The Astronomy classroom is exceptionally ordinary this crisp autumn day, which may set you on edge as nothing is ever as it seems when it comes to Professor Flamsteed. And you are probably correct. The desks are arranged in their usual semi circle to help created a more personal and inviting environment and upon each desk is a familiar looking orange item. The early afternoon sunlight shines through the windows to give the room and the pleasant breeze through the open windows may, on occasion, blow an autumn leaf into the classroom.

In the front of the classroom is the professor's desk sitting before a massive chalk board that reads, "Please do not eat, cut, or otherwise manhandle the pumpkins." Professor Flamsteed is currently leaning against his desk reading over something important looking in a manila folder with furrowed brows and pursed lips.

Did you remember to use the lint roller on the small table outside of the classroom? It was there next to the sign that reads, "Not to be used as a brush for your hair" and has the signature of a former student in the bottom right corner.

So come on in and have a seat. Class will begin shortly.

ALSO, and this is my fault for not saying this sooner, please keep in mind that this is NOT your character's first IC lesson - it is October when this takes place, so a month of lessons already under students' belts

Yelled Cahira angry when she saw what the boy did with her rat. Grabbing her rat back she pushed Nabber against her chest, looking worried... "Quick, hide before somebody will hurt you" whispered Cahira while she pushed her rat again in her pocket, staring back at the professor who was CLEARLY exaggerating this whole thing! And to give her detention because of this... It was JUST unfair!

Staring back at the boy she shook her head. "You're crazy to touch my rat like that? Do you want to die? He can bite you really badly" hissed she, irritated about EVERYTHING around her because of her point loss and detention! “It’s not the end of the world that he had bitten the professor but I don’t want him to attack other student’s without my permission” added she in a low voice to the boy, afraid that the professor would hear her.

*Sucking on his finger where the rat bit him Noah looked at the girl with a little shock. Wasn't she the girl he'd met in the robes shop? Was she really mad at him?! If anything she should have been thanking him for saving the demon bitter of fluff. The thing could have been trampled on or something. Especially with the way their professor reacted it was lucky that the rat didn't get smashed. Turning a way from the girl he mumbled,*
"I think the word your looking for is thank you..."

*Lifting up the top of his pumpkin he let the girl reach in and take her rat. Did she just say that she had the rat attack people? What was wrong with her?!*
"I'm pretty sure that rat couldn't kill me. No matter how sharp it's teeth are. Next time I'll be sure the let the thing run around class causing trouble."

*Turning back to the professor he went to see that he was okay, and he also went just to get away from the rat girl.*
"Are you alright sir?"

Taking a deep breath, and ignoring everything around him -- what even was going on?! -- he stuck his hand into the pumpkin and squirmed when his hand touched the nasty gunk stuff. Why couldn't they just use spoons to do this? His hand wasn't meant to touch squishy, seedy pumpkin intestines!

Oliver scooped and scooped out the seeds with the most disgusted look on his face, wishing it would just be over already. And before he knew it, it was over and now he just had a very gross hand.

He nodded a thank you at the house elf that came by to help clean up his stuff and just stared at this hand. He should've used his left hand, at least then he wouldn't feel bad for having to get his hand dirty. Mumbling to himself, he picked up his wand with his thumb and forefinger and touched as little of it as possible, hoping that'd be enough to still carve the dang pumpkin. He liked Astronomy, but he did not like pumpkin carving, apparently. ~~Sleeping would have been more fun than this.~~

After finding information about the Taurus constellation, Evie skimmed through the articles in her textbook to see what she could find. She found several different myths of what the constellation representing, but the most common one was of Zeus. Evie picked up her quill and began to write her thoughts onto a piece of parchment.

Ready to carve her pumpkin, Janelle left her book open to the picture of Orion. She would need something to guide her if she wanted her carving to be good. Holding her wand, she looked for the best spot to begin. Once she found it, Janelle placed the tip of her wand on the side of the pumpkin.

Tracing the pattern with her eyes first, Janelle said "Punktumus". Then taking a quick glance at the picture, she began to move her wand. Slowly and carefully the wand cut into the pumpkin's flesh. Janelle cut an hourglass-like shape and tried to create the main stars in their designated places. She paid special attention to Orion's belt. Janelle cut out three small circular chunks to represent the most important stars ~~in her opinion anyway~~.

Once she was finished, Janelle stepped back to admire her work. Not too bad......well it was the best she could do, anyway. Now she just needed to write down her information about Orion.

Oliver looked at the board and tried to figure out what in the world he was going to carve ~~with his dirty pumpkiny hand.~~ And it wasn't like he knew a whole lot about any of the constellations either. Using his left hand, and struggling, he opened up his book and flipped pages back and forth to try and figure out what exactly to carve. He could try the river one but it was so big and his pumpkin was so smaaall....or maybe he could do Scorpio -- he was a scorpio after (Halloween birthday), so if it was on the board, he'd make it work. He searched the board for it but didn't find that at all...

Eventually, he just decided he would do the triangle looking one, whatever that was, and then he'd figure out what it had to do with anything after it was carved. Pressing his wand near the upper middle area of the pumpkin, he said the incantation, and began carving a nice looking triangle.

Choose a constellation to carve onto the pumpkin?

Man, that was gonna be hard. Mainly because he had to write about the constellation he chose and what magic it could have or whatever. It was a bit like Ancient Runes and Divination, with some major differences in there. Still. He was reminded heavily of the explanations he had had to write for both of those subjects and, even moreso, he was reminded of just how many of his explanations he had had to make up because he wasn't sure and knew nothing.

Making things up sounded very appealing to him, to be honest.

But for that, he kinda needed to decide on a constellation to carve onto his pumpkin. Grayson eyes the list on the board, tilting his head ever so slightly. Picking one would be SO much easier if he actually knew what kinda constellation he was picking and the mythology linked to it. So, he was going for an elimination process. Eliminate all the ones he knew nothing about and the ones that sounded rubbish and THEN settle for one he would be alright with writing a paragraph about.

Like Orion. He was gonna go for Orion.

Well. Dima had SORT of listened to Flamsteed's instructions but not ENTIRELY< having been more preoccupied with stroking his pumpkin. It was so SMOOTH. And he had scooped out the pumpkin innards so well that the INSIDE was all silken too, and.... he was just really proud of himself, okay?

It wasn't every day that he accomplished this much.

Anyway, he had to watch the other students to figure out what they were doing. Only THEN did Dima turn to the board and scrutinize the list of constellations, finally deciding on Canis Major. 'Cause dogs were cool.

And stuff.

Why wasn't there a constellation about TOADS?

To carve the Orion constellation, he needed his textbook so, pulling that closer towards him, Grayson flipped the pages until he landed on the right one. There. Luckily, there was some information about the constellation as well as a bit about the mythology behind it. Not much but enough for him to drag it on and make up a smart blurb for the thing. Perfect.

Picking up his quill, the Slytherin tried to scratch the constellation lightly onto the pumpkin as a rough guide. Honestly, he didn't care too much if he messed up or whatever but he kinda needed the guide. This wasn't a circle he was trying to cut out. There were a number of stars and lines involved in this thing.

When he was done with that, Grayson swapped his quill for his wand. "Punktumus!" Having cast the spell successfully before, casting it again was MUCH easier. Thank Merlin for that because the last thing he wanted was to be standing here with an empty pumpkin and no carving on it by the time it was time to leave. Kinda wanted to get a snack, you know, and not have to stay back just to finish things off.

So, he set about carving, moving his wand this way and that in very straight lines. Some went over the lines but that didn't matter since they got cut out anyways. Didn't matter. He just wanted to be done with this already.

Carving.......... carving..............

So... just carving now, then? Dima opened his textbook to use as a reference for the image, then readied his wand again. He positioned it on the center of the pumpkin, murmuring, "Punktumus," and watching as his wand suddenly began to slice through the outside of the pumpkin's hard outer shell(?). Hehe. COOL.

First was the triangular head of the dog. Then came it's neck, connecting the cranium to its hexagonal body. Next, Dima carefully carved the straight line of the tail. He was an artist; this should have been easy for him, but apparently his skill with brushes and pencils and quills didn't carry over to gourds. His lines were surprisingly shaky, choppy, and uneven. It was almost so bad to the point where the constellation was indistinguishable now.

Oh, well. Couldn't exactly start over now, could he? Did this mean the powers wouldn't work?

Eh. He didn't even know what Canis Major DID.

Well actually it wasn't hard at ALL to choose a constellation, since obviously she'd choose the one that was most relevant to her, which was obviously Leo. This was her zodiac sign after all and even if this was astronomy and not divination, that was still super relevant. And wasn't the whole point of this about imbuing traits or magic or whatever into someone? Obvy traits were already associated to the Zodiac soooo that made it easier.

Also she knew what it looked like so that was a total bonus too, didn't need to look at a book or anything. She'd been considering it as a tattooo AND she had worn it on her nails before.

Ruby got to work marking out the nine main stars, though she would maybe add in the others afterwards maybe possibly, but since those ones gave it its shape, they were obvy the place to start.

Why yes actually she was doing work. Shock horror.

Alright, time to get going on the actual pumpkin carving bit. He KNEW that was what they were going to be doing! Leave it to Flamsteed to make astronomy FUN. For real. All this nonsense was so boring otherwise.

He decided to go with...Taurus. Because he had answered that. So why not use it as his inspiration for his lovely pumpkin as well? Clearing his throat and taking aim, he muttered "Punktumus!" and watched as, yet again, the wand created a knife point and began his pumpkin carving process.

Staring at his unattractive pumpkin was actually becoming painful to his eyes, so Dima directed his attention to the textbook instead.

Paragraph now? Yes? He took up his quill and got started on that.

With the main body of the constellation complete, Ben tried to visualize where the outward lines would come from. It took some manuevering of the pumpkin side to side to see it, finally keeping it where he wanted it to be. Where it would more accurately represent the collection of stars he was going for. Picking the locations of Markab and Scheat, the Gryffindor picked up his wand once more to finish carving.

"Punktumus." One semi-bent line coming out of Markab and to the left.

"Punktumus." Two more lines, one crooked and one straight coming out from Scheat in the southwest direction.

There...carving was complete and he was one to the writing. What special powers would the constellation carving give? Benny couldn't even begin to know. The only thing he thought of with a Pegasus was some connection to flying. So he sat down with some free parchment and began thinking long and hard on things, finally writing down a small paragraph as he went along.

............ He was DONE. About TIME! It wasn't the best and he was no artist but this was gonna have to do for now. And trying to carve something onto a pumpkin was HARD work. He was sure he had built up a sweat along the way but, of course, he was gonna play it cool, if he had. No stinky armpits for him. Nuh uh.

Shrugging, Grayson picked up a quill, pulled a piece of parchment and his textbook closer towards him and started scribbling something or another down onto the piece of parchment.

LOL, what had he written? He didn't know. But it was done now so, he placed his quill down as an act of finality. Thank Merlin for the textbook. Really. He wasn't sure how much he could have written without it and he also wasn't sure if he was ALLOWED to have a peek into the thing for this blurb.

So when could they have some pumpkin juice? He was kinda thirsty.

After Kace read his blurb, it was time for carving his pumpkin. Hmm how was he gonna carve a bull. He snapped his fingers and began to draw a bull. Once he done his sketch he put it over his pumpkin and carved the outline. He began to chant the spell....

"Punktumus!" and did a little carve upward then downward doing one line.

Then he said "Punktumus!" and did a second line to the left of the carving. Another line through the first and seconds lines. He thought it looked like the constellation like in the picture. He grinned and thought it didn't look soo bad.

Soooo pumpkin carving wasn't in his future. But he did try. Once he had the outline he began to carve deeper into the pumpkin.

Scratch....scratch....scratch.....

There now that looked bettter.

She wanted to carve more than one constellation, more because of their significance rather than anything else. At the end, she ended up selecting one. The pumpkin wasn't all that large to fit many, anyway.

Now...to go on about this. The strategic half of her brain started on that quickly, sketching it out on parchment first. Beverly wasn't a fan of mistakes, so having a plan was always first option.

There. Parchment-pumpkin looked promising, it'd look better on the actual thing, she was sure. Switching the quill for her wand, she he it at the low center of the pumpkin, where Algenib would be positioned and start out the constellation.

"Punktumus!" Just a tiny wedge. And waaa-lah! A hole on her pumpkin.

Y'know what her pumpkin was missing? Her star cluster was missing all the many many stars that were too small to see with the naked eye. Dot poked her finger into a few of the holes she'd carved. There was NO way to make stars that were smaller than the smallest holes she'd carved, but she was missing loads of stars. Dozens. More than dozens.

OH. Dot scrabbled for her bag and pulled out her glittery ink pot. Just a little... liberal application of the glitter, and her star cluster was looking a LOT more festive. Look at allllll those stars. Shiny. So shiny.

Beverly ended up dotting the pumpkin so she knew where to cut in next. It wouldn't do to have her Pegasus constellation look some kind of deformed version of it. When she was done marking it, carving commenced once more.

"Punktumus!" After much concentration another hole appeared on the wall of the pumpkin. "Punktumus!" Another one. Her constellation now resembled a sideways triangle with its bottom missing.

Wiping her brow, Beverly cast again and again and again, the holes just looking like holes, but to anyone who knew the Pegasus constellation would know what it was.

Going through his textbook was taking so long. Not because the information was hard to find, or anything, but because Toby's focus just kept wandering. He was SUPPOSED to be reading about Ursa Major, but about ten minutes had passed before he realised he'd gone ahead and read through the information about a bunch of other constellations and asterisms. But he'd caught himself now, at least, and had a pretty good idea of what to write about.

Having loaded up the business end of his quill with ink this time, Toby hurriedly scribbled out what was supposed to be a decent size paragraph, but ended up with a little more than he bargained for, but that was okay too.

WOAH-KAY. That was most difficult part done and over with, really, which was awesome because leaving the funnest part 'til last meant you always ended on a good note. Unless he was running out of time. Uh. Hm. Best hurry up and carve dat pumpkin.

Although this little exercise in class now had him convinced that he could effectively convert at least ¼ of Hogwarts' student population to keeping pet rocks. He must speak with Meriberry immediately about the importance of teaching.

"As I told Mr. Tempus, you won't be hurting the pumpkin."

In fact, technically speaking, it was already dead and rotting. A thought that he obviously kept to himself.

"Ah...I see," he muttered, rubbing his temples as his nose continued to pick up on the roasting smell. "Well, in that case. 50 points NOT taken from Ravenclaw...although I ought to take some for laughing at a classmate's expense." Because that was rude and they were all here to learn and make mistakes. "But not today."

Consider it a warning. Or something. Or an apology for shouting in the manner that he had.

Airey blinked a few times at the young man before giving him a salute as the Hufflepuff went about his business.

*Noah growled at the little furry ball of teeth. Maybe he should have let the thing get stepped on. Picking up the top of his pumpkin he stuffed the rat in it and placed the top back on quickly. The holes in his pumpkin were too small for the little rat to get out so he was safe for the time being. Turning back to the professor he looked confused. This was a grown man, what was he getting all freaked out over? Noah was pretty sure that rats no longer carried the black death. Still everyone had a fear he guessed.*

Yelled Cahira angry when she saw what the boy did with her rat. Grabbing her rat back she pushed Nabber against her chest, looking worried... "Quick, hide before somebody will hurt you" whispered Cahira while she pushed her rat again in her pocket, staring back at the professor who was CLEARLY exaggerating this whole thing! And to give her detention because of this... It was JUST unfair!

Staring back at the boy she shook her head. "You're crazy to touch my rat like that? Do you want to die? He can bite you really badly" hissed she, irritated about EVERYTHING around her because of her point loss and detention! “It’s not the end of the world that he had bitten the professor but I don’t want him to attack other student’s without my permission” added she in a low voice to the boy, afraid that the professor would hear her.

Too busy imagining his life down a few digits, he THANKFULLY had not overheard the conversation between the two Slytherins. Which was a VERY good thing for the pair of them, especially Miss Jones whose fate was already destined for the horrors of a Flamsteed detention and whatever punishment her Head of House saw fit on top of that. And perhaps some words from Javy, perhaps.

All the astronomer knew was that the rat was in the pumpkin - to which the young man earned a half hearted but genuine salute - and he was going to die. Okay, so he didn't really know the latter but the throbbing of his paper wrapped finger indicated otherwise.

"OUT!" he said, pointing at the door to the classroom. "And be sure to take that Rodent of Doom with you."

Checking his sundial watch - and actually looking PLEASED at the time - he looked towards the Ravenclaw. "Just right there on my desk, please," he said as he nodded his head in the direction of a vacant space near his pumpkin.

Something he ought to announce to the class now that he thought about it. He had been, ahem, a BIT distracted.

"Once you are done carving and writing, please leave your parchments on my desk and set your pumpkins on the ground in front of it," he said, using his foot to indicate each spot. "You will be putting some of these theories to test this Halloween as the ghosts and myself will be hosting an astronomy inspired Halloween party in the Spirit Room. Details on that, as well as homework, will be posted on your house noticeboards later. Class dismissed!"

So, hurry up and finish so he could rush to the Healer, yeah?

"House elves, thank you for coming today. If you could please take your buckets to the kitchens," he added with a wink. They knew what to do with that.

Cahira's rat out of the picture, Lux felt it was safe to come down again so she hopped off her desk just in time for Toddles to come around. Honestly she didn't really want to touch the pumpkin guts again but since it seemed she had no other choice in the matter she emptied it all into the bag while making a face. Yuck.

After cleaning her hands for the third time that lesson, Lux started packing everything away. This has been a nice lesson rat aside and she hoped that Professor Flamsteed would like her pumpkin. The mention of a Halloween party sounded really fun and she was looking forward to it.

Pumpkin and parchment were placed where instructed and hopefully the Professor wouldn't have a problem with all the heart doodles for her and Bay. Hehehe. "Thanks for the lesson, Professor. I hope your finger feels better soon." Because rats sometimes had rabies. He should be fiiiiine though.

With a wave goodbye, she skipped off to her Common Room.

Norah let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding and loosened her grip on her wand a little. PHEW. She WOULDN'T be hurting Friedrich. "Thanks, Professor. I'll get on with it now..." She gave him a sweet smile, hoping it'd make him see she was worth the trouble, before turning back to face Friedrich. It was all good now, okay. Allll good. Raising her wand, she only grimaced a LITTLE bit before saying "Punktumus!" BOOM. She traced her wand around in a circle around the stem, and stepped back to admire her handiwork. It was more of an egg oval-y thing than a circle, but that wasn't the POINT okay, she got the spell on the first try, and that was crazy cool.

The third year reached one hand into Friedrich to pull all his guts 'n things out. Professor Flamsteed SAID it wouldn't hurt him, but Norah still leaned over and whispered "I'm sorry, Friedrich" as she pulled out the pulpy strings. Goopy goopy goop heheheh. She pushed the insides of the pumpkin, along with the seeds, to the side of the desk so the house elves good pick 'em up before they left. Ickle house elves were so cute. "Thank you thank you elfies!" the thirteen year old called in their direction, and gave one a thumbs up, just 'cause they deserved appreciation too y'know. She narrowed her eyes at her notes to try and pick a constellation to carve. Umm. UMMM. Taurus KINDA sounded like Dinosaur...in a way. SO maybe that'd be exciting!

She looked critically at the pumpkin and aimed her wand at its center. "Punktumus!" Norah traced her wand in the shape of the constellation, narrowing her eyes at Jack-o-Friedrich in concentration to make sure her wand didn't shake too much when she was carving. Didn't want a SQUIGGLY Taurus, now did they? Setting down her wand, Norah GRINNED at her pumpkin and gave it a little pat before sitting back down and pulling out her quill. Time to WRITE now. The SECOND hardest part after cutting up Friedrich, even it was painless if didn't mean it wasn't SAD. Sigh. Writing, right. Norah scratched her nose with her quill, bent over her parchment, and STARED at it, willing the words to appear on the paper without her having to figure 'em out.

BOOM. She was SO GOOD, people. SO GOOD.

Once she was alll finished and packed up, with all necessary materials delivered to the indicated areas, Norah skipped up to the front of the room and gave Professor Flamsteed a salute. "Thanks, professor! 'Specially for helping Friedrich" Her pumpkin was IMPORTANT okay. "Hope your finger feels better 'n all that"

Amur nodded at the Professor's thanks. He didn't look too good, turning pale and all, but he seemed to be able to regain his two feet. Plus, Amur wasn't sure what else she could do to help. Run as fast to the healer's as she could if need be? Plus, there were other older, more experienced students who could help if something went seriously awry. But he seemed, okay?

Turning back to her desk, Amur's ears pricked up at the mention of no food, her eyes slipping to the roasted pumpkin seeds on her desk. Did it count as food if she had created it during class? Her eyes slid sideways as she ripped out another piece of parchment and carefully draped it over the snack. Best not to shake the points jar and see how many would fall out.

Letting out a slow breath, Amur returned her attention to her pumpkin, brow furrowing. Right then. She had to get this done. Focus. She needed focus.

Her eyes skipped down to the page of her textbook. Grus. The crane constellation.

Narrowing her eyes, Amur placed her wand on the face of her pumpkin for the point of her first star. A slow breath was released with the mutter of Punktumus and the wand slid into the flesh of the vegetable. She twisted it back and forth and wiggled it up and down a little, to widen the hole before removing it. One down, eight more to go.

She repeated the process, estimating the distance of the holes from one another. She made the main, anchoring holes a little wider than the others. Three times her wand got stuck, nearly lifting the pumpkin off the table as she struggled to free her tool. When at last each star of the constellation was set in the pumpkin, Amur counted them twice to make sure she hadn't missed anything.

Rodent of Doom? Wow! She never had thought about it, but that name was actually pretty cool! Not... That she would tell it to the professor! He was already angry enough! And besides, she didn't wanted to give him that much credit! She was too irritated with professor Flamsteed at the moment! He was just... Acting NOT rational! It was just a little bite and nothing more! He was just a stupid cry baby! Ha! Yes, that was he, a CRY baby!

Eying the boy she had met in the Diagon Allay she shrugged, she was still too irritated to thank him for his help, at this moment she just... Wanted them all to keep silent and to NOT bother her! Turning her back to him she heard what the professor said next... 'Get out?' Hmmm, had she REALLY permission to leave this stupid classroom? Ha! This was maybe the best part about this whole rat drama! She already didn't liked this lesson and now she was free to go! And about her detention... Hmm... She didn't knew what to think about it, she never had been there so... She didn't knew!

Grabbing her belongings she left all the pumping dirt behind for the house elves, they were there to clean everything so why would she bother and get her hands dirty? Leaving the classroom she looked cold and arrogant, trying to NOT show everybody how smug she was about herself that she had let a teacher cry like a baby!
