Default Astronomy Lesson 3 :: Legacy of Space Exploration

One of the first things you experience as you enter the classroom - something really not uncommon these days given the state of the castle - is the skin crawling sensation of sticky silk latching on to you, your clothing, face, and hair. Batting away the webs, you may notice a lint roller or two suspended in the air from these unwanted ‘decorations’ of the classroom. No doubt left there after getting tangled up so much while Professor Flamsteed tried to clean up the place before class that evening.

The Astronomy classroom itself is arranged in the usual semi circle of desks facing the empty blackboard. A large yellow box with a bold black question mark levitates in the front of the room in clear sight. Professor Flamsteed can be seen circling it with his fingers stroking at his invisible beard as he ‘mmhmms’. Every now and then you will see him walk over to the box and peek inside a couple times, each time looking more curious and surprised than the last.

Did you remember to use the lint roller on the small table outside of the classroom? It was there next to, unbeknownst to the professor, altered sign that now reads, "Not to be used as a brush for your hair" and has the signature of a former student in the bottom right corner.

So come on in and have a seat, and possibly wipe off your seat before doing so unless you fancy a lacey bum thanks to the webs all over. Class will begin soon.

Lesson Progression
question 1 :: what is in the box?
question 2 :: how have these objects been improved by the study and exploration of space?
question 3 :: Do we only send people up in space in hopes of generating useful by-products of the research conducted in space?
question 4 :: How is the box like outer space?
question 5 :: What does the word 'potential' mean to you?
CONTENTS OF THE BOX REVEALED!
OOC: This is NOT your character’s last Astronomy class for the term but will be the last one properly RP’d.

Please be sure you are familiar with Professor Flamsteed's rules BEFORE you post in this lesson. We will know if you haven't read them! All SnitchSeeker site rules apply.

Class will officially begin in approximately 14 hours from the time of this post.
CLASS HAS OFFICIALLY STARTED! Please to not post your character arriving late unless you are willing to accept the IC consequences.

Did he have some powerful connections inside the school? Was he the Headmistress' secret lover or something? How on Earth had he gotten this position?

ANYWAY.....back to Zander.

"You should sit down." Because he was taller than her, did he know? Yes of course he did. Which was why it was even more embarrassing for him to currently be at her mercy. His life was in her hands. Or, well, the life of his HAIR was in her hands. She pulled out her wand and just looked at him. "Unless there's a spell that can turn back time and give you more braincells I don't really think there's another way." Maggie had lowered her voice to make sure Professor Flamsteed didn't hear her remark.

So...? Shall we then?

Still waiting for Zander to do what she'd told him (like, RUDE), Maggie briefly glanced back to the box Flamsteed was on about. "Pebbles?"

"But--" Zander stood there just blinking. Completely dumbstruck. Okay, no he was almost 68% sure that the sign said to use the lint roller as a brush. Maybe even 78% for that matter!! Which meant he was pretty darn sure because Zander Adair was hardly ever 78% sure about anything. What the heck?! Someone else HAD to have seen that, right? His eyes were working perfectly fine, thank you very much.

Merlin.

What. The. Heck.

And here he thought he was two steps ahead of the game. Well he may have been two steps ahead but he also had a lint roller in his hair so really, who was the real winner here? Definitely not Zander. Or Flamsteed. It was probably Maggie tbh. That girl was having WAY to much fun with this.

Alright, alright he was sitting. Happy? RUDE. Maggie was SO rude. And once upon a time he had thought the girl was an angel willing to offer help. More like one of them dark angels of the underworld or whatever. This girl was Merlin's evil twin. Just as mighty, but probably a fourth the size (which meant her evil was more concentrated because there was a lot less of her to take it up).

"Okay, okay... Just don't let me go bald," he sat down in a chair and basically held his breath because his entire life was on the line here. He had been bald before thanks Bart and #NEVERAGAIN. Despite what Neol Wallace thought about the matter it's a very good thing Zander can't read minds because -___- thanks, Wallace Zander did NOT think less blonde would be a good idea thankyouverymuch.

Was he being dramatic? Maybe. BUT THERE IS A LINT ROLLER IN HIS HAIR. He ought to be. It was his right. Or uhh, something like that.

SPOILER!!: The question

Ants on a log! “Now, each of these items have been improved in some way thanks to the U.S. Space Program, in more ways than one in some cases. I would like you each to now,” he strolled over to the box again and took another lingering look inside. “To use your imaginations and guess what improvements might have resulted from the study and exploration of space.” Closing the lid on the yellow box again, he gave his cardboard television set a firm tap. “My apologies for not bringing in the real things,” he apologized, tapping on the computer and television specifically. “I tried to recreate them with as much accuracy as possible.”

Forgive the man for needing to do SOMETHING to pass the time in his office. Cardboard reconstruction had been quite...therapeutic. Sort of.

“You may write your ideas down on a piece of parchment and, when you are ready, please raise your hand and share just one possibility.”

Task assigned, he was going to go back to oogling over his box while they thought things over.
OOC: No need to wait for Professor Flamsteed to call on your character, just go ahead and assume that he did to have your character speak

Writing down ideas for all three on a piece of parchment IC is optional and NOT required, but there could be some bonus participation points

Class will resume approximately 24 hours from the time of this post.

Sorry Flammy, but Zander had better things to worry about. So he only pretended to scribble down a list, whilst attempting to steal glances over at Maggie. Had she done it yet? What was taking so long? Merlin please not too much hair. It was precious.

SPOILER!!: uh, parchment

TV: satellites or something *insert tons of unnecessary scribbles here*
Computer: improved technology??? something spacey used in computer stuff??? *more doodles*
Container: Airtight seals so food stays fresh?? *LOTS OF SCRIBBLES*

........ BUT WHAT CAN SPACE DO FOR MY HAIR?!
These are the real questions we should be asking.

And that was just about how interested Zander was at the moment. Ahem. He was a bit preoccupied.

Merlin. If all his hair was gone by the end of the lesson.... Space would definitely hear about this fiasco.

Dot wiggled impatiently in her seat as she watched the rather useless attempts to remove the roller from Zander's hair. It was easy... didn't they know ANYTHING? You just had to YANK it really hard and it would come out on its own. Boom.

Zander would cry, but boys generally cried a lot. It was how they were made.

Oh, questions. Yes, okay. Hair pulling later.

SPOILER!!: Answers from Dottie
1. Television: Probably spacemen need to be able to communicate with people on the ground and you can't do that with PLUGS and ELECTRICICICICITY. So they had to invent a way to communicate without wires. I call it WIRELESS.

Computer: Same. Also, big old computers are heavy and it's already hard to fly with all the gross dry food you have to carry. Carry less food or make the computer smaller? I know my vote.

Plastictubthing: It burps! Endless hours of entertainment for free!

Ahem. Dot raised her hand. "Make it burp, professor, and then make it say 'scuse me."

Henric was more curious now what was in the box. It made him want to summon the box with his wand with the 'Accio' spell. Hmph.Oh well...he took out his parchment and started writing:

SPOILER!!: Henric's Parchment

Computer: I use it mainly to play multiplayer online games like DOTA(Defense of the Ancients) or simply surf the net. And no, we don't actually surf on a wave or something. But I think it would be cool if we can do that.Yup. Anyway, back to the point...computers have been use as a way of communication device through time and space. They can be used to control satellites and all sorts of gizmos in order for them to monitor muggle space exploration.

Television: I think without these satellites in space, I don't think we have a lot of channels to watch. Perhaps determine the weather forecast? Other than that, I have no clue how does it benefit us, we just lay on the sofa and eat potato chips all day. Uh..not me...I mean who watch television nowadays anyway.....its all about gaming people.GAMES. Thank you SPACE EXPLORERS.

Container For Raisins: I bet they're tasty in space, now that the astronauts have a lot of food choices to choose from. All packed and neatly organised in the special container.I mean, don't they use to eat food out of tubes. Hopefully, they label them correctly and not to mistake them with toothpaste.

His answers were a little too nonsensical but he raised his hands anyway,"Professor, in space...I think with the containers it is to prevent any food contents or crumbles from floating away and get into their fancy spaceship equipment, contaminating them in the process."

Penelope looked at the items. A computer, a television, and raisins. No, not raisins, a Tupperware container. How had these items been improved by the U.S. space program? She had a few ideas about the computer and the television, but she had no idea how raisins could have bern improved by the space program. Perhaps Tupperware containers were originally designed to contain astronaut food? She didn't remember if they had learned anything like that in the lesson on astronaut food, but in that lesson Professor Flamsteed had been possessed by Captain Hook and the lesson had turned into a purιed food fight. They might have missed some things that they were supposed to learn in that lesson.

SPOILER!!: notes
Computer: Space shuttles needed computers to navigate in space. Computers were improved as different needs for computers arose.

Television: satellites

Tupperware: Contains food and helps food stay fresh. Designed to contain astronaut food?

Raisins: ?

The Idea Man Kori-Kins

Angel listened to the Professor and wrote down loads of ideas, she wanted to share them all but she knew the Professor wouldn't like her doing that, she had thought about how the computer is build, how the tub has a great seal, how it can contain things, she thought about for the t.v how it has loads of channels, how it has the colour, maybe all thanks to space.

But there was one thing in particular that she wanted to say.

Angel raised her hand. "Professor didn't the space people find out that you can get a strong signal from space, so you can broadcast show from all around the world, like big sporting events, and also you could watch loads of great shows like the enterprise, and maybe one day we'll have their food machine as our own." Angel thought that would be cool and she also wanted to holodeck as that looked so entertaining, why wasn't someone building the enterprise in real life.

*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

... all those guesses and they weren't getting an answer? Or well they had to wait for an answer. Oh boo.

And Zander still had the lint roller stuck in his hair.

Noel needed things to get to their conclusion, he was feeling rather impatient today.

Oh questions. Opening up his notebook, Noel began scribbling:

SPOILER!!: scribbles!notes

Don't know. Don't know. Dont know.

Because I am not sure how these used to be when space exploration hadn't happened. So um.

Doodle.

WizRiots.

Doodle.

..... Noel was TRYING or not but nothing was coming to him, so he just pretended to scribble and signed his name a few times and let others answer. He was particularly interested in what Dot may have written down to come to that conclusion. Was she being super random?

Marsha was grinning at Lance. Like, nothing was funny as going to school with witches and wizards when things started to go wrong. ‘cause in all honesty… she was just going to tug and pry the hair off of the roller - but she would leave the older girl to using magic. Heh.

SPOILER!!: Lance

Things.

They had tupperware at home, though none of the other stuff. But it was fiiiiiine. Cool even. He could use his imaaaaginatioooon to figure it out. Except his imaaaaginaaaaation... was full of cobwebs. Almost literally. That little wispy piece on his desk was SUCH A THOUGHT KILLER.

Space made tham mor fun.

Plopping into the seat next to him, she laughed a little and then focused on Professor Airey. He did seem more and more eccentric these days… and she really needed to give him his flip-flops back. Hmmm. Maybe tomorrow after classes.

What did they have to do with space… whut even? Marsha looked curiously at the objects and then down at her blank parchment. She wrote the four things down on the parchment and filled them in in a random order. What? He brain didn’t want to give her them in the order she had written down… but at lest she had some form of answer.

Text Cut: Parchment
Television: Something to do with satellites?

Computer: Made them try to get smaller. Computers used to be really bulky from what I’ve seen in old pictures at the library - which would take up a lot of space internally… so they made them smaller to give the astronauts more space. Ha. Space.

Tub/Raisins: Maybe something to do with the airlock systems the tubs had? I don’t think food rots or goes off if it is in a vaccum tight container.

Putting her hand into the air as she looked at how Lance was getting on, she sighed and rolled her eyes. She would help him in a minute.

”Professor… I don’t know if it is because of space - but my Mum always puts food in air-tight containers to keep them fresh but I think that there was something about vacuum tight containers keeping food fresh in space?”

After she had done that and others started taking their turns, she looked at Lance. ”Lance,” She said softly, pointing at his parchment. ”You spell them with an ‘e’ not an ‘a’... and you need an ‘e’ on the end of more.” She smiled at him. Best friend to the rescue.

Kate eyed the three objects the professor was showing them. A computer, a television, and a tupperware container. She knew scientists had found ways to improve them, but she'd never figured out HOW. All she could give were three wild guesses. Reaching for her quill and dipping it in ink, she wrote:

* Computer = I know we rely on signals and service to get Internet. I think scientists have found better ways to improve both of those, so we not only get better access here on Earth, but when astronauts are flying in space, they can use computerized equipment to communicate with others and do their work.

* Television = I think this is pretty much the same as computers in that scientists have found ways to improve the service we get. I read that once people had to have large antennas on their TVs to get them to work, but over time, people figured out a way to make TVs wider, thinner, and without those big antennas.

* Tupperware = I honestly have no idea here. Maybe scientists have figured out a better way to make the products so we can use recycled materials or something like that. Or maybe they developed a better mix of materials to make the Tupperware better and stronger.

Yeah, she was really lost on that last one. Oh, well. Those were her ideas, and that's all she had for now.

Okay. Good. Zander had sat down. Good booooooooy. If he hadn't been wearing that lint roller, Maggie might have petted his head. As it were though, he was dumb so she couldn't do that. What she COULD do was roll her eyes a little. "Don't worry." About going bald that is. Actually in general. She was in class. Soooort of trying to get Professor Flamsteed to like her enough to not hate her.

So. Seriously. Don't worry, Zander.

Stepping closer, Maggie took hold of the strands of hair that were attached to the lint roller (again, SERIOUSLY???). And then she just quickly moved her wand without prior warning and said, "Diffindo." It was easier that way. Ah yes and there it was. The lint roller. And Zander's hair. "You should get a haircut, you know." Like seriously. That just looked weird.

The girls wouldn't like it, just saying.

This time she did give Zander a pat on the head before moving away and presenting him with her trophy. Or you know, the lint roller. "There you go, Professor." There was a lot of smiling going on to, just FYI. She was SUCH a nice person, did he know? Yes? He better start believing that. She had PROOF now, see?

After that Maggie made her way over to sit down next to Noel. What were they supposed to do? Write something down? She didn't have time for that obviously. She'd been busy saving lives. Soon they would all realize that she was their one true leader. Yes. Glancing over to see what Noel had written down she gave him a look. REALLY??? Was he serious? Although it was amusing too. So, there was a small smirk playing around her lips too.

So Heather had been trying to concentrate, honest. But she just kept being distracted by the ever returning cobwebs. Seriously, it was a problem, as she could feel them forming on her arms and even her hair. Blech. Was this some kind of payback for last term from the Acromantulas? Because they should know that they had eaten the one responsible for insulting them and most of the rest of the castle had been completely innocent in that mess.

Anyway, question answering time. She thought about it a bit, even writing down some ideas before coming to a conclusion. "Television and communication in general was improved by space exploration because that exploration lead to satellites and satellites have made things much more mobile. No more just sitting around on the couch, stuffing your face with pizza, chips, popcorn and all that stuff."

And that was just about how interested Zander was at the moment. Ahem. He was a bit preoccupied.

Merlin. If all his hair was gone by the end of the lesson.... Space would definitely hear about this fiasco.

Oh thank MERLIN all that was over.

Rubbing his temples one last time, the astronomer made his way over to retrieve his lint roller.

"Stellar spellwork, Miss Traulton. Take 5 points for it AND your ability to follow directions." UNLIKE SOME PEOPLE! First Miss Valentine earlier in the term with spinning in place and making herself sick enough to throw up in his general direction...and now Mr. Adair using it to brush his hair.

Pity the man was so worked up over the sight of it all that he was stupidly ignoring the warning signs from the prefect's classmates.

"As for you, Mr. Adair. 5 points from Gryffindor for failing to follow instructions and 5 points for being a good sport and allowing yourself a haircut in the middle of class."

It wasn't all THAT bad. Maybe. Just wear a cap and all would be fine.

Just not in his classroom, thank you very much.

She pointed at her notes for emphasis.
Pausing for a moment as the Gryffindor spoke, Airey couldn't blame her for getting a tad confused between the two objects. To the young mind raised away from muggle things, it was easy to get confused between a television and a computer. Especially when they were cardboard replicas.

"If you are perhaps referencing satellites, you would be correct," he nodded while gently smiling at the young lady. "Although I do believe computers utilize Google Maps more than television." Ahem.

AHA!

Mostly in thanks to some personal correspondence, the astronomer was feeling a LITTLE more like his 'old' self. Enough that he was willing to leap on desks again anyway.

"PRECISELY!" he roared, feet now planting firmly on the Ravenclaw's desk. He was avoiding her parchment, ink well, and quill - for the record. "Satellites!" His eyes aglow with excitement, the professor went into a mini lecture where he stood.

"Satellites were the US Space Program’s first steps into space, same with many other countries as they were necessary to retrieve the information necessary to send humans up in to space safely. Today, without the use of satellites, the video of events seen on television by muggles, like the CNN channel you see on our model television over here, would have to be sent over phone lines, which you studied with Professor Moxley I believe, or physically transported to the news station. This would slow down the process of reporting of news and be even less efficient than owls. Our Wizarding Wireless Network also benefits from the use of muggle satellites as magic modifies the signals sent down from them to help broadcasting. Muggles, of course, will only hear static should they happen to accidentally tune in to one of our channels."

FASCINATING STUFF, YEAH!?

We were able to see better quality images of what's up on the Red planet." Yesh, Adi knew that the Mars Rover came waaaaaaaay after television was developed but he was just using it as an example.
"Yes yes yes," he nodded, still standing on Miss Guidry's desk. "THANKS TO SATELLITEEEEEEEEEEEEES."

IF shriveled could be considered perfect, which Norah didn't agree with but y'know.
"RIGHT!" he exclaimed, pointing towards the Hufflepuff as he jumped off the Ravenclaw's desk and strolled over towards her. "While the process for making raisins is, for the most part, a natural process," he explained, using the term natural rather loosely as the processing procedures varied. "NASA DID invent dehydrated food for space flight, much like the dried fruit and raisins that we enjoy today. As we...er...I HOPE some of you learned a few terms ago, dehydrated food lasts longer, is lighter, and takes up less space, which are all essential for life in space."

Because people could be clumsy with food, and no one wanted to loose their meal to the dirty ground.
MORE FINGER POINTING. "EXCELLENT," he applauded, now walking towards Miss Carrington. "The very Tupperware you see here is made from a hardened plastic that was invented for use on the Apollo missions to the Moon! Plastic had already been invented when NASA got their hands on it, the first recorded form of plastic dating back to 1907, but what they did was modified the existing form to make harder and less flexible."

Nearly tripping over his feet as he pointed excitedly in Mr. Atreyu's direction, the professor did manage a gargled 'Stellar' before his attention was drawn elsewhere.

It was, really, a completely innocent observation, and once Toby had opened his mouth, he found it difficult to shut up again (as usual). But shut up he did.

"I bet the space people had something to do with the airtight seal on the plastic box thing, right? Like an airlock? Was tupperware maybe based on airlocks used in space and stuff? Only it keeps raisins fresh rather than keeping humans fresh. Alive, I mean. Or maybe astronauts like raisins and stuff so they made tupperware to keep their food fresh for space, but I bet not cardboard raisins, except I don't think that's right 'cause if you open a tupperware box of raisins in a spacecraft in space they'd go eeeeeeeverywhere and then they might jam up the equipment. Shutting up, now.

Again.

Someone might want to duct tape his mouth closed soon, though.
"Demonstration purposes, Mr. Toby. Purely demonstration purposes," he replied with a slightly dismissive hand wave. He had learned from his brief spell as Hooksteed that food in the classroom, and in the hand of students, was an AWFUL idea.

But there was some more excited pointing and loud exclamations of AIRTIGHT before moving on.

AIRTIGHT!

There's something called internet, which is linked to towers, the ones that get a phone signal, and the satellites can provide signals to provide internet to the computers for the muggles to use. The TV was helped with satellite signals as well, so that people who watch the TV can actually see the image being broadcast through a certain channel. The raisins in the container were developed from the dehydrating of foods, which helped with nutrition for the astronauts, decreasing the water content of food. So... apricots, apples, pears, grapes, they were able to preserve these foods and take them into space. But also the container itself, the space mission might have come up with methods to improve the construction of the plastic. Make it harder, longer lasting. And similarly, could the development of plastic helped to improve the structure of the TVs and computers, their plastic components?" Zhenya had to stop for breath. Did she ever talk that much?

"Yes, yes, very good," he nodded. "Space food today is not solely dehydrated foods like it was in the beginning and almost exclusively uses the same kind of packaging used for the military's Meals Ready to Eat kits, or the room-temperature tuna pouches you can buy in a muggle grocery store. Essentially, if it can be kept at room temperature, they can keep it in one of their containers and eat in space."

They might have missed some things that they were supposed to learn in that lesson.

Computer: Space shuttles needed computers to navigate in space. Computers were improved as different needs for computers arose.

Television: satellites

Tupperware: Contains food and helps food stay fresh. Designed to contain astronaut food?

Raisins: ?

And more diligent note taking from Miss Wright. He would not look over the top of her head to look at that juuuuuust in case she suddenly spooked and looked up thus whacking him square in the nose and possibly sending both of them to the hospital wing.

Nodding some more at Miss Valentine, Airey found himself wishing she had picked an incarnation of Star Trek that had a better finale as an example.

Completely ruined what had been a stellar program.

"Satellites, exactly," he nodded, clearly distracted with Star Trek thoughts.

Text Cut: Heather's parchment
Computers- the ability to use your cell phone as one; Internet; Google Maps/Street/Earth (which, when you really think about it, is soooooo creepy)
Tupperware- new materials?
EXCITED HANDS RAISED TO THE HEAVENS! "SATTELITES!"

And that was all he said on the matter.

Seeing no more hands raised, Airey waved his wand towards the board to make the following appear.
Quote:
Tupperware
  • made from a hardened plastic that was invented for use on the Apollo missions to the Moon.
    • improved the plastic so that it was harder and less flexible, ideal for storing food.
  • NASA also invented dehydrated food for space flight

Television
  • has several plastic components that were developed by NASA that, ,without, all televisions would still be the large, console variety of the 1940’s and 50’s, and would be much more expensive to manufacture.
  • relies heavily upon satellites to receive news information the minute it happens from anywhere in the world.
    • Satellites were the U.S. Space Program’s first steps into space.
    • Without the use of satellites, the video of events we see on television would have to be sent over phone lines or physically transported to the news station
    • news anchors would only be able to broadcast from studios, and never live at the scene of the action.

Computer
  • without the Space Program, personal computers would not even exist today. today’s computers are small (used to fill entire rooms in the 1950’s and 60’s), lightweight, relatively inexpensive, and more powerful
  • airplanes (like the one seen on the screen of the computer) have fuel that is now safer and cleaner thanks to NASA.
    • Pilots no longer fly in fear of on-board explosions because of unstable fuel
    • improved fuel also allows aircraft to travel at greater rates of speed.
    • The steel that is used in building aircraft is also the same used in the construction of the Space Shuttle.
    • lightweight and remarkably strong, making the aircraft stronger, safer, and lighter, and thus decreasing fuel consumption.
Nodding at the board, Airey banished the three objects and returned to his yellow box, which he promptly looked inside once more with a smile. Closing the lid, he gave it a pat and rested his hand on top as if to make sure it stayed in place.

"Excellent, each and everyone of you. These are just SOME of the technological benefits that have resulted from space exploration, both for muggle and wizardingkind. But it begs the question, do you think that is the only reason that humans explore space? Do we only send people up in space in hopes of generating useful by-products of the research conducted there?"
OOC: sorry for the delay, again, and thank you all for your patience <3

This lesson will resume as soon as I find time to post again - which could be anywhere between 12 to 24 hours from the time of this post depending on in-class posting activity <3

Janelle gave a huge sigh of relief. She had gotten the answer right and that good. Professor Flamsteed went on to give more detailed information about satellites and all the other answers that her classmates had given. Janelle went into speed writing mode and tried to keep up with her notes.

Then there was another question to answer and Janelle raised her hand. "I don't think the only reason people explore space is to improve technology or make products based on their research. I think that some people just want to study the planets and the stars and all the different aspects of space. If the knowledge can be used to help us back on earth, that's a bonus."

Well, the answer to that question was 'obviously not', but at the moment, Kate couldn't come up with any really good reasons why humans went into outer space other then educating themselves, improving life for mankind, searching for other life forms, and... Oh, yeah!

Kate raised her hand. "We go into outer space to help protect the environment," she said. "For example, we learn more about the position of Earth and other bodies like the Sun, so we can know what to expect and how to not harm ourselves or the environment." She also wanted to add that we search for other life forms, but she figured she should save some answers for others.

Kate made a new column on her parchment and titled it 'Reasons Why We Go Into Outer Space'. She jotted down her own idea then glanced up to see who else had something to offer.

Whyyyy did they go into space? Dot had no clue. It was a total waste of time, honestly, since all the good stuff was on this planet. Maybe there was good stuff somewhere else, but that was sort of a long shot, right? Only people who always looked up and never bothered to look around thought there was better stuff up there.

That probably wasn't a winner answer, though.

"People always want to test their boundaries, Professor." Like in her inability to give a straight answer, for example.

Whoops. She totally meant a computer and not the television. Too much excitement going on with Zander's hair cut maybe. At least that was what she was going to blame it on anyways. AJ eyed her notes. Yup, she had them all right on paper, it was just her mouth that betrayed her.

Moving along...

Oh, she had an opinion on this. Yes she did. Her hand once again was in the air. "No way that's the only reason why we go into space. I think people can also go just for the thrill. It's an adventure right? Aliens, moon rocks and no gravity... where do I sign up?" What the others said was probably true as well, but her answer was more fun.

Y'know what would be awesome though?

If Professor Flamsteed stopped looking into that box and smiling.

Yea.

It was making him twitch.

Tapping the end of his quill upon his desk, and jiggling his leg (and his toes and bouncing his knee and humming slightly to himself), he lost focus of the wispy cobweb on his desk and actually paid attention. "Well, what about aliens?" he blurted out before his hand even reached halfway into the air. IT WAS UP! What was in the box?! "Or like, I mean, finding people like us? To relate to? So we aren't so alone in the universe?"

What's in the booooooox???

Enthusiastic 'yeses' to his answer. WHEEEE! Adi kept grinning at Airey. Whyyy? Because this was EXACTLY what he had referred to in his ode to Pebbles. The Suit jumping around on tables, he meant.

Anywho, he had to move onto making notes. Scribble, scribble, scribble! While he scribbled, the Hufflepuff put on his Thinking Hat again. Figuratively, of course. He had no such thing. LOL.

"We go there to look for aliens, Professor! Or life on other planets.'' His hand was up and Adi was waving it enthusiastically. ALIENS, YO! HE WANTED TO MEET AN ALIEN! "Is there an alien in the box?'' He was hoping to catch the Professor off guard.

Finger pointing AND applause? Lux liked this. YES.

Beaming, she listened as the rest of her classmates gave their answers and got feedback. Then it was time for more note taking. Lux made sure to record everything that was written on the board though she was still curious about what was inside the box. What was he checking on repeatedly?

UGH, SHE WAS DYING TO KNOW.

At the next question, she raised her hand. "I think that there are a few reasons why people explore space. It's also done to learn more about stars, planets, and moons!" There were probably other reasons on top of that, but Lux liked to learn about those three things.

Ooohh...aliens...their answers had a great point. Too bad muggles didn't know much about other worldly magical beings that were living under their noses right now. They wouldn't have to go as far as outerspace to figure things out. His adoptive muggle parents knew of course, of their existence but they weren't allowed to share them with anyone. They wouldn't believe them anyway which kind of sad now that he thought about it.

He raised his hands,"I think it encourages people to reach beyond their potential and that dreams can come true, probably help more young people like us be interested in science, technology and engineering...the sky's the limit like they all say."

Angel was totally looking at her sister, after all they were muggleborn and in the summer they spent loads of time on the family computer, and she was trying to get her parents to get her own laptop and here was AJ not knowing the difference if their parents were here then they would be laughing instead she just looked at her sister before shaking her head.

Angel then turned back to the Professor and raised her hand as she heard the question. "Professor I don't think that is true, we also explore place, like star trek says." Angel tried to think about what it was. "To boldly go were no one has gone before." Angel decided to explain. "There are loads of unexploded planets out there and one day they will hope to get to them all to see what they are like and if there are any more that could have life on them."

So... so it WAS food? Yes? It wasn't cardboard, but actual food? Okay.

"Sooooo... can I hav-" Oh, but... OH. Pointing. Pointing was happening. Not accusatory pointing or anything either, like last lesson. The professor wasn't going red in rage, there was not a vein pulsing in his forehead. This was good pointing. Pointing of jubilation. Toby nodded once and repeated the professor when he spoke. "Airtight."

Now, about those raisins? Could he-... oh, no. Okay. Moving on then.

Toby copied down the stuff from the board, adding 'AIRTIGHT' in the section under 'Tupperware' because Airey had got all excited about it MULTIPLE times so it was probably a good one to have in that section. He even underlined it a few times. Then turned those underlines into a series of boxes around the word. AIRTIGHT BOXES. Now he'd remember it for sure. Maybe.

Then he raised his hand.

"We go to space 'cause it's FUN and we don't want to just stay stuck in one place so we MOOOOOVE-" #moo "-out there to see what's up. Like if I see something interesting, I go take a look at it. And the sky is interesting, so people want to go take a look at that, y'know? It's frustrating when you can SEE a thing and want to find out more about it by checking it out but you CAN'T. But we CAN now. But mostly we go 'cause it's fun and stuff."

Toby thought he might enjoy space.

"Field trip? Is that what's in the box? To space?"

Maybe?

Airey gave the seventh year an approving nod of the head. "Want. Very interesting choice of word, Miss Guidry. Very interesting indeed."

She also wanted to add that we search for other life forms, but she figured she should save some answers for others.

"Excellent observation, Miss Addison," he saluted. "The links between Earth's environmental studies and space exploration are quite broad , from the use of satellite technology to support environmental monitoring and habitat protection to the study of extreme environments on Earth to prepare for the exploration of other planets."

"Brilliantly put, Miss Wojack. Take 5 points."

And some MORE pointing.

"The thrill, adventure, very interesting, Miss Valentine," he grinned. "Take 3 points."

So we aren't so alone in the universe?"

What's in the booooooox???
He nodded some more, eagerly, at the first year. "Yes, the potential of alien life. Very good." Potential. That would soon be a buzz word in the classroom.

"None of your business." Wink.

Airey nodded and tapped his nose at the Hufflepuff's answer. No need to repeat what was just said to Mr. McWitty.

"If there is, it is none of your concern." Heh.

Professor Trollsteed in the house, yo.

He nodded eagerly at Miss Carrington, wishing she had happened to touch on some buzz words as she spoke, but alas. "Very good, Miss Carrington."

Alright, so, the 'dreams come true' bit was a tad too wishy washy and illogically cheesy for him, but the Hufflepuff had hit on a buzz word. A few, really, and THAT was exciting.

"Stellar, Mr. Nicolei. Take 3 points."

Angel tried to think about what it was. "To boldly go were no one has gone before." Angel decided to explain. "There are loads of unexploded planets out there and one day they will hope to get to them all to see what they are like and if there are any more that could have life on them."
Well...yes...that was a good point. He supposed. It was true that there were, er, plenty of 'unexploded' planets out there...

Nodding and smiling at the Gryffindor, he threw her a simply thumbs up before moving along to the next raised hand.

Toby thought he might enjoy space.

"Field trip? Is that what's in the box? To space?"

Maybe?
Alright. Alriiiiiiiiight. Unable to contain his excitement any more after all the stellar answers, Mr. Toby provided the last bit of space dust needed to tip the scale and he leaped on to the seventh year's desk. "If I see something interesting, I go take a look at it," he chanted slowly, flapping his arms up and down slowly. "If I see something interesting, I go take a look at it. If I see something interesting, I go take a look at it. IF I SEE SOMETHING, I GO TAKE A LOOK AT IT! 5 POINTS, MR. TOBY!"

Still standing on the Hufflepuff's desk, limberly avoiding the young man's inkwell and notes, he waved his wand at the board to erase the list of space exploration enhancements but did not add anything new just yet.

"I agree with all of you that no, that is not the only reason we go to explore space. And while many of you brought up very good factual points, I believe that there is something much more profound is at work when one attempts to justify space exploration. Something that I think is living inside each and every one of you," he said, moving his pointed finger around the classroom to literally point at each student. Pointing towards Mr. Toby proved to be a bit awkward, however.

"It is no secret that many believe that space exploration is too expensive and too dangerous, that those funds would be put to better use examining and studying things right here on Earth. But the thing is, I believe there is a need. A need that many of you alluded to in your answers. A need that lives inside every human being. A need that I see in each of your eyes right now as I speak."

Pleased with himself, he threw a quick salute at Mr. Toby before leaping of his desk an approaching the box once more. The same yellow box that had been floating there the entire lesson, taunting students with its mysterious contents.

"How many of you have noticed that I have a box up here with me?" he chuckled. Rhetorical question. No need to answer it. Or the series of questions he was about to list off in rapid succession. "Why did noticed the box? Was it the color? The question mark on front? How about your own curiosity? How many of you were just curious in general about what might be in the box, regardless of the color or design?"

He paused here to take another peek inside, grinning, and then continued.

"Last term, more and more NEW and UNEXPLORED secret passageways and rooms revealed themselves to us. Some this term as well. How many of you went exploring these new places? Went looking for even more secrets within Hogwarts? What if I told you Hogwarts had a hidden swimming pool? Would you go looking for it? What if I told you a dangerous creature lived in this hidden swimming pool? Would you still want to go looking for it?" His blue eyes flickered around the semi circle of desks, watching students' facial expressions and reactions as he spoke. Waiting eagerly for the wheels in their heads to turn and even switch into overdrive. He turned his attention towards the box, tapping it firmly with the palm of his hand. "I think that each of you has a little bit of an explorer in you. A part of you that needs to know like countless other examples in human history." He paused here to make those very words appear on the board in large letters.

Quote:
NEED TO KNOW
"Each one of you have expressed an interest in knowing what is in my box. Why? Why has it become so important to you to know what is hidden in my box? I think that my box is a lot like outer space. Would anyone care to venture a guess as to why?"

OOC: this lesson will continue in 16 - 20 hours from the time of this post <3

Apologies, sort of, for the length of this man's ramblings. He is quite excited

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Awh! Airey was not to be caught of guard apparently. No worries. Adi could continue to STAREEE at the box with hopes of seeing through the material. Too bad he didn't have X-Ray vision.

Ohh, jumping on Toby's desk! Hehe. Adi liked it when The Suit jumped on desks. Yup. And they got FIVE points to Puffer House! Wheee! Go, Toby! Okay, time to calm down and listen. Gosh, so many words out of this man's mouth. The sixth year tried to take it all in.

Hmph. OF COURSE they noticed the box. Flamsteed was just having the time of his life with teasing them using the object, wasn't he? LOL. Well, sooner or later he would just have to reveal the contents. And yesh, Adi would STILL want to go exploring if something dangerous lurked. Duuuuuh. Why live safely all the time? Life wasn't so much fun that way.

Adi raised his hand to answer the latter questions. "Curiosity. Everyone is curious and that curiosity is tugging at them.'' Er, he couldn't explain it exactly but he was doing his best here. THEY JUST WANTED TO KNOW, OKAY?! "The box is like outer space because no one knows what's in there just like how no one knows what's in outer space. They want to explore to find those answers.'' He paused. "I'm thinking there's nothing in that box.'' Just saying. Plus, it was his way of trying to get an answer out of the man again.

Penelope finished copying down everything that was written on the board and looked up at Professor Flamsteed. Were they going to find out what, if anything, was inside the box? Why had everyone noticed the box and wanted to know what was inside of it? "Curiosity about everything." Questions and learning were good. Next questions.

The secret passages in Hogwarts really were a lot like space. Now for more questions, this time using a hidden swimming pool as an example. "I might be curious, but I don't think I would go looking for anything that I knew was dangerous." At least not without a professor. If she ever heard about a secret place with something dangerous she would wait to see if any Gryffindors disappeared. Now what had they been discussing?

"Space is like your box and all the unexplored parts of Hogwarts because we don't know everything about what is there, but we are curious about it and want to find out everything about everything that we don't already know." They knew so little about everything in space. All of the planets and stars and things that had been more closely studied were relatively close to Earth. There were so many parts of space that were just waiting to be discovered and explored.

Professor Airey had this uncanny ability to get Kate REALLY excited about Astronomy and REALLY hyper about classroom activities all at the same time. Sometimes, she found herself just wanted to get up and DANCE, even though she never, EVER would. Nevertheless, he suddenly had her all excited about a trip to outer space, even though she'd never once thought about going.

Her hand darted enthusiastically into the air. "Because we always want to know more about the unknown!" she said. "We know what's here on Earth, because we're here, too. Space is a big, open area of darkness and far away bodies that we can't just look out and see. It's the same with that box." Her blue eyes zoomed in on the box, and she suddenly wanted to just tear it open like a Christmas present. "We're so interested in it, because we don't know what it is, and it also has a big question mark on it, which makes us wonder about it."

What do we want to do?! OPEN THE BOX! When do we want to do it?! RIGHT NOW!!!
