| | Arithmancy Lesson 2: Good Karma, Bad Karma OOC: For the sake of timeline ease, let's say this lesson is occurring BEFORE all the acromantulas attacking the castle. Spring had finally arrived in Scotland, and with it came warmer weather. Though it was currently raining outside, it was a warm rain, and if you looked carefully you could probably spot some denizens of Hogwarts out for a stroll in the light shower. Other than the extra lights Professor Tanner employed to combat the gloomy weather, there isn't much different about the room that would give a hint as to the day's activities. The abundance of cobwebs seen around the castle, however, is not as bad in this room, as Tiara arrived early to clean up as much as possible.
Professor Tanner, dressed in summery mustard-yellow robes, stands at the front of the room ready to greet her eager Arithmancers as they enter. |

Kate's turn again! She just hoped her next roll was a little more exciting than heading forward just to end up on a blank space. At least she hadn't moved forward, but she at least hoped she could get some good karma and really advance in the game! Kate grabbed a hold of the die and gave it a roll. One.
That was IT?! She only got to move forward one space?
With a frown she couldn't help but have, Kate stepped forward one, lonely space. She was just on the fifth space. If this game really counted, she'd have a really bad chance at winning it. Winning wasn't even what she wanted to do, though. She just wanted to land on something that would let her draw a karma card, and when she did, she hoped it would be good karma!
She sighed and turned toward the next person in line. Your turn.

Wheeeee!
Another roll for himself!
SHAAAAAAAKE THE DIE!
After that, the Hufflepuff dropped the die to watch it roll to a two. Cool! Another ittle baby number. One step, two steps from thirty four to thirty six. He found himself standing in ANOTHER yellow square. Yaaaaay! 'What sorcery is this?' wonders his RPer. This meant he could hop up ten steps to forty six.
Ohhhh! An orange coded square. Adi grabbed the corresponding card. Man! Move back thirteen squares! The evil RPer rejoices at this point. He counted out his thirteen squares as he walked backwards, eventually stopping on thirty three.

Toby had been trying to reach that dice for a minute now, and probably holding everyone up in the process, but he was DETERMINED to reach it without using magic or totally leaving his square. No idea why, just... was.
And that was why he was stretched across the 'game board' on his tummy, his toes still in his square as he reached for the blue ten-sided dice and happily waved away any offers of help or another dice. No no, he was fine, he almost... almost... AHA! Got it. Toby grinned triumphantly to himself as he straighten back up again in his square and dusted himself off and ROLLED THE DICE.
He had to squint a little, but Toby soon saw that he'd rolled another three. THROWBACK TO HIS FIRST ROLL OF THE GAME! Beaming, he moved along three squares, rounding another 'corner' of the board and technically ending up in a square next to the one he'd just come from.
This was fun. Toby liked this game. But still no Karma! Not like Adi. He seemed to be rolling in Karma today.

After the questions had been answered, the professor revealed what they were going to do next. Ooooh, they were going to play a game. Janelle got excited when she saw the game board appear on the floor. She listened as Professor Tanner explained the rules. It seemed pretty straightforward. At least she hoped that it was.
Janelle walked toward the start square and joined the line of students who were ready to begin the game. She waited until it was her turn, then she picked up the die. Giving it a good roll, Janelle looked to see what number it landed on . Four. Walking forward four spaces, she looked down at space beneath her. No Karma card there. She guessed that she'd just have to wait for her turn to come around again and see what happened.

Standing on the number five, Kate picked up the die and rolled again. Five. At least she got to move forward more than just a few squares this time, and she was still holding out for landing on something exciting. She'd even kind of take a bad karma card at this point. She'd been watching the others, and she knew the bad karma cards made you move backwards instead of forwards. Kate was just tired of moving forward and landing on a boring, blank square.
She moved forward five steps and looked down. Nothing. Kate had landed on another blank square, her third in a row. Karma either really, really liked her, or it wanted nothing to do with her. She couldn't decide which just yet. Maybe the turns in line could circle through quickly, and she'd get another turn soon. For now, it was somebody's else's go.

When it was her turn again, Janelle gave the die an enthusiastic roll. Maybe she rolled it a little too far, but she was rewarded with a six. Counting off the spaces, she began to walk forward. One, two, three, four, five, six. OK now what? She had landed on the same space as Kate. Were you even allowed to have two people on the same space? Was this like Sorry where one person got bumped back to start?
Since they hadn't been told otherwise, Janelle guessed that it was OK to share the space. Looking at her housemate, she gave her a little wave. Then she noticed that the number 10 square was blank. Hopefully she would land on a karma space next time. For now, Janelle prepared to take her next turn.

Again, it was Toby's turn. He'd just been counting how many spaces he needed to reach before getting to the end when he suddenly realised he was holding the game up again. Abandoning his eyeing of the many different coloured spaces, Toby took the dice and this time tossed it right up in the air with a bit of a spin to it, then backed out of the way as it dropped back to the floor.
It bounced, span some more, bounced again, losing height every time, until finally it rolled and Toby could see the little number SEVEN etched into it. So ONWARDS HE WENT, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven spaces, until he stopped on square thirty.
STILL no karma! Yet he'd stopped on one of the two squares right between an orange one and a yellow one. How funny it would be if he went through the entire game sequence in the most straightforward way ever, never achieving either good karma or bad. Funny, but he sort of WANTED to hit a karma square, to amp up the EXCITEMENT!

As Kate waited for her turn, she impatiently shifted her weight from one foot to the other. Surely this game had to get better for her than this! She was barely moving forward and had so far landed on nothing but empty spaces. She guessed she should be grateful she hadn't had to move all the way back to the beginning.
Soon it was her turn again, and she rolled a number eight, which meant she moved forward eight spaces. Kate stepped forward until she was on the eighteenth space...
...A KARMA CARD!!!
Finally! Kate was so excited about landing on something other than a blank space that she almost cheered as she picked up her karma card. Her karma number was fourteen, and as she expected, it was bad karma. Now he had to move back fourteen spaces.
Number four, here she comes!

Adi waited for his turn again, passing the time obviously watching the others. Not much of them seemed to be encountering the Karma squares. And then, it was finally his turn again. Yay! He was loving this game!
Shake and rooooll the die!
NINE!
Adi took off, counting the squares as he went. He ended up on forty two. Woohoo! Too bad he just missed the yellow karma square.

Tiara was really enjoying watching the students react to their rolls. And some of them even amused her in the actual process of taking the rolls, such as Tobias getting down on the ground to reach the die. "You are allowed to leave your square if you need to, Tobias!" she reassured him, laughing the whole time. Then there seemed to be a question of sharing spaces. "Yes, sharing spaces is definitely allowed, ladies." Actually, to be truthful, she hadn't thought about that happening and didn't have a rule for it. But they didn't need to know that, right? OOC: You still have two days, keep going!

Maggie beamed – the earlier feeling of annoyance about the rain all forgotten – when she looked down at the dice she'd just rolled. TAKE THAT!! BAM!!!!
She was coming for Adi. Or well, first she was coming for Toby.
Once she was standing on the 26-space Maggie tried to lean forward to poke the Hufflepuff in the back. But sadly she was too short. So she just wobbled on the spot for a moment, waiting for her next turn.
This game was a lot better than learning about karma. |

Man, some people were really getting lucky while she was still on the first row of the gameboard. The lion wasn't one to ever give up hope, but it wasn't looking all that great for her. Positive vibes. She didn't always have to be first. Yeah, right...
Oh, it was her turn again. Big numbers. Big numbers. Shake, shake, shake. She was imagining a ten. Plop went the dice on the floor. A two. Another stinking two. AJ moved up the two spaces and was bummed to see that there weren't any karma cards for her to pick up.
Looking around it seemed like she was in last place. Oh well. There was still plenty of time left to turn her luck around. All she needed was somebody to get a bad karma card and she would be back in the game. Wow. That wasn't very nice of her at all.

Oh, looky! Maggie and Toby were catching up! Not that Adi really minded though wining WOULD be nice. He liked winning. Yes, he did but not so much as to go crazy but it was safe to say his competitiveness was up right about now. Also, hiiiii, AJ baby waaaay back on the first row. Hehe. The Puffer knew she must hate being there.
Anyway, shake and roll!
Threeeee!
One, two, three steps!
Adi stepped happily onto square forty five. Oh man! Thank goodness he hadn't rolled a four! The evil RPer wanted to wait until someone else posted before she did to move four paces but she has other things to do for a while after this post. Okay, who was next?

She rolled the dice and sort of bounced on the spot, hoping for it to be a 5. Because that would mean she'd end up on ANOTHER yellow Karma square. And she totally deserved that you know. She had awesome karma. She deserved all the good things in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD. ALL OF TH-
It was a four.
With a sigh, she frowned and then moved forward until she was standing on the space with the big thirty on it (imagine being that old!!! THE HORROR!!!). Only someone else was already there. Toby. Okay, good. At least it was a Hufflepuff. And Toby too. They were nice. They would let her have more room than was technically half, right? Yes.
At least that's what she was counting on when she squeezed in next to him. |

It was her turn again and Janelle was ready. She retrieved the die and spun it her hand. Blowing on it for good luck she gave the die a roll. Five. Janelle moved five spaces and stopped on the designated square. She missed a karma card by one space. Man. Janelle really, really wanted a karma card. Hopefully it would be a good one. She would not want to go backward.
Now that Janelle was finished with her turn, she looked around to see how her classmates were fairing with the game. That was was entertainment in itself. She would keep herself amused by checking out their antics until her next turn came along. Hopefully she would roll a good number and get that elusive karma card.

Well yeeeaahhhhh, sure they were allowed to leave their spaces, but it was SUPER FUN to do things this way, wasn't it? Toby thought so. Nevertheless, he beamed at Professor Tanner. "Okay, cool. Got it!" But she'd LAUGHED which meant his way was funny, and good. He liked making people laugh.
Oh. OH. HEY. MAGGIE WAS HERE ON HIS SQUARE. Toby budged up a little to make room, and gave her a grin and a wave, but then it was already his go again. AND he had a dice to hand already so that he didn't have to go squirming around on his belly like a weird but awesome snake. He shook the dice in his cupped hands... shook it... shoooooook it... still shaking it... a little more for good measure... annnnnnnnnnnd some more... and ROLLED.
SIX! And onwards he went! (After another wave to Maggie.)
Right onto square thirty-six, and... GASSSPPPPP! HIS FIRST KARMA CARD! So exciting. Even MORE exciting was that it was GOOD KARMA! Ten spaces forward it was, then!
... And then... MORE karma? Man, this was like waiting for a bus and then a whole ton came along, except when Toby drew the card, it was telling him to go right back again, because it was BAD karma. All work and no play. That didn't sound like him at all.
That was so sad. Bad karma. BUT!!! It didn't really matter because even though it was telling him to go back again, he'd still moved forwards from the very start of his turn AND the start of the game in general, and progress was still progress, even if you did end up going backwards a little bit. A lesson he should probably learn to apply to his life one day.
So back Toby went, ending up on square thirty-three, right near Maggie once more. He waved yet again. Hello friend!

Kate was basically back at the beginning now, which made her even more grateful than ever before that this wasn't a real race. What kind of grade would she get if this counted toward your class credit? Not a very good one, she knew, because if the game ended now, she'd have a grand total of four points.
...but not for long!
It was Kate's turn again, which meant she had the chance to advance in the game! She picked up the die and gave it a good roll. Seven.
Kate moved forward seven spaces, counting them off in a whisper as she moved along. She finally ended up on space eleven, which was a blank space. She was finally feeling thankful for them, because that last karma card had gotten her all the way back to the beginning of the game board. Well, pretty much.
Okay. Somebody else's turn.

Ohhh... people were moving back. This meant that she had the opportunity not to be in last place anymore. Well, hopefully. AJ eyed the die as if to communicate 'no funny business' to it. Or at the very least please give her a big number. Something that she could work with would be greatly appreciated.
Her turn. EEP. Okay. She took the die and shook it three times in her hands. Three was a magical number, yeah? Or maybe not. No time to worry about that now though because the die was falling to the ground.
EIGHT. She could work with eight. AJ moved ahead eight spaces. There still wasn't anything special for her to do, and boy was she itching to get to pick up a card. With her luck though it would be a bad karma card, and she would have to move back some spaces. The lion hopped around in her square waiting not so patiently for her turn again.

Angel was waiting and waiting and waiting, it felt like she had been waiting months but it probably wasn't that long but this game looked awesome and she wanted a go.
Angel finally got her go and now here she goes, Angel suddenly rolled the dice and got a six... that was amazing and now she moved six places and waited there, she wanted to get a karma card soon but she would have to wait and see if that would happen.

AJ was practically drooling over the karma cards, and wondered if this turn would be THE turn. Finally, it was time for her to have another go at it. Taking the die, she shook it as if her life depended on it. Come on. Make mama happy.
BLOOP!
Blink. Blink.
Was that....
A TEN. WOOT. This was the biggest number you could get and she had managed to roll it. Simply walking forward would not be enough. Oh no. That just wouldn't do it justice.
AJ moved forward like she was doing a hop scotch. She hopped on one foot, and then both feet all the way until she reached her destination on spot number twenty two. Did you hear that, people? Twenty two. She was getting somewhere, she was. No karma card? Bummer. It was going to happen before this game was over.

WOOT!
It was Adi's turn again! He grabbed the die, gave it a hearty shake only to have it land on... one. "Drat!'' Why couldn't it have been a higher number? Preferably one that would allow him a yellow Karma card? His RPer is all 'woohoo' over here, by the way. With a 'hmph' to himself, the Hufflepuff moved down back to thirty three. Yea, yeah. He had gotten an orangy spot so he didn't bother moving up that one spot.
That forty sixth square was a JINX for him! "Professor, number forty six hates me,'' he complained, not at all amused. Ali the RPer evil laughs here. Mwahahahaha! *has a slight choking fit afterward*

Angel realised that it was her turn again, Angel rolled again and got a three this was so funny, she wasn't good at games in fact when she was seven monopoly wasn't a good game for her because her look was just out.
Angel went and moved three places, she was going to get this down eventually, she didn't want a single karma card, she wanted to avoid them because knowing her luck at the minute she would just end up with bad karma all the time. Em: Angel actually rolled a two. *whistles*

When his turn came again Adi gave a REALLY hearty shake before letting the die roll. He watched it flip and dance around before coming to as rest on three. The Hufflepuff EYED the board. Three would take him up to thirty six which would give him a yellow card to forty six then back to thirty three.
AGAIN?! "Right. I guess I'm staying here then,'' the Hufflepuff said a bit sulkily. There would be no need for him to waste his time going up and down the board. Was Tanner seeing this? She must be finding his situation funny. This was the THIRD time he was stuck at thirty three. Ali: ... |

Maggie waved back, then watched the others take their turns. Adi was like waaaaaay ahead. Sort of. That is until he had to go BACK you know. KARMA!!!!! He'd probably done some regrettable things in his life so that's why he ended up having to go back.
When it was her turn again, Maggie rolled the dice and....got four. Again.
Wait....hang on.....OMG SHE WAS IN THE LEAD OMG!
Skipping forward and passing both Toby and Adi, she grinned at them and then came to stand on the 34 square.

Angel was totally enjoying this game even if she was taking forever to get too the end, she didn't care it w.s one step at a time for her and if she could she was totally not having a card, was it possible to get across the board without getting one, she was tots hoping it was.
Angel rolled the dice when it was her turn and smiled when she got a five how awesome another square without a card on, she would just have to hope her luck continued, she wanted to get to the end without so much as picking up a card. She moved up the five places.
