Galdrs were nothing new to Lux, so she had expected some convoluted chanting to be part of the lesson. The use of more than one rune for activation was new to her, however.

Staring at the board she tried her best to commit the galdr to memory. " sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." A deep breath and then another go at it. " sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r."

Lux repeatedly chanted the galdr until she felt confident enough to try it out on her piece of wood. She really didn't want to mess up this part of the activity when she was doing so well. As a test to her knowledge, she wrote the chant down in her notes without looking at the board for assistance. It took a few tries, but eventually she got it perfect.

Norah moved her glowing plank to the side to make way for her parchment again. Better known as her DOOM. DUN DUN DUN. Really though, if only this whole chant thing was just 'dun dun dun' and not aaaallll those 'r' sounds 'cause that would be a whole lot easier to handle. Who decided on these chants, anyways? She'd need to have a good, stern talk with whoever it was because they clearly didn't have her best interest at heart. That was just MEAN.

She recorded the chant below the drawings in her notes, glancing up at the board at least eighty million times to make sure she had it all right. After a while all the letters just started to look the same, y'know? It was like those ancient rune dudes WANTED her to fail this class. Resisting the urge to just doodle the rest of the class away, she began to read the chant off the parchment. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." Was that the right amount of repetitions? She squinted at the parchment before repeating again. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r. Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." She paused again to swallow hard. This thing was even making her TONGUE feel funny. That many 'r' sounds should be against the law. See? This was why she needed to be queen of the world.

Ugh, she felt so conspicuous doing her chanting. Dot hunched over her wooden plank and wand, shoulders up around her ears, and hoped that no one was paying her any mind. She just needed to trace carefully over her bindrunes and say the incantation at the same time.

And ignore the fact that she felt like a dork.

"Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r. Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." Dot traced once. Twice. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." And a third time. How was she supposed to tell if it worked again?

This was the part of Ancient Runes Kate thought was kind of weird. She got that the chanting was a vital part of the whole process, but she always felt a little silly saying it. She guessed that was because the whole thing seemed like it was made up of...well, made-up words. She looked down at her wood, the runes still glowing. She had thought the glowing meant it WAS turned on, but she guessed not.

Mmkay, so what was that chant again?

"sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r," Kate said, but this was just practice. Those were a lot of different, unfamiliar words to say, and she didn't want to mess up all the hard work she'd done on her wood. "sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r."

Okay, time to chant for real and activate those runes.

Adi sat watching randomly at his classmates as they finished up their work, his eyes flicking from Henric to Ilia. He was going to get to the bottom of whatever was up with those two. Uh huh. But Botros was speaking again so his eyes shifted to the elderly man.

He started making notes again. The notes about invoking, right intention and what not. Adi knew before Botros even spoke about galdrs that was what he was referring to. Gosh, these things could be so difficult for him sometimes! But yeah, Professor Head of House was right... it WAS like singing in a foreign language. The Puff copied down the galdr before starting the chanting.

''Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, sa si- noooo, that's not it!'' Merlin! The night mare was beginning already! "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si si sa-'' Hmph. Still saying the wrong things, he was. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r!'' PHEW! There he had gotten it this time. It took a great deal of more practice but eventually Adi got the galdr completely right. NOW he was ready to point his want and repeat that at the bindrunes.

Zhenya was following Professor Botros' words; they carved the healing runes with magic of their own, but now they had to activate that magic.

That was certainly a mouthful, but thankfully Professor Botros was going to practice with them. Zhenya opened her mouth to start practicing the Galdr as Professor Botros had. "sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r," she said, then again, because the last bit still felt a bit foreign for her to comfortably put it all together. "sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r," then just the last bit; "su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r," she finished, nodding. Right, well with that done, she didn't think practicing the pointing of her wand was really necessary to practice, seeing as she could point it almost as good as she could walk, being an extension of her hand and all. She went over the chant a few more times in her head, having memorised Professor Botros' chanting. The memory would vanish soon, but for now it was lodged in there.

Okay.

Here goes nothing.

Lux pointed her wand at the bindrunes feeling pretty confident in her ability to say the correct galdr. It really helped to repeat the words over and over again and write them down; at least that seemed to be the method that worked best for her. Combining three runes made everything a little more complicated, but she was optimistic.

"sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." She chanted as she watched the runes to see when they would activate. "sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r...sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r."

Maybe the fourth time would do the trick?

Once she had felt around the words to be comfortable with them, it was time to actually do the spell to activate the magic of the runes. She put her wand in her hand and pointed it at the runes she had carved into the wood; the sowilo for healing, Jera for growth and Uruz for strength. What a nice combination of things for healing.

"sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r, sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r, sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r, sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r," she chanted, pointing her wand at the wood.

Ummm... how was she supposed to remember all of that and be able to chant it all together? That was a lot of R's okay. A LOT. AJ closed her eyes for a moment and listened to everybody else. Maybe this way would help her soak in all of the energy of those around her and she would memorize them. Merlin... she really was going crazy.

"Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." It actually wasn't so bad. You really just had to remember sowilo, jera, urux, and repeat those over and over. Make dinosaur like noises with the others and BAM. You were making magic.

"Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." Was she completely confident? Errr... not really, but this was going to be as good as it gets.

When Botros wrote the appropriate galdr up on the board, Toby copied it down. Then double checked it, triple checked it... made sure it was correct just one more time. He had pretty much all the regular galdrs memorised by this point (he'd managed that by fifth year, though always checked the textbook to make sure he was write), but the combined ones were different. They obviously didn't use them much, so there was less need to try and memorise them. Still, he could identify the familiar parts when they did go over them.

Toby practiced the galdr, as Professor Botros instructed, taking the time to make sure he could properly get his mouth to work the sounds he wasn't quite familiar with every day speech. But he knew them from other galdrs, so it wasn't long before he had it all covered. He looked at the runes carved into his board, and started the galdr again. With feeling intent, this time.

"Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r..." he eyed the runes, and the way they began to faintly glow, and continued chanting the galdr from the top, trying to focus on the intent of the charm as hard as he could. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo..."

Wand pointed at the bindrunes? CHECK!

One Hufflepuff set to correctly chant the Galdr? YUP!

"Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r... sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r rsowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r... sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r...''

The Rs, man. He liked the way his tongue rolled off those. Hehe

Uhhhh. How did one know if he had put enough of the right intent into this? Were the runes supposed to glow some more? Hmmm... Adi supposed it was best to ask the Professor. He stuck his hand up. "Professor, how do we know when these have been activated? Are they supposed to glow brighter?"

Hmm? "They should be glowing subtly from the carving spell you just applied to them so you wouldn't notice the new glowing," Botros replied kindly and focused on his own runes again. "We'll know if they work when we try to heal with them." They weren't credited depending on whether the charms worked or not, it was the effort that always mattered in this class.

Sowilo's healing, Jera's growth, Uruz's strength... Sowilo's healing, Jera's growth, Uruz's strength... Healing, strength, growth... Healing, strength, growth... Healing, strength, growth...

The runes were already glowing, but Toby wanted to keep going. Wanted to make sure the Healing Charm would be as strong as possible. He'd apparently decided to pour all his energy into this class today. As an outlet, or a distraction, just something productive and positive to focus on.

"Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz..." Toby took a quick breath. This was the fourth or fifth time he'd chanted the galdr, and he'd gotten a little carried away and sorta forgotten to breathe between the end of the last go round and the start of this one. Okay, he had oxygen, all was good. "... su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r... Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r..."

At last he stopped, and sat back again in his chair, eyeing the glowing runes with a pleased look on his face. Good. Yes. Good.

It was time to activate the runes. Janelle made sure that she had copied down all of the instructions, taking care to get the everything right. One small mistake and it would ruin everything. After checking and double checking her notes, she got to work.

Janelle always needed to practice the galdr before saying it for real. It could be tricky and she wanted to say everything correctly. She listened as Professor Botros chanted. He seemed to do it so easily. Of course, perfection came with practice and years of experience. She kept telling herself that the more she said the words, the better she would get at saying them. Following the professor's lead, Janelle began her practice chanting.

"Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r" That was definitely a tongue twister. Janelle repeated the incantation softly to herself, trying to get her tongue around the words and sounds. After several tries, it seemed to come a little easier........but not much. Janelle gave it a few more tries before pronouncing herself ready to begin.

Enough of the practicing... it was time to get these runes ready to heal. AJ pointed her at the bindrunes and tried to focus. She cleared her mind and thought only of her runes having super epic healing powers. Hers was going to heal better than anybody else's. She was THAT focused.

Okay. Now she just had to get the chant down right. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." AJ wouldn't be stopping there. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." In mid chant Adi asked a pretty good question. Oh, so they wouldn't actually grow brighter. Well, that kind of sucked. There was no way of knowing until you actually used them. How embarrassing would that be if she was all confident with her chest puffed out and nothing. Lame.

Once more time for good measure, AJ rolled the chant off of her tongue. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." She was confident she had done everything correctly.

It was time for the real deal. Janelle was almost ready, at least she thought she was. She pointed her wand at the runes on her block of wood. Then as usual, she took a moment focus her mind on the task at hand. When she felt ready, she began to chant.

"Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r. Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." Over and over Janelle repeated the chant, hoping to that she was pronouncing everything correctly. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r. Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." She kept at it and kept her ear open for the next set of instructions.

Angel was totally going to give this a go, she wanted to see how many r's she could roll because this chant had a lot of R's in it, seriously what was the person doing who made this up? had he started it of nice and normal and then suddenly the guy had walked on something that hurt his feet and he had gone ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR? and then by some miracle the objected had glowed and he had discovered healing with runes?

"Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r!" Angel tried to role her r's the first time but failed, s she just practiced that bit for a while. Once she was satisfied with it she tried again. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r!" Angel tried a few more times until she thought she was ready for the big test making it all work well together.

Keeping in mind that intention was vastly important for this to work, since Professor Botros said so, he raised his wand and pointed it at the bindrunes. There was already a faint light peeking from the cracks of the carving, showing that the Intaglio had worked. At least.

Chanting, of course, was more intimidating.

Clearing his throat several times, Gabe began lowly; in almost a mumble. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz..." His cheeks were pink with the effort of his focus. Was there such a thing as OVER focusing? Because...Gabe was probably guilty of this. "...su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r...."...and after the initial run, his mumble became slightly louder. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r...."

Technically speaking, how long were they supposed to keep this up? Scientific minds needed to know.

Galdrs were the worst part about runes for Sophie Brown, no doubt, so even though she knew it was coming... when Botros revealed it on the board and had them repeat it after him, she cringed. They weren't as difficult for her as they'd been a few years ago, but it was still a matter of... if she was chanting a galdr and messed up one part of the sequence, she had to start all over again.

So... she wasn't going to let that happen. No. Not today. She was a strong, capable, bright sixth year who could exceed even her own expectations with this.

She started with writing the galdr, copying it down to her notes from the blackboard: sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r. Realistically, it wasn't even that hard or long of a chant, so... full speed ahead, then.

"Sowilo sowilo sowilo," she started slowly, quietly, "jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz," there was some brief hesitation and she drew her wand closer to the block of wood as she checked her notes for reassurance, "su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r."

It made her mouth feel funny every time, and she was certain her mouth looked weird and choppy as she pronounced every syllable with determination.

.....Was he holding his wand right?

Continuing to overthink as good Ravenclaw would do, Gabe simply stared down at the wooden charm. Or...could it be deemed a charm as of right now? It was carved up, he'd been chanting. Did that technically give it 'charm'ness?

Needing to be completely certain, Gabriel attempted to focus all his energy on the bindrunes once more. A bit more chanting wouldn't hurt, yea? "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r...." Healing, growth, and strength....Healing, growth, and strength...."Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r...."....

Gabriel felt like he was performing ritualistic voodoo...oddly. Strange thought.

MORE WAND WAVING, HOWEVER!

The first go at the chant hadn't been terrible nor had she stuttered over any of it, so she continued on with a bit more confidence, her gaze still flickering back and both between the runes on the wooden block and her notes to make sure she got it down just right.

"Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r..." She spoke slowly, letting the galdr roll off her tongue with fluidity as she went. The only really taxing part was making sure she was saying the correct number of "u"s and "r"s, so she had to really concentrate hard on her parchment and nod her head along as her eyes followed each letter, but she managed it with success.

Gripping her wand a little tighter now, she continued, envisioning the runes' strength, growth, and healing combining to make one powerful runic charm, "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r... sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." She glanced up at Botros for his approval or any indication that they were far enough along to stop, and continued reciting the galdr as she did so.

If testing these was their homework... did that mean they were going to have to... get hurt? Or did Botros have some injured pygmy puffs for them to care for or something? Curious concept, and she kept working at the galdr to ensure that her homework would go over as seamlessly as possible.

His rune was kind of crooked and it wasn't perfect but the more he looked at it the more he was proud of it. Runic magic was no joke after all, it was really powerful and never to be dismissed. Not the rubbish runes he'd attempted in his OWLs, but generally they were very powerful and Benzi wanted to be good at them.

Especially since he heard that the DMLE uses them.

... Ah yes. Chanting. Easily his favourite part.

Trying to ignore how ridiculous he felt saying absolute nonsense, Benzi tried out the chant a few times to get the feel of it. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r........." Fun.

His r's didn't sound as good as the professor's though. That rolling thing he did was hard.

Oh right...they had to activate the runes now.

Ben remembered that from some other class but had forgotten that step. Not that it wasn't expected seeing as he had been having far too much on his mind as of late to focus on what had been shown previously, especially if it was far enough back in years. He watched as Professor Botros went and wrote what needed to be known about the further process on the board, the Gryffindor copying it down into his notes with what had already been shared for future reference.

Healing...growth...strength...a pretty good combination.

He listened to the chanting as well, unconsciously going over it in his own head. This is where it got tricky since sounded like a whole bunch of random sounds that had to be done and duplicated until proof of its successful activation was found. And one could easily have their tongue, lips or brain trips over itself and miss something that was needed down along the line of the process.

"Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera..." he started once he figured he was ready to begin. "...uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." And breathe. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r."

"Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r." Angel was confident now that she could say the full chant but was it going to work?

"Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r!!!!" Angel held her wand tightly as she started chanting. "Sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r!!!!" Angel continued as she thought about everything, though were they all going to injury each other if they were going to test this out?

Now that she'd practiced that super long chant and thought she had it all down pat word for word, Kate gripped her wand in her right hand and pointed it toward the bind runes. They were still glowing, indicating they'd been formed by magic, so all she had to do know was activate them.

She drew in a small breath and began. "sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r," she chanted. She held her wand steady, making sure to concentrate on it, too, and not just all the words in the chant. "sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r."

So was it done now? Kate didn't really know how to tell, but she decided to say the chant one more time for good measure. "sowilo sowilo sowilo, jera jera jera, uruz uruz uruz, su sa si se so, ju ja ji je jo, u u u u u u r r r r r r," she chanted.
