Default Astronomy Lesson 1 :: Halloween Astronomy

The Astronomy classroom is exceptionally ordinary this crisp autumn day, which may set you on edge as nothing is ever as it seems when it comes to Professor Flamsteed. And you are probably correct. The desks are arranged in their usual semi circle to help created a more personal and inviting environment and upon each desk is a familiar looking orange item. The early afternoon sunlight shines through the windows to give the room and the pleasant breeze through the open windows may, on occasion, blow an autumn leaf into the classroom.

In the front of the classroom is the professor's desk sitting before a massive chalk board that reads, "Please do not eat, cut, or otherwise manhandle the pumpkins." Professor Flamsteed is currently leaning against his desk reading over something important looking in a manila folder with furrowed brows and pursed lips.

Did you remember to use the lint roller on the small table outside of the classroom? It was there next to the sign that reads, "Not to be used as a brush for your hair" and has the signature of a former student in the bottom right corner.

So come on in and have a seat. Class will begin shortly.

Lesson Progression
question 1 :: what connections are there between Halloween and astronomy?
question 2 :: what can we expect to see in the night sky on Halloween?
mini activity :: preparing your pumpkin using Punktumus
activity :: constellation carving time!
OOC:
Please be sure you are familiar with Professor Flamsteed's rules BEFORE you post in this lesson. We will know if you haven't read them! All SnitchSeeker site rules apply.

Class will officially begin in approximately 14 hours from the time of this post.
RL happened and I unfortunately was not able to finish this post to meet my 14 hour deadline. I'll post as soon as I can after getting a good night's rest. Thank you for your patience <3 please keep chit chatter to a minimum.

This lesson has officially started! Please do not announce your character arriving late and just pretend like they have been in class all along. You are free to jump in any time and should use the lesson progression links to keep up.

ALSO, and this is my fault for not saying this sooner, please keep in mind that this is NOT your character's first IC lesson - it is October when this takes place, so a month of lessons already under students' belts

Default Mini Activity #1, Post #1 (catching up)
~ Rise and Rise Again, Until Lambs become Lions ~

Pumpkins. The very sight of the orange ball of wonderfulness had thoroughly distracted Amur from the first half of the lesson. That was, until Mr. Curiosly-Terrifying-Head-of-House Professor Flamsteed started jumping up and about on desks. Then it was a matter of staring wide-eyed at him, trying to figure out if he had managed to somehow secure a bungie-cord around his waist and up to the roof. But no, no bungie-cord. Just bunny-legs.

Needless to say, she was going to have to read the textbook. But her concern and displeasure for such a task was quickly washed away by the fact that they got to carve pumpkins! It was one of her absolute favorite holiday activities, though she had never tried it with a wand before.

She had never tried carving anything with her wand before. And well, her wand had a bit of a temperamental relationship with her. Carefully unholstering it, Amur peered at the pumpkin, then at her wand, then at the pumpkin and then back again. With her free hand she pointed at the tip of her wand, giving it the stink eye. "You. Carve." She point at the pumpkin. "That. Got. It?"

Hopefully. The wand-shop-man had told her that her feelings needed to be inline with the spell that she was casting, but she wasn't sure how that translated to cutting open a pumpkin. Would excitement at the prospect allow the spell to work, or did she have to feel more aggressive? After all, she was essentially turning her wand into a knife, and that seemed to require some aggression. But it wasn't an aggressive act, it was cutting open a pumpkin. Surely, her wand could understand that.

Letting out a slow breath, Amur wiggled forward in her chair, held her wand in both hands and placed it at the top of the pumpkin. Work wand. Work. It's happy carving, okay? She shifted in her seat, scotched forward a little more and breathed out the spell while pressing down slightly, "Punktumus...."

Nothing. Amur's mouth tilted into a displeased frown. Her wand still looked like, well, a wand. Sighs for life.

Moving forward even more, so that she was pressing up against the edge of her desk, Amur put her wand on the opposite side of the pumpkin from her. A little bit more intention, a little bit more oomph. "Pumktumus!"

The wand went through. She almost squealed for joy.

Lifting her hands briefly off the wand, she rubbed them together, ready to get down to some serious carving business. The hard part was done, now, all she had to do was move it about to cut off the lid. Placing both hands on the wand, she pulled up on the wand to start the c-saw motion, instead yanking wand and pumpkin-attached up off her desk. The pumpkin seemed to have sealed itself back around her wand, clutching onto the better portion of the wooden stick like a bad candy apple.

It was the wand that got the glare though. Once again, it seemed to be mocking her. Apparently, it had decided it didn't want to hold her incantation. And no, she wouldn't take any responsibility for letting the intention of the spell go.

So now that she had her constellation picked out, and she had it DOOOWWWNN. And now..the hard part.

Carving.

Eden was a pro at this. She liked carving pumpkins, but she was not a PRO at it. She picked her wand, and, placing the paper of all of her drawings of the Canis Major. She had a lot of faith in herself to NOT mess this up, and so, with her tongue between her teeth, she squinted at the face of her Pumpkin--DEAN--and decided to start with the quadrilateral? body. "Punktumus!" she whispered, but forcefully, and and her wand began to cut into the pumpkin. This wasn't as hard as the muggle way--with those weird almost SCAPEL things--

But Eden was paying VERY close attention to her pumpkin as she carved...and slid her wand in the right directions--making the body..and then the legs...and the neck--yeah! She pulled her wand back to examined what she had done so far. Not bad, McGee.

NICE.

And she leaned in once more, muttering the spell to herself before starting to carve again...she hoped her constellation turned out...nice.

Lux continued to flip through her textbook until she landed on the page with Gemini. It was an interesting constellation because it looked like two stick figures holding hands. How cute. Heh. And now she could understand why Gemini was called the TWINS.

Glancing back to her pumpkin, Lux was trying to visualize in her mind's eye how exactly she would lay things out because it was important to her to line things up perfectly and make each cut the right length. There was no way that she wanted a crappy looking pumpkin for Halloween. Thinking it over a little, she decided that it might be a good idea to do a drawing first. Maybe she wasn't an artist, but how hard could a pair of stick figures be?

Opening her notebook up to a new page, she grabbed a pencil and got to work. Not too bad. Pretty snazzy if she said so herself. And now she was ready to carve!!

*Alright, pumpkin top off and guts all out. Now on to carving a swan... yeah that sounded manly he thought to himself. Carving in the constellation he thought about how he would much rather be carving a dragon or something else. Was there a dragon constellation? He couldn't remember off the top of his head. Finishing up his swan star thingy he sat back and looked at his handy work.*

"Those are quite fascinating, Miss Banner," he admired, pointing to her finger nails while absently taking a glance at his own finger nails. For a bloke, he had rather nice ones by the way. Never bit them as a nervous habit or anything.

Oh yes, and fine spell work as well...but SHINY!

Scratching his head as he watched the Hufflepuff prefect, he wondered - without REALLY wanting to know, mind you - what had thrown the boy off his game so much.

"Look alive, Mr. Rehman," he chirped, drumming on his desk with the palms of his hands as though he were doing a drum roll to the most epic of revealings EVER. "You'll get the hang of it. Not to worry."
SPOILER!!: Zeke & Hady!

Speaking of looking alive...

"Everything alright over here?" he asked as casually as possible as he approached the pair.

Airey sort of just stared at the young Hufflepuff. "The pumpkin won't carve itself you know," he chuckled. Well, he supposed it COULD if you charmed it appropriately, but that wasn't the purpose of the activity.

"I'll tell you what, Miss Brown," he said as he looked at his sundial watch. "We'll give it a few more minutes and if you finish your pumpkin entirely you can help."

In fact, he should probably go work on his own pumpkin...but his suit...WHAT IF HE GOT PUMPKIN GUTS ON HIS SUIT?! He really should have thought this through a bit more...and was tempted to cheat and just banish the insides without students noticing...

Were any of them looking? Yes? No? Maybe?

He stood by his desk, pumpkin one hand and wand in the other, looking like a 5-year-old with his hand caught in the cookie jar. Oh-so-very inconspicuous and smooth as chunky peanut butter, he was.

She didn't mind getting dirty right now as she could always 'scourgify' everything when she was finished. As she had to reach further into the pumpkin to get what was left on the bottom she sat up on her knees, basically kneeling on her chair. Grabbing the last bit she plopped it into the pill on her desk.

Done with this part she chanced a glance beside her and grinned brightly glad to see Zeke was smiling a bit more now. She was tempted to flick a bit of pumpkin stuff at him to make him laugh but she thought against it for the moment.

And he was curious how she intended to transport the gunk back to her dorms. Stuff it in her pockets? How disgusting.

Now he REALLY was looking at his fingernails. Ridiculously starring really. It was as though some complicated mathematical equation were written right there on his cuticles. "I...may need to take you up on that offer, Miss Banner," he mused. He had never had his nails painted...save for the time Kiera had insisted...

Oh.

THWARTED.

Boyish grin tugging at his lips, he eyed his wand and reluctantly returned it to its holster, rolled up his suit's sleeve, and shoved it into the pumpkin. His noise wrinkled at texture and horrible squishing sound. "Just let loose and get into the, er, spirit of the season," he grinned, a VERY forced one.

Stellar. Better alive than the alternative. He gave the prefect a quick salute before moving along.

"I suppose if you wish to keep a few you may," he nodded, not wanting to reveal his future plans too much. Hard to keep secrets here at Howarts, what with all the big hair and whispering walls and so on. "Just don't go sticking them up your nose or anything."

"Excellent," he nodded, throwing the Gryffindor two thumbs up.

You know in those muggle movies when something dramatic happens and everything slows down and overly dramatic music begins to play? It typically involves the hero jumping to catch something valuable from falling to the floor or the hero catching their partner/love interest before they completely fall to their doom? This was one of those moments...except Airey Flamsteed was no hero, but his suit could arguably have been his love interest. The doom? That came in the form of pumpkin guts being flung about the room.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" he roared as he dove to the floor to avoid the little flecks that had come his way. Just barely missing them, the hit the blackboard with a dull SMACK-ing noise and clung to it.

"WHO?!" he barked for the floor - and partly into the floor for fear of more gunk coming his direction.

Still on the floor, and where he would be for a little while just so everyone knew, he peeked up when he heard the seventh year's question.

"An excellent question," he nodded, wiggling his index finger in her direction. "Astronomy is more than just scientific inquiry and discover, it also heavily influences cultures. Thus, today we are looking more the cultural implications that the universe as so graciously bestowed upon humanity, muggle and wizarding a like."

Which brought him to his next point. Looking up and ensuring that there was no more pumpkin coming his direction, he sat up - still on the floor - and sat there crisscross applesauce as he spoke.

"Carving pumpkins has been a sort of Halloween tradition for what seems like forever," he began. "Some historians say that the tradition of carving into vegetables goes back as far as 10,000 years ago, although the custom we know today is said to have originated in Ireland. Now, today we have discussed Samhain and the celebration coming about because of humanity's interpretation of what celestial bodies were doing. Thus, some wizarding historians make claims that the practice of pumpkin carving actually came about because of astronomy." Sort of interesting, no? Just step back and look at the way the stargazing had impacted their lives! JUST LOOK AT IT! LOOK! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK!

Oh wait, he still needed to talk. Right then.

"Most of the time, these carvings were to reflect the spirits and grotesque creatures said to roam the earth on October 31st, and yes...some of this did come about because of witches and wizards could could not keep their wands in their pockets prior to the creation of the Statute of Wizarding Secrecy. Now, modern wizarding archiologists believe that they have found the remains of some of the carved vegetables that contain the carvings not of foul creatures, but of star patterns," he stepped rolled a little closer to the blackboard to point at the list they had created. "These very constellations listed here. Why did some of the ancient peoples do this? It is theorized that, much like the experiment some of you may recall in previous terms with magic and solar eclipses, carving into these pumpkins certain constellations may be a form of sacrifice and on Halloween night the carver would be bestowed with special powers from that constellation, similarly how one carves runes into objects to invoke certain magical attributes." Which he personally found to be ridiculous, much like the solar eclipse studies, but he was doing a colleague a favor by using his October lesson plans for a test study with the theory. Ridiculous being constellation carvings being the same as runic ones."These discoveries are relatively new, so in a sense you lot may be helping make wizarding history. So, using your textbooks to research one of the constellations on the board, I would like you to theorize what sort of special magical attributes they may, or may not, have bestowed upon witches and wizards. Then, using the same spell you used to cut a lid, you are to carve the constellation into your pumpkin. Any questions?"

Oh! And here were the house elves!

"Impeccable timing, you guys," he saluted to the house elves as they popped into the classroom. "You're off the hook, Miss Brown." Unless she really wanted to help them gather up the orange goop that is.

But now back to the students. "You may begin!" And he would review his notes on this whole..."study" while they did that.

And what was that face that Mr. Tempus was making at him? Stare.
OOC: PUMPKIN CARVING PART 2! WOOT WOOT!

First, you CAN still do part 1, so not to worry.

In 3 posts or more, you need to accomplish the following:
  • pick one of the constellations on the board
  • have your character carve it into their pumpkin
  • have your character write a small blurb (5 sentences minimum) on the constellation and what special "magic" it may have been believed to have given a caster (ie, did it enhance water magic? Make transfiguration spells stronger? Give the caster the ability to render shield spells worthless?
  • You may include a graphic or your own creation (either hand drawn or done using an graphics editor) for extra credit

You have approximately 48 hours from the time of this post to finish these steps and the ones listed in my previous instruction post, but I may extend this depending on RP activity

Got a question? Feel free to ask me OOC via VM or PM or IC of Professor Flamsteed.

Happy RPing!

He hadn't even noticed Professor Airey doing the rounds, so when he heard the man's voice... he jumped a little in his seat. "Everything's fine, Professor," he nodded solemnly, adding a swift salute to boot.

Yep. All good ... all fine, never mind that he was going to FAIL the subject this year. At least he was capable of scooping out pumpkin guts.

After he left, he spared a couple of quick glances at Hady, but he didn't say anything. There wasn't anything really to say, but she was there.

He'd just picked out the last stubborn seed that kept slipping around the inside of his Jack.. was it a Jack? ... when Airey called for the lesson to continue.

Zeke had hoped that all he'd have to do was punch a few holes into the side of his hollowed pumpkin, but it seemed the Professor had a great deal more installed for them. GROAN.

Eyes closed, he took his index finger and let it DROP onto his notes, hopefully in the approximate location of where he copied the list. Well, he had to pick somehow, right? And frankly, each was as bad as the next, he was CLUELESS.

Hyades.

He'd picked Hyades. Brilliant.

HOW was he supposed to carve a CLUSTER of stars? Hhhhmmmm? Though, upon opening his textbook to the right page, and tilting his head every which way, he supposed it wouldn't be TOO hard after all. He could carve that.

It looked like nobody was going to clean out her pumpkin for her. Brooklyn had hoped she could have just vanished it, especially after she’d heard Ruby ask. If the professor had been thinking about it, she’d hoped that meant they could. Or at least maybe she could have sneakily done so, but then the house elves were there, and everyone else was off cleaning out their own pumpkins and goop was flying, and she just gave up. Everyone was stupid and not willing to help her, so she’d just have to do it herself. Except she wasn’t going to be happy about it. Setting the lid she’d made aside, she stood up again so she could lean over her pumpkin, sticking a hand in and cringing at the feeling of the goopy guts that oozed between her fingers almost immediately. This was disgusting.

She made sure to waste no time at all in cleaning her pumpkin out, then looked for a house elf to collect the sticky pile of goop sitting next to her pumpkin. She used her wand to Scourgify her hand while she waited, then pulled her parchment over to think about which constellation she wanted to carve. Most of them weren’t interesting enough, but as she got to the ‘L’ section, her eyes landed on Leo. Leo was a lion, and that reminded her of Cersei. She’d carve a constellation version of the Lannister lion, to go with Casterly Rock and everything else. That’d be her plan, and as long as she didn’t cut the bottom line out it looked easy enough.

Zeke practiced first, sketching it out into his notebook and then marking out where to make the cuts in his pumpkin. It seemed like an easy enough task, so he wasn't sure what the catch was. Was there a catch? There HAD to be a catch. Although, the catch could very well simply be the paragraph he'd have to write about the damn star cluster at the end. Boo.

Inhaling a breath, Zeke readied himself to start carving out his star cluster. It wasn't accurate. It wasn't measured and spaced out to scale. It probably wouldn't even be recognisable, but he was going to try.

Pressing the tip of his wand into one of the marked spots on his pumpkin, he let it sink into the orange flesh and then twisted it in a circular fashion to ensure it left a star-like hole. Did he do that right?

Why… Was the professor looking at her like that? Okay… Her rat was evil but the professor didn’t knew that! So… Why was he looking at her as if she just had said something really badly!? Hmm… Making a metal note to be careful around this teacher while she had her rat with her she shook her head and smiled innocent. ”No, of course not! Animals aren’t allowed during you lesson, I have read the rules lied Cahira because… Well… She had her rat with her but that was a accident! But… The professor didn’t knew that, she had hidden her rat so that nobody would find her evil and finger eating rat! ”And besides… My rat is evil, If he was here then he already would have bitten somebody” spoke Cahira calmly and THAT wasn’t a lie! Her rat was evil and he wasn’t able to escape! Ha! Looking down at the dirt from the pumpkin she smiled, a smart girl was ALWAYS prepared! Especially a girl who had a rat what could leave some dirt and other nasty things behind! “I have plastic bag in my schoolbag, I have it always with me for when my rat is leaving… Something behind…” There was no way that she would describe WHAT her rat was leaving behind but if the teacher was smart then he would be able to guess it! “So… Can I take something with be before the house elves are taking everything?” Quickly she eyed the house elves…

Okay okay… No need to panic now! I just need to pick a constellation, that’s all… But… What… Where the constellations again? Quickly looking at her notes she became more and more worried! Oh oh! She didn’t knew it! She had wrote something about Uranus but… Was that a constellation? She didn’t knew it for sure! Looking worried AGAIN she raised her hand and looked at the professor… “Uranus was also a constellation right?”

Hyades... when he thought about it, could almost be 'Hady's' ... which made him turn to see how she was going. Which thing from the list had she chosen??? He'd have asked as much, but he felt he needed to concentrate on his glorified lesser-vegetable in order to redeem his poor start to the lesson. Theory and practical were equally weighted, right? Same in O.W.L.'s too, or so he hoped. It would be his only saving grace if his current aptitude followed through.

Next spot... or star, or whatever was... Zeke checked his diagram again. Aethra followed by Althea. Funny names for stars. Of course, he found names of moons even funnier, and there were so many out there in the GIGANTIC universe that he didn't think it was possible to remember them all. He was already screwed, and his O.W.L.'s were still three years away. He had time to sweat.

With his magically enhanced Larch wand, Zeke continued to carve out the stars which made up the Hyades cluster constellation thing... which was it? he really didn't know.

So far so good. She had her pile of pumpkin guts and seeds set aside and the little elfies from the Kitchen were here cleaning up the mess for them. Really she could've done it herself but she allowed them to clean away her mess with a grateful smile.

Once that was done she grabbed her wand and used it with a muttered, "Scourgify" to clean her hands and whatever may have gotten on her clothes. Setting her wand down she lifted her attention to the Professor just as he had began to speak about the next part of the project. Simple enough really for now.

Which constellation did she want to choose? Grabbing her parchment and quill she skimmed her finger over what she'd written earlier. There! That was!

Pegasus.

That was the one she was going to go with. It somewhat made her think of Hippogriffs since they could fly. Grinning a bit at her choice she glanced over at Zeke beside her to see how he was doing. He seemed okay, he was already getting to work on the carving.

He was making sound progress... and though his star holes were a little shabby looking, he thought it was effective enough. It'd do. Go figure he sucked at theory and he sucked at star-in-pumpkin-carving. He was on a roll today.

"How're you going with it?" he asked Hady, finally setting down his wand and giving up.

The stars were done, it was the best that he could do.. and he wasn't about to ruin another pumpkin retrying - even if that were an option. Zeke quickly sketched down his work in his notes again, the image of his carved pumpkin front and centre.

He checked over his notes again to see what was next.... ew... the paragraph, already? Ugh.

Magically cleaning off his hands, Zeke turned his page and took up his quill. Where to start? What did his textbook say?

Zeke wanted to know how she was doing? How was she doing exactly? So far she'd gotten nowhere. Like all she'd done was decide which constellation she was going to carve into her pumpkin. It wasn't very far at all.

"I haven't gotten very far..." Hady admitted quietly shifting her gaze over to her Gryffindor buddy, tapping her quill lightly on her desk. "So far all I've managed was to pick which one I was going to try."

Sighing quietly and chewing on her lip she began to make a sketch of the constellation Pegasus. It wasn't all that good really but it was enough for her to continue on with the next step.

Carving. Keeping the parchment with her sketch beside the pumpkin she set down the quill and picked up her wand pressing the tip lightly to the pumpkin. "Punktumus!" she muttered softly but with intent and force, the wand tip changing into that of a blade and easily poking a small hole into the pumpkin. Twisting her wand a little she somewhat was able to make a small hole which she hoped resembled a star.

One star down and several more to go.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Flipping open his text book to the pages on Gemini, Adi was first greeted by an image of the constellation. To him, it look like two stick persons holding hands. "This should be easy enough to carve,'' he thought as he proceeded to read a bit about the chosen constellation. Every bit of knowledge could be useful for OWLs, after all.

"Associated with twins Pollux and Castor in Greek mythology,'' the Hufflepuff read to himself. "Gemini has eighty five stars that are visible from earth without the use of a telescope with Pollux being the brightest and Castor being the second brightest." Fascinating stuff there. Adi would have read more but he was made aware of the house elves collecting pumpkin gunk as one passed somewhere close to him thus bringing him back to reality.

Right. So how should he proceed? Hmmm... the best thing to do would be to mark the pumpkin with Gemini's constellation, yes? If he just did it using his wand, he could make a mess of the shape of Gemini. So, using his quill and with as much precision as possible, the still dejected Adi began marking the pumpkin with tiny dots as he ever so often referred to his book for guidance.
....................

"Well, its not that perfect,''
he thought to himself moments later as he examined his work. ''But it sure looks like Gemini.'' Grabbing his wand, he pressed it against one of the dots, muttering the incantation to begin the carving. Of course he had some trouble AGAIN but certainly less than the first time around. Once he got a hang of the spell, things went a whole lot smoother.

Angel now had to decided what to calve into her pumpkin... this was going to be hard, she didn't really like doing carvings because if it went wrong everything was ruined and then she would have to start over again... but she was going to give it her best shot and hope for once luck was on her side, when she was eight she had tried to calve a pumpkin for Halloween and made a total mess of it... so much so her mother had thrown it in the bin after they both realised that it couldn't be saved.

Angel decided that she would calve Gemini because well she had closed her eyes and pointed her finger at one of the names on the list and it was Gemini, how easy was that to pick it saved a lot of time and thought about why you were picking it... now though she had to do the calving which was either going to go good or bad.

Zeke put down his quill, happy to prolong the pain of having to write long and coherent sentences. "Cool," he said to Hady, turning in his seat to face her proper. "Which did you pick?" he asked, again, eager to hear more, and eager to procrastinate.

In fact, if he was still TECHNICALLY carving or whatever, he didn't need to write, so picking up his wand once more, he decided to just neaten up some of his handy work. "Punktumus," he recited, evening up some of the star holes.

Making another star shaped hole in her pumpkin with her wand Hady didn't reply to Zeke right away. Only for the simply reason of not wanting to complete mess up what she was doing. Finishing with the star she looked over at Zeke before moving onto the next.

"I choose Pegasus. Which one are you working on?" She asked looking past him to where his pumpkin was on his desk. It seemed like he was finished already, luck him.

Hady still had a few more star holes to make and then she'd be able to move to the next step. So while she waited on Zeke's reply she poked another hole into the pumpkin with her wand.

Was that guts flying across the room. Bet Professor Airey would be mad if some got on his suit. They usually look so neat and non wrinkled. Just some observations from Dante.

Pick a constellation. Well Dante will pick one he can actually say and looked normal enough......

So, Grus. Yes, let's do Grus. Simple name and hopefully simple constellation on this pumpkin.

If not than Dante will soldier on.

Once Evie had gotten all the pumpkin guts out, she used her wand to clean off her hand with trying not to get too much pumpkin goo on her wand. She managed. After listening to the professor's instruction, Evie pursed her lips and tried to think of which constellation she wanted carved into her pumpkin.

She wanted to do something COOL. She had said the little dipper, but that was always visible, so she tried to think of something else that someone else had said. Maybe... Taurus. That one was cool.

Picking back up her wand, she uttered the word "Punktumus," again so she could use her wand as a knife and then started poking holes into her pumpkin, as close as she could get to the constellation.

Now that Magro had decided what she wanted to carve out now was the time she was ready for it. She was so used to the little muggle carving tools. The little poker to shape out your patterned and the little 'saws' using her wand to do this was going to be a little challenging, but she was pretty sure she could hand this.

She had picked the right side she wanted to do this on and began. Saying the incantation can to make her wand that little knife just like she used for the top she began to form her Pegasus. She hoped she didn't screw up. One time at home Margo had cut off a portion she shouldn't have and had to put it back together with toothpicks. It was her worst looking pumpkin she had ever down.

After about 20 minutes worth of work Margo had completed her pumpkin and she was rather proud of herself. Smiling and placing the top on her finished project. Now what was the last things the Professor had asked them to do??

"Scourgify..."

Benny aimed the spell at his hands to vanish the remnants of pumpkin that proceeded to stick to his hands even as he was tempted to just wipe it on his robe. The house-elves seemed pretty content to take care of any other messes being made on behalf of the pumpkin carving. But he didn't want his hands to be sticky as he proceeded further into the assignment as it could potentially cause problems with his grip on his wand or anything else for that matter.

Glancing back at the list of constellations they had to choose from for their carving. The Gryffindor tried to match them all up with the projection so he could properly decide on which one he was going to do. In the end, Benny opted to stick with Pegasus for his design on the pumpkin. His very own flying horse, even if the constellation wasn't that close to looking like the creature.

The Idea Man Kori-Kins

Angel was totally going to have to see what was involved in the Gemini constellation because well at the minute she had no idea what was involved and at the minute she hoped that she could sort thing out and she hoped that she could see the ideas.

Angel smiled as she looked in the book so that was what the Gemini Constellation looked like, she had a funny feeling that it was going to be hard to make an exact copy of the constellation but she would do her best and hope the Professor liked it.

""Punktumus!" Angel did the wand movement and then she started to calve the pumpkin hoping and praying that it would go right, first she did this and then that and then she did a few things... she really wanted to make the best of this.

She stopped using the wand once she had done what she needed to and then she put a few lines on the pumpkin to add the finishing touches, this was totally amazing and she was totally loving this and things seemed to be going great which was amazing as well.

"Punktumus!'' Adi was finishing up on the two brightest stars of the constellation. He had made them the biggest to represent their brightness. "It looks okay,'' he thought as he surveyed his work.

There was only one thing left to do now: write a bit about the constellation and the magical attributes. Substituting his wand for his quill, the Puffer began to write, using his textbook as a guide yet again.

SPOILER!!: About Gemini

Gemini is one of the eighty eight modern constellations and the name is Latin for Twins. Its two brightest stars, Pollux and Castor are associated with twins of the same name in Greek mythology. Its bordering constellations include Taurus, Orion and Cancer. This constellation is best visible during the month of February. From a magical aspect, it is believed that Gemini enhances the conjuring abilities of witches and wizards but it significantly decreases the abilities of them being able to cast defense spells.

There. He was done. Now he could sit back and be depressed... and watch the elves.

Picking up her wand, Lux stared attentively at her pumpkin trying to work out where best to start carving for her constellation to look perfect. After a few minutes she nodded, ready to start.

"Punktumus," she said while holding her wand at the spot she wanted to begin carving. Slowly she cut out the first stick figure while making sure that the stars were in the right positions. It would not be good if she made a fail of this during an Astronomy class. As she carved, she tried to remember what each star was called, but failed miserably. Did they all even HAVE names?

Finished the first figure, Lux began working on the second while making sure to have their hands connected. It was so cute and she was rather pleased with her pumpkin when she was finished.

Oh. Professor Flamsteed had been WATCHING? Norah pushed a curl from her eyes and looked up at him, smiling the most innocent smile she possible could. Dimples and everything, yep. "I seem to have lost my pumpkin, professor..." She waved a hand at her desk, which had nothing put her note taking materials and wand laying on it. Toootally innocent, okay. Maybe he just...hadn't seen her put Friedrich down there. "May I have another one to practice the spell?" The third year gave him another angelic smile and rocked back and forth a little on her toes. Norah never ever lied, but this was a LIFE or DEATH situation, okay? Maybe the other pumpkin she would get would be a mean bully type of pumpkin, or one of those pumpkins that borrowed books from the library and never gave them back. She wouldn't have as much trouble cutting one of those ones up, EVEN if she still felt a little bad about it.
.........................what?

Wasn't it against some sort of magical law for Hufflepuffs to LOSE things? The professor simply stood in front of the girl's desk starring at her.

"Tell me, Miss Kittredge, how it is that you manage to lose a pumpkin without leaving your desk?" he asked, his eyes narrowing at the Hufflepuff. If nothing else, maybe he could get a good story out of the girl before he told her to check around her desk.

SPOILER!!: TiaMarie >:D we're only a tiny bit sorry

The fourth year wasn't laughing at Flamsteed's correction of the word Uranus. She really wasn't. But it WAS rather amusing seeing the Gryffindor Prefect flushed with embarrassment.

Moving on though. They were carving pumpkins? Intriguing, for sure. Definitely better than using a telescope. She wasn't opposed to scooping out the pumpkin guts like some of her classmates seemed to be although she was maybe slightly nervous on using her wand as a knife... but surely Flamsteed wouldn't have them complete the task if it would ruin their wand's magical properties?

Glancing around, she decided she should get started, murmuring 'punktumus' a few times under her breath to get the pronunciation down, before delicately holding her wand at the top of her pumpkin. "Pumpkintus" she muttered which oddly enough, nothing happened. "Pumpkintus. Pumpkintus."

Still nothing.

The professor's ears twitched as he heard what was unmistakably laughter. Laughter at the expense of a planet that couldn't help it had been named something rather unfortunate. He, personally, had been a fan of the planet King George option....

POINTING DRAMATICALLY at the Ravenclaw, eyes narrowed, he stomped his way over to her desk. "50 points from Ravenclaw, unless you apologize for trying to make a mockery out of a celestial body." Still dramatically pointing at you, young lady. RIGHT between the eyes.

The fact Zander had already gotten his spellwork right didn't help either. The Slytherin side-eyed his cut pumpkin and kept frowning at her own. Stupid thing. Stupid spell.

Then he did it. He offered help. "Yes, do it for me." She didn't think twice and immediately got her wand away from the pumpkin in front of her and gave enough space for Zander to work on it. Go, Zander. Do it now. Quick before they have the chance to be told off.

...Although there was no reason to be told off because he was simply helping her by casting the spell for her. Simply helping.

And those elves again? At least now they had a proper task and weren't there out of stupidity lik ethey had done at their table during the Feast.

But then he quickly caught himself doing so and changed his expression into something less... surprised? "Oh-uh sure, give me a second," and with that he turned back to his own pumpkin to finish cutting off the top.

Then, when he was done with that, he reached over to her pumpkin, noting the extra space she made for him. Hm. This was so weird. How come Agatha accepted the help? Hm. And you know, that kind of distracted from the fact that she was basically asking him to do all the work for her. Yeah, he actually didn't even realize that because so much focus on being the hero, you know? Plus the girl must've had a rough day or something. AND maybe this would put him in the good books and get her to stop the staring thing.

Pointing his wand at her pumpkin, and carefully jabbing it a little as he did so, "Punktumus!" he called out looking to her with a big smile on his face. See, he was doing it on the first go. Was she impressed? 'Cause he was impressed with himself. Mhm. Anyways, right. Cutting away at the top of the pumpkin. It wasn't even all that hard, how come Agatha was struggling with it? Surely she was a bright witch. Hm.

AND TADAAAA! The top of the pumpkin was all detached-- very nicely might he add. Actually, hers even turned out nicer than his own. Awh. But whatever, he was a hero. "Okay so now we've just got to empty out the insides?" She didn't need help with that too, did she? All they had to do was use their hands and pick out the guts. Not that bad. Not too hard. Yup. And that's what he was going to do now. Sticking his right hand in his own pumpkin he-- ew. It was mushy.

Initially, Airey was pleased to see Mr. Adair helping out a classmate. Pleased as a ripe Georgia peach - something his mother had sometimes said - and was about to praise the Gryffindor for it....when he saw that what the boy was not doing was 'helping' so much as 'doing'.

Only he took notice of this far too late to be able to stop it from happening entirely, but that did not mean his grumbly expression was any more pleasant looking.

"Mr. Adair, Miss Hapgood," he said, clearing his throat NOT so casually. "Mr. Adair, as noble as your intentions may be, seeing as Miss Hapgood is presently in posses of both her hands and all their fingers, you will allow her to do her own work from now on. Miss Hapgood, you will not continue to take advantage of Mr. Adair's generous nature...and come see me after class in my office." He paused for a moment, eyeing the two of them. "And I suggest you both look up the term "help" in the dictionary."

"Professor Airey," he said, before the man wandered away to go pounce onto someone's desk or something. "Could I get another pumpkin? Please? Maybe? Because, I just, um... well... I mean..." Toby lowered his hand and subconsciously placed it protectively on top of the pumpkin before speaking in a more measured sort of way, as though he was totally trying to be logical about this whole thing. Which he was. "Does it hurt them?" The pumpkins, that was. Super serious question here, and a super serious sombre expression to match. He trusted Airey to tell him the truth, but Toby didn't think that cutting the pumpkins open and pulling out their guts was going to leave them feeling very healthy. BUT if Professor Airey said they'd be fine, Toby wouldn't need a new pumpkin at all. Though now he was just in a weird headspace altogether.

... Which he seemed to suddenly realise, because at that moment Toby suddenly beamed at the professor, in that well practiced cheerful manner of his.

He was trying not to laugh at the Hufflepuff, really. Although his smile did indicate a bit of amusement at what the boy was saying. What was it with students becoming attached to inanimate objects in his lessons? Pebbles is a TOTALLY different story. TOTALLY!

But, so as to not make the same mistake twice - thank you Miss Cambridge, wherever you are right now - he put on a concerned face and pat Mr. Tempus' pumpkin. "It is your pumpkin's duty, Mr. Tempus," he nodded. "It was grown ready for this moment. And no, it will not feel a thing." None of that, by the way, was a lie. It was all the truth...just worded in a slightly illogical manner so as to avoid any potential tears because Merlin help him, and he supposed Mr. Tempus too, if those happened.

Evie was frozen and staring with wide eyes, so perhaps he could tell it was her. She was getting the idea that perhaps he was a germaphobe. The lint roller by the door and now this? Hm.

"Sorry," she mumbled. It was kinda funny, but she was sorry. Kind of.
RAVENCLAWS!

Only there had been no real harm done and his suit was safe...so...

"You're off the hook, this time," he muttered, spinning around to check out the rest of his suit to make sure it was safe. "Just be careful where you go flinging that stuff." He looked at the blackboard. "And I would appreciate it if you would clean that up." He waved dismissively at the board with the orange goop on it.

Did she really have to stick her hand in the pumpkin to get all of the goop out? Penelope really didn't want to do that. Not only was it disgusting, but she was getting a headache. Her headache was only getting worse. The smell go the pumpkin goo seemed to be making it worse. There was no way that she was going to be able to concentrate on her class work with a terrible headache. Penelope did not reach into the pumpkin to scoop out goo, but sat there with her elbows on the desk and her forehead resting on her palms. Was this lesson going to be over soon? This headache wasn't getting any better.
"Everything, er, alright, Miss Wright?" he asked almost reluctantly. No tears, yes? None of that. Was she attached to her pumpkin too?

Yep. All good ... all fine, never mind that he was going to FAIL the subject this year. At least he was capable of scooping out pumpkin guts.
...
His blue eyes darted back and forth between the Gryffindor and the Sltytherin. "Well, if you're sure then..." he said, slowly side stepped away from the pair to allow them to continue their work.

"Are you telling me that you carry around rat feces in your school bag?" he asked, nose wrinkled in pure disgust as the sheer thought of doing such a thing. Sweet solstice, students these days. Why couldn't they all see the joy in keeping a pet rock?!

He turned his attention towards the board and then back to the Slytherin. "Do you need reading glasses, Miss Jones?" he asked, genuinely concerned. The board clearly had constellations and planets listed and labeled as separate categories and if she was having a hard time reading as such from her desk then the girl's Head of House should be informed.

But back to this...rat situation. "Turn out your pockets, Miss Jones," he said, eyeing them suspiciously.

Default Post 3 Margo just makes things up!
Mommy of 3 <3 <3 <3

Oh that's right!!! The last thing that they were suppose to write a little something about their constellation that they had picked. Grabbing her text book Margo looked up the Pegasus to see what it all had to say. She hoped she was getting this right.......she might have to add a little bit of guessing into this. She wasn't always that great with the 'homework' aspects of the school work. She was much better at the practical side of magic.

Finally finding the Pegasus in the text boo Margo read and then came up with some stuff on her own.

SPOILER!!: notes
The Pegasus, named after a winged horse in Greek Mythology, is a constellation in the northern sky. There are four stars of nearly equal brightness make up the Great Square of Pegasus: Scheat, Alpheratz, Markab and Algenib. The constellation Pegasus has been recognized as a constellation for 2,000 years. It is said to help with 'wind' elements due to the fact that the Pegasus can fly. It gives great strength to defensive spells, however, does not help at all non verbal spells
