux placed her apple on the barrel that contained more apples.
This time he didn't even have to move to put the apple on the barrel with the others. This was clear cut thinking on the part of Miss Carrington and he couldn't say he didn't approve. "Thank you, Miss Carrington." His favourite time of day was the start of his lesson when at least some of his students would remember his love of apples.

Bless them.

His eyes were somehow pried off his barrel when he heard yet another student greeting him. Ah, another of his 7th years. "Good morning, Miss Burton." He noted the way she looked at the barrel, hoping very much that it would encourage her to take him an apple next time.

It couldn't hurt.

Maybe she didn’t have to be quite as disgruntled at the professor after all. “Good morning Professor Quigley,” she said softly, knowing he’d still hear her as she joined the group near the railing. She wasn’t half as curious as it looked like some people were about what might be below them. She’d acknowledged Lux Sansa anyhow, although she didn’t say anything to the older girl. Adi only got a brief look, before she decided to stand near the lone Slytherin who had arrived before her. House loyalty.
Was it just him or did Miss Andrews always look disgruntled about something? It was a serious question, Maddox had to wonder if it was him or if she was simply not a morning person. The latter was common place and he wanted to think that by now she could get over it. Yeah, it was early, he didn't pick his times, they were given to him. They would both have to deal.

"Good morning, Miss Andrews." He said with a nod and a small smile. She should try one of them sometimes. They took away years from your face and made people more likely to approach you. Perhaps he'd suggest it one day.

It would do her some good.

The Professor was surely bound to tell them eventually what he was staring at... Right? So giving a quick smile to Kace, he walked over to him. "Hey Kace! How's it going, mate?"
"Doing brilliantly, Mister Holden." Surprisingly it wasn't that much of a lie this time. Granted he wasn't actually doing brilliantly but he was doing better than most other times. The barrel of apples might have had something to do with that, much like the thought of the activity they would be getting to soon enough.

"Thanks for asking."

Taking a small step to the side, Zeke waited for the lesson to get underway, but seeing Brooklyn close by he sent her a small smile. Hey Transfig Teammate.
Just how many of them had plans to take their breakfast to the lesson? He DID have a rule against this, in case the cold walk over had made them forget. Lucky for the little Gryffindor he'd been through with his snack before approaching the class. Honestly. Did no one read?

Just as quickly as thoughts of literacy came to his mind, they vanished in the wake of the shiny green apple being offered to him. Maddox nicked the apple with a grin. "I'll take your word for it and hope it doesn't disappoint."

Aaand into the pile this one went too. Such a lovely pile. He might need a moment if this kept up.

Fixing her bag on her shoulder she removed a bright green apple which she knew to be of the Professor's liking. "Morning Professor," she greeted happily extending her hand out with the apple to him.

That aside Hady moved out of the way to stand near some of her year mates until the lesson began.
And another green apple! Two in a row. This lesson was shaping up to be even better than he expected and it hadn't even started yet! It was nice to see most of them catching on to the fact he had a preference for the green kind. Made munching on them all the more enjoyable.

"Thank you, Miss Lynch." The grin from just earlier had gone nowhere, in fact it might have been a little wider now. He had a feeling this would be a good lesson indeed.

"Morning professor," she said in attempt to sound completely normal.

Lots of people were there and AJ didn't have the energy to actually do much more speaking. Instead she walked over and stood by the boyfriend. He got a shoulder nudge as a way of saying hello.
Yet another who'd thought to munch on the way over. Once again, lucky to be done before joining the class, otherwise it would have spelled trouble for the Gryffindor. Seeing her with an apple, Maddox couldn't help but anticipate the moment she would extend his to him but the longer he waited was the more he realized it wouldn't be happening....

Well then.

"Good morning, Miss Valentine." Consider him disappointed.

Yes. Going to stand by him.
Maddox watched the Gryffindor as he approached, wondering if he was ready to take everything he'd said and put it into practice. The boy had the raw potential, he was simply holding himself back.

"Off to a good start, I see." He commented as he collected the apple from the boy, giving him a pleased nod in the process. Much better than when he'd gone and DROPPED them. This was progress if nothing else. Only thing that could ruin it now was...well him being himself during the lesson. It was hardly impressive.

Something they needed to work on.

"Good morning, Mister Atreyu." He greeted, realizing a second later that the boy had indeed brought him an apple. He was one of the faithful ones he knew to always be present, apple in hand ready to learn. It was students like Benjamin that gave Maddox a little bit of faith in the student population. He was a good egg.

"Thank you." As with the others, this one also went to the barrel. There was no mistaking the fact he would leave here happy when the lesson was over...unless one of them ruined it.

Definitely a trend.

Someone was slipping things into the cups at the Hufflepuff table. They were showing up more and more confused by the second. This was what happened when you taught children to brew potions then left the lab open for them to experiment. Loopy children that were confused.

"Do keep in mind that this is a Charms lesson, Mister Nicolei. We don't go dragon spotting, we don't do creatures." Except for the joint with Transfiguration that once but they weren't real dragons and were hardly something he needed to get into.

"Hello, professor." What was he staring at?
Huh, it would seem the walk over did very little to wake this one up. Shame that but it wasn't the only bit of exercise for the morning. Something would have to give at some point.

"Good morning, Miss Xanthopoulos."

Oh look, the boy that couldn't make up his mind. "No intention of doing such a thing, Mister Barrington." As much as he preferred Formy, "Falling won't be the way we get down there." Nah, there was easier and far less painful ways of going about that.

Ooo! Another that had thought to bring more than one. He could very much get used to this sort of thing. Whatever inspired the generosity among the students, he wouldn't question it, the man would simply collect the apples with a smile. "Thank you, MIss McAllister."

"Good morning, Miss Guidry." He'd been watching the Second Year skipping over the way she was--quite happy to know she wasn't one of the students zombie-ing their way over but much more awake. Only thing he didn't get was the way she suddenly stopped though he did suppose it was a good idea once you got closer to others...otherwise it could get messy.

There you go, she thought, holding it out to him.

"Good morning."
By now his eyes had lifted from the ditch below, taking in the students that were appearing one behind the other. Some, naturally, were more awake than others but he didn't suspect this would be the case for long when the lesson got underway. For now, he would let them have it--but only because there were no desks to have them running an obstacle course through. Guess you could say they got lucky.

"Thank you, Miss Wilde." He said, returning the smile she'd offered a little earlier while he accepted the miniature apple. This was...new. He couldn't say many students had opted to get him one of these before.

Good on her.

Stuffing the rest of his toast in his mouth, Grayson munched as quickly as possible, swallowed, and said, "Heeeeeey, Professor." 'Sup nods for you.

No really, what had them opting to take food to class? Did they not think he would care it was rule breaking? Because he would. Only consolation was the boy had quickly finished it as he approached. It saved him, as it had done most of his other classmates that had also thought food was a good idea. Children these days.

"Look alive, Mister Whitlock." The sleepiness and grumbling would get him nowhere. They were going to be all over today, he just had no idea yet.

And now seemed like as good a time as any to get the lesson underway.

Maddox straightened where he stood and gestured for the students to gather around--mostly for those that found themselves at the far back. Plenty of room on this side of the bridge, just saying. Now then, he reached to the top and pulled an apple but refrained from munching it just yet.

All the sleepy faces were getting looks. Not tremendously grave looks, as he couldn't be bothered with those but you had the idea. Seriously lucky he didn't have any desks to send them all crawling and jumping again. Maybe next time. Merlin knew there would be a next time. "Like always, we'll begin with a somewhat vague question just to get your brains thinking." Very important before he started teaching them any spells, not to mention it usually being a good way to introduce the topic.

"Nothing difficult, I just want to know how you lot usually react when gifted something you find horrendous." Did they palm it off to someone else? Lie to save the person's feelings? Trash the damn thing the moment the person wasn't looking? "And what's usually your reason for finding a gift horrendous to begin with."

At least one of them would have the answer that would propel them into the lesson. That was usually the case.

OOC: You guys have maybe 18 hours before I move the class again ^^

Dot didn't care WHAT Kyroh and Dima thought about Quigley - she liked him. She thought he was interesting, she liked his classes, and... she was pretty sure she was going to convince him to help her learn to be an animagus. The boys were delicate wildflowers, that's all.

So she bopped merrily across the bridge toward class, spinning a little over the spots where the planking was too uneven for her happy shuffling, and when she spotted the class gathering, Dot hurried to join them.

"Good morning, Professor. I like your weather patterns. Very impressive charm-work. Also, I'm still waiting for that talk about being a cat."

A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.

Natalia, as usual, had been yawning repeatedly as she strolled toward the lesson location. As she had approached the outside scenery, however, her spirit had begun to surge along with the rising temperate. Outdoor activities were always, always the best.

The fourth year silently groaned to herself when the cat professor raised a couple of questions. WHY did they ALWAYS have to start a class with a question? WHY couldn't they just cut to the FUN part - activities. Besides, most of these discussion went nowhere, as Nat could never recall any details of their discussions, and she also wasn't the noting-taking type of student, unless it was an EXTREMELY interesting subject (a.k.a. astronomy).

"How horrendous is horrendous?" While they were at it, Natalia might as well contribute some of her thoughts. "I mean, people think that being a parseltongue is horrendous but I think it's awesome!" Wait, unless Professor Cat meant gift as in a physical gift? A wrapped present in Christmas-colored ribbons? "Oh, and if you know the gift is bad, just simply refuse it." How hard was it saying 'no'? She was fairly certain that her response did not offer anything helpful or answer the specific question the professor was looking for. Oh well.

Kace heard Professor Maddox's question and he furrowed his brows and wondered if that was an insult. No he didn't really sleepwalk. Trust me Professor if he was sleepwalking, he would have not even been dressed in his school robes. "Erm no Professor I didn't sleepwalk. I managed to get dressed and my hair is combed through. Just trying to get through the morning.." he told him truthfully. He didn't really get a good night's sleep like he hoped. As he was gonna drink from his coffee cup he saw it vanish. He blinked and then realized the Professor had his wand. Aww man he couldn't finish his drink!? He only had at least one sip left!? He sighed and decided to let it go.

He heard his question and he thought about it. How did he react when he was given a horrendous gift. Well his mother usually slapped him if he wasn't polite if it was given to a family member. His first instinct would be yeahhh I don't really like it. Like wow this gift isn't what I was expecting. So he decided to voice out his thoughts, "Well Professor I think I would still be polite and accept the gift. If they gave me a gift receipt which they have in the muggle world I would return it and no harm done. If it was here. I would still thank them and keep it." he shrugged. He would keep it and hide it and then eventually throw it away if it was that horrendous.

His second question kind of confused him so he didn't really answer out loud. I guess it was just someone's style and tastes is what made it horrendous or possibly their lack of motivation or hard work. There was a lot of factors. "I guess one reason if it isn't something you are into or care for. That would be one reason to turn down the gift." There plain and simple. Now if he would have his coffee back that would nice.

Sophie giggled a little - not because it was funny, but it was more a nervous, embarrassed sort of giggling - when he reprimanded her for the nickname, and with pink-tinted cheeks she replied, "Sorry, sir. Just sorta came out. Overabundance of excitement 'n all. Won't happen again." Probably. But ALL SEEMED TO BE OKAY and he was GRINNING SUPER BIG when he saw the barrel, and her arms crossed even more smugly across her chest as he THOUGHT SHE'D FORGOTTEN. HEH.

SHE. DID. GOOD.

KID.

"Told you y'could count on me. I've got your back."

Norah and Tobes both received smiles and greetings from the prefect as they gathered around, as did various others - ESPECIALLY the ones who were very clearly judging her for bringing a whole barrel of apples. IT'S AN INSIDE JOKE, she tried to tell them with her eyes, but mostly, she probably just came across as even more delighted and pleased with her work. As a leader, she had to set the standards, okay? Lead by example. Or... something like that.

Hehehehehehe.

When class got started, Sophie's eyebrows furrowed - why did he WANT to ask a vague question? The question itself was a weird one, and... she tried hard to think of a present anyone had given her that she didn't love. She felt pretty fortunate to have people in her life who always gave her fun, creative, meaningful gifts. Was there even anything she'd been given that she didn't like? She... wasn't sure, so then the question was what WOULD she do if given a gift she didn't like?

"I'd learn to like it," she offered with a shrug and a raised hand. "If it was someone I loved and they gave me something they genuinely thought I'd like, something from the kindness of their heart, and there was meaning behind the gift, then... it'd be special to me just for that reason." Just that they thought to get her something at all. "Maybe it'd be initially horrendous - like, if it was something that wasn't my style or something I'd ever use or wear - but I'd change my thoughts about it to be more grateful and positive." That didn't necessarily she would wear or use the gift in question, but at least she would appreciate it for what it was and acknowledge that it was gifted to her with good intentions, right?

He slept late again last night trying to catch up with homework and stuff. Urgh...the life of a student was so hard sometimes.
He approched the professor and greeted him with a sleepy smile,"Morning Professor...brilliant scenery, are we spotting dragons today."He had no idea why he was saying that...yup he hadn't woken up fully, alright. He yawned again before leaning back on one of the wooden pillars.

The fact that they got to be outside instead of in the classroom this morning was more than enough to have Ilia bright eyed and ready this morning. She had even remembered to pack a few apples for the professor. Much to her surprise though, one of the older Ravenclaw girls had brought him............a bushel!? How did one student acquire that many apples in one sitting and how would one man eat so many before they weren't so tasty? She saw other students still give him apples, but she wondered if her apples would matter much now that he had an overflowing bushel........She tucked them back in her satchel as she poked her best friend in the side gently. He didn't seem nearly as awake this morning and she had learned that their charms cat professor seemed to require them to be on their toes.

The professor posed a particularly odd query in Ilia's opinion. He must have had a reason for it, whether it made sense yet or not. She thought about it for a moment. What did she do with a gift she found horrible? And what made her consider the gift horrible to start with..........One answer dawned on her.....That frilly pink princess gown her mother had given her when they moved to London. She took it.......but chucked it into a box and hid it at the bottom of her closet so that she didn't have to look at its garish color. What made her find it horrendous? It was completely against her character and everything that she liked and was truly for her mother's joy...not her own.

"A gift is a gift, so I accept it, but.....if it is really horrendous I hide it." Yup, that is what she did. Hide things she didn't want to deal with....She looked down at the ditch.........that would be a great place to stuff that poofy ball of fabric called clothing........."I find a gift is horrible if it is something that the giver gives for themselves, instead of the person they are giving it to. Like if someone knows that you don't like a certain color, but gives you a shirt that color because they like it and want to see it." Like matching pink shirts for them and you.............*shudder*

Zhenya gave QutieQuigley a smile as he replied to her greeting. And soon after, it was time to start. Zhenya stood somewhere near the front of the crowd, being short herself. She wanted to see, and be seen. Obviously. She was surprised they wouldn't be doing any exercises to wake them up, she had been looking forward to that, but at least she didn't feel as tired as some of her classmates looked. She had started to stop studying at 10pm and going to bed to read for half an hour to help her mind switch off. It was helping with the early get ups.

But now, the first question. Zhenya listened as they started to talk about gifts. She tried to think of a time when she had been gifted something she hadn't liked, but she couldn't. Not that she received many gifts, but the ones she did receive she loved. Still, that wasn't an answer he was looking for. So, being charms class, Zhenya tried to think - "how you lot usually react when gifted something you find horrendous" he had asked.

She raised her hand, "I would be polite and thank them, unless it was a mean prank by them, if they gave me a horrendous gift that was offensive, then I'd tell them off." Maybe even give them a little light hexing for being mean.

Eden beamed because Professor Quiggles seemed happy with her three apples..even though Sophie had brought him a BARREL. Well then. Eden was satisfied, though.

She looked over at the bridge and wrapped her arms around herself, shivering only slightly. The fog was making her FEEL colder than she really was. Funny, what visuals could do to your thinking and sense perception.

At his question, Eden wondered what she would even find as a horrendous gift. Hmm. A really ugly sweater? Licorice? Dolls? And how would she react? She cleared her throat and raised her hand. "Sir--I think I'd just be polite and accept the gift...probably shut it away for awhile, or try to use the gift and make it into something I'd like--but yeah." Recycling a gift, but not in the way people think about recycling a gift--Eden LITERALLY meant just....turning the gift into something useful.

For example, an ugly sweater could totally serve as a warm cover up for her snake cages. Yep.

This first question had Toby very confused. He stared at the professor for a while after it was asked, blinking. Then he looked around at the others who were answering, still blinking. Then back to Quigley again.

Uhh...

With his brow slightly furrowed in confusion (or perhaps concentration, such was the effort it was to focus on the positive and ignore or take the negative words he was hearing and turn them around in his head), Toby raised his hand.

"I don't find anything horrendous," he said. He didn't DO that stuff. Never negative, nope, not at all. Never. Not no way not no how.

So he couldn't answer the question properly, see? Which was why he was stumped.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

"You're welcome, Professor,'' Adi said. And waiting, waiting for the class to staaaart! Hey! It was AJ! She looked like she needed something to wake her up. Well, he KNEW that she would look out of it even before he saw her because the early mornings were not her thing. Too bad he couldn't pass some of his energy to her. "Hi, you!'' He bumped her shoulder back, with a little more force. Maybe it would jolt her awake a little? Looky! Another lion! "Hi, Benny!'' A big grin for you, Dragon! But none for Angel as Adi pointedly ignored her.
...................

Heh. What a question. Adi didn't even have to think twice about his answer would be though he did pause to listen to answers from his classmates. Yep, Nats's answer was expected and so were Ilia's, Toby's, Kace's and Zhenya's. Okay! Time for his input. Adi raised his hand.

"I would accept it, Professor. The person might have put a lot of thought into it and didn't think it would seem horrendous. So, I'd take it not to hurt their feelings.'' Pauseeee. "I don't think I would find anything horrendous. I know I would laugh it off and go with the idea that it's just a joke the persons playing on me.'' Because he had such a great sense of humour!

"Sorry professor..."Henric muttered.Hmm...Professor Quigley seemed to be on edge today. No pun intended, considering they were standing high up on the bridge. He knew of course this wasn't care of magical creature class, but wouldn't it be cool to spot one flying dragon around Hogwarts. He would certainly be feeling alive and awake if there was.His thoughts were interrupted when llia came to poke him on the side again.
"Blimey llia...no more poking, a simple tap on the shoulder will suffice,"Henric chuckled jokingly back at her.

Henric tapped on the sides of his face, trying his best to be attentive during the class discussion. Horrendous gifts? He racked his brain for any horrendous gift he had received before. Nope...he didn't remember having any. They were all nice and lovely actually. He would accept them if it was...it was the thought that counts right?

"Firstly I will thanked them for their thoughtful gift, I don't want to hurt their feelings, it will be impolite if I do...and who knows their gifts might come useful to you later, you can pass it over to someone who will probably needs it more..."he answered. Charity was good too...you know.

She knew he’d hear her. Brooklyn was nothing if not observant of how the professors worked, and the one thing she’d noticed was that Professor Quigley and loud noises (or people) didn’t get along. Maybe it was a cat thing. She knew Tywin didn’t really like loud noises either. In any case, she’d returned his smile with a small one of her own. He deserved that much, anyway. Anyone who hadn’t done anything really to make her entirely upset did. Well, aside from certain people. They didn’t need to know that. The important part was retaining the professor’s respect, since it worked in her favor. Everyone else had to work for that.

As she’d turned back to the railing, she saw Zeke’s wave, though, and returned it with a questioning look, although the small smile she’d given the professor hadn’t yet faded from her face. She wasn’t Hady. She’d noticed her housemate’s arrival not long after said wave, too. It was all curious.

Oh. Thinking. She could do that. She did that a lot, even though she rarely volunteered her thoughts. The question that had been posed was interesting, anyway. A horrendous gift… there were lots of different definitions of that, but she was going to go with something that was horrendous to her. “I’d take it, but probably get rid of it once whoever gave it to me wasn’t around anymore,” she said, raising her hand even though she still hadn’t raised her voice much higher than it had been when she’d greeted him. “I’d think it was horrendous if it was something I really didn’t want.” Or it was stupid, or totally not anything she ever would have liked.

Ah. Good old vague questions.

Clara learnt against the railing of the bridge, listening to a few other people's answers first .... she was sure that some of them had to be lying when they said they different find any gifts horrendous. Had they never known disappointment in their lives?

Personally, Clara didn't receive so many gifts that she thought she had the right to complain and, no, this is not a sob story, she was just grateful when she did get gifts ...... but, of course, she had gotten gifts that she didn't particularly like. She discretely stifled a yawn before speaking. "I'm generally grateful for whatever I receive, but I have been known to transfigure my gifts .... not that I'd go as far as to label them horrendous in the first place." So, all in all, a similar answer to Eden's.

Great minds think alike.

The apple wouldn't disappoint, he was SURE of it. Positive. They were great apples... even if he didn't have an orchard of them like Sophie did. The Aparecium was right about her, huh? Funny that.

He was used to these THINK ABOUT questions, and in fact he rather liked them because there was little chance of him getting it wrong.

Hand raised, Zeke told of how HE handled terrible gifts. "I smile and nod, and then once the person's gone I get rid of it. Break it, throw it away, give it to someone else... because one man's junk is another man's treasure, right? No point holding onto something I can't appreciate when someone else might." Of course, breaking things was equally enjoyable, AND it was an excuse to ditch it. WHOOPS, IT BROKE! "Clothes. I hate getting clothes, those aren't gifts, those are necessities, I should be able to choose my own necessities." i.e. no itchy ties or suits or lame loafers or anything of a sort.

Angel looked at the Professor as he spoke and then she realised that Adi was totally ignoring her and she had no idea why but she couldn't get involved in that at the minute since it was lesson time so she decided she would ask him later.

Angel raised her hand. "Professor, I think that you should take the present and then thank them for it. " Angel smiled. "They didn't have to give you a gift so it means that they care and thought about you." Angel would never turn down a gift.

Hady kept her small smile in place as the lesson began. Stepping closer onto the bridge near were Professor Quigley was stood. It gave a much better view of things anyhow.

At the question that was posed Hady raised her hand. "I'd gratefully accept the gift and thank them because really it's the thought that counts when gift giving and not so much what the gift. However if it was something I truly didn't want, like or need I'd kindly try to explain that it's not really my style or something like that...they may just understand and not mind if I exchanged the gift for something I'd enjoy." Mhmm. Sometimes honesty was great and well others times it was best to keep your mouth shut.

He totally noticed the apple. She could just tell by the look he gave her. It was the sort of thing that spoke volume. Sorry, man. Next time she would bring him an apple for real. Better keep two in her bag at all times just in case she ate one on accident. Because accidental apple eating was a thing.

Benny joined her and Adi and he got a slight nod because mornings! When Adi bumped into her and spoke all she could do was grunt. Waking up was happening, but it was a slow process. Before long sentences would be able to form.

A question already? Her brain was still in sleep mode. The walk over here didn't really do anything for her. It was sort of an out of body experience. AJ waited while other people answered so she could give her body just a little more time.

"Depends," she managed to croak out. More than that... Come on. "I doubt I would find something horrendous." Did they know her at all? She wasn't trying to be noble it was just that she saw things in a different light. "The only thing I might find horrendous would be if someone gave me a tiny slice of chocolate. Like, what am I supposed to do with that? I'd easily remedy that with a duplication spell." Or a stomp on the toes, but that surely wasn't the correct answer.

"Or I'd trash it. No need in wasting energy." Yawn. Look what all the talking got her.

Brian squinted at the cat-man, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. He realised a little belatedly that the man's apple was still in his hand, so he ran over and deposited it on top of the stack and ran back to his very comfortable spot on the floor. Oh, don't mind him. It was just that 9 am was too close to the crack of dawn these days, and it was cold. It was human instinct to want to sleep and conserve body heat. Oh why weren't they allowed to sleep in everyday?

Horrible gifts, though? "It depends on the gift. If it's clothes, I tend to just shove it to the back of my closet and ignore it... or give it to charity." His ma was expert on the whole charity thing. She was having a field day raiding his closet at home with the alarming rate that he was growing out of his clothes. "Otherwise, I don't find anything particularly horrible. Just impractical."

Mmhmm. Maybe they could learn a warming charm? It would be magnificently appreciated, especially in the December chill. It would also serve as a good birthday-slash-Christmas present. BRR.

Zander smiled a little, despite the fact that his single measly apple was hardly worth noting next to the entire bushel. But Quigley said he was off to a good start, so that it self was worth noting right? He was on his absolute best behavior today. Well, not really behavior wise because he wasn't ever on his worst behavior... He was just going to give it his absolute hardest attempt with the charm today. Whatever it might be, Zander was gonna perfect it. Or he'd fail miserably in the process of trying.

But anyways. There was plenty of time to think about failing. But right now wasn't one of those times because they were being asked a mysteriously vague and relatively easy question which would surely turn into a 'this is what we're doing today' type of thing. Professors were easy to figure out. Also that what Professor Q just said they were doing. So ahem. Vague question time.

"I suppose if it's a mean gift," he'd find it horrendous then. Like when his brothers would leave him little gifts on his pillow in the form of giant spiders and earth worms. Though, did those even count as a gift? "'Cause if it's meant to be a nice gift, then I'd have to pretend I like it... Then probably shove it at the bottom of my trunk never to be seen again or I'd find a way to trade it for chocolate frogs." Pretending was the first route of action though. Like whenever his aunts thought socks were the perfect Christmas presents. Socks were even worse than coal, wasn't that a known fact?

"But if it's a mean gift... Then you've got to fight it," like with revenge or something. Not that, that's anything Zander would recommend... But that one Zonko's visit really helped with the whole stupid brothers situation. Just saying.

Lux smiled at Professor Quigley as he thanked her for the apple. He must be in heaven; sooooo many apples for him.

Maybe if he was happy, he wouldn't make them do something crazy and dangerous this lesson. If heights were involved AGAIN, she would have a breakdown. As it was, she stared at everything around her besides the landscape so that she could forget where she was. Ooooh, that barrel was a nice focal point. Only thing was it made her hungry - Quigley didn't seem like the sharing type.

The lesson began with a vague question, and Lux wondered if maybe they were going to learn something relating to presents? That would be a MUCH better alternative to bungee jumping off the bridge or whatever else the professor might have planned for them. Raising her hand, she answered the question. "I don't think I would ever find a present HORRENDOUS, but I'd still be polite about it and thank the person." It would be plain rude to be ungrateful for a present that a person put time and effort into. "I'd also give it to someone who I know would enjoy it."

Cutty appreciated the warmth that Professor Quigley had put into that morning's Charms class. It made the walk to it that much more pleasant. A nice sensation based contrasts from the crisp morning air on the bridge to the almost tepidness of the class.

Things were getting started! But before they were in full-swing Cutty was treated one more time to the sight of Sophie Brown levitating a whole barrel full of green apples to Professor Quigley and there was Eden McGee looking unpleased for it. HA! He knew Eden McGee intimately enough to know what that look translated to. Quiggles? She pushed her luck, though. She pushed her luck.

"Generally, if I find a gift horrendous...", He began with his hand up. "It's because it carries no intrinsic value, booht, I consider myself a resourceful man. There isn't alorra things out there that can't be repurposed or altered a bit in some way until it gains some value." His eye casually shifted toward Eden. "Even a dented strumpet....trumpet." He said correcting himself cooly and refocusing on the Professor. "Could be useful as a portkey."

Janelle was full of energy, but she didn't exactly miss climbing over and under desks. When the Professor was ready to start class, she moved closer to the larger group of students. Then it was time for the opening question and an interesting one it was. This one required some thought.

Janelle raised her hand and began to give her answer. "When I get a really bad present, I thank the person anyway.......because they took the time to get something for me. I appreciate the thought and I try to find some way to make use of it. I mean the person can't help it if they're "present challenged". I think a horrendous present would be something that I would never want in a million years or something very......um.......un-pretty."

Interesting little snake this one was, persistent too. Maddox allowed himself a little smile as he regarded the Fourth Year. Still waiting on the talk? Well..."I'm still waiting for you to show up at my office." Much easier there than the middle of a lesson when he had to be focusing on any number of students in a given space of time.

Just saying.

She was fairly certain that her response did not offer anything helpful or answer the specific question the professor was looking for. Oh well.

Very straight-forward this one was, he could appreciate that, especially when compared to what he could only take to be a string of lies coming from the others. Simply refusing, it was the easiest way to go about such a thing really...unless you genuinely cared for the person offering the gift...then it wasn't as easy. "Very practical, thank you."

Okay so...he hadn't been sleep walking but somehow he felt like he'd been dreaming by the time he walked over here from the castle. The man wasn't sure he was willing to question that logic, afterall, Hufflepuffs were not the most logical of the lot. Maddox simply nodded and listened for the response he would offer.

A more polite approach, but just as honest. He would return the gift if he had a chance to. It was another route to be taken if one could be bothered with that sort of thing. "Caring for or being interested in something would make the gift a little easier to accept, yes."

SPOILER!!: Sophie

His grin spread a little wider at her apology. He wouldn't be going rawr any time soon because of the tremendous effort required and the lack of ill tempered build up so there was really no need to sweat it. Just as long as they'd finally come to an understanding on the matter and could move on, which seemed to be the case right now.

Her response to the question was nothing short of what he would expect from one Sophie Brown. He gave a small shake of his head, hardly surprised.

"Learning to love the gift is a lovely idea," Mother Teresa, "inspired even." She'd almost been onto something with style but then she'd glossed right over it and missed the answer he'd been looking for. So close.

See, he KNEW at least of one them would go into it without really even meaning to and it got the Charms Professor grinning once more, though somewhat subdued. No need to spoil it just yet while others were still making their responses.

"Colour does pose a problem for some when accepting gifts. Luckily, there's a quick fix for that." Which they would get into real soon...relatively soon anyway.

Another that would opt for the polite route. It didn't surprise him it was Miss Burton to offer this response. The 7th year was one of the more docile among his student population and he could appreciate that...until she mentioned telling them off and now he was suddenly filled with the amusing image of her trying to be particularly stern and overly annoyed at anyone. "Thank you Miss Burton." Consider him amused.

Recycling a gift, but not in the way people think about recycling a gift--Eden LITERALLY meant just....turning the gift into something useful.

For example, an ugly sweater could totally serve as a warm cover up for her snake cages. Yep.

"An innovative idea, Miss McGee." Turning the gift into something she could find better use for. It would make a good Transfiguration Lesson, not that he'd be the one to go suggesting anything to Bellaire. No. The man would be staying very much away from the bitter old woman and all her malicious little ways. Being a toad did not suit him one bit.

Maddox was beginning to think he'd been thrown into a class of saints. Polite little things that insisted every gift was a good gift. Toby was the latest addition to this and he didn't know whether to be proud because it was morally correct or overly concerned like he actually was.

"That's...admirable of you, Mister Fuller-Thompson." And odd. Very very odd. How was he going into the big world with that attitude? SOMEONE HAD TO WARN HIM.

See what he was talking about? The Saint-hood lived on. All this talk about the thought being put in and accepting and the politeness of it all. Only two options here, only two. Was it a coincidence that the Puffers didn't find gifts horrendous?

"I do suppose that could work too...yes." Seriously concerned for the welfare of his young students.

"Firstly I will thanked them for their thoughtful gift, I don't want to hurt their feelings, it will be impolite if I do...and who knows their gifts might come useful to you later, you can pass it over to someone who will probably needs it more..."he answered. Charity was good too...you know.

That was exactly what he was talking about and yet again it was another Puffer to continue the trend. Not wanting to hurt feelings. Snort. Honestly how did they expect him to drop his working stereotypes when they were proving them so clearly? It was almost impossible.

"A very good point, Mister Nicolei, you never know when something unwanted might become useful. Best to hang on to it." No matter how much you didn't want to.

Ah, the honesty of a snake, even if it would have been far more honest to toss it before their faces. Still, some etiquette needed to be observed otherwise one might find themselves coming into contact with people far less and less.

"Getting something you didn't want at all does tend to make it somewhat horrendous. All the built up anticipating for nothing in the end." Like earlier when he'd expected that apple from Miss Valentine.

"I'm generally grateful for whatever I receive, but I have been known to transfigure my gifts .... not that I'd go as far as to label them horrendous in the first place." So, all in all, a similar answer to Eden's.

Great minds think alike.

One more that could see the better good in a gift by changing it. "Very good, Miss Wilde. Might as well have something you'll actually want to utilize." Otherwise it was the same as trashing the gift or stuffing it to the far back of your trunk with the hopes it would never resurface.

Funny how things like that never worked.

Of course, breaking things was equally enjoyable, AND it was an excuse to ditch it. WHOOPS, IT BROKE! "Clothes. I hate getting clothes, those aren't gifts, those are necessities, I should be able to choose my own necessities." i.e. no itchy ties or suits or lame loafers or anything of a sort.

....

.........

Not only would it be tossed but it could be broken first or instead. That...that definitely sounded like a Gryffindor response right there. Wouldn't even call it violence, just a random act of Gryffindoring. He was all too familiar with those.

"No little brothers you could re-gift your clothes to?" That was usually a safe solution if they were close enough in either age or stature. Just a thought.

"You raise a good point, Miss Valentine." If not yet another self-righteous one. "No one is obligated to gift things to you in the first place. Some appreciation would be nice."

There he went, back to worrying about his students again or perhaps the problem was on his end....

However if it was something I truly didn't want, like or need I'd kindly try to explain that it's not really my style or something like that...they may just understand and not mind if I exchanged the gift for something I'd enjoy." Mhmm. Sometimes honesty was great and well others times it was best to keep your mouth shut.

There Miss Lynch went, adding a new twist to the 'accept it anyway because it's the thought that counts'. Where are most would toss it afterward, she would ensure they understood that it simply wasn't her style and she didn't want to be bothered with keeping it.

"I admire the bit of honesty near the end, every good." Might as well let them know otherwise you might find yourself getting more gifts along that same line and that would get problematic.

"Or I'd trash it. No need in wasting energy." Yawn. Look what all the talking got her.

Maddox was decidedly amused by the answer offered by Aubrey. A small slice of cake is the gift idea that would get her upset? You had to admit it was funny. "You could also enlarge it. Make it massive." Without making it so big it exploded of course, but after his class on that charm, it went without saying.

"Otherwise, I don't find anything particularly horrible. Just impractical."

Mmhmm. Maybe they could learn a warming charm? It would be magnificently appreciated, especially in the December chill. It would also serve as a good birthday-slash-Christmas present. BRR.

Huh. Well that was one way to go about it. Maddox nodded slowly at the Hufflepuff's response. "Do you have charms placed on your closet? Otherwise I imagine it would become overcrowded at some point." In the end, charity seemed the better of the two options.

This having faith in Zander thing was new and would take some getting used to. In fact, Maddox had to actively remind himself that the boy's answer was a decent one, allowing him to keep the scowl off his face. So far, so good. Nothing to have him giving the boy death glares just yet and this was how it would be for however long it lasted.

Like several of his classmates he would trade or stash the gift with the hopes of never seeing it again. Though the option to 'fight it' got a raise of his brow, he nodded nonetheless.

"Very good, Mister Adair." Positive reinforcements right there.

The nod continued as he listened to Miss Carrington offer up her suggestion on the matter. Once again it was the polite acceptance route that ended with the gift being re-gifted. No surprise she wouldn't find anything particularly horrendous. "Very good."

"Spoken like a true business man, Mister Mordaunt. Keep that up and you'll go far." He would, of course, be ignoring that comment about a strumpet in favour of telling himself it was an innocent slip of the tongue. Nothing more. Nothing he planned to look too deeply into.

SPOILER!!: Janelle
Janelle was full of energy, but she didn't exactly miss climbing over and under desks. When the Professor was ready to start class, she moved closer to the larger group of students. Then it was time for the opening question and an interesting one it was. This one required some thought.

Present challenged?

Well that was a new one. He'd have to remember that the next time his mother-in-law tried gifting him something. He'd let her down gently but it needed to be said. Maddox cracked a smile at the thought. "Thank you, Miss Guidry."

After carefully considering all the responses, he was willing to draw the conclusion that half his class were either avid liars or too saintly for their own good at this age. Clearly the cynicism of the real world hadn't begun to sink in and maybe that was a good thing. Just maybe he should have left it where it was so their parents could continue thinking they'd raised a bunch of wonderful children. That sounded like the best option.

"And now we narrow this down just a little more, based on what Miss Valke briefly touched on." Crunch. Mmmm, this was heavenly. Who'd brought this one again? Nice and crunchy it was. "Imagine being gifted something with a colour so hideous even the most saintly of you can't help but take a pause." You know, before they selflessly accepted it for the 'greater good' of the other individual's feelings.

"This is one of the easiest problems to be fixed with gifting, and that is done with the colour changing charm, 'Colovaria'; with the simple point for a wand movment." A flick of his wand and this information appeared on the board while he went on.

All of you. We're gonna do this real simple. Practice the charm on the ties, making it every other house's colour before returning it to normal. Let's go."

Crunch.

OOC: It's really simple. Let's say your charrie is a Gryffindor, they would need to make the tie every other house's colour so they would turn the tie: blue, green and yellow. Similarly a Hufflepuff would turn their tie: red, blue and green etc etc etc. You will only need 3 posts for this before I move the class again. If something is unclear please feel free to poke me. You have about 24-36 hours depending on how soon you all get it done. ^^

A MARATHON? That'd be much more exciting than what'd really happened but Norah couldn't just lie to a Professor. Even if she was physically capable of lying (which she wasn't), even she knew that would be a horrid idea. "It's much warmer than I thought in here," she said, grinning sheepishly. "But I'm gonna run a marathon one day!" That was the PLAN, anyways.

The fourth year immediately shot a hand into the air, because guess WHAT? She knew all about this one, uh huh. She waved her hand around until she was called on, then took a deep breath. "Well I always thank the person anyways 'cause that's the nice thing to do and also my mum says if I don't say thank you then nobody will want to get me presents anymore and I like presents a whole lot so 'thank you' is usually the way to go." She looked around and nodded proudly because look at that! She remembered something her mum taught her about politeness and everything. "'Cept the only problem is it isn't very nice to lie either, even teeny weeny its bitsy fibs, so after saying thank you I have to find something little that I like about 'cause I can't say I like the entire thing or else I'd be lying, y'know?" This was an ART. But usually she'd like the color of whatever it was because she liked all sorts of colors so it really wasn't that hard. She could teach lessons, if anybody wanted.

Eden tried her best to ignore Cutty as of late. However....as he spoke....Eden glanced his way, and unfortunately, saw the way he was looking right at her. Dented..."trumpet," was she? She bit her lip and tried to keep her face as blank as remotely possible.

She stepped closer to Clara, and looked at her feet. Right. Her cheeks were flushed with a mixture of anger and....something else. She had half a mind to walk back to the castle. Could she feign sickness? She wanted to. Cutty Mordaunt had succeeded in making Eden's day turn sour. She was sure he'd be delighted to know that, though.

Before she got all emotional, though, Quigley was moving on, and Eden just glared at Cutty for minute more before turning her gaze to the professor. She saw you, Cutty. She did. Eden would not forget this. Dented trumpet. "You can still play a dented trumpet...you can't play a trumpet with its buttons missing. " She said softly, but loud enough for Cuthbert to hear.

And that as all she'd give him, for now.

They had a spell to practice. Eden pulled her tie off and just stared at the Ravenclaw colors...the overwhelming feeling of wanting to leave was so strong...ugh. But she had to stay and practice this spell. Maybe she could turn Cutty's robes red--no. NO. She was not going to do anything. She would be a bigger woman. She would act mature and adult about this.

"Colovaria..." it was easy enough. Eden kept repeating it to herself...over and over again...trying NOT to look at Cutty. Where was Clara? She needed Clara...
