 Feel like looking at some stars? You've come to the right place. From here in the Hogwarts Observatory you can see a tiny fraction of the 400 billion or so stars found in the Milky Way Galaxy. This circular but spacious room has been locked and opened as many times as there have been Astronomy professors staffed at the school. The huge telescope that former Hogwarts Astronomy professor, Professor Anteres, had put in years ago is still here and fully operable. Students are very welcome to try and use it. If you need a hand Professor Flamsteed is always somewhere close by and can lend you assistance. If the giant telescope is too much there is always smaller telescopes stored away in the cupboards around the room which you can borrow and use as you please as well as other astronomy objects.
Large star charts are pinned to the walls which anyone is free to study for own leisure or school assignment. Don't try and take the charts down though, as they are charmed to warn if somebody tries to remove them.
Stargazing is an activity best practiced at night and therefore the observatory remains unlocked. Students adhere by a curfew and after that hour no students should be found out of bed. If you desire to study the heavens after curfew, you need a signed note from Professor Flamsteed showing that you are allowed to stay up after hours. If caught after hours without a signed note you can expect that there will be consequences like loss of house points or detention.
The observatory is place for scientific inquiry much like the library is a place to immerse yourself in books, since it’s a shrine to our massively beautiful universe. Please respect any teacher or student spending time in the observatory by not running around or shouting in high pitched voices. Just because Professor Flamsteed isn't currently in the observatory doesn't mean he isn't watching what is going on.
OOC: you do not HAVE to RP your character asking permission from Professor Flamsteed in his office before posting here after hours and may pretend that you received permission. Also, please keep in mind that while looking at the stars can be a romantic endeavor, that is not the purpose of the observatory and any mischief may result in points being deducted or detention.

No averages. Okay. But... their heights? Hmm... well, she wasn't sure if she had grown since the last time she measured her height, but she shrugged casually and replied, "5'2" here." She looked to Zander, wondering how tall HE was, and... heheheheh.
She continued giggling.
"Are we gonna add our heights together? Are you gonna make us lay on the floor in a line and do it that way?" HEHEHE. That would be SO funny and Zander would probably hate it, but she threw him a BIG cheery smile of encouragement as if to say, YEAH, LET'S DO IT.
"I'm totally game for that." Just so he KNEW.

Huh. Was Sophie really 5’2”? Was he surprised? Eh. She was only four inches shorter than he was, granted, he hadn’t measured his height since the summer and he was bound to have grown since then. He was sure of it. And what in Merlin’s name was Sophie Brown giggling about? ”I’m five foot six,” he replied still wondering what she was giggling about.
This wasn’t fair. He was curious, okay? AND He wanted to be in on the joke too!
… Wait. What?
Lay on the floor? Like… Human measuring tapes?? UH. He gave Sophie a ‘whuuut even’ kind of look, before sending his gaze back over to the Astronomy Professor. Was that his intention with the whole height thing?
And of course Sophie was totally game for that. It was totally up her alley. Yes, Sophie Brown, you ARE going to be gently elbowed for that. Not even sorry.

"5'2...5'6," the astronomer nodded while casually strolling to one side of the observatory and beckoning them to follow with his one hand. "That gives us nearly 11 feet between the both of you and should do just nicely." He then winked at Miss Brown and smirked. "Quite perceptive you are, Miss Brown."
Not that the Ravenclaw was not fully aware of this particular quality about herself already.
"The floor is perfectly clean, I can assure you," he continued with a grand gesture towards the floor. "So, shoes off. I don't believe either of you would like to have the other's shoes on top of your head."
Of course, they could also do this standing up - seeing as the distance between one's fingertips with their arms stretched to the sides was roughly the same as one's height....but that would not be nearly as interesting to watch.

Zander LOOKED surprised that she was so short, but should he really have been? Nuh uh, because he knew quite well how nice their height difference was for reasons... though it made other things a little more difficult.
Focus, Sophie Brown. Focus.
"M'always perceptive, professor," she replied to the professor gleefully, her eyes still locked on Zander and her smile growing by the second. So they WERE going to do that. HEHEHEHE. That was so fun. So much for being in a non-fun group, eh? No, this was the MOST fun, she was sure of it. "Head-to-head and feet-to-feet seems like a better idea." She didn't think Zander would have stinky feet or anything, but she didn't want hers near his head. Too risky. For other reasons.
And she gave him a suspicious sort of look to further her train of thought with that one as she obediently kicked off her shoes by the wall.
"I'll start us off," she chimed, laying down with her feet against the wall and streeetching out nicely, her hands making grabby hands for her fellow fifth year. "C'mere, Prefect Adair. Let's be scientists and do this thing." Peeking over at Flamsteed with her arms still outstretched, she added on through giggles, "S'a good thing Zander and I are best friends so this isn't weird. Did you know we're best friends? Consider me his Hogwarts emergency contact. For the future and all." Since Kevin was gone. "Figure you should know that since you're his Head of House." Just makin' conversation while waiting for Zander to come on over. No biggie. "We're gonna be a trio with Tobes pretty soon. Three of your favorites all together in a fun lil friend group. That's scary, isn't it? Maybe we'll start a club. Like a... like a 'Being Nerdy is Cool' club. You can join if you want, professor. We don't discriminate."
He fit the bill well enough.

….. So this was really going to be a thing then? Human measuring tapes. Had someone told him that he’d be spending the day lying on the floor with Sophie Brown in the observatory for a scientific purpose WITH Professor Flamsteed’s permission, Zander wouldn’t have believed them. But somehow strange things always happened here, right? Like always expect the unexpected.
And though he wasn’t particularly fond of the idea of being a human measuring tape, Sophie’s huge smile was softening him up to the idea. Darn it, Sophie Brown. Zander was trying so hard to look like he was against this idea entirely. But, he couldn’t keep a straight face. Okay, even he’d admit, it was a BIT funny. Or a lot. Okay, it was a lot funny. Happy? Still… he didn’t particularly want feet right on top of his head, so when Sophie spoke up to offer up an alternative, the Fifth Year was quick to jump on board. ”I think so too.”
He watched as she walked over to kick off her shoes, and then followed suit and did the same. ’Prefect Adair’ that got a quiet snort out of him as he walked over. How exactly were they keeping track of this? He hardly thought that scientists did this kind of thing, though. As he began to lay down on the floor and position himself, he listened curiously. What was she going on ab— Huh? He did have a stupid grin on face at ‘best friends’. Of course they had already talked about it before, but the fact that she called him that in front of Flamsteed, it meant she wasn’t just making it up… You know?
Wait what. ‘Being Nerdy is Cool’ club? HEY! ”Oi, I’m not nerdy!” He gently scooted up a bit so that his head bonked hers lightly. Pft. Nerdy? Zander Adair? Pft. Neverrrr.

The astronomer chuckled and folded his arms across his chest. "Sure, whatever launches your rockets," he mused as he watched the two get to work. Deciding to lean against the wall, Airey gave his leg a few pats to call Pebbles over, but of course she ignored his beckoning - like always. Obedience school had just not gone well for her...
What WAS it with students and wanting to label themselves as a favorite of a professor? It was...amusing to the man, if not a bit confusing. Back in his day in school it was astronomically uncool to be known as a favorite. Or professor's pet, as it were. Now, well, some seemed to take it up as a battleground of sorts. Of course, he was thinking of two former Hogwartians specifically, but kept such thoughts to himself.
"I have no favorites, Miss Brown," he winked. "Just respect and admiration for students and their academic achievements." Well, not purely academic as the man did like to encourage growth outside of the pages of a book. Anywhoo...
"You say that like being a nerd is a bad thing," he tisked at the prefect. Such a pity that the social constructs made that term such a....dirty word. If that was even the right way of explaining it. "When I refer to myself as a nerd, I do so in a word of acceptance." More people should embrace that side of themselves. Didn't everyone have that one thing they were passionate about? Something that they are willing to pour their passion into their entire life? He sure liked to think so.

Pffft. Flammy having no favorites. Pffffffffft. Yeah right. "You have to say that, just 'cause you wanna be a fair professor and all. But we know the contents of your heart." She gave him a playful finger-wag before swatting behind her at Zander's protesting. "You've admitted it to me before, that you're a cool nerd. Don't gimme that." Griiiiiiiiiin.
As Flamsteed went on to lightly lecture Zander once they were all in a nice line and their heads were touching, Soph got up and crawled around Zander to continue the line and line her feet up with his before laying down on her back again, streeetching out nicely and making sure she was true to her 5'2" frame.
"Me too, professor. Being a nerd is a good thing. Means you're interested 'n knowledgeable 'n passionate about things, and I don't see how there could be a problem with that. Like you, Zander," she sat up slightly to nod her head at him, "you're a nerd about... prefecting, astronomy, magical creatures, pizza, food in general... friends, 'specially me..." Hehehehe. "S'a good thing. Y'gotta own it." Like she and Tobes did.

Zander poked his head up for a brief moment, watching his Professor-- wait. Was Flamsteed trying to call the rock over? Uh. Maybe all those stars had really gone to his head or something. Fumes from mars, maybe? First treating the tie as if it was a human being and now treating a rock like it was a cruppy? Something was real weird about this. Even Zander thought so. And that was saying something. Ahem.
At the sight of Sophie's hand-waving, the Gryffindor shook his head (though she couldn't see it because... anyways) "I only said that to make you happy." Or because she had walked him into a trap or something? Either one of those worked. But the latter meant that he had to admit to being defeated.
AND Of course, Zander had accidentally touched a testy subject or something as he listened to his Professor lightly reprimand him for the way he referred to 'being a nerd' as a bad thing. Oops. He waited as Sophie crawled over to put her head against his again, before getting up himself and doing the same. "I.. I didn't mean that it was a bad thing." Well... Sort of. "I like all of those things, but... I dunno, doesn't being nerdy mean you spend all your time in the library? And that you actually enjoy homework and stuff?" He waited for Sophie to crawl over again, before doing the same and making his way over to her other side.
"And I don't do those things," he laid down once more, letting his head just barely touch Soph's.
