| | Ancient Runes Lesson II: Runic Charms The classroom was normally organized. Rows of desks for students with their nametags perched on them filled the classroom. A giant bookshelf was on the left side of the room with the few educational items thrown here and there that they rarely used. The blackboard was empty except for the title 'Runic Charms' written on top. Professor Botros was standing by the door to greet the students as usual, with the room heated to a higher degree than the rest of the castle. Someone had weak knees and faulty joints in the cold, let's not name names though.
Go in, take a seat and be prepared for a new funducational Runes lesson. ooc: - Class will start in the GMT afternoon today.
- Please familiarize yourself with the rules and guidelines for this class before posting. [] Class Progress:
[] Greetings + Runic Magic
[] Carving the runes
[] Activating the runes
[] Finalizing the charm |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Norah Kittredge Seventh Year | Lil' gooz | Sarangel | Junior Dweeb Norah fiddled with her quill and watched Proessor Botros with a slightly glazed look. No acting stuff out again STILL? That was the bestest class that had ever happened. Did he know? He was supposed to know everything, being a professor and all, but it didn't seem like he really knew that she knew he'd mentioned Odin before, but it didn't really mean she remembered who he was...or what it was.
She scribbled down something about healing this and that, before putting her cheek down on her palm and staring absently at Professor Botros again. Were those new glasses?

Runic charms sounded COMPLICATED - at least the way that Professor Botros was explaining them. He was a very good teacher, but that didn't mean that he couldn't be confusing at times. Or maybe it was just the magic that was confusing. Anyway, she had a feeling that there would be a lot of note taking this lesson, so might as well start now.
When asked if there were any questions, she raised her hand. "These charms work for physical injuries, but are there runic charms that work for things like illnesses?" Like...diseases or viruses and such... Maybe it was a silly question, but she didn't care. She was curious. |

Runic charms. That was what they would be working on today. Somehow that sounded harder than acting out a scene in Runes history. Well, Janelle would give it her best shot. In the meantime, she took a few notes and kept her quill and parchment ready for whatever came next.
Janelle did not have any questions.....yet. She was anxious to learn anything that had to do with healing though. That could definitely come in handy someday. For now, she would just listen to her classmates ask their questions and take notes as they went along.

Runic charms. They'd done something like this before and if Cutty's memory served him well they were given an example in the artifact that had been found in an ancient Egyptian tomb. It made him think about other items that had been found in the ancient tombs of his mother's homeland. His hand went up to ask a question that would not help his reputation. A bit more complicated?
Uhhohhh....
But Professor Botros jut said healing. That perked the Slytherin up a bit, perhaps she would have to mark this in her textbook for later study. Healing runic charms for physical injuries. Zhenya was about to raise her hand to ask a question, when she heard Lux speak it instead, so she lowered her hand. Yes, she was interested in other illnesses as well.

| PHILOMATH ❅ not one atom, but two ♪ ♪ made of starstuff ❅ def main(): Were there questions? Only about a billion, Professor. Does the love rune magic create love? Make people fall in love? Does the protection protect one from something THEY perceive as harmful? Or just harmful spells? What about natural causes, like a tornado? What if he thought that a certain person was harmful? Did it then act like a shield or a ward? What if he thought grass was harmful?
But Benzi wasn't really in the mood for asking questions. More in the mood for taking notes because runic magic would definitely be in their exams. He'd only gotten an A in his OWL, but he preferred to blame that on his really stupid Runes teacher back in his old school. Botros was much better.
So yes. Notes. Dipping his quill into the inkwell, Benzi scribbled down a summarised version of what the professor had just told them. No class should be more than ten inches of notes, that was his rule.

Seated at the very back, Henric remained silent and brooding. Occasionally, fiddling with his quill and staring blankly at his parchment, not quite listening to what was being said in the classroom. He hadn't had much sleep these days and of top of that, his beloved pet toad was missing. He tried his best to find her but to no avail. And this morning, he didn't even put up his hair and gelled like he always do as part of his daily grooming routine. He let his his unkempt hair partially obscures his face, not bothering to push away the strands out of his eyes. Henric was completely lost in his own thoughts. Runic charms? Healing properties? Hmm...if only it could cure his melancholy, now that would be something of great help.

| Dragon Geisha/Toni-Toni Chopper/Master of Chocobos Alpha Goddess/ Darth Devious /Davvy's twinneh Professor Botros was such a nice man, she thought to herself while she adjusted in her seat. She saw Henric walk in and sit way in the back where she could barely see him. He looked so down it hurt her heart, after class she would have to see what was wrong. Adi asked her if everything was okay and her eyes widened a little. She was surprised at the question and thought that she was putting on a good face. Perhaps Adi just knew her too well by now for that to work. She regained her calm expression and simply gave him a small smile, though he would probably be able to tell that she was concerned and her mind elsewhere. Even if she wanted to talk about something though, class had started so she simply gave him a thumbs up. She had a feeling he might pull it out of her later but, for now she tried to tuck her thoughts away. Ancient Runes was one of her favorite classes and she felt that she did pretty good at it. |

Yes, his article about potions has made him consider this further. Or perhaps he was simply being a Ravenclaw and overthinking things.
It was quite possible. Metals? Botros paused for a moment. "Wood works better with runes because it comes from a live substance, and it's usually full of sedated energy." He rubbed his chin. "In runic charms, what matters most is how you draw those runes together and how strong your magic is while activating them." Hopefully that answered some of the boy's question. Quote:

"We've covered wards before, it's a very delicate and complicated branch of Ancient Runes." That they were not going to dive into this term luckily.
Now! Since no more questions were asked, Botros decided to start. "Runic charms usually consist of three runes, one of them is a non-invertible one." Yes? That was simple. "Depending on the purpose of the charm, the runes differ. For example, we have Sowilo, Jera and Uruz for healing, or Sowilo, Ansuz, and Raidho for safety in a journey... and so on." He turned to his blackboard then and started drawing. "To create a runic charm, we have to draw the three runes sharing at least one line. This way, we merge them together into one. Like this, Quote:

| Post 1 ~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Adi squinted a bit at Ilia. Nice try, Ilia. Having hung out with her so many times, he knew her well by now. Not mega well but enough to pick up that something was on her mind. Too bad he couldn't speak to her about it now. His eyes strayed towards Henric as he came in and what he saw caused Adi to raise an eyebrow. Why was Henric's hair like THAT? It was all over the place... that was not at all like his friend. And the expression on his face? Uh oh. Adi's eyes flicked between Ilia and Henric. He had his eyes on these two.
.....................
Right. So Runic charms. Adi started to make notes. It was barely the start of the class and he was already really confused. He paused to look over at Gabe. He sure could use some of the Ravenclaw's knowledge right now. Or even his sciency brain.
The Hufflepuff STARED at the board trying to make sense of it all but it looked like a bunch of alien stuff to him -___- He did get that the non-invertible rune was the strongest one though. But it seemed as though they were jumping right into the activity. GreatMajesticHippogriffs! He was going to fail at this, he just KNEW it! Adi grabbed one of the rectangular wood Botros had indicated before shuffling not so cheerfully back to his seat.
Now, his eyes focused back on the board. Soooo, they were going to carve, huh? This Adi could do. Yessir! Already familiar with the spell, he raised his wand to the wood. Let's get to carving!

Hogwarts RPG Name: Norah Kittredge Seventh Year | post 1 Lil' gooz | Sarangel | Junior Dweeb Norah narrowed her eyes at the board. What? Why were they sticking together all funny? They were just lines, there was really no reason for them to have to share. Sharing was caring, obviously, but they were just runes, not people with chocolate. People with chocolate needed to share. It wasn't an actual rule but it SHOULD have been a rule, except apparently all the sharing rules were being saved for runic lines in their funny shapes. She really needed to become the person in charge because apparently these folks had their priorities all wrong.
The fourth year drew the shapes as best she could in her parchment, turning her head sideways to try and make sure she'd drawn it right, but that just made everything look even more confusing so she put her face right side up again. Apparently it COULD get more confusing. Who knew. Setting her quill down gratefully on the table, she slid out of her seat and went to get a piece of wood just like Botros had said. Hiiiii plank thing. Norah drummed her fingers on the smooth surface as she looked at the board some more, wrinkling her nose at the shapes some more because how was she supposed to picture those if she could barely make 'em out?

Alfie did as they were told and retrieved a block of wood. He then went back to his seat next to the Slytherin sixth year called Cutty, and continued to glance back and forth between the blank piece of wood and the jumble of lines Botros had written on the board.
Then there was the spell... "Bloody hell..." he cursed under his breath, there were like a million things to learn and Botros was just letting them do it all willy nilly. Alfie couldn't quite wrap his head around the multiple concepts. "Right... Intanglio... In-ta-LEE-oh... IN-ta-lee-OH? In-TA-lee-oh?" What was the emphasis again?

Nodding, Lux made a note of that as well as the rest of the information Professor Botros was providing.
Staring at the board, she THOUGHT she knew that the man was talking about...but she wasn't sure. So runic charms were generally made up of three runes and one of them was non-invertible. Pretty simple. It was the merging part that was a little harder to grasp. All she saw was a strange looking doodle that ended in an arrow.

Kate was actually following this. Botros just took three separate runes, put the one that couldn't be reversed in the middle, and then fit them together like a puzzle. That was actually pretty cool, Kate thought. She hoped they got the chance to fit the runic symbols together like puzzle pieces later on. The charm she was less interested in.
Kate stood from her seat and went to collected a piece of wood. Once she was back at her seat, Kate decided to try the incantation a bit. Truth be told, after her short absence, she couldn't remember if she'd done the spell before or not. "Intaglio," she said. "Intaglio." The wand movement was so simple that she decided not to practice it.
Kate studied the professor's example until she had a good picture in her head. "Intaglio Sowilo," she said, her wand pointed at the surface of the wood. Kate held her concentration until the entire rune was carved into the wood. Her carving was a little crooked, but for the most part, it was perfectly straight.

| Post #1 be curious, not judgmental Huh. Looking at the board, the runic charms were really... well, as simple as she'd thought. At first glance, it LOOKED hard and weird and complicated, but it was actually super cool, combining them like that.
Oh, getting right into then, were they? Sophie hurried to retrieve a block of wood, then skittered back to her desk and brushed off the face of it, already trying to envision the way she would carve the runic charm into the wood.
They were just starting with Sowilo, then, which made plenty of sense as it was the base rune or whatever Botros had called it, so... full speed ahead. "Intaglio... IN-ta-LEE-oh..." she practiced the incantation, even though she'd used it before - for some reason, when it came to this class, her tongue tended to get tied up and words were hard to get out. She continued murmuring it under her breath a few times, staring hard at her block of wood in concentration.
This'd be a piece of cake.

Okay, that was kind of neat. Drawing all three phases of the spell in his notes, Benzi quickly wrote down all the important bits including some of the answers he gave his classmates. The extra stuff was usually what ended up in the exams anyways.
Benzi stood and went to grab his plank of wood for today, still wondering about the new shape that had been created out of the three individual runes. "Professor does the order of the actual carving matter?" Benzi asked, his hand in the air. "And what if I had thought to put Jera on top and Uruz on the bottom?"
How specific was this anyway?

How specific was this anyway? Oh! What an interesting question. "Yes. It's always better to start with the non-invertible rune. In this case, we should always start with Sowilo." Botros smiled happily at the Ravenclaw who asked this, and continued, "You can attach the other two runes to Sowilo in any order or shape you like. Make sure your mind is clear and intention is strong when you carve them, is what's important." |

Ben wrote down all of what Botros was speaking on about the topic. Including the fact that one of them had to be a rune that wasn't invertible. He briefly remembered that term, if not which it applied to, making a note to look it back up in his textbook to be sure while he did whatever was asked of him involving it. Oh and the runes shared a line or two...that was certainly interesting. As an example appeared on the blackboard, it appeared as a whole new swiggly shape encompassing all three runes.
The sixth year got up from his desk to grab a piece of wood as directed, returning soon enough to his desk and slipping his wand out from where it was kept. He knew the spell well enough so he needn't practice it for once before using it.
Wait...were they carving the three runes on the board?

It sure was a good thing Adi had not yet started his carving for that Ravenclaw asked a very pertinent question. He paused, his mouth open as he almost started to say the incantation. His mouth snapped shut and tilted his head in Botros's direction. Soooo, start with Sowilo. Alrightey.
"Intaglio Sowilo, Intaglio Sowilo, Intaglio Sowilo,'' he said confidently as he kept a firm grip of the picture of Sowilo in his mind. Some more chanting had the correctly shaped rune on the chunk of wood complete with the golden glow. AWESOMEEE! One rune down! Now, Adi looked back at the board. Uruz and Jera left... their order didn't matter.
Focus time again! "Intaglio Uruz, Uruz, Intaglio Uruz!'' Seeeee? This wasn't hard. There was the Uruz shape on the wood at the top of Sowilo just s how it was on the board. Moving on to the final carving! "Intaglio Jera! Intaglio Jera! Intaglio Jera!'' One golden looking Jera rune appeared on the bottom of Sowilo.
Now Adi had three glowy golden runes attached together. Not a bad start. Maybe he would survive not screwing up after all.

It was a good thing that Lux hadn't started carving yet, because if it wasn't for that Ravenclaw's question she would have started with a different rune. Okay...she would begin with Sowilo. That wasn't in the least bit different.
Wand in hand, Lux began chanting the incantation with an image of the rune firmly in her mind. "Intaglio Sowilo, Intaglio Sowilo, Intaglio Sowilo, Intaglio Sowilo..." There. Now she had a pretty carving with a golden glow on her piece of wood. On to Uruz and Jera!
Placement for these two didn't matter as much, but Lux decided that she was going to stick with what Professor Botros had drawn on the board. He didn't say that it wasn't allowed. Time to focus. "Intaglio Uruz, Intaglio Uruz, Intaglio Uruz..." Not too bad, and it connected to Sowilo perfectly. One last rune to go. "Intaglio Jera, Intaglio Jera, Intaglio Jera..."
And she was done! |

| Post #1 urine trouble | Pat's Strong Confident Other Half | Pees Like a Champion Unicorn Racehorse LOL. Runic Charms. Lol. It was more complicated. Lol. Lol. Lol.
He was gonna end up leaving this class with a throbbing headache, dude was sure of that.
Grayson stared at the board for a minute or so, trying to make sense of it all. Yeah, he understood the part about joining all the runes up by a line or whatever but it felt like there was something he wasn't quite understanding and he wasn't sure which part of the madness it was.
Lol, he was gonna fail this NEWT. Oh man.
Trying not to think about any of that, the Slytherin got up and headed over to a particular corner of the room to grab a chunk of wood for himself. Did he care about the look of the wood? Nah! Long as it did the job and didn't blow up in his face or whatever. He kinda liked this face and all.
Once he had picked out a chunk of wood, the seventh year headed back to his seat and sat down again. Alright. Practice first seeing as he'd never had to use this spell before. ................. Right? Or had he conveniently forgotten? "Intaglio......... In-ta-LEE-oh.......... in-ta-LEE-oh......"

Make sure your mind is clear and intention is strong when you carve them, is what's important." Benzi listened attentively to Botros, nodding at the explanation and writing it down in his notes. This stuff made it into exams. Yup. "Thanks Professor." "Intaglio Sowilo," he cast, and repeated it over and over again until the rune he was trying to carve glowed gold on his block of wood. The shape was pretty straight forward too, so no difficulties there. Focusing on his intention and keeping stray thoughts at bay as much as he could, he cast his next rune next. "Intaglio Jera," he repeated the incantation over and over as he traced the shape of the rune, making sure to overlap the line with the existing Sowilo carving. As soon as his Jera glowed gold, he moved onto Uruz. "Intaglio Uruz, intaglio uruz," over and over, tracing the rune until it too glowed gold.
Cool. It kind of looked like a wonky arrow if he squinted.

| Post 1 curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog For some reason, Caleb always liked this part of the class. Carving the runes and doing actual physical stuff. He hated the whole written part of the subject, though. As was evidenced by his OWL grade in this course. Alright, time to do this...Caleb took out his wand and prepared himself to make this healing rune thingy.
Taking his blank rune, he cleared his throat and began to picture the rune clearly in his brain. It was kind of impossible to NOT remember what they looked like after all those revisions last term..."Intaglio Sowilo," he muttered, picturing Sowilo clearly in his mind as he did so. "Intaglio Sowilo...Intaglio Sowilo..." he muttered over and over again as the rune began to glow and carve itself into the wood.
Lovely. One rune down, two more to go!

Kate could already see a hint of a golden shine showing on her rune, indicating, like the professor said, that it was carved with magic. Awesome. Kate's blue eyes flickered back to the example, and she noted that Jera was next. Well, then. She should be an old pro at this by now. Kate pointed her wand toward the bottom portion of what she'd already carved, because that was the place where Jera would go. "Intaglio Jera!" she said. Kate began carving the shape of Jera onto the bottom of her other carving. She focused on the shape of the rune and even on the meaning as she did so. "Intaglio Jera!" she said again. Kate continued her carving until Jera was added, just like a puzzle piece, to the end of her other carving. When she was done, it, too, gave a golden glow.
Just one rune left!

| Made of Awesome | Ern-la the Best-wa | TZ's Apogee Were they meant to carve the runes on the board, or were they meant to come up with their own combinations? Because Dot wasn't sure how those particular runes did what the Professor wanted, or how she was supposed to know instinctively which combination could do what she wanted.
Rather than a combination that made something exploded. Although if that was a real thing, she wanted to know how to do it.
But anyway, to the task at hand, since peeping over Sophie's shoulder had indicated that Dot was supposed to do the professor's combination. She could ask about the exploding later. Dot straightened up her piece of wood and pointed her wand at it. "Intaglio Sowilo. Intaglio Sowilo." The rune was fixed in her head, and it transferred pretty well through her carving. Mostly. One of the legs was too deep, but at least it generally looked right. Yay, Dot.
