Default Potions Laboratory (For Only Workshop)

It's the same laboratory, except for the rostrum. Professor Culloden removes it for the Workshop Meetings.

For those who couldn't make it to the first meeting, there are two big piles of two different books sitting neatly in the corner. You are welcome to take one from each and keep it.
OOC: I'll keep the thread open. If you guys want to, you can RP taking the books/studying for the workshop etc. In short, this thread is for the workshop. For any other brewing exercise, please use the regular Laboratory thread. Thank you!

Text Cut: First Meeting
There is a big pile of two different books on the teacher's desk, and Professor Culloden can't be seen behind them, as he is sitting on the chair. He's had a nice day, and therefore is very cheerful. He is also holding a note that probably has who's creating what. He greets everyone as they enter. He's eager to start and hopes everyone else is, too!

Cosgrach smiled brightly at them as they came in. Only Andrew was missing, but he figured the boy would come soon. He checked his watch. Well, better to start now. Andrew would have extra time, Cosgrach could allow that much to these extraordinary students.

Hehe.

"Welcome, everyone," he said, "please wear the protective gear," he indicated to a pile of robes, googles and gloves on the teacher's desk, "and pick a desk. I hope you've brought your cauldron?" Although he would provide them with the ingredients they had came up with (they were on the teacher's desk as well on a tray), he didn't have that many cauldrons.

"You can begin with your first steps, then I'll assist you with the process and tell you where to change.

"The only rule is: always watch your potion and if you sense something is off with it, call me. If it looks like it's going to explode, just vanish it."
They didn't need to sacrifice themselves to see if it'd explode or not, thank you.

"Any questions?"


OOC: I'll post twice a day [I hope!] but you don't have to sweat it. ^__^ Basically, they will try the full recipe out together and correct things that 'go wrong'. You guys can be creative with it too, as long as nothing drastic happens (as he' already put protective spells up). Hope we can have fun with it!

Default psh- Austin's been here the whole time.

Austin pulled out his notebook, and turned to the page that had the most scribbles. This 'class' was one he had been looking forward to all term. He had spent countless hours at the library figuring out the best ingredients and steps. He began pulling out his cauldron, and equipment, and grabbed the necessary ingredients. "Okay," He said to himself. "Just follow your steps. You've got this." Taking a deep breath, Austin began creating his potion.

The first step he had written down was to crush 2 Valerian roots in a stone and pestle. So, he pulled out the stone and pestle, cleaned it using 'Auguamenti', and put in the roots. He didn't write down how fine he should crush the roots, so he just decided to go until he felt time to stop. Later on in his instructions, he had said to crush into a fine powder, so maybe now was the time to crush the roots into a powder that was not so fine. He crushed until he had gotten a coarse powder, and decided that was going to do.

Turning back to his scribbled list, he checked over his steps before continuing. Once he had done that, he added one drop of lethe river water into the Valerian root. It said to stir with a metal stick, and he hoped that would do. A wooden stick had sounded too mundane, and he figured this potion needed to be magical. It was taking away dreams after all. Maybe if this worked out, he would make a potion that would take away nightmares and replace them with pleasant dreams. But first he had to make this work. So he stirred a few times in the pestle to make sure the drop had mixed in, and set it aside.

The next step he had was to put water in the cauldron and set the heat to low. So he did that, making sure to clean his cauldron out first, and grabbed his sophosphorous bean. Crush bean over water so the juices dripped into the water, then add Valerian root. Sounds easy enough, so that's just what he did. He grabbed his knife, and used the flat side of the blade to crush the bean over his water. He added about 4 or 5 drops into the water before stopping, but the water began to bubble. "That's strange." He checked the temperature, but it was still set to low. And when he turned back to his water mixture, the bubbling had stopped. The teacher did say to ask if something seemed off, but he had just started, and he really didn't know much about the bean juices. For all he knew, that bubbling was supposed to happen. So he ignored it and added the Valerian root.

But he should have talked to the professor. As soon as the root hit the water, a foul stench let out from his cauldron. He immediately put his sleeve up to his nose and rose his hand for the professor. "Professor Culloden! I don't think this was supposed to happen!"

SPOILER!!: Dreamless Sleep potion

1 Drop of Lethe River Water
2 Valerian root
1 Sopophorus bean
Powdered Moonstone

1.Crush 2 Valerian roots in a stone and pestle.
2. Add 1 drop of Lethe River water to the Valerian Roots.
3. Stir with metal stick
4. Set aside and add water to cauldron. Turn heat to low.
5. Crush bean over water so the juices drip into the cauldron.
6. Add Valerian Root mixture
7. Stir clockwise twice with metal stick
8. Wait 12 minutes. In the meantime crush the moonstone into a fine powder in the clean stone and pestle. The cauldron mixture should gradually turn white.
9. After time is up, turn heat to high and immediately add the moonstone powder. The cauldron should immediately start to glow.
10. Once there is a glow like the moon at night, turn off the heat and bottle once cooled.

Zeke and Tobias followed after him into the potions lab and their places. So we had two Gryffindors and two Hufflepuffs, but not the badger Benny most expected to be there. Adi usually always beat him there to anything potions related, his best friend a bit more proficient in the area. But he hadn't arrived ye--Oh there he was. His friend came in and greeted them all before slipping in beside him.

"Oh..." he said simply as Adi explained why he had been running late. Seemed falling asleep was rather common these days, the Gryffindor remembered what had happened in the reading room the other day.Benny didn't say anything further as Professor Cullodeon began the workshop and the fifth year wanted to be ready and focused. He took out his list of ingrediants before moving to retrieve the safety gear and putting it on.

Croakoa for lift
Daisy
Dried Billywig Stings for levitation
2 Eagle Owl Feathers
3 Flying Seahorses
5 drops of Fluxweed Oil
Octopus Powder to increase the strength of the potion

Yeah, he had his cauldron, the item in question now set upon the unlit burner ready to go, filled with the needed water from the sink. Benny wasn't going to risk using Angel's wand that he had borrowed unless he absolutely had to. Which he had to with lighting the burner so he took a deep breath and took out the borrowed wand. "Incendio..." he cast, grateful when it worked so far with no issue. With two steps down, the Gryffindor glanced at his list of steps to see what was next.

SPOILER!!: Steps

1. Fill Cauldron with water
2. Light burner and set on medium heat
3. Crush Croakoa in mortar and pestle. Add daisy and blend it together as crushing.
4. Add mixture to cauldron when temperature is 32 degrees C.


Right...crushing. Benny tentatively cast a "scourgify", doing it twice to ensure the spellwork properly cleaned it, given the possibility to trouble on a wand not your own. Then he went to work crushin first the croakoa and then it and the daisy. When he was satisfied with the consistency, he added it to his cauldron as directed by his own choice on the matter.

So far, it seemed to be doing well enough.

Okay, so no more conversing with the bestie as they were getting started. Adi was reallllly excited and nervous about brewing the potion he had come up with. He DID expect something to go wrong, you know. His eyes shifted back to Benny when Culloden mentioned explosions. Erm, the Hufflepuff was taking a risk taking a table so close to the Gryffindor given his relationship with blowing stuff up. Heh.

Once Adi pulled on his protective gear, he moved over to grab the necessary ingredients for his concoction then moved back to set them all neatly on his table. He set up his cauldron before casting the Scouring Charm on it.

Next up... one cauldronful of water. "Aguamenti!'' The Puffer happily watched his cauldron full up. "Finite!'' Now he needed powdered moonstone. Two pinches to be exact. He grabbed the necessary amount, added it to the water and reached for his wand once more. "Incendio!''

He was onto the next step which was heating for five minutes on medium heat.

SPOILER!!: Creatures Calming Solution!

Ingredients:
- Powdered Moonstone
- Syrup of Hellebore
- Powdered unicorn horn
- 1 Shrivelfig fruit
- 3 sprigs of Peppermint
- 3 porcupine quills
- 4 fairy wings
- 3 Doxy Eggs

Steps:
1. Add two pinches of Powdered Moonstone to a cauldronful of water.
2. Heat for five minutes on medium before turning heat off.
3. Add nine drops of Syrup of Hellebore and to pinches of powdered unicorn horn.
4. Crush Shrivelfig fruit and add seven drops of juice. Potion should be lime green now.
5. Stir five times clockwise while heating on medium.
6. Add sprigs of peppermint and porcupine quills.
7. Stir five times counter clockwise.
8. Add fairy wings and doxy eggs.
9. Sir five times clockwise then five times counter clockwise.
10. Reduce heat to lowest and stew for 20 minutes before turning off heat. Potion should now be light orange.

Haha, wow.

Look at that; she had been right about the four who would be joining her. Everyone got waves then it was time to start brewing her potion. Hopefully hers wouldn't cause any KABOOMS. Well, not literal ones...but still. Lux wanted everything to go perfectly since this was the first potion of many that she hoped to invent.

After taking out her potions supplies and cauldron, she made sure to give everything a good Scourgifying before putting on her pair of clean gloves. She had this cleanliness thing down perfectly by now. Consulting her potion recipe, the first step was to fill her cauldron with 700 mL of water. That was measured out carefully and added before she lit a fire and turned the burner on to maximum.

The water needed to come to a boil before she could move on with her potion.

SPOILER!!: Recipe
Lux's Chocolate Frog Potion

Ingredients:
  • 700 mL Water
  • 7 Chocolate Frogs
  • 7 squares of chocolate
  • 7 Leeches
  • 7 Mint leaves
  • 7 Kneazle tongues

Procedure:
  1. Add 700mL of water to cauldron
  2. Heat on maximum until water comes to a boil then lower to minimum
  3. Add 4 of the Chocolate Frogs then stir 10 times clockwise
  4. Add the leeches and stir 15 times counter-clockwise
  5. Add the remaining Chocolate Frogs and stir 10 times clockwise
  6. Turn heat to medium
  7. Add the kneazle tongues and stir 5 times clockwise
  8. Shred the chocolate squares and add to potion
  9. Chop the mint leaves and add to potion
  10. Stir 20 times clockwise

Protective gear? NO PROBLEM. Toby was instantly all suited up and kitted out and READY. TO. GO. In fact, the protective gear made him even more excitable 'cause it meant BUSINESS, y'know? Yeeeaaahhhh.

Toby didn't have any questions at all, so he set up his cauldron and potions equipment and CLEEEEEANED IT ALL UP, and lay out his heavily annotated original recipe draft on his workstation before heading up to collect his ingredients. Skipping all the way, because he was Tobias Fuller-freaking-Thompson.

OKAY SO. He had EVERYTHING. And a CAULDRON. He was READY. FIRST STEPS.

Water. EASY. He had his BEAKER with the MEASURING LINES on it. It was already clean and ready to go so Toby simply added an enthusiastic "AGUAMENTI!" and filled it on up. It was DIFFICULT to really see how much water there was, because his hands just WERE NOT STAYING STILL and he was impatient which was probably not GOOD in a workshop like this, but also beyond his range of thought right now. So Toby chucked the water into the cauldron and bounced manically on his toes before lighting a LOOOOOOW FLAME.

Soooooooo... that was two steps, which counted as FIRST steps. Did Culloden want them to stop there? 'Cause Toby wanted to KEEP GOING. Sooooooooooo he did. After JUST ABOUT REMEMBERING to pull on his gloves (and only because it said to do so in one of his annotations), he grabbed the porcupine quills and dried nettles and began to alternate between dropping them in, starting with one nettle, then a quill........... and then a long pause JUST IN CASE their was a CULLODEN who had anything to say.

LALALA. This was cool. COOL. He INVENTED this recipe; how AWESOME?! YEAH! He... should probably have been keeping a closer eye on the cauldron, to be honest, but THIS KID was TOO HYPER TO DO THAT. NAHHHH. Just bouncing. YEP.

SPOILER!!: POTION NOTES
Anti-Jealousy Potion
Effects: When consumed, the drinker will no longer feel jealous or envious or any of the associated negative feelings. Hopefully. Duration of effects relative to amount of potion taken. Side effects may include ending up in a dazed, almost dreamlike state. Taking too much potion/taking it too often will cause forgetfulness and absentmindedness and a lack of sensitivity.

Ingredients:
7 dried nettle leaves
7 porcupine quills
1 drop Lethe river water
3 drops fluxweed oil
1 dried billywig sting (crushed)
1 valerian root (finely chopped)
100ml butterscotch

Instructions:
1. Fill cauldron with 500ml of water
2. Light a fire and set flame to low

3. Add one dried nettle, then one porcupine quill, continue alternative until they're all in the potion
CHECKPOINT: Potion should be orange
4. Set flame to medium
5. Stir continuously anti-clockwise for thirty seconds with a metal stirrer
6. Set flame to high
7. Add the drop of Lethe river water (make sure to just use ONE drop)
8. Add one drop of fluxweed oil, wait ten seconds, add another drop, wait ten more seconds, add the final drop
CHECKPOINT: Potion should be yellow
9. Leave the potion to boil for ten minutes - prepare billywig sting and valerian root while waiting
10. Set flame to low
11. Sprinkle the crushed billywig sting into the potion
12. Add chopped valerian root
CHECKPOINT: Potion should turn a very deep red
13. Pour butterscotch into the potion while stirring anticlockwise with metal stirrer until it's all added
FINISHED: Potion should be a very dark pink, slightly thick. Should taste sweet and not at all bitter.

Cosgrach wasn't going to sit down during the whole workshop, or so he planned. He wanted to be able to see every cauldron, but before his eyes warned him, his nose did.

He quickly turned when Austin called him, and wand in hand, covered the short distance to the boy's desk.

He examined it briefly, then pulled out his own notes that he had scribbled on the boy's original letter.

"Did you crush the Valerian root well?" He paused, then said "And I think it should be two beans in there. If you want it to be potent, I mean."

After Austin, Cosgrach would take no chances. Although the charms should keep them safe until someone messed up BIG time (and none of their recipes looked that terrible), but he liked being safe, because these were underage kids. It was a completely casual question. Cosgrach didn't think daisy would have any effect, and fluxweed was questionable, but he was always open to ideas. Maybe Benny thought of something he couldn't.

To say Toby was excited would clearly be an understatement.

Cosgrach, even though he had to correct the second step of the kid, let him do his... thing for his own selfish amusement not to crush his spirits, though he doubted anything could sadden Toby now. Once he stopped, the man had to hide his small smile and walk over to him.

"I think it's better if you start with a high fire," he said, "because we want to tone down the... fury of jealousy." Right? Gradually lowering the fire and all that jazz?



OOC: You can go on with the two-three more steps after your characters answer him, you don't have to wait for my post [unless your character do need him, of course].

Oh, hello there, Professor C!

Nodding, Lux took note of what he was telling her. So besides the water thing her recipe was okay - well, except for a few steps that needed switching around. "Got it, sir!" After turning off the burner, she vanished the water. The heat would be turned on again in a moment. This was the first time she ever had to vanish a potion, but as it was an experiment it didn't really come as a surprise to her.

Using a clean glass, she filled it with water One... Two... Three... Four... Five... Six... Seven... times, carefully pouring each glass into the cauldron. The flame was re-lit and the heat was placed on maximum again.

Consulting her recipe, Lux erased the steps in question and re-wrote them into the new order so that she could continue when the water reached maximum. That only took a few minutes of waiting after making the corrections, and the burner was lowered to minimum. Now time for the leeches. BLEH. She made a face because they were always gross in her mind; the creatures sucked BLOOD. O_O

Here goes nothing. One... Two... Three... Four... Five... Six... Seven... leeches were dropped in one by one as she made sure not to splash the water. Last thing she wanted right now was to get a burn from her potion; that wouldn't be very nice at all. With her clean wooden spoon, she stirred 1... 2... 3... 4... 5... 6... 7... 8... 9... 10... 11... 12... 13... 14... 15... times counter-clockwise. Once done she cleaned the spoon even though she would need it again in a moment.

About a minute into his five minutes of wait, Culloden was addressing him. Adi tilted his head as he considered the suggestion. Of course the man had WAAAAAY more experience with potions that he did so he was not about to question the man. He simply nodded but then for the purpose of his curiosity, he added, "Why is nine too much, Professor?'' This information could come in handy for any future potion experiments, ya know.

Sooooo. There were still a few minutes left and the Hufflepuff kept a sharp eye on his watch. Countdown to the seconds! Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one! The five minutes were up! Time to move on!

The burner's heat was extinguished. With his freshly Scourgified dropper, SIX drops of Syrup of Hellebore were added. Next, he grabbed two pinches of the powdered unicorn horn. Finally, he grabbed the wooden stirrer, cast the Scouring Charm once more and stirred one, two, three, four, five times in a clockwise direction.

There! Steps done as Professor Cool has instructed. The fifth year took the Shrivelfig fruit from his table. Time to juice this thing!

SPOILER!!: Creatures Calming Solution!

Ingredients:
- Powdered Moonstone
- Syrup of Hellebore
- Powdered unicorn horn
- 1 Shrivelfig fruit
- 3 sprigs of Peppermint
- 3 porcupine quills
- 4 fairy wings
- 3 Doxy Eggs

Steps:
1. Add two pinches of Powdered Moonstone to a cauldronful of water.
2. Heat for five minutes on medium before turning heat off.
3. Add nine sixdrops of Syrup of Hellebore and two pinches of powdered unicorn horn then stir clockwise five times with wooden stirrer.

4. Crush Shrivelfig fruit and add seven drops of juice. Potion should be lime green now.
5. Stir five times clockwise while heating on medium.
6. Add sprigs of peppermint and porcupine quills.
7. Stir five times counter clockwise.
8. Add fairy wings and doxy eggs.
9. Sir five times clockwise then five times counter clockwise.
10. Reduce heat to lowest and stew for 20 minutes before turning off heat. Potion should now be light orange.

He made sure to write down the professor's notes into his notebook, and started again. He made sure to clean out his cauldron and stone and pestle before starting, though. He knew better than to start with a dirty cauldron. Upon looking around, he found that the majority of his peers were not only older, but further along on their potions. Actually, when he really looked, they were all older than he was. He felt a little embarrassed at that fact, but Professor Culloden didn't seem to even notice this fact. He was treating everyone equally.

Enough of that nonsense. His mother's voice echoed in his ears. You know you're just as good as all of them. So he turned back to his cauldron and tried again. He grabbed two Valerian roots, and this time, crushed them into a fine powder. It looks like fine powder was the way to go when crushing anything. He made a mental note about that and continued crushing. Once it was done, he grabbed the small vial of Lethe River water, and added one drop. He took the metal stick, cleaned it, and mixed the powder a few times. Then he put that aside and added water to his cauldron. Turning the heat to low, he grabbed two sopophorus beans this time. He crushed them, one by one, with the side of his blade. He dripped the juices of each bean in, and then added his Valerian Root mixture. He held his breath, but thankfully, nothing smelled.

SPOILER!!: Dreamless sleep potion
1 Drop of Lethe River Water
2 Valerian root
1 2 Sopophorus bean

6. Add Valerian Root mixture
7. Stir clockwise twice with metal stick
8. Wait 12 minutes. In the meantime crush the moonstone into a fine powder in the clean stone and pestle. The cauldron mixture should gradually turn white.
9. After time is up, turn heat to high and immediately add the moonstone powder. The cauldron should immediately start to glow.
10. Once there is a glow like the moon at night, turn off the heat and bottle once cooled.

Austin looked up as Professor Culloden walked by. Nods of approval were always good! He knew he was as good as these older people. Nobody could match his potions potential. Plus, he was the only one who had a potion that messed up so far. Which meant he had room to improve. As apposed to all of these older people. They would never learn if they never failed. They were just making potions but Austin, Austin was learning.

He proudly turned back to his notes. Stir clockwise 12 times with metal stick. He took out his metal stick, cleaned it with a rag, and put it in his cauldron. One... Two... Three... Four... Five... Six... Seven... Eight... Nine... Ten... Eleven... Twelve... He had decided on twelve times because midnight was twelve O' clock. And, upon some research, the moon seemed to be at its peek at midnight. Since this was a Dreamless sleep potion, relating to the moon was important. So twelve times it was, and thankfully, there was no foul smell, nor was there any loud bangs. Which was a good thing. Austin almost jumped up and down with excitement, but that would mean the potential for bumping into something on his desk, so he kept his cool instead.

Moving on...

Wait 12 minutes, and in the meantime crush moonstone. Again, he chose the 12 minutes based on the whole midnight thing, but he figured the 12 minutes would counteract with the 12 stirs. Twelve hours in the night with the moon, and 12 hours of the day. During the day time, one had to wait for night, and for the moon. Similar to the 12 minutes you would need to wait for this potion. He set his muggle timer to 12 minutes, and pulled his stone and pestle towards him. He cleaned it, and put in the moonstone. Making sure to keep an eye on his cauldron, he began crushing it into a fine powder. The mixture in the cauldron was supposed to gradually turn white. Kind of like the moon against the dark night sky. Thankfully everything he did was right, because the potion did gradually turn white as the 12 minutes went on. Perfect

Alright so it might seem a little wonky but it had made sense before. The daisy...he wasn't quite sure of at the moment since he couldn't find the reference.

At least the dried billywig stings which were the next step made a better fit with their connection to floating.

Speaking of which...

Benny cast a cleaning spell on his stiring rod to be ready to stir. He really hoped it was clean. The Gryffindor then added one billywig sting before stiring once clockwise. Another billywig sting went in...another clockwise stir. With the final billywig sting added, the last clockwise stir was given and the fifth year lion glanced at his watch. if all went well, it should change color in a few minutes.

5. Add billywig stings (3) into potion one at a time, following each addition with a clockwise stir.
6. Wait 2 -3 minutes for a color change so you know its ready to move on to the next step.

OKAY. So far so good.

Lux was very pleased to see her potion cooperating so far. This was a lot of fun because she had no idea how things would turn out and it was nice to experiment. It was highly unlikely that anything would go seriously wrong; besides she would be surprised if Culloden hadn't placed protection spells in the room.

Picking up one of the Chocolate Frog boxes, Lux opened the container and carefully ripped the candy in half with her hands. It would be no good if the chocolate escaped, and it wasn't as if being cut in half changed the amount added. After adding both pieces to the cauldron, she proceeded to do the same thing another three times. Now time to stir everything again.

With the wooden spoon, she stirred the potion 1... 2... 3... 4... 5... 6... 7... 8... 9... 10... times clockwise. Next went the 7 Kneazle tongues and Lux had to try her hardest not to make a face as each was plopped in. She WAS getting better about the whole squeamish thing. There just were some pretty gross potions ingredients. With her spoon she stirred 1... 2... 3... 4... 5... times clockwise.

SPOILER!!: Recipe
Ingredients:
  • 7 glasses of water
  • 7 Chocolate Frogs
  • 7 squares of chocolate
  • 7 Leeches
  • 7 Mint leaves
  • 7 Kneazle tongues

Procedure:
  1. Add 7 glasses of water to cauldron
  2. Heat on maximum until water comes to a boil then lower to minimum
  3. Add the leeches and stir 15 times counter-clockwise
  4. Add 4 of the Chocolate Frogs then stir 10 times clockwise
  5. Add the kneazle tongues and stir 5 times clockwise
  6. Turn heat to medium
  7. Add the remaining Chocolate Frogs and stir 10 times clockwise
  8. Shred the chocolate squares and add to potion
  9. Chop the mint leaves and add to potion
  10. Stir 20 times clockwise

Austin watched his potion gradually turn white, and wiped his forehead with his arm. Crushing this moonstone was hard work. The Valerian roots were easy, but this stone was extremely difficult. Maybe next time he'll do this step before starting this potion. It was a lot of pressure to get this done in 12 minutes. But despite the pressure, he finished it with a minute or two left on the clock. So he took this time to check his notes. Turn heat to high and immediately add moonstone. When he thought up this step, he figured the high heat would quickly dissolve the powder. You wouldn't want to drink the potion with gritty bits. He didn't at least, and this potion was mainly for him. He had nightmares all the time, and he wasn't getting enough sleep because of them.

Ding!

Once the timer had gone off, Austin turned up the heat under his cauldron, and added the moonstone. He hoped his potion would have a nice glow to it, but instead it turned a murky green color. Which was strange. His calculations told him that the potion should glow from the stone. He turned his heat off and raised his hand to call the professor over. "Professor, my potion's turned an odd green color." He looked back to his notes. "By my calculations, it should be glowing." Hopefully no one laughed at him. Sure, they were caught up in their own potions, but everyone was older, and it even seemed that they were doing alright. Had he done something wrong? Why was everyone else having an easier time than him? He was always so great at potions. Almost every class ended with him having an awesome potion. But now he was having issues. He huffed in frustration. The last thing he wanted to do was to have to start all over.

Using the handle of the silver knife, Adi crushed the shrivelfig fruit, collected the juice in his dropper then added seven drops to the mixture in the cauldron. It was supposed to turn lime green now... come on, lime green!

Blue sparks began to fly from the top of Adi's potion. He backed away immediately. Who knew if those sparks were harmful. Good gosh. Did this mean he would have to start all over with the brewing? Best consult the Potions master... and fast!

"Uh, Professor? Were seven drops of Shrivelfig juice too much? Is there anyway I can fix this?''
He gestured nervously towards his cauldron as his eyes moved towards Benny. Best stay clear, Dragon.

After adding a little something to his notes, Toby again used his wand to adjust the flame under the cauldron, this time setting it to MEDIUM. Then, grabbing a metal stirrer, ALREADY CLEANED like a couple of seconds ago, he lowered it into the cauldron and started stirring in an anti-clockwise direction. VIGOROUSLY. 'CAUSE ENERGY. Now he COULDN'T watch the potion 'cause he was watching the TIME... but it was probably AAAAAAAAAALL GOOOOOD.


SPOILER!!: POTION NOTES
Anti-Jealousy Potion
Effects: When consumed, the drinker will no longer feel jealous or envious or any of the associated negative feelings. Hopefully. Duration of effects relative to amount of potion taken. Side effects may include ending up in a dazed, almost dreamlike state. Taking too much potion/taking it too often will cause forgetfulness and absentmindedness and a lack of sensitivity.

Ingredients:
7 dried nettle leaves
7 porcupine quills
1 drop Lethe river water
3 drops fluxweed oil
1 dried billywig sting (crushed)
1 valerian root (finely chopped)
100ml butterscotch

Instructions:
1. Fill cauldron with 500ml of water
2. Light a fire and set flame to low --- SET FLAME TO HIGH INSTEAD OF LOW

3. Add one dried nettle, then one porcupine quill, continue alternative until they're all in the potion
CHECKPOINT: Potion should be orange --- POTION IS BURNT ORANGE
4. Set flame to medium[/s]
5. Stir continuously anti-clockwise for thirty seconds with a metal stirrer
6. Set flame to high --- SET FLAME TO LOW INSTEAD OF HIGH - reverse flame intensity
7. Add the drop of Lethe river water (make sure to just use ONE drop)
8. Add one drop of fluxweed oil, wait ten seconds, add another drop, wait ten more seconds, add the final drop
CHECKPOINT: Potion should be yellow
9. Leave the potion to boil for ten minutes - prepare billywig sting and valerian root while waiting
10. Set flame to low
11. Sprinkle the crushed billywig sting into the potion
12. Add chopped valerian root
CHECKPOINT: Potion should turn a very deep red
13. Pour butterscotch into the potion while stirring anticlockwise with metal stirrer until it's all added
FINISHED: Potion should be a very dark pink, slightly thick. Should taste sweet and not at all bitter.

The movement caught Cosgrach's attention, and he was by her side in the next moment.

He frowned to himself, not because he didn't know WHAT but WHY. Her potion should have been going well... he muttered "Excessive stirring causes this...", audible enough for her too, "but I think you stirred enough..." But her potion suggested the opposite, and as he was muttering, it began to move faster.

"Okay, you should vanish it, and start over. First, don't stir after you add the first 4 chocolate frogs and watch for a while. If it looks problematic, stir the ten times and don't stir after kneazle tongues."

He had faith in her, though, so he didn't wait for her to do it all.

Cosgrach was by Austin after he told Lux what to do, and he quickly looked at his recipe to identify the problem. He frowned to himself for a moment, but his face was at ease at the next.

"Did you directly add the Moonstone? I think it's better if you sprinkle it..." And, as much as it hurt him to say so, he added "You need to start over, because we can't retrieve the added Moonstone. But, I think it shouldn't cause more problems." So there was that. Start over, sprinkle the powder, and be done with it.

Professor to the rescue!

Sparks usually meant 'wrong ingredient', and Cosgrach didn't have to examine his potion too much to know that. Instead, he simply vanished it to save Adi, and said "Not too much, but possibly at the wrong step. Try switching that with Porcupine quills. Switch the steps of them. Also... heat on low. Porcupine likes low better."

Oh no. Oh no. Oh no.

This was BAD. Staring at her cauldron as the potion began moving in a clockwise direction, Lux flailed her arms. She'd have to poof the potion and start all over again like Professor Culloden suggested. That would be the second time during the lab. Oh well, it was a good learning experience!

Nodding, she vanished the potion while taking note of what the Professor told her. Originally she assumed that stirring clockwise was a good idea because it would strengthen the effect of the chocolate and kneazle tongue...but maybe it was best not to. That way the chocolate could fully melt and blend in on it's own.

It was a good thing she always had a stash of Chocolate Frogs on her!

This time when she reached the part with the 4 Chocolate Frogs, instead of stirring she watched and waited until they had fully dissolved. Nothing happened except the potion was now brown. That was a good sign as it meant that the Chocolate Frogs were well blended into the potion. Pleased with herself, she added 7 kneazle tongues. With a sigh of relief, she turned the burner up to medium.

SPOILER!!: Recipe
Ingredients:
  • 7 glasses of water
  • 7 Chocolate Frogs
  • 7 squares of chocolate
  • 7 Leeches
  • 7 Mint leaves
  • 7 Kneazle tongues

Procedure:
  1. Add 7 glasses of water to cauldron
  2. Heat on maximum until water comes to a boil then lower to minimum
  3. Add the leeches and stir 15 times counter-clockwise
  4. Add 4 of the Chocolate Frogs (the potion should turn brown)
  5. Add the kneazle tongues
  6. Turn heat to medium
  7. Add the remaining Chocolate Frogs and stir 10 times clockwise
  8. Shred the chocolate squares and add to potion
  9. Chop the mint leaves and add to potion
  10. Stir 20 times clockwise

Austin's head whipped around when he heard a boy's cry for Professor Culloden. His cauldron was spewing blue sparks, which was strange. But the professor looked calm, so that meant there was no need to worry. It was nice to have someone else's potion mess up though. He wasn't the only one whose potion was going haywire, which was perfect. It made him just like the rest of them; him being younger made no difference.

Sighing he turned back to his cauldron. His potion needed to be scrapped, and since he didn't know the spell that erases potions, he had to physically dump it. Merlin's beard He thought. Wiping his brow with his arm, he dumped out his cauldron in the nearby sink.

He took a deep breath, looking at his empty, and clean, equipment. "Time to get started." He muttered, rolling up his sleeves. He went through his list again, crushing and adding ingredients. Since Austin had a better idea of what he was doing, making the potion was easier this time. He was more confident in what he was doing, mainly because he knew what was going to happen. Once his timer went off, he turned up the heat and sprinkled the moonstone into the mixture. Thankfully, his potion began to glow. Everything was going perfectly this time. He may not even need to restart, which would be good on his muscles.

He turned off the heat and waited a few minutes. Once it had cooled, he put it in a small vial from he pulled from his bag. When held up to the light, the potion looked white. But when he cupped it against his eye, to hold it in the darkness, it gave off a nice glow. "Professor!" He called out excitedly. "I think I just made a new potion."

SPOILER!!: Dreamless Sleep Potion
1 Drop of Lethe River Water
2 Valerian root
1 2 Sopophorus bean
Powdered Moonstone

1.Crush 2 Valerian roots in a stone and pestle into a fine powder.
2. Add 1 drop of Lethe River water to the Valerian Roots.
3. Stir with metal stick
4. Set aside and add water to cauldron. Turn heat to low.
5. Crush beans over water so the juices drip into the cauldron.
6. Add Valerian Root mixture
7. Stir clockwise twice with metal stick
8. Wait 12 minutes. In the meantime crush the moonstone into a fine powder in the clean stone and pestle. The cauldron mixture should gradually turn white.
9. After time is up, turn heat to high and immediately add sprinkle the moonstone powder. The cauldron should immediately start to glow.
10. Once there is a glow like the moon at night, turn off the heat and bottle once cooled.

Potions could be so complicates sometimes, huh? Adi nodded slowly as he tried to process the information given by Culloden. Okay, poisonous. He got that but it was kind of difficult for him to understand WHY some amounts went well with others while some did not. "Thanks for letting me know, Professor.'' Adi grinned. A bit confused he might be bit he could see Culloden later about that, right? Or maybe even read up in a textbook or two.

His cauldron was going to explode, wasn't it? Best vanish it realllllllly quickly but the Potions Master was a whole lot faster and did the job before Adi even had the chance to raise his wand.

And now he had to start all over -___-

"Thanks, Professor,'' Adi said a bit glumly. He needed to remember that this was his first attempt at brewing something that he came up with and it was very likely stuff like this would happen. Anywayyy... "Alright. I'll try switching those up.'' He managed a small grin before going to repeat the steps he had completed before: Cauldronful of water, powdered moonstone, heat for five minutes, turn heat off, hellebore syrup, powdered unicorn horn, stir clockwise.

Now to make the switch! One, two , three porcupine quills were added and the burner re-lit on low while he stirred five times clockwise with the once again cleaned stirrer. Everything seemed to be going well... for now.

"I think that did the trick,'
' Adi said to Culloden as he reached for another Shrivelfig fruit which he proceeded to juice then add seven drops. Lime green now? Pleaseeeeee?

SPOILER!!: Creatures Calming Solution!

Ingredients:
- Powdered Moonstone
- Syrup of Hellebore
- Powdered unicorn horn
- 1 Shrivelfig fruit
- 3 sprigs of Peppermint
- 3 porcupine quills
- 4 fairy wings
- 3 Doxy Eggs

Steps:
1. Add two pinches of Powdered Moonstone to a cauldronful of water.
2. Heat for five minutes on medium before turning heat off.
3. Add nine six drops of Syrup of Hellebore and two pinches of powdered unicorn horn then stir clockwise five times with wooden stirrer.
4. Add porcupine quills
5. Stir five times clockwise while heating on low.
6. Crush Shrivelfig fruit and add seven drops of juice.
Potion should be lime green now. Add sprigs of peppermint .
7. Stir five times counter clockwise.
8. Add fairy wings and doxy eggs.
9. Sir five times clockwise then five times counter clockwise.
10. Reduce heat to lowest and stew for 20 minutes before turning off heat. Potion should now be light orange.

And... "Now, stir five times clockwise..." Brown eyes were on her cauldron, and he closely watched how it reacted. He dearly hoped it would react the way it should.

"I think you have!" he said and patted the boy on the shoulder once. "Congratulations! I'll send the recipe to the necessary places for it to figure in official books." How did THAT sound? He was what, only 14, but he'd have his name written on the books!

Cosgrach smiled and nodded at him. "That's great." Hehe. He was about to walk away, but something caught his eye in his letter and he focused on the parchment for a while, until he finally decided to say: "Maybe it's better if you don't add the doxy eggs." Yeah... it didn't seem to have much effect.

Lux was happy that the adjustments had been successful, though the next step gave her pause. Was she supposed to add the remaining Chocolate Frogs and then stir? Or was she supposed to stir the Chocolate Frogs and Kneazle tongue so that they were properly fused together? Confused, she was about to raise her hand in order to summon Professor Culloden but it looked like he had beaten her to the punch.

Five clockwise stirs. Right.

After cleaning her wooden spoon she used it to stir the potion 1... 2... 3... 4... 5... times clockwise. The spoon was cleaned once again and Lux decided that now was a good time to continue with the corrections before moving on.

Austin stood there, dumbfounded. He actually did it. Austin Alexander Moore, a 14-year-old Ravenclaw actually made his own potion. Maybe that was some kind of record. His smile grew as the professor told him that he'd get the potion in the books. "Thank you so much professor!" The boy was practically jumping out of his skin at the thought. His name would be in books, in potion guides.

As the professor turned to help another student, Austin felt it was time to pack everything up. He bottled up the rest of the potion, made sure his notes were up to date, and cleaned up his work station. He couldn't wait to try out what he had made. No more nightmares for him! And now, there wouldn't be nightmares for anyone who could re-create his potion.

Once everything was packed up, he turned and waved to the professor. "Thanks again professor!" This is an exciting day indeed. He thought as he left.

Let's go, lime green! LET'S GO!

Adi eyed his potion hopefully as he absently flicked his glasses up and down. Oh look! Colour change! Slowly but surely the potion was going through the shades of green until finally coming to a halt at the right green.

WOOT!

And what was that Culloden was saying? Such was the Hufflepuff's focus on the potion that he had failed to noticed the man looking intently at his parchment. Huh? No doxy eggs? "Why, Professor?" Now, Adi trusted Culloden's call but he was just curious. Plus he had another question. "Do I replace it with any other ingredient?" He would make a quick change if necessary... but that would involve more research. Ugh! On second thought, he would rather they not replace the ingredient.

Moving on! The three sprigs of peppermint were tossed into the cauldron after which the stirrer was cleaned yet again. Now for the counter clockwise stirring! One, two, three, four, five times. Then in went the fairy wings but no doxy eggs. The fifth year turned his attention back to Culloden, waiting for his suggestion.
