Located to the left of the Astronomy classroom's door is a a large circular black framed announcement board. Walk too far to the right or left and its glass surface resembles the phases of the moon, so you must stand directly in front of it to be able to read it. This is the place to find information on class times, homework assignments, and any other Astronomy related announcements Professor Flamsteed feels students should know. Be sure to check back often to make sure you don't miss something important!

There are two options for this homework. Please only complete ONE of them for credit. Doing more will not earn you double the house points. Extra credit is available to outstanding efforts and creativity.

⌦ option one (worth 10 pts)
Using your textbook, answer the following:
Define the term “equinox” using your own words.

Define the term “solstice” using your own words.

Define the term “cross-quarter day” using your own words and how does it related to Halloween?

What is “Samhain” and how does it relate to astronomy?

What are the seven October constellations?

OOC: This is a straight forward question and answer option. Please please PLEASE use your own words and do not just copy paste from Wikipedia or another site <3
⌦ option two (worth 10 pts)
Select one of the constellations discussed in class and design a Halloween costumed based on it.

OOC: This is a graphics inclined option. You may hand draw, Photoshop manip, or Polyvore to create your costume.

⌦ RP EXTRA CREDIT (worth 5 points)
Come enjoy the Halloween party in the Spirit Room You'll receive further instructions upon arrival. You are encouraged to come in costume - it IS Halloween after all. Bonus points if you come wearing your designed costume or any astronomy related costume

Not sure what is going on with Photobucket, but lots of the homework submissions and links from my lesson you guys shared are just not working (Anna Banana alerted me of this issue with her homework and it looks to be a pretty consistent issue all around). Says the image has either been deleted or removed

I'm keeping a tally of member's who have Photobucket accounts that are being real pooper scoopers right now and I'll shoot you guys a PM once I've gone through everything.

Not to worry though! No one is getting punished because a website is being icky <3

Juuuuuuuust a heads up if you get a PM from me in the semi near future :3

Nothing like some stargazing to help ease nerves and enjoy the warmer nights, right? Now that you know the official 88 constellations, go out on the grounds or utilize the Astronomy Tower and see if you can spot them in the night sky! You may work alone or with friends for this assignment. I would like you to try and identify AT LEAST 3 constellations - and make sure that at least 1 is a classical one. You do not need to use your telescopes for this as you can see constellations with the naked eye, but may bring it with you if you if you want to try and get a closer look at celestial objects.

OOC: This is a straight up RP assignment and you need a minimum of 5 posts to receive full credit. In your posts you should try to be as specific as possible about HOW your character was able to identify the constellation. If it is more IC for your character to struggle and not find anything, that is also fine. There are other ways for your character to show they are knowledgeable about the constellations without finding them Get creative and have some fun with it!

Be careful with which constellations you pick though! Some (like those in the southern hemisphere) will not be visible from Hogwarts!

Select 3 constellations and write a short paragraph about each of them. Your paragraph should include a brief summary of the mythology and history behind the constellations, its brightest stars, whether it is a classical or modern constellation, and any asterisms that are associated with it.

OOC: One short paragraph equates to about 5 complete sentences each. Do not just copy paste your answers from the internet - I will be checking.
