The Arithmancy classroom is ready to be filled on a sunny February morning. Frost particles stubbornly cling to the windows, refusing to be melted by the weak winter sunlight. A large space has been cleared at the back of the classroom, but there does not seem to be any indication as to the reason. Perhaps Tanner is simply in the mood for early spring cleaning, but the abundance of cobwebs makes this unlikely. Plenty of desks are crammed, rather more tightly than usual, into the front of the room to accommodate the extra students from Professor Moxley's class. You don't mind being close to your neighbor, right?
Ahhhhh, okay. So... Tanner was being all mysterious about it. Well, that was fine, 'cause Toby knew that sooner or later the answer to his question would be revealed. He simply smiled and nodded his head. Cool. He'd wait.
Aaaaaand soon enough, they were getting right to it! Well... almost.
If it... represented a place... what would it... uh... what?
Toby blinked at the professor a few times. What... was she...? Huh. Well that was a weird question. The seventh year frowned thoughtfully and looked at the board, and then at his parchment, and back again, trying to think of a place that that big ol' number made him think of. Uhhhhh...
The first thing that came to mind was, perhaps, completely obvious. He raised his hand and offered his answer. "Quidditch stadium. 'Cause it's a huge number, and stadiums have a huge number of seats. Maybe not..." There was a moment in which it looked like Toby was actually going to have a try at saying the number out loud, but... no... not a clue. "... not that many seats, but that's just what the number makes me think of, y'know?" Naturally. Sorta... one track mind over here.
Thinking about it... would a Quidditch stadium with 441,315,565,100 seats possibly be bigger than the ENTIRE PLANET? That would be so cool.

SPOILER!!: Professor
Now came the fun part. "This number, which reduces to 8, has several meanings, the most commonly used of which are authority, success, and material wealth. Here's a thought exercise for you: if this number were to represent a place, what type of place would you guess? Creative answers accepted!" she said enthusiastically.
Ian had just finished working on the problem when the professor began to speak again. She posted the answer, which he was pleased to have gotten correct. And then she asked a question. He thought for a moment and raised his hand. "Professor. My dad told me about this place in Asia where old men spend all their time in meditation and learning how to fight. I think he called them Sowling monkeys. Said they were perfect at mastering themselves. And could deliver a right proper beating if they need to but he told me they don't like to fight."
Well, of course she'd been right. It was a simple calculation, and it would've been embarrassing if she'd messed it up, really. And it was mega cute, the way Zander got picked on to help another kid. That basically meant he was an all-star student, right? He got big smiles.
But now the question was... WHAT WERE THE NUMBERS FOR? She squinted at Tanner and her vagueness - the number represented a place, not an amount of money? What kind of place, was the question, and Sophie considered it for a little while. Success... authority... wealth...
And her hand raised. "Well... when I think of success 'n wealth 'n authority, there's no higher than--..." she paused. She was going to say the Ministry of Magic, but then she caught sight of Moxley - this was partly Muggle Studies class, wasn't it? So... maybe she needed to try for something more... Muggle. "Than... the Queen? The Royal Family, maybe, or like... Buckingham Palace or something, 'cause that's all wealth and success and authority and stuff."

Apparently Professor Tanner had believed his question to be directed at her. "Um...okay," Benny said responding to her despite the mix-up so he wasn't rude.He raised a slight eyebrow as Adi answered to the negative at first about him taking the seat beside him. Thankfully he didn't react any further for his friend proved to be just kinding with his remark. "Funny..." he mused with a small smirk. They sure were getting back to normal.
------and then class was beginning.
Reducing could be tricky and Benny was always having to double check to make sure he either didn't miss anything or didn't go too far with what they were doing. With the number presented, the Gryffindor copied it cautiously into his notes before proceeding to follow what he knew about reduction. He didn't have the excuse of being one of those students that didn't take arithmacy.
Looking up at the board, the sixth year saw that he was right with his math. The 8 as the final number, matching what Tanner had revealed to them. As for the musing out before them, there was one place that stood out to Benny so he figured he might as well mention it. "A bank...like Gringotts." Wealth....business...success...all seemed to fit.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Oh no, the Professor was walking in his direction. Had she noticed that he had no idea what he was supposed to be doing? He did not like that… “Ehm…” he said , getting a bit embarrassed. At least she was not mad. “Yes..i think so…I have no idea what I’m doing…” he answered without looking at her but at his paper. Merlin’s beard this was embarrassing. “Hyland, Professor.. Yoongi Hyland”
Huh? Who was PSSSSSTing at him? Yoongi looked after the Professor gave the approval of someone helping him out and realised it was AJ. “Ah, thanks!” He let her see his notes, biting his lower lip as she peered at it and listened to what she was explaining.
“So…like this?” he said and began to write down on his parchment again

He looked uncertainly at AJ before continuing… counting on his fingers the whole time. It was slow, but he was getting there.

And class was continuing. Yoongi was glad that this time it wasn’t them having to calculate anything right now. Could the Muggle Studies bit come now? “Minister’s office?” he piped in.
Norah beamed at Professor Tanner's praise, squishing her cheeks between her palms because she didn't even know what to SAY to that. A professor noticed her progress! They really did! It was practically a MIRACLE. She found it hard to keep the grin off her face because apparently it just wanted to stick there, which was really fine with her. Maybe it was even the goal. Who knew that numbers and maths and things could actually result in something that wasn't awful.
Oh. A place? That was easy peasy, she'd thought about that one already. The fourth year shot a hand up in the air and waved it around, so ready to be two for two in this class they'd got going. She could see it now, Norah Kittredge QUEEN of Arithmancy. "A bank!" Geddit? Numbers? Business? Wealth? It totally worked. Plus banks were cool when they were like gringotts because goblins had the best faces ever.

Kate looked from her work to the professor then back again. So she'd gotten the correct answer?! AWESOME! She didn't have to re-do anything, and she'd really surprised herself on thinking this one through and figuring out what to do without any help. Smiling to herself, she put a big check mark next to work just BECAUSE.
She looked down at the meaning of the number eight, which she'd copied from the textbook. If the meaning was a place, what place would it be? A bank was her first answer, but since that had already been said, she opted for some place else. "What about the Ministry of Magic?" she asked, her hand raised. Her mom worked there, and there seemed to be a lot of authority figures and successful people there. Material wealth? Hmm. Maybe not so much.

So this was officially the best day because it was two uber easy lessons combined into ONE. Not to mention the two classes her aunt taught so she was on total cloud nine here. Naturally, despite the excessive number of digits in the number Tanner had posted, Tia was well aware of how to reduce it accurately.
Carefully penning her notes, she worked it out quietly for a moment or two:
She underlined and circled her final answer and then Tanner proposed another question again. What sort of place might this number represent? The first thing that popped into her head was Hogwarts, but she felt the need to go more grandiose. Hogwarts was too simple. Too plain.
"I think it could potential represent the idea of a place, as in one where the living is easy. Perhaps a tropical private island, or a five-star resort, a castle in the mountains, ..." Tia began after raising her hand. "It's luxurious, yet completely relaxed."

OH THANK MERLIN they were going to be doing something else. Good one, Professor. Lux was much better at the good old reduction method. Arithmancy didn't get much simpler than that. The number on the board was rather long, but it was nothing she couldn't handle.
Opening her notebook, she began working on the problem:
Oh. And looked like Eden was lost. "I can help you if you want." She was much better at Arithmancy now.

And Eden was her first customer, by the sound of it. "Coming, Miss McGee," she said from the opposite side of the room. It took her a while to wend her way over, given the close proximity of the desks. By the time she had arrived, someone had beaten her to the punch. "Yes, Miss Carrington.." Tiara scanned her work. "You are more than able to assist. Thank you for offering!" She turned to Eden. "You're in good hands, don't worry," she said with a smile. Then Tiara moved on to others, but of course she could come back if necessary.
Here was the Gryffindor that had offered to help clean up, but she didn't know his name. Clearly he needed help, but that made sense because he didn't take the course. "It looks like you could use a crash course in our reduction method, Mister..?" Help a lady out with a name, here.
Eden glanced over at Lux. "Okay..okay. Good. I..I might need a lot of help," she whispered to the Hufflepuff. GOSH WHY WASN'T EDEN'S BRAIN WORKING RIGHT NOW.
It was annoying.
But with Lux's help...and watching other people, Eden figured out how to do this.....reduction thing. Right. Yeah. Totally and completely easy, mhmm.
Well...so...I have to do...4 + 4 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 5 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 1 + 0 + 0....which....equals 35. She scribbled all of this down as she did it. And then 3+5 is.... 8. Eden was glad this was EASY math, at least, Merlin.

So how were her budding arithmancers doing? Time to find out. First up was one of her own flock. "Well done, you even found the meaning."
Very spaced, this work was. But also very correct, so really it didn't matter much. "An accurate summary of the characteristics, Miss Brown," she commented.
Interesting. Weak eyes, perhaps? No matter, he'd been very helpful, so she wouldn't comment further. "Thank you, Mister Rehman."
~~~~~
Aditya had chosen to break up the number into smaller chunks, including reducing one of the smaller numbers before combining them together. "Interesting method, correct answer. I wonder if that will always work..? I would certainly have to look into that to prove it." These students were always stretching her. Whoever thought 'teachers teach and students learn' had definitely never taught before.
Upon hearing a question, Tanner turned to find the source of curiosity. Ah, she should have known! Smiling, she said, "Not random! But I'm not giving it away just yet!" she finished, giving the young man a small wink. She didn't want to discourage his curiosity.
"Mhm.. yes.." she muttered as she looked over Zhenya's parchment. "Excellent, you've earned yourself a short break!"
"Good work, Miss Guidry," Tiara said, looking over the girl's shoulder. "Just sit tight for a few moments until we're ready to move on."
What did Zeke Rogers have for her today? "Correct work, correct meaning. Hold on to that until we're ready to start doing something with it."
Just by the look in AJ's eyes, she could automatically tell that the girl was tired. "Getting enough sleep, Miss Valentine?" she asked whilst looking over her work. "It does not appear to have impacted your work, thankfully. Get a nap in before lunch today is my suggestion."
Back to the Dream Team. Zander had finished now, and she wanted to double check his work agreed with the rest of the group. "Indeed, correct," she said to him after verifying.
Oh good, AJ was offering to help. She loved how willing the students were to help each other. That would make for productive citizenship later in life. "Yes please, Miss Valentine. Many thanks," she finished, inclining her head towards the girl.
Well, this Hufflepuff was definitely on to something. "You have the right idea, now you simply need to complete the calculation! Break it up into smaller chunks if it seems too large and overwhelming." Good advice for many tasks in life, actually.
SPOILER!!: Meredith and Co.
And here came more assistance now. "Thank you, Professor Moxley and Prefect Adair. Extra students require extra assistants!" Good, that situation was taken care of, then. Time to focus on others.
"Ah, yes. Well done, Miss Kittredge," she said approvingly. "You are really coming along in this subject quite nicely!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tiara took one last look out into the corridor. Not seeing anyone, she decided it was time to start the actual new material. "Back up front if you would, please." A few moments' pause was enough to allow her to speak again. "If you don't take Arithmancy, do not worry about the reducing, the others have helped you out." She flicked her wand at the board, making the work and answer appear, along with the textbook's meaning.
Now came the fun part. "This number, which reduces to 8, has several meanings, the most commonly used of which are authority, success, and material wealth. Here's a thought exercise for you: if this number were to represent a place, what type of place would you guess? Creative answers accepted!" she said enthusiastically.
OOC: Completely off the wall answers are fine! If you need to finish your calculations, that's also alright. We'll move on in 16-20 hours depending on when I get up in the morning.
Eden raised her hand, after seeing what 8 meant and stuff..."Well...success and whatnot...a cooperation of some sort..and since this is combined with muggle studies--a muggle corporation of some sort."
Was that a good answer? No. Eden was feeling.....eehhh about things.

Moving closer to Eden, Lux smiled. She liked helping her friends and hopefully she would do a good job because math could be confusing. At least the first part was proving to be easy.
Yep.
Looked like Eden had it in the bag. She was going to stay here though because she was comfortable. Maybe she and Eden could help each other out later if the math got really hard. They could be an awesome team! BEAM.
At Professor Tanner's question, Lux raised her hand. "I would that it would represent a business of some sort...like a real proper one with CEOs and stuff."
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Blink, blink.
Interesting method? What did Tanner mean by that? Adi tilted his head at his Professor. "But this is always how I do my reduction calculations.'' He frowned at his parchment, taking a while to figure out what was meant by Tanner's statement. OH! She meant his reduction of 16 when he could simply have added the 16,9,9 and 1 then reduce it! He looked back at the woman. "I see what you mean. I really have no idea. Maybe we can try this method out sometime with random numbers to see if it works all the time.''
...................
Annnnd back to the class. Adi was totally done peeking into Benny's parchment, by the way. He had to make sure the bestie was doing things right. Yep, everything had seemed a-okay there. As for an answer to that question, he had one! Hand up, Adi volunteered, "A law firm!'' Hehe. Lawyers had all of those things going for them. Or maybe most.

Ian copied the equation the way Zander had.
Ian sighed a breath of relief. " I guess that I was just struggling to add those numbers as they were grouped in one long equation. I suppose my brain doesn't keep track of them as well as it should and so your help is greatly appreciated. As I remember it, the final result should be 8. I'm so sorry you had to waste your time helping me out. I'm sure that you must thinking I'm a blooming idiot who doesn't know how to add simple numbers." Ian was relieved, but also a bit embarrassed that he couldn't handle simple addition.
Zander watched the whole time while Ian calculated the rest of the small chunks of numbers. Okay, he watched almost the whole time, but only because he had to steal glances over to his Arithmancy team that was sitting all the way over THERE. "Honestly, don't mention it." Aside from the fact that he had to do more work and climb around all those tables just to get here, "it's not a big deal." He tried his best to assure the Hufflepuff kid as he stood up. "Hope that sort of made things easier?" Zander awkwardly mussed his hair before flashing a huge smile over at Professor Moxley ('cause that had to earn him some brownie points, right?) and making his way back to his seat next to Soph.
As for the question.
It had Zander thinking. Of course all of the other answers were great. Buuuut they were in a JOINT lesson. Which meant the number had to mean something muggle. Or at least that was Zander's train of thought, anyways. "The muggle population of Europe?" It was a stretch

Zhenya had looked up to the front, where Professor Tanner was addressing them again. What would the number 8 represent if it were a place? Zhenya had a thought about that. She quite liked the number 8. It had two circles, one could be bigger than the other, or they could be the same size, and they were almost like a forever, continuing, never breaking.
What did that represent? Well it was obvious, but she didn't want to spill too much information out at once, so she would break it down to a simple answer. She raised her hand and waited for Professor Tanner to call upon her, "To me, the number 8 would represent the place you call home. I think the number 8 is an infinite number, you could keep drawing over it without your quill leaving the page, so to me, I could keep going on in life, but my home will always be my home." Did that make sense? She wasn't sure the comparison made much sense but it did in her head.

He was correct! Of course he was correct! Ahem... yeah, totally normal for him. Not. He was pleased he started off the lesson on a good note, it could either get better, or just go downhill from here. He was hoping for better.
Already he was curious about this lesson. Well, the arithmancy portion of it at least. If the number was a place? What place would it be?
Authority? Success? Material wealth? ...........
....
But then there were all those OTHER things too. Mastery and fluidity and other things.
Hand up, Zeke voiced the most OBVIOUS conclusion that came to him. And by obvious, it was obvious to him. "Hogwarts, Professor. Cause you Professor's give us rules and there are consequences to breaking them, it's a place where we learn and become better at things and successful, we're in a super old castle with pretty portraits and shiny things..." not to mention the house point hour glasses held GEMS and STONES and things. So yeah. It was obvious to him. So so SO obvious.

Janelle had gotten the problem right. That resulted in a sigh of relief, but before she could enjoy her victory.......a question was asked. What place might the number 8 represent? Janelle thought about the meanings of the number and quickly raised her hand. Not quickly enough apparently because the first two answers that popped into her head were taken. So much for the Ministry of Magic and Gringotts. Now she had to really think about the answer......and fast.
Janelle should have thought of putting her hand down while she re-thought her answer. As she was trying to come up with a back-up answer, she was called on. "Um.......how about........the home of a self-made millionaire. They must have had some success to get all of that money and........they probably have a lot of material wealth-y things in their home. And if you're a millionaire, you probably have authority over something or someone.......right?" Wow, talking about grasping at straws. Well, it was an answer.

No accent. Okay. She knew who this was. Probably. Most likely. Anyways, what she said must not have been a hot confusing mess because he was scribbling on his parchment. This was promising.
"Perfect." He got a thumbs up and a smile. "Oh, and anytime." It was really cool when she got to help somebody else because for the longest time she was always the one who was needing the help, not giving it.
Slowly but surely, she was starting to wake up. It was a process. Whoops. Even the professor had noticed it. "Yes, ma'am." A nap sounded wonderful, but she knew that would never happen. Once AJ Valentine was going... well, there was no stopping her.
Hmmm... creative answers were appreciated. That was a relief because that was pretty much all she had to offer. This lion was an out of the box thinker to say the least.
Her hand shot into the air. See? She was awake. "I think it would be a taco stand." She had a point, promise! "Loads of money in the taco business and if you get to sling taco meat all day... well, I don't what could be more successful than that." You know what? She was going to have a taco stand right outside of her vet office. She couldn't wait to tell Adi.

”Is this right?he asked.
And class was continuing. Yoongi was glad that this time it wasn’t them having to calculate anything right now. Could the Muggle Studies bit come now? “Minister’s office?” he piped in.
Yoongi Hyland. She would try to remember that. "A good guess, Mister Hyland!" He hadn't excelled at the first part of the lesson, so it was good that he had done well on this next portion.

Another guess for a bank. "Indeed, it doesn't have to be Gringotts, it could be a muggle establishment." This was a joint Muggle Studies lesson, after all.

It was likely a bank, she decided.
That did fit the bill, yes. "Good thought, Miss Addison."

That was a unique take. "Interesting thought process. I would have to say that the older you get, the more you will realize that success and wealth do not automatically bring relaxation." But that was beside the point. "Good work."

Eden raised her hand, after seeing what 8 meant and stuff..."Well...success and whatnot...a cooperation of some sort..and since this is combined with muggle studies--a muggle corporation of some sort."
Was that a good answer? No. Eden was feeling.....eehhh about things.
Tiara nodded. "Good idea, good connection," she said, giving the girl a smile of reassurance.

Tiara liked free form questions such as this one because she enjoyed seeing how students' brains worked. For instance, Lux thinking that a small business wouldn't be considered 'success.' That was probably how Tiara had felt at that age as well. "Indeed, a large business fits the bill." Though it wasn't as heavy on the 'authority' aspect.

Wow. This class was creative, and Tiara loved it. Hardly anyone had come up with the same answers. "I had not thought of that one, Mister Rehman. Good thinking."

It sounded like someone needed a little bit of social studies knowledge. "I think that would be far too large for Europe, unfortunately." Or the rest of the world, for that matter. "But nice try!"

Now that was creative. It didn't follow the textbook, but she hadn't said they needed to. "What a thoughtful answer, Miss Burton. I like your style." She gave the girl a smile in appreciation.

Authority?
What did Mister Rogers have for them? "I wondered if someone would say Hogwarts! I think it fits the bill quite well."

It seemed like most students were focusing on the money aspect the most, which wasn't a problem. "Right," she said in response to the trailing question at the end. "Good thinking."

She seemed more awake already! Tiara chuckled. "Miss Valentine, I can honestly say that is the most creative answer I will get all week in lessons. Take two points!" Because even though she was way off, she had made Tiara laugh, and that was worth points any day.

And stuff. Really good answer there, Soph.
Then came another member of the Dream Team. And her answer lived up to the title. "That is actually really truly fantastic guessing, Miss Brown." She pointed once more at the board and the number morphed, separating out into different components.
Quote:
441,315,565,100 --> +44 131 556 5100
"Many of you may recognize this as a muggle telephone number. In fact, it is the phone number for the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which just so happens to be the official residence of the muggle king or queen in Scotland." In other words, basically the Buckingham Palace for when they were in Scotland. "I think Miss Brown deserves 5 points for hitting the nail on the head!"
So, onto the new material. "Telephone numbers and house numbers can be used in Arithmancy, believe it or not. The main idea is that if the number reduces down to something bad, you may want to reconsider buying the house or perhaps taking a different telephone number." Tiara walked to the board and wrote by hand 'Karmic Numbers.'
"If you look in chapter three, you'll see a list of karmic numbers, sometimes referred to as karmic debts. They are 10, 13, 14, 16, and 19. These are what you are trying to avoid at any point in your reduction." Or any type of debt.. but that was also beside the point. "For instance..."
Quote:
201-2524
2+0+1+2+5+2+4 = 16 --> 1+6 = 7
"Though the final reduction is indeed seven, not a karmic number, the reduction contains 16, which is. Notice I did not include country codes, area codes, or similar, just the local number. So, your task! I am providing a list of just phone numbers, since that is what you are studying in Muggle Studies. They are all for famous muggle establishments just to make it interesting. Reduce them down, and tell me what you think about using that number."
Quote:
+44 20 7323 8299, use 7323 8299
+1 202 456 1111, use 456 1111
+61 2 9250 7111, use 9250 7111
OOC: Apologies if I messed up the local part of the phone number for your country!
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Whaa! Way to go Sophie! Adi now watched the numbers shift and do their thing so that a phone number formed. Yep, he could see it was a phone number now though he indeed found it difficult to believe phone numbers were used in the subject. He wondered if he should keep the information about phone numbers for reference when he was buying his future house. Hehe.
Alrightey. So Karmic Numbers must be avoided at ALL times. The sixth year got that. He eyed the numbers on the board. For famous buildings, he sure didn't recognise any. Oh, well. That's why there were phone books... to look up numbers. But onto more calculations!
SPOILER!!: Adi's Work cont'd
7323 8299
7+3+2+3+8+2+9+9= 43= 4+3= 7
456 1111
4+5+6+1+1+1+1= 19= 1+9=10= 1+0= 1
9250 7111
9+2+5+0+7+1+1+1= 26= 2+6= 8
After he was done with the calculations, the bespectacled student raised his hand. "The building that has the second number should change it pronto because there are two Karmic numbers when calculated, 19 and 10. Does that mean that the karmic debt from that number is doubled, Professor? The other two numbers don't seem to have any debts attached though so I reckon those are safe.'' Interesting. This was all so interesting!
<--- Random | Funfetti | Lima Bean | Slytherpuff | PURPLE | Hoarder of pens | ALWAYS Severus
And THAT ladies and gentlemen was how you got points just for being awesome. AJ was beaming. "Thanks, professor." Tanner just got some cool points in AJ's book. Did she know? Now she was having a hard time not thinking about tacos. It was a daily struggle for her.
What about bad karma? Ohhh... interesting. The brunette never would have thought twice about phone numbers and what it could mean. This sounded like a load of rubbish and very Divination-y, buuuut who cares... it was interesting.
Time for more reduction. AJ eyed her lion buddy that needed help earlier. Was he okay? Because she could still help, just sayin'. Right. On to make some scribbles on her paper. First she jotted down all of the numbers.
SPOILER!!: work
7+3+2+3+8+2+9+9=43
4+3=7
4+5+6+1+1+1+1=19
1+9=10
1+0=1
9+2+5+0+7+1+1+1=26
2+6=8
Interesting. VERY interesting. The second number they used was all kinds of bad. Adi had a good question. AJ was curious what that could mean too... you know IF she bought in to all of this stuff.
dream until your • dreams come true ~ Human pygmy puff
Janelle listened as Professor Tanner explained the correct answer to the previous question. Well, she had certainly missed that one. Annnd she certainly hadn't guessed that the number they were reducing was a phone number.
Janelle copied down the new phone numbers and wondered what they belonged to. They'd probably find out after they finished working. She'd just have to wait. In the meantime, the numbers weren't going to reduce themselves so she started adding them together.
SPOILER!!: Janelle's work
Numbers to avoid: 10, 13, 14, 16,19
1.) 7323 8299
7+3+2+3+8+2+9+9=43
4+3=7
This number is OK to use.
2.) 456 1111
4+5+6+1+1+1+1=19
1+9=10
1+0=1
This number is not good. It has two karmic debt number, 19 and 10. It should be avoided if possible.
3.) 9250 7111
9+2+5+0+7+1+1+1=26
2+6=8
This number is OK to use.
With her calculations complete, Janelle looked them over. Two numbers got a thumbs up and one got a big thumbs down. Janelle wasn't sure whether she was supposed to write down her opinion or give her thoughts out loud. She decided to write her answer so she went back to her notes and added a brief yay or nay.
Janelle noticed the area code on the second and bad karmic number. She knew that area code because she had family with that same area code. Knowing that 202 was the area code for Washington, DC, she wondered if that might be the number for the White House. Whoever had that number could sure use a more positive one.

Toby gave Soph a casual nudge with his elbow when she went ahead and earned those five points for being a nerd. He smiled, but kept his eyes up ahead on Tanner. Yeah, he didn't want to risk being reprimanded for PDA again, because he wasn't exactly sure where the line was.
Okay, yes, moving on. Phone numbers. Right. Toby copied all those ones down from the board and got to work with reducing those ones as well.
+1 202 456 1111, use 456 1111
456 1111
4 + 5 + 6 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 19
1 + 9 = 10
1 + 0 = 1
= 1
TWO karmic debt number things, so I guess it's probably not a good number? Which is sad. It can't help it.
Finally, after spending a little longer on his work than usual, Toby looked up and rubbed at his eyes. He'd not noticed how close he'd been leaning to the parchment, frowning and squinting in concentration, until he'd sat up again, and now his eyes hurt as well as his brain. Not that the reducing thing was that hard (well... kinda... he'd managed to catch a few mistakes), but because he'd been puzzling over just how a phone number could be bad. Surely the 'bad' ones felt left out. It was kind of a judgemental practice and saddened his delicate little Hufflepuff heart. But he wasn't gonna say that, of course, so just sat in silence, yep. His thoughts on the numbers were on his parchment.

Tanner say WHAT? She was... right? Well, SORT OF right? Wrong place, but correct idea behind it, AND she was getting extra points for being a solid guesser?
Sometimes, life was beautiful, and for Sophie Brown, there was nothing more beautiful than being surrounded by her best friends and getting points for sheer dumb luck. Life was a dream, and she beamed at Tobes and his nudge with the utmost joy and pride.
New material was being taught, and Sophie squinted at the karmic debts in chapter three of her textbook. So they were... bad things? And if one got those numbers in the equation, the little description beside the number was what one had to do to undo the bad karma? That was an interesting concept, if she was understanding it correctly, and when they were set to reduce a new set of numbers, Sophie got straight to work.
Not bothering with re-checking her work once again, Soph set her writing utensil down and leaned back in her chair, stretching her arms up and behind her as Adi answered the professor's question for them, then gave a few pats on the shoulder nearest to her of both of her boys. Hi, best friends. Hi.
And then she settled back into her chair and drummed her fingers lightly on her desk, looking entirely bored with everything. Would they do something fun soon?

Oh. It was a telephone number. Lux was trying her hardest to concentrate on what Professor Tanner was telling them, but her mind kept drifting to tacos. It was AJ's fault for bringing them up.
Karmic Debts were something she had heard about but hadn't studied too much; she DID know that they weren't good though. Lux made a note of which numbers to avoid and hoped that she would remember it. Never too early to start preparing for NEWTs.
Looking at the board she copied down the numbers and worked on reducing them:
Finished, she looked over her work to make sure that there were no mistakes. Glancing over at Eden, she hoped that she was doing okay with it, but of course she would offer more assistance if needed.
Hiss!Roar!Growl!Caw! | Hermione's Double | The Little Three | Alecate
They had to reduce all of them?! Kate didn't mean to sound so UN-Ravenclaw, but she never looked forward to do any type of calculation. At least this was something new (to her) in Arithmancy. She had never thought of telephone numbers being affiliated with purchasing a house. She guessed that numbers were important no matter what the numbers were there for.
She copied down the three phone numbers and began her calculations.
½ EagleBrain ♥ Creeperdoodle ♥ Raven Dor ♥ Berry ♥ ½ Team House Elf
Yes, good, Hogwarts WAS an obvious answer... and though that had initially pleased him, now he was disappointed. He should stop with the OBVIOUS answers and think harder!!!!!! But without fretting too much, Zeke continued taking notes as the identity of the numbers were explained. Phone numbers, of course. OF COURSE.
And it wasn't surprising that Sophie got points for getting it right. She was a know it all for real. FOR REALZ.
But after copying down the numbers they were now working with, Zeke set about reducing them down.
Conclusion: SMART place. Research centre? University? Gallery?
456 1111
4+5+6+1+1+1+ = 19
1 + 9 = 10
1+0 = 1
- double karmic debt with this number, 19 and 10!!!!
19: Reworking karmic abuse of power through learning to show compassion and sacred use of cosmic wisdom for the greater good
10: Renewal rebirth, karmic completion, mastery, beginning again with consciousness
Conclusion: Things keep changing? It's messy. Lots of newness.
9250 7111
9+2+5+0+7+1+1+1 = 26
2+6 = 8
8: Authority, finances, business, success, material wealth, self-mastery, complex thought/reasoning, fluidity, movement
Conclusion: Another BOSS/ROYAL/COMPANY type place that does things and may be specialised and things?
He decided very quickly that it sucked to be the one with the double karmic number thing, because karmic numbers just sounded BAD... even though they weren't, not really.
Hand up, Zeke thought which question to ask first.
"Professor, the second place seems kind of intense, right? Is it?" he started, curious. "I mean the whole abuse of power thing, that sounds intense, but the karmic numbers are like renewing and changing so its like, changing. So it's.... not abusing power anymore?" Where was he going with this? Oh right, CHANGE! "And am I right in thinking a lot of change happens here? The whole rebirthing thing and the beginning again thing with number 10 gave me that idea."
