It's the same laboratory, except for the rostrum. Professor Culloden removes it for the Workshop Meetings.
For those who couldn't make it to the first meeting, there are two big piles of two different books sitting neatly in the corner. You are welcome to take one from each and keep it.
OOC: I'll keep the thread open. If you guys want to, you can RP taking the books/studying for the workshop etc. In short, this thread is for the workshop. For any other brewing exercise, please use the regular Laboratory thread. Thank you!
Text Cut: First Meeting
There is a big pile of two different books on the teacher's desk, and Professor Culloden can't be seen behind them, as he is sitting on the chair. He's had a nice day, and therefore is very cheerful. He is also holding a note that probably has who's creating what. He greets everyone as they enter. He's eager to start and hopes everyone else is, too!

Eeep! Lux was so excited for the workshop so of COURSE she was eager for the meeting. Culloden already knew about her wish to create potions and this would b a huge help as well as the private lessons they would be having later.
"Hello, Professor!" she called out. Wow, there were a lot of books on his desk. Selecting a seat, she got comfortable. Her first potion and it would be something fun and - hopefully - simple.
Slowly, after Lux had entered came the Machiavellian terd otherwise known as Cutty Mordaunt. "Lux." He said in greeting from behind the Hufflepuff, his voice deposited far behind him as he picked up speed toward a beneficial workspace.
After taking one glance at the Professor's desk, he turned back to Lux and was about to ask who she was talking to, but the greeting set it straight. "Hello, Professor Culloden."

Gabriel had been anxiously waiting for this.
Though it was only a preliminary, first meeting, he'd packed up his school bag (with all his note-taking supplies) and had set off for the dungeons; a rather lengthy walk for those housed on the Seventh Floor. Long but worth it, essentially.
Quietly entering the lab, he took stock of those already present (no Dima Toussaint yet) and grabbed a seat close to Professor Culloden. This would go much better if he had a point of strength...and Gabe got along with this professor. So, everything would be okay. No anxiety fits or panic attacks today.
"Professor."

Yay Potions. It hadn’t taken very much to convince Brooklyn to have signed up for the workshop. She’d practically started planning almost as soon as the first note had appeared on the notice board, and she’d made sure not to forget about the meeting once that notice had gone up. Of course, it didn’t hurt that she was already practically there, if she’d come from the common room. Potions was her favorite. Everything they could do only meant they were that much more useful, and more sneaky than hexing someone. The little queen preferred not being obvious after all. It was much more interesting to be subtle.
The tiny redhead had in fact gone up to the Great Hall before the meeting, to grab a snack. She didn’t have much in her dorm, anyway, and she still knew she wasn’t going to be late. She couldn’t be late. They just wouldn’t start until she got there. Except, maybe they couldn’t have started, as she walked into the potions laboratory to find a giant stack of books or two, a few other students and no professor. That didn’t seem right, but then she heard a voice from behind the books. “Hello Professor Culloden,” she said finally, moving further into the room and picking where she wanted to sit. He had to be back there somewhere.

Of course Adi had signed up for this. He happily made his way to the lab, all set for the workshop meeting. It seemed he wasn't the only one who got there early. He wasn't surprised to see Lux was included in that group.
"Hello, Professor,'' Adi said cheerfully as he neared the table then moved off to join the others. "Hey, Lux, Cutty.'' He took a seat next to the Slytherin. "What's up, Cutty? Got any sweets for your favourite Puff?" Hehe.
Adi waved to Gabe and gave him a big grin. Did the brainy guy know how cool he found him? Anyway, hello to you to, Brooklyn, the girl who had given a hug in her cheerful addled mind during the Potions Final last year.

Okay so he hadn't been totally sure after submitting the potion idea about actually going through with it. Potions classes was enough to deal with and use to explore the subject of potions making...right? But then Benny reminded himself that he was trying his best to be more comfortable with the topic and Culloden's pep talks only helped so much. So he figured doing something outside of lessons might work since there wasn't the chance of so much expectation in the matter.
Heading down to the instructed lab, Ben stepped inside to find not only Professor Culloden barely noticable behind several tomes but a few other students already there, including Adi which wasn't a surprise. "Hello Professor," he greeted with a polite nod, echoing it to acknowledge Lux and Gabe silently before heading towards the Hufflepuff.
"Hey Hippogriff," he greeted with a weak smile. His friend's presence would surely help as well.
Dante was interested in seeing if he could actually make some potion. If if it was as weird as the one he wanted to. Though a Potion to be better at Potions would be perfect. Too bad he had not thought of that before this thing. Plus he promised not to blow any cauldrons up this term.
It was not cool or as awesome as he though. It was still pretty awesome though.
"Hey Professor C"
Looked like he was buried in books.

Workshop time was the best time and Sophie was as chipper as could be as she made her way into the potions laboratory. She peeked around the books to give Culloden a salute and a smile in greeting, and she instinctively moved toward the frontmost desk in the classroom, but Gabe was already there nearest to Culloden's desk, and she didn't want to put up with his face and annoyingly awkward mannerisms so she looked for somewhere else to sit -
Cutty Mordaunt. Perfect.
With an amused smirk, she chose to sit right beside the Slytherin. Right there. And he got a very sweet - and perhaps genuine? - smile out of Sophie Brown. "Hi, best friend. I figure if I sit right next to you today, I won't feel your gaze on my back the whole class period. Makes things easier for both of us, doesn't it?"
Her tone wasn't threatening or even unfriendly at all - quite the contrary, she was certain that she was helping out both of them by sitting with him today.

IT WAS POTIONS MAKING TIME BUT MAKING POTIONS THAT WAS HIS POTION AND KYROH WAS SO EXCITED.
But he didn't show it.
Not really.
Not that much.
The bouncing as he entered the classroom probably gave it away only a little bit though. The third year was beaming ear to ear as he quickly found a seat up at the FRONT, close to a red headed Slytherin girl he had never spoken to before. Kyroh gave her a wave before turning to the Professor. "HULLO PROFESSOR CULLODEN SIR!" -Er- not showing his excitement at all...nope.... he was just ready to learn and create stuff now!

Cosgrach had wisely not closed the side of the desk, so he could see that it was Lux, as well as recognise her voice.
"Hey there!" he greeted her happily, but was too lazy to get up to see where she sat. He hoped a lot would show up today.

Yes, it was. Cosgrach didn't get up, but called out "Welcome, Cutty." His idea was particularly interesting.

And that was Gabe, sitting close. Of course, of course. Cosgrach was sure the boy would be present.
"Hello, Gabe," the man greeted the boy blindly, he wasn't ready to get up just yet.

And this was... Brooklyn, yes, the little sweet Slytheri child.
"Hi there," he called a little loudly, because she sounded far away. He probably had to get up. He checked his watch, and decided to wait for five more minutes. Then, they would begin.

Ah, his ears spotted one cheerful Adi and Cosgrach was pleased to hear that. He didn't want any sulkers today, thank you very much.
"Hey, Adi!" he greeted the boy. How many had shown up so far? He wasn't sure... should have counted. Oops.

Cosgrach didn't see the nod, of course, but he was glad to hear Benny. It must be a huge effort for the boy. He appreciated that.
"Benny!" he greeted and would have waved too, but he didn't want to risk knocking the books off.

1. Sophie Brown didn't greet him.
2. She was sitting next to Cutty Mordaunt.

What a fortunate moment for getting up, because he was one VERY excited Kyroh Scabior to enter the room... bouncing.
"Kyroh Scabior lil buddy!" he greeted the boy with a matching grin from ear to ear. "Excited, are ya?" Because it wasn't showing at all! HEHEHE.
He checked his watch, nodded to himself and closed the door, though he wouldn't mind it if someone was late. In fact, he hoped they would come, would spare him the effort of going over the same things to everyone seperately again.
"Welcome to our first session and thank you for coming," he started, "today, we will talk about ingredients a little and I'll give you these two books to research for the right ones until our next meeting. We won't take long, I promise," he said and smiled, then moved towards the centre of the room.
"Before I dismiss you, I have one or two questions: How do you think a potion is created? We're only discussing, so feel free to guess or make it up if you don't know."

She’d seen that look from the Hufflepuff prefect. Brooklyn had eyed him a little, as if daring him to try and come over to her. She remembered the potions final last term, but it definitely wasn’t happening again. He shouldn’t expect any more hugs, unless he deserved it. So far, nobody here had deserved a hug when she hadn’t been under the influence of magic. She’d sent a sweet smile toward Professor Culloden as he’d finally emerged from behind the mountain of books, though. Respect. Give it to her and she gave it back.
Except she wasn’t sure about the research part. She eyed the books again for a moment s the meeting had started, but decided that if it was important to accomplishing the potion she wanted to make, she’d at least look at whatever she was given. She wondered if the professor was giving them all specific books for whatever they’d said they wanted to make or if they were all the same. The titles were hard to read from her seat, but she’d raised her hand as the question had been posed. “Because someone feels like they want a potion that does something, and there isn’t already one that exists?,” she asked. He meant why new potions were created, right? “Certain mixtures of ingredients cause specific reactions, and that makes a potion.”

"Hiya, Benny,'' Adi greeted as his friend joined the little group. He was pleased the Lion had signed up for this. It just might help him be more comfortable with the subject and the other things that came with it.
Looks like Culloden was getting things started. Goody! Though two books... ahhh. More reading. Though it shouldn't be bad since Potions was one of his favourite subjects.
The fifth year raised a hand after some thought. "Potions are created by mixing various ingredients with certain properties geared toward the kind of potion they want. For example, a Cure for Boils potion would have ingredients that would actually help cure boils.''

Zeke had done what he was under the impression he did best, stealthy enter class and sit quietly as if he were invisible and not even present... but of course he was, VERY present. This whole potions workshop thing was going to be EPIC... EPIC... so he was here, listening, contributing and taking notes in his head. Yep.
Being this was a quick meeting, he had a couple of thoughts on Professor Culloden's first questions. Hand up, he offered his own take on the how.
"Because you want the potion to do SOMETHING particular, you need to find ingredients that help have that effect, their properties and whatnot, so if you're wanting to make a healing balm or something for your sunburn, having something that soothes like aloe vera is a vital ingredient for what you want to achieve." Yeah. YEAH! "So potions need to be designed carefully based on what you want it to do or how you want it to act. But it's not just the ingredients, it's also how you put them together. You wouldn't want something crusty and crumbly if you want a balm for your lips, and you wouldn't want something rocky and too chunky to swallow if you need to drink it, so the form your ingredient takes is important too." Like, using rose petals instead of the thorns... or something.

As more people entered the lab, Lux smiled and waved at them. It was no surprise to see some of the faces, such as Adi and Sophie. Gosh, this workshop was gonna be so much fun and she BEAMED at Professor Culloden when he appeared from behind the books.
Hopefully they would prove to be useful reading, but she couldn't see how they wouldn't. Raising her hand, she offered an answer to his question. "People create potions in order to do something in particular, like cure a cold for instance. Ingredients are selected for it based on their properties as they are geared towards getting the desired effect. So for a cold potion, you'd use ingredients that are known to treat colds." That was the best way she could think of to explain it.
It was Dante's pleasure to come to this meeting seminar talking thing. Like he did not have to. But it was practice at potions. Which will help him not lose concentrations and you know. Accidentally drop a cauldron up. Sometimes listening to instructions gets boring.
Well he expected homework and homework he got. Though he did need to find the perfect ingredients for his starfishing but it is not starfishing potion. That will be the official name. Genius, Right.
"By putting ingredients in water and boiling it, cooling it, or both. And spinning a spoon clockwise or counter clockwise in the cauldron"
You could get more in depth of course. But that sounded like a potion to Dante.

Little buddy? Was that a good thing or a bad thing?
He wasn't little....but Culloden called him his BUDDY.
Either way Kyroh continued to grin. He was too excited to be upset by put down. "No more than usual sir." It was TRUE.
"Magic." Just to be specific. "Potions is really just the combination of otherwise normal ingredients right?" Minus stuff like chimera blood or something horrible like dragon heart. "So it's that with the element of magic." BUT don't ask him how magic worked cause Kyroh didn't exactly know that.

...Oh. Culloden was looking at her funny. HEHEHEHE. Wasn't he super proud of her? For daring to be bold and sit next to her previously sworn ARCH ENEMY?
Hilarious, she knew it was.
Boooooooks. Sophie eyed them a bit greedily, wanting them to look and read through RIGHT NOW instead of having to wait for discussion time to be over. So, a bit impatiently - though she tried not to let it show in her tone - she raised a hand at the professor's question and offered her opinion.
"Well, to create a potion, you've gotta start with the ingredients in their most basic forms. Every ingredient used in potions is unique. Each one has specific properties and specific uses and things that are important to know about 'em, and each ingredient has positive effects and negative ones if mixed with ingredients whose properties conflict. Ingredients are your building blocks, and y'have to know everything about each specific ingredient and how it's used and what could go wrong with it when combined with another ingredient. Y'can't just throw ingredients together and hope for the best, even if the ingredients' uses are similar and you'd THINK they'd both be positive additions to the makeup of your potion - it's a super intricate process of considering how ingredients will react and studying them extensively before moving onto the practical part of potion-making." Okay? Okay.
What Zeke had to say was smart, too, about the consistency of ingredients. Though, of course, there were ways around that kind of stuff, like the crushing of coarse ingredients or chopping them up or finding the right chemical balance in the potion for those ingredients to dissolve in some way. She didn't verbalize that, though, because she'd said enough for now and her gaze was back on the books. Would he care if she just... went up there and took one? Right now?
Cosgrach was pleased with the answers they gave and he was beaming. They got this, he knew. They would create the perfect potions.
"Ingredients obviously need to do the effect you want your potion to do," he began, "but as some of you mentioned, how you prepare and mix these ingredients are very important too. Though, for today, our focus is on the ingredients. We'll talk about how to prepare them later." He took out his wand. "Last but not least, magic." He smiled at Kyroh, because he was the one who mentioned it. "Last term, we learnt that muggles cannot brew our potions even if they have all the ingredients. Precisely. So, to sum up, you need intent, right ingredients, the right way to mix them and magic to successfully create a potion."
He waved his wand and the ingredients of Polyjuice Potion appeared on the blackboard.
"Let's analyse Polyjuice Potion to understand it better." And so, he read aloud what he had written on the board.

Adi understood perfectly well what Culloden was talking about. And the analysis of the Polyjuice Potion was still helpful. His knowledge on Potion ingredients had been enhanced a bit and he was looking forward to figuring out the ingredients to his own potion.
Well, this meeting was short. Cool! Maybe he would get started on getting his list of ingredients right away. Adi got to his feet then headed over to take the books. Wasn't the Potions Professor so awesome for giving them books?
"Thanks a ton, Professor,'' the fifth year said with a smile. For both the explanations about ingredients and the books, you know. Now, where was Benny?
Toothless - Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror - DoctorDonna
Benny had been too busy paying apt attention to all that was being said by both Professor Culloden and the seemingly more knowledgable fellow students then to answer himself. Adi, Zeke and Lux certainly had a grasp of everything that was being talked about. More than him at least. Every once and a while he jotted down something on a spare bit of parchment just in case.
Nope...no questions came immediately to mind.
Now they were being dismissed with the assignment of reading and getting ingrediants together. This was going to interesting. More stuff to look into on top of the transfiguration stuff he had found and zeroed in on. But then he should have expected that type of work to look into. Benny followed Adi up to retrieve his copies of the two tomes.
Professor C dropped knowledge and Dante with that. Dante really understood what a potion was now and it was actually a little bit cool. Just a little. Well know he had to do some homework and see what ingredients would be perfect for his potion.
Sigh, he actually wanted had to do homework.
Well he got free books out of this.
Professor C was pretty awesome.

Zeke copied down the notes from the bored, more just because he was in a habit of doing so, but also because it would be handy to have an example like this to take away with him. Listening to Professor Culloden, Zeke bobbed his head as he took in aaaaalllll the information and accepted the books that were given to him. Neat. He could keep these? SCORE!
Grinning to the point where his face might literally split in two, Zeke placed his things and his NEW books into his bag. Homework wasn't ideal, but he wouldn't mind THIS homework so much.

Of course Lux already knew that the way that ingredients were added and mixed also had importance, but she still recorded that tidbit of information into her notes along with everything else.
The breakdown of Polyjuice Potion ingredients was interesting as well as informative and Lux appreciated it since it could prove to be a useful reference while selecting the ingredients for her potion. Happily she took a copy of each book. "Thanks, Professor Culloden!" He was so sweet buying their books for them with his own money. And some students thought he was mean. Pfft.
Putting everything away in her bag, she was excited to get started.
Of course Adi had signed up for this. He happily made his way to the lab, all set for the workshop meeting. It seemed he wasn't the only one who got there early. He wasn't surprised to see Lux was included in that group.

"Maybe. Got a blind eye?" Or a free pass. He'd take either from student leadership. He'd been meaning to ask Newell if he wouldn't mind if Cutty took a dip in the prefects bathtub now and again, but Newell required much massaging and stroking of the ego. It was almost entirely tooo much work.

Sandwiched comfortably between Rehman and Brown, the latter of which was so close he could smell her breath and young witch beauty products, Cutty smiled broadly. In his mind, though was flipping through the possibiities of what her proximity to him could mean. His gaze and indeed his entire face turned toward Sophie Brown so that he was smiling AT her. H'mm. Kinda pretty. Kinda. Booht overall, not his type. She cared too much. Or did she? She seemed pretty keen on flirtin' and right in front of Toby!
"That it will, m'best mate. And I won't teven have to miss anything from starin' at yer hair the whole time either. So considerate is my best friend. So considerate." But she really was and that wasn't something that easily made sense to Cutty. Thinking of others like that. It was weird and contradicted with his preconceived notions of Sophie Brown. What was she? Who was she? Really?
"How luck am I. Dead center of m'two most favourite extra-housemates." He said squeezing both Adi and Sophie in for a hug.
Cutty smiled and waved when the Professor greeted him and spent the rest of the class listening to Culloden ask them the meaningful questions about potions. Getting started rather deep there, Cossy.

Such a great professor that Cosgrach Culloden! Giving them free books and all like that. Probably paid for with his own money or bamboozled freely. It was hard to tell with him sometimes. He seemed to always want to project the image of strict disciplinary on the one hand, but from what Cutty gathered there was an avatar of Cosgrach Culloden that might be best described as 'little terd'.
Cutty wanted to nurture that avatar.
"Thanks, Professor Culloden." For the book and the lesson.
