Default The Three Broomsticks

The Three Broomsticks

Centered among the shops of Hogsmeade is a well enough known pub in the small village, called The Three Broomsticks. Not unlike the Hog's Head down the street in the strictest idea of pubs, drinks and the like, however it is the atmosphere that helps make the latter choice the one hailed by the mass majority. The outside of the building is a good preview of what the inside may look like with the same steep roof as the surrounding buildings, yet taller, with a sign on it's facade featuring, you guessed it, the legendary three boomsticks, all fixed around a lantern to light the patrons' way.

Once you enter the pub, smells and the warmth of the large stone fireplace great you as you place hats and coats by the door. Directly infront of you there are tables and booths lining the majority of the small hall with oil lamps placed on each one. On winter days it is usually hard to find a place beside the large fire grate but if you're early enough, only Merlin can say what will happen. To your left the bar and most likely the bartender Harold "Hops" Lagerty, await you and your order--a few stools await you to take a load off and shoot the breeze with others.

The bartender is pretty sociable to those who don't annoy him. He's seen his lot of warlocks, goblins, and Hogwarts kids to know which ones were trouble and which of those made loyal customers, so be sure not to be put on the first part of the list.

A few rules from the Shop Owner: No brawling, no shouting (angrily), no alcohol to minors, and don't go up the stairs, I live up there.

OCC Rules: No RPing for the shopkeeper and all other School RPG Rules apply.

The woman, he didn't recognize and her choice of words, let alone tables had him suspicious. Had Peverell got to Sander? Was this one of the mad-man's lackeys? Or had the Daily Prophet gone and done it again?

It occurred to him, as the cool calm of instinct took over, that it didn't matter. He would find out soon enough.

Taking quick stock of who was in the room with them, and finding that eyes and attention barely acknowledged either of them, Sabel followed the woman to the table and took up a seat across from her. Now, being so close, he could see her properly and something else clicked. "You're a relative."
"I'm also the Headmistress of Hogwarts," Annie answered, taking stock of Sabel and his apparent suspicion. After a pause, she offered her hand across the table for him to shake. Her wand hand, by the way. "Anastasia Truebridge, pleasure to meet you at last."

Was she allowed to get a drink and reach into her purse now, or would his Auror-senses start tingling?

The .... Headmistress?

There wasn't much that gave him pause in these recent days, but that just about did it. Sabel blinked at her a few times and nearly demanded to see some identification. Why was the Headmistress of Hogwarts here, instead of Sander?

But it was her hand, extended in good faith, that kept his tongue still. After a moment of consideration, he took her hand and shook it. "Sabel Dakest, but you...already know that."

Taking his hand back, Sabel rested a little easier in his chair but left his caution in place, piqued by concern. "Is Sander alright?" Probably not. Why else would the woman be here? The fool probably took his exploring too far. And if a relative was here...

This Auror was ever the cautious one. In most circumstances, Annie would have become impatient and annoyed by now. But for the purposes of this meeting, for the person she was looking for... Mr. Dakest was right to be suspicious. And at least he shook her hand.

"Sander is fine. He's at Honeydukes, just down the road, in fact. I didn't mean to intrude on your... social interactions with my cousin, but when the opportunity presented itself...." She trailed off to reach into her purse at last, placing a folded, but still pristine, copy of the most recent Daily Prophet on the table between them. One article in particular was circled in red ink.

She gave him another moment, knowing he would likely want to take this all in and process it before saying much else. So, Annie would do the talking. "At a recent family get-together, Sander happened to mention how HAPPY he was to be working with the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, specifically, an Auror named Dakest. Then your name came up in the article, and coincidentally, Sander had already made plans to meet with you here. Now, I'm not trying to intrude on your private affairs, Mr. Dakest, but I happen to think this article is a load of hippogriff dung. My cousin may be a foolish risk-taker, but I don't think he's a poor judge of character."

The Headmistress paused a moment. Why, she hadn't even gotten to the point of this meeting and already she was parched. "Would you like something to drink?"

The Headmistress paused a moment. Why, she hadn't even gotten to the point of this meeting and already she was parched. "Would you like something to drink?"

A quiet breath of relief left him. Good. That was, good.

As fool-headed and troublesome as the red-head had been, Sabel had developed quite the soft spot for him. He was a good guy, and if something had happened....Well, it hadn't. So that was that. The kid was going to get a word or two, when this meeting was up and over. Could have sent an owl, or a patronus, or a warning of some sort.

Glancing down at the article, Sabel found himself letting out another breath. Of course. That thing was following him around like a rabid dog. The look he returned to the Headmistress was neutral. He didn't need to read it. He'd done that enough. So what did she want from it? What was the Headmistress of Hogwarts doing, pulling an Auror aside over some Daily Prophet article?

Sabel listened to her words quietly, trying to sauce out the meaning of the meeting and where this was all going. Was she trying to protect Sander from what they perceived was a dangerous meeting? Or was she worried, with the history of the Cult and it's involvement of Hogwarts, that her school and her students were at risk? Or was it both?

He shook his head at the offer of a drink, interlacing his fingers together in a ball on the table as he leaned forward a little, watching her eyes carefully. "I appreciate the vote of confidence, Ms. Truebridge. Your cousin is a good guy. I owe him my life. And I have heard good things about your leadership at Hogwarts."

If the truth was told, he didn't care to try to defend himself or the MLE. They had done enough for everyone, that a defense shouldn't even be required. But, he did owe Sander and he could more than appreciate the Headmistress's position. He spread his hands. "So, what is it I can do for you?"

He'd answer what questions he could, and put what fears at ease that he could. After all, it was about all he could do. It was hard to defend against a fear mongering newspaper.

He didn't like the article, eh? Anastasia found it difficult not to smirk, as per her usual, and instead left for a brief moment to get a gillywater. She returned to her seat quickly and smoothly, not missing a bit of their conversation. She was a bit surprised and pleased, however, to hear that he... approved of her leadership?

"You could do a lot for me, actually, Mr. Dakest, and for your alma mater." She took a small sip of her gillywater. "Hogwarts needs to be a safer place. I think you know why, given the school's history and its recent turn of events." A boy had DIED last year, and this was still on her conscience. She was willing to bet that he had heard about that. "I'll bet you didn't know that Hogwarts has an opening in your field, however. Defense Against the Dark Arts. I need someone trustworthy, knowledgeable, experienced, and yet CAUTIOUS in that position. If this paper's claims are not true, and if what I know of you IS true, then I think you could be the best man for the job."

She settled back in her chair a little bit and had another sip of the gillywater. What did she think about that?

To be frank, he had no idea what his doing for her could do for his alma mater. It was quite detailed as it was, and apparently easily questioned as proven by yours truly, the Daily Prophet. But he settled back in his seat and heard out the rest of what she had to say, admittedly more than a little curious as to where this was going.

He nodded slowly at the truth about Hogwarts. Ever since he had attended there, the school had maintained a track record of trouble, including the more recent, and extremely unfortunate circumstances surrounding the boy. It just seemed to be a...thing at Hogwarts. Even when Tate had been there, it had been dangerous. So, he wasn't sure what he could pull to the table, unless she was asking for help from the MLE...

He had been blind-sighted and hit by a variety of things coming out of left field; fists, spells, Dark Wizards, heck even lap-sitting witches and adventure mad red-heads. But nothing had prepared him for this. Never, had he expected to hear such words coming from anyone, let alone the Headmistress of his old school.

For a moment, he stared at her, trying to process exactly what she had said. Trying to ensure that he hadn't heard her wrong. He was pretty sure he hadn't. He'd been listening closely, so closely it felt like his ears were ringing.

Was she seriously offering him a job? To teach at Hogwarts? She thought he was the best man for the job? The very concept knocked him off his feet. Not only was it a vague hope that had always lingered in the back of his mind since he graduated Hogwarts, but it proved a sudden, and easy answer to concerns that had recently taken hold. And an honor. A mind-numbing honor.

How was he supposed to prove that he wasn't as the Prophet said he was, and that he was as she thought? Was this a job interview? Or a trap?

To his horror, the words were out of his mouth before he could even think to revise them. "I'd like to see some ID."

Well, that reaction wasn't quite what she had been expecting. With a small, impatient huff that said 'I'm too important and obviously recognizable for this level of scrutiny,' Annie reached into her purse and dug around for her school ID. Once it was found, she tossed it haughtily on the table between them and waited for the Auror to ascertain that she was, in fact, offering him a job. She was NOT trying to kill him OR trick him OR humiliate him in any way.

"Are times that bad that you're suspicious of everyone?" she asked coldly, suddenly feeling a stab of regret for arranging this meeting. But on closer inspection... perhaps her instincts were correct. Hogwarts DID need the most paranoid of the paranoid. This was precisely the kind of person she would want teaching her son to watch his back. The question was, what would it take to convince Sabel Dakest to come to Hogwarts?

The embarrassment came through as the woman across from him huffed and jostled through her things. That there was enough proof for him that she was who she said she was, but the years of experience and exercised caution kept him silent from saying so. Hesitantly, he reached over and picked up her ID, doing his best not to examine it like all the others he had looked at over the years. A curious glance, at best. He only partly succeeded in that.

"I'm trained to be suspicious of people, but recent events have made me more wary." Sabel's eyes left the ID to look up at her. The full weight of what she was saying was finally settling on his shoulders, her hostility towards his blurted request an uncomfortable contrast. He didn't want to ruin this, but he wouldn't explain his caution. That was one of the points in her list of requirements after all. Blimey.

Letting out a slow breath, Sabel placed the ID back on the table and slid it over to her. "I meant no offense, Ms. Truebridge,, but all the same, thank you for obliging me."

Once the ID was back on her side of the table, he sat back again, scrubbing at his neck. Job offer. Defense Against the Dark Arts, job offer. There was an excitement that was starting to grow within, pricking at his caution, trying to silence his hesitation. It asked the most obvious question. Why was he hesitating? This wasn't a joke. This wasn't a game, trick or illusion.

His eyes returned to her, noting the evaluation and conviction in her gaze. This was real. She was serious about this. Regardless of what the Prophet had said, or might say. To suggest that she hadn't considered it was insulting. Otherwise, the paper wouldn't be sitting in front of him, the red circle staring at him. People talked, people believed, people feared and parents did a great deal of all of those things. The fact that she was willing to look beyond public perception to character, was both curious and impressive.

Sabel straightened a little, trying to sort sense through the torrent of thoughts. "I'm honored, and more than a little surprised, that you sought me out." Out of everyone that she could have chosen. He still wasn't sure why him. Why not Damien, or Evander or even Wesley. Perhaps it was personal connection? If so, he owed Sander big.

"What can I do to convince you, that I am that man?" The one that was right for the job. The one that she thought he was.

Of course he meant no offense. He was about to get offered a most excellent deal, in her humble opinion. Annie took the ID back with a smaller scoff now, but let the subject drop. His suspicion well well-placed, she supposed. After all, most people generally APPLIED for an opening before they were interviewed for it. He was alright to exercise caution and the tiniest amount of suspicion.

Suspicion aside, did he WANT the DADA vacancy? It seemed he did, so that could be a positive sign. "You can owl me an updated resume and list of references, for starters. I'd prefer if not all these references were current co-workers." Because now there were shifty things afoot in the Ministry, or so the Prophet implied, and Anastasia didn't know who to trust. Only Legend Chosen was alright in her book, but he was obviously too immature to teach at Hogwarts. And he probably wouldn't want to.

So, back to Sabel. "I also have a few more questions for you, if that's alright." They could continue with this interview now, yeah?

Sabel relaxed a little more. She hadn't reconsidered on account of his paranoia. A good start. And all she wanted was a resume, references and a few questions? Easy enough. He had updated the first the day the Prophet article had come out, more out of discontent and annoyance than clear planning. As for references, he nodded. "Won't be a problem."

Damien, Evander, Jaxton, Emily, Tate and maybe even Wesley. There were more than a handful of people he could ask, and a few back-ups if disappointment for even considering leaving the MLE came up. After the letter he had received, however, he didn't suspect a problem.

The requests did temper his excitment though. Perhaps she did have a few more candidates lined up. It would only make sense. The same question returned. Did he want this? The answer seemed simple enough.

Sabel spread his hands. "Ask away." He couldn't guarantee an open-book disclosure of some questions, but she had his ear and his attention.

Excellent. He was willing to play the game so the Board would approve him. Good good good.

The Headmistress nodded and took a sip of her gillywater, resting her hands around her glass as she put on her usual interview tone. "I'm just going to rapid-fire shoot these at you, so get ready. You can answer in whichever order you'd like. Number one: What would you consider your strengths and weaknesses? Two: How would your co-workers describe you? Three: If I asked you what was the worst thing you've ever done, would you immediately know the answer? Four: What is the largest wizarding threat children need to be prepared for upon leaving Hogwarts? And five: What are your thoughts on defensive theory vs. practical defensive knowledge?"

Anddddddd pause for breath and to allow Dakest's head to stop spinning....

Rapid fire indeed. Sabel couldn't recall any interview, job or life based that had tossed so many questions at him all at once. Except, for maybe when Damien had taken to scolding him for being an idiot. But those had been rehotircal questions, and most had never needed an answer. These, did.

And he was surprised to find they came relatively easy. "My strengths and weaknesses." He scrubbed at his chin slowly, suddenly regretting not having a drink to have this conversation over. In his mind, there was one strength and weakness that he had, and everything else stemmed from that. But voicing it was both somewhat philosophical, and an admission he was careful never to make for fear of the wrong people hearing.

So, he skipped to the basics. "I'm good at my job, at what I do. The practical side, the spell work, the investigation. Integrity, commitment, intuition, evaluation, judgement, attentiveness, diligence, vigilance. Protecting people." He shrugged, somewhat self-conscious of having rattled it all off. "I have a strong moral compass and a drive to help people."

As for his weaknesses? It made him smile a little. "However, I've been told, and proven to myself, that I can be impulsive, a bit hot-headed and temperamental, idealistic and I've been known to speak my mind at the wrong time. "Things I'm working on." Sounded less lovely, but then, she had asked.

His smile turned into a chuckle at recalling the second question. "My co-workers? Well, the younger generation has not been shy to tell me that I talk too much and need to learn how to relax. I'm not sure whether they look up to me or are irritated by me." Another shrug. "My peers and the older generation though? Loyal, I suppose. Perhaps to a fault. Good at what I do."

How could he summarize? "A Gryffindor, still." Always. She would either appreciate that, or loathe it. At least he wasn't a snake?

His smile disappeared as he turned to the third question. For a moment, he watched her, searched her eyes. Was she going to ask him? It occurred to him that it didn't matter, the answer couldn't change. "Yes, I do know."

He looked away, considering taking a break for a drink, but refrained. What would that show about the worst thing that he had done? It certainly wouldn't build any confidence in her, though he wasn't sure what confidence, if any, his words were instilling in her at all. Refocussing his attention, Sabel decided to switch up the last two questions.

"As for teaching, I prefer practical knowledge. Especially in a subject like DADA. It's one thing to hear about how to act, or preform a spell, or what a circumstance is like, without being in it. Reactions are different. Choices are different." His gaze returned to her. "Granted, temperance and sensibility should be used and more...sensitive topics require the distance that theory affords."

Which led him to his last point, easily answered by his encounters with the YATI's opinions. "Though, that doesn't seem to do much for curiosity. I would argue, that the largest threat to kids is misconception. That the Dark Arts and Dark Wizards, are interesting. An intriguing curiosity to be explored, tested and experimented with." His expression was grave as he glanced around the pub, finally settling on the Headmistress. He was sure she was no stranger to his words. "When in fact, there's nothing further from the truth."

Strengths were good. Weaknesses were.... at least honest. Co-worker descriptions seemed consistent. Sabel was very much a Gryffindor, both by his own admission and from what she had heard about him so far. Despite that, honestly, Gryffindors often made the best DADA subjects teachers. Just look at how fearlesslyish Airey had handled her DADA lesson last term.

She nodded along as he continued, mentally taking notes for follow-up questions. Annie's blue eyes met his at one point, and she leaned in as she softly asked, "Is the worst thing you've ever done something you would feel comfortable with your students learning about you? You do realize that they try to get into their professors' lives and under their skin, and sometimes with poor intentions..."

The Headmistress took a sip of her drink, after that, and now she was finished with both gillywaters. "I appreciate a hands-on approach to DEFENSE Against the Dark Arts. I daresay you've worked with a share of my former students, including Alexa Cambridge, no? I believe her intention after school was to either become a Dark wizard or else delve into her curiosity surrounding them." Annie rolled her eyes heavenward. "The DMLE certainly has its work cut out for them in trying to change HER mind. Since we're on the same page there regarding practicality and sensibility, how would you go about teaching DADA? Where do you think the education of magical graduates like Alexa is lacking? How can we teach our students how to defend themselves, and make them see the VALUE of defense, without actually placing them at great risk?" Or at least, without placing them at greatER risk than Hogwarts already contained...

Well, his admissions hadn't concluded the interview right then and there. A good sign, he supposed. Though by the light in the Headmistress's eyes, he had a suspicion that those had been the easiest questions, to answer and to pass.

He was in the process of taking a breath of collection, when the woman poked a little bit more into his 'worst thing'. Her question had a small smile touching his lips. "It holds no weight over me any more, besides the regrets of memory. Even if it did, I'd be impressed if a student could suss it out. I've spent the better part of a decade contending with parties within the Prophet and Dark wizarding community who've been interested in getting under my skin, and then some."

Granted, kids could be more creative in their methods, but he didn't think their intentions or executions could quite match the day-to-day an Auror faced. But then, that was a limited opinion with no experience as a Professor. He vaguely wondered what types of stories the Headmistress had, that she would provide him with such a caution. Maybe one day, he would ask. Then again, maybe it was something best not to ask about.

Regardless, now was hardly the time.

Tenting his fingers on the table, Sabel leaned forward slightly. "A few of them." Though until now he hadn't really paid much mind as to whose students they had been. Only the school. He understood the point the Headmistress was making, but at the same time the compulsive draw to defend one of his own was overruling. "Unfortunately, I'm not at liberty to make comments on the interests or habits of my co-workers." It was, after all, how the mess of the Daily Prophet was usually started. "But I can say that she is proving herself to be a capable hire, and a promising Auror." Interest in the Dark Arts or not.

"Whoever trained her, did a good job." And he had been hoping to pull a few notes from that person's book, but it seemed the Headmistress wouldn't even allow that indulgence. He had been expecting a simple 'guys' chat over drinks with Sander, not a job interview with the Headmistress of Hogwarts. To say he was under-prepared, was an understatement to the extreme.

He thought for a moment, rubbing the pads of his fingers together as he formulated a response. "Open discussion." It seemed too simple, too easy of an answer. "People, kids especially, find the unknown interesting and intriguing. Especially a forbidden unknown. If honest, open discussion is facilitated, it may help." But they couldn't just sit around the DADA classroom all day, yapping their gums. He wondered how far her humor stretched, and how she might react to suggesting that the alternative was dropping the kids off for a day of tumble with Dementors, or a sparing match with a few prisoners from Azkaban.

She didn't look like she had much humor to spare at this point, so he kept the grim musing to himself. "Otherwise, the same way as the YATI's are trained. Practice of skills, spells and a resourceful mindset that protects and prevents, whether against a dark wizard or a good wizard, dark magic or muggle conflict. They don't have to face the Dark Arts to be taught how to protect themselves and others."

Though it most certainly did help in developing a certain type of appreciation, and resentful respect, of them.

He shrugged a little self-consciously, all too aware of how idealistic his words sounded. He didn't know how to explain training, he just knew how to do it. "Early on, I was told that the use of Dark Arts is a choice, but the intention behind that choice doesn't make it any less dark or damaging." Thanks Tate. "Give them other choices, other options, other mindsets to deal with difficult circumstances, in all circumstances, and they may not feel the need to turn to such things as Dark Arts in desperation if, and when, the time comes." He hesitated. There was another part, a less pleasant part than exploring all that magic had to offer. "And consequences. They need to know about them. Not necessarily through direct experience, but if simple explanation doesn't work then by the experiences and memories of others. It's one thing to read about the Cruciatus Curse and want to use it, and another to hear or see a memory from a victim and to understand the pain they would be causing. They need to realize, and understand, they have a responsibility to themselves, and to each other. "

"That's true." A slow smile, if one could call it that, emerged however briefly on the Headmistress' lips. Dakest was adept at dodging the press, no? She'd call that another plus for him, in her book.

Well, good. He wasn't one to gossip. "Would you believe that back in the day I wrote Legend Chosen a letter of recommendation for the YATI program?" How old did THAT make her look? "But that's neither here nor there; we're here to talk about you, Sabel, and what kind of a professor you would make." A young one, certainly. Even now, her mind was trying to figure out what kind of an age gap would exist between their oldest staff member (Botros) and their soon-to-be youngest... for yes, Bunz had already made up her mind about this young Auror.

She again found herself listening with rapt attention to his responses, already picturing him even if his hair was a bit long for her tastes delivering this speech about open communication to a classroom full of students. "I couldn't agree more, Mr. Dakest. You have impressed me with this surprise interview today, but I wouldn't have it any other way. You're exactly what I want in our DADA position, and exactly WHO I want to teach the subject, starting now. I daresay that the sooner you can send me your resume and references, the sooner I can officially offer you this position and get you confirmed by the Hogwarts Board of Governors." She rapped her knuckles on the wooden table between them for a moment, thought about asking him yet one more question, and then quickly changed her mind about it.

"So, all things said, I don't think I need to keep you from my troublesome cousin any longer." Annie offered him a genuine smile and then her hand, again, for a parting handshake. "Please owl me that information, but until you are officially hired, will I be able to find you at the Ministry of Magic should any problems arise?"

It was hard not to stare. This lady, this current Headmistress of Hogwarts and the woman offering him a position at the school, had given Legend Chosen a letter of recommendation? What was it with bumping into people that were only a mild separation from him? But more importantly, if she had recommended Legend for the YATI program, then why wasn't she interviewing him for this position?

The compulsion to ask was hard to curb. Whatever her reasons, they were her reasons. Maybe she had already asked Legend, and he had said no. The guy had a prominent place in the MLE, and he was undeniably good at his job. So he kept his thoughts to himself in exchange for a simple reply and nod of his head. "Legend is a good friend, and has become a fine Auror."

One that Ms. Truebridge should be impressed by. The fact that she was impressed by his hastily strewn together words and idealistic ideas, floored him. The fact that she was practically offering him the job on the spot, rendered him speechless. He had to remind himself that nothing was certain, that there were still things that had to be considered and he was neither in or out at this point, all just so that he could nod in understanding and agreement. "You'll have them as soon as I can make contact with my references."

Confirmed by the Hogwarts Board of Governors. The line made his head spin a bit. He moved forward slightly to shake her hand, a tempered smile of excitement and hope on his lips. "I...can't express how humbled, and honored, I am that you have taken the time to interview me and find me....a suitable candidate for the position. Thank you." A nod. "You can find me at the ministry."

Hesitation pricked at his mind as he retracted his hand, his smile slipping a little with it. Did he dare speak his thoughts now, when he was so close? Would it kill his opportunity to do so? Sabel let out a breath. It would do greater harm than good to speak of it later, if and when the acceptance actually went through. It was best, to lay all the cards out on the table now.

"But, should the position be confirmed by the Board of Governors, I have one condition of acceptance I feel I should say now, rather than later." That way she could consider another candidate if his condition resonated unreasonable with any of the staff or Governors. "I understand that working at Hogwarts requires full time residency of the staff. And I'm more than aware that most of the staff members have family, and they have to give up a lot of time to teach. And I understand that my personal, past choices have nothing to do with a position at Hogwarts, and the consequences are mine to deal with. And I respect the decisions of the staff and the Governors."

His eyes locked with hers. "But I have a wife, and two young kids who's lives I've barely been around for due to ... work." A choice he regretted daily. "And it is not in the best interest of my family if I take another job that keeps me away from them consistently." He took a breath. "For their sake, I'm afraid that should the position be offered, I can only accept if I am allowed to return home to my family every second day, or at least once in the middle of the week and on weekends."

As much as he hoped for the Headmistress's offer to return to him, he couldn't put his family through another extended absence. Not when he had a choice in the matter.

"Heard he made Head Auror," she mused in reply, wondering just how much, really, he had changed since his adolescent years. Did he still eat popcorn wherever and whenever he felt? Probably. On the other hand, the last time she'd seen him, he HAD done a nice job of arresting Domingo...

Anyway. She shook his hand with an excited smile of her own. "There's no need to worry about conditions regarding the needs of your family, Sabel. My own family mostly lives at a small cottage in Hogsmeade. A friend of mine sold it to me when he heard I was becoming Headmistress." She shrugged slightly. "Surely you don't think all of us stay at the castle at all times, do you? Most have a direct floo to their families in their own office. I'm sure you'd be able to set that up, as long as you can be here to teach your lessons and hold your office hours."

She smiled again and gathered up her purse. "We'll be in touch, Sabel. I daresay you can find Sander now, if he's not already on his way to you." And with that, she headed for the door.

The woman seemed to have quite the reputable sources, and Sabel couldn't help but wonder if Sander was one such person. Not so much a tourist, as a procurer of information. He'd have to ask.

For the moment, he found the heat of embarrassment rushing to color his cheeks. He had thought that the Professors stayed at the castle on a permanent basis, with only a few breaks here and there to see loved ones or friends outside. In his day, they had always been on hand. But then, in his day, he'd been naive and narrow-visioned.

It was an overwhelming relief, that he wouldn't have to bargain for time with his family. And that relief showed clearly in the genuine smile that took hold. "Of course, I would be. And thank you, very much."

He rose to his feet as the Headmistress prepared to leave. "I look forward to it, Ms. Truebridge."

Sabel stayed standing until she was gone from the Three Broomsticks. As soon as the door closed behind her, Sabel dropped back into his seat, scrubbing his hands over his face and back through his hair as he let out the breath he had desperately been holding in.

Had that seriously just happened?
