| | |  Charms Lesson 1 - Going Up!
_____________________________ It's bright and early Monday morning and time for the first Charms lesson of the term. As you enter, you notice the room is in it's typical set up with the desks and chairs lined in three neat rows to allow easy access should the Professor need to move about--though this is highly unlikely.
The windows, as usual are wide open letting in the natural light from the outdoors. Nothing like a little fresh air and a BRIGHT classroom to keep everyone awake after what was a large breakfast.
The Professor stands to the front, leaned against his desk waiting for the students to arrive. If he looks tired, he probably is...but that's nothing new, is it? Behind him the board remains blank for now except for these instructions:

It wasn't really an answer, was it? Dot was pleased that the professor had responded, but he hadn't given her much of an answer. Her shoulder slumped as she finished the last over the desk under the desk action and then scurried back to her seat. Fine, they'd just talk about it later.
"It's a door, sir. It might or might not be the door to a lift, but it is definitely a door."

Leah did not like sitting on desks. Chairs existed for a reason. Being short, sometimes she just could not plop down on desks like cool people could do. Fortunately, the ones here were pretty short themselves, so she walked over to her desk and sat down.
Oooh, a poster. She stared. And stared. And stared. It wasn't like she could not see it clearly, but she had no idea what that was. She felt like she had seen something like that before though. Leah listened to her classmates' answers instead. Ah, an elevator. Or a lift. They were the same thing, yeah? Its function sounded pretty cool.
Why DIDN'T they have one at Hogwarts? It would be easier to make one elevator than making one hundred and forty-two staircases.

Whew. Thank Merlin that they were done with the brutal activity. All Natalia wanted to do was to sit on one of those comfy chairs and...
What. He wasn't seriously right? WHY DID THE PROFESSOR DO THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT SHE WANTED EVERY TIME!
Natalia decided that she'd never want a cat. Ever.
Now that she was energized by the activity, Natalia marched her way to her desk, climbed onto it, and sat. Fine. The saddest thing, though, was that she couldn't even lean back; she'd fall right onto the cold, hard floor.
When the professor showed the class a picture of an elevator, Natalia couldn't help but think who wouldn't know the answer? How many people in this room had never been to a muggle facility before?
"It's a lift." Natalia spoke up, twirling her hair lazily while hanging her legs off of the desk. It wasn't a bad seating style at all, actually. She could do yoga up there if she wanted. "Lift, elevator, same thing." Natalia had heard it both ways, since she had lived in and visited both Europe and America. "I used to ride it all the time. The ones in skyscrapers are especially fun! The glass transparent ones are amazing!" Natalia remembered riding something of the sort, and she was both scared and excited at the same time. "I wouldn't recommend it if you're afraid of height though."

Adi had not realised Henric was the person behind him until he heard the other boy's voice saying something about him holding up the line. And was that laughter in Henric's voice? Hmph. Adi supposed if the roles were reversed he would have been laughing his head off too. "I'm going, I'm going,'' he mumbled. "You try hurrying along after banging your skull against a desk, Henny.''

Brilliantly awake? Adi had always been awake, Professor Feline! The only difference with the Adi that had entered the classroom moments ago and the one that had just completed the exercise was that the latter one had a mild headache. OhOhOH! They could take a seat on their DESKS? Cool! It wasn't often one got to do that so the sixth year had no problem flopping down on one.
His eyes followed Quigley's wand and he studied the poster. Hand up, Adi said, ''It's an elevator, Professor. Lots of people have been known to get stuck in one of those when it malfunctions. It carries persons from one floor to another in buildings.'' Unfortunately, he didn't have any interesting stories to volunteer involving the objects.

Feeling more awake from all the exercise, Lux headed back to her desk and took a seat on it. Eh, she didn't mind not using a chair; it wasn't every day that they got to try different seating arrangements in class and this made her feel taller. Getting comfy, she crossed her legs and gave her arms a good stretch.
Looking at the poster that Professor Quigley displayed for them, Lux knew immediately what the device was. She had been to plenty of muggle buildings before. Raising her hand she said, "that's an elevator. I've been in them loads of times and they are used in buildings to take people from one floor to another. Usually they work perfectly, but sometimes they malfunction and the people are trapped inside." Fortunately that had never happened to her, because she would probably have a panic attack even though she had never been claustrophobic like Bay. Being trapped in an elevator just sounded scary. | |

Merlin. All this climbing and crawling sure made a boy tired. Or well, at least it made Zander tired. Though he didn't dare stop in the middle of the trail, as he HAD to make Professor Q like him again. Or just like him. 'Cause come to think of it, Catman never really liked him from the beginning. Man, this was such a struggle. Was it even worth trying anymore? Probably not. Did that mean he'd stop trying? Also, probably not. 'Cause Zander Adair was no quitter. Even if it took all the apples in the word, he'd make this happen... Or fail trying.
Probably the latter.
Speaking of failing and trying, Quiggers FINALLY called time out. THANK MERLIN. Zander thought it would never end. He wanted it to end, but he didn't think it would, y'know? Anyways, they had been here long enough... Could they leave now? Was class dismissed? Welp. He was trying to be hopeful, okay? Yeaaaaah. Maybe he'd have to try again next time.
He did, however, find his desk again and try to be all attentive with the question answering stuff. Though the amount of people who knew the answer was highly discouraging because Zander actually knew this one too. Except it wasn't impressive, apparently 'cause so did everyone else. "It's a lift," okay so he started just like everyone else, BUT Professor Q get a load of this!! Zander was about to be UNIQUE. Time to finally be impressed. "They play interesting music so people don't get bored while they've got to ride 'em. And despite popular belief, no matter how many times you press the lift's buttons... It'll still take the same amount of time for it to arrive." SEE no one said that. Plus this is really what one ought to know about the lift. Forget all that stuff about transport.
Zander was being REAL helpful. HEH.
So Q, you impressed yet? That answer was WAY better than the three apples Zander contributed. It was probably worth FOUR apples. And Zander wasn't even going to hide the fact that he was super proud of it.

Zhenya had just managed to finish and have a quick stretch before Professor Quigley asked them back to their desks. She almost thought she would get in trouble for sitting on the desk, even though he had told them too. What if it was a trick question? It didn't seem to be… so she hoisted herself up onto the desk and sat. Rather comfortable.
She frowned at the photo. She was sure she had seen one somewhere, but wasn't sure where. Surely it was some kind of muggle thing. She raised her hand, always trying to at least suggest SOMETHING, and waited, then said "Professor is it some kind of door?" Did she have to be more specific? "A muggle invented… magical door?" Was that what she remembered? A magically opening door?

Ilia managed all of the desks without getting bumped or run over or getting any bruises , so she was pleased enough with that. She had no idea what this had to do with charms, but she wasn't the teacher so she didn't question it yet. So....no chairs now......she didn't become overly concerned about that either and simply leaned against her desk. She had a feeling that something even stranger would happen, when she saw the poster she felt that she was right. She had no idea what it was or did, so she simply listened attentively and watched. So it was a muggle contraption, an elevator...or lift. It went up and down.......they had just unexpectedly gone up and down.......was there a pattern going on? Why they were learning their ups and downs in charms class she hadn't the foggiest idea though. | |

No chairs? No problem...he put his hands on the desk and hopped up to sit. The wood felt smooth and he let himself be comfortable by leaning slightly back. He had a good view of the classroom, why not? He could get use to this position.
Henric nodded agreeably with the others who answered the professor's question regarding the poster. He had rode the lift too many times before, he could easily guessed what it was even if it been said already.
"Yep..yep..that's a lift,alright,"he muttered to noone in particular. Adi got it right again, he gave him a thumbs up. Correctoo.They were definitely not magical doors for sure, but he wished it was.

Despite the fact that MOST of the students were happy with this running exercise - Noel Wallace was not. He fell and rolled and it was just embaressing really. Not to mention chaotic. So when the professor FINALLY let them stop - Noel Wallace collapsed on the floor instead of finding himself a chair to give himself a break.
AAAAH. Breathe in. Breathe out.
So while just lying on the floor, Noel looked at the poster and held his hand up before speaking: "THAT is a elevator, sir"

Angel continued to go up and over the desk and then under them, trying to get herself woken up without hurting herself, she continued until the Professor told them to stop and then she went back to her desk, she listened to what the Professor said.
She raised her hand straight away. "Professor it's an elevator..." She was muggle born so she had been in them loads. "Sometimes they break down and you get stuck in them." Angel sighed. "Though when I was Nine, I was messing about with an elevator, I decided to press all the buttons to see what would happen." Angel had at the time thought that it would be fun.

They weren't going to be sitting on chairs today? Well alright then that was perfectly fine by her. Hady made her way over to where her desk and been and quickly wiped off the top of the desk were everyone had been stepping on it or crawling on it. Then placing her hands on the desk she pushed herself upwards and slipping onto the desk on her knees only then to turn around to sit on her bottom, her legs swinging back and forth a little bit.
Listening silently she only raised her hand once she saw what the photo was of. "It's an elevator Professor and normally used in buildings to take people from floor to floor, though sometimes people can have one in their homes if like a family member or something is able to use stairs." Yup she knew that was true cause she had been in a very large home once that had one because their young child was in a wheelchair. | |

Well he was definitely awake after that. Michael perched himself onto his desk, crossing his ankles and waiting to see what else the Professor had planned.
He glanced at the picture and then raised his hand. "That appears to be an elevator." And he had been in one and oh boy did he have a story but there were young kids in the room so it was best he kept that to himself. "The muggle ones go up and down. They have an electric motor, cables and pulley's and counterweights to balance them."

OOH YES YES ROWAN KNEW WHAT THAT WAS. They were pretty much everywhere in the muggle world, so she couldn't really have avoided them. But everyone else seemed to know too, so there wasn't really much point in raising her hand just to say 'lift' again, was there? No.
She made herself comfortable on her desk and swung her legs a bit, listening to everyone else's answers. She didn't have any interesting lift stories, since she rarely actually went in them. So listening was gonna have to suffice for now.

After sucking up making friends with the professor, after pinning his name to his shirt, after running around the classroom and having a completely and utter blast of a time, Benzi finally settled down on the desk and put his Charms thinking cap on. He voted to do that every lesson, Professor. Yes. An excellent addition to his morning work out.
Note to self: take Noel with him. He looked like a dead fish running around.
Anyways. Yes. Class. He lifted his hand (GEDDIT?!). "That's a lift, sir," he said, like they all did, because yes. And he was most definitely not going to share his experience on a lift. Nope. "... Isn't there one in the Ministry?" he was pretty sure there was one. In fact, he remembered being in years ago. No idea what for though. He'd been with Ja- NEVER MIND MOVING ON.

Yes! Sitting on desks! So much more exciting than sitting on chairs, at least in Hayden's opinion. She hadn't quite finished the course, but that was okay. It only meant that she was close to the desk she had originally occupied, so she simply stopped and went to go sit on it. Yeah, sitting on the desk was great. She sat all criss-cross applesauce and waited for the actual lesson part to start. And look, there was a poster. A really big poster. Hayden did know what that was and she raised her hand eagerly.
"That's an elevator professor. They're used to bring people from one floor to another if they don't want to or aren't able to use the stairs. I've been on one and it's fun to jump right when it's about to stop. It makes you feel like you're floating for a second." She knew more about elevators too, but she stopped herself from saying more because she had already contributed enough and she didn't want to get carried away talking. Other people knew stuff to so it was time to listen to them. Yes.

Oh good. They were done. And she had regained some blood pressure by just sitting down against the wall and breathing. BUT what was this? No chairs? Sit on their desks?
Well this was strange, but nonetheless the Ravenclaw carefully helped herself into position on desk ... at least she wasn't moving so she should be good now in terms of not feeling nauseous.
Except whilst she was collecting herself, apparently she missed the first question about the picture of the elevator. Well she didn't miss it, but everyone had already answered and pretty much said the same thing and she wasn't one to necessarily repeat the same thing over and over. But being a half-blood and having ridden one herself, perhaps she could add something to conversation about the mechanics or what it feels like to ride.
Raising her hand, "I've been in one of those, Professor. And I must say they're generally a very smooth ride up and down, unless it's in need of maintenance in which case it could feel shaky and nauseating."

Aw yeah, totally got away with that. Toby grinned to himself as he finished weaving over and under those final desks for the second time. And last time, as Quiggers was instructing everyone to take a seat at the desks. No, wait... on the desks. COOL.
Slightly out of breath and very exhilarated, Toby went back to his own desk and perched on the edge (where, of course, he began to bounce), grinning and looking up to the front of the class where Quigs was doing his teaching thaaang. OOH. He totally knew what THAT was, and raised his hand. Everyone had said what it was by now but, y'know, he was still gonna talk because he was FAR too enthusiastic to just sit there bouncing in silence.
"It's a LIFT, Professor, like everyone said. And it's on the top floor, I think, 'cause both the little arrows at the top are pointing down," Toby explained, moving his arm to point point point. Y'know, important information. "In the muggle world they take people between floors and stuff, for people who can't use the stairs, or don't want to. My-... someone I know got stuck in one before, for a few hours, because sometimes they just randomly stop. Sometimes they barely feel like they're moving. You step in, and a few seconds later you're on a different floor, like Muggle magic."

Norah kept smiling as she went to stand behind her desk, feeling her legs kinda wishing that she had a chair but she told them to shut it 'cause it was CLASS TIME. She watched with hazel eyes widened as Professor Quigley showed a big picture of...something. A lift! It was a lift! SHE'D BEEN IN ONE OF THOSE HOLEY MOLEY THEY WERE SO MUCH FUN.
The fourth year waved a hand around in the air because THIS WAS SUCH A GOOD DAY. They were going to talk about LIFTS. "It's a lift! They take you up and down in building and stuff when you don't want to use stairs and they're a lot funner than stairs and they're the funnest I think, 'cause if you jump up right when it starts going down it feels like your stomach is falling out of you!" She'd ridden the lift up and down and up and down and up and down that time with Sebby and Marcel. It was like MAGIC except for muggles which was CRAZY. "But if you go up and down too many times the person who owns the lift will yell at you because apparently you're not supposed to do that. It's fun, though!" COULD THEY PLAY IN ONE TODAY PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE?[/colr]

Sit on the desk? Penelope was really not a sitting on desks kind of person, so she remained standing behind her desk. So, what was this lesson about? She looked at the poster that Professor Quigley was showing them. "It's an elevator or a lift. It is used for transport between floors of a building. Not good for claustrophobic people." Penelope didn't like elevators. Stairs were much better. What did elevators have to do with the lesson? Please don't be that they would have to get in an elevator.

Well Dante was most certainly awake. Tired but awake. But why no chairs. It was not the most comfortable to be sitting on a desk. When he could be sitting in a chair. And it was a lift or elevator. Whatever word you wanted to use. The only thing you had to worry about in one of those is being really close to someone who smelled horrible or awkward conversations. And besides getting stuck in one. You know that can be terrifying.
It has already been said about 50 times.
So Dante stayed quiet and tried to relax in case more exercise was in his future.

The running under and over desks was definitely unexpected, but it wasn't too bad overall. She appreciated a little exercise in the morning, especially to wake up better for class.
And even now the unexpected continued - they were allowed to sit on their desks and the professor was showing a Muggle invention, a lift/elevator. Very interesting. Surely had something to do with what they were learning today and not just for the 'fun' of it. Perhaps whatever the charm was would help them all use the moving staircases a little less.
Jenna wasn't raising her hand to answer yet though, considering most of the others had covered the basics of it. She wasn't taking notes yet either, since all this was stuff she knew, having used elevators many times before. But she was definitely listening and paying attention, don't worry.

It was indeed a lift, or a pair of lift doors as Goosey had suggested and as he was about to piggy back on and take all of the credit for. The problem with sharing that answer hadn't so much lied in the fact that everyone had said that particular answer, but that from Cutty's reactions with the Professor he wasn't really one to be so...simple. Was he really looking for an obvious answer? Cutty had doubts.
Raising his wand hand he gave a less cut and dry option, "It's a means of getting either below or above ones present location. A transportation option where no others are possible or efficient." Everything in life was more or less a tool to be used, wasn't it afterall?

While he wasn't in terrible shape, Gabe rightly struggled with most physical activities. He didn't get out much...because the Library just made the most sense. Sure, walking the many, MANY stairs and corridors of the school was enough to keep them fit enough....
He'd barely made it through the course...chest heaving; face covered in a light sheen of sweat...as he was a sweater. It was practically unavoidable with any physical exertion. And this was why he wasn't into sports. He didn't like sweating. It was gross....and he FELT sticky now.

....and he couldn't get the words out...as to what that picture was. Naturally, he KNEW it was a lift...but words. Words were difficult at the moment. Maybe when he...was able to breath properly.
