It's bright and early Monday morning and time for the first Charms lesson of the term. As you enter, you notice the room is in it's typical set up with the desks and chairs lined in three neat rows to allow easy access should the Professor need to move about--though this is highly unlikely.
The windows, as usual are wide open letting in the natural light from the outdoors. Nothing like a little fresh air and a BRIGHT classroom to keep everyone awake after what was a large breakfast.
The Professor stands to the front, leaned against his desk waiting for the students to arrive. If he looks tired, he probably is...but that's nothing new, is it? Behind him the board remains blank for now except for these instructions:

OOC: The lesson hasn't officially begun yet, feel free to RP your students' arrivals and all that fancy stuff. Do remember the rules as you post. I should move this class in another 10-12 hours *crosses fingers*
Okay, Ophelia was TIRED. All of that exercise? Way uncalled for Professor. Especially in a Hogwarts robe! But the little blonde would never tell him that, and so she just focused on catching her breath quietly. In through the nose, out through the mouth, in through the nose, out through the mouth....
They got to sit on the desks? Okay, the thirteen year old officially took back everything she was thinking about you while dying in the corner. No one ever let her sit on stuff like desks. It was always get off and sit in the chair like a normal, civilized human being. And yet, here was her chance. Her one and only chance. Oh, yeah. This was awesome. Awesome Professor was awesome.
AND ANOTHER THING, the lack of sweat on the teen right now was kind of awesome. Well, it was weird to say, but with her curly hair, she would be drenched in sweat. Now that her hair was cute and short short, Ophelia could barely feel a thing. And she could just finger brush her hair and get it done with. This short hair thing was actually pretty cool. Maybe that freak out slashing of her blonde hair at twelve in the morning wasn't a bad thing after all.
That thing? The Ravenclaw had only the slightest idea. Wasn't that a lift or something? The short girl had never been in one but her fancy-pants sister with her fancy-pants ministry job apparently did. She crossed her legs and raised her hand.
"Isn't that a lift, Professor? They usually use those to go up or down, correct? Better than stairs, though what do you do if they stop working? Are you like trapped?" A little metal cage that got trapped between two floors seemed terrifying. A tiny metal cage with strangers. Gross.Ophelia thought she would start reacting like one of those caged animals at muggle zoos.
Her mother took her to one of those zoo's once, and the youngest Clarke child stayed near the monkey's all day. Monkeys were her favorite animal, what with their exploring and such. At the end of the day, the then eight year old asked her mother if she could take a monkey home, and her mother said: Why do we need a monkey? We already have one with us now. And the child got excited and thought it meant she was coming home to a monkey. But now she realized it meant her. Which was kind of adorable and awkward all at once.

Okay, so Marsha knew it was a lift, however she wasn’t going to be the fiftieth person to say so. However, frowning she put her hand up as people seemed to mention that people who were lazy used elevators. That wasn’t the only reason to use them. Huff.
”Sir, muggles or wizards who use muggle shops and buildings, that are disabled need lifts.” The slight frown that was still present on the Welsh girls face proved that she knew this from past experience.
”My grand-father had an accident while he was playing sports and broke his back while he was half way through Hogwarts… And while he was here, it was okay because the Professors charmed his wheelchair to be able to roll up the stairs - but being a muggle born when he wasn’t at Hogwarts, he couldn’t do that. There are a lot of buildings in the muggle world that have stairs without lifts or ramps and he found it very hard getting around without someone to help him if he didn’t have his magic.”
Running a hand through her hair, the girl shook her hair as she sat next to Rusty on their desk. Gosh, she’d never even seen Uncle Derek in his wheelchair but she couldn’t imagine what it was like being in a wheelchair or needing muggle crutches to get around every day. Yeah, that was all she had to say on the matter at the moment. Hopefully that was enough.

The big puff raised his hand and said, "Professor that is an elevator but also a lift like Zeke said. Whatever you wanna call it, it is suppose to help people get to their floor. People use it if they have many stairs to climb or if they are lazy.." he shrugged. He heard Zeke's question and it would be quite cool to have an elevator at Hogwarts. He waited to hear that answer.

But wait, this isn’t Muggle Studies. So...does that mean that they are going to learn how to enchant a box to act like a lift? Or be the lift?
Hm. Interesting stuff! He's all ears, Professor Q!

He had rode the lift too many times before, he could easily guessed what it was even if it been said already. "Yep..yep..that's a lift, alright,"he muttered to noone in particular. Listening silently she only raised her hand once she saw what the photo was of. "It's an elevator Professor and normally used in buildings to take people from floor to floor, though sometimes people can have one in their homes if like a family member or something is able to use stairs." Yup she knew that was true cause she had been in a very large home once that had one because their young child was in a wheelchair.

Anyways. Yes. Class. He lifted his hand (GEDDIT?!). "That's a lift, sir," he said, like they all did, because yes. And he was most definitely not going to share his experience on a lift. Nope. "... Was he really looking for an obvious answer? Cutty had doubts.
Raising his wand hand he gave a less cut and dry option, "It's a means of getting either below or above ones present location. A transportation option where no others are possible or efficient." Everything in life was more or less a tool to be used, wasn't it afterall?
Blink.
Right, well it wasn't like they were wrong or anything. It was an elevator--or a lift as some called it and it was useful for taking you from one floor to the next so the Professor nodded slowly in turn to each of them, happy they'd even bothered to try in the first place. "Correct. The lift or elevator is a muggle contraption that takes people from one floor to the next both up and down. As Mister Rider questioned, it can be found in the Ministry where it travels in all directions."
Not that THAT was the important bit about all this but a little added information never hurt. "You're quite right Mister Toussaint, it does have all those complicated mechanics that can typically be found in muggle inventions and as Miss Lynch suggested, it comes in handy for those unable to take the stairs."
Useful, if not vastly terrifying.

Getting comfy, she crossed her legs and gave her arms a good stretch.
Looking at the poster that Professor Quigley displayed for them, Lux knew immediately what the device was. She had been to plenty of muggle buildings before. Raising her hand she said, "that's an elevator. I've been in them loads of times and they are used in buildings to take people from one floor to another. Usually they work perfectly, but sometimes they malfunction and the people are trapped inside." Fortunately that had never happened to her, because she would probably have a panic attack even though she had never been claustrophobic like Bay. Being trapped in an elevator just sounded scary.

.............................
Brilliantly awake? Adi had always been awake, Professor Feline! The only difference with the Adi that had entered the classroom moments ago and the one that had just completed the exercise was that the latter one had a mild headache. OhOhOH! They could take a seat on their DESKS? Cool! It wasn't often one got to do that so the sixth year had no problem flopping down on one.
His eyes followed Quigley's wand and he studied the poster. Hand up, Adi said, ''It's an elevator, Professor. Lots of people have been known to get stuck in one of those when it malfunctions. It carries persons from one floor to another in buildings.'' Unfortunately, he didn't have any interesting stories to volunteer involving the objects.
Then there was the set that reminded him why he took the stairs. The man might have paled slightly though it was hardly noticeable as he continued nodding.
"Also correct. One downside--as it is with any muggle technology--is the likelihood it will malfunction mid use. You never know when you'll be minding your own business, sipping you coffee when suddenly the machine has you held hostage for the rest of the afternoon. Don't ride them children. Not if you don't have to." Ahem.
Moving on.
He had imparted enough wisdom on that matter for one day.

Leah listened to her classmates' answers instead. Ah, an elevator. Or a lift. They were the same thing, yeah? Its function sounded pretty cool.
Why DIDN'T they have one at Hogwarts? It would be easier to make one elevator than making one hundred and forty-two staircases.

Maddox flicked his wand and an incantation became visible on the board.

Abby thought and thought and raised her hand and said "Well the only time you would need to shoot something into the air is if it is something that can be caught at the other end and you would never shoot anything dangerous into the air cause it could spell trouble" Abby wasn't sure if she was correct but it was worth a try

Zhenya copied the spell and wand movement onto her parchment and listened to all of the answers her classmates were giving, and jotted down more dot points about the lifts and how they were related to magic. Well it seemed like magic to her, how the muggles figured out how to do it was just incredible. The way they made up for not having magic was very interesting.
She had a quick think about when it would be okay to shoot something into the air. Did it have to be acceptable today, or was hundreds of years okay? Perhaps stick to current day. The key words she was focusing on was dangerously and at a greater speed. She couldn't think of anything that would be justified to be thrown into the air dangerously and at a greater speed. The only thing she could actually come up with… she raised her hand and waited to be called upon. "Fireworks might be okay, if they were the kind you couldn't set up before hand. If you had to light them, then send them up into the air. In which case, as long as the path is clear and you know that the fireworks will go off before they come back down, the speed might be a good thing. Get it as high into the sky as possible, so more people can see them." Yep, she knew it was silly, but it was all she had. Well, that and cannons.

Of course the spell would be related to the elevator but Adi liked the sound of the spell a whole lot more. Well, depending on how one looked at it the spell could be considered both dangerous and fun and Adi was looking on the fun side of things. It could make things go SUPEEEEEER FAST! Yeah! Super fast was was good, good, GOODY!
Pulling his book and quill on his lap, the Puffer made a note of the spell's incantation as well as other notes about how the spell worked. By now, he had very much forgotten about his headache. HE COULD NOT WAIT TO START SPELL PRACTICE! Hehe.
Adi thought about the question posed before them. His mind instantly wandered to Hippogriffs... and so his answer naturally had something to do with his favourite creatures. His hand shot into the air. "If your Hippogriffs are flying and you want to feed them, you can use that spell to shoot their food in the air. That way you'll be feeding them AND they'll have a sort of game and exercise combination with catching their food. I would do that with my future Hippogriffs anyway.'' Because Adi was fun like that! He'd make sure his Griffs would be fuuuun too.
She had had quite the experience with these things, Professor Cat Man. Norah grinned at him, proud that he'd noticed that she was practically an EXPERT on adventures in lifts. She could take him on one sometime, if he wanted. Even if he was scary it didn't mean he couldn't have fun...probably. It'd be a good science experiment, anyways.
She leaned over her desk and wrote down the new note-y stuff, trying to concentrate on making her notes look neat instead of how her back was feeling all sorts of weird from trying to write and stand at the same time. Once she'd spent a sufficient amount of time trying to pronounce the incantation in her head, she straightened up with one hand on her lower back and put the other one in the air. "Well if you used it on a person I'd bet it'd be all sorts of fun, but only if you made sure they landed on something soft." Breaking a limb would be highly unpleasant, she should know. It'd be a fun activity, though, 'cause it seemed like they wouldn't be riding in any lifts during this lesson. "But maybe you could shoot actual stuff into the air if you wanted to get it over something tall. Like a fence. Or a mountain." He hadn't really said how high the thing would go, y'know. Who said you couldn't shoot stuff all the way over a mountain?
EEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!! THIS WAS THE FIRST EVER SPELL SHE WAS GOING TO LEARN AND ROWAN WAS SO EXCITED!!!!
But WHAT would you want to make go up??
"What about rockets sir?! Toy ones, for kids to play with and then it makes them look REAL!"
How cool would THAT be?!!! Rowan didn't know much about rockets and space travel, but she'd seen a few in her books and she thought it would be totally awesome to have toy ones that actually worked.
She scribbled notes as quickly as she could, getting her hands covered in ink in the process... she still hadn't mastered the whole quill thing, even with the help she'd had from Gabriel, and she wondered if she'd be allowed to just use a biro if she couldn't pick it up quickly, because her notes were just covered in splotches and blobs of stray ink...

Yes, see? He'd known there was a lift in the ministry. Anyways.
Why would they need to know how to make things go up? ... Well, that.. was a very good question.
To shoot rockets into the sky? To scare annoying kneazles? To bother little sisters by making all their clothes shoot up into the air? He grinned at that last one as he imagined Suri's face. Then his grin was wiped off his face as he imagined his mother's reaction.
"To get the quaffle in the air if the referee can't throw during the beginning of a quidditch match?" he raised his hand, feeling decidedly uncreative as he jotted down the spell and some further notes. The beginning bit was as far as Benzi could go in Quidditch games. He just didn't find it all that interesting, much to his family's chagrin.

So..........Eden didn't mind the PROACTIVE part of the lesson that they were starting with, apparently. It was a lot of work. Eden was out of breath by the time she was done, but...you know..whatever. WHATEVER. Obstacle courses should SOOOO be a class here at Hogwarts. Or like..a club thing. Eden would JOIN and have FUN and be active and stuff. Since she...hadn't gone jogging yet while being at school...
She needed to get on that.
LIFTS! Eden knew what it was immediately and wondered why they were pertinent for the lesson--OH OH OH. MADE SENSE NOW.
She raised her hand at Professor Quiggles' question. "When you're making pancakes. This spell would be PERFECT!" It was true. And she thought her answer was literally the best answer ever. And totally practical..."Who needs a SPATULA?"

Henric thought for a moment, what would he do with the spell...hmmm. Well when he was a wee boy, he used to love cookies his mother made but she always put the cookie jar onto the most highest place possible so he couldn't reach it. Ohhh he tried using magic...yes he did...yet it never worked. Then again, shooting himself into the air just to reach for the cookie jar...wouldn't it be a disastrous outcome?
He raised his hand," Maybe this spell is good for reaching high places,"he answered. "Like she said,"pointed to the girl who had the similar answer as him,"getting over a fence or a high wall?"he added.
Michael proceeded to write down some of the things the Professor was saying. He didn't need to really because he already knew this charm, but just in case this Professor had a different way of doing things. He raised his hand to answer the question. "When you need to get rid of something in a hurry."
A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.
From the professor's description, it sounded a lot like the violent form of Wingardium Leviosa. Maybe it was.
Natalia couldn't think of any practical use of the spell on the top her head. Personally, for Nat, she would very much like to use it to propel her younger brother up in the air every time he pestered her. Yes, that kind of punishment would definitely be necessary to teach that little jerk a lesson.
"When you're angry." Natalia suggested plainly. Anything else? "When you want something out of your way. When you don't want to see something ever again." Was that good enough? Yes, Natalia was satisfied.
Alarte Ascendare... that would be a fun one to say. Toby quickly scribbled it down on his parchment, and the intent and outcome and wand movement too. A brandish, a niiice BRANDISH. Always fun.
WHY would they use it? On what? Toby had a brilliant answer/idea about that, and stuck his hand in the air.
"Yourself!" But, uh... now he had to think of a solid reason as to why. "Because... fun?" Uh, wait, no. That wasn't his final answer. He wasn't locking that in. Think, Toby, think. "... Like... if you needed to catch a bludger... and all the brooms have been stolen... and no other spells worked... and you didn't have a... net." Um. Okay, that could have been better thought through. "Or maybe you're just a daredevil, wanting to try a the ultimate parkour."
Yeah? Yeah.

Marsha grinned a little as the Professor picked out her answer and nodded to him. Although she knew that her Grandad Carwyn had really helped Grandpa Derek - there had been a lot of charms that had helped him first while Grandad had been trying to help him. However - she was proud to have given some form of right answer straight away. Go her. Hehehe.
OH!!!
Marsha’s hand shot up in the air. ”Sir? Could I use it to levitate myself higher so that I don’t need to ask everyone else to get things off the highest shelves?” The girl frowned a little bit, as if she knew that wasn’t going to be the answer that he was looking for. ”Or maybe I could even just use it to put things on the top shelf so that I don’t need to ask them to put things away for me either?”
Well, it might not be the correct answer, but it certainly seemed like a good idea to her. Hehe.

Alarte Ascendare. Hayden repeated those words over and over again in her mind. A simple point of the wand was simple, and the incantation didn't sound too hard. It literally had the word 'ascend' in it, so it should also be fairly easy to remember. As for the potential uses, several examples popped into her mind, but she wasn't sure if any of them would really be necessary, or if they would even work. She raised her hand to ask a question. "How big of an object does this work on? Could you levitate a house?"
Hayden thought again about applications for the spell. She had to think carefully before raising her hand to give her answer. "You could use it for fishing," she suggested. "If you saw a fish near the surface of the water, or if one jumped, you could levitate it up to be able to catch it. In a net or something." There were probably several spells that also could be used in that situation. Even a simple summoning spell would probably suffice.
Why would you need to shoot something into the air?.................Ilia had been nothing but silent and obedient so far, but her mind was musing. Shooting things into the air........"For self defense, potentially. Or in some cases, as it has been said, to launch yourself possibly?" That was the behaved answer........"Or for anger management some days....." She murmured mostly to herself. That was the less behaved answer but closer to her real answer. Shooting things into the air sounded like a lot of fun and fun was a stress reliever. She wrote the charm down so that she could memorize and practice it, hopefully they would get to use it today.
not bogged down by restrictions? That wasn't what Ophelia asked at all, but the blonde was going to go with it. Mostly because SHE wasn't entirely sure what she was asking. Perhaps whether her had ever been stuck in an elevator, or what it was like to be stuck in an elevator, or something of the sort. But that was a question for later when they weren't going on with the lesson. Because they were learning something now and the short girl wanted to stay the route this time instead of getting off track. So in the margin of her parchment, she wrote down the question. What was it like getting stuck in a lift? Was it like being an animal at the zoo?
Biting her lip as she slowly took the rest of the notes, the third year stopped for a few seconds when someone else asked a question. Ophelia wished she could place a name to the face, but it was someone she never really talked to before, but the small girl was thinking the same thing, and her answer kind of depended on it, so it was probably good to know the answer. Probably.
HAND RAISE.
"Actually, she (littledhampir) brings up a good point! How big can the item be? Because if there's a fallen tree trunk in your way, or some kind of debris, can you lift it up? It would be good for emergency situations, yes? Just..." And she mimicked lifting up a tree from the road and driving a car under. And then there was another question she wanted to ask that she just thought of. The third year was obviously feeling talkative today.
HAND RAISE, AGAIN!
"And do you have to be standing in a certain place to lift the object? Can you move around and have the spell still work? Say I lift up something like a fish, can I walk around and keep the fish in the air? Cause that would be cool." Hey, she asked the important -albeit kind of stupid- questions. It was just who she was. Even though the Ravenclaw wasn't really sure if she answered the first question he asked, but she tried. And that was what mattered, right?

Up. And down. Over. And under. This wasn't the first time Mitchell had done ridiculous exercises, but it was the most recent. He was by no means out of shape, he just wasn't used to this sort of thing anymore.
It was really unfair that the Professor could turn into a cat. Hmph.
Up. Down. Over. Under. Ugh, his arms were now starting to hurt and he was beginning to worry that he'd tip over one of the desks.
But soon they were done with that exercise. THANKFULLY. And they were even about to learn something cool. He grinned when the Professor asked what it would be needed for. Mitchell wasn't sure about needed... but he knew what he planned to use it for.
Hello endless hours of future fun.

They were going to learn a spell to make things go up. Penelope wrote the incantation on her notes parchment and jotted down a few things about what the charm did. Why would they need to make things shoot up? This charm sounded much more dangerous than basic levitation spells. Why would you need to shoot anything into the air? "To reach things that are too high up to get?" Maybe? Penelope needed some time to think about the possible uses of the charm.

Hey! Professor Q was almost impressed!! This was GREAT ne—
...
Uh.
......
And just like that all signs of excitement were gone. And the grin was wiped straight off his face. And Zander deflated just a little, further down in his chair. Well THAT was embarrassing. Quigley basically just called him out in front of the entire class. His pride was SHATTERED, didn’t anyone else want to take note of that? How come people liked this guy anyways? Professor Q was evil. No wonder Kevin hated him.
When Quigley posed another question, Zander found himself very quiet for a moment. Should he even attempt to answer this time? And risk getting his intelligence questioned again? He probably shouldn’t try anymore. But saying silent would mean that Catman won. And Zander Adair was not a quitter, okay? He was going to get this guy to like him eventually, okay!? Or maybe not like him. Maybe just tolerate? Or not make him a fool in front of the entire class? Either way, Zander wasn’t gonna give up, okay?
”If something is falling and you don’t want it to hit the ground.” HA. That was probably the most intelligent answer Zander could ever come up with. He thought about it SO hard. There was NO way that Professor Q could shut him down again. No way. HA.

Kace heard his answer was correct and I mean he already knew it. I mean he needed to take them in the muggle world. He used them all the time in the malls and sometimes universities when he went to visit Belle. Anywho back onto the lesson. He saw the spell they were learning and he scribbled it down onto his notebook. Hmmm he thought he heard about it before. Maybe his grandma used that spell before. She might have used to flip pancakes like some student mentioned.
He raised his hand to contribute an idea, "Professor I think I would use that spell to perfect my dunk shot when I shot hoops. You need a little air to dunk the basketball." He shrugged and waited to see his reaction.

Oh, they would be shooting stuff in the air. Now everything made sense, because Lux had been starting to wonder what elevators had to do with anything. After all this was Charms class, not Muggle Studies.
As Professor Quigley talked, Lux wrote down the spell while listening to every word. She wasn't too sure what she would use this for, but it was good to know. Might even come up on her NEWT. Besides, spells were always dead useful to have in the back pocket in case a situation arose. Tessa had taught her all about preparation ages ago, and the older girls advice and knowledge would always stay with her.
A LOT of people were mentioning blasting THEMSELVES into the air, and Lux sure hoped that was not what they would be doing today because she'd have a panic attack right there in the classroom. Just thinking about it made her feel faint...

Okay... no elevator for Hogwarts then, though he could see why it would be better than taking the millions of stairs, especially when one had to get from the Divination Tower out to the Greenhouses. It would be a speed factor. OR they could just be allowed to bungee or abseil out of a tower window!
Ahem.
Anyway, moving on.
Shooting things in the air sounded promising, and a particular image came to mind.
Hand up, Zeke inquired, "Professor, if you have enough power or enough people do the charm all at once, could it be used to launch people into space? I know Professor Airey's always wanted to be an astronaut." Or he was one, or something... but it WAS a thing.

If there's an elevator in Hogwarts, that would be great. Especially the Gryffindor common room was in seventh floor. But so far, the moving staircase was helping enough, right? Quickly the Korean boy scribbled the spell in his notebook.
