Arithmancy/Muggle Studies Joint Lesson The Arithmancy classroom is ready to be filled on a sunny February morning. Frost particles stubbornly cling to the windows, refusing to be melted by the weak winter sunlight. A large space has been cleared at the back of the classroom, but there does not seem to be any indication as to the reason. Perhaps Tanner is simply in the mood for early spring cleaning, but the abundance of cobwebs makes this unlikely. Plenty of desks are crammed, rather more tightly than usual, into the front of the room to accommodate the extra students from Professor Moxley's class. You don't mind being close to your neighbor, right? OOC: Class has officially started! Lesson Progression Arithmancy-Task 1 Arithmancy-Question 1 Arithmancy-Task 2 Muggle Studies-Question 1 Muggle Studies-Question 2 Muggle Studies-Mini Task Main Activity! Score Update 1! Score Update 2! End of the lesson! |
This was sure to be an interesting if not completely traumatising lesson. Though it was combining two things he liked: Muggle Studies and Arithmancy, it also filled him with dread. Surely they wouldn't be doing muggle mathematics today. Please. No. PLEASE. NO. Zeke reluctantly entered the classroom, taking in its appearance and all things in the room. So far, there was no sign of muggle math, but he wasn't out of the woods yet. "Morning, Professors," he greeted with a nod before claiming a seat toward the back. He did NOT want to be front and centre for this one. Nope. But what was with this space? And WHY were the house elves allowed to slack off? There were cobwebs EVERYWHERE. Legit, this was a problem. Or were they on purpose? |
Eden wasn't keen on Arithmancy. She didn't take the subject for a reason: it wasn't her forte. But Muggle Studies WAS...so...here she was, making an appearance, unsure of this class or how she would feel as the lesson unraveled. Because like....numbers? Numbers were hard. Eden didn't like feeling stupid. Not at all. The desks were practically on top of one another, and Eden had to squeeze into one. "Good day--" she nodded at Moxley and Tanner. Well, at least she new Tanner from Ravenclaw stuff. Nice lady, she was. Hmph. |
Another joint lesson and another with these two subjects together! It was rather sunny so that meant Adi's glasses were in place for this extra bright light. He bounded into the classroom, missing the cold but stopped in his tracks, his eyes widening at the sight of the cobwebs. GOSH! The things were taking over EVERYWHERE! The boy had no desire to have a repeat of what had happened to him at the Hufflepuff Barrels so he merely trudged closer to his Professors to greet them while keeping his eyes open for the webs lest he walked into some. "Hello, Professors! Need help getting rid of the webs?" He was an expert at this, you see, having used his spell work to clean the sticky things away a few times before. Hehe. .................... Now for a seat! Adi noted the tight knit setting of the class as well as the space at the back. He was quite curious about said space but he waved to Zeke and Eden before taking a seat in the second row. All they needed now were more students. |
Another combination class. Janelle was always curious to see how the professors could mix information from their different classes together and make it work. Entering the room, She briefly scanned the scene. Janelle's first order of business was the greetings. "Hello Professor Tanner, Professor Moxley." There were only a few students present so far, so Janelle gave them a general greeting. "Hello everyone." Adi got a special wave, cause......you know.......he was Adi. It seemed that the seating arrangement was a little tight......definitely not for the claustrophobic. Janelle found a seat that seemed kinda roomy and sat down. It looked like it would be a while before class started so she busied herself organizing her things. |
Toby studied both Arithmancy and Muggle Studies, so a joint lesson would be pretty convenient in a way, squishing it all into one time slot. But, at the same time, joint lessons could be difficult on the brain. You had to absorb more information sometimes, and for two different subjects. When you had problems concentrating and initially processing information, that could make things challenging. Luckily, Toby was usually up for a challenge. As long as he was prepared for likely feeling exhausted by the time the lesson was over. He headed straight for his seat by the window now, glad nobody had taken it yet, sat down, and set up his things. "Morning Professor Tanner, Professor Moxley," Toby said, and was about to say something else when he caught sight of the cobwebs. Everywhere. They were literally everywhere, all over the school. And cobwebs meant SPIDERS and Toby was LOWKEY TERRIFIED OF SPIDERS, OKAY? He deadpanned at the nearest collection of cobwebs and subconsciously rubbed his itchy ankle on the chair leg, trying not to think about the possibility of arachnids chilling out in this room. Toby gave an involuntary shiver, which turned into shifting about in his seat, then he bounced his knees and tapped his quill. Fidgeting, the usual. Of course. |
How exactly was Arithmancy and Muggle Studies supposed to go together? Muggle Studies was fun and Aritmancy made her head and heart hurt. Too much math and stuff. She really needed a Ravvie best friend. They were good at everything, yes? AJ made her way into the classroom and the first thing she noticed was the cobwebs. There sure were a lot of them. "Morning, professors." Notice how she didn't put good before that morning? She had a reason, she did. Whether it was going to be good or not would still up for debate. "Hey, you..." she said as she made her way over to the boyfriend. Everybody else got head nods. It was morning, and she already had spoken more than usual for this time of day. |
Yoongi was a bit puzzled whether or not he should go to this class or not. He did not take both Arithmancy and muggle studies but only the last. Still, what if he was to be expected for this class? He could not afford any slacking in his OWL year. As he entered the classroom he immediately took note of how crammed it was. Two class at once wasn’t that normal. He vagualy wondered what they were going to learn when he noticed the webs. Now, this Gryffindor is not afraid of spiders however he did make a noise of disgust at it. "....hello, should i hel--" He was about to offer help but Adi beat him to it and he let him. "nevermind"The guy was a prefect anyways, he could deal with some webs. He sat down at a random seat and took out his chapstick for use. |
Arithmancy meant trio time in Sophie Brown's eyes, so she hoped Moxley wouldn't mind having such a fierce group of kids banding together to knock everyone's socks off. Tanner should've been used to it, though, even with all the weird stuff that had gone on since the beginning of the term between the three. Regardless, trio time meant a lot to this Ravenclaw, so... She was going to keep making it a thing until the boys broke her heart and told her they didn't want to be a dynamite friend group anymore. The classroom set-up was strange, though, and even though she wasn't particularly claustrophobic, the desks being so close together made her antsy already. But... at least if she was sandwiched between Tobes and Zander, life couldn't have been TOO bad, could it? "I like what you've done with the place, professors," was Sophie's choice of greeting to them accompanied by a bright smile as she slid into the desk beside Tobes, ensuring that there was an open desk on the other side of her for Zander to have. Yeah, the cobwebs really brought out the whole spooky Hogwarts "we're all going to die" ambiance that it often gave off. |
Arithmancy and Muggle Studies. The former being a lot less interesting than the latter, but both just so happened to be subjects Zander was actually good at. It was like a once and a life time thing, just saying. Which, by the way, only made the prospects of having a joint lesson that much more appealing. Normally he wasn't one to like the joint lessons, but only 'cause they meant you'd have double (and sometimes TRIPLE) the information AND you'd have to jump around to different subjects on top of that. But this time, Zander didn't actually mind. Plus, he liked his Professors. So it was like a win-win... win? So he walked into the room with a small smile on his face as he walked over to greet Tanner. "Hi Professor, what's up with all the cobwebs?" There seemed to be a lot of those around lately. Maybe the castle was just going through some midlife crisis or something. Not that he knew what that even meant. The, he waved over at Professor Moxley. Yes, he was empty handed but only because if he brought an entire cheesecake for her it'd mean he'd have to bring an entire cheesecake for Tanner. And really, there was only so much cheesecake that a kid could bring to class, y'know? "Hey Professor, I'm super excited about the lesson," eh, sort of. But he was TRYING to be. And now that he had greeted his Professors, time to take a seat and woah. It sure was cramped in here. It made the whole seat decision process that much more diff-OH. Sophie Brown and Toooby. Perfect. He beamed at the pair of them and walked right over to slide into the seat on Sophie's other side. Hi friends. |
Benny didn't know what was up with these joint lessons this term. Now Arithmacy and Muggle Studies were meeting together and the sixth year was curious to see just how they fit together. Though first...he wish he knew what was up with the cobwebs, litterring the classroom as he stepped inside like he had seen elsewhere in the castle. House-elfs falling down on their jobs? "Morning Professors," he said, greeting the two women as he moved further into the classroom. Ben then turned to look at the desks crammed into the room, debating where to sit. He spotted Adi there in the second row, AJ sitting beside him on one side. However the other side was empty. The Gryffindor bit the inside of his cheek and headed over. Hey..Mind if I sit here?" he asked to cover his bases. He wasn't going to just make the assumption as they resumed their friendship. |
Arithmancy and Muggle Studies in one lesson. This was destined to be a great lesson. Even though Cinna wasn't taking Arithmancy this term she was here for the muggle studies portion of the lesson. She would just play along with Tanner in her Arithmancy lesson too. Brush up on her Arithmancy skills, if she had any. Making her way to the Arithmancy classroom, it kinda felt weird going back into the classroom after not taking the class this term. She walked into the classroom with a big grin on her face. Cobwebs? The sixth year tilted her head. Interesting. Anyway she headed on passed the two professors. "Hello, professor Tanner, Moxley." Still grinning she went on to find herself a seat. Merlin. This was a tight squeeze. Good thing there wasn't a lot of students here yet. It was relatively easy to find a seat. And easy to get too right now too. Settling down in a seat she waited for class to start. |
Lux was rather interested for this lesson, because she wasn't sure what they would be doing in a lesson that combined Muggle Studies and Arithmancy. Would it involve tacos like last time? She was hoping so, but that seemed doubtful when the class was being held outside of the kitchens... Pout. Stepping inside the classroom, she smiled at the Professors. "Hello Professor Tanner and Professor Moxley. How are you both?" Waving to her friends, she took her seat. This time she chose to sit beside Cinna. "Hey!" she said with a smile. ...But what was with all the cobwebs? Did the Professors need help cleaning them? Lux could so do that. |
How in the name of Merlin was there a connection between Arithmancy and Muggle Studies? Were they gonna be learning muggle maths? Trigonometry? Jeez, save him now. Needless to say, Grayson was quite a bit less enthusiastic about this combined lesson than he had been for the Potions/Astro/Defence combo. Anyone who knew him well enough would know the reason why. He could only hope that this would be an interesting lesson and not one that would make him wish he was still laying in bed. Stifling a yawn, the seventh year headed into the class-- What. Just........ what? Grayson squinted at the desks and the arrangement. Alright, he wasn't one to take much notice of something as boring as how close together the seats were but this was kinda ridiculous, wasn't it? Look at the seating arrangement! Jeez, were Moxley and Tanner tryna get them to get to know their neighbours or what? Speaking of the professors, he turned to them next. "Helloooooo Professors Tanner and Moxley." Cue a single nod of the head towards the two of them before the boy went to take a seat. Please, for the love of Merlin, let the people sitting near him be cool and like-- Holy Merlin, were those freaking COBWEBS?! |
Another joint lesson, arithmancy and muggle studies. Sounded interesting. What would they be doing today? Penelope smiled as she entered the classroom. "Good morning Professor Tanner, Professor Moxley." Her smile was gone as soon as she saw how close together the desks were. The claustrophobic girl did not like desks that were this close together, not at all. She needed to find a desk at the end of the row if possible. She really, really wasn't comfortable with the desks being this close together. Penelope tools seat near the front of the room that was at the end of the row. Even without a desk on one side next to her, she still felt sort of boxed in. She really didn't like how the desks were arranged. They were too close together. How long was she going to have to sit here? These desks were not good for claustrophobic people like her. No, she wasn't going to sit here any longer than she had to. Leaving her belongings at the desk that she had chosen, Penelope stood up and moved away from the desks. She would need to sit down when the lesson started, but she didn't want to stay where she felt uncomfortable. |
Norah made her way into the classroom smiling brightly on account of Professor Tanner AND Professor Moxley happening at the same exact time. That was always good news, considering they were all sorts of cool. And nice. And stuff. GOOD STUFF. "Hiiii Professors," she said as she passed, wiggling her fingers at the two adults. Big smiles, too, just for good measure. She wove through the desks until she found one right smack in the middle where she unloaded aaalll the note taking stuff, staring pointedly at her parchment because she HAD seen those cobwebs but it didn't mean she couldn't pretend they weren't there. Even meanie butt spiders weren't allowed to get in the way of how fun this lesson was going to be. |

Moxley was here and energetic as ever. She'd graciously decided not to sit on top of Tiara's desk and instead, found herself a seat just beside it. Not that she was sitting at the moment, oh no. The Muggle Studies Professor was standing at the front of the room and doing her part by hi, hello, and howdy-ing the students who'd joined them in the room. She'd even saluted Ms. Kittredge, just for good measure. Those Hufflepuffs were cuties, swear to Merlin! "That's right, kids, find a seat! Pack it on in! It's going to be a good lesson so make sure you can see up front, yeah?" Grin! They had a few more minutes before they had to start officially which was good. Meant Moxley had a bit more time to prepare herself before Tanner started in with the numbers business. |
Moxley and Tanner were teaching today. Together. Hugh wasn't exactly sure how these would correlate, but he was game, yo. After all, the likelihood that he would be philosophising in his corner was super, super high. Ahem. ANYWAY. He grinned and bounced in the room past both of the professors saluting both. That was solider speak for hey...in case they were curious. |

Angel had a funny feeling this lesson was either going to be great or it was going to be a shipwreck of a lesson, she hoped it would be first. "Hello Professors, How are you both this glor...." Angel was confused was she late? on time? in the wrong lesson? Angel just looked at her feet, there was nothing to see here right! |

WOOT! Zhenya loved a joint class! She made her way down to the arithmancy classroom where they would all be packing in for arithmancy and muggle studies. Zhenya took both of those classes, so of course she was going to attend, and love it. She walked into the oddly spaced classroom. Not a great use of space, she thought, but it must be for a reason, and Zhenya was sure all would be revealed soon enough. "Hello Professor Tanner, hello Professor Moxley," Zhenya greeted both professors with a big smile, before squeezing into a desk. |
Cobwebs. Blah. She was sick of seeing them everywhere. "Hello, professors," Heather greeted as she entered the classroom and took a seat. Fully prepared for this lesson she was, with pencils and everything. Hey, she was pretty sure this was going to be about muggle math. A subject she was absolutely horrible at, thank you very much. Hence, the pencils. Easily erasable. |
Big yawn! She hadn't really gotten that much sleep the night before because she was working on her History of Magic homework and entries. Nothing was coming to her so she was up until three-thirty in the morning. Emmylou managed to make her way to the classroom without falling asleep. The sixth year walking and smiled. Just because she was tired didn't mean that she wasn't happy. "Good Morning professors." She greeted them. She didn't know how she felt about all of these joint classes. |
Kate didn't really care for Arithmancy. She didn't really care for Muggle Studies either. These two professors, though?! Both were AWESOME! Tanner had been one of the first professors Kate had met last school year, and the woman had instantly made Kate feel safe and protected in a brand new, unfamiliar place. Moxley was just cool. Really cool. "Hello, Professor Tanner and Professor Moxley," Kate greeted, walking into the room. That was when Kate got a chance to take a look around the classroom, and the main thing that stood out to her was the cobwebs. Adi had said there were cobwebs, but she had yet to see any. At least, not any that would be considered 'in abundance'. She blinked at them but continued in to take her place amongst the others. |
Text Cut: Replies under here Well, they had a lot to accomplish and no more time than usual to do it in, so they really should get a move on here. "Good morning, students!" she said brightly. "Welcome to Arithmancy class.. and Muggle Studies class!" she said, inclining her head towards Meredith. "I know we still have a few moments before the bell to begin class rings, but we have a lot to do today. Now, many of you will have guessed the topic for today's lesson to be muggle mathematics.." she began. After a slight hesitation, she finished with, "..but that would not be correct." Then Tiara paused for a few moments to let the sighs of relief she knew would come die down. With a flick of her wand, a large number appeared on the board. Quote:
OOC: Class has officially begun, but if you need to wrap up a conversation at the beginning of your post that's totally fine! |
Uhh...what? See, this was why Kate didn't like Arithmancy. There was no wild guessing here. In most other subjects, you could provide an opinion or give a thought. In Arithmancy, though, you had to arrive at a certain number, and there was no other way around that. Kate copied the numbers onto her parchment. 441,315,565,100 Kate completed the work the best way she knew how. 4 + 4 + 1 = 9 3 + 1 + 5 = 9 5 + 6 + 5 = 16 ... 1 + 6 = 7 1 + 0 + 0 = 1 9 + 9 + 7 + 1 = 26 2 + 6 = 8 8: Authority, finances, business, success, material wealth, self-mastery, complex thought/reasoning, fluidity, movement Sooo..., had she done the right thing? What was the tried and true method anyway? |
TRIO TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME. It didn't matter that Tanner didn't like her own classroom set up, which would NORMALLY have made Sophie frown at her, but she had TOBES AND ZANDER ON EITHER SIDE OF HER. Squished between them, even, and LIFE WAS BEAUTIFUL. When class got started, Sophie was grinning goofily, unable to contain her elation from having such superb company - but when Tanner gave them a mission to reduce a big number, the Ravenclaw realized she hadn't even gotten out her materials for class. She'd just been sitting there, basking in the presence of her best friends. Whoops. So she took out her materials, then, and got settled briskly before squinting up at the board. As tempted as she was to just add up the numbers and get an answer in her head, she knew Tanner probably wanted them to show work and write it down for whatever reason, so... the prefect did so. Text Cut: The nerd's work She left some space between the numbers and the plus signs to make sure she didn't miss a number as she copied it, and she made quick work of adding them up. Thirty-five reduced to eight, and... she'd arrived at an answer maybe too quickly, so possibly incorrectly, but she was too hyped up to care. Eight. And she knew chapter three - the number eight had to do with authority figures and success and wealth, so she wrote down those characteristics beside the number "8" on her paper. But... what was this all about? Hmm. Maybe that was the amount of money someone had? MUGGLE money, since this was partly Muggle Studies class? Sophie Brown gave it some thought, and she figured that made a fair amount of sense. Maybe it was the biggest amount of documented money a Muggle person had ever had. Could've been, couldn't it? |
...right. Eden smiled a little at Tanner but didn't like the bubbling nerves in her stomach right now. She should have skipped. She really should have. She was going to blow BUBBLES at this...she just knew it. ugh. WHAT? EDEN WAS ALREADY LOST. HOW EVEN. SHE HAD NO IDEA WHAT TANNER WAS TALKING ABOUT. Deep breaths, McGee. She tried to look at someone else's paper to see what they were doing..Merlin's pants. Reduction method? Whaaaa? What even was that..."Um--Professor? I have no idea what the reduction method is..." She felt really stupid. |
Sunglasses? O_O Adi promptly whipped off his specs to see if they had been magically transformed into sunglasses but nope they were the same black rimmed things. Er, did Tanner need specs, too? "I can't, Professor. The sunlight hurts my eyes.'' He crammed the apparatus on this face again, whipping out his wand and quickly casting the Scouring Charm here and there then here and there again. Wheeee! There was no a sufficiently cleaner class. "There you go, Professor!'' Adi smiled broadly before trudging off. .................... He had neatly set up his books and writing apparatus on his desk when AJ arrived. The girlfriend got a bright smile from him. "Hi back. Are you sleep walking?" Hehe. Adi knew so well mornings were not her thing but she looked so darn cute like that... all sleepy and what not. The Hufflepuff turned at the sound of Benny's voice and waving back to Janelle in the process. "Hey, Benny,'' he said cheerily as though nothing had happened between them. "No, you can't.'' He kidded, he kidded! "I lied. You sure can.'' He needed the bestie to be secure again. Yes. .................... Annnnnd cue the start of the lesson! MERLIN! Maths? Adi had had enough of that during his primary school years, thank you very much! He had thought he ran away from the dratted subject when he came to Hogwarts. Even though they did use it in Arithmancy, he preferred here because it wasn't as complicated. Oh, wait. Tanner was kidding? PHEW! A relieved Adi took down the numbers from the board and began his work. Reduction method. This was something he knew well. SPOILER!!: Adi's Work! ALL DONE, YO! |
And Eden ...Tanner had to be kidding, right? Muggle math? OH THANK MERLIN they were going to be doing something else. Good one, Professor. Lux was much better at the good old reduction method. Arithmancy didn't get much simpler than that. The number on the board was rather long, but it was nothing she couldn't handle. Opening her notebook, she began working on the problem: Quote:

Toby was back to squinting at those cobwebs again, ready to leap up out of his seat and throw himself over Sophie and Zander and off to safety should any spiders suddenly appear. All seemed to be fine so far, though, which was something. Once the lesson started, Toby managed to drag his gaze away and look at Tanner instead. Okay, yes, time to find out how these two lessons were about to interconnect, yes? Not muggle mathematics then, thank Merlin. Toby simply would not have survived a lesson that was purely maths, though he hadn't actually speculated that that might be the topic until Tanner herself said it was wrong. But yeah, anyway... reducing. That was the kind of maths Toby could do SPOILER!!: Parchment Toby checked through his answers again, knowing that this class was the one where he was most likely to make careless mistakes at all, but it was exactly the same the second time round. He went over the lines that made up the little '8' a couple more times, making the number stand out, bold and proud, before he looked up again with a suddenly curious expression. He raised his hand. "How come we're reducing this number, Professor? Is it just random, or...?" Just curious, y'know. |
Um? Muggle mathematics? She should have guessed. Zhenya was even worse at muggle mathematics than she was at arithmancy. Her mother had really tried to force her to learn her times tables and algebra and fractions and decimals, but had ultimately given up. Zhenya was far too stubborn, saying she would never have to use it. Apparently she was wrong. And wrong again... Zhenya breathed out a sigh of relief, bending her head down to the table for a few seconds. When she looked up, there were numbers on the board. Zhenya flipped through her textbook until she got to chapter three; they would be using reduction for the numbers. She could do that. She unraveled a piece of parchment, and wrote Arithmancy/Muggle Studies on the top, then dipped her quill into the ink. Quote:

Janelle was relieved. No muggle mathe today. Yay! That was not exactly one of her favorite subjects when she was in muggle school. As a matter of fact, she was quite happy to escape it at Hogwarts. Arithmancy involved enough math for her, thank you. And then......the reduction method. So that was what they would be starting with today. Janelle looked at the ginormous number that Professor Tanner wanted them to reduce. Yep. Enough math for her. There was no escaping it though and the second year set to work. SPOILER!!: Janelle's work With the first task completed, Janelle wondered where the professors were heading with this lesson. How was all of this going to tie into Muggle Studies? If it wasn't math, what was it? She guessed that she would just have to be patient and see when the time came. Unfortunately, patience was not her strong suit. |
Those words coming from Tanner's mouth were amazing. NOT MUGGLE MATH! ... Thank Circe, or he'd be in strife. As it was though, reducing numbers was mathematical enough. Inking his quill and dating his parchment, Zeke copied down the number from the board and set about reducing it. He only looked up from his parchment when an older student said they didn't know what the method was. Could he help her? Should he help her?.... in the end it seemed as though Lux had it under control. Focusing on his work, he completed the calculation and consulted chapter three to identify the number meaning. SPOILER!!: notes |
Wait, so he should help? Yoongi looked towards the Prefect who was already busy cleaning but the Professor also announced that class was about to begin so he stayed where he was. A bit of webs did not hurt anyone. He was one of the few people who let out a sigh of relief when she said that they were not going to do muggle mathematics. And then numbers appeared on the board and he already got a headache. There was a reason why he took Muggle studies and not Arithmancy. Numbers hurt his head. He looked around him at the students getting busy calculating the number on the board. But…what was he supposed to do? He tried taking a peek off of someone else parchment, but even if he could see it he still had no clue what he was supposed to be doing. Well…he guessed he should first write down the number and see from there. Quote:

Grunt... that was all Adi got out of her. She had done her fair share of talking before being fully awake, and now it was a process. No. No, no, no. She actually hadn't guessed that they were doing muggle math. That was the last thing on her mind even if it was the most obvious guess. AJ was debating on walking smooth out of the classroom. Would anybody notice if she crawled out the door? Not muggle math. Thank the sweet baby unicorns. Crisis averted and her knees wouldn't have to get assaulted. There was math happening though. She couldn't really expect that not to happen, right? This whole reduction thing wasn't so bad though. Hopefully this was as tricky as the math got because her brain wasn't fully awake at the moment. Trying her best to make her work legible, she began to scribble down the word problem on a spare piece of parchment. SPOILER!!: work Boom. She was done, and slightly more awake from having to think. |
Zander took out his materials while he waited for the rest of the class to fill up with people. All the while he kept stealing quick glances at Sophie Brown, who happened to look like she was having the best time of her life just sitting down waiting for class to start. The very thought was enough to make him chuckle. You'd think after they all sat together in Arithmancy a few times, the sparkle would ware off. Apparently not. And not before long Professor Tanner started explaining-- well actually, that was the worst and most vague explanation Zander had ever heard in his entire life. Though, she probably wasn't trying to explain more than just presenting them with a task. But you know, still. Anyways, he needed to get started. SPOILER!!: Wooooork |
Arithmancy being an elective course, Tiara knew there would be some here that were not familiar with what she was talking about. So she took special care to roam the room in search of those in need of assistance. Text Cut: Eden and Lux And Eden was her first customer, by the sound of it. "Coming, Miss McGee," she said from the opposite side of the room. It took her a while to wend her way over, given the close proximity of the desks. By the time she had arrived, someone had beaten her to the punch. "Yes, Miss Carrington.." Tiara scanned her work. "You are more than able to assist. Thank you for offering!" She turned to Eden. "You're in good hands, don't worry," she said with a smile. Then Tiara moved on to others, but of course she could come back if necessary. Text Cut: Yoongi Bear Here was the Gryffindor that had offered to help clean up, but she didn't know his name. Clearly he needed help, but that made sense because he didn't take the course. "It looks like you could use a crash course in our reduction method, Mister..?" Help a lady out with a name, here. |
Quote:
"I can help him out, professor." If you wanted help from AJ that was. Arithmancy was not a favorite subject for a reason. However, this reduction thing she could handle. If things got real the both of them would need a Ravenclaw to sit next to. AJ peered at his work. "All you have to do it add all of the numbers up. With reduction you can't have more than a single digit for your final number. So, if once you added all of the numbers you got a 15... you would have to add those together and 6 would be your final answer." Make sense? "Go on!" Give it a go. AJ would make sure he came to the correct answer before she completely left him. |
Ian looked at that HUGE number that the professor had written up on the board. Math wasn't his favorite thing, but he enjoyed muggle studies. He got to work on to the number as the professor did what she had to do (helping students). SPOILER!!: parchment Ian was rubbish at this arithmancy thing...and his parchment soon became covered with scribbles and scratches and all manner of marks, but not really the correct answer. He considered going closer to Adi. Adi was smart as a whip with this stuff. |
Mentions! Alright so technically speaking, Moxley hadn't exactly done well in Arithmancy when she was at Hogwarts. But now she was a grown woman with a grown woman's brain and being afraid of a little numbers lesson was silly, right? Which is why she'd agreed to do this class with Tiara. Strong, confident Gryffindor that she was, Meredith Moxley was ready to face this reduction method head-on! RAWR! And so she got up from her seat once the kiddos started working and walked around, checking work over shoulders. ...Or kind of checking, anyway. "Right, yes. Addition. Add the things, well done!" Errr..yes! Moxley smiled down at AJ with a nod of approval. The younger Gryffindor seemed confident about her work so the Muggle Studies professor had no reason to doubt her. Moving on, the brunette noticed that one of the badger boys had a paper filled with more scribbles than math and though she couldn't exactly blame him, she also knew she had to help or get someone else to help and she was going with the latter. "Mr. Tinker! It's really a matter of spacing out the numbers and then adding 'em all up and then, y'know, reducing them!" See? Math wiz over here! WOOP! "But it'd be good practice for one of the other kids to help you, y'know, to learn how to do it so why don't you get Mr. Adair to assist you!" Surely Zander wouldn't refuse to help, heh. "Prefect Adair, over here!" |
SPOILER!!: the Moxinator and Iaaaan Zander was pretty confident in his work this time around. Y'know, after he got his OWL score and everything, Arithmancy seemed to get a whole ton easier. Weird, huh? Like Professor Tanner was just giving them easier work now or something. He quickly turned as he heard his name being called out. Professor Moxley was probably trying to congratulate him on... Oh. Man. Looked like she was trying to get him to help a kid out. Which he didn't completely mind, but the desks were so cramped and he had to walk ALL THE WAY OVER THERE. But he had a point to prove when it came to Meredith Moxley. So Zander was coming, okay? Ahem. He quickly |
Numbers. Riiiiight. But y'know what? She wasn't going to let THOSE put a damper on this combination of classes because she said so, so there. Norah was also going to ignore the class that she didn't even like Arithmancy in the first place, but Professor Tanner was a cool cat which made everything okay. Right. Arithmancy? No problem. She looked at the numbers on the board and immediately thought there was a problem. THAT number? But it was GINORMOUS. No. No Norah calm down, it was going to be okay, remember? Right. That meant smiles and stuff. The fourth year forced a grin (although it probably looked more like a grimace) as she wrote the number down on her parchment, followed by a happy face doodle just in case she forgot that this was going to br a happy lesson. Happy happy happy lesson. Ahem. Shifting her quill around in her fingers, she bent over her parchment and began to write....something. Something was better than nothing, anyways. SPOILER!!: notes |

"I used to be horrid at this stuff.. But I learned a trick that made it loads easier, so there's still hope." He smiled at the boy, hoping to lighten up his mood a bit. The Gryffindor didn't even bother trying to grab a desk, instead he just kneeled by Ian's, letting his eyes skim the paper another time. Y'know, it probably would've been a better idea to bring his own calculations along. But unfortunately, that ship had sailed. His paper was far too difficult to reach at the moment since this room was like an obstacle course of piled up desks. ... Was he being too dramatic? Maybe. "Okay so it looks like you've done everything right so far," he said looking up from the paper. "It's only real confusing looking 'cause the number's so complicated." How the heck was he supposed to explain addition??? Merlin, six years of school did not prepare him for this. "Maybe try to break down the addition into smaller chunks so you haven't got to do it all at once?" Yes that was his GRAND trick. Not really much of a scientific break through... But, y'know. SPOILER!!: Parchment "See how I grouped them off into smaller chunks?" That would make it tons easier, plus they were smaller numbers so the Hufflepuff could probably use his fingers to count. Shhh don't laugh. Everyone does it. Especially Zander Adair. But HEY he got an excellent score on his OWL so CLEARLY it was a good way of doing things, okay? Don't judge. "So for the first chunk that's 4+4, that equals eight," He scribbled down on the parchment. Hope Ian doesn't mind. Ahem. "See?" He nodded his head as if to tell the boy to work the rest out on his own. "Just make sure to write these smaller calculations on the side so that it doesn't confuse you for the actual reduction stuff." Because that would be bad. SPOILER!!: Parchment with Zander's example thing He paused to let the Hufflepuff calculate a few for his own before adding, "then, once you've got all your little chunks calculated, you can add all of those up to get your grand total number and that'll answer the equation you had written before!" he pointed at the "4+4+1+3+1+5+5+6+5+1=" the Hufflepuff had written earlier. "I got 35 as my answer for that part," he whispered. Y'know, just so Ian could check to see if he was on the right track. "And once you get there the reduction is easy!" So uh, was it going to work? "Does that make any sense?" Was he following? 'Cause if not Zander could try to explain it some other way or something... |
Ian watched as the boy kneeled down to be closer to the desk. Ian felt a little bad that a seventh year was having to help a sixth year boy do simple addition. It just didn't seem like he was getting where he needed to be with his own calculations. Zander was rather helpful. The breaking up of the numbers certainly did help him to add the numbers easier. Ian copied the equation the way Zander had. SPOILER!!: parchment Ian sighed a breath of relief. " I guess that I was just struggling to add those numbers as they were grouped in one long equation. I suppose my brain doesn't keep track of them as well as it should and so your help is greatly appreciated. As I remember it, the final result should be 8. I'm so sorry you had to waste your time helping me out. I'm sure that you must thinking I'm a blooming idiot who doesn't know how to add simple numbers." Ian was relieved, but also a bit embarrassed that he couldn't handle simple addition. |
Text Cut: Replies to all you smarties Tiara took one last look out into the corridor. Not seeing anyone, she decided it was time to start the actual new material. "Back up front if you would, please." A few moments' pause was enough to allow her to speak again. "If you don't take Arithmancy, do not worry about the reducing, the others have helped you out." She flicked her wand at the board, making the work and answer appear, along with the textbook's meaning. Quote:
OOC: Completely off the wall answers are fine! If you need to finish your calculations, that's also alright. We'll move on in 16-20 hours depending on when I get up in the morning. |

SPOILER!!: start of class Class was starting now. Penelope looked up at the board and saw the number that Professor Tanner had written. They had to use the reduction method on 441,315,565,100. SPOILER!!: work There. Her answer was 8. Penelope looked over her work to check for mistakes. She didn't see any obvious mistakes. It wasn't really difficult to use the reduction method on large numbers. You just had to break it down into smaller numbers. |
Ahhhhh, okay. So... Tanner was being all mysterious about it. Well, that was fine, 'cause Toby knew that sooner or later the answer to his question would be revealed. He simply smiled and nodded his head. Cool. He'd wait. Aaaaaand soon enough, they were getting right to it! Well... almost. If it... represented a place... what would it... uh... what? Toby blinked at the professor a few times. What... was she...? Huh. Well that was a weird question. The seventh year frowned thoughtfully and looked at the board, and then at his parchment, and back again, trying to think of a place that that big ol' number made him think of. Uhhhhh... The first thing that came to mind was, perhaps, completely obvious. He raised his hand and offered his answer. "Quidditch stadium. 'Cause it's a huge number, and stadiums have a huge number of seats. Maybe not..." There was a moment in which it looked like Toby was actually going to have a try at saying the number out loud, but... no... not a clue. "... not that many seats, but that's just what the number makes me think of, y'know?" Naturally. Sorta... one track mind over here. Thinking about it... would a Quidditch stadium with 441,315,565,100 seats possibly be bigger than the ENTIRE PLANET? That would be so cool. |
SPOILER!!: Professor Ian had just finished working on the problem when the professor began to speak again. She posted the answer, which he was pleased to have gotten correct. And then she asked a question. He thought for a moment and raised his hand. "Professor. My dad told me about this place in Asia where old men spend all their time in meditation and learning how to fight. I think he called them Sowling monkeys. Said they were perfect at mastering themselves. And could deliver a right proper beating if they need to but he told me they don't like to fight." |
Well, of course she'd been right. It was a simple calculation, and it would've been embarrassing if she'd messed it up, really. And it was mega cute, the way Zander got picked on to help another kid. That basically meant he was an all-star student, right? He got big smiles. But now the question was... WHAT WERE THE NUMBERS FOR? She squinted at Tanner and her vagueness - the number represented a place, not an amount of money? What kind of place, was the question, and Sophie considered it for a little while. Success... authority... wealth... And her hand raised. "Well... when I think of success 'n wealth 'n authority, there's no higher than--..." she paused. She was going to say the Ministry of Magic, but then she caught sight of Moxley - this was partly Muggle Studies class, wasn't it? So... maybe she needed to try for something more... Muggle. "Than... the Queen? The Royal Family, maybe, or like... Buckingham Palace or something, 'cause that's all wealth and success and authority and stuff." And stuff. Really good answer there, Soph. |
Apparently Professor Tanner had believed his question to be directed at her. "Um...okay," Benny said responding to her despite the mix-up so he wasn't rude.He raised a slight eyebrow as Adi answered to the negative at first about him taking the seat beside him. Thankfully he didn't react any further for his friend proved to be just kinding with his remark. "Funny..." he mused with a small smirk. They sure were getting back to normal. ------and then class was beginning. Reducing could be tricky and Benny was always having to double check to make sure he either didn't miss anything or didn't go too far with what they were doing. With the number presented, the Gryffindor copied it cautiously into his notes before proceeding to follow what he knew about reduction. He didn't have the excuse of being one of those students that didn't take arithmacy. Quote:

Prof and AJ Oh no, the Professor was walking in his direction. Had she noticed that he had no idea what he was supposed to be doing? He did not like that… “Ehm…” he said , getting a bit embarrassed. At least she was not mad. “Yes..i think so…I have no idea what I’m doing…” he answered without looking at her but at his paper. Merlin’s beard this was embarrassing. “Hyland, Professor.. Yoongi Hyland” Huh? Who was PSSSSSTing at him? Yoongi looked after the Professor gave the approval of someone helping him out and realised it was AJ. “Ah, thanks!” He let her see his notes, biting his lower lip as she peered at it and listened to what she was explaining. “So…like this?” he said and began to write down on his parchment again Quote:
Quote:
And class was continuing. Yoongi was glad that this time it wasn’t them having to calculate anything right now. Could the Muggle Studies bit come now? “Minister’s office?” he piped in. |
Norah beamed at Professor Tanner's praise, squishing her cheeks between her palms because she didn't even know what to SAY to that. A professor noticed her progress! They really did! It was practically a MIRACLE. She found it hard to keep the grin off her face because apparently it just wanted to stick there, which was really fine with her. Maybe it was even the goal. Who knew that numbers and maths and things could actually result in something that wasn't awful. Oh. A place? That was easy peasy, she'd thought about that one already. The fourth year shot a hand up in the air and waved it around, so ready to be two for two in this class they'd got going. She could see it now, Norah Kittredge QUEEN of Arithmancy. "A bank!" Geddit? Numbers? Business? Wealth? It totally worked. Plus banks were cool when they were like gringotts because goblins had the best faces ever. |
Kate looked from her work to the professor then back again. So she'd gotten the correct answer?! AWESOME! She didn't have to re-do anything, and she'd really surprised herself on thinking this one through and figuring out what to do without any help. Smiling to herself, she put a big check mark next to work just BECAUSE. She looked down at the meaning of the number eight, which she'd copied from the textbook. If the meaning was a place, what place would it be? A bank was her first answer, but since that had already been said, she opted for some place else. "What about the Ministry of Magic?" she asked, her hand raised. Her mom worked there, and there seemed to be a lot of authority figures and successful people there. Material wealth? Hmm. Maybe not so much. It was likely a bank, she decided. |
Catching up :3 So this was officially the best day because it was two uber easy lessons combined into ONE. Carefully penning her notes, she worked it out quietly for a moment or two: SPOILER!!: notes She underlined and circled her final answer and then Tanner proposed another question again. What sort of place might this number represent? The first thing that popped into her head was Hogwarts, but she felt the need to go more grandiose. Hogwarts was too simple. Too plain. "I think it could potential represent the idea of a place, as in one where the living is easy. Perhaps a tropical private island, or a five-star resort, a castle in the mountains, ..." Tia began after raising her hand. "It's luxurious, yet completely relaxed." |
Kate struggles in Math, part 1 SPOILER!!: Lux and Tanner Eden glanced over at Lux. "Okay..okay. Good. I..I might need a lot of help," she whispered to the Hufflepuff. GOSH WHY WASN'T EDEN'S BRAIN WORKING RIGHT NOW. It was annoying. But with Lux's help...and watching other people, Eden figured out how to do this.....reduction thing. Right. Yeah. Totally and completely easy, mhmm. Well...so...I have to do...4 + 4 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 5 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 1 + 0 + 0....which....equals 35. She scribbled all of this down as she did it. And then 3+5 is.... 8. Eden was glad this was EASY math, at least, Merlin. SPOILER!!: Tanner Eden raised her hand, after seeing what 8 meant and stuff..."Well...success and whatnot...a cooperation of some sort..and since this is combined with muggle studies--a muggle corporation of some sort." Was that a good answer? No. Eden was feeling.....eehhh about things. |
Moving closer to Eden, Lux smiled. She liked helping her friends and hopefully she would do a good job because math could be confusing. At least the first part was proving to be easy. Yep. Looked like Eden had it in the bag. She was going to stay here though because she was comfortable. Maybe she and Eden could help each other out later if the math got really hard. They could be an awesome team! BEAM. At Professor Tanner's question, Lux raised her hand. "I would that it would represent a business of some sort...like a real proper one with CEOs and stuff." |
Blink, blink. Interesting method? What did Tanner mean by that? Adi tilted his head at his Professor. "But this is always how I do my reduction calculations.'' He frowned at his parchment, taking a while to figure out what was meant by Tanner's statement. OH! She meant his reduction of 16 when he could simply have added the 16,9,9 and 1 then reduce it! He looked back at the woman. "I see what you mean. I really have no idea. Maybe we can try this method out sometime with random numbers to see if it works all the time.'' ................... Annnnd back to the class. Adi was totally done peeking into Benny's parchment, by the way. He had to make sure the bestie was doing things right. Yep, everything had seemed a-okay there. As for an answer to that question, he had one! Hand up, Adi volunteered, "A law firm!'' Hehe. Lawyers had all of those things going for them. Or maybe most. |
SPOILER!!: Ian Zander watched the whole time while Ian calculated the rest of the small chunks of numbers. Okay, he watched almost the whole time, but only because he had to steal glances over to his Arithmancy team that was sitting all the way over THERE. "Honestly, don't mention it." Aside from the fact that he had to do more work and climb around all those tables just to get here, "it's not a big deal." He tried his best to assure the Hufflepuff kid as he stood up. "Hope that sort of made things easier?" Zander awkwardly mussed his hair before flashing a huge smile over at Professor Moxley ('cause that had to earn him some brownie points, right?) and making his way back to his seat next to Soph. As for the question. It had Zander thinking. Of course all of the other answers were great. Buuuut they were in a JOINT lesson. Which meant the number had to mean something muggle. Or at least that was Zander's train of thought, anyways. "The muggle population of Europe?" It was a stretch |
Quote:
What did that represent? Well it was obvious, but she didn't want to spill too much information out at once, so she would break it down to a simple answer. She raised her hand and waited for Professor Tanner to call upon her, "To me, the number 8 would represent the place you call home. I think the number 8 is an infinite number, you could keep drawing over it without your quill leaving the page, so to me, I could keep going on in life, but my home will always be my home." Did that make sense? She wasn't sure the comparison made much sense but it did in her head. |
Quote:
He was correct! Of course he was correct! Ahem... yeah, totally normal for him. Not. He was pleased he started off the lesson on a good note, it could either get better, or just go downhill from here. He was hoping for better. Already he was curious about this lesson. Well, the arithmancy portion of it at least. If the number was a place? What place would it be? Authority? Success? Material wealth? ........... .... But then there were all those OTHER things too. Mastery and fluidity and other things. Hand up, Zeke voiced the most OBVIOUS conclusion that came to him. And by obvious, it was obvious to him. "Hogwarts, Professor. Cause you Professor's give us rules and there are consequences to breaking them, it's a place where we learn and become better at things and successful, we're in a super old castle with pretty portraits and shiny things..." not to mention the house point hour glasses held GEMS and STONES and things. So yeah. It was obvious to him. So so SO obvious. |
Janelle had gotten the problem right. That resulted in a sigh of relief, but before she could enjoy her victory.......a question was asked. What place might the number 8 represent? Janelle thought about the meanings of the number and quickly raised her hand. Not quickly enough apparently because the first two answers that popped into her head were taken. So much for the Ministry of Magic and Gringotts. Now she had to really think about the answer......and fast. Janelle should have thought of putting her hand down while she re-thought her answer. As she was trying to come up with a back-up answer, she was called on. "Um.......how about........the home of a self-made millionaire. They must have had some success to get all of that money and........they probably have a lot of material wealth-y things in their home. And if you're a millionaire, you probably have authority over something or someone.......right?" Wow, talking about grasping at straws. Well, it was an answer. |
Hyland toooo. <3 No accent. Okay. She knew who this was. Probably. Most likely. Anyways, what she said must not have been a hot confusing mess because he was scribbling on his parchment. This was promising. "Perfect." He got a thumbs up and a smile. "Oh, and anytime." It was really cool when she got to help somebody else because for the longest time she was always the one who was needing the help, not giving it. Slowly but surely, she was starting to wake up. It was a process. Whoops. Even the professor had noticed it. "Yes, ma'am." A nap sounded wonderful, but she knew that would never happen. Once AJ Valentine was going... well, there was no stopping her. Hmmm... creative answers were appreciated. That was a relief because that was pretty much all she had to offer. This lion was an out of the box thinker to say the least. Her hand shot into the air. See? She was awake. "I think it would be a taco stand." She had a point, promise! "Loads of money in the taco business and if you get to sling taco meat all day... well, I don't what could be more successful than that." You know what? She was going to have a taco stand right outside of her vet office. She couldn't wait to tell Adi. |

So, onto the new material. "Telephone numbers and house numbers can be used in Arithmancy, believe it or not. The main idea is that if the number reduces down to something bad, you may want to reconsider buying the house or perhaps taking a different telephone number." Tiara walked to the board and wrote by hand 'Karmic Numbers.' "If you look in chapter three, you'll see a list of karmic numbers, sometimes referred to as karmic debts. They are 10, 13, 14, 16, and 19. These are what you are trying to avoid at any point in your reduction." Or any type of debt.. but that was also beside the point. "For instance..." Quote:

Whaa! Way to go Sophie! Adi now watched the numbers shift and do their thing so that a phone number formed. Yep, he could see it was a phone number now though he indeed found it difficult to believe phone numbers were used in the subject. He wondered if he should keep the information about phone numbers for reference when he was buying his future house. Hehe. Alrightey. So Karmic Numbers must be avoided at ALL times. The sixth year got that. He eyed the numbers on the board. For famous buildings, he sure didn't recognise any. Oh, well. That's why there were phone books... to look up numbers. But onto more calculations! SPOILER!!: Adi's Work cont'd After he was done with the calculations, the bespectacled student raised his hand. "The building that has the second number should change it pronto because there are two Karmic numbers when calculated, 19 and 10. Does that mean that the karmic debt from that number is doubled, Professor? The other two numbers don't seem to have any debts attached though so I reckon those are safe.'' Interesting. This was all so interesting! |
And THAT ladies and gentlemen was how you got points just for being awesome. AJ was beaming. "Thanks, professor." Tanner just got some cool points in AJ's book. Did she know? Now she was having a hard time not thinking about tacos. It was a daily struggle for her. What about bad karma? Ohhh... interesting. The brunette never would have thought twice about phone numbers and what it could mean. This sounded like a load of rubbish and very Divination-y, buuuut who cares... it was interesting. Time for more reduction. AJ eyed her lion buddy that needed help earlier. Was he okay? Because she could still help, just sayin'. Right. On to make some scribbles on her paper. First she jotted down all of the numbers. SPOILER!!: work Interesting. VERY interesting. The second number they used was all kinds of bad. Adi had a good question. AJ was curious what that could mean too... you know IF she bought in to all of this stuff. |
Janelle listened as Professor Tanner explained the correct answer to the previous question. Well, she had certainly missed that one. Annnd she certainly hadn't guessed that the number they were reducing was a phone number. Janelle copied down the new phone numbers and wondered what they belonged to. They'd probably find out after they finished working. She'd just have to wait. In the meantime, the numbers weren't going to reduce themselves so she started adding them together. SPOILER!!: Janelle's work With her calculations complete, Janelle looked them over. Two numbers got a thumbs up and one got a big thumbs down. Janelle wasn't sure whether she was supposed to write down her opinion or give her thoughts out loud. She decided to write her answer so she went back to her notes and added a brief yay or nay. Janelle noticed the area code on the second and bad karmic number. She knew that area code because she had family with that same area code. Knowing that 202 was the area code for Washington, DC, she wondered if that might be the number for the White House. Whoever had that number could sure use a more positive one. |
Toby gave Soph a casual nudge with his elbow when she went ahead and earned those five points Okay, yes, moving on. Phone numbers. Right. Toby copied all those ones down from the board and got to work with reducing those ones as well. SPOILER!!: Parchment Finally, after spending a little longer on his work than usual, Toby looked up and rubbed at his eyes. He'd not noticed how close he'd been leaning to the parchment, frowning and squinting in concentration, until he'd sat up again, and now his eyes hurt as well as his brain. Not that the reducing thing was that hard (well... kinda... he'd managed to catch a few mistakes), but because he'd been puzzling over just how a phone number could be bad. Surely the 'bad' ones felt left out. It was kind of a judgemental practice and saddened his delicate little Hufflepuff heart. But he wasn't gonna say that, of course, so just sat in silence, yep. His thoughts on the numbers were on his parchment. |
Tanner say WHAT? She was... right? Well, SORT OF right? Wrong place, but correct idea behind it, AND she was getting extra points for being a solid guesser? Sometimes, life was beautiful, and for Sophie Brown, there was nothing more beautiful than being surrounded by her best friends and getting points for sheer dumb luck. Life was a dream, and she beamed at Tobes and his nudge with the utmost joy and pride. New material was being taught, and Sophie squinted at the karmic debts in chapter three of her textbook. So they were... bad things? And if one got those numbers in the equation, the little description beside the number was what one had to do to undo the bad karma? That was an interesting concept, if she was understanding it correctly, and when they were set to reduce a new set of numbers, Sophie got straight to work. Text Cut: Neeeerd Not bothering with re-checking her work once again, Soph set her writing utensil down and leaned back in her chair, stretching her arms up and behind her as Adi answered the professor's question for them, then gave a few pats on the shoulder nearest to her of both of her boys. Hi, best friends. Hi. And then she settled back into her chair and drummed her fingers lightly on her desk, looking entirely bored with everything. Would they do something fun soon? |
Oh. It was a telephone number. Lux was trying her hardest to concentrate on what Professor Tanner was telling them, but her mind kept drifting to tacos. It was AJ's fault for bringing them up. Karmic Debts were something she had heard about but hadn't studied too much; she DID know that they weren't good though. Lux made a note of which numbers to avoid and hoped that she would remember it. Never too early to start preparing for NEWTs. Looking at the board she copied down the numbers and worked on reducing them: SPOILER!!: Lux's Notes Finished, she looked over her work to make sure that there were no mistakes. Glancing over at Eden, she hoped that she was doing okay with it, but of course she would offer more assistance if needed. |
They had to reduce all of them?! Kate didn't mean to sound so UN-Ravenclaw, but she never looked forward to do any type of calculation. At least this was something new (to her) in Arithmancy. She had never thought of telephone numbers being affiliated with purchasing a house. She guessed that numbers were important no matter what the numbers were there for. She copied down the three phone numbers and began her calculations. 7323 8299 7 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 8 + 2 + 9 + 9 = 43 4 + 3 = 7 456 1111 4 + 5 + 6 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 19 1 + 9 = 10 1 + 0 = 1 9250 7111 9 + 2 + 5 + 0 + 7 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 26 2 + 6 = 8 Kate underlined the Karmic Debts. There were two of them, she thought--19 and 10. |
Yes, good, Hogwarts WAS an obvious answer... and though that had initially pleased him, now he was disappointed. He should stop with the OBVIOUS answers and think harder!!!!!! But without fretting too much, Zeke continued taking notes as the identity of the numbers were explained. Phone numbers, of course. OF COURSE. And it wasn't surprising that Sophie got points for getting it right. She was a know it all for real. FOR REALZ. But after copying down the numbers they were now working with, Zeke set about reducing them down. SPOILER!!: notes He decided very quickly that it sucked to be the one with the double karmic number thing, because karmic numbers just sounded BAD... even though they weren't, not really. Hand up, Zeke thought which question to ask first. "Professor, the second place seems kind of intense, right? Is it?" he started, curious. "I mean the whole abuse of power thing, that sounds intense, but the karmic numbers are like renewing and changing so its like, changing. So it's.... not abusing power anymore?" Where was he going with this? Oh right, CHANGE! "And am I right in thinking a lot of change happens here? The whole rebirthing thing and the beginning again thing with number 10 gave me that idea." |
Text Cut: Replies She cleared her throat. "I think most of us had a chance to finish or at least get most of the reduction done. No worries if you did not finish." The interpretation was more important than the calculation process anyhow. "I saw most of you reducing the first down to 7 from 43; the second reduced to 1 from 19 and 10; the third reduced to 8 from 26." Quote:
"Now I saw Mister Rogers had some good conclusions written down. I'll put them up for you.." A fluid motion of her wand erased the board, and a strange wiggling motion made Zeke's notes appear. SPOILER!!: Zeke's notes So it was time to reveal the locations. "The first number is for the British Museum, one of the best museums and research centers on the planet. The second is for the White House, the residence of the American president. The third is for the Sydney Opera House, which I would say hits more of the latter adjectives in the description." Quote:
Tiara checked her watch. Yes, they were out of time for her portion if Moxley was going to get her activity in. "So we are out of time for the Arithmancy part. I know a lot of you looked interested in the karmic debts. We will be looking into those later, so never fear!" Hopefully they would have time by the end of term. If not, there was always next year. "So now I turn it over to the capable hands of Professor Moxley!" |
Muggle Studies Begins!! Oh, right, her turn! Moxley had been wandering about the classroom, looking over shoulders and considering the work being done. Not that she was doing much helping. Probably the best thing considering she was rubbish with this numbers junk. Just ask her husband! He was always reminding her about it, considering how much money she spent on her muggle artifacts. Heh. Anyway…With a sheepish smile, the brunette headed back to the front of the room and gave Professor Tanner a big old Moxley grin! ”Pretty interesting stuff, Tiara! You lot with phones at home might want to check up on your own numbers some time, eh?” Was she making them nervous? Hehe. She quite liked doing that. ”Moving on, I’d like to take a moment to remind you of what we discussed in my last lesson. Alexander Graham Bell was the dude who patented the telephone in 1876. It also seemed that many of you realized that the landline phones I had you working with were pretty ancient looking but they still represented that type of phone quite nicely!” So no dissing her phone choice, people! Those were the best models and she quite liked the vintage feel of them! They were classic! ” Let’s keep in mind that landline phones are ones that are tethered to a telephone line. That means they need to stay within a small area. Cellular phones, however, are quite different. Let’s take a look at this picture.” ”Can anyone tell me anything you know about a cellular phone? It can be something you’ve heard, something you notice from the picture, or something you’ve read.” |
All of the numbers were muggle telephone numbers? They had learned about telephones in muggle studies. Penelope copied down the numbers and began her calculations. SPOILER!!: notes Penelope looked over her work to check for mistakes. Everything looked good to her. The second number had two karmic debt numbers in it. That was not a good sign. Anyone who had two karmic debt numbers in their phone number should get a new number. What were they doing for the muggle studies portion of the lesson? |

I'd say the first and third house would be a pretty good buy. That second house, though? Whoever is wanting to buy that should just steer clear. With the two Karmic Debt numbers, I think it's too much of a gamble. Kate listened as the professor told them the locations relating to the three numbers. She didn't live in America, but if she did, she'd tell everybody she knew not to run for president. Mmkay, so Muggle Studies now. Kate turned her attention from Tanner to Moxley and waited. Text Cut: Moxley Kate wasn't at school for the first lesson, so she just took the professor's word for all of that. She looked toward the cell phone, an object she'd seen and knew all about but never owned. Raising her hand, she said, "There's a lot of features on that phone that help Muggles do things that we can do with magic," she said. "For example, they can send a text message to each other, which is about the same as an owl message or howler." |
Adi nodded at Tanner. Yep, she had cleared that up for him. Double Karmic numbers were baaaaaad. But then imagine if there happaened to be a third Karmic number there O__O Gosh! Anyway, he scribbled down some more notes and added the names of the places where the telephone numbers belonged. The Sydney Opera House was the coolest, by the way. And off they went to Moxley! Adi chuckled a bit. Yeah, he had totally been concentrating on making a mental note to calculate his future house's number that he forgot about his current house's and personal cell phone, the one he mainly used to stay in touch with AJ over the summer. He turned his attention to the phone in the picture. Oh, hey! It was one similar to his! The Hufflepuff raised his hand. "We can store a ton of music on them, Professor. Other stuff can be stored too like pictures, soft copies of books either on the phones itself or in a chip called the Micro SD chip.'' Adi's own phone held mostly music and pictures and he had to get this chip with a great deal of storage because of that. Hehe. |
Norah paused before leaning over her notes again to send a grin in Sophie's direction. Every time she thought Sophie Brown had proven she was the smartest person in the history of the universe, she just got even smarter. She wasn't even entirely sure where the sixth year even KEPT all that knowledge. Maybe her head was considerably roomier inside or something 'cause there was no way her brain could the same size as Norah's. That wouldn't make any sense at all. By the time she'd finished a) admiring Sophie Brown and b) writing down all the new information, the fourth year noticed she'd fallen behind in the calculations. Uh. OOPS. Flipping quickly to the correct page in the textbook, she began to scribble some reductions on her parchment, brow furrowed. SPOILER!!: calculations A cellular phone. She'd seen those before, uh huh. This was the bestest part about the subject (besides the professor, DUH). She had actually seen the stuff being taught as opposed to Runes or something that nobody has seen in a million billion years. Putting a hand in the air, she gave the professor a big smile. "some cellular phones have cameras on them, but not the film kind" They'd learned about the film kind in muggle studies one time but she'd forgotten what year it was. Whatever. That was what her dad would call a thoroughly useless piece of information which Norah didn't think was very fair because who was he to judge what's useful or not? That was just mean to the words. Ahem. What was she talking about? "And you can take lots of pictures of stuff and see them right away! Emphasis on LOTS of pictures. Heheehhe. Heh. |
SPOILER!!: Tanner Whoops. It was hard to concentrate when there was tacos on the brain. Really, the fourth year could go for just about anything other than veggies. Just throwing that out there. A floating piece of parchment did not go unnoticed. Nope. What was that all about? Before she worried too much about that, she needed to finish her work before she very really behind. SPOILER!!: work They were moving on to Muggle Studies now. Oh, this was going to be fun. Moxley would make sure of it. Ohhhh... cellphones. AJ knew loads about them because she had one of her own. People were saying some cool things about them, but AJ still had something else to add. "There's apps where you can see each other WHILE you talk." Pretty cool, eh? Unless you were talking to someone you didn't particularly like. Wouldn't want them seeing your eye rolls and ugly faces. Or maybe that would just make the little conversation interesting. AJ was a glass half full kind of girl. |
Oh. She was supposed to elaborate further? Lux had assumed it was enough to merely write that the Karmic Debts existed. Oops. Sorry, Professor. Nodding, she jotted down more information in her notes: Quote:
As Professor Tanner wrapped up her portion, Lux listened carefully. Then it was Moxley's turn. They were going to talk about cellphones. Awesome. They were much more modern then the ancient phones they had worked with for the homework. Raising her hand, she said, "You can choose the ringtone on a cell phone so that it plays the song you want it to when someone calls you!" Pretty cool in her opinion. |
Caleb didn't know a whole lot about cell phones other than the fact that kids seemed to use them for anything BUT making calls. Still, he raised his hand, ready to contribute something to the conversation. "Cell phones use satellites up in space to make calls. And do anything, really - if the satellites were ever to go down the whole world would come to a standstill," he explained. |
Janelle smiled when Professor Tanner compared her to Jasmine. Having an overachieving big sister was a blessing and a curse. Her sister was definitely a hard act to follow. Anytime Janelle could live up to her high standards, it was a good thing. And, finally the location of the phone numbers was revealed. It was the White House. Janelle had guessed right. Now she was anxious to reduce her home phone number to see if it was OK. Hopefully there was some positive karmic vibe attached to it. Before Janelle knew it, Arithmancy was over and it was time for Muggle Studies. The first question had to do with a muggle cell phone. She listened to the answers given by her classmates and raised her hand. "You can send and receive email from a cell phone." That was handy as another way to communicate with others. If you couldn't talk to a person and your message was too long to text, you could send them an email........from anywhere......with your cell phone. |
Right on the money, Miss Brown. The words were like music to her ears and Sophie simply smiled gratefully in reply to the compliment - AND Norah's smile got returned, too. Zeke's notes WERE awfully good AND right on the money, too, with his guesses. His synopsis was pretty impressive, and Sophie was surprised the Gryffindor didn't get points for how well thought-out his guesses were and how nicely they correlated with the places those numbers actually represented. Gryffindors, though. They didn't need extra points anyhow. Tanner knew which house needed the help, and Soph was thankful for that. Moving on to Muggle Studies, though, hm? The sixth year was a little disappointed, as the topic of karmic debts was actually quite fascinating - but CELLULAR PHONES. Sophie's WHOLE demeanor changed - her eyes grew big, a smile spread across her face, and she straightened up in her chair considerably before shooting Tobes a MASSIVE grin. She knew all about these because of HIM. Raising a hand, Sophie offered cheekily, "Instead of buttons and stuff, there's a SCREEN where you press the GLASS ITSELF and it senses your touch and THAT'S how you make it work, that's how it's different from the kinda phone you had us working on before. BUT not all cell phones were always like that, 'cause I know there are some that do have actual buttons that you press, too. But on one like that," the one on the board, "there are no buttons besides ones on like the side, and it's super cool." Boom. Nailed it. THANKS, TOBES. |
Toby always always always loved it when people found the positives in stuff, because that was what HE liked to do and all. He smiled at Professor Tanner when she remarked on his work, even though he'd made a mistake... because he'd caught the mistake. It took a lot of effort and hard work for him to be extra careful, and it always made him happy when his professors appreciated that. "Thank you, Professor," he replied, the smile remaining on his face even when Tanner moved onto check Soph's work next. There was more talk about... other things for a few minutes. All that sort of brainy stuff that always had Toby slightly confused when it came to this lesson. He tried to listen to what was being said, but mostly the information just sort of washed over him. That... was going on the ever-growing list of things he'd need to do extra reading about later. Oh, NEWT study. It haunted him. BUT!!! They were moving on, and as difficult as Toby found Arithmancy, he was always pretty confident in Muggle Studies on account of his upbringing. And as soon as Moxley's part of the lesson started, he was relieved to discover that they would be talking about something he at least knew a little bit about. He raised his hand to contribute. "Those phones, smart phones they're usually called 'cause they can do a load of smart stuff, well... they can do almost anything. It's like holding the entire world in your hand," Toby said twirling his quill as he spoke, suddenly very animated. "You can do all sorts with them, so like... it's like phone calls aren't really the main function for them anymore, but they're still called a phone and everything. You can get internet on them, which is this whole thing, which means that wherever you are, as long as you have a phone and the internet, you can look up almost any information or pictures or whatever and you'll usually find it. The world in your hand, y'know?" And MUCH MORE, but... Toby managed to control himself and shut up after that, so there were things left for other people to say and all. |
Desiree understood Arithmancy. Numbers, order, patterns, all that. Just as she was beginning to get into Karmic numbers and enjoy the simple satisfaction of writing down the problems and doing the calculations (however basic they may be) it was time to move on. SPOILER!!: Notes Right, this was a joint lesson. Muggle Studies, hence the muggle phone numbers. And the picture of a cell phone professor Moxley was showing the class. Desiree was pretty familiar with it, her parents had a few muggle friends after all and communicating by owl wasn't exaclty an option. If they wanted to keep those friends, at least. Really, cell phones were more practical than owls for a lot of reasons.. text messages and calls were instant, owls have to fly however long you've sent them, 'then' fly back to see what they've replied. Also cell phones are never temperamental and don't pester you for treats.. She loved her owl though, really. And of course letters had a certain charm to them. Most of it had been covered but she raised her hand anyway, she'd been a little too quiet this class, "Besides being able to communicate instantly there are probably thousands of apps you can put on your phone to do almost anything, games, music, weather, there's even a built in compass" which she won't need if she ends up getting the moving tattoo she's been thinking about.. "that's what most of those squares represent on the screen." a little obvious maybe, but some people might not know. Her parents had been baffled by it; her dad was too proud to ask for help and just silently struggled along. Even now he only uses it to take calls and play chess. Wizard chess makes him anxious in his old age, or so he says. Her mom graciously accepted defeat at the muggle technology and Desiree had been happy to assist. |
Ummm. Eden was doing her best. She thought it was pretty cool about the phone numbers. She'd have to check her cell phone number AND her mother's number, because she was so curious about it! And then...Eden squinted up at the picture. Heh. She raised her hand. "Well...cell phones work with like...waves. In the air, I think. or something like that. Radio waves?" She had no honest-to-God idea, lulz, but she thought she'd read that somewhere. Science. Science was interesting, but SO not Eden's thing, much like NUMBERS. |
SPOILER!!: Professor Tanner Zeke payed close attention, first to the answer to Adi's question, secondly to their locations - which he scribbled down quickly but neatly enough so that he could read it later, and then... there was that. HIS WORK WAS GOING ON THE BOARD? ... He may have been blushing. Meaning, that his face had a very definite tinge of red to his cheeks. Those were HIS answers... did people have to see them? Did they? The only comfort he found in this action was that the Professor wouldn't have put up his answers if they had been incorrect. Right? RIGHT? And actually, the whole CHANGE thing, and the abuse of power thing too made so much sense now that he knew it was he American Presidency place. Neat. Numbers really could tell you EVERYTHING. SPOILER!!: Professor Moxley And now they were back to phones. HE SAW THE CONNECTION! ... And smart phones, he'd seen them, heard of them, but never held one... he wondered what that would be like. Hand up, he added his two knuts. "Professor, I heard that there was a function where you could give it voice commands or ask it questions and it would do things for you and talk back... and ... it has maps, and can tell you where to go, but that's a different function." Similar, but not. |
SPOILER!!: Arithmancy catch up! Zhenya's face smoothed out from concentration as Professor Moxley took the stage. Zhenya didn't have a telephone at home though, thank Merlin. She could barely use the telephone for the Muggle Studies homework, how would she be able to use one at home without instructions? Yes, she remembered Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the telephone. Although she still didn't think the telephones they did their homework on were ancient. They looked very high tech, which she would have thought only technical minded people could use them without the instructions. Thank Merlin for the instructions Professor Moxley had given them. Landline, she knew that meant within the home. But what was a cellular phone? Zhenya had a look at the photo Professor Moxley put up, and her mind was blank. Cellular... cellular... Zhenya raised her hand rather sheepishly, "Err... a cellular phone contains cells?" she guessed. |
Okay so his answer to the possible owner of the number may have been close and accepted by the professor, but that didn't mean he didn't become lost as things went on. It was cool however to realize who the given number really was connected to. The muggle minister....who would have thought? Then the numbers started to swim, especially as he worked on reductions, so he opted to remain quiet at the moment. Too many things to think of at one time. And to make matters more complicated they were switching to the muggle studies portion of the class. Yep...Benny was just going to sit here quietly and listen. Listen and take notes. Seemed the safe thing to do for the time being. |
Sensing touch? Apps? The whole world would come to a standstill...cells? Were these types of phones alive somehow? They sounded at least semi-sentient to Cutty. Semi-sentient. These things seemed to be part wand, part owl, part chess board, and partly protean charmed. They were like little distraction boxes and he began to wonder the nature of the muggle mind. It must have been scattered or in constant need. Or else the phones probably demanded much of them. In fact, they probably... "Professor, due to the sheer amount of distraction these...things provide, they probably require careful attention to use whilst doing anything important. Like flyin' on yer broom or in yer cars if yer muggle." Cutty hadn't put away his Arithmancy book. it was soothing to him. |
He already knew it but now he knew for sure. Arithmancy was not his thing. He gave AJ a quick thank you for helping him out earlier and then pretended to work on the next questions. Finally, luckily, the Muggle Studies Professor began to speak and he let out a sigh of relief because that meant Arithmancy was over. His expression changed completely. At first he looked unsure and tried to make himself small which wouldn’t work because he was pretty tall. But now he looked more confident and sat upright on his chair. A picture of a cellphone appeared and Yoongi stopped making notes to look at it. “There are no buttons” he said |
SPOILER!!: Individual Responses and Feedback Once all the answers were in, Moxley stopped her bouncing and grinned at the class as a whole. She was pretty pleased with the responses, did they know? ”Excellent job, you guys! You were spot-on with your answers and I’d like to touch on a few of those in a bit more details. First off, how cell phones work.” Moxley paused, allowing anyone who was taking notes to get ready or flip to a fresh page. Cellular phones, which are phones that allow you to make phone calls outside your home, turn your voice into a kind of electricity. This electricity is something called an RF wave and this wave carries your voice in the air and to something called a cell tower.” Moxley paused, not wanting to rush through this so everyone could get a clear picture of the process. ”Once your voice reaches the cell tower, the tower is able to send your voice, and the wave carrying it, to the person you’re calling.” That was the simplified version, anyway. ”Cell phones work much better when they’re near cell towers, for obvious reasons. The farther away you are from a cell tower, the harder it is to make your call.” Nodnod. ”Unless you’re using a satellite phone, like Mr. Newell mentioned.” Okay, they could take a moment or two to finish with notes and while they did, Moxley drew a picture on the board to show what she meant. Some people were visual learners, after all. "Now Mr. Fuller-Thompson made a good point when he said that these days, having a cell phone is like having the world in your hands. There is a wealth of information you can get right from your phone, a phone you keep with you wherever you are, most likely. That is certainly exciting, as you can do research, play games, listen to music, and stay connected to others!" Brilliant, right? Only there were some drawbacks. "However as Mr. Mordaunt pointed out, having all these things at your fingertips all the time can be a huge distraction." They got that, yes? Moxley paused again, allowing adequate time for notes and knowledge absorption. "With this in mind, can anyone tell me some of the negatives of using a cell phone as your main source of communication?" Perhaps landline phones weren't so bad after all, hm? |
Huzzaaahhh! He was winning. And then there was all the other discussions and talks of towers and things like that. He knew how they worked, more or less, and thankfully that was all he was expected to understand. There was none of that intricate detail that only an engineer would know. Nope, this is reasonable. And what were the negatives of cell phones? Welllllll.... there were many. Hand raised, he answered with ONE of his many many ideas. "You need to keep it charged, Professor. Because once the battery goes flat then it's dead and you can't use it anymore. And the more you use it the quicker it runs out." |
Yeah, she was so not taking notes because she came from an all muggle family, duh! All of this info was stored right in her handy dandy brain. Okay, even she had to admit that she didn't know about those RF waves, but that was just technical mumbo jumbo that nobody really cared about. She got the gist of things and that was what mattered. Negative things about cellphones? Hmm... that was kind of tough because AJ thought they were really awesome. "You can get mad addicted to some of the cool stuff on there and next thing you know you are walking into poles because you just can't tear yourself away." That was a serious problem. |
*blink* HAHAHAHAHA! Zhneya's answer though! Adi didn't laugh right out loud but a little bit did escape. Was his friend being funny on purpose? He knew she didn't know much about Muggles but still... it was hilarious, yo! Anwhooo, Moxley did appreciate his answer so he happily bent his head to make notes. Not that he needed to make much because he knew a ton about this stuff. Next question! The Puffer raised his hand again. "They can be difficult to maintain financially. So the more dependent you are on them, the more you'll have to pay to buy data or minutes or text messages.'' Er... that sounded like him over the summer except he never really cared how many dollars he had to spend because his phone was never used any other time of year. |
OOOOH Caleb totally knew the answer to this. It was the biggest glaring problem in the whole world, in his mind, mainly because people who had no social skills were a huge pet peeve of his. He raised his hand eagerly. "Because people can text instead of call, people literally have NO idea how to talk on the phone. Or to people in general. I've seen kids who send emails and stuff to PROFESSIONALS and they spell "your" like "UR" and it's just sad," he explained. "Basically, kids are missing that step where they learn important social skills because it's less work and effort to just send a text." He could really go on for a while with this. IT DROVE HIM NUTS. |
It didn't take someone with excellent observation skills to see the way that Tobias sat up a little straighter in his seat and even puffed his chest out a little bit at Moxley's response to his answer. It felt good, the praise. Even better when she mentioned his answer again when addressing the entire class. Ego boost. Mood boost. Yes yes yes. ... No. Because now they were talking about the NEGATIVES and Toby DID NOT DO NEGATIVITY SO??????????????? He deflated visibly, and twirled his quill around his fingers a couple of times while he chewed at his lip. Eventually, though, Toby did raise his hand. "They're fragile. Sometimes they break super easily at the slightest drop, or the screens smash, or water gets to them... something like that, y'know?" That was the best he could do without going all super negative. Now they could move back on to positive things again, yes? |
